GIMAV

Renata Gaffo, Director of Gimav

R enata Gaffo, director of Gimav, firmly believes in the importance of the Düsseldorf event. “In these sluggish times, it is a useful tool toward under-

standing what margin of development Italy’s glass processing machinery industry can secure for itself. The starting positions for our businesses are, of course, quite good, because in this sector the prestige of Italian prod-ucts is beyond question. The financial slump has infected the entire planet and despite a positive start , 2012 ap-pears to be heading toward a much more dramatic con-clusion than predicted. However, the huge potential of glass along with glass companies’ commitment to inno-vation point to a brighter future”. “Our companies - Gi-mav’s director adds - are facing the difficulties of ‘flying blind’ with unwavering determination. This situation, however, still leaves considerable room for creativity and enterprising spirit, as Italian businesses can rely on the same capability and proactive attitude used to diversify their horizon and reach out to new markets, thus maxi-mizing outlets for their products”. This is the spirit that enlivens the participation of Gimav and its member com-panies at Glasstec with a massive turnout occupying an exhibit area of approximately 15,000 square meters de-voted to “made in Italy”. This unique event will provide a unique opportunity to illustrate the new features of the 18th Vitrum show (October 23-26), a trade show that once again promises to be a decisive influence in the in-dustry’s development over the next five years. The 2013 edition of the international biennial trade fair for machin-ery, equipment and systems for the processing of flat and hollow glass, glass and finished products for the industry

will bind two aspects of Italian creativity and expertise -- the super-technological art of glass processing and the warm, inviting art of enjoying life, a foretaste of which will be offered at the Gimav stand in Glasstec. ■

For some time, ADI SpA has focused its energies on researching how to optimize its customers’ techni-cal and economic resources. The company’s key

aim is to reduce the customer’s overall operating costs and improve the esthetic quality of the products it proc-esses. These objectives can, in fact, be achieved through an increase in processing speed, with a resulting leap in productivity, reduction of machine stop time, reduction of work stops for maintenance and/or reconditioning, re-duction of processing cycles, and improvement in the quality of the product’s finish. To accomplish these goals, the company developed a dedicated line called UHS®. This new line, along with the various transformation tech-nologies of super abrasive products -- such as resinoid wheels (medium-high and ultra-high temperatures), vari-ous metal bond types (furnace, hot pressing, etc.), vitri-fied and coated – put ADI SpA in a unique market posi-tion, in terms of what they can offer the end customer. The philosophy of slashing overall operating costs falls on fertile ground in Germany, where the cost of labor and the ongoing quest for improvement are a perfect match.

Another crucial element in obtaining impressive results in the reduction of overall operating costs is teamwork. In-terfacing with the technical staff of the companies that use ADI products, and with technicians spread out over the country is key. In the German market, ADI SpA relies on collaborative partnering with the technicians of the DTS company in Mönchengladbach. And finally, in order to provide a complete service to its customers, ADI SpA launched a series of activities called Fab-Labs, designed to supplement its product range, and technical support for the more complex (CNC) machines. Included in this line are the suction cup program, technical support for optimization of machine use, reprofiling/repair of tools, and a series of small accessories that ensure proper use of the machines. ■

THE TIPPER WITH EXTRACTING DEVICE

AUTOMA RBT-SFThe tipper AUTOMA RBT-SF with extracting device is a patented system. The system is composed of a base frame positioned orthogonally to the storage system for the glass sheets. In the longitudinal sense of the base frame the carriage runs carrying the overturned group rotating laterally in both ways.On the overturned group there are arms equipped with suction cups for the pick up of the sheets and for the transfer of them DIRECT ON THE CUTTING TABLE.

In particular RBT-SF is fit to:• Lay DIRECTLY ON THE CUTTING TABLE the glass sheet taken from the storage system.• Operate in buildings with reduced height.

• Pick up the sheets (with its extended arm) from storage system in columns standing between the storage system and RBT-SF.• Pick up sheets from storage system on elevated floors. • Pick up sheets from opposed storage systems.• Pick up and lay the sheets “in line“ on a machine which will operate other work process on them

RBT-SF also pick up sheets with low magnetic emission coating.

The Combined Loader is made up of:• Steel double-T sliding guides group, equipped with racks and complete with floor mounting system or aerial fixing.• Pick-up unit with a steel structure, which moves on the sliding guides (aerial or fixed on the floor) by means of motorized groups. A sturdy steel structure translates inside the pick-up unit, by means of motors; this structure holds the rotating tower which can vertically move. The double system – tilting and rotating to 180 degrees – is fixed on the tower and it: - Holds the suction-cupsHolds the suction-cups and is designed for different sizes of glass sheets (automatic suction-cups selection); - Holds the packsHolds the packs and is designed to pick up packs of different weight (automatic selection) from the A-frame unloaded by the truck, in order to transfer the packs inside the Orthogonal Traverse Storage system or inside traditional storage systems.

The Combined Loader is completely independent, thanks to the following groups:• Oil hydraulic group, • Pneumatic group • Vacuum group. The Loader is supplied with:• Integrated software to manage the glass quantity;• Software to put back cuttings in the storage system;• Software to remove the covering sheet of Low-E glass or to move normal sheets from one specific storage system to another one;• Integrated Ethernet Modem.• Fixed or mobile tip-over unit (optional) with variable inclination, made up of a strong tilting table equipped with roller-table, to unload and transfer the glass sheet (also low-E glass) to the cutting table, by means of a suitable motor.

Antonio Piazza created his first glass storage sys-tem in 1990, and since then his continuous strive for excellence has led his business to grow into

the Piazza Group, which also includes the Apb Antonio Piazza Brevetti company. This name embraces much of the Group’s philosophy: continuous research for the de-velopment of new ideas to ensure the sector’s growth. Patented ideas (brevetti) for systems constantly meeting at least three essential requirements: safety of personnel using the systems, efficient use of warehouse space, minimized handling times. At the Düsseldorf fair, Apb will showcase a patented machine “in which we have invest-ed our future,” stresses Piazza, since “it lifts single glass sheets as well as packs of sheets with varying weight.” The SS 6000 BE Pack is a combined loader for handling mm3210x6000 low-emissivity glass sheets (optional 3210x7000). Its load capacity is 1300 kg for single glass sheets, but it can handle as much as 6000 kg for glass packs (3210x6000) with automatic weight distribution. The loader is composed of a group of slide guides and a pick-up group with rotating and vertically movable col-umn, which supports a double inclined and 180° rotating system with suction cups designed for various glass shapes. Furthermore, it picks up glass packs of varying weight from the rack delivered by the truck and transfers them inside the warehouse. This fully independent loader is supplied with its own hydraulic, pneumatic and vacu-um systems as well as remote diagnostics module. There

will also be another Apb patented system at Glasstec, the “Automa Rbt-Sf” extension tipper. This system is dis-tinguished for its innovative structure in which the tipping group supports arms complete with suction cups for picking up glass sheets from the warehouse and transfer-ring them directly onto the cutting table. The Rbt-Sf also picks up sputtered low-E sheets. ■

S tudies, technical development and quality for prod-ucts by Belfortglass, a company that will be at Glasstec (Pavilion 16, stand F16) with its range of

next generation metal-and resin-bond cup wheels for CNC straightline grinding and edging machines. Also on display, the traditional butyl extruders and extruders for one/two component sealants for use on insulating glass, distributed and known worldwide because of their reliabil-ity, duration and easy use. A recent development is the new version of the H505/B hydraulic extruder for polysul-phide which remains sturdy and reliable, but with an im-proved safety system and operating pressure, and with a control panel that is easier to access and speeds up pres-sure adjustment operations. For its diamond tools, the company has focused its attention and resources on rough grinding wheels, offering effective solutions for cus-tomer needs, which have been achieved because of test-ing and applications over the years. The essential feature of these wheels is their long-lasting edge, combining a longer working life with less need for dressing. “Glasstec

is an important moment, an international appointment where you can check how your performance stacks up against competitors, especially at this time when the mar-ket is changing constantly and is extremely competitive” explained Mauro Bovone, the company’s sales manager. “As a result we as producers are also involved in this de-velopment process and adapt to new customer needs. Standard products no longer exist because everything to-day needs to be tailor-made in order to enter a market that is becoming ever more specialized. This is where Bel-fortglass has been headed over the last couple of years: investing in research and machinery, and working on new products and sectors, such as the optical industry”. ■

F our new machine models and plenty of product inno-vation will be on display at the Bottero stand at Glasstec this year. Two of them are for monolithic glass

cutting: the newer version of the world's most widely-sold stand-alone cutting table and a new cutting and processing platform concept for integrated lines. These two innovations will make the day for clients who demand high performance from stand alone tables and for those companies that re-quire automation and production management, a new logic for those who are not willing to settle for "just" a cutting ta-ble. By partnering with Attilio Busetti, Bottero's portfolio of horizontal grinding machines has added a new range. These new machines will be capable of carrying out the most com-

plex and sensitive processes with the utmost flexibility and quality. “The modularity of the new grinding lines - according to a company source - will make it possible for our custom-ers to carry out the most diverse glass edge processing tasks on the same machine, even on laminated glass, up to 38 mm thick”. For large-scale mass production jobs, visitors at Glasstec will find the new opposite drilling heads at the Bottero stand, with performance guaranteed to set new manufacturing target levels for the sector. In addition to the latest inventions, the large stand will also host two laminated glass cutting lines for up to 12 + 12, a serious demonstration of the sturdiness that has always been a hallmark of the en-tire range of Bottero products. ■

there’s no stopping the steady trek toward improve-ment of its range of tools for work centers by Bovo-ne Diamond Tools Srl. This year the company is

heading to Düsseldorf with the innovative Goldnet router -- with enhanced performance, thanks to a new design with rounded sectors. Available in various diameters, st-arting at 10 mm, Goldnet entirely eliminates the problem of glass chipping, which occurs more often with the use of conventional routers with longitudinal segments. “The company is involved in a process of product improve-ment, made possible with the aid of cutting-edge equip-ment, which guarantees the reproducibility of the shape of the wheel and reduces processing time considerably, with obvious advantages in terms of delivery”, explains Patrizia Pastorino, sales manager for Bovone Diamond Tools. And the company’s presence at Glasstec is strate-gically important, because “the show continues to be the most representative of the glass industry and for BDT it is an extremely important event, considering the influx of customers and industry professionals. Showing up at your best is crucial, and it’s good for business, now more than ever”. Among European countries, continues Pasto-rino, “Germany is the one that has been the most respon-sive to the innovations added to our line, so the growth

we are experiencing makes us optimistic about the future. BDT’s presence in Germany dates back to the ‘80s -- plenty of time to establish our reputation for quality -- and this also spurs us to continue to improve. To maintain one’s position or, as in our case, to increase sales despite the difficult times, it’s essential to continue to grow in terms of quality and product range, avoiding the mistake of trying to save by cutting corners on the use of materials in order to gain a more competitive pricing edge”. And to not contradict itself, the Ovada-based company has also revisited its traditional range of cup wheels, adding metal-resin to the myriad metal and resin bonding agents, that allow the wheels to adapt to all types of processing. In addition to longer wheel life, metalresin is a material that also guarantees an excellent finish. ■

CUStOMIZED lINESdesiGned to meet customer needs Technological and electronic innovations for CMB machines

by C. Z.

CMB Costruzioni Meccanica Besana Spa will bring a series of its machines to Glasstec 2012 to show off the technological and electronic innovations made to

its line of products. Operationally, these improvements mean a higher degree of processing accuracy, as well as a reduction in programming times and a considerable in-crease in output. The appointment with Germany’s trade show is always circled in red on the Varese-based compa-ny’s calendar. It has participated in Glasstec “since it first opened its doors, to spotlight the company’s strength -- be-ing able to offer ‘custom-built’ plants, in terms of size and operating functions – in that sense, all the lines are custom-ized to meet the special needs of each customer”, points out Domenico Stanco, CEO of CMB. “This trade show has long been considered one of the leading industry showcas-es, a fundamental stop on a company’s itinerary, because it’s where the latest and most cutting-edge technologies are introduced. Despite the growing number of trade fairs or-

ganized around the globe, Glasstec continues to draw large crowds and to attract most of the European and interna-tional manufacturers so, for us, it’s crucial to be a part of it, and to take advantage of this opportunity to take the pulse of the markets”, explains Stanco. CMB Costruzioni Mec-canica Besana will display its new double-edge grinding machine for high-polish flat edge, and a new series of NC drills, in both the Compact vertical version with two pairs of heads, and in the horizontal version with 5 pairs of heads for drilling and a special head for milling and grinding out notches. The series of drills will appear alongside the new, competitively priced, extremely versatile semiautomatic machine. Also on display will be the straight-line edger for regular and laminated glass, for flat edge with polished edg-es or mitered at any angle up to 50°, on glass sheets up to 22 mm thick. This machine also comes in versions with 11, 13 and 15 wheels for processing massive thicknesses, up to 65 mm, and with miter angle adjustable up to 60°. ■

I.G. SEALANTS

IT’S DEFINITELY BETTER NOT TO SAVE ON CERTAIN THINGS.

IF A SEALANT COSTS MUCH LESS THAN THIOVER, ASK YOURSELF WHY.

When talking about polysulphide sealants for IG, the formulation and selection of the raw materials used are fundamental for the long-term performance of the entire system. This is mainly why you can always rely on Thiover, on its exceptional quality and performance features. Throughout Fenzi’s 70 years in business, non-stop R&D efforts have led to the most efficient production processes and leading-edge product technology. The raw materials that are used and the sources of supply have always been chosen with extremely strict and binding criteria. Furthermore Fenzi, by far the world’s biggest producer of polysulphide sealants, works with the largest economies of scale, starting from the raw materials. Examine the cost/performance ratio

very carefully: if a polysulphide sealant costs much less than Thiover, it can’t be the same thing.

Wireless connectivity

Central Europe, and most notably Germany, have al-ways been a strategic market for Glaston from the very start, as substantiated by the more than 2,000

machines developed and sold in this area. Glasstec will once again provide an invaluable opportunity to strengthen the presence of Glaston in Europe. Its comprehensive line of vertical edgers and double edgers, bevellers, perforating machines, workstations, and cutting tables is complement-ed by the new double edgers for pencil edge processing for solar energy applications and the white goods and furniture industry. The distinguishing features of this new line are reli-ability, innovation, quality and high throughput. The philoso-phy behind the development of Glaston’s pencil edge dou-ble edgers revolves once again around the needs of modern glassworks, i.e. premium quality of the finished product and fast payback. The lines have been developed for high pro-ductivity by reducing downtimes caused by tool changeover and maintenance, whereas their high speed ensures processing of a large number of pieces daily. The new Hiyon series of straight-line edgers presented last year is today a best-seller all over the world. Its innovative features -- grind&stop functioning, energy savings, wireless connectiv-ity, built-in electrical cabinet, glass thickness kit, modern touch screen controls, and built-in HiWash washer have been favorably received by clients. Last but not least, the Xtraedge family of double edgers with cup wheels by Glas-ton affords customers with “Xtra” productivity and quality in

flat edge glass processing with arrises and corner cutting and has proved to be extremely popular with clients be-cause of its heavy duty structure, the new balanced spin-dles, the double driven conveyor, the patented automated intermediate bar, and the new compact electrical cabinet with touch screen control. ■

NEW VERtMAxaffords reliability and accuracy Global preview of the new vertical machine from Intermac at Glasstec

by C. Z.

W ith its leadership already well-established in the technological sector for NC work centers, Inter-mac expands its product range with a new verti-

cal machine, to be unveiled at Glasstec. The Vertmax is designed to appeal to those companies in need of a flex-ible, productive, limited-footprint machine capable of easily processing both small and large-sized pieces. In addition to this newsmaker, the Genius Comby J-A46 will also be on view in the company’s 700 sq m stand. This laminated glass cutting line offers performance and qual-ity while targeting the needs of a medium-high market segment. An added advantage is a 20% reduction in foot-print (compared to other products already available on the market), thanks to the patented vertical storage device. Count on demos of the Primus 322, the waterjet cutting machine with a 3210x2200 mm work surface, equipped with 2 5-axis heads (and the absolutely unique Intermac patented infinite rotating C axis), that allow for mitered cuts, mitered corners and, if needed, the machine can process two identical pieces at the same time to accom-modate high output needs. It’s worth noting that, in cases where edge finishing is not required, waterjet technology makes it possible to achieve cut quality suitable for feed-ing to the tempering furnace without further edge process-ing. Representing its range of work centers, the Master 35 -- maximum expression of state of the art technology -- will be on display at the Intermac stand. With the hi-tech 5 axis head, it’s a machine that is already in use by hundreds of glass professionals around the world, thanks to its reliability, accuracy and quality finishes. “Although we’re in a period of rapid change, where the focal points

of the market are no longer what they were five years ago, Glasstec still maintains its broad international appeal, at-tracting professionals from all the corners of the globe. It is the perfect showcase in which to present one’s latest innovations and stimulate market interest”, according to Franco Angelotti, general sales manager for Intermac, as he confirms the company’s decision to present its new product at the German trade fair. “Glasstec is still the place to start if you want to launch a new product on the red carpet”. ■

A must-see innovation on display at Glasstec 2012 is the FlyOver by Lisec, a leading-edge system for remnant plate handling. It will be showcased along

with new technologies in glass sorting and cutting, insu-lating glass production and sealing, laminated glass pro-duction and flat glass processing, which will occupy the 2600 sq meters of stand space organized by the company (pavilion 17, stand A24). The new FlyOver, an intelligent bridge equipped with a single row of suction cups, can move diagonally above the glass storage area when no glass is being transported, and follow the shortest path to the next storage rack in a completely automated manner, ensuring short cycle times and cutting machines working at full capacity. “In addition to significant time savings, the FlyOver renders extra remnant plate handling systems obsolete by transporting remnants back to the glass stor-age area and using the storage racks as remnant plate

racks,” explains Stefan Hafenscher from Lisec Marketing. “Especially in times like these when companies are reluc-tant to invest, products that are in line with market needs and optimize costs are essential,” points out Hafenscher. “Since Glasstec is the leading flat glass trade fair, this is really the perfect venue for taking a closer look at the lat-est developments and exploring what future technologies will offer.” Furthermore, Lisec will showcase some high-tech solutions for laminated glass. Among these are a new washing machine, suitable for highly sensitive coat-ings, and an innovative pre-lamination system for in-creased accuracy in the lamination process. Also on dis-play will be insulating glass machines and easy-to-use solutions for flat glass processing offering superior manu-facturing quality, as well as an improved system that sig-nificantly enhances the sealing process, especially in the corners of insulating glass units. ■

today, Mappi International is Europe’s one and only major furnace manufacturers to develop and build its entire production in-house, with the benefit of

offering its partners high-quality technology that affords the ultimate in energy efficiency and technological per-formance – the distinguishing features of this company based in Latina, central Italy. Its participation in the sixth Glasstec show upholds the legacy of the participation of Italy in international expos, as a result of made-in-Italy widely acclaimed know-how and premium quality. At Glasstec, Mappi International expects to reach out to an international audience. The German exhibition, in fact, with 57% of attendance from international countries, is viewed as a must-see event by the world's glass industry. However, over the last few years, the type of attendance to Glasstec has changed, with the quality of visitors tak-ing priority over their quantity, much to the benefit of tech-nologically advanced companies such as Mappi for which a discerning and knowledgeable audience has tradition-ally resulted in good contacts and interesting sales pros-pects. As the company management points out, "the Ger-man market is paramount because of its extraordinary specialization and its very high quality standards. With re-spect to this, this market has always been ahead of world trends ”. The showstopper at Glasstec will be the high-performance tempering furnace ATS featuring the exclu-

sive GHBS convection system developed jointly with Glaverbel. The technology applied to this furnace ensures market-leading energy efficiency and the highest quality of the finished product. A t this year's Glasstec, RBM Italia will be showcasing its comprehensive line of flat glass polishing wheels,

from the rough grinding models up to ceri-um oxide polishing wheels for extra bright final polishing. The products of this com-pany based in northern Italy enjoy world-wide acclaim because of their well-known and consistent high-quality and advanced technological content. RBM Italia was the first company initially in Italy and later in the world to offer this product when the first Italian grinding and polishing machines were launched. Today, RBM manufactures wheels in a variety of sizes and materials that are installed on the machines devel-oped by leading manufacturers with which RBM cooperates to test and fine-tune its products.“As usual, says Paola Reynaud, RBM sales man-ager, Glasstec is an extraordinary opportunity to network with most of our international agents, and this is vital for our company that exports approximately 85% of its production. At this year's show, we expect to be able to gain an insight into the market performance and direction especially in the light of the fluctuating trend of our sales today. The German marketplace has traditionally been paramount for us, as it was our company's first market outlet in the 70s, has re-mained our preferential partner in Central Europe for the last 20 years and it continues to absorb most of our sales today.

All of Germany is covered by many agents who have been successfully working for us for many years”. And today? “2012 seems to have started off to a slow start, continues Ms. Reynaud, but in April we witnessed a surge in demand that bodes well for the rest of the year. There has been an increase in the sales of cerium oxide wheels after last year's drop due to a sudden price hike caused by Chinese suppli-ers of raw materials. Today, demand has climbed back to the same level as two years ago thanks to the launch of a new cerium oxide wheel, model X7000, an interesting mix of good quality and reasonable price”. ■

The BFP20 double edger

A t this year’s Glasstec, visitors will be able to gain a close-up view of the machines developed by Officina Meccanica Schiatti Angelo, the result of ongoing ef-

forts to fine tune products designed to perfectly meet the current requirements of the flat glass working industry as well as anticipate its still unexpressed needs. As Cinzia Schiatti, the company's sales manager puts it: “It is critical to exhibit at Glasstec, the major international event for the glass industry, and we need to make sure that visitors can eyewitness the quality of our products”. The latest innova-tions by Schiatti for the German show are built on the prod-ucts that were successfully launched before but that now offer a number of updated features enhancing their perform-ance. “There will be a new version of the TFV vertical drilling machine, designed to drill and mill 3 to 15 mm thick glass – Ms. Schiatti continues - whereas other innovations will en-hance flat edge double edgers. We will also display variable angle machines that are proving increasingly more popular in all markets". Now managed by its third generation, the company's success is fueled by its expertise and know-how that have resulted in more than 15,000 machines manufac-tured since its foundation. “We don't have a one-size-fits-all philosophy and in fact all of our products are fully custom-specified. From the standalone machine to complete lines, everything is customizable to meet the needs of both small-sized and large-sized businesses”. A large share of the com-pany's production is exported and one of the distinctive fea-tures of Schiatti’s machinery is its ease of use and low maintenance needs. “We have spared no efforts with this

concept, says Ms. Schiatti, the ultimate goal being reducing machine downtime to a minimum and allow operators to fix problems without necessarily having to call a technician. We firmly believe that our clients must be confident that our ma-chines will never leave them stranded, not even during de-manding work peaks”. ■

t wo new diamond cup wheels: one with resin binder and an innovative geometric shape and another one with metal binder with a new concept alloy and ex-

traordinary diamond. This is the result of the research and development efforts by Tyrolit on display at the company's stand at the international show in Düsseldorf. These highly innovative tools are not only easy to use but also capable of substantially increasing the quality of processing to the ben-efit of both machine builders and their users. “Installed on double edgers and straight-line edgers for the processing of flat edge on float and laminated glass, explains Franco Di Nardo with Tyrolit in Thiene (Vicenza, northern Italy) - they make it possible to operate on any thickness without chang-ing tools and with different product mixes”. The multiple tests conducted by Tyrolit jointly with some machine builders pro-vided excellent results: “ A 25% increase in infeed - contin-ues Di Nardo - and top-quality finishing on all thicknesses”. More specifically, the two innovative tools offering enhanced performance are the B94 cup wheel, the time-honored resin product by Tyrolit, that today features a new geometric shape that can find a variety of different applications, and the new HS metal tool which, thanks to a new alloy and premium quality diamond, affords top performance. “Our tests, says Di Nardo – showed that the combined use of the HS and B94 wheels made it possible to continue working with the same set of tools on float glass from 4 mm thickness up to 100 mm thick laminated glass ”.Thanks to these solutions, producers can fit their machines with a single set of tools that will allow the end-user to achieve consistently optimal results, regard-

less of the production mix. Tyrolit, based in Thiene, is part of a group with a history that dates back to the end of the 19th century, when Daniel Swarovski founded Wattens in the country of Tyrol, the first workshop for crystal processing. In 1917 the family started producing the first diamond tools and set up Tyrolit in 1919. ■
