Golf for BANC (Building A New Church)

St Peter’s Roman Catholic Church is pleased to invite all of you to participate in its 1st Annual Golf Tournament, on Saturday, June 6, 2015 at The Meadows Golf Course in East St Paul, Manitoba starting at 7am. This tournament welcomes our Christian community, local businesses, community partners, friends and relatives. The net proceeds of which will go towards the building fund to help finance the Phase 1 construction of a new church.

As a growing congregation, St. Peter’s Parish (located at 748 Keewatin St) find itself at a crossroads. Our parishioners have little space to worship or to celebrate together. The physical structure of our Church has simply not kept in pace with the growth of our parish community. We believe that it is now time to build a new Church where we

can continue to expand our faith community and bring our people together in one location. The new St. Peter’s will be able to provide ample space for worship as well as support facilities for social gatherings,

meeting rooms, educational, and recreational areas that are desperately needed. Phase1 construction will give us a new parish hall, space for children’s rooms, a library, boardroom, kitchen, gymnasium with a seating capacity of 600 people for banquets that will bring rental revenue.

Our plan to start the Phase 1 construction is in spring of 2016. But we still need to raise a fair amount of funds in order to proceed. This golf tournament is only one of the variety of fundraising activities planned to reach our goal. We are also asking for 5-year pledge from our community members and families.

There will always be one St. Peter, but a new structure for St Peter’s Parish will permit us to forward and spread the Gospel, teach His truth and continue to do His saving work in and through the Church. PLEASE HELP US BUILD OUR CHURCH!

PNoy State visit to CanadaPhilippine President, Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III concluded his three-day state visit to Canada which included stops in Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver. The highly productive visit to Canada was President Aquino’s first to Canada and the first by a Filipino president since 1997. Prime Minister Harper and President Aquinio welcomed a number of key initiatives that will deepen the strong Canada-Philippines bilateral relationship.

In the area of commerce, the two countries launched exploratory discussions towards a free trade agreement and agreed to work towards upgrading the existing Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement.‎ Canada sees increased engagement with the Asia-Pacific region, and with

the Philippines, as a priority for Canada’s economic growth.

The leaders also welcomed the signing of an important framework on mutual accountability for development cooperation that outlines the commitments of both governments to work together toward reducing poverty in the Philippines. As well, a number of projects were announced that will continue to help the Philippines recover from Typhoon Haiyan (locally known as Yolanda).

In addition, the leaders held in-depth discussions on regional and global security challenges. The Prime Minister announced Canadian support to a number of initiatives aimed at improving maritime security, countering terrorism in the Asia-Pacific region, and supporting the

President’s Bangsamoro Peace Process.

The two leaders also participated in a cultural event where they met with members of Canada’s vibrant Filipino community. At this event, Prime Minister Harper paid tribute to the tremendous contributions this community continues to make to Canada, and the importance of the strong people-to-people ties to the Canada-Philippines bilateral partnership.

President Benigno S. Aquino III arrived in Ottawa to begin his meeting with the Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper; and on the second day at Toronto, both leaders met the Filipino community at Roy Thompson Hall; and then flew to Vancouver, his last leg of his first trip, as an invited guest of the Prime Minister of Canada.

And when President Aquino arrived home from his five-day trip to the United States and in Canada where he received many pledges of more investments, various initiative to help cement more trades and labor relations with the Canadian government.

Many positive results were mentioned by Aquino when he met many Canadian businesses and had issued so much interest to expand the waste recycling and energy

conversion, and to help promote tourism and agriculture. He added that there will be possibility of harnessing the Philippine tropical climate for growing cranberries and blueberries.

In Ottawa, President Aquino was welcomed by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, our kababayan Senator Tobias Enverga. Jr, and

other members of his cabinet. He met also Justin Trudeau, the Liberal Leader. In Toronto, an open invitation extended by the Canadian Prime Minister to the various leaders from Ontario, Quebec and Manitoba. A well-attended informal gathering at Roy Thompson Hall where both Harper and Aquino

greeted the Filipino Canadians as they waved the Canadian and the Filipino Flag.

"We're so happy to see President Aquino to address the Filipino leaders in our native language, and I like what he has told us about my home country, and I think he has done many good things

to help our kababayans back home, " said by one of the seniors who joined the gathering.

In Vancouver, President Aquino met with British Columbia Premier Christy Clark who has pledged to facilitate the employment of the Filipinos in this province.

Super Visa hits milestone and helps families reunite faster

Over 50,000 of the popular Parent and Grandparent Super Visas have been issued since its December 2011 launch, as part of Phase I of the Action Plan for Faster Family Reunification.

This multiple-entry visa is valid for up to 10 years and provides parents and grandparents with the flexibility

of being able to visit family in Canada for up to two years without needing to renew their status.

Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander announced this milestone at the Surrey-Delta Indo Canadian Seniors Centre, in Surrey, B.C., noting that the

50,000th Super Visa had recently been issued.

Parents and grandparents wanting to visit their families in Canada for a longer period of time continue to take advantage of the Parent and Grandparent Super Visa. Approval rates have remained consistently high since the launch of the Super Visa.

Justin Trudeau and Liberal MPs meet with Aquino

The Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, and Liberal MPs John McKay and Kevin Lamoureux meet with the President of the Philippines, Benigno Aquino III, in Toronto

President Aquino met with Liberal Party leader, Justin Trudeau during his visit in Ottawa. Justin Trudeau on his meeting with the President of the Philippines. More than 700,000 Canadians tracing their heritage

to the Philippines, our countries share strong and enduring cultural links. I have been fortunate to attend many events with Filipino-Canadians, and I always admire their warmth, their ingenuity, and their strong family bonds.

We are extremely proud that Filipinos have chosen to come to Canada, share their culture and traditions, and embrace the uniquely Canadian view of liberty through inclusive diversity. Canada is stronger not in spite of its differences, but precisely because of them.“I look forward to continued deepening ties with the Filipino-Canadian community, and between our two countries.”

On May 8 I stated the following in the House of Commons: Mr. Speaker, for so many reasons, it is great to see President Aquino from the Philippines in Canada, building what will be no doubt a very positive relationship in the years ahead.

Last night I had the pleasure of attending the state dinner for President Aquino and what a privilege it was to be sitting with a YouTube sensation Maria Aragon. She is a talented young lady with

an amazing voice. Maria was famously discovered by Lady Gaga. Her video has views in excess of 55 million people. She sang in front of Princess Kate and Prince William. In 2011, she was the most searched term in Canada.

Maria will be releasing a single and an album in the next few months. Hailing from Winnipeg, I would like to extend a warm welcome to Maria who is in Ottawa today.

Oh great, more platesA pinay’s guide to getting hitchedWeddings aren’t one-day events.

Asides from all the planning that goes into picking your ideal dress, bouquet and cake topper, you must also consider everything else that leads up to it. That includes, but may not be limited to, an engagement party, social, shower, and bachelor(ette) party.

Many of these engagements, including the wedding, involve setting up a gift registry. Your friends and family will be anxious to start searching for gift ideas, and unless you want two dozen sets of plates, cutlery and wine glasses, it’s key to get your lists up early.

What else must a couple consider when building their gift registries? The opinions are plentiful, and here are a few pieces of advice:

1.Cash is king Newlyweds take on many

major financial commitments, including their honeymoons, mortgages and the wedding itself. Times have changed, and cash registries (or what some refer to as a presentation gift) that were once taboo are now on the upward trend. There is no shame in helping fund a couple’s future in the most practical sense.2.Big box stores aren’t your only option

Big box stores like Home Outfitters and Bed Bath & Beyond are well-equipped to handle most of your wedding registry needs. But before you finalize your lists, consider checking out a few smaller specialty boutiques that stock more unique and personalized finds. The best bet

is to diversify and include large and small stores for your guests to shop at.3.Offer options for everyone

You’re inviting family and friends based on your relationships with them, and not because of the bills stacked in their bank accounts. As a courtesy to your guests, make sure your registry includes options for every budget. Items can range from oven mitts to a new patio set.

4. Think out of the boxYour wedding registry, in

some ways, tells a story about what kind of couple you and your loved one are – down to the very prints and patterns you choose. If you’re feeling adventurous, there is no harm in taking the non-traditional approach. Alongside the practical necessities, think about adding some character-specific items that match your personalities and interests, which might include camping equipment, travel essentials or an espresso machine.

Marunong Ka bang Tumanggap ng Pagkatalo?

by aLfie vera mella [email protected]

On Sportsmanship, Sense of Fairness, and Objectivity

One day, my son asked me, “Dad, is it true that in a game everybody’s a winner?”

After careful analysis, I responded, “No, it’s not true.”

In any sport, game, or competition, there will always be winners and losers in the end (unless the result is a tie, a draw, or a truce; in fact, there’s even usually a tiebreaker just to be able to declare a rightful winner). And there’s nothing wrong with that. There should be nothing shameful about losing. And there should be nothing self-aggrandizing

about winning either. In a game or competition, in which results are calculated based on clear, fair, and transparent points of criteria and in consideration of the objective and subjective decision of the judges, winners should be able to celebrate their success in ecstatic yet humble manner and losers should be able to regard the loss as an opportunity to improve and to upgrade their skills and strategy. Although winning or losing means a lot to a person, she should not take this too seriously to the point of treating the competition

as a win-or-die situation. Simply put, it’s just a game; nothing personal; if you win, then great—congratulations; if you lose, move on and better luck next time.

At walang masama o kahiya-hiya riyan.

The Future Kings

The pay-per-view numbers are in and the fight between Floyd Mayweather and

Manny Pacquiao broke the previous record by a landslide. Billed as the “Fight of the Century”, the two fighters pulled in 4.4 Million PPV buys and over $400 Million in revenue beating the previous record set by De la Hoya -Mayweather of 2.4 Million. While Mayweather spends his purse in extravagant fashion, the PPV king will have to decide his future in boxing with possibly one or two fights left in his thus far perfect career. Fresh from rotator cuff surgery on his right shoulder, Pacquiao will begin a 9-12 month healing process with an anticipated run for Senate in the Philippines in 2016. The sport of boxing will need new faces to carry the sport and it didn’t take long for the audition process to start.

One week after Mayweather won a decision over Pacquiao in a lacklustre affair, Light middleweight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez brought the action in a match against James Kirkland. Alvarez, a former opponent of

Mayweather, knocked Kirkland down three times including a spectacular knockout in the third round to improve to 45-1-1 with 32 KOs. Alvarez has already proven to be a huge draw as the fight with Mayweather reached 2.2 PPV buys. With a Mexican fan base that follows him across the continent, Alvarez may be the next big attraction.

The following week, Gennady “GGG” Golovkin threw his name into the mix. The Kazakh boxer continued his impressive knockout streak to 20 by stopping Willie

Monroe Jr. in the sixth round to improve to 33-0 with 30 KOs. The middleweight has become a fan favorite promising fans a “big drama show” each time he steps into the ring and has been vocal at taking on stiffer challenges such as Saul Alvarez, Miguel Cotto, and even Floyd Mayweather.

The showcasing continues for British fighters Amir Khan and Kell Brook that want to make a name for themselves in North America. Both fighters will be in action in the next month against separate opponents and if fans get their wish, a battle between the two could determine who takes the next big step. Undefeated American and Fighter of the Year, Terrence Crawford waits in the wings and searches for his next opponent with Manny Pacquiao rumoured to be that person once he returns from injury. Nicaraguan Flyweight Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez boasts an impressive 43-0 resume and Cuban Junior Featherweight Guillermo Rigondeaux both continue to search for a worthwhile opponent to establish their names.

Many experts believe that the fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao will be the last big pay-per-view for boxing. Mayweather and Pacquiao are superstars of this generation and finding worthy successors could be a long process. If the right fights are made and the combatants are willing, we could see a resurgence in a sport that was once the undisputed champion.

Janice de Belen still in good terms with Gerald, Maja

Actress Janice de Belen has worked with former couple Gerald

Anderson and Maja Salvador in different projects. However the recent separation of the two Kapamilya talents put Janice in the controversy that linked her to their breakup. Yet the ex-lovers already denied the issue in separate interviews. For her

part, the veteran actress said she's in good terms with Gerald and Maja, although she hasn't gotten the chance to meet any of them yet.

Janice is however concerned with how her children are affected by the rumors. She admitted this made her consider cutting any communication with Gerald just to stop the rumors about them. Yet

she later concluded that she should not be affected by unfounded rumors from people who are out to destroy their friendship.

Gerphil Flores shines in ‘AGT’

Filipina classical singer Gerphil Geraldine Flores only made it to the semi-finals of the on ABS-

CBN’s “Pilipinas Got Talent (PGT). However everything turned out alright for her in the end, with Asia noticing her talent via AXN’s “Asia’s Got Talent (AGT).”

The 24-year-old fifth year student from the University of the Philippines Diliman finished third in the recently concluded first season of AGT behind Mongolian musical ensemble Khusugtun and grand winner a shadow play group from Tanauan, Batangas.

YOUR FIRST CHOICE FOR PEACE OF MIND SAFETY AND SECURITY, PROVIDING BETTER SOLUTIONS FOR OVER 10 YEARS

Special Business FeatureNot Your Average JobToro Security & Event Services Inc.

Colin Harris has an office filled with autographed concert memorabilia, including a black and white photo signed by the late B.B. King. How did he manage to meet some of the most prolific musicians to have ever visited Manitoba?

He worked as a security guard.

In 2001, Harris lost his wife to breast cancer. Shortly after his wife’s passing, he was asked to work security at a Headstones concert. The interactions at his posts and camaraderie he developed with his team helped him ease through the healing process of losing a loved one. He was later happily remarried to a wonderful woman.

After working for many years at OBO Security and eventually as a Manager at Paladin Security, Harris joined Toro Security in 2011. At the time, the on-demand security company provided other security providers with additional staff for large events. Harris saw an opportunity to cut out the middle man and save on costs for their clients.

In 2012, Toro Security was rebranded and restructured to become Toro Security & Event Services Inc. Since its inception ten years ago, the independently-owned and operated company has grown from offering basic on-demand security to providing crowd management for events with over 30,000 attendees. Their services include:

•Event-based security•Corporate security•Construction sites•Mobile security•Personal home security•Loss prevention for retail outlets

“We pride ourselves in being owner-managed and security-focused,” says Harris. “We will always try to match the right post to the right guard.”

Their event-based staff consists of over 100 trained guards, and current portfolio includes security orders for the Red River Exhibition, TD Winnipeg International Jazz Festival and Niverville Olde Tyme Country Fair.

“At some points, we have up to 150 security guards working at one time,” says Scheduling and Operations Supervisor Bien Cudia, who schedules all events. His role is to ensure everyone arrives on time and is the right guard for the assigned post.

In the Filipino community, they provide security for the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba (PCCM), and also offer services for debuts and socials.

Toro Security & Event Services recently opened a branch in Brandon, and provides services all throughout Manitoba. They

currently offer specialized training in:•Cultural Awareness•Customer Service Skills•Behaviour and Crisis Management •Basic Self Defense and Handcuffing•Commercial Building Dynamics•Crowd Management •Critical Emergency Response•Communications•Hotel Security •CPR First Aid•Loss Prevention (LPO)•Event Security Strategies•Report Writing and Note Taking •Spontaneous Edge Weapon Defense•Preventing Workplace Bulling and Harassment •Suicide Awareness•Mental Health Awareness•Liquor Commission Guidelines

“The whole security industry is changing, and now it’s becoming more customer-service oriented,” says Harris. “We look for people who can converse with others and have respect for those around them.”

Toro Security & Event Services employs a wide spectrum of individuals with various professional backgrounds, ranging from doctors to high school drop-outs.

“So many people rely on us, whether they’re working full-time or part-time. There’s a strong team spirit here and everyone helps each other. Our staff truly feels like they’re a part of something.”

They offer one of the most cost-effective security training courses for those interested in becoming a security guard. To obtain a license, potential applicants must be over the age of 18 and pass Criminal Record and Child Abuse Registry Checks. The mandatory 40-hour security guard course is offered at the Toro Security & Event Services office.

Looking towards the future, Harris and his team hope to continue developing their security company in the areas of career development, self-defense for women and corporate security.

“We hope to grow to a point where we can offer lifelong jobs and positions for our staff.”

Toro Security & Event Services is looking for outgoing personalities to join their dynamic team for summer events and their year-long roster. To apply, visit their office at 1151 Henderson Hwy. and see Bien Cudia or visit torosecurity.com.

St. Petersburg, Russia, a "Living Museum" (Part II)

By land and by sea in two days - that's how we experience St. Petersburg,

considered as one of the most magically beautiful places on the planet. Built over 42 islands with 5 million people, the city known as the "Venice of the North" because of its canals crossed by 342 bridges, is surrounded by water and therefore getting out in a boat to cruise its rivers and canals is a must otherwise you won't see its greater vistas.

Our day - 2 guided tour started with an hour drive to the town of Pushkin formerly called "Tsarskoye Selo" (Tsar's Village) to visit Catherine Palace, one of the masterpieces of the world

architecture. Built from 1752 to 1756 this lavish imperial palace was designed by an architect named Rastrelli for Russian Empress Elizabeth who named it Catherine Palace in honour of her mother Catherine. It's also a summer retreat for the Romanov tsars and Russian nobility. You'll be amazed by the palace grand baroque facade trimmed in gold and adorned with a profusion of atlantes (sculptural figures of man used as columns), pilasters and ornamental window framings.

The palace contains a series of magnificent rooms including the famous Portrait Hall, the Throne Room and the gem of the palace, the Amber Room. The Portrait

Hall displays formal depictions of Russian rulers and also features a number of paintings of Empress Catherine and Empress Elizabeth and the jaw-dropping Throne Room, the principal stateroom, is the official venue for imperial and high-society receptions.

The Amber Room, sometimes dubbed as the "Eighth Wonder of the World" due to its singular beauty with extraordinary architectural features such as the gilded carvings, amber panels (boasts 6 tons of precious amber from lemony yellow colour to deep red (worth about $142 million US dollars today), gold leafs, gemstones, and mirrors all highlighted with candle lights. Other design features are statues of angels and children.

At noon time of the glorious sunny day in august long daylight hour, we take a leisurely walk through the Landscape Park gardens of the palace animated with neo-gothic Admiralty (a complex of three pavilions), Chesme Column (a reminder of Russian naval war victories), Turkish Bath (memorial to Russian-Turkish war), Marble Bridge, and Hermitage Pavilion (much like a miniature palace) set around the central lake.

Then it's time for traditional Russian lunch which consists of black bread (dark coarse bread of rye flour), hot soup and meat and potatoes and of course with Russian vodka.

Our busy day ended with a relaxing cruise around St. Petersburg's network of canals and rivers including the main waterway of the city, the Neva River, taking Gem & Lita in front of Catherine Palace.

in different perspective on its architecture and sights. We sail past the historical buildings of the Academy of Arts, the English and University Embankments lined with palaces of the nobility and the Senate Square.

You should know: If you go ashore from the cruise ship with an organized shore excursion with a licensed tour guide you need only carry your passport. You don't need a visa, however if you want to do independent touring of St.

Petersburg or any other Russian city you're required to have a visa. Russian is the official language but English is widely spoken. Local currency is the Russian ruble (one $US is equivalent to 52.108 Russian ruble (Russian ruble = .0192000 $US) Major cards are widely accepted and most souvenir shops accept US dollars. However some restaurants and other shops require the use of rubles.

Sudoku Puzzles are games of patience, numbers and genius! The satisfaction of solving a challenging Sudoku Puzzle is one of the greatest accomplishments any sudoku game player can experience. Here is the puzzle. Good luck!

Solutions for Palaisipan & Sudoku will be posted online www.FilipinoJournal.com

You’ll need to go through what could be a tricky week and your best-laid plans could come to nothing. Rather than worry and be furious, use this opportunity to research your options and get more information. Avoid manipulative and pushy people, particularly anyone who may have an axe to grind. Stick with upbeat, generous folks for positive experiences and a happy social life.

Money matters could be subject to delays. You may have to roll with the punches, particularly if unexpected expenses show up or a payment doesn’t materialize. Even so, this might set you thinking about ways to improve matters and get your money working harder for you.

Uneasiness and a desire to flee the real world may be stirring within you. Quick decisions could likely cause trouble. If in doubt, a chat with a good friend can help you make the best choice. Some people may seem more aloof or distant than usual. Try not to take this personally, as it could be a different matter in a few days.

News may arrive out of the blue involving a friend or relative who needs your help and support. There could be further obstacles to overcome this week. A patient approach can help you avoid strain and struggle. By the weekend you’ll be ready to kick back with good friends and indulge a little!

Your pleasure and romance sector suggests a tendency to conserve your time and energy. Mercury on a retrograde could coincide with a lull in your social life. You’ll still have fun, but you’ll also have more time to relax and recharge. Don’t let someone’s edgy mood affect your enjoyment of a fun event on Friday.

Mercury’s retrograde could bring goals and personal ambitions to a halt. However, this can bring just the chance you need to rethink your plans. Such delays can expose weaknesses that might not otherwise show up. Turbulent influences could keep you on your toes, so it’s important to take time out to relax.

If you can iron out a family disagreement or handle a difference of opinion, then the week ahead has much to offer. There may be one or two issues to tackle, and these are likely to involve other people’s stubborn mindset. There will be more than enough to keep you happily occupied once the Sun dances into Gemini on Thursday.

Don’t let anyone rush you into making a decision or commitment before you’re ready. It’s essential to read the fine print of a contract or legal document before you sign. Someone may be feeling extra sensitive, making you feel like you’re walking on eggshells. In this situation it pays to be honest rather than tolerate someone’s manipulative tendencies.

Cultivating a taste for the novel or exotic in people and ideas can open you up to wonderful new experiences. Explore opportunities that can help further your interests and expand your horizons. Think twice before signing important documents, particularly if there’s a lot of money at stake. This week can also bring fresh perspectives to ongoing problems, encouraging ingenious solutions.

With wit, charm, and a positive outlook you somehow manage to say the most difficult things and get away with it. It’s a good time to convince someone that you’re the right candidate for a job or new relationship. However, it might not be all clear sailing this week, as someone’s stubborn outlook could put things on hold. Don’t take any criticisms personally, instead go with the flow.

A surprise may be in store this week. There’s a chance you’ll bump into someone you once knew or hear from an old college or work pal. It might also be wise to check on those you haven’t seen in a while and offer support should they need it. Romantic opportunities seem plentiful, but you may prefer to explore subjects of interest or perhaps get involved in competitive sports to burn off excess energy.

Someone may share a secret that alters how you view a situation. In this instance it affects you in a good way. A guest may cancel or a party may not proceed as planned. You might have to contend with obstacles, but a cheery, upbeat approach can help you breeze through the coming days.

Power up Your Job SearchMatt Purdey | Manitoba Start

As spring and summer hiring season in Winnipeg gets into full swing, many

job seekers are considering their options, searching for ways to stand out from the crowd, and looking to gain traction with potential employers. One way job seekers can make a positive impression is by adding a Personal Power Statement to their marketing materials and approach with employers. What is a Personal Power Statement? It’s a brief statement (two or three sentences) about your values and beliefs. It’s a summary of who you are as a person and employee. It describes your vision of success and outlines the strategies you use to achieve your vision. Why should you create a Personal Power Statement? First, it can assist job seekers in evaluating options. If you know what’s important to you, the type of work that satisfies you, and how you work best, you can determine which jobs are a good fit. Second, it can distinguish you from other applicants by presenting a clear, concise, and consistent message to employers. Third, by articulating your skills and then aligning them with a specific job or a company’s values, you can solidify your application as a serious contender. How do you create a Personal Power Statement? Follow this five-step process* to develop your own Personal Power Statement.

Step 1: Identify Success. Identify four or five personal

examples of success. They can be work-related or other accomplishments (for example, completing a major project, reaching a fundraising goal, etc.). Step 2: Identify Core Values.

Think about the qualities or characteristics you needed to be successful (for example, patient, creative, focused, etc.). List as many qualities and characteristics as possible, and then identify the four or five most important values.Step 3: Identify Contributions.

Shift your focus to the future. What contributions would you like to make to your friends and family? To your future employer? To your community? To the world?Step 4: Identify Goals.

What do you want to accomplish personally? What do you want to accomplish professionally?Step 5: Write Personal Power Statement.

Using the information you have collected from the previous four steps, try summarizing your values and beliefs, personal characteristics, and your vision of success into two or three sentences.

Here is an example of a completed Personal Power Statement:

“As a big picture thinker with a keen eye for detail, I strive to understand challenges at both the macro and micro levels. This allows me to use my project planning

skills, ingenuity, and commitment to quality assurance to resolve technical issues while contributing to the collective goals of the organization I work with.”How do you use a Personal Power Statement? Personal Power Statements can be used in a variety of ways including:•In resumes, to add distinction to your Professional Summary or Personal Profile. •In cover letters, to add authenticity to an introductory or closing paragraph.•During interviews, to respond to traditionally difficult questions, such as “What does success mean to you?” or “Why should we hire you?”•When networking, to interest others and invite further discussion.

A Personal Power Statement can help bring out the best version of you. Whether you are considering career options, trying to secure an interview, or just want to impress a potential employer, a Personal Power Statement is a powerful idea!

New Albums to Check Out (part 1)

People who rely only on commercial media (T.V. and radio, that is) are the ones

who always complain that “There’s no more good music nowadays.” They blame their lack of initiative and resourcefulness on the scoopery mentality of many music journalists. (“Scoopery” means the penchant to claim that what we see in the commercial or mainstream media is the only music available.)

Only a gullible person is usually duped by such bogus journalists, who are there only for the scoop and not really for an authentic love for music. If you are a music enthusiast and are doing your homework, then you should have long known that there will always be interesting artists and music in any given year. All you need is the passion for it and the initiative to look for them. Where? You can

buy NME, Mojo, Rolling Stone, Kerrang!, Gramophone, or any other specialty music magazines that cater to your preferred genre of music. There’s the Internet! Simply google your favorite artist or band to know what’s new about them, especially to know if there’s a new album out.

For instance, here are some albums released recently that might cater to your taste.

Blur–The Magic Whip (April 2015) (Britpop)

If you’re a fan of the glossy and shiny type of Britpop, then The Magic Whip is for you. After all, Blur is one of the original purveyors of Britpop music, and the album preceding this was released 12 years ago, and all four original members are involved in it; so, the album should be worth the wait. Recommended songs: “New World Towers,” “Thought I Was a Spaceman,” “My Terracotta Heart.” 10,000 Maniacs – Twice Told Tales (April 2015) (Indie Folk)

Whether the vocalist was Natalie Merchant or Mary Ramsey, 1 0 , 0 0 0 Maniacs’ music has always been alluring, classy, and nostalgic. In this ninth album of theirs, the band have further delved into their Folk roots, reconstructing age-old Folk songs and tunes that can take the attentive and introspective listener to a rustic journey filled with

European tales and stories set to contemporary Indie Folk music. Recommended songs: “She Moved through the Fair,” “Bonny May,” and “Marie’s Wedding.” Steve Hackett – Wolflight (March 2015) (Progressive Rock)

What can we expect from the guitar meister of Genesis who helped architect the English band’s music during its classic Progressive Rock phase in the 1970s? What else, but a solid and tight album of well-crafted, thickly textured, and elaborately orchestrated music rich with Hackett’s guitar wizardry. After all, Hackett never really stopped from playing and making music since his time with Genesis and pursuing a solo career in 1977. Unsurprisingly, Wolflight is the 24th studio album of the ever proficient and prolific guitarist and songwriter. Recommended songs: “Wolflight,” “The Wheel’s Turning,” and “Black Thunder.”The Charlatans U.K. – Modern Nature (January 2015) (Alternative Rock)

Another Britpop pioneer, The Charlatans U.K. stands out from all the shine and sheen because of their predilection for old Soul and Psychedelia, which they incorporate effectively in their brand of Alternative Rock with Pop sensibilities. Modern Nature is the English band’s 12th studio album, and all the distinct characteristics that its predecessors’ contain all remain intact—jangly guitars, Hammond organ, driving bass, airdrumming-inducing beats and rhythms, and most especially Tim Burgess’s dreamy vocals. Recommended songs: “Talking in Tones,” “Emilie,” “Let the Good Times Be Never Ending.”Katrina Leskanich (of Katrina & the Waves) – Blisland (August 2014) (Country Pop)

The voice behind “Walking on Sunshine” is back with another solo effort. Blisland can be blissful not only for old fans of Katrina & the Waves’ New-Wavey kind of Pop but also for contemporary music fans who enjoy Country Pop in the veins of Faith Hill, Shania Twain,

Dixie Chicks, and Taylor Swift. Recommended songs: “Sun Coming Upper,” “Definition,” and

“Texas Cloud.”Final Note

These are just a few of the new albums released

recently. If you’re really a music lover and have been

doing your homework, then there’s no excuse for claiming that there’s no more good music these days. Surely you’re simply not looking in the right places.
