AC/DC treated Winnipeg to a hell of a concert on Sept. 17 at the Field

The Winnipeg concert of the Metal band AC/DC, held at Investors Group

Field on September 17, was high-voltage, thunderous, and hellishly good. The venue was transformed into a cold, windy, smoking hell of thousands of mostly red-horned screaming fans.

The stage design was fantastic, complete with a giant bell and an enormous blow-up female doll with a lot of cleavage.

Fireworks and cannons that literally shot and banged pyros were in place.

The set opened with the title track from the latest album, Rock or Bust, and then it proceeded to treat the audience to a feast of classics that included "Hell Ain't a Bad Place," "Back in Black," "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap," my personal favorite "Thunderstruck," "High Voltage," "Rock 'n' Roll Train," "Hells Bells," the crowd favorite "You Shook Me All Night Long," "Sin City" for which the giant sexy doll was there, the cannon-heavy "T.N.T.," and the anthemic "Let There Be Rock."

Of course, the audience wanted more after the last proper song was rendered, so the band with their weapons retaliated to the stage and gave their audience two encores, "Highway to Hell" and "For Those about to Rock (We Salute You),"which was an apt gig closer.

The only remaining original member of the band, Angus Young, in his trademark schoolboy attire, led the whole band onstage, rocking and wriggling and punishing his guitar with his ever-proficient fingers. Lead vocalist Brian Johnson gave his best raspy voice and was also strutting alongside Young onstage, albeit he was obviously struggling occasionally in some songs. Second guitarist Stevie Young, Bass player Cliff Williams, and drummer Chris Slade, although not that animated up there, made their presence felt by providing a tight and solid rhythm section to their two frontmen.

The crowd went home still high with the music. The only downside was the after-concert traffic that built up around the venue. It took about an hour to drive towards downtown which takes only about fifteen minutes on an ordinary day. However, who would dare complain when AC/DC gave their fans that night a taste of how good hell could be?

Overall, AC/DC was electrifying, dynamic, and awesome; so as their highly charged brand of Metal.

Formed in 1973 in Sydney, Australia, by the Scotland-born brothers Angus and Malcolm Young, AC/DC is one of the enduring and prolific bands in the Rock/Metal genre. In its 42 years, AC/DC has released 16 studio albums, from High Voltage (1975)

to Rock or Bust (2014). The music of AC/DC is best characterized by the trademark razor-sharp power-chord guitar strums, sparkling guitar adlibs, and the high-pitched vocals. Structure-wise, AC/DC songs are more straightforward, less complex, and less flashy

compared with other Metal bands; its music is rooted more on Blues and basic Rock 'n' Roll than on Classical. Other Metal bands whose musical style fall in the same league as AC/DC includes Van Halen, Motörhead, and Anthrax.

Guertin Marine is the leading Alumacraft, Princecraft, and Triton boar dealership in the city. If you are in the market for a boat or are interested in exploring options and possibilities, go see Brayden Sywy at Guertin Equipment. Their showroom is located at 35 Melnick Rd on the south perimeter between Lagimodiere Blvd and St. Anne's Rd. In addition to fishing boats, they also carry a wide range of pontoon boats, off-road recreatiinal vehicles, STIHL and John Deere products as well.

Bacoor Association Fishin' DerbyThe 6th annual Bacoor

fishing derby took place on September 26 at Selkirk

Park. Despite the low water and hurricane like wind conditions, over 90 anglers lined the shoreline during the 10am to 2:30pm derby for their shot at the top prize of $500 and a coveted champion's trophy. One of the key organizers of the event, Jaime Reyes, stated that the main goal of running this annual derby is to raise funds for the association's Youth Bursary Program. "Even though it's windy, we appreciate everyone who is out here supporting us." Free hotdogs, donuts, coffee, and drinks were made available to all participants and their families.

Councillor Mike Pagtakhan who helped organize and is a sponsor of the event, thanked on behalf of the committee the other sponsors including Cabela's, Walmart, Gino Baines, and Tim Horton's. After all of the more than 200 recorded catches and weights were tallied, the title was awarded to Ferdinand Balite. Ferd caught an impressive 22 total fish

Philippines- Five Ranks Higher in Global Competitiveness

The Philippines’ ranking at the World Competitiveness continues to improve as it

moved five notches up in the World Economic Forum (WEF)’s Global Competitiveness Index 2015-2016.

Previously ranked as 52nd out of 144 economies, the country now

ranks as 47th among 140 economies. The WEF rankings are based on the effect of institutions and policies on the level of productivity of a country.

The Philippines received the highest ranking in terms of macroeconomic environment

followed by market size and business sophistication.

However, the country lacked in progress in terms of infrastructure, labor market efficiency and goods market efficiency.

The country’s improvement in the global ranking is welcomed by the foreign business groups, but also pointed out that the Philippines need to focus on the most problematic factors in order to be totally competitive.

Kamikazee bids farewellIn their desire to explore life

outside the band, members of the once-popular Filipino rock

band Kamikazee finally disbanded after 15 years in the local music scene. The band held its last bar gig on Monday night at 12 Monkeys Music Hall & Pub in Makati City, although it said it will hold a final show in December.

Kamikazee was formed during the early 2000s and is composed of Jay Contreras, Led Tuyay, Jomal Linao, Puto Astete and Bords Burdeos. The hard rock group was known for their original compositions and recorded four albums, including 2006's “Maharot” which had hits such as “Narda,” “Chiksilog” and “Martyr Nyebera.” Its other hits include “Huling Sayaw,” and “Wala.”

VW Emissions Scandal Won’t Affect PH Sales

The diesel emissions scandal erupted worldwide on Sept. 22 when Volkswagen, the

world’s top-selling automaker, admitted on using the same software called “defeat device” to manipulate emission tests in the United States on 11 million cars produced worldwide.

The scandal is unlikely to affect sales of diesel-fueled motor vehicles in the Philippines as emissions standards in Asian countries are

much less stricter than those in the United States.

Last September 8, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ordered Volkswagen to recall nearly half a million diesel-fed cars for intentionally programming software to switch engines to a cleaner mode during official emissions testing.

Volkswagen is now facing fines up to $18 billion apart from class-action lawsuits for marketing

“clean diesel” cars as being environmentally friendly.

Volkswagen Philippines states that all of the vehicles it sells are Euro 4 compliant and that they are operating within the bounds of the law.

Euro 4 is the emissions standard that was phased out in Europe in 2009, which is now enforcing Euro 6, while the United States implements Tier 3, one of the most stringent emission standards in the world.

Papa Francisco and Xi Dada in AmericaPresident Barack Obama

must be elated that in a matter of days, he had

played host to two of the world’s most powerful leaders. Arriving within days of each other, Pope Francis, the spiritual leader and

symbolic head of the world’s 1.2 billion Roman Catholics, and President Xi Jinping, the supreme leader of China’s 1.3 billion people, crisscrossed the U.S. in a mission of goodwill.

Pope Francis’ visit to the U.S. was his first. He was also the first Pope to address a joint session of Congress, an occasion that was significant only because he touched on a sensitive issue that has been rocking America’s political establishment – immigration. He reminded his audience that we should not be fearful of foreigners. “We, the people of this continent, are not fearful of foreigners, because most of us were once foreigners,” he said. “I say this to you as the son of immigrants, knowing that so many of you are also descended from immigrants.” Being the son of immigrants, his comments were a testament to his family’s search for a better life. His father’s family left Italy in 1929 to escape the fascist regime of Benito Mussolini. They found it in Argentina.

Born on December 17, 1936 in Buenos Aires, Jorge Mario Bergoglio was the eldest of five children of Mario José Bergoglio and his wife Regina María Sívori, who is a daughter of Italian immigrants. Little did they know that their son Jorge would someday become Pope.

After Pope Francis’ address to Congress, Speaker John Boehner – who was once an altar boy – invited him to have dinner with him and other congressional leaders. The Pope politely declined the invitation, saying that he has a date with the homeless; he would be serving them meals at St. Patrick’s Church in Washington, DC. Ground Zero

After his meeting with Obama at the White House, where they discussed climate change, Pope Francis left for New York City where a hectic schedule awaited him. He addressed the United Nations General Assembly and then went to the Ground Zero Memorial where he prayed for the victims of 9/11. In a few words of wisdom, he encapsulated the events of 9/11 into the human psyche, saying: “This place of death became a place of life too, a place of saved lives, a hymn to the triumph of life over the prophets of destruction and death, to goodness over evil, to reconciliation and unity over hatred and division.”Trade violations

Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping – called “Xi Dada” or “Big Daddy Xi” by his people – was busy meeting business

people across the U.S. On his first stop in Seattle, Washington State, Xi impressed the media when it was announced that China was buying 300 commercial airplanes from Boeing worth $38 billion. However, the deal includes a plan to build a 737 completion center in China that generated protests from Boeing’s labor union. The planned completion center -- installing interiors, painting, and delivering the planes – would mean closing the plants in Renton, North Carolina and at the Boeing Field in Everett, Washington, and moving the jobs to China. Trade experts believe that the controversial deal violates the Agreement on Trade in Civil Aircraft, which is a “side agreement” among member-countries of the World Trade Organization (WTO).No compromise

Speaking at a joint press conference with Xi on September 25, Obama reiterated concerns about China’s reclamation, construction, and militarization of disputed islands in the South China Sea (SCS), Xi responded in no uncertain terms: “Islands in the South China Sea, since ancient times, are China’s territory. We have the right to uphold our own territorial sovereignty and lawful and legitimate maritime rights and interests.” He added, “Relevant construction activity that China is undertaking in the Nansha Islands [Spratly Islands] does not target or impact any country and there is no intention to militarize.”

With those words, Xi made it crystal clear that the SCS is Chinese property and that it’s not negotiable. With a “no compromise” stand on territorial ownership of the SCS, Xi appears to be telling Obama, “If you go to war against us, we will annihilate America.” He made his point clear last September 3 when in celebrating the 70th anniversary of Japan’s defeat in World War II, Xi paraded China’s military might that included seven new types of offensive missiles, two of which were labeled in plain English, “Carrier Killer” and “Guam Killer.” Raising the ante

On September 24 – on the eve of the Obama-Xi summit meeting at the White House – it was reported in the news that China is launching a new ballistic missile submarine that could potentially target any part of the U.S. by the

end of 2015. Further, the report said, “The Jin-class submarines will be armed with the new JL-2 ballistic missile. This missile has a range of 4,000 nautical miles, which would allow the submarine target Hawaii, Alaska, and portions of the west coast of the US from the waters off of East Asia.”

And instead of softening his hard-line stand on the South China Sea disputes -- which is a common courtesy in the world of high-level diplomacy – Xi raised the ante on the eve of his state visit when Chinese authorities arrested an American citizen, Phan Phan-Gillis, for spying. She was part of a business delegation from Houston when she was detained six months ago. Her husband, Jeff Gillis, told the New York Times, “It is the most stupid politics in the world to arrest a U.S. citizen the week that Xi Jinping is coming to the United States for a state visit on political charges of spying.”Good vs. evil

It is evident that Pope Francis and Xi Jinping’s visits to America have made contrasting impressions on the American people. On one hand, Papa Francisco had a profound impact on America as Americans of various religious beliefs and political persuasions had embraced the Pope’s message of peace and love. Indeed, Papa Francisco’s visit had brought together a people beset with seemingly insurmountable problems facing them: from immigration to the sanctity of life, from the plight of the poor to social justice.

On the other hand, Xi Dada brought a message of mixed signals that created an atmosphere of mistrust and belligerence. Instead of bridging the gap that separates the world’s leading democracy and communist China’s godless society that values authoritarian elitism at the expense of human rights, Xi’s visit demonstrated that world peace is like a star – you see it glow in your eyes but far too distant to reach. It’s just a dream but Papa Francisco had made us believe that peace can be achieved through faith while Xi Dada tried to convince the world that universal peace can only be achieved with the economic, cultural, and existential destruction of America.

But as history has manifested it too often, in the end good shall prevail over evil.

AlDub’s 25.6 million tweets a new Guinness World Record?The 25.6 million tweets

that the hashtag # A l D u b E B f o r L O V E

reportedly drew from 12 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Sept. 26 may be a new Guinness World Record.

However Michael DiCarso, the Guinness World Records head for ASEAN records said that they needed to go through standard procedures to determine if AlDub indeed was able to break the records. Currently the Super Bowl XLIX event in the United States holds the record for the most tweeted about in 2015, with 25.1 million tweets sent.

Many fans believed that AlDub has already surpassed Super Bowl's record as netizens from all over the world have also expressed interest in the onscreen couple, wondering why they trend almost every single day.

Meanwhile, Vice Ganda one of the hosts of the rival show of GMA "It's Showtime" in ABS-CBN said that even before the loveteam 'AlDub' became famous, there is already a competition between the two stations, ABS-

CBN and GMA. He added that it is not only in the noontime show, but for all of the shows as well. He also claims that the rivalry is a healthy competition to continuously provide a better show for the televiewers.

The baby girl will be named Maria Letizia G. Dantes.

The 31-year-old Kapuso Primetime Queen said the baby shower was a surprise for her as it was arranged by his mother, Amy and friend Teena Barretto. Present at the event were Ana Feleo,

Roxanne Barcelo, stylists Bambi Fuentes, and Liz Uy.

Marian is thirty-weeks pregnant and is expected to give

birth in November. She said she wants to deliver their first child by NSD (Natural Spontaneous Delivery).

Winnipeg Jets Report

by Derick Ramos@DerickRamos

Photos by Star Roxas | Filipino Journal

Boarding Pass: Winnipeg Jets 2015-2016 Season Preview

After reaching new heights last season, the Winnipeg Jets have much higher

expectations in their 2015-2016 campaign. Winnipeg set a Thrashers/Jets franchise record with 99 points and made the playoffs for the first time since 2007. To get back to the postseason, the Jets will rely heavily on the developed chemistry of the core along with an influx of young talent.

ON THE OFFENSIVE The Jets provided two quality scoring lines last season with Andrew Ladd and Bryan Little scoring 24 goals on the first line and Blake Wheeler

providing the spark on the second line with 26 goals. Fan favorite, Michael Frolik, signed with the Calgary Flames in the offseason but Adam Lowry will look to fill the void with his solid play. Drew Stafford, Mark Scheifele, and Mathieu Perreault will provide some secondary scoring punch.

DEFENSIVE MINDED One of the Jets strengths last season was their improved defense. Dustin Byfuglien and Jacob Trouba will anchor the back end and will now have the services of Tyler Myers for a full season. Tobias Enstrom, Ben Chiarot, and Mark Stuart round out the defensive core.

MASKED MEN Ondrej Pavelec and Michael Hutchinson will backstop the Jets once again. At one point last season, Hutchinson overtook Pavelec as the starter when he went on a hot streak. By the end of the year, Pavelec regained the starting job with his excellent netminding to close out the season. Pavelec will head into this season as the starter but Hutchinson has proven to be up to the challenge if called upon in relief. Also just a phone call away is Connor Hellebuyck who

had success in the AHL and in the World Championships for Team USA.

NEW FACES Michael Frolik wasn't the only player to leave the Winnipeg Jets in the offseason as Lee Stempniak and Jiri Tlusty both departed for the New Jersey Devils. General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff will attempt to fill up the roster with some promising young talent. Highly touted rookie, Nikolaj Ehlers looks to lead the youth movement along with Andrew Copp and Nicolas Petan. Cheveldayoff also reached out to a familiar face bringing back Alexander Burmistrov from the KHL.

FILIPINO JOURNAL PREDICTION With Ladd, Little, and Wheeler leading the way along with a defense that can both shut down opponents and score,

it wouldn't be a surprise to see the Jets improve on last season's performance. Have your white shirts ready for the spring.
