The Reel Story Never Ends(On Some Recommendable Films through the Decades)The 1980s: Some Kind of Wonderful (1987)

For this yet another series of articles on pop culture, I will cite quintessential youth-oriented films that became a

sort of gems especially to those who were teenagers during the decade such movies were released or shown in theaters. But, have in mind that your age should not be a hindrance in being able to appreciate the beauty of these films, especially if you treat them as mere reflections of the youth culture of the decade when they were made. After all, stripped of all the technological, aesthetic, and musical

aspects of the films, the storylines (which are usually universal human experiences) remain to be the heart of such movies.

Because the 1980s was the decade when I was a teenager, I will start this series with the said decade. But, this does not mean that I am unable to feel similar enthusiasm with films and arts that originate from other decades. I will also feature many of them in the coming issues.

Without further ado, here’s one of my favorite youth-oriented movies released in the 1980s.Some Kind of Wonderful (1987)

Among the so-called trilogy of John Hughes’ quintessential ’80s youth-oriented films—Breakfast Club (1985), Pretty in Pink (1986), and Some Kind of Wonderful (1987), the last remains to be my favorite primarily because of the iconic quality of the movie’s characters, particularly the cute tomboy-looking drummer Watts (Mary Stuart Masterson); the cool guy Keith (Eric Stoltz), who had an impressive vinyl-record collection in the movie; the girl of his fantasy, the popular student Amanda Jones (Lea Thompson); Amanda’s detestable rich boyfriend, Hardy (Craig Sheffer); the skinhead Duncan (Elias Koteas); the punk Ray (Scott Coffey), who had a crush on Watts; and Keith’s pesky sister, Laura (Maddie Corman). The story revolved around a love angle—Watts and Keith are bestfriends; Watts secretly loves Keith, but

embroidered gown by Fanny Serrano, in her well-composed presence, waves to her adoring fans; meanwhile, the resident conductor, Julian Pellicano together with the 67-member Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, starts the intro of her 1st song, “Free Again/I will Survive, the audience has welcomed Pilita Corrales with all hearts, souls and minds; and her second song, “Dahil Sa Iyo”, an iconic song which is closest to the hearts of the Filipino-Canadians who come to the Centennial Concert Hall to see her, to hear her unfaltering sweet voice, and to watch her iconic singing style, has set up a very special experiential musical journey of the night.

“Dahil Sa Iyo” is the first salvo of Pilita Corrales’ performance to touch the very essence of being a Filipino; and after her command performance, she has received a resounding applause from the audience.And she greets the audience with smile, with a welcoming presence, and with a touch of sense of humour.

“She is still the best singer in the Philippines, so professional and with a great sense of humour.She has never changed. I have heard again, in person, her sweet melodic voice I heard in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. I am so lucky to see her again,” a senior member of OFSAM says with a glow in her eyes. “I did explain to my younger family members who is Pilita Corrales, and now they see her and hear her songs, and now they love her.”

“I will not forget her performance tonight, she is so beautiful, and she has not changed, she is still our very own Pilita Corrales. Glad I did decide to watch her show with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, it is a

The night is not the time for the favorite oldies, rather it is a moment of timeless memories of her songs which have become part of musical experience among the Filipinos who were born in an early age; and that night when Pilita Corrales, an artist who has the voice so familiar to the older generation, has crossed many age levels.Her performance with added humour and well-engaged with the audience has become the mood of the night. Her performance has a touch of class, a touch of personal nostalgia for the seniors; and a new musical experience for the younger generations.

As the first Filipino vocalist to perform with the prestigious Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Pilita Corrales does not disappoint her fans. Her many decades of being a song writer, movie and tv personality, a comedian, a compleat singer-artist; and the many awards and citations she received for all her performances in the local and in the international stages, Pilita Corrales is still loved by all, by all ages.

Norie Sayo, Pilita Corrales’ musical director, has also shown a musical dexterity to blend the performance of Pilita especially with some of the musical pieces popular to all the Filipinos; and her piano rendition of the song by the

legendary Canadian songwriter, Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” and performed by Pilita Corrales and blended with the sweet young voices of the Highlights Performing Group, the audience get inspired by the religious meaning of the song.

The Highlights Performing Group,under the direction of Ms. Joy Laud Lazo, has added a musical texture especially when Pilita Corrales and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra performed one of the most popular songs “Pipit” into a very folksy rendition.

A popular Visayan song, “Matud Nila” has brought down the concert hall where many of the Visayans are in the audience. Pilita Corrales addresses her kababayans from Visayas region, especially from her hometown, Cebu. Her performance turns into a warm reunion with her kababayans.

Julian Pellicano, the resident conductor, together with the 67-member of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, has enjoyed the warm, the highly professional presence of Pilita Corrales. And this musical teamwork has led to shine each individual talent. The collaboration is unforgetable and will be remembered for a long time. Indeed, the performance of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra with one and only one Pilita Corrales, as vocalist, has given justice to her songs, and to the high expectations of the adoring audience. As one said with a great smile, with a great satisfaction: “Pambihira ang show na ito ni Pilita Corrales. And this is my first time to hear the performance of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Adulation reigns supreme that night at the Centennial Concert Hall.Fans are asking for more songs; the seniors and the young alike gather in front of the stage to kiss her, to shake her hand, to voice out “how great you are, Pilita”, or “Ikaw pa rin ang aming favorite singer..” And as she receives flowers and special gift from the organizers, Pilita Corrales extends her thanks to everyone.

My favorite scenes are the intro, in which Watts was shown practice-drumming along Propaganda’s “Dr. Mabuse”; the museum scene in which Keith was giving Amanda the pair of earrings that he bought out of his college-tuition savings while Watts, who volunteered as their chauffeur for that date, was jealously observing the romantic tryst from several seats behind; the part when Duncan gatecrashed Hardys’s party where Amanda slapped Hardy in front of everyone; and the final scene when Keith finally realized whom he should end up with, with matching kiss and makeup and Lick the Tins’ cutesy version of “Can’t Help Falling in Love” playing in the background. Just like in music, the world of films has also many gems to offer from any given decade. Many usually older people fall in the folly of dissing films of the current generation, claiming that the best were made during the time when they were teenagers. Or, the reverse, many young people today would claim that old films suck. The folly of these myopic and subjective critics is their inability to appreciate the beauty of something that is new or unfamiliar to them or, at the least, their refusal to give these new things a chance to grow in them.

Annual white bass run in full swing

Every spring, many anglers in Manitoba actively target white bass during the

spawning migration into most creeks and rivers that are connected to Lake Winnipeg. These fish, also known in the Fil-Can community as ‘striped bass’, are most easily caught during this short time period from the May opening to around mid-June. When the run is at its peak, these spunky fish will school up by the hundreds in relatively shallow water and their voracious appetites

cause them to aggressively attack practically any presentation that an angler wants to tie on. The fact that they are extremely fun to catch and also make great table fare make the white bass run an eagerly awaited yearly tradition for many anglers in our community.

As anyone who has had a spawning run white bass on the end of their line can attest, the strikes are vicious as a big female can literally rip the rod right out of your hands. The fight is very similar

to the enjoyable smallmouth bass, the difference only being that the ‘whites’ have considerably less stamina than their pound for pound champion cousins. A Manitoba Master Angler white bass is 15”. During the annual run, the average size of bass caught is 13” to 17”. It is very likely that an angler will catch multiple trophy sized fish once they are honed in on a big school. Once the white bass are done spawning though, they return en masse back out to roam around Lake Winnipeg chasing their forage. As a result, the run always has a ‘get them while supplies last’ sense of urgency to it among the die hard ‘striped bass chasers’ amongst us.

Popular presentations to hook into white bass are lighter jigs (1/8oz – 1/4oz) trailed with 3” or 4” plastic grubs or swimbaits, shallow running crankbaits (1ft - 5ft), and my personal go-to lure the metal casting spoon. For those who tire of the constant cast and retrieve or ‘pahabol’, casting out a float with a light jig and minnow combo (3ft down) will do the job just as well if not better depending on where you are fishing.

A lot of anglers had great success earlier this season fishing from shore in the Gimli and Winnipeg Beach area. The run generally will start earlier on the west side from Riverton all the way down to the Netley Creek system. Most years the white bass don’t move into the east side tributaries and rivers until the water warms up somewhat which is usually later in May. Anglers fishing from boats can often head these schools off much earlier however by casting

remember. One of his earliest memories is fishing with a wooden stick and bobber while watching his dad cast for saugers below the dam at Lockport. A Juvenile Counselor at the Manitoba Youth Centre by day, Eric spends most of his free time these days pursuing several different angling endeavours. The self-admitted fishing addict can be seen competing at numerous fishing tournaments throughout the open water season. He is the creator and editor of the website kickerfish.ca which is dedicated to following

competitive fishing in the Manitoba and Northwest Ontario region. Eric is the organizer of two annual fishing derbies that raise money for charity and is a member of the Manitoba Bass Anglers association. In addition to writing fishing articles for The Filipino Journal, Eric also enjoys taking out family, friends, and out-of-town guests on angling adventures. Eric’s fishing addiction is supported by his understanding wife Divine and his daughters Alyssa and Kayla.

The possession limit of white bass for each angler is 25. Also, when seeking out potential shorelines to hunt for these schools of ‘stripers’, be mindful to respect all private property to avoid any possible trespassing situations. Please respect our outdoors and be safe when fishing everyone.

"THAT SHOW with Those Guys: Fifth Time's a Charm" was a bittersweet anniversary that saw Dexter Barcellano and Matthew Baron leave the group due to professional pursuits and welcome the return of Mac Taruc back to the fold.

Those Guys formed on an afternoon in September of 2009 when a group of 8 friends

realized they all wanted to sing a cappella, and that they might as well try to do it together. They haven’t looked back since. Group members Dexter Barcellano, Matthew Baron, Ben Campbell, James Campbell, Mike Engstrom, Derek Leenhouts, Simon Miron, and Bernie Pastorin have garnered a reputation for entertaining audiences with musically astute performances of many original arrangements, with lively vocal percussion and entrancing harmonies.

Time management: Identify the right things and do them

Janet’s alarm went off at 6 a.m., and she immediately felt overwhelmed. It was going to be a crazy day. She had employability skills training in the morning, a job interview over lunch, and a language assessment in the afternoon. She had scheduled an appointment with her dentist, and the company she agreed to volunteer with until she secured a job was expecting her today. There was grocery shopping to do. She peered out the window. It was raining. Janet just wanted to stay in bed.

Everyone faces times when they have too much to do and not

enough time to get it done. “The biggest myth in time management,” says Peter Bregman, “is the idea that we can get it all done.” Janet acknowledged that she wouldn’t be able to fit everything she wanted to into the day. The next step was to determine the “right things” she needed to accomplish that day.

To identify the “‘right things, we need to make deliberate choices that will move us toward the outcomes we most want,” says Bregman. This also means making choices “about what not to do.” Janet needed to be strategic. Her most important objective was to secure a job. The training, interview, and volunteer engagements were all part of achieving this goal. They were the “right things.” She reviewed her other tasks and decided to reschedule her dentist appointment and ask her sister to do the grocery shopping.

The second step in doing the “right things” is actually “doing” them—following through. Janet knew that she would need to stick to her priorities and deliberately shut

out other distractions. She would have to postpone long chats with friends and frequently checking social media. To be productive and stick to our priorities, Bregman says that “we need an environment that makes it more likely that we will do the things that matter most and less likely that we will waste our time with diversions.”

By the end of the day, Janet felt tired but satisfied. She had stayed focused and accomplished her most important objectives. Bregman teaches that “managing our time needs to become a ritual… an ongoing process we follow no matter what to keep us focused on our [daily] priorities.” Janet decided that she was going to keep a time diary for one week to help her identify if she was investing her time wisely. She would begin making a daily to-do list and focus on identifying the “right things” and “doing” them.1.Make a ritual of time management. When you get up, before you turn on your computer, or look at your phone or check Facebook or emails, set a plan for your day.2.Identify the right things, and do them.3.Review your plan throughout the day, and stay focused.4.Evaluate your day. What worked? Where did you get distracted? What can you do differently?

Richard Gutierrez mulls wedding plans

As Richard Gutierrez and Sarah Lahbati celebrated their second anniversary

as a couple, Richard revealed that marrying Sarah could be the next major step in his life following the couple’s recent revelation that they already have a baby.

The hunk actor shared on his Instagram account a photo captioned “My life,” showing their baby, Zion, being held by Sarah.

It took more than a year for the couple to reveal that they have become proud parents of a

baby boy. According to Richard’s mother, Annabelle Rama, they decided not to bring the little boy to the Philippines right after he was born in April last year because they were afraid he might get dragged into the legal issue involving the 20-year-old Fil-Swiss actress. After the baby was born in Switzerland, he was brought to the United States where Annabelle’s husband Eddie, Richard’s brother Elvis, and Sarah’s mother took care of him. The baby was brought to the Philippines this year.

Incidentally, the couple’s anniversary celebration coincided with the pilot episode of Gutierrez family’s reality show “It Takes GUTZ To Be A Gutierrez” last June 1.

golf groups started hitting the links in early May to kick off their 2014 golf season. The Philippine Amateur Golf Association of Manitoba (PAGAM) and Batangas Amateur Golf Association (BAGA) seasons are now in full swing.

The next two tournaments for BAGA are Saturday, June 7 at Meadows GC and Saturday, June 21 at Tuxedo GC. PAGAM will host their next two tournaments at Tuxedo GC on Sunday, June 8 and South Interlake GC on Sunday, June 22.

More Kids to Have More Opportunities To Pursue their

Passion for Basketball

Thousands of Winnipeg youth will be able to play more basketball this summer on

a new outdoor court at the École Stanley Knowles School thanks to funding from the Winnipeg Community Infrastructure Program, Children and Youth Opportunities Minister Kevin Chief, minister responsible for the City of Winnipeg, announced today.

"As a long-time basketball player, I can tell you sport opened many doors me. I want more kids to have more opportunities to pursue their passion for sports," said Minister Chief. "Sport facilities like this strengthen our communities and inspire us to play harder and give our best. The benefits of fitness and self confidence that are built through sport can last a lifetime."

The province provided the École Stanley Knowles School Parent Advisory Council with funding for a new, state-of-the-art outdoor basketball court. The project included replacing the existing cement and old poles with a new basketball court including

fencing, bleachers and lighting which is available for students, as well as the community.

"The students are ecstatic. There's nothing around us - it's quite a distance to go to the next place that has a play structure or a basketball court. Anyone in this part of the city now has access to the court for their children to play on as well. It gives the kids an avenue to exert some energy, do something positive and have some fun," said Heather Grant-Jury, president, École Stanley Knowles School Parent Advisory Council.

The Province of Manitoba committed $43,000 to the project through the Winnipeg Community Infrastructure Program, a three-year, $7.5-million program that provides grants to support not for profit or city-owned community recreation facilities within Winnipeg. The province also committed an additional $30,000 to the project through the Community Places Program, as well as $5,000 through the Sports Opportunities Program.

Let me say this. What a magnificent car!

Just like a kid in a candy store, every single minute behind the wheel of the new 2014 BMW 435i xDrive was exhilarating. In my short automobile journalist career, I can count on one hand the number of vehicles that came equipped with a manual transmission. Yes, a stick shift almost always guarantees happiness behind the wheel. Well, for me at least.

The new 2014 BMW 4-series replaces the 3-Series coupe. The 435i xDrive comes equipped with a 3 litre inline 6-cyclinder engine with 300hp and packs a punch. In several 0-100km/hr tests, acceleration times were between 5-6 seconds. Lots and lots of power under the hood especially when engaged in the Sport+Comfort driving mode.

The exterior of the new 435i is beautiful. The side body paneling is sleek and the added M styling offers a more aggressive look. The 435i is longer, wider and is set lower than the former 3-Series

equivalent 335. It's one sexy sports coupe.

The interior styling has the classic BMW look with soft touch leather throughout the front cabin. Front cabin seating is extremely comfortable. In the rare case that someone actually sits in the back, there would be ample leg room and

space. That's also assuming that the person is shorter than my 5'8" frame.

I really didn't want to give this car back to BMW after my one-week road test. I'm truly going to miss my seatbelt butler too. Upon closing the door, a retractable arm pushes the seatbelt forward for easy reach. After buckling up, the arm retracts. I joked with several passengers on it's nickname. "Seatbelt Butler" was the favourite.

Now let's see how much money I'm going to ask from my banker. Base MSRP is $56,600. Throw in the $4,900 Premium Package which includes rear view camera, active LED headlights, park assist, XM Satellite and an

upgraded Harman/Kardon sound system. Add the $2,500 Executive

Package and $850 Connected Drive Package, the price as tested is $63,850.

The Canonization of Sts. John XXIII and John Paul II

On April 27, 2014, the Divine Mercy Sunday, two recent but most

deserving popes, John XXIII and John Paul II, were canonized by Pope Francis in front of almost a million enthusiastic spectators which included retired Pope Benedict XVI and numerous dignitaries from around the world. In his homily during mass at St. Peter’s Square, Pope Francis praised the new saints as “men of courage and mercy who worked with the Holy Spirit in renewing and updating the church in keeping the features brought to her over the centuries.”

This was a most astonishing occasion not merely because two popes were canonized in the presence of two other popes but because of the haste and urgency to get the canonization done. Sainthood has often taken decades if not centuries to achieve partly because of the difficulty to confirm the basic requirement of two attributed miracles.

In St. John XXIII’s case, the second miracle was waived in light of his tremendous accomplishment of the Vatican II. In St John Paul II’s case, the waiting period after a candidate’s demise was waived and the process of canonization was expedited.

Pope Francis praised St. John XXIII for “his openness to the

Holy Spirit” and allowing himself to be led as a “pastor, servant-leader” in this task.

Vatican II opened the Church to modern times and also reached back to biblical times by stressing the central role of the Sacred Scripture in our devotion. Bible study continues to be part of the activities of priest and parishioners.

St. John XXIII, through the Second Vatican Council, has modernized our Church and brought it closer to us. We feel part and parcel of the Church. With the priest facing us and speaking our vernacular, we feel we belong to the same family. Our Church is a church of love and respect and is quite inclusive. So much so that we do not hesitate to serve in the Eucharist and the liturgy in any way we can.

It is believed that Pope John XXIII saved the world from nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. With the United States under President John F. Kennedy ready to blockade the Soviet Union from bringing nuclear missiles to Cuba, the pope made an impassioned plea over the Vatican Radio: "We beg all rulers not to be deaf to the cry of humanity." This allowed Nikita Krushchev to back down and call back the Soviet fleet without disgrace. For his efforts and call for world peace, Time

magazine named Pope John XXIII as “Man of the Year.”

Pope Francis praised and characterized St. John Paul II as “the pope of the family” and invoked the guidance of the new saints in the upcoming synods of the bishops on the family in October this year and in 2015.

Pope John Paul II had one of the longer and more successful papacy (1978-2005). He had involved himself in international affairs and had probably travelled the most to other countries. He went further than Pope John XXIII in bridging the gaps between the church and the other faiths, namely Judaism, the Church of England, the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Protestant Churches and even the Dalai Lama. It is believed that he played a behind-the-scene part in bringing down communism. In 2004, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush for his “principled stand for peace and freedom”.

The choice of holding the canonization on Divine Mercy Sunday was meaningful especially for St John Paul II who instituted the observance in the Catholic universal calendar. In the year 2000 at the Mass for the canonization of St. Faustina Kowalska, he proclaimed the second Sunday after Easter as the Divine Mercy Sunday. St. Faustina, coming from a poor Polish family, was a sister of the Congregation of Sisters of our Lady of Mercy. She claimed to have been visited by Jesus. By some coincidence, Pope John Paul II passed away in 2005 on the vigil of the Feast of Divine Mercy. As well, he was beatified in 2011 on Divine Mercy Sunday.

We have two great Church leaders in Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II and they richly deserved to be canonized.

Rarely do we have a Filipino-produced concert of local Filipino-Canadian

bands in Winnipeg, so the recent production Pinoy Rock Fest held on May 24 at Jimel’s International Cuisine was indeed a very helpful event for the local Filipino-rooted bands. The concert featured 10 bands, each of which dished out their set of engaging songs—some covers, some originals.

Bands that performed included Traffic Jam, Impact-2, Chichay, Fhamathou, haLf man haLf eLf, The 12/21, Immortal Sacrament, and Brownfire Movement. Attendance was moderate, but those who were there seemed to have enjoyed the evening of good live music.

The Filipino music scene in Winnipeg has been on the groove

for more than a decade now. Let’s continue supporting our local bands, a number of which have started to up the standard by recording and releasing original materials. Still a long way to go in terms of a Juno involvement, but it would just be a matter of time, patience, perseverance, community support, and belief in original music.

Oman, the "Land of 1,000 Forts, Towers and Castles"

Where in the world can a friendly traffic cop write you a ticket for driving

a dirty car? Only in Muscat, the capital city of Oman in the Middle East. Believe it or not, in Oman, officially called the Sultanate of Oman, it is illegal to drive around the city in a dirty car. The fine is OMR10 - 28.32 CAD (1 Canadian dollar = 0.35 Oman rial or 1 OMR = 2.83175 CAD $). The predominantly Arab country is famous for its law requiring drivers to keep their vehicles clean. Oman is not what we expect of an another Arab country - aside from being clean with no rubbish on the roadside. Although it is still a little-visited country, Oman, rich in natural and cultural heritage, is the best-kept secret gem of the Middle East.

Tucked away on the southeastern tip of the Arabian peninsula, Oman, with an area of 212,460 sq. kms. and a population of 4,013,391 (2014 - there are about 46,000 Filipino expatriates), is bordered by the countries of United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Yemen and shares marine border with Iran and Pakistan. Occupying a strategic location at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, the Sultanate's landscape of desolate mountains (the rocky Al Hajar), vast swathes of arid deserts and the sea sits it apart from the current turbulence in the neighbouring region.

One of the most peaceful and cleanest countries on earth, Oman has blossomed into a modern state with traditional values along with its stable government and progressive economy dependent on oil and gas resources, agriculture, manufacturing, substantial trade, and the rapidly expanding tourism industry since the reigning unitary Islamic absolute monarch, Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said, came to power after overthrowing his father in a palace coup in 1970.

Through our knowledgeable travel guide, Abdul, we're able to capture the best of the sights and sound of the city of Muscat on a warm but pleasant February day. Wearing the traditional long-sleeved ankle-length collarless white gown called "disdasha" and the head gear called "muzzar" (fabric folded into a turban), Abdul is a typical Omani, friendly, always with a smile, and

speaks good English. Abdul like any Omani will tell you with pride that the legendary "Sinbad, the Sailor" of the famous Arabian Nights is of Omani origin, supposedly born in Sohar, the ancient capital of Oman. The only thing missing in him is the curved dagger called the "Khangar" (reminiscent of the Batangas, Philippines "balisong"). In Oman, the "khangar" is a distinguishing feature of the mens' personality and symbol of male elegance traditionally worn at the waist when wearing formal attire.

Must-sees are the thousand forts, towers and castles of Oman. We're able to see the capital's most prominent landmarks built in the 16th century AD, the forts of "Al Mirani" and "Al Jalali", standing sentinels at the entrance of the Muscat Bay used to be defensive bastions and look-out points for potential invading enemies.

The treasures of Omani's heritage and cultural history can be discovered at the private "Al Zubair" museum - boasting extensive collection of ancient weapons, household equipment and owner's private collection of costumes and artefacts.

In the heart of the capital stands the stunning "Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque", the only mosque in the country that is open to non-Muslims. The dome and main minaret along with the 4 flanking minarets and the 35 Swarovski crystal chanderliers are the mosque's main outstanding features. Of contemporary Islamic architecture the mosque can accommodate a total capacity of 20,000 worshippers at a time. As a visitor you are required to dress appropriately - no shorts or uncovered arms. Women are required to cover their heads and remove their shoes before entering the prayer hall.

Although not allowed inside the Palace of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos, "The Alam" (means "The Flag" in Arabic), with its facade of gold and blue, we walk around to take some photos at the forecourt area. Built in the style of classic Arabic artistry, the palace evidently shows that Oman is the only oil nation so attached to traditional architecture that it forbids the construction of buildings higher than ten stories to ensure that the city's mountain

backdrop is never overshadowed by man-made structure and that all buildings must be painted white or an approved pastel colour.

You must see one of the oldest markets in Oman, "Muttrah Souq" in the port district of Muttrah with its corniche and horse-shoe shaped harbour. The souq with its aromatic smells of frankincense, spices and Arabian perfume is known for its handicrafts like silverware, daggers, traditional cloths, shoes in addition to the famous Omani sweets called "halwa" (popular sweet basically-cooked raw sugar with nuts traditionally served with the Omani coffee called "kahwa").

Spousal Sponsorship Residency Rules: The Double-Edged Sword

When submitting an application to sponsor your spouse to come to

Canada, there are specific conditions that must be met. If the sponsor

is a Canadian permanent resident rather than a Canadian citizen, it is necessary for the sponsor to reside in Canada. As with all spousal sponsorship applications, that

individual must also establish that their relationship with their spouse is genuine and not primarily for the purpose of immigration. How, then, is that individual expected to be able to maintain their residency requirement within Canada, but also have a genuine relationship with the spouse who resides abroad? In the case of Iao v. Canada (Citizenship and Immigration), the consequences of spending too much time outside of Canada are evident.

Ms Iao, who was granted Canadian permanent residency in 1997, had married her third husband in China and subsequently applied to sponsor him and his children to Canada in 2010. In 2011, her application to sponsor was refused on the basis that Ms Iao did not meet the residency requirements in order to qualify as a sponsor.

Under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations, a Canadian permanent resident who wishes to sponsor their spouse to come to Canada must reside in Canada from the date of their application until the date of the decision on the application. When assessing whether a sponsor resides in Canada, the court indicated that immigration officers can look at the following questions:1.Was the individual physically present in Canada for a long period prior to recent absences, which occurred immediately before or during the application to sponsor the applicant for a permanent resident visa?2.What is the extent of the appellant’s physical absences?3. Where are the appellant’s immediate family and dependents?4.Does the pattern of physical presence in Canada indicate a returning home or merely visiting the country? and

5.What is the quality of the connection with Canada: Is it more substantial than that which exists with any other country?

In this case, the Immigration Officer said that Ms Iao failed to prove that she had met the residency requirement. She appealed the Officer’s decision on the basis that she was spending time outside of Canada in order to be with her husband, and that she believed that the immigration Officer applied the wrong legal test when making the refusal decision. According to Ms Iao, she spent eight months of the year in Canada, and only four months out of the year in China with her husband and family.

The information provided to Citizenship and Immigration Canada by her husband told a different tale, however. According to her husband, Ms Iao was spending the majority of her time in China with him.

Ms Iao said she was residing in Canada because she had a valid permanent resident card; she had filed her Canadian income taxes, and had a daughter from a previous marriage living in Vancouver . The Immigration Appeal Division found that there were discrepancies between the evidence provided by Ms Iao, and the evidence supplied to the visa Officer. Based on the information from her husband, Ms Iao had spent 74% of her time outside of Canada between the date the application was filed and when a decision was made.

The Immigration Appeal Division also found that while Ms Iao’s had a daughter living in Canada, the rest of her immediate family (including her husband), was residing in China. The Court found that it was not unreasonable to assume that Ms Iao would be spending more time in China to be with the majority of her family, as opposed to being in Canada

with only one of her children, especially since the daughter in Canada was residing with her father – one of Ms Iao’s ex-husbands.

As a result, the Immigration Appeal Division concluded that Ms Iao’s ties to China were significantly stronger than her ties to Canada.

Permanent residents who want to spend time abroad to be with their spouse during the immigration application process should beware. If you spend too much time abroad, the sponsorship application may be refused.

On the other hand, immigration officers also want to see evidence of couples being together to prove the relationship is genuine. There lies the “catch-22”; the sponsor is required to reside in Canada during the processing of their application, yet they are also supposed to be able to prove that they are truly in love with the spouse they are sponsoring, who happens to reside outside of Canada.
