Association of Ilocanos in Manitoba's 5th mission in the Philippines

Armed with Ph400,000 pesos, the officers of the Association of Ilocanos

in Manitoba (AIM) will be leaving for the Philippines for their 5th mission this coming February.

Led by the president, Romy Uminga, the other officers include his wife, Che Uminga; Mario Rosario, the immediate past

president; and his wife, Myra, 1st vice-president of the association; and Danny Amoyo. 2nd vice-president; and Remy Amoyo, treasurer. The group will do the mission in Vigan Ilocos Norte; Cebu, Nueva Ecija and Batangas.

Winnipeg colder than Mars?I don’t think so!

Is winter over yet? I hope not! We still have a lot of fun winter adventures ahead! If you think

I’m complaining, I’m not. While it might get a bit uncomfortably numb in relative temperatures of minus 40-50 with the windchill,

the amount of people talking about the weather on social media is a bit overwhelming. We live in Winnipeg and cold winters is what makes us a hardy bunch.

Winnipeg went into deep freeze on New Year’s Eve. So

cold in fact that Time Magazine compared Winnipeg to Mar’s barren alien wasteland. On New Year’s Eve, the Mars Curiousity Rover recorded a maximum temperature of -29ºC. The daytime high on New Year’s Eve was a mere -31ºC and factor in the windchill, the temperature was between -40ºC to -50ºC. Yup, that’s cold. And for the uninitiated, exposed skin can freeze in 5 minutes. So is Winnipeg now famous than Mars? Probably not but travelling to Winnipeg is a lot closer than Mars. To keep things in perspective, according to Wikipedia, the average temperature on Mars is -55ºC and well below -150ºC at the poles.

For those new immigrants that are experiencing the cold bite of Mother Nature, I’m truly sorry and welcome to Manitoba winters. In fact, our winters are fantastic and as long as you dress for the weather, it doesn’t matter what the windchill is. There are many outdoor activities we can all enjoy during the winter. Festival du Voyageur is right around the corner and if you’re looking at taking up a new winter sport, I might suggest visiting the Windsor Park Nordic Centre and learn how to cross country ski.

Residents in P166M church land condemn Church contractby Jerome VillanuevaUniversity of Santo Tomas Journalism program

The residents of Barangay Ligas here have lambasted the land sale contract set by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Malolos to transfer the land ownership of a P166 million church land to its natives.

Samahan ng mga Maralitang Naninirahan sa Lupang Capellan (SMNLC), a group representing the occupants of Ligas residing on the church land, said the contract created by Malolos Resources Bulacan Corporation (MBRC) is “inhumane, unjust and ungodly”. MBRC is a stock corporation organized by the Malolos Diocese to negotiate with the residents.

SMNLC alleges that MBRC obliged the residents to pay the real taxes, transfer fees, register of deeds fees and lawyer fees, all of which run contrary to the conditions set by the Housing and Land Use Regulatory Board (HLURB) in its selling license.

In a selling license document dated June 15, 1998, HLURB obliged the owner to pay the real estate tax after the title is transferred to the buyer.

SMNLC also questioned sections 7 and 8 of the land sale contract which state that a resident who failed to pay the balance in three consecutive months over a five-year payment scheme “shall leave voluntarily” the land being acquired, and the entire amount previously paid to MBRC, shall be considered as a rent.

SMNLC President Danilo Camua said the previous agreement with MBRC President Fr. Elmer Ignacio should be followed that after paying for five years a resident has the right to renew the contract according to the resident’s discretion of a five, ten, fifteen and twenty year scheme of balance payment.

“Kaya doon sa usapan namin na pagkatapos nga ng limang taon ay meron pang ibibigay sila na pwedeng i-renew yung natitirang balance sa lima, sampu, labing-lima at dalawampung taon ayon sa kagustuhan sa nakaposisyon dun sa lupa. Kaya nga lang dun sa kontrata ay hindi nakalagay yun. Malinaw na nakalagay dun na makipag-ugnayan sa loob ng anim na buwan at kung hindi mababayaran yung natitirang balance, i-compute sa pagkakatira mo sa lupang kinatitirikan ng iyong bahay bilang upa. Kung mananatili ka pa dun sa bahay mong tinutuluyan ay uupa ka pa ng dalawang libo buwan-buwan at may pagtaas pa ng sampung porsyento taon-taon,” Camua said.

Camua insisted that MBRC President Fr. Ignacio is “inconsistent with his promises” that he will consider the residents’ plea.

“Noong dumating na yung pangalawang pakikipagharap namin, lahat nung sampung kahilingan namin ay wala man lang kahit isang nasunod kundi

lamang yung five years, zero interest lang ang nakuha namin,” he added.

In the letter sent to Fr. Ignacio last February 2013, SMNLC made 10 requests, including the lowering of the land price, standardizing classification, basis and measurement of land lots, shouldering of taxes, granting discounts and incentives to consistent payers, and donating of a playground and barangay outpost lot.

Meanwhile, Malolos City Mayor Christian Natividad asked for the leniency and flexibility of the contract set by MBRC under the Malolos Diocese.

“Payag naman ako dun [sa pagbabayad ng mga residente sa Simbahan], pero dun sa terms na parang pribado ang kausap [at hindi na] Simbahan baka [dapat may] konting leniency, konting flexibility at konting paramdam na we are dealing with the Church na meron silang vow of poverty, vow na makatao,” Natividad said.

Natividad added the Malolos Diocese had already donated the 3.59-ha. road lots in compliance with Presidential Decree No. 957. But the city mayor clarified that there is no formal turn-over “yet”.

Camua said he is hopeful that the century-old land conflict will be resolved and the next generation would not inherit the same problem.

The 20.2-ha. of land in conflict was originally an

agricultural land owned by the Tiongsons of Malolos, and the natives were the tenants of the farm land. The Tiongsons donated the agricultural land to the Archbishop of Manila during the early 1900s as a support to the expenses of the seminarians.

In 1972, President Ferdinand Marcos issued Presidential Decree No. 27 that led to the transfer of ownership of the land to the farmers of Ligas. But not all lands were transferred because some of the lands are non-rice lands. During the 1990s, the Archdiocese of Manila converted the remaining non-rice agricultural land into residential lands without the notifying the occupants.

The Manila Archdiocese transferred the ownership of the 20.2 hectare land with an Original Certificate of Title No. 551 to the Malolos Diocese last January 24, 2006.

Also in that year, the Malolos Diocese organized MBRC, a stock organization that has the power to sell and negotiate on the “friar lands” including the 108 residential lots of Ligas that comes from the mother title no. 551.

In November 2012, SMNLC was organized to represent and negotiate with MBRC headed by Danilo Camua.

Malolos Diocese Bishop Jose Oliveros, MBRC Chair Msgr. Andres Valera, Malolos Diocese Property Custodian Leonardo Castro and MBRC Operations Officer Michelle Bernardo declined to be interviewed.

As of press time, MBRC Pres. Elmer Ignacio has no reply with the reporter’s interview request.

Merry Christmas, I’m Off to Work Today! But I Ain’t No Hero(On the Deromanticization of Service-Oriented Jobs)

Kelangan mo bang pumasok sa trabaho kahit na Pasko? Wag kang mag-alala—hindi ka nag-iisa. At isa pa, ginusto mo ang trabahong ’yan, kaya wag mong isiping isa kang bayani dahil nagtatrabaho ka at naglilingkod sa iba imbes na nagpapakasaya ka kasama ang iyong mga mahal sa buhay. Tutal e ikaw rin naman at ang iyong pamilya ang unang nakikinabang sa sweldong kinikita mo sa iyong trabaho.

While many people are enjoying their time off work during holidays

such as Christmas day or the entire Christmas week, there are also many who need to go to their respective jobs. There are basically two reasons for this—for some, out of responsibility, and for others, out of necessity. There should be neither surprising nor embarrassing about this; and there is nothing heroic about it either. After all, any kind of job is basically self-serving—be it a soldier, a physician, a nurse, a police officer, a writer, a food server, a news reporter, a weather forecaster, a teacher, a security guard, a miner, an astronaut, or an overseas worker. It is the individual’s choice based on his educational background, skills, interests, or necessity or on whatever is in demand or available.

Doctors and nurses save lives—yes. Teachers educate students—yes. Soldiers, police officers, and security guards protect communities and properties—yes. Maintenance workers clean establishments and the environment—yes. But, all

these workers are compensated accordingly. And all go to work primarily to earn money to pay for their cost of living and to support or help their respective families. Therefore, whatever job a person has—even if it is in the health-care field, religious-related, services-oriented, or government-funded—he is working basically to satisfy his interests and to meet his personal needs. True heroism doesn’t really exist. Hailing particular workers as heroes is for the most part only an attempt to stroke the back of the diligent worker so he works harder. There is really nothing heroic in any kind of jobs.Out of Responsibility and the Nature of the Job

We usually hear quips or jokes from others that say some have to work on holidays because they needed extra money. While this might be true for some people, it does not apply to everyone. Some people go to work even on holidays because of responsibility; work schedules are often definite or rigid. For example, those like me who work at hospitals, where people-oriented services are continuous, have definite work schedules; so, if some special occasions fall on workdays and we couldn’t file for a vacation for whatever reason or we don’t have coworkers who could exchange shifts with us, we have no choice but to work on those days. Out of Choice or Necessity

For others, going to work on holidays is a choice. Even if they are supposed to be off, but because they wanted to earn additional money on top of their

usual salaries, they choose to pick up extra shifts. And there’s nothing wrong about this either. After all, perhaps everyone needs extra money, and one will work for this even if it meant missing an occasion, which he could catch up for with his loved ones anyway on another day. In the end, it’s usually a matter of time management—having the sense of decision on working extra on holidays (when pays are higher and incentives are available) versus taking extra hours off on ordinary days. The next time it’s a holiday and you’re not working because you’re off, don’t think that everyone is spending his time at home or anywhere else and enjoying the holidays the way you do. Remember that services and activities are continuous 24 hours a day at people-oriented workplaces like hospitals, restaurants, and police stations. And workers go to work either because they are scheduled to do so or because they picked up extra shifts for additional earnings. No worker is a hero; after all, everyone is compensated for a job done.

Accompanied by four teddy bears and a legion of friends and volunteers, Karen Lizon wrapped and handed out 1097 gifts to unsuspecting children and families during a cold Sunday morning before Christmas. The big surprise was finally revealled today at the 2013 Manitoba Filipino Street Festival! The massive 30’x60’ Philippine national flag was unfurled during the final performance of the festival’s morning ceremonies!

The flag is 30’ x 60’ and according to Sen. Enverga, is the largest Philippine flag in Canada. It eclipses a slightly smaller flag from Toronto that measures 30’ x 50’. - September 5-20, 2013

‘Norte’ tops Cinemanila international filmfest

According to festival director Tikoy Aguiluz, the screening of Lav Diaz’s four-hour epic “Norte, Hangganan ng Kasayasayan” was an SRO (standing room only) affair.

The fall of a TitanAfter half-century of

political life, erstwhile Senate President Juan

Ponce Enrile stepped down from the pinnacle of power in June 2013, a role that he had performed with calculated planning and precise execution. His adroit balancing act during the impeachment trial of then-Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona was the epitome of his political career.

Enrile began his public life as then-Senate President Ferdinand E. Marcos’ personal lawyer in 1964. When Marcos was elected President in 1965, he appointed Enrile – who had become part of his inner circle – in various capacities: Undersecretary/Acting Secretary of Finance, Acting Insurance Commissioner, Commissioner of the Bureau of Customs, Secretary of the

Ministry of Justice, Secretary of the Department of National Defense.

In 1971, he resigned as National Defense Secretary, after serving for only a year, to run for a Senate seat. He lost in his first electoral try. Marcos re-appointed him as National Defense Secretary in 1972.

On September 21, 1972, Enrile survived an alleged assassination by communist insurgents as he was riding in his car. Marcos declared martial law citing the ambush attack on Enrile. In 1973, Enrile became Minister of Defense under a modified parliamentary system, one of the most -- if not the most -- powerful positions under the Marcos martial rule. Martial Law

As one of the 12 architects of martial law, Marcos presented Enrile and the others with a gold Rolex watch each. Hence, they came to be known as the “Rolex 12.” Enrile’s role was crucial because as it turned out the ambush on him was a fake. It was stage-managed to give Marcos a justification to declare martial law.

The turning point in Enrile’s relationship with Marcos came in the early 1980s when Marcos changed the chain of command in the armed forces. Enrile was no longer in the loop! The new chain of command was from Marcos, as the Commander-in-Chief, straight to the Chief of Staff, Gen. Fabian Ver, who was a cousin of Marcos. Enrile swallowed his pride and stayed on as a powerless Defense Secretary.

After Sen. Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. was assassinated on August 21, 1983, Enrile made his move: he secretly aligned himself with the Reform the Armed Forces Movement (RAM), which was headed then by his Aide-de-Camp Lt. Col. Gregorio “Gringo” Honasan.

In February 1986, Enrile with support from RAM and the “Cagayan 300,” a shadowy militia – or private army -- purportedly organized by Enrile, launched a coup d’état against Marcos. It was also rumored that Enrile got the support of the CIA (Source: “The Gold Warrior” by Sterling Seagrave)

However, the day before the launching of the coup d’état, Ver discovered the plot and alerted Marcos. Marcos ordered the arrest of Enrile and then-Armed Forces Vice Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Fidel V. Ramos who was also a cousin of Marcos and also one of the “Rolex 12.” Enrile, Ramos, and their supporters barricaded themselves at Fort Aguinaldo. When word went out that a revolt was in progress, the people rallied around them, which sparked a popular citizens’ revolt that came to be known as the People Power Revolution. Enrile and Ramos were acknowledged as heroes of the revolution.

But fate wasn’t so kind to Enrile. For the second time, the presidency eluded him. Ninoy’s widow, Cory Aquino, was swept to the top by the masa. Enrile settled for the same post that he

held under Marcos, Secretary of Defense. But he didn’t stay too long. He was forced to resign in November 1986 after a few months on the job. Cory probably thought that if Enrile rebelled against Marcos, he could do the same to her. Ramos took over the Defense post.

Since then Marcos loyalists and Honasan’s “RAM boys” who were unhappy with Cory’s leadership launched six successive coup d’états. Due to Enrile’s closeness to Honasan, he was believed to have supported the failed rebellions. Political moves

In 1987, Enrile ran and won a Senate seat. In 1992, he ran and won a congressional seat representing his bailiwick, the First District of Cagayan. In 1995, he entered the Senate race again and won a seat as an Independent.

In 1998, he tried to reach the presidency for the third time. He ran as an independent candidate against then-Vice President Joseph “Erap” Estrada. But Erap was unbeatable.

During the impeachment trial of Erap in 2001, Enrile was one of those who voted against opening the controversial “second bank envelope.” That vote triggered the Second EDSA People Power Revolution that ousted Erap.

In May 2001, Enrile ran for reelection to his Senate seat and lost. In 2004, he made a comeback and regained his old Senate seat. In 2008, he was elected by his peers to serve as Senate President. He was reelected in 2010.

In 2012, he reached the high mark of his political life when he presided over the Senate impeachment trial of then-Chief Justice Renato Corona. He led a group of seven senators who pledged to vote as one bloc. The group met on the night before the judgment day to decide for acquittal or conviction. Enrile presided over the group discussion and he advocated for conviction to which the group concurred.

Had the group voted for acquittal, Corona would have been absolved of the charges. Once again, Enrile took a step to change the course of Philippine history.

In an attempt to keep a Senate seat for the Enrile family, his only

son, then-Rep. Jack Enrile, ran for the Senate in 2013. He was ahead in the polls initially but his ratings fell down after stories of his involvement in the shooting deaths of several individuals surfaced in the news and social media. He lost the election.Miriam’s bombshell

On December 4, 2013, Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago delivered a privilege speech attacking Enrile for a variety of crimes including plunder, illegal gambling, illegal logging, and illegal importation at the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA). Miriam also accused Enrile of masterminding the pork barrel scam.

In her speech, she requested Justice Secretary Leila de Lima to investigate the thousands of deaths and forced disappearances during the Martial Law era wherein Enrile served as Defense Minister from 1972 to 1986.

Within days of Miriam’s scathing attack against Enrile, the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) formed a seven-member special joint task force to investigate Miriam’s allegations against Enrile.Reflections

Enrile finally reached the end of the road. But the question remains: Is he going to beat the rap? If not, he’d probably end up in a kubol (cottage) for the rich on the grounds of the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinglupa City. However, if he beats the rap, he’d probably spend the rest of his life in the comfort of a white mansion on an idyllic island off the coast of Cagayan, his birthplace.

Indeed, life has been good to Enrile who was supposedly born out of wedlock to a poor woman fathered by renowned and married lawyer. Reunited with his father in his early years, he pursued a career in law, which opened a lot of doors to the corridor of power. He occupied high positions in government but the one that he wanted most – the presidency -- eluded him.

But whatever fate bestows upon him at the sunset of his long and colorful life, he can reflect and say, “It was good; not bad at all.” Indeed.

The 2014 edition of the book listed the Philippines at the 10th place, citing natural places which include the islands of Boracay; the limestone islands El Nido in Palawan, the coasts of Coron that hides beautiful beaches and pristine mountain lakes, and Puerto Gallera. The Rough Guides has also recommended a visit to Chocolate Hills in Bohol including the tiny primate Tarsiers in the region.

Other places recommended are the perfectly-coned Mt. Mayon, mountain lakes in Mt. Pinatubo, and the crystal-clear waters of Apo Reef Marine Natural Park in Mindoro for scuba divers. Visitors to the country are also advised to see the Ati-Atihan Festival on Panay and to savor a tall glass of Halo-halo.

Completing the Top 10 countries in the list to visit in 2014 are Georgia in Central Asia, Turkey, Macedonia, Japan, Rwarna, Ethiopia, Brazil, Bulgaria and Madagascar.

My RideMore cars, more tech and more driving in 2014

It's the start of the new year and when it comes to the auto industry, in a few weeks, I'll

be seeing the future when auto manufacturers announce their 2015 line of vehicles at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit.

Being a year older and a bit wiser, I have a game plan for the Detroit Auto Show. Last year's trial by fire was overwhelming. My game plan is to focus on the cars, trucks, mini-vans and SUVs that will make it to the streets of Winnipeg. I might still ogle at the Bentley, Porsche and Masaratis.

The amount of technology that goes into a vehicle is downright mind boggling. Everything in cars today is controlled or monitored by computers. Reading up on the technological advancements in the media fleet vehicles can easily dominate the weekly car review process. At the end of the day, sometimes the only thing consumers want to know is that by pressing a green "ECO" button saves them fuel and money.

The 2014 International Consumer Electronics Show

(CES) opened in Las Vegas earlier this year and prior to publishing, we're already seeing automotive related technology announcements. As CES 2014 draws to a close in Las Vegas, I'll be in Detroit so see where all that technology fits into the production cars we will see later this year.

There are so many advancements and amazingly cool technology announcements in the auto industry. Take for example, the newly announced Samsung Galaxy Gear with BMW i Remote App. It might be the closest thing to driving our cars like James Bond with our watch. It almost makes me want to buy a BMW i3 and hope the dealer throws in the watch as a bonus!

For several years now we have been going places with our passports and

visas. For a change especially this winter let's get rid of them and use our Manitoba driver licenses instead! At this time we won't be crossing boundaries and international datelines because we're heading to Manitoba's ultimate winter destination, the Asessippi Ski Area and Winter Park, a four-hour drive from Winnipeg city centre. We're not escaping winter, we're embracing it!

From the city take the Trans-Canada highway west to Portage La Prarie and then head north to Neepawa, continue to the town of Russell where you follow the sign to Asessippi about ten minutes away on highway #83. Your GPS won't lead you to a mountain as you might expect because the ski resort is nestled deep in a valley, the Shell Valley, located between the towns of Russell and Roblin.

The largest in the province, the family-friendly Asessippi Ski Resort with 25 downhill runs and 552 meters (1,810 ft.) of vertical is a great place to relax and enjoy downhill skiing, snowboarding and snow-tubing. It is the only ski resort in our province to be certified to hold international slalom competition.

Alpine skiing has been a recreational activity for our

whole family from grandkids to grandparents since 1980 when we begin to learn the sport with rented equipment at Springhill Winter Park just a few minutes from downtown Winnipeg. A family that skis together stays together!

Like any other ski resort Asessippi offers terrains for all abilities or skill levels. The green circle trails, with gentle slopes which are generally wide and groomed, are the easiest; blue square trails with intermediate difficulty slopes, usually groomed and steeper than beginner's trails, are for intermediate skiers; and black diamond trails, most difficult, steep and narrow, may not be groomed, are difficult slopes for advanced skiers.

The outdoor facilities of Asessippi include one quad chairlift (4 skiers) named Squirrel Chair and two triple chairlifts, carpet tow in beginner's area called bunny hill, and three "Laugh 'til you cry" downhill snow-tubing runs. Lift hours open at 9 am and closes at 4:30 pm. Night skiing and snowboarding are also available. With its snow-making equipment you're guaranted snow from the river water down below the hills.

Southeast Manitoba Filipino Association celebrates family ChristmasMore community plans for 2014...

The events in 2013 defined the community involvement of the

Southeast Manitoba Filipino Association especially the fund raising efforts for the Haiyan typhoon victims when the association raised more than $1,200 and sent 40 boxes of groceries, toys, used clothes for men, women and children thru UMAC Cargo Express. Furthermore, the association has a very successful basketball tournaments when Solomon Furniture team was the champion.

"We want to involve the members of the Filipino community in Steinbach and neighobring cities in the civic and community affairs," said Cesar Valdez, president of SEMFA."Filipinos are growing in this city and we have to be a part of the community growth, we cannot be isolated from the mainstream."

Last December family Christmas party was attended by many Filipino families and their Canadian friends especially Kelvin Goertzen, member of the Manitoba legislative assembly; and Ted Falk, the newly elected member of the Parliament. UMAC Express Cargo owners and managers, Gary and Aida Montierro, graced the events.

Winter activities are being planned for the Filipino community for January, like the ladies volleyball exhibitions and other indoor games.

"We have committees working on the various events for this coming spring and summer

festivals. Steinbach residents have been looking forward for the Filipino participations in the 3rd week of June, Summer in the City; heritage and pioneer days cultural events," Valdez said with genuine enthusiasm.

Winnipeg Jets Report

The Winnipeg Jets ended 2013 on a high note with a backup goalie emerging

as a possible starter but the start of a new year showed the same old team that many have been frustratingly accustomed to.

After suffering a 6-4 setback at home to the Dallas Stars, the Winnipeg Jets embarked on a mini two game road trip which saw them take on the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Buffalo Sabres. Evander Kane scored a goal and an assist to boost the Jets over the Blue Jackets 3-2. A few nights later, the Jets gave up three goals in the third period to the last place Sabres and lose 4-2. Mark Scheifele scored both Jets goals.

The Jets returned home before playing two more on the road welcoming the Florida Panthers. Michael Frolik helped tame the Panthers by recording a goal and an assist in a 5-2 victory.

Vancouver and Edmonton welcomed Winnipeg on a two game west coast road trip but the Jets came out empty handed. The Canucks edged 2-1 the Jets as former Manitoba Moose goalie Eddie Lack stopped 15 shots in the win. One night later, the Edmonton Oilers took advantage of a fatigued Winnipeg team handing them an embarassing 6-2 loss. Taylor Hall had a goal and two assists for the Oil in a fight filled contest.

Claude Noel found a glimpse of hope in backup netminder Al Montoya as they returned back home to take on the Minnesota Wild. The Wild scored three goals on six shots against Ondrej Pavelec and coach Noel quickly

went to Montoya. Blake Wheeler scored twice to rally behind their backup goalie in a 6-4 win.

Wheeler continued his red-hot December scoring the overtime winner with two seconds left against the Colorado Avalanche. Montoya stopped 33 of 34 shots on the road to fuel the goalie controversy even more.

Montoya gave the Jets faithful more hope going into 2014. On New Year’s eve, Montoya shutout the Buffalo Sabres 3-0 giving the Jets three straight victories. Montoya stopped all 27 shots and the goalie was quick to credit his team.

“The team is doing a great job in front of me,” Montoya said. “We’re communicating well in the defensive zone and we’re putting together victories now.”

The Jets ended 2013 with a three game winning streak but took a step back in their first few games of 2014 on a three game road trip.

The Jets fell 4-3 to the Ottawa Senators in the nation’s capital. Montoya was back in net and stopped 25 shots.

Pavelec got the call against the Eastern Conference champion, Boston Bruins, but Torey Krug scored twice in the second period to power the Bruins to a 4-1 win.

The Jets went back to Montoya to try and get back into the win column against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Kane had two goals but the Jets were outgunned by the Penguins 6-5.

The Jets return to action at home against the Tampa Bay Lightning with a 19-21-5 record.

A Look at 2014 with MFBC President Jon Reyes2013 was yet another incredible year for the Manitoba Filipino Business Council, consisting of growth, new opportunities and strengthened ties in the community. MFBC President Jon Reyes shares his thoughts on the upcoming year and the future of the organization.

Q: Jon, tell us about your history with the MFBC.A: I decided to start the MFBC because my wife was part of a group called Women Business Owners of Manitoba (WBOM). It’s an organization made up of business owners and they held meetings once a month. There was a keynote speaker every meeting talking about marketing, human

resources, time management, etc. It was a great networking event and an opportunity to share trials and tribulations with other business owners. As you know, being in business isn’t easy - if it was, everyone would be in it.

I liked the idea of it, and thought to myself - why don’t we have one of these types of organizations in the Filipino community? I took it upon myself to get together with a bunch of other business owners, and we established the MFBC. Here we are, three years later, with two galas under our belt. I am very proud we were able to recognize business people and owners who are involved in our community.

People I look up to who have been very involved in the community include Larry Vickar - he’s always given back to the Filipino community, and has been instrumental in helping give me guidance on running the organization. I also have to thank RBC, as they’ve been supporting us as a key sponsor since the beginning. Holly Toupin always wanted this to be a win/win for both organization. We know our community is large and it’s great to partner with the largest financial institution in Canada.Q: What are some highlights from 2013 for the MFBC?A: In 2013, we had some really great speakers throughout the year. Our membership has also grown substantially without an aggressive membership campaign. Unofficially, we have just over 60 members, and it has tripled in size in year three. What we’ve done has attracted business owners and new members, and it helps to have the Filipino Journal as a media partner for exposure. Social media has also been a huge help - that’s a tool any smart business owner should use to get the word out.

Another highlight from this year is the trade mission. Our objective was to meet with people

in the public and private business sectors in the Philippines, and find opportunities for our members to do business overseas, should they choose to. We found out a lot about the Philippines - they call it the emerging tiger in the Asian economy. There are a lot of industries setting up offices in the Philippines as distribution centres for services and products in the ASEAN market, as Filipinos are known for their strong English skills and education. Some of our members are already taking advantage of these opportunities.

To top it all off, we signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Philippine Chamber of Commerce. It’s great to get recognition overseas, and our members can contact this organization when they travel to ask questions about doing business there.

Another great highlight was the 2nd Annual MFBC Awards Gala. It was a sold-out event, and

it’s nice to see business owners and leaders in our community getting recognized for their hard work and passion for entrepreneurialism.

Q: What’s in store for 2014?A: We now have people volunteering on various committees, and it’s made my job a lot easier as President because as the founder, you had to wear a lot of hats. Now there are people just as passionate as I am, who share the same vision and goals as I do, and want to see the MFBC grow. I have dedicated committee members who want to see the MFBC succeed as much as they want their own businesses to succeed.

For the next few months, we will be working with the Constitution Committee to formalize and finalize this document. We have legal representation helping us with this - it’s a document really important for the future of the MFBC, so we have a clear cut mandate, vision, and strategic plan moving forward.

We are also in the works of putting together a publication guide. We’re always getting questions from the Filipino community asking “how do I start

a business.” One of our goals is to get a guide out for people to use to answer questions like: should I get incorporated, what do I have to look at financially, and what kind of grants are out there for business owners.

Q: Where do you see the MFBC growing 5 or 10 years from now?A: Down the road, we’d like to see the MFBC have their own office. Eventually, the MFBC will become a Chamber of Commerce - but there are rules and regulations that come with that. Perhaps we’ll eventually have a paid Executive Director for the organization, because right now it’s run by volunteers - so the challenge will be sustaining what we currently have.

Q: Can you share a recent success story of an MFBC member?

A: We’re all successful and have benefited from the membership in many ways. Currently, one of our members - Darin Hoffman - is on his way back to the Philippines as part of the trade delegation. He’s benefitted from the trade mission and is setting up an office out there. Without this agreement, he wouldn’t of seen the international opportunities from a business standpoint. He’s not limiting himself to do just business here in Canada - he’s looking at other opportunities, like all business owners should.

Q: What are some benefits of being a member?

A: As a member, you have networking opportunities during our meetings. You develop relationships with other business owners, and there’s an educational benefit from listening to the guest speakers we bring in. We always try to get feedback from our members surrounding what topics they’d like to hear about as a business owner. Thanks to the relationships we’ve developed with other chambers in the city, we’ve been able to connect outside of the Filipino community.

We have about 70,000 Filipinos in our province, and that speaks volumes compared to 10 or 15 years ago. We now have a generation that’s very

entrepreneurial-minded. It’s not like the generation from our parents where they immigrated here, and nothing against what they’ve done, but they’ve come here to work, get benefits, and give their children opportunities to get further educated. We’re part of a generation that thinks differently - we’re into self-employment, and not being dependent on working for a private or public firm. Some people just want to get into business, and we want to be that resource to guide and help them.

Q: What are your plans beyond the MFBC?A: As a business owner, it’s in my blood to always look for other

business opportunities. Personally, I always want to work on my professional development. I like to be busy. I like to keep active. I am currently on the Board of The Kidney Foundation, which I enjoy greatly. I’m going into my tenth year as a football official, and that certainly keeps me busy. Obviously, I want to spend more time with my wife and kids.

After the MFBC, when that time comes, I would like to leave the organization when it’s stable with a strong foundation to remain sustainable. As the founder, I’ll always be involved and will continue to be passionate about being a Filipino Canadian and business owner. Giving back to the community is something I’ve always wanted to be involved in.

Q: Lastly, do you have any advice for business owners?A: When I started out, I used a resource called the Canada-Manitoba Business Service Centre. It was a great resource for me. The great thing about being a Filipino Canadian is that if you’re

a new immigrant here or thinking about going into business, there is an organization like the MFBC to help answer your questions. Many of our members are very helpful and can steer you in the right direction, and connect you to people you need to know - whether it’s for legal, accounting or marketing advice. We have a wealth of knowledge at the MFBC, so membership dollars go a long way - you basically get back what you paid for by ten folds by just connecting with key people in our organization.

I’m very excited for what 2014 has in store. I hope people who are interested in business come by to our events, and always stay tuned to our Facebook page, social media accounts and website.

in Samar, the four candidates for the Mrs. Phiippines Manitoba 2014 have accepted the challenge to be actively involved in the fund raising mandate of the Manitoba Council of Canadian Filipino Associations, Inc. (MaCCFA).

Introduced lately to the public in a very special way, the candidates include Zeny Calimlim, Mrs. OFSAM; Fely Paredes, Mrs. FILCASA; Gloria Magpali, Mrs. FIDWAM; and Precy Merluza, Mrs. QPAM.

"Proceeds to build a house is the reason why I joined this contest. My family commented that I am already old enough to join and when I told them the purpose, I got the green light. At least in a small way I can extend the hopes of our kababayans and increase their faiths towards other people that they are no alone", Magpali said with a smile.

Zeny Calimlim said with inspiring voice, "It is a great feeling to help the victims of typhoon Haiyan and it is not the winning which I aimed for this beauty but the winning hearts of

Fely Paredes, in her simple way said:”Being a candidate for Mrs. Philippines Manitoba 2014 is one of the best way to share the graces we have been receiving here in Winnipeg; and I am inspired how the people opened their hearts and wallets to help our kababayans, and by raising funds this way will become a very memorable for me, for we have helped those who need most."

Both Larry Vickar, CEO and president of Vickar Autogroup and MLA Melanie Wight commended the candidates for accepting the challenge; "I do highly commend

and congratulate these four ladies who accepted to take part in this humanitarian effort, and I do feel the good with your intentions to help the less fortunate Filipinos." Larry said during the event. Larry and his wife Tova together with the Transcona Rotarians have been involved in building houses in the Camiguin Islands, Philippines.

For Ms. Wight, MLA for Burrows, said: "I am moved by the ways these four lovely candidates expressed their willingness to open their hearts to help the victims of the super typhoon Haiyan by this event. I wish I could be a candidate, " Wight excitedly impressed when she addressed the event." And look at this beautiful set-up, very special, and I do congratulate the organizers, the candidates and the community, you're such amazing people."

This event is one of the mandates extended to help other people in the Philippines and in other countries by the officers and members of MaCCFA. MaCCFA and FCPTAM raised lately more than $50,000 for the Haiyan typhoon victims; and in the past years, both associations had raised more than $17,000 for Haiti earthquake victims. MaCCFA conducts a- year-round fund raising efforts for their HELPfund Calamity Fund.

"I know that Filipinos, especially in the Philippines and in some Filipino communities in Canada and the USA, are obsessed with many beauty pageants; but our Mrs. Philippines-Manitoba 2014, here in Winnipeg, is obsessed with charity," said Rod E. Cantiveros, president of MaCCFA. "With these lovely candidates who answered the call to help others, we, the officers,members and supporters of MaCCFA are totally inspired to work hard for more funds for the reconstruction projects in Samar," he added.
