The Manitoba Girls Football Association is the first of its kind in Western Canada.

The MGFA is dedicated to developing and fostering opportunities for girls to play football against girls. We are not competition for minor football in Manitoba, our leagues are played in the spring, this allows girls learn how to play, hone their skills and compete against each other, and if they so choose to compete in the youth leagues in the fall. It is a stand alone program that allows the girls that only want to play against other girls to do so, and still allows the girls that wish to play fall football to do so as well.

Fundraiser in Memory of Michael Alden Ruiz Lina

Hello Everyone,

Losing a child is one of the most difficult and challenging situation a parent could face. When we lost our son, Michael Alden Ruiz, last January 25, 2014, we were devastated. Despite the medical challenges he went through and his cognitive and physical delay,

Michael was a very happy and loving person, full of smile, laughter and hugs. We were blessed to have him for twenty three and a half years and there were numerous agencies and organizations which had assisted us with Michael’s special needs during those years. Organizing fundraising events for these organizations in his memory has helped us ease the pain, heal and move forward.

In 2014 we were able to raise $9244.69 for the PICU/PSCU Area at Children’s Hospital which purchased an Optiflow High Flow O2 Machine for PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit)and some TV, DVD players, portable DVD Players and toys for PSCU (Pediatric Special Care Unit) for long term ventilated pediatric patients. This year we have decided to support the Children’s

Rehabilitation Foundation because our son Michael was one of the many children who received equipment like modified wheelchair and attended the Sun and Fun Camp funded by the Children’s Rehabilitation Foundation.

Children's Rehabilitation Foundation is a local Manitoba charity that raises funds to purchase equipment and provide programs for children living with disabilities. These funds are used to provide resources such as specially modified bicycles, wheelchairs, walkers and ipads used for communication. To learn more about Children’s Rehabilitation Foundation please contact Adell Gauthier, Fund Development and Event Coordinator at (204) 258-6702 or [email protected].

This year, we will be holding our second Bud, Spud and Chicken

Fundraising Event in memory of Michael on Friday, July 15 at Canad Inns Garden City from 6 – 9 PM. Tickets are $ 15.00. We are currently looking for donations or contributions for our silent auction. All donations above $15 will receive a tax receipt, cheques should be made payable to Children’s Rehabilitation Foundation. You can also donate Online by using this link:h t t p s : / / s e c u re . e 2 r m . c o m /registrant/donate.aspx?eventid=198456&langpref=en=CA&Referrer=https%3a%2f%2fadmin.e2rm.com%2fEventSettings.aspx

Duterte’s Unorthodoxy: The New OrthodoxyWith no major political

organization behind him and no big donors

to fund his campaign, President Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte was propelled to power by people from all walks of life. He beat four other candidates, three of whom – Jejomar Binay, Mar Roxas, and Grace Poe -- were funded by executives of some of the country’s top companies, including San Miguel Corporation, Araneta Group, and Aboitiz Group. Shunned by the major newspaper outlets –

or was it an organized boycott? -- Duterte waged an intensive grassroots campaign and used the social media to reach out to the ordinary people.

He hammered in a promise to fight – nay, kill – the criminals and drug lords, and stop corruption in government. He vowed to restore the death penalty by hanging. And for drug lords, he’d hang them twice – once to kill them and the second time to severe their heads. And with his reputation as “The Punisher” during the two decades that he

was mayor of Davao City, no criminal would ever doubt that he was serious about his threats. And to make his point crystal clear, he appointed his most trusted police officer, Gen. Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, as the new Director General of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Dela Rosa, on his first day on the job, warned the policemen involved in illegal drugs that “they have 48 hours to surrender to him.” Indeed, Duterte couldn’t have chosen a better PNP Chief than Dela Rosa, who earned his moniker “Bato” – which means “Stone” – for what he is, a hardened cop who had served “The Punisher” well in fighting criminals. But calling him “Bato” would be kinder than what I’d call him – a pit bull… without a leash.

Digong and BatoIt did not then come as a

surprise when the drug lords put a P1-billion price on the heads of Digong (Duterte’s street moniker) and Bato. The bounty was offered by 20 imprisoned drug lords who’d pitch in P50 million each for their assassination.

But instead of cowering in fear from the jailed drug lords’ threat to assassinate them, Digong and Bato went on the offensive. To put an end to the corrupt culture inside the New Bilibid Prison, where the drug lords are given VIP privileges, Duterte ordered the replacement of the correctional officers with commandos from the PNP’s elite Special Action Force (SAF).Poverty and corruption

Duterte’s unorthodox ways and style have earned him the respect of the people, who have been waiting for a “messiah” to deliver them from the clutches of poverty and the evils of corruption. But election after election, pretenders and charlatans promised to eradicate poverty and stop corruption, only to make the lives of the common tao worse than before. But they saw in Duterte someone who is like them and thinks like them. He talks, looks, and walks like them; therefore, he must be like them… nay, he is them! It is an alchemy that created a harmonious relationship between the people and him. And, hopefully, that fusion would stand the test of time.

But Duterte doesn’t have too much time to deliver on his promises. He said he’d stop crime and corruption in six months. While that might sound quixotic – and it is in all honesty – his determination to put an end poverty and corruption gives the people a flicker of hope.

However, it is a challenge that ordinary politicians would fail the moment they take the helm of leadership. Indeed, a few days ago, Sen. Ping Lacson said that corruption couldn’t be eradicated in six months, not in six year, and not in 60 years! In a way, he’s right, corruption has been with us in the last 70 years since the Philippines gained her independence. But that’s putting it mildly. The truth is: corruption has been ingrained in our culture since the Spanish era. That’s more than 400 years! So, how can it be eradicated in six months? Impossible! But Duterte can at least start sending drug lords and corrupt politicians to the gallows. Only then do I know that corruption can be mitigated and could eventually be stopped.Communist insurgency

Another daunting challenge for Duterte is the communist insurgency. The communist rebellion in the Philippines is the only one of its kind in the world today. While Duterte was known to have links with communists and leftists during the early years of his mayorship of Davao City, he is a self-described “socialist.” It would alarm some people -- especially those who are in the upper strata of Philippine society – who brand the socialists as “communists.” But there is a large chasm that separates the two; although, politically, they find them themselves rooting sometimes for the same causes that benefit the common tao – particularly the poor.

And being leftist or socialist sometimes puts someone in league with those who have anti-American sentiments, which begs the question: Would Duterte veer the country away from the United States and bring the country closer to communist China?

I have been wondering myself where he’d lead the country? Would he terminate the U.S.-Philippines Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement

(EDCA), the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA), the Logistics Support Agreement (LSA), and the Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT)? Would he withdraw the case against China that is now before the United Nations’ Permanent Court of Arbitration (PSA)?

Indeed, during the presidential campaign, he sent strong signals about his position vis-à-vis the territorial disputes in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea). Early on, he wanted to initiate bilateral talks with China; thus, abandoning the multilateral negotiation that his predecessor, former president Benigno Aquino III, preferred. The Ambassador to the Philippines Zhao Jianhua took the cue and hopped into a plane to go visit Duterte in Davao City. And even Chinese President Xi Jinping wasted no time in conveying his congratulations when Duterte was being sworn into office. Wind of change

But following his swearing-in, Duterte’s tone changed. He said he’s going to wait until the PCA made its judgment on the arbitration case, which many believe would be favorable to the Philippines. However, China had repeated over and over again that she would not abide by the PCA’s ruling. If that would be the case, the international community might treat China as a “rogue” or “outlaw” state, which would have a highly negative impact on China’s economic and political standing with the rest of the world. The question is: What are Duterte’s options? With his penchant for doing the unexpected in his unorthodox way, he just might surprise everybody with what he would do.

And to quote British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan’s famous “Wind of Change” speech to the South African Parliament in 1960: “The wind of change is blowing through this continent. Whether we like it or not, this growth of national consciousness is a political fact.” Today, that “wind of change” is blowing through the 7,000 islands of the Philippines. And with that change, what used to be Duterte’s unorthodoxy yesterday would be the new orthodoxy today.

Duterte to talk with rebel groups in Mindanao

President Rodrigo Duterte bared on Tuesday about his initial conversation with

Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) chairman Nur Misuari and his plan to travel to Jolo to meet the fugitive leader.

Duterte, speaking at the 69th anniversary celebration of the Philippine Air Force in Clark air base Pampanga, said his team is communicating with Misuari who is facing rebellion charges in connection with the Zamboanga siege in 2013. Duterte added that he is also talking to the MILF on the continuation of the peace process. On the Abu Sayyaf Group, the president has warned

about an imminent “reckoning” for the group responsible for many

atrocities including kidnap-for-ransom and murder in Mindanao.

Duterte to reveal more cop involvement in drugs

President Rodrigo Duterte will name more policemen, including high-ranking

officials who are allegedly involved in drugs.

This was announced by Philippine National Police chief Director General Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa saying that the president’s revelation of the names of five generals allegedly involved in drugs was just the first wave. Dela Rosa added that there is a long list of policemen from

the rank of Senior Superintendent down to Police Officer 1, who are protecting drug syndicates or engaging themselves in illegal drug activities. Three active generals – Police Director Joel Pagdilao, Chief Supt. Edgardo Tinio and Chief Supt. Bernardo Diaz, along with retired police officers Marcelo Garbo and Vicente Loot, were among the PNP generals Duterte identified as drug protectors in his speech on Tuesday at the 69th anniversary of

the Philippine Air Force in Clark Field, Pampanga.

Rosales nixes hero’s burial for Marcos

Former Commission on Human Rights chair Loretta “Etta” Rosales

said the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos could not be buried at the Libingan Ng Mga Bayani because he was not a hero.

Rosales’ reaction was in response to the remarks of President Rodrigo Duterte, who said he would allow a hero’s burial for Marcos to end decades of divisions that hounded the country. Rosales said human rights groups were poised to counter a future decision to bury Marcos at the heroes’ cemetery through a temporary restraining order. The twenty-

year Marcos regime was marked by imprisonment, killings and disappearances of activists and human rights defenders. It was ended by a people power revolution in 1986, which sent the dictator’s family into exile in Hawaii where Marcos died.

Gilas gets eliminated in front of home crowd

The Philippine men’s national basketball team's road to Rio has come to an

end on Wednesday, July 6 after losing to New Zealand, 89-80 at Mall of Asia Arena.

It was the second consecutive defeat in as many days for the Philippine team, which lost to France on Tuesday and finishes the tournament

with a 0-2 record. Gilas Pilipinas appeared sluggish from the start, falling behind in the first quarter. The Philippines came to within two points late in the fourth but committed several turnovers and missed shots. New Zealand will play France with the winner earning a higher seeding in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament semifinals.

Balagtasan is alive, inspiring the younger generation Out & About In Manitoba: Torillos family explores the past at the

Canadian Fossil MuseumWho said that "Balagtasan" belongs to the forgotten past?

Ask the members of OFSAM how they engaged in poetic battle exposing them the vitality and the beauty of the "Balagtasan".

Three seniors citizens, namely Mercie Cuaresman, Eli Mones and Felixberta Cleofas exchanged their poetic talents in the "Balagtasan" sponsored by the Manitoba Council of Canadian Filipino Associations Inc. (MaCCFA) held recently to commemorate the 118th Philippine Independence at the North Centennial Recreation Facility.

The poetic exchanged focused on this topic: "Sino Ang Mas Mahalaga: Anak na Lalaki o Anak na Babae" Mrs. Cuaresma tackled to defend her side: "Mas Mahalaga ang Babae"; and Ms. Felixberta Cleofas voiced out with conviction that "Mas Mahalaga ang Anak na Lalaki";while Eli Mones, another poet, acted as Lakandiwa.

The audience, mostly seniors citizens and some families with their children, had enjoyed listening to the poetic verbal tussle among the three seniors who have the talent to dramatize the topic. With their facial expression, hand gestures and strong voices, their newly-found fans gave warm applause.

MaCCFA holds tournament to promote and sustain indigenous gamesMiss Teenage Manitoba 2016 Denisse Samaniego opens the game..

Sungka? Tumbang preso? Patintero? Tatching? Yoyo? Labtik? Luksong Tinik? Juego de Anillo? Sipa-Sipa? “Holen”?

These are the games which occupied our minds and souls in the growing days in 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. We grew with it, probing that these indigenous games are akin to our rich cultural identity.

But with the advent of an advanced technology, the tv and video games took over, adding to the demise of our indigenous games. Or are these games have gone forever? I don’t think so!

In the 80’s during the time when we organized the Filipino Sports Federation led by Fred de Villa and yours truly, we did promote the indigenous games thru “Mga Palarong Pilipino”, a one day sport tournament of the Filipino games. Interest was so high. We got a special grant from the Provincial government to promote these games. Our mandate was to let the younger generations know that we have had the games played by Filipinos since time immemorial. But this group did not exist for a long time. It fizzled after personality conflicts among the Filipino leaders of a newly founded organization, leading to a natural death of the organization and this hampered

our intention to promote these indigenous games. And now the Manitoba Council of Canadian Filipino Associations, Inc., led by Letty Duque Antonio, president of MaCCFA, has embarked to re-introduce the forgotten games, a rich Filipino cultural identity without any grant from the government.

On June 25, Saturday at the North Centennial Recreation and Activity Centre, MaCCFA, led by Ms.Antonio, the presidents; Rod E.Cantiveros, immediate past president; Julie Holland Javier, board member; and Clarita Nazario, vice president,Tony Antonio, treasurer; and Ben Ignacio, president of Bulacan Associaiton of Manitoba, the sponsoring member association, opened the 2nd year of the “Palarong Pilipino”. And MaCCFA is privileged to welcome Denisse Samaniego, Miss Teenage Manitoba 2016, to open the “Sungka Tournament” and the “Tumbang Preso led by Caring de la Cruz of OFSAM while Lorie Fernandez, another OFSAM officer, became the mentor of Denisse as she opened the “Sungka Tournament”.

“We are dedicated to promote “Palarong Pilipino” as part of the 118th Philippine Independence Celebration, to

make sure that our indigenous games are still part and parcel of our rich cultural heritage,” Letty Duque Antonio says. “With this opportunity to promote and sustain our indigenous games, we would like that the young generations to learn and understand some of our rich cultural identities,” she adds.

After many round robin games, after all the excitements of who would be the champions, and after the last stones, Julie Javier and Tony Antonio won the championship beating Eli Mones and the youngest participant who came with his Mom & younger sister.

Photos by Star Roxas | Filipino Journal

Luisa Marshall brought her talents back to Winnipeg for a second time in as many months. The Filipina singer, talk show host and Tina Turner look alike performed at Pampanga Restaurant and Banquet Hall.

Earlier in May, Luisa Marshall was also in Winnipeg as she made a tour stop on her way to the coast on her Hope Beyond Thunderdome Tour

2016. The Canada-wide coast-to-coast tour has taken her across Canada raising awareness for the Canadian Military Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. So far, the tour has raised more than $21,500 and that amount is expected to grow as the tour continues.

The tour started in her hometown of Vancouver, British Columbia and along with her husband, Steve have

been travelling on the road across Canada all the way to Newfoundland and back.

The Republic of Adoboby Rod E. Cantiveros

Marcelo Garbo, Gen. Vicente Loot, Gen. Bernardo Diaz, Gen. Joel Pagdilao and Gen. Edgardo Tinio.

Jennylyn Mercado stays with GMA-7Jennylyn Mercado renewed her contract with GMA-7 on July 4 after her contract expired last May,

The actress has been a loyal Kapuso ever since winning the talent search reality show “Starstruck” in 2003. She has made more than 20 TV shows for GMA-7 in her 14 years as Kapuso. For its part, the network regards Jennylyn as their “Ultimate Star,” giving her shows of different genres; from dramas and variety shows to cooking shows. Showbiz grapevine had it that she might do a new teleserye with Alden Richards reportedly on the Filipino remake of the Korean series “My Love From The Star.”

A new Enrique Gil in ‘Dukot’Enrique Gil tries out something new in his upcoming film “Dukot.”

For a change, the Kapamilya actor is starring in a project without his onscreen partner and rumored girlfriend, actress Liza Soberano. He will be the lead actor in the upcoming action movie "Dukot," which takes him out of his comfort zone of doing comedy, drama and romantic comedy. Directed by Paul Soriano, the movie is based on a real kidnapping incident in the country more than eight years ago. Also part of the film are Shaina Magdayao, Ricky Davao, Christopher de Leon and Alex Medina. “Dukot” will be in theaters on July 13.

U-Pick strawberry season in full bloom

It was going to be a sunny Saturday, said the weather forecast. So hubby and I

thought we should spend the day out so we decided to go for strawberry picking (I haven't been since last came here for 6 years now) and check out on Prairie Berry, a new strawberry plantation down South of Winnipeg which is about 10

minutes passed University of Manitoba. (Visit their website: http://prairie-berry.com/) I heard there's more places to go around Manitoba, like Boonstra and Mayfair. These farms all have the Pick Your Own (or U-Pick ) Farm.

Strawberry picking season is short, so better call the U-Pick farm and know these details

Maggie Urbano-Chan and family strawberry picking at Mayfair Farm Portage la Prairie. Pasco family.

before going down. Know the strawberry availability, hours of operation, and directions to the strawberry picking location, and the payment methods that are accepted. Many strawberry farms only accept cash, so make sure you take the correct payment vehicle.

Before going to pick strawberries, it is important to know what your quantity goals for strawberry picking are. Try to determine how many strawberries you will be using for cooking, processing, or eating fresh. Once you determine how many strawberries you need, try not to pick strawberries in excess of that amount. Strawberries have a notoriously short “shelf-life” and will go bad quickly. They will quickly begin to get moldy if left at room temperature and only remain edible for 2 or 3 days if refrigerated. Picking too many strawberries will end up costing you time and money if you aren’t able to use them quickly.

Take a hat and sunscreen so that you won’t get sunburned and bring your drinking water so that you don’t get dehydrated. A snack or two might also be a good idea if you will be out strawberry picking for an extended period of time. Bugs aren’t generally a tremendous nuisance, but if it has been especially rainy recently, bug repellant might be a good idea. Make sure to also wear closed shoes, if you don’t want your feet to get wet and bring back some caked mud.

It was a fun and delicious activity, great for groups or families with small children, a great experience for everybody under the sun. It is very rewarding too! Even though I love strawberry and regularly buying at shops like supermarkets, the feeling is different after you harvest the berries yourself. It is my first time again to experience picking after 12 years, my last was back in the Philippines, in La Trinidad Benguet which is known as the "Strawberry Capital of the Philippines"

It was a great experience and I must say that staff was very delightful and accommodating. They are polite, friendly and very courteous. We highly recommend Prairie Berry, and will surely come back.

Don't miss the fun! Take a bite out of a fresh, juicy and sweet strawberry.

For more information about U-Pick Strawberry farms, visit the Prairie Fruit Growers Association website - pfga.ca. The Prairie Fruit Growers Association is a voluntary non-profit organization representing fruit crop growers.

Gaano Mo Kakilala ang Manitoba? (part 2)(Some Significant Landmarks in Winnipeg)

The Oldest Building in Winnipeg

Located at 444 York Avenue, in Downtown Winnipeg, the former Vaughan Street Jailhouse is the oldest building in the city, still standing since its construction in 1881. Designed by the architect Charles Osborne Wickensen, it was later modified, in 1909, by Samuel Hooper. No longer functioning as a jailhouse, the building has become a historic

site. If you are interested to see its interior, you may visit the place. Guided tours are open to the public. The Tallest Building in Winnipeg

The office tower at the intersection of Portage Avenue and Main Street is named 201 Portage. At its height of 420 feet, the 33-storey structure is currently Winnipeg’s tallest building. It was originally built in 1988 by Toronto Dominion Bank, based on the design by Charles Bentall Architects, and was completed in 1990. The current owner of the establishment is Portage & Main Development Ltd.(Former) Winnipeg Cold Storage Company Ltd Building

Located at 422 Jarvis Avenue, in the Dufferin Industrial neighborhood, adjacent to

the Salter Street Bridge, this unmissable building used to house The Winnipeg Cold Storage Company Ltd. The company was founded by the local entrepreneur Meyer Chechik, who hired Max Blankstein to render the initial architectural design for the building, which was built in the 1930s. The building is no longer in use.Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral

The highest throne of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada actually resides in this particular cathedral, which is located at 1175 Main Street, between College and Mountain Avenues. Its construction began in 1949; it officially opened in 1962. It was built in the style of traditional Ukrainian Orthodox cathedrals in Ukraine, with five copper domes and a Byzantine Iconostas. The large mosaic of the trinity at the front of the building was designed by Leo Mol, a Ukrainian Canadian stained-glass artist and sculptor.

In the next issue, we will continue our site-seeing to know more about the city, or perhaps it’s time to go farther to the outer skirts of Winnipeg. So, stay tuned and always grab your copy of Filipino Journal.

Erratum NoticeIn our feature of the Gaano Mo Kakilala ang Manitoba? (Some Significant Landmarks in Winnipeg) in the Filipino Journal print edition (June 20 - July 5, 2016, we placed it under the column banner Sa Ugoy ng Musika it is supposed to be under Sa Madaling Salita masthead.

The bill mandates a three-year compensation increase for the national government’s 1.53

Aljur takes biggest challenge in ‘Hermano Puli’

Hunk actor Aljur Abrenica takes on the biggest challenge of his career by

taking the lead role in “Ang Hapis at Himagsik ni Hermano Puli.”

The historical film by Gil Portes is based on the story of Apolinario de la Cruz, the religious leader who founded the Cofradia de San Jose (Confraternity of Saint Joseph). He led a rebellion against the Spaniards after his application to become a priest was rejected due to his Filipino race. Aljur did his research for his role and went to Hermano Puli’s hometown in Lucban, Quezon. The actor said he wants to prove that there’s

more to him than winning the title of “Ultimate Hunk” in the talent search series, Starstuck. “Ang

Hapis at Himagsik ni Hermano Puli” opens on September 21 in cinemas nationwide.

sandbars to cast jig ‘n grub combos or spoons and have been rewarded with some solid fish.Northern Pike

Often times looked down upon by local anglers as a nuisance fish, pike or ‘jackfish’ are extremely fun to target and are relatively easy to find. During the summer when most fish are taking a break from the heat, these fish are more than willing to cooperate by slamming many lure or cut bait offerings. Smaller ones affectionately called ‘hammer handles’ can often help with providing action on many otherwise slow days on the water. Back bays, marsh waters, and smaller rivers or creeks are full of these toothy predators. Few ever complain when they successfully land a trophy sized specimen as these fish are truly impressive when you have one in front of you.Freshwater Drum

Classified as a rough fish, these underappreciated scrappers are a handful on rod and reel. Also

Common Manitoba Sport Fish To Target This Summer

WalleyeAlso known as ‘pickerel’,

this species is the most popular sportfish targeted by Manitoba anglers. So much so that it was recently voted in as our official provincial fish. They are sought after in no small part due to the fact that they make delicious table fare. Popular Filipino dishes that can be prepared with walleye are ‘sinigang na isda’ and ‘pesang

isda’. Easier to target in the fall during the greenback run, these fish can still be readily caught on most lakes and rivers in the province. During the heat of summer, the best times to go after them are early in the morning and in the evening when they are most actively feeding. Their closely related smaller cousin the Sauger, is equally as tasty and are plentiful to catch on the Red and

Assiniboine rivers as well as any waterways that feed into or on Lake Winnipeg.Channel Catfish

The stretch of the Red River just north of Lockport to the big lake is world renowned for its fantastic trophy channel catfish fishery. While this area is definitely loaded with monster fish, these voracious predators can also be caught anywhere in the river waters within Winnipeg all the way to the U.S. border. The beaches along Lake Winnipeg and Pine Falls are also good places to target these hard fighters. Throwing a simple weight and hook rig out with shrimp or any cut bait is usually enough to tempt one into biting. If you intend to specifically go after cats, a must is suitable tackle and equipment for big fish to reduce stress on the fish due to long battles.White Bass

Also locally referred to as ‘striped bass’, these fish will aggressively attack a variety of lures and bait. White bass are fun to target as they fight hard and school up in huge numbers. After their annual spring spawning run,

they can be harder to find but are definitely worth searching out for. Roaming the vast waters of Lake

Winnipeg, they will often make forays into the shoreline waters to feed in the summer. Throwing out rigs baited with minnows at places like Winnipeg Beach or Chalet Beach can sometimes pay off in big numbers caught. I have also waded out into the waters of the big lake at Gimli to the outlying continuation on page 27

known as ‘silver bass’, they make decent table fare when prepared on the grill. Catching a drum typically signifies the start of the summer season as they become fully active once the water temperatures warm up. Catching these fish off the shores of the Red or Assiniboine rivers with minnows or worms is a great way to get people and kids into some decent easy action. They are plentiful to catch but are also feisty and heavy on the line.Smallmouth Bass

Often called the ‘pound for pound’ hardest fighting freshwater fish, the smallmouth bass is no doubt a fun fish to target. They will hit top water, fast moving, or dead still presentations with equal ferocity. Nothing quite compares to a bass leaping out of the water on the end of your line. Canadian Shield lakes and rivers in the eastern part of the province are full of ‘smallies’ ready to hit your lures this summer.Yellow Perch

Another fun fish to catch albeit much smaller in size and fight are the yellow perch. These colourful panfish are plentiful in numbers once a school is found and are very good table fare as well. Fishing at the marinas at Gimli or at Hecla Island are popular spots to target summertime perch. Under docks and piers in the Whiteshell are also good places to try and get into some.

Florencio “Tony” Antonio turns 80 with double celebration

Age does not matter. And of course, age is only a number.

And for Tony Antonio, age does not hamper to be active volunteering in the community; and for him he is only 40 if we consider the popular adage: life begins at 40!

On the very day of his birthday celebration, his friends and his family members gathered in their residence. Some had brought gifts and food and had a great time to mark his 80th birthday.

And the biggest slambang for his 80th birthday when his sister Elizabeth married to Patrick Dunbar, a native of Scotland, who are residenst in Los Angeles had hosted the USA party attended by his brother Mario, sisters Morita and Ileana with their families, who came from the Philippines to join the celebrations.

It was a great experience at 80 because Elizabeth planned side trips to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon.

SOFEA celebrates 118th Philippine Independence and Heritage Day Celebration

The Philippines commemorated its 118th Declaration of

Independence Day from Spain on June 12th, 2016. Filipinos all over the world, including those who are residing here in Winnipeg, celebrate annually its Independence Day.

On June 8th, 2016, Seven Oaks Filipino Employees Association (SOFEA), Seven Oaks School Division and Maples Collegiate proudly held another

momentous event in connection with Philippine Independence and Heritage Day Celebration.

The program involved not only its students and the schools in Seven Oaks School Division but also the Seven Oaks community, from the very young to senior citizens. An exhibit showcased the Philippine culture and traditions. Dr. Porfiria Pedrina, SOFEA president shared to the audience the mission-vision of the association as well as the different

projects they have undertaken so far. While Rica Facundo, a student from Maples Collegiate read a brief history of Philippine Independence Day.

Capturing the huge audience’s attention were the students special dance numbers and special song numbers. As well, a skit from Cine-gang drew the hearts of the young ones in understanding how courtship is done the Filipino way.

Many students and parents feel closer to their roots and proud of their heritage when they see such enthusiasm, love and passion from this festive

atmosphere and from the way the participants perform and deliver their lines. Indeed, the celebration is worth repeating.
