More badminton and more smashing!Great mix of fun, fitness and food for Badminton Smashers Club of WinnipegBadminton is huge in the Philippines and for as many new immigrants arriving in Winnipeg, it’s only a matter of time before badminton becomes another favourite indoor court sports activity for Pinoys in Winnipeg. Luckily, the Manitoba Badminton Association offers the Badminton Access Program at Wheelies Roller Rink and provides a low cost, central location to encourage the sport as a form of entertainment, social gathering and community building.

Thanks to the Badminton Access Program, Charina Corbillion started the Badminton Smashers Club of Winnipeg group on Facebook and brought together many Filipino badminton players of all ages and skills. The group now has over 80 members and growing weekly as more family, friends and kabayans find out about it. Due to the increasing popularity of the program, and probably due to the weather getting colder, more players are coming out to join the festivities on and off the badminton court.

Smasher Club member, Raki Pampolina enjoys her time at Wheelies because it’s fun to meet other players and improve her badminton skills. The members are the best as they are approachable, friendly and always wearing a smile.

New to the sport of badminton is Ellen Natividad and she’s enjoyed the fun and recreational benefits including meeting new members at Wheelie. The fun part includes the very active and engaging discussions that happen on a daily basis on the group’s

active discussions on Facebook. The Badminton Access

Program will strive to give families, adults, multi-sport athletes, seniors, recreation and competitive players an opportunity to access badminton at their convenience and leisure. Riding along with the Pinoy Trail BikersPTB hosts first group meet and greet biking fiestaBy Ron Cantiveros

It only took a couple years for the Pinoy Trail Bikers - Winnipeg to host their first

official Get Together and Meet & Greet at Birds Hill Park on Sunday, September 7. The Pinoy Trail Bikers was originally featured in a previous edition of the Filipino Journal as a growing Facebook group that brings Filipino biking enthusiasts together. There are now over 200 members in the Pinoy Trail Bikers – Winnipeg Facebook Group. The Meet & Greet was organized by Richie Flores and part of the agenda included a bike clinic by Gerry Salenga with Woodcock Cycle.

The Meet & Greet was an opportunity for many PTB members to finally meet some other members in real life and included the distribution of the much anticipated inaugural PTB trail jerseys. The Meet & Greet was a full-on family affair as many PTB members brought along their families to enjoy the outdoors and fellowship that accompanies many Filipino fiestas and celebrations.

The Pinoy Trail Bikers inspired Jovil Valeros to compete in his first cross country mountain bike race at the Back 40 Race in Morden. He hopes to explore more trails in Manitoba and northwestern Ontario.

Sam Fuentes is the resident GoPro ‘chesty’ videophile of the Pinoy Trail Bikers with his entertaining trail ride videos posted from his YouTube account. He had little experience with trail biking before joining the group

and the frequent group rides helped him improve his riding skills. Just like Jovil Valeros, he’s hopeful to see more members join the group rides. Next year’s goal for the group is heading west to ride the Canadian Rockies.

Gerry Salenga is a bike technician with Woodcock Cycle and hosted a bike clinic during the meet & greet. Part of the bike clinic covered basic bike maintenance and routine checklist such as checking tire pressure, brakes, lubing all moving parts and brake & shifting cable adjustments. Salenga also touched on biking etiquette on the trails which include giving way to hikers, greeting other riders and trail users, and no littering on the trails.

One of the action items for the group is to register the group as a member of the Manitoba Cycling Association (MCA). As a MCA member, the group would enjoy

a full list of value added services and benefits including member insurance, event sanctioning for PTB directed races, and access to development funding of up to $500 annually per approved club application.

On behalf of the PTB organizers and administrators, Richie Flores would like to thank everyone that participated in the success of their first annual meet & greet. Without the support of the

PTB members, sponsors and most importantly the PTB families, he’s thankful for the new camaraderie. Mabuhay PTB!

Get Fit, Have Fun, Give Back

Getting healthy isn't always about running to the gym and sipping protein

shakes. Staying active, keeping healthy can also be fun and rewarding. Whether your run for fun or to get healthy, there are a multitude of events throughout the year where you can get exercise, have fun with friends and also give back to the community.

Dirty Donkey Mud RunIn it's 3rd year, the Dirty

Donkey Mud Run is a 5km outdoor adventure race where getting down and dirty is all part of the excitement. The race takes you over hay bales, mud ponds, forest trails, monkey bars and even more mud pits. Oh yes, there are obstacles too along the race which include heavy lifting, heavy pulling and heavy breathing as you scamper to the next obstacle. The challenges are fun and the reward is more mud and dirty on your body. You definitely can't beat that combination.

Electric Donkey RunImagine 2000 runners in neon

running through the Forks, St.

Boniface and downtown. It was a 5km run (we walked) which started at the Forks and ended at the Manitoba Legislature. Along the way, the Electric Donkey runners were getting their glow on! The wave of neon lights of Electric Donkey runners were a welcome addition to the annual Manyfest activities in downtown Winnipeg.

Terry Fox RunIf you remember back in

August, the Province of Manitoba proclaimed the August Civic holiday after Terry Fox. Terry Fox was a young man that set out to run his Marathon of Hope in 1908 to raise awareness for cancer. The Terry Fox Run is held around the globe and over 2000 runners made it out to the Winnipeg run at Assiboine Park. The Terry Fox Foundation has raised more than $650 million for cancer research.

The Dirty Donkey Mud Run and Electric Donkey Run both support the Children's Hospital for #WeAllGetToPlay project for the rooftop play structure. All pledges and donations from both runs go to that cause.

Pinoy pride at the region’s biggest tournaments

This is my second season of competing in major fishing tournaments. Events

in Manitoba and Northwest Ontario vary in size and level of competition from one day casual derbies to smaller ‘club’ or town tournaments to big multi-day tournaments. The majority of events target either walleye or bass and are almost all two-person team formats. All of the events are catch and release. I have entered or am registered for numerous competitions this year of all sizes

and species with various partners. Bass season is winding down but there are still a few major walleye events to go.

I consider myself to be a pretty decent angler but the learning curve at all of these events has been steep. There are a multitude of talented and skilled anglers who compete every week and trying to beat out the field for a share of the prize money is no easy feat. To ‘cash a cheque’ or prize, a team typically needs to finish in the top 10-20 percent of the field. I have had moderate success so far in the bigger events as a ‘rookie’ but am getting much closer to figuring out what it takes to challenge for a title.

The biggest bass tournament in our area is the three-day Kenora Bass International in August. This year’s field had 141 teams including a good number of professionals who actually compete and/or guide for a living. This is the second year for me and my partner Jeremy Santos. We finished in 52nd last year and fell a bit to 73rd this year. Another

major bass event I attended was the three-day Bassin’ for Bucks in Sioux Narrows, ON this past Labour Day weekend. I fished this event with Jeff Matias who was fishing his first ever bass tournament. We were close to the top of the field of 124 boats after the first day but our weights went down each day and we slipped to 53rd. I also compete on the Central Walleye Trail with my wife Divine and we are currently in the hunt for Mixed Team of the Year and me for Angler of the Year with two more tournaments to go.

At most of these events we are quite often the only ‘minority’ people there and we tend to stick out quite obviously. The local fishing community is very welcoming however and we have made many new friends and acquaintances though these competitions. My goal is to have even more avid anglers from our community start to participate. If you are interested in learning more about local competitive fishing visit my website at www.kickerfish.ca or email me anytime.

Procedural unfairness, or lack of diligence? When it comes

to immigration applications, there is

sometimes a fine line between what is considered to be unfair treatment by Citizenship and Immigration Canada and what is considered to be a lack of attention on part of the applicant.

In the case of Routhledge v. Canada (Citizenship and Immigration), the Applicant, Mr. Antony Routhledge, felt that he was not treated fairly by the immigration officer.

In this case, Mr. Routhledge, a citizen of the United Kingdom r became involved in a relationship

with a Canadian citizen. Mr. Routhledge, who had a daughter from a previous relationship, filed an application for permanent residency under the spouse of a Canadian. In this application, he listed his daughter, Kristin, as a non-accompanying dependent child.More than one chance to get it right

Even though Kristin was not going to move to Canada, in order for Mr. Routhledge’s application to be approved, both he and Kristin had to undergo medical examinations done by doctors designated Citizenship

and Immigration Canada. Mr. Routhledge did his exam with a designated doctor. Kristin, however, was taken by her mother to a doctor who was not on the approved list.

Upon submitting his daughter’s medical report to Citizenship and Immigration Canada, the immigration officer told Mr. Routhledge that the doctor that Kristin had visited was not a designated doctor. As a result, the results were not valid. The immigration officer gave Mr. Routhledge a three-month extension to get Kristin examined by a designated doctor. Despite this, Kristin was again taken to a different undesignated doctor.

Based on Kristin’s lack of a medical report from a designated doctor Mr. Routhledge’s application was refused.

Mr. Routhledge responded that he would like to have Kristin removed from his application all together. This request was denied, based on the fact that Mr. Routhledge did not provide any documentation to support

his claim that his ex-spouse (Kristin’s mother) had sole custody of Kristin. Based on all of these facts, Mr. Routhledge was refused Canadian permanent residency. The applicant’s responsibility

In this case, the judge found that Mr. Routhledge was repeatedly made aware of the requirement to have his daughter examined by a designated doctor and the consequences of failing to do so. Despite these warnings, the judge found that Mr. Routhledge repeatedly demonstrated what the judge called was a “lack of diligence”. As a result, the judge found that he was “the author of his own misfortune” .The line between procedural unfairness and a lack of diligence on part of Mr. Routhledge is quite wide. He was given more than one opportunity to submit the property evidence with his application and, though he indicated that his ex-wife was the one responsible for getting Kristin seen by a designated doctor, it was he who failed to

meet the requirements set out by Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s request. Based on these facts, Mr. Routhledge’s application for review was refused and he lost his case.

Major reduction in Employment Insurance (EI) premiums for small business ownersThe Small Business Job Credit will reduce Employment Insurance (EI) premiums by 15 percent for the next two years. Any firm that pays employer EI premiums equal to or less than $15,000 in those years will be eligible for the credit, which will be applied automatically. It is estimated that this will result in savings of approximately $550 million for small businesses over the next two years.

Businesses will not have to apply for the Small Business Job Credit, as it will be automatically administered by the Canada Revenue Agency, which will determine eligibility and calculate the amount of the credit. Once calculated, the credit will be applied against any outstanding

debt and then the remaining amount, if any, will be refunded to the small business.

“Our Government recognizes the importance of small businesses in fueling the Canadian economy,” said MP Toet. “The Small Business Job Credit is great news for small businesses in Elmwood-Transcona, as it will enable them to hire more employees and continue to grow our local economy.”

The Government of Canada has introduced numerous measures since 2006 to support small business growth, including the temporary hiring credit and the EI rate freeze. In total, small businesses have seen their taxes reduced by 34 percent since 2006.

Aquino seeks EU support in resolving South China Sea disputePresident Aquino met with European Commission President José Manuel Barroso at the EC headquarters in the Berlaymont building in Brussels, Belgium with both leaders emphasizing the need to settle differences between China and its neighbors peacefully through international arbitration.

Aquino said China, which claims around 90 percent of the South China Sea, will have to listen noting that the EU

is its biggest trading partner. Beijing has rejected international arbitration, insisting that disputes should be resolved bilaterally with individual claimants like the Philippines.

Barroso, in a joint press conference with Aquino at the EC headquarters, said the European Union, is a party to the 1976 Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia, which seeks to promote perpetual peace, everlasting amity and cooperation

in the region.Aquino assured Barroso

that the Philippines remains committed to advancing a peaceful, rules-based resolution to the disputes in the South China Sea that is based on international law. The Philippine President said he was banking on the EU to convince other parties to refrain from activities that increase tensions and clarify their claims based on the Unclos.

P-Noy’s legacy: Debasing Cory’s legacy

With one and a half years to go before the next presidential elections,

the race is heating up among several wannabes including recycled presidential candidates and newbies who have nothing else but optimism – and ambition – to reach the pinnacle of power. And by the looks of it, it’s going to be a very expensive run to the top.

Right now, there are two declared candidates and a third – President Benigno “P-Noy”Aquino III – who is exploring for a way to amend the Constitution to allow a sitting president to run for re-election.

Let’s set P-Noy aside for a moment and look at Vice President Jejomar “Jojo” Binay and Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago who had made known of their plans to run for the country’s top job. Binay and Santiago are considered giants in a political landscape dominated by a menagerie of political dwarves with mediocre leadership talents and humongous ambitions.

Binay was a former mayor of Makati, arguably the richest city government in terms of revenue, who had made a name for himself in the more than two decades. But he is not Mr. Clean by any standard, having been accused of massive corruption in a city, which he and his immediate family controlled since the EDSA People Power Revolution more than quarter of a century ago. Called the “Lord of Makati,” Vice President Jojo and his wife, former Makati Mayor Elenita had allegedly amassed a multitude of prime real estate properties. And with their son, Makati Mayor Junjun, and two daughters – Senator Nancy, and Congresswoman Abigail, keeping the Binay political dynasty unshakably entrenched in positions of power, influence, and wealth, the Binays are on top of the world.

Jojo sees himself as the president-in-waiting with approval ratings in the high 70s. And no amount of demolition job, as he calls it, including plunder charges against him, could derail his presidential bandwagon. But if he falls from his lofty position, it would be head down with a

crashing, deadly thud, which would result in his political death.

The immediate danger would be if the Ombudsman gathered enough evidence to support the plunder and graft charges against Binay, his son Makati Mayor Junjun Binay, and 23 others in relation to the alleged overpricing in the construction of an 11-story parking building that the city allegedly built for P1.56 billion. The complaint claimed that in 2007 then-Mayor Jojo Binay had “proposed and approved” a city ordinance for the construction of the parking building with an initial budget of P400 million; thus, making it “the most expensive parking building in the entire country.”

The question is: Should the Binays be indicted for plunder, would the graft court, Sandiganbayan, issue arrest warrants against them? If so, it could be the end of Binay’s presidential run. Unless, he will continue to run from behind bars just like when Sen. Sonny Trillanes run for senator in 2007 from his detention cell. And if he won the race, he would be released to assume the presidency, which would give him immunity from prosecution, including plunder.

Meanwhile, while Binay is now pictured as corrupt and evil by his political enemies, Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago, the feisty past presidential candidate who had gained a solid reputation of incorruptibility as hard as the granite Rock of Gibraltar had indicated her plan to run. But she has health problems that could stop her cold in her second quest for the presidency. A few months ago, she announced that she was diagnosed with lung cancer. However, she said that she is taking a daily dose of a “wonder pill” that has removed about 80% of the cancer tumor. She indicated that she would pursue her run if she had fully recovered from the disease.

And true to her prominence as a graft-buster, it came as no surprise when she indicated her preference for a running mate: Davao City Mayor Rodrigo “Digong” Duterte. She said that Digong, as his constituents call him, would make an excellent

vice-president since the two problems in the country are corruption and peace and order.

Next on Miriam’s short list is former Defense Secretary Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro, P-Noy’s second cousin. However, Gibo showed no interest in the job. And unless he changes his mind, he is out of the race.

The third person Miriam is considering is Sen. Grace Poe. Although Grace is a political neophyte who won a Senate seat in 2012, she projects an untainted image. Being the daughter of the late presidential candidate and action actor Fernando Poe Jr., Grace was being groomed from the day she was sworn into office, not for vice president but for president. She had made it known that she was not against running for president in spite of her inexperience. But who says that experience makes a good president?

Grace might just be lucky to have two traditional politicians – trapos – as opponents: Jojo who is just a few legal steps away from jail and Miriam who may be pre-empted to seek the presidency by health issues. And if Grace plays the game right, she just might ride a crest of public outcry against a corruption-ridden government including the pork barrel scams that had blown in the faces of lawmakers for allegedly stealing the people’s money.

But regardless of the white-pure innocent persona of Grace, the question of P-Noy gunning for a constitutional amendment to remove the ban on the president from seeking a second term is gaining momentum. And this begs the question: Can the Supreme Court stop the tinkering of the Constitution to allow P-Noy to run for re-election?

With two Supreme Court unanimous rulings declaring the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) and the Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP) illegal and unconstitutional, the high court might deal P-Noy with another reversal, which would effectively reduce him to a lame duck entity for the rest of his term.

But can the Supreme Court stop P-Noy from subverting the spirit of the 1987 Constitution, which his mother, the late president Cory Aquino had worked so hard to embody in the Constitution to prevent gross abuses of presidential powers in the future?

Sad to say, the irony of her own son debasing her legacy bodes ill for what lays ahead. But there is always a bright side beyond the looming gloom. Like they say, “Every cloud has a silver lining.”

Ambassador Garcia Launches Winter Escapade 2, Counts on Filipino Communities as Support Base for PH-Canada Relations

Garcia addresses Filipino community leaders from Ottawa and Montreal.

Signalling her priorities for bilateral relations, Ambassador Petronila P. Garcia reached out to Filipino community representatives from Ottawa and Montreal within days of her assumption of post as the Philippines’ top envoy to Canada.

At a ‘meet and greet’ activity on 29 August 2014 at the Philippine Embassy in Ottawa, Ambassador Garcia laid bare her mission to build on the strong foundation of Filipino-Canadian friendship to expand existing cooperation between the Philippines and Canada while facilitating commercial ties between the two countries.

The Ambassador recalled recent milestones in bilateral relations, such as the designation of the Philippines as a Country of Focus for Canadian development assistance and as priority market for trade, the high level exchanges including the visit of Prime Minister Stephen Harper to the Philippines in 2012, and how bilateral ties have been transformed over the years by Filipinos in Canada, now 660,000-strong.

Ambassador Garcia also called attention to important activities where community support will be productive such as Winter Escapade 2, Team Philippines-Canada’s flagship tourism project, the ongoing registration of Filipino overseas

voters, and the campaign for Vigan to be named one of the Seven Wonder Cities of the World.

The Ambassador seized the occasion to launch the Winter Escapade 2, a unique group tour which she herself will lead on 30 January – 6 February 2015 in the islands of Negros Oriental, Siquijor, Bohol and Cebu. Riding on the success of the first Winter Escapade in January 2014, next year’s Winter Escapade eight-day, seven-night package is expected to attract hundreds of Filipino-Canadian and mainstream visitors as inquiries have been pouring in even before the launching of the tour. Throughout September, details of the tour package will be presented by the Embassy and Philippine Consulates-General to various audiences across Canada.

The meet-and-greet likewise provided the opportunity for the blessing of the Embassy’s new multi-purpose hall and showroom by Fr. Pedro Arana of the Assumption Church in Ottawa who also prayed for the success of the Ambassador, her team and mission.

“I come to Canada at a time we are enjoying a renaissance in our relationship and the promise that our shared values will form the basis of creating value – for a better quality of life for all concerned. Let us make it so,” Ambassador Garcia stated.

Ambassador Garcia invites Filipino community members to join Winter Escapade 2 (WE2) .

Discovering Employer ExpectationsBy Jonathan Bauer | Employment Solutions for Immigrants Inc.

At Employment Solutions, newcomers often ask: How long will it take me to

find a job in my profession? There is no one answer to this question, as everyone’s circumstances are different. However, experience has shown that newcomers who focus less on a specific time frame and instead invest more time and energy in uncovering employer expectations and building their network succeed faster at entering and advancing careers in their profession.

Sid is a newcomer who arrived in Manitoba in April 2014. Sid was an IT Project Manager in his home country and is now successfully employed as an analyst with one of Manitoba’s leading financial institutions. We asked Sid to share his top four tips for successfully discovering employer expectations and integrating into the labour market: 1.Set targets: Set a target to meet at least one professional from your field every day. This sounds difficult because of the busy schedules of company representatives, but it is possible. Contact human resources, staff, and management (whether supervisors, directors, or vice-presidents) on professional networking sites, by email, or at other networking events for informational interviews. Always provide a brief overview of your expertise; then explain how your skills can benefit the company, and request an opportunity to meet them to discuss your professional background in detail. Let’s say you send a request to 50 professionals

and receive a response from 30 individuals. By following up, you will reach your target of meeting one professional every day. Building these connections also helps you when you are looking for your next career step. 2.Diversify: Don’t put all your effort towards one job opportunity and waiting for the outcome. Instead, channel your actions towards all relevant jobs available in your field of expertise. Researching job requirements and networking with professionals who confirmed that I had the ability and right skills to succeed in my field (and gave me tips on targeting my resume and cover letters) gave me confidence that I could succeed. 3.Volunteer: In May, I joined the Project Management Institute (Manitoba Chapter) as a volunteer with their Membership Committee and started attending their monthly meetings. This gave me the opportunity to meet project managers and other senior executives from the industry

and initiate conversations with them. I gave the executives an overview of my profile and asked them what they were looking for in hiring someone for a position in my field of expertise. I got some really positive responses and incorporated this feedback in future job applications.4.Persevere: Staying focused on your professional goals is of utmost importance. This focus gave me strength to persevere in spite of challenges. Networking is the key to success in the Canadian job market. I utilized professional networking sites to connect and meet professionals in my field, which helped me to set a baseline for current and future job opportunities.

Successful newcomers, including Sid, will be sharing their stories as a part of Career and Workforce Development Month events hosted by Employment Solutions during November 2014. For more information please visit: www.manitobastart.com/careermonth.

Canada’s first Filipino-Canadian Senator has served for 2 years

Saturday, September 6, 2014, marks the second anniversary of Senator Tobias C. Enverga Jr.’s appointment to the Senate of Canada. The historic recommendation by the Rt. Hon. Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada, made Senator Enverga the first Filipino-Canadian to serve in the Senate of Canada.

“My second year in the Senate has proved to be more demanding, yet more rewarding, than I expected,” said Senator Enverga in a statement. “What stands out is the disastrous impact of Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda, which mobilized Canadians from coast to coast to coast, to come together to help. Our government’s rapid and appropriate response resulted in a total contribution of $170 million. Thank you to all who contributed.”

Senator Enverga made two visits to the affected region to witness the destruction first hand, and to visit Canadian funded humanitarian projects. He visited Estancia, Iloilo on January 22, 2014 and Tacloban City on July 15, 2014.

The legislative agenda during this year has been very demanding with several bills being studied by the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology, of which Senator Enverga is a member. Changes to the Citizenship Act, budget implementation bills and a study on prescription pharmaceuticals in Canada are some of the major achievements. The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans, another committee Senator Enverga is a member of, is conducting a study on the aquaculture industry in Canada which has proven to be a steep learning curve.

“This year I have attended over 260 events, and given more than 60 speeches in the community,” said Senator

Enverga. “These are usually in the evenings and on weekends, which makes the life of a senator very busy. The work pays off, though, and ties between Canada and the Philippines have never been stronger.”

“I want to thank everyone who has contacted my office with their issues, and who have showed me support through my second year in the Senate.”

Meet Mekhi the basketball championBy Derek Dabee

Every coach of team sports loves to have players with exceptional talents and the

willingness to learn. Ten-year-old basketball sensation Mekhi Dela Cruz Lisan fits that bill.

Mekhi started playing little league basketball at age five. In the following five years, his teams have racked up an amazing 12 league and tournament championships.

Recently, his teams won the 2014 Hoop It Up 3-on-3 tournament, the Grand Forks Grade 4 Division Championships and he was the winner of the 2014 Philippines Basketball Association

(PBA) All Star and MVP awards. When Mekhi was just three,

he would take to the court with his mini-basketball at halftime of his older brothers’ games at Red River Community Centre. It was the start of his stellar career.

In 2010 Mekhi joined his first team — Junior Tykes — in the Winnipeg Athletic Association for Youth (WAAY). His team won the championship. The coach. Mike Lisan — Mekhi’s dad — stressed fair play and sportsmanship to his young players.

Mekhi is currently a member of the Winnipeg Spirit in the Philippines Basketball

Association. Veteran coach Red Ducharme said, "I can spot a special athlete and Mekhi is super-talented. At any game situation I can put in Mekhi and he brings a smile to my face."

His PBA team will represent Winnipeg at this year’s Cities Filipino Basketball Association tournament in Windsor, Ont.

Tournament coach Ron Balingit said "Mekhi practices sportsmanship and his court sense is very advanced."

The keen Grade 4 student at A.E. Wright School is excellent in track and field sports. He also likes to ride his bike and play video games.

The popular young champion is a committed basketballer who loves to improve his game. He likes to attend high school games and a basketball hoop is a magnet to him. Whether in his driveway, school gyms or at the community centre, he will always find time to go and practise his shots.

"The joy of playing the game is the magic of Mekhi’s success," said Alexzandra Dela Cruz, Mekhi’s mother.

Canada Accredits First Female Philippine Ambassador

Presiding over the presentation of credentials of six (6) newly-arrived Ambassadors to Canada, His Excellency, the Right Honourable David Johnston, warmly received today Her Excellency, Philippine Ambassador Petronila P. Garcia in a stately ceremony at the Rideau Hall in Ottawa.

Ambassador Garcia handed over to Governor General Johnston her letter of credence and the letter of recall of her predecessor, Ambassador Leslie B. Gatan.

In his welcome address, the Governor General recognized the knowledge and skills that Ambassador Garcia will bring to bear on Philippines-Canada relations, which are largely shaped by people-to-people ties fostered by some 660,000 Filipinos in Canada. He expressed confidence that the Philippines and Canada will benefit from the Ambassador’s dedication to building a better world. Noting that he and the Ambassador find common ground in their legal education, the

Governor General hoped to discuss their common interest when time permits and looked forward to new and exciting partnerships between Canada and the Philippines.

During her tête-à-tête with the Governor General, Ambassador Garcia summarized her priorities for growing bilateral ties with Canada, among them more educational partnerships in the fields of agriculture, engineering, environmental protection, educational technology and information technology. The Philippine Ambassador took the occasion to convey the Filipino people’s gratitude for Canada’s tremendous disaster relief assistance in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan last year, including the deployment of Canada’s Disaster Assistance Relief Team (DART) by Canada to the island of Panay. The conversation also dwelled upon the recent designation of the Philippines as a Country of Focus for Canada’s development

to ensure that Philippine-Canadian friendship will continue to flourish on the back of healthy political and economic relations with the large Filipino diaspora in Canada providing a rich context to pursue our goals,” Ambassador Garcia remarked.

Anniversary of 9/11 and Canada’s National Day of Service“On September 11th, 2001, a group of terrorists targeting New York and the heart of the U.S. Government silenced the futures of nearly 3,000 innocent citizens from the United States and around the world – including 24 Canadians.

“To the people who mourn their loss most profoundly, the friends and families of the victims, Laureen and I offer our respect, our condolences and hope that you find comfort in the fact that Canadians remember that awful day and grieve with you.

“A key lesson of 9/11 is to remain vigilant against terror groups and regimes that seek to establish safe havens such as the one which existed in Afghanistan prior to 2001, where the 9/11 perpetrators were allowed to thrive.

“While 9/11 will forever be remembered for the senseless nature of the attacks, it is important to recall that in the midst of terror and destruction, there was also enormous compassion, giving, bravery, and generosity to eclipse that darkness.

“There were waves of first responders who selflessly risked their lives in the aftermath of the attacks. There was the service of volunteers – military and civilian alike – and the generosity of many more who lent a hand as Good Samaritans. Canadians in Gander, Newfoundland, and a number of other communities hosted several thousand diverted air passengers, treating these stranded people like family and friends, inviting them into their community and into their homes.

“It is in honour and celebration of these acts of kindness that Canada designated September 11th as our National Day of Service in 2011, a day in which charitable deeds, fundraisers and community service can act as an antithesis to the inhumane acts committed 13 years ago.

“Canadians continue to step up in times of catastrophe and hardship – whether the front lines happen to be in their community, in this country, or somewhere else in the world – to contribute their time, energy and personal resources to improve the lives of those less fortunate. It is a cherished value that is at the very heart of what it means to be Canadian, a value that shows no signs of abating regardless of the challenge.”

Iza Calzado misses her dad

Joel Lamangan’s film & Allen Dizon shine in int’l. filmfest

Paolo Ballesteros now in stable condition Actress Iza Calzado admitted

she’s still missing her father, actor, director, and choreographer Lito Calzado who died three years ago due to liver cancer.

Iza is even sure that her late father is quietly helping her as she said she still feels his presence although he is no longer around to see how she’s getting acting opportunities and makes a steady rise in her showbiz career.

Currently the actress is doing the horror film Wenn V. Deramas’ “Maria Leonora Teresa.” However the film is not about the doll that has become as iconic as Guy and Pip in the

Actor-TV host Paolo Ballesteros is now in stable

condition at the Marikina Valley Medical Center.

The 31-year-old “Eat Bulaga” mainstay was rushed to the hospital on Monday night due to transient ischemic attack (mild stroke) which is characterized by the American Heart Association as a “warning stroke.” The actor said he is scheduled to have laboratory tests and that he is feeling better now.

Aside from hosting, Paolo has appeared in films, several

70s. Iza plays Faith Pardo, Zanjoe Marudo is Julio Sacdalan and Jodi Sta. Maria is Stella De Castro. The three parents mourned the deaths of their respective daughters, Maria, Leonora, and Teresa after a tragic incident during their field trip. A psychiatrist named Manolo (played by Chris Villanueva) helped them cope up with their loss by offering them life-sized dolls. The situation became tragic when the toys appear to be brought to life by an evil force.

TV shows and commercials, and product endorsements. He was also the Red Cross of the Philippines Image Youth Model. He is also known for his makeup transformations on Instagram.

Two Filipino artists were recently honored at the

ninth Harlem International Film Festival held last Sept. 14 at the Maysles Cinema in New York. Director Joel Lamangan’s Kamkam (Greed) won Best Film, while Allen Dizon was adjudged Best Actor for Magkakabaung (The Coffin Maker).

“Kamkam” tells the story of Johnny (Allen Dizon). Johnny and his family live in a poverty-trodden community Sitio Camcam, where he lords over the barangay in reckless corruption and impunity. The film also stars Jean Garcia, Sunshine Dizon, Jackie Rice, Elizabeth Oropesa, and Emilio Garcia, among others.

The Cinema Evaluation Board gave the movie a “Grade A” citing the film’s inspired performances, intelligent direction, relevant story, and technical executions.

“Magkakabaung” is the story of a neglectful father named Randy (Allen Dizon) who is eager to move on with his life but finds

it hard not only to have his eight year-old daughter’s body buried, but also to bury his guilt as the person behind his daughter’s death. The film also stars Gladys Reyes, Emilio Garcia, Chanel Latorre, Bor Ocampo and Felixia Dizon, under the direction of Jason Paul Laxamana.

In “Shrek The Musical,” Nyoy plays Donkey, Shrek’s best friend. He is also currently busy writing songs for his new album which he hopes to be released by the end of the year or early next year. He also performs in the Hard Rock Cafe in Manila and Baraberdie in Pasig, Metro Manila.

Also in the musical are Rycharde Everley as Shrek,

Shiela Valderrama as the slightly temperamental and neurotic character Princess Fiona, Jett Pangan as Lord Farquaad, Nel Gomez as Pinocchio and Carla Guevara-Laforteza as Dragon.

An entertaining, family-friendly show under the direction of Bobby Garcia, “Shrek The Musical,” opens Sept. 19and runs through Oct. 12 at the Meralco Theatre.

Two for City Councilor; three for school trusteeFive Filipino Canadians face the voters on October 22 civic election

Up to the last minute of filing the nomination papers to run for councilor

and school trustee respectively, only five kababayans, two for councilor; and three for school board trustee, have been declared as official candidates in the October 22, Wednesday, 2014 civic election.

The five compatriots who are now busy and occupied to work on their campaign in their respective wards include the incumbent councilor Mike Pagtakhan, a 12-year veteran, who is running for re-election in Pt. Douglas Ward; Anthony Ramos, a former trustee, will be campaigning face to face against Pagtakhan at the same ward, Meanwhile, there are three kababayans who are seeking votes to become school trustees and these include Cory Juan,an incumbent school trustee who is a re-electionist for the Seven Oaks School Division, Ward 2, facing other 6 candidates for four elected positions; Julie Holland Javier, a prominent Filipino volunteer, inside and outside of the Filipino community and a health care administrator, is facing one rival for one elected position in the Winnipeg School Division, Ward 6; and Jerry Medina, a prominent sport organizer and pre-plan counsellor, is running for school trustee in the Winnipeg School Division, Ward 5, with two other candidates for one elected position.

According to Mike Pagtakhan, Winnipeg needs a basketball sportsplex and he will work that the new council will recognize this project as a priority.

"Our Filipino community has made basketball so popular in Winnipeg and I envision that it is only matter of time before Winnipeg will have its own professional basketball team," said Mike Pagtakhan.

Another areas of concern is the rehabilitation of the 100-year old Arlington Bridge which has become a main route which connects the west and the north of the city. And he is not agreeable to a plan to close the bridge which is used by more than 15,000 vehicles per day, if it happens, it will create traffic congestion in McPhillips St. which will result for more delays. During his term, many playgrounds and parks had been constructed for his Ward and more projects will be completed, namely, Skateboard at the Freight House Community Centre and the new FIFA world class soccer field at Shaughnessy Park in time for the 2015 Women's FIFA World Cup.

As an incumbent councilor facing a political rival who is

a kababayan, "I want to wish Anthony all the best. However, Winnipeg will have a new mayor on October 22, and the four brand new councilors taking over the spots of four retiring councilors, I know that the new mayor and new councilors will rely on the guidance of the experienced councilors after the election. With my 12 years of experience, I bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise on how to get things done for our community. I feel that I am a tremendous advocate and a champion for Pt. Douglas and our City. In fact, I know that the best days are yet to come, and I look forward to building with everyone to make our community even more prosperous,"Mike Pagtakhan said.

In the Filipino community, Mike Pagtakhan had been instrumental, thru his initiative, in the construction of PCCM's SALAKOT Restaurant and the planting of various species of trees at the back of the building.

Anthony Ramos, a former school trustee, will be seeking

Cory Juan, an incumbent and has been a school trustee for 6 years at the Seven Oaks School Division, Ward 2, and the current vice-president of the Manitoba School Board Association, has been very active to strengthen the after-class Heritage Language Program and possibly to have in the future, a Filipino Bilingual School; and she is also involved in the promotion of history of every ethnic group in the community.

"Since Seven Oaks is a vibrant diverse community, everyone has a story to share their ethnicity. Therefore, promoting inter-generation education will enhance more community awareness, respect and sharing the richness of its diversity, "Cory Juan said.

Her vision for the children in the Seven Oaks School Division is to provide inclusive quality education to succeed. Cory Juan strongly says: "To achieve this, we as trustees must provide digital learning services and programs which will be needed to become the global citizens, for the students to succeed as independent learners and critical thinkers." She envisions a paradigm shift to work collaboratively and cooperatively to enhance our students to be fully equipped in hitting the learning pathways to meet the challenges of the 22nd Century.

Facing just one opponent, Julie Holland Javier, vice-president of MaCCFA, member of the Winnipeg City Equity Committee, one of the board members of the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival and Asian Heritage Society of Manitoba, and a health care professional, has strongly advocating empowerment among the students to achieve their full potential in a global society. Julie Holland Javier says: "To achieve this, we have to start the very foundation of education, good citizenship, effective shared responsibilities of parenting and of the school system: to prepare, to motivate, to encourage each student to reach his or her potential within the safe, caring and cooperative environment."

Javier also singles out a commitment to a quality education, in providing a learning environment and to foster the academic, physical and social growth of every student, thus establishing a very strong foundation for a life-long learning.

Jerry Medina

If one would like to know who is so passionate in basketball, known to be a major sport in the Filipino community, one of the names stands tall: Jerry Medina, IKAW founder and one of the organizers of basketball tournaments in the City, a pre-plan counselor, and one of the three candidates in Winnipeg School Division Ward 5, is strongly advocating numerous sports programs for the youth and sport-minded individuals. Medina says: "In my 22 years of experience, as a basketball commissioner, I have been involved in running a FREE community basketball league for the kids. We want our kids to be involved, and help other kids out of the street. I would like that the School Division to actively encourage greater community use of school facilities and gyms. We should not have empty gyms on weekdays, weekends, either for basketball, soccer or volleyball."

Medina, if elected as a school trustee, Ward 5, will encourage more people, more volunteers to be involved for the youth; more programs and sport activities, more available school facilities, gyms and community centre for the growing numbers of youth in the Winnipeg School Division, Ward 5.

"Lets get them active at a very young age," Medina said. "And I want the youth to feel safe and welcome, and more importantly, to feel that they are part of a caring community," Medina concluded.

The Republic of Adoboby Rod E. Cantiveros

Five kababayans to seek elective positions on October 22The political DNA is within

our blood and it is in this premise that five of our

kababayans (compatriots) have been running for the elective positions in the coming October 22 Civic Elections. And these five have the same drives, as shown by many former Filipino Winnipeggers who had won and lost in the federal, provincial and civic elections for the past 35, and who tried to test the political water in Winnipeg, a hotbed of the Filipino politicians who want to leave a mark in the federal, provincial and civic political trails.

In the coming Fall civic election, we will encounter the lawn signs, we will receive fancy and simple flyers, we will attend fund raising efforts, and we will help decide, if we, the voters will cast our vote to elect our kababayans. In their campaigns, they need dedicated volunteers and canvassers to help in the distribution of flyers, in setting up

the lawn signs, telephone callers, and most specially, your financial donations are appreciated.

In the City councilor category, we have the incumbent councilor of Pt. Douglas Ward, Mike Pagtakhan, who for 12 years have been actively involved in the various communities and have convincing records of achievements inside his ward and in the Filipino community;and Anthony Ramos, a former trustee, who is running against Mike Pagtakhan in the same ward. With two Filipino Canadians running in the same ward, the probability of splitting the votes is real,

In the school trustee positions, there are three kababayans who are running in the different school division wards. Cory Juan, an incumbent school trustee, Seven Oaks School Division, Ward 2, has been serving her community for six years. She has initiated various program in the heritage language classes; and she has promoted

an active program on ethnicity and advocated the employment of visible minorities in all the departments.

Julie Holland Javier, a prominent volunteer inside and outside of the Filipino community and one of the MaCCFA active fund-raisers for calamity fund, and a healthcare professional, has proactive plans for the education of the youth:empowerment of students to achieve their full potential in a global society and shared responsibilities of parenting and of the school system, to reach his or her potential with the safe, caring and cooperative environment.

One of the most passionate promoter of sport development among the youth is Jerry Medina, who for more than 22 years as founder and commissioner of IKAW, has been active in the community by providing sport activities among the youth. He has been a volunteer running FREE community basketball leagues and he wants that the Winnipeg School Division's facilities and gyms to be opened on weekdays, weekends, either for basketball, soccer or volleyball. He wants other kids out of the street. "Lets get them active at a very young age," Medina said.

We need to extend our helps to our kababayans who are seeking elective positions in this coming October 22, Wednesday, Civic election. And we have to salute them for taking the challenge to serve our growing community and the wonderful City of Winnipeg.

Homegrown LeadershipElectCindy GilroyFor City Councillor Daniel McIntyre WardCindyGilroy.com

Cindy Gilroy Expains why she is running for City Council in Daniel MnIntyre WardI grew up in the west end of Daniel McIntyre and like much of my generation I am now raising my children here. I'm a proud west ender and I want my children to grow up in the same strong, safe and vibrant community I

did. Growing up here gives me a sense of the communities and what people want from our city council.

I am concerned about how things have been done at city hall and I think we can do better.

Projects like the new fire hallls and police station should be managed differently and basic services like streets and sidewalks need to be maintained better. As a school trustee I was open and accountable and I will be the same city hall.

This election is important. The new Mayor will need support to make change. In 2010 I came within 108 votes of helping make that change and help make Winnipeg a safe and vibrant city and Daniel McIntyre a strong, safe and vibrant community.

I worked in the family business and being a school trustee has prepared me for dealing with

public funds in an open and transparent way. If elected, I will use my experience, leadership abilities and best judgment in the best interest of everyone in Daniel McIntyre and I hope you will consider supporting me.

Bison wrangles long-term talent in Filipino community

Rod and Rudy Mina have a few things in common.

The two professional heavy-duty technicians share more than a job title and last name. The brothers also tell similar stories of immigrating to a country brimming with opportunities, planting their roots in Manitoba and building what came to be lifelong careers at Bison Transport.

In the 1970’s, Rudy’s wife sponsored his move to Manitoba from Saudi Arabia. He was out of work for over a year before a former employer referred him to apply at Bison. That was 22 years ago, where he began working as one of the sole technicians for a modest fleet of 15 trucks – Bison now has 1,400 tractors and 4000 trailers.

“Bison is the best company I’ve worked for, and that’s why I’ve stayed so long,” says Rudy.

Rod juggled multiple jobs before being referred to the transportation company by his older brother. He got his first taste at Bison working as a part-time technician, and soon saw long-term opportunities within the company. He later made a full-time commitment to Bison, and has yet to take a backwards glance after 19 dedicated years.

On an average day, Rudy and Rod ensure Bison’s fleet

is fully maintained and safe to drive by conducting preventative maintenance and repairs.

“We work in a clean environment with a good maintenance program,” says Rudy.

The standard of care invested into maintaining the company’s vehicles explains how they’ve earned the name North America’s Safest Fleet. Their title is recognized by the TCA (Truckload Carrier’s Association), one of which they’ve proudly held for the last eight consecutive years.

Bison also offers technicians like Rod and Rudy consistent training to stay up-to-date on their industry’s standard practices and new processes.

“They give you everything here,” says Rod. “Technicians can come from the Philippines and learn very easily at Bison. They’ll help train you and even send you to school.”

Employment opportunities at the company are also fulfilled through apprenticeships. The brothers have referred numerous

friends who began as apprentices, and now hold fulfilling full-time jobs.

The frequency of referrals at Bison is no coincidence. Over 50% of new hires at Bison are referred, which is why they have many long-term success stories like Rod and Rudy’s.

“The people here are like brothers,” says Rudy. “Filipino newcomers should try applying at Bison. It’s a great place to work!”

Do you see a future working for a team that boasts one of Canada’s 10 Most Admired Corporate Cultures?

As a thriving company invested in cutting-edge innovation and technology, Bison Transport is currently looking to expand their team of heavy duty technicians and professional drivers. Employment opportunities for family or friends currently in Manitoba or the Philippines are available!

This time, I thought that I might briefly discuss a couple of issues regarding

investment strategy.A constant theme that I

have heard over the years is the advantage of investing outside Canada, especially it seems, in the United States. I wouldn’t say it never makes sense to have investments in other countries and, in fact, it often makes sense to diversify outside Canada, but be careful and make sure you understand the risks.

The important thing, as in all investments, is to be knowledgeable about all the factors that you are dealing with, whether investing in Canada or elsewhere. And when you invest in other countries there are additional considerations.

For example, several years ago an assistant and I were doing a year- end review at a client’s office and my rather shaken assistant came in to see me. Our client, a small business owner, had been accumulating funds for a major planned expansion and his investment advisor had suggested U S securities, usually a rather safe investment. Unfortunately, at the time the client acquired the investment the Canadian dollar

was trading in the low seventy cents to the U S dollar and rose thereafter steadily to the mid eighty cents. The relative change in value of the American dollar compared to the Canadian dollar resulted in a loss for our client of almost $60,000.

It was made easier several years ago for Canadians, even in their RRSPs, to invest outside Canada. Not only being knowledgeable about the effect of currency fluctuations, but also, it is necessary to understand the political and economic environment of the country where you are investing. China and Russia or even the European Common Market may provide a lot of opportunities, but individual decisions made by companies in other countries may be based on factors and economic realities different from those of a Canadian company. Undoubtedly, Russian and Chinese companies are affected by decisions made at the political level. Even in the United States, not surprisingly, they have different tax laws that can affect your investment or mean that income such as dividends, capital gains and inherences will be treated differently in Canada, than if they were Canadian

investments. In the last couple of years political and economic decisions in Chile and other South American countries have affected investments in mining and oil.

Risk is always present when making any investment and you should decide what a tolerable risk is for you. You can rely on a professional advisor, but I do feel more comfortable when I have a grasp of the level of the risk, even when I have professional advice. Remember, it is you that will be losing the money, not the advisor and that applies even if the shares are held in a mutual fund. A good example of this is Citigroup. It was trading in the $40 range in October of 2007 and by February 2009 was trading around $2.00. Normally considered a reliable investment with good dividends, Citigroup and other banks in the U S suffered huge losses. Some advisors were recommending investing in Citigroup when the stock fell to $25 to $30.

It is a tough world out there and you have to be careful and aware. Take care.

‘Ng’ versus ‘Nang’On Filipino Grammar

Any language is easy to use by its native speaker only if it is being used

for conversational purposes. However, when it is used formally, proper grammar is required; and this surely poses a big challenge even to native speakers of that language.

Having said that, I am differentiating the Filipino words ‘ng’ and ‘nang’ from each other. Orally, these words are interchangeable; after all, they are homophones of each other [A homophone is a word that is pronounced the same as another word but differs in meaning, and may differ in spelling; ‘ng’ and ‘nang’ are homophones of each other]. However, when used in written form, they are not interchangeable; meaning, you should use them accordingly and properly.

NgBasically, ‘ng’ is the exact

counterpart of the English preposition ‘of.’ As examples,1.She is the leader of the group. [Siya ang pinuno ng grupo.]2.This is the beginning of the movie. [Ito ang simula ng pelikula.]

In the Filipino language, ‘ng’ is used also to conjunct the verb to its object. For example,She bought a new car.

Translating that sentence in Filipino would require the Filipino conjunction ‘ng’ to conjunct the verb (bought [bumili]) to its object (a new car [bagong sasakyan]). Therefore, Siya ay bumili ng bagong sasakyan.

Nang On the other hand, the Filipino

word ‘nang’ is the counterpart of the English conjunction when.As examples,1.I was at school when the visitors arrived. [Nasa eskwela ako nang dumating ang mga bisita.]2.Christine was crying in pain when I saw her. [Si Christine ay umiiyak nang makita ko siya.]

In the Filipino language, ‘nang’ is used also to conjunct the verb to the adverb modifying it.For example, Don’t run too fast.

Translating that sentence in Filipino would require the Filipino conjunction ‘nang’ to conjunct the verb (run [tumakbo]) to the adverb

modifying it (too fast [sobrang bilis]).Therefore,

Wag kang tumakbo nang sobrang bilis.Note: In Filipino, ‘conjunction’ may translate to “pangatnig.”

The Last LeafWhen in conversational

mode, the application of grammar in perhaps any language is not really strict or necessary as long as the idea or message the speaker is conveying is clear and

understandable. This is what we may refer to as the communicative approach to language.

However, when the format is written, especially for formal purposes (for example: thesis, articles for publication, instructional materials, or formal letters) adherence to proper grammar becomes a requirement. And this applies also to the Filipino language (or any language, for that matter).

PAHALANG PABABA

Good fortune shows up for you when you make the effort in the areas of romance and creative activity. Studying and travel may also be on your mind, which might entice you to look for more information. Drift, dream, and do things that nurture your soul.

A passionate encounter might capture your imagination early in this period as thoughts about a certain person perhaps become obsessive. Being too premature here could result in embarrassment, so bide your time. You’ll want to explore the potential for increasing your earnings, and you’re willing to move out of your comfort zone to do so. Later, try to avoid lending money - you may not get it back.

The combination of borrowed ideas and natural genius could give your place a delightful makeover. When it comes to romance, an instant attraction might be tempting, but there’s a chance it may not last. Later, issues associated with your job or career could divert your attention away from your partner.

Your intuition could conflict with the facts in a key situation, making it hard to choose the best path ahead. But if you can adopt a fresh perspective, you might find the right answer was there all along just waiting to be noticed.

Work and play conflict as the focus shifts. You may prefer pleasurable options to knuckling down to the daily grind. However, the offer of extra money might be enough to entice you to work long hours. A love adventure may be just what you need to boost your mood and brighten current circumstances.

Will intense feelings tempt you to dive headlong into a romance? The current climate suggests it’s possible even though deep down you know better. Meanwhile, you may zip into action on the home front, eager to get down to some DIY projects like redecorating or perhaps something bigger. If you’re renting, this might be the time you decide to buy some property.

The more time you take to understand how you feel about a situation the better. Regular meditation and dream work can let you know how things sit with your subconscious and if your conscious mind is in alignment with it. With this inside information you should be able to make a more informed decision. Be careful when signing important documents or saving files on the computer.

A very positive influence can make all the difference to your career situation. This is the time to put in the hard work that can lead to some jaw-dropping opportunities. With just a little effort you can reap big rewards over this week and next. What’s more, if you don’t succeed the first time, keep trying.

An opportunity to net a lucrative contract could be yours early on. Don’t waste time wondering whether or not to take it, as it won’t be around for long. In addition, if you’re after action and adventure, you can have plenty of both. The offer of a trip could lead to some exciting opportunities if you can be willing to move outside your comfort zone.

This period will brings a chance to collaborate on projects that may be hard work but also lucrative. Avoid giving away too much personal information, however, as you may regret it later (even though you might normally trust this person).

There is certainly a positive focus on your social sector, encouraging you to move in new circles that can bring positive opportunities your way. The cosmos is enticing you out of any rut you may have been in and pushing you to embrace a wider circle of friends and associates. Conserve your energy over the weekend - take the time to recharge.

A nice break from routine would do you a world of good and could quite possibly prove to be lucky. See what friends have on their agendas, and don’t hesitate to join in if it sounds like fun. It’s all systems go regarding a key ambition or important career goal. This is the time to plan for success and then take baby steps to achieve it.

Canadian Museum for Human Rights ready to welcome the worldBy Rod E. Cantiveros

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is finally a reality. It was a dream of a

passionate philanthropist, a man of vision, a man who had given back to the community by building a museum which would become a strong foundation in educating the world about the struggle for human rights around the world.

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights will be opening its doors to the public on Saturday, September 20, 2014. It will be a time to enter and explore the labyrinths of the minds of the man, who in April 17, 2003, announced the ambitious, yet doable project which would be the only museum outside of the capital region. Israel "Issy" Asper, a consummate jazz lover, a media mogul who started from a simple beginning in Minnedosa, a dedicated and hard-working father of three successful children. Israel Asper passed away in October 7, 2003, leaving the continuity of the project to in the hands of his daughter, Gail Asper.

A decade after his death, Issy Asper's grand ambition is standing tall as a new historic landmark;

towering into the Winnipeg skyline with iconic significance; engaging intellectual discussions on the contents, on the funding, on the management, most of all, on the relevance and importance of the museum.

Museum contents had become well-known contentious issues but along the lines of prominence and importance, there will be 11 galleries showcasing various world events when human rights had been in the lowest stratum in reality and in our pervasive consciousness. These events include the Holocaust, Holodomor, the plight of Canada's First nations, and other historic events which defined a clear violation of the basic human rights. As Angela Cassie, museum's director of communications, explains: "The purpose of the museum is not to be a memorial for the suffering of different groups, but to be a learning experience for visitors for all ages. It will be a "museum of ideas" not just a museum of past events."

Fortunately, there will be a Philippine content in the museum, as part of the upcoming exhibition space will feature Dr. Jose Rizal, a

Filipino national hero. The project has been silently worked out for many years by the Rosalinda Natividad-Cantiveros Foundation; and the museum’s initiative to feature “Comfort Women” which was finalized when Lola Fadencia David, an 80-year old survivor, was invited by the officials of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights to visit Winnipeg last October 2014 and to tell her personal story about the suffering of the comfort women during the 2nd World War in Asia."Ysabel: Comfort Woman", a play written by yours truly and directed by Joy Laud Lazo and with a cast of local actors (Tony and Letty Antonio, Gloria Magpali, Duchess Cayetano, and Mark Arquero) will be restaged at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in the future. Bombers lose Labour Day Classic & Banjo Bowl, Willy injured against Lions

The Bombers lost the Labour Day Classic in Regina as the Roughriders won the

game with a game-winning drive to beat the Bombers 35-30 at Mosaic Stadium. The win marked the 10th straight Labour Day Classic win by the Riders.

The prairie rivalry continued with the Banjo Bowl in Winnipeg. Home field advantage and the fans at Investors Group Field unfortunately did not help the

Bombers as the Riders lost the Banjo Bowl 30-24.

Even with the Rider's Darian Durrant out of the game due to an injury in the 3rd quarter, Drew Willy and Bombers didn't have luck or enough time on their side during two 4th quarter drives to battle back. Two interceptions in the dying minutes of the game sealed the loss for the Bombers.

In Week 12, the Bombers travelled to Vancouver to take on

the BC Lions. The bitter 26-9 loss to the Lions was especially tough as Drew Willy was injured during the first half and remained out of the game due to an injury to his throwing shoulder. The injury is week to week and with the bye-week, Willy's satus for the Bombers next game (Saturday, September 27 vs Hamilton at Investors Group Field) is questionable.

Phivolcs says Mayon Volcano on alert level 3The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Monday night placed Mayon Volcano on alert level 3, which means that magma is at the crater and that hazardous eruption is possible within weeks.

Phivolcs director Renato Solidum said the volcano’s current activity include lava coming down from Mayon’s crater. Volcanologist Ed Laguerta said huge glowing lava fragments and super-hot boulders are rolling down from Mayon's crater late Monday, which could be seen

What’s in a name?A pinay’s guide to getting hitched

As a newlywed, there was one major obstacle I had to face immediately after

signing the dotted line.To some, the choice comes

easy. But to me, deciding on whether or not I should retain my last name was an unbearably difficult decision. Who knew a few little letters could bear so much weight?

As a professional pinay who’s one half of an interracial couple, there are a few reasons why I was on the fence. I prodded myself with many (silly) questions. If I change my last name, will I lose part of my Filipino identity? Will my professional connections recognize me with a new last name? Why don’t I just join the hyphenation club?

It’s not a sore thumb that comes to mind when first getting hitched, but ultimately has a lasting and permanent effect. And don’t even get me started on the paperwork.

Whether you choose to keep or change your last name is a decision that’s entirely yours to make. We live in a modern society

from as far as 12 kilometers away.Albay Gov. Joey Salceda

ordered the evacuation of up to 12,000 residents within an 8-kilometer radius of the volcano's crater. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said 51,625 people in 65 villages have been affected.

Mayon Volcano is a popular tourist destination because of its near-perfect cone. It is considered as the most active volcano in the Philippines and has erupted 50 times in the last 500 years

where traditional practices have progressed immensely, and any choice that feels right is and should be acceptable.

My only advice to newlyweds and soon-to-be brides is this: no matter what you decide to do, never forget who you are and the stories connected with your maiden name and family history. The memories will live on whether you choose to live on as Reyes, or decide to delve in and join the Smiths.
