Now Open: Winnipeg’s first Community Food Centre

The NorWest Co-op Community Food Centre is the first of its kind in

Western Canada. It will be the fifth Community Food Centre in Canada, joining similar organizations in Ontario and a national movement that also includes developing Community Food Centres in Dartmouth, NS and Calgary, all of which strive to increase access to healthy food in low-income communities and provide respectful spaces that bring people together to grow, cook, share and advocate for good food for all.

The NorWest Co-op Community Food Centre will provide the diverse multicultural population of Winnipeg’s Inkster neighbourhood with a much-needed community space where people of all ages and backgrounds can gather around healthy food.

Many area residents struggle with unemployment, poverty, chronic disease, food Insecurity and social isolation (see Fast Facts on p. 3). The Community Food Centre will provide people of all ages with greater access to healthy food through free community meals, community gardens, cooking classes and groups, education programs for kids, peer advocacy, community engagement and volunteering opportunities. The Centre will extend the existing primary care and social services currently provided by NorWest Co-op Community Health.

The NorWest Co-op Community Food Centre hosts a weekly Filipino Family Cooking Group every Saturday which teach healthy twists on traditional Filipino recipes. To register, phone Abby at 204-806-3972.

Goodbye Winter, Hello Spring!


In a matter of days, the Red River Mutual Trail was officially closed on Monday, March 9 due to several days of warm

weather that turned the 6.1kms river trail into a trail of slush. While the official start of spring is a couple days away, that didn't stop Winnipegers from throwing away the winter coats heading outdoors to enjoy the sunny and warm weather. This included Shooters Family Golf Centre opening last weekend to greet avid golfers with buckets of golf balls.

Helsinki, "The White City of the North"

With just one short rainy and sunny August day in Helsinki, the

northernmost European capital of Finland, you can't miss a city by the sea with its 180,000 islands spread on a beautiful archipelago and its most important neo-classical and contemporary monuments as well as its all-year-round indoor winter wonderland.

Often called "the white city of the north" due to its many buildings that are constructed of locally produced light-coloured granite, Helsinki (Swedish: Helsinfors) is one of the coldest cities in the world as it does not receive sunshine for about 51 consecutive days during winter. Won't this be a sufficient

reason why Winnipegers need not complain about our frigid winters? Because we are not alone although our beloved city ranks first on the planet for the lowest average temperature in a year!

Our guided walking tour of this vibrant seaside metropolis commences from the Senate Square dominated by four buildings - the Helsinki Cathedral, the Government Palace (executive office of the national government), the main building of the University of Helsinki, and the National Library of Finland. Also on the square is the oldest stone house in the city, the historic Sederholm house built in 1757 owned by Helsinki's then-richest

merchant Johan Sederholm. Also known as St. Nicholas Church, the Helsinki Cathedral with its tall, green dome surrounded by four smaller domes is the most famous and most photographed building in Helsinki.

The tour continues on foot to the Market Place that provides a festive atmosphere along the city bay where we have free time for souvenir shopping and tasting local summer berries. Travelling through the city we enjoy seeing other unique monuments of Helsinki like the Uspenski Cathedral, the Parliament, Old Market Hall, the National Museum of Finland, the 1952 Summer Olympic Stadium, and the Central Railway Station. Helsinki is renowned not only for its romantic and classical buildings but also for its contemporary architecture of latest design innovations such as Finlandia Hall and the well-known Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art which has earned Helsinki the world design capital for 2012.

Under the heavy rain we trek to th famous Temppeliaukion Church ("Rock Church"), a unique circular church quarried out of solid granite rock, covered

with a dome lined with copper and supported on the rock walls by concrete beams. Natural light pierces through the glasses between the dome and rock walls. The church is not only a Lutheran place of worship - it is also often used for concerts because of its excellent acoustics.

Not to be missed is the stainless steel sculpture resembling organ pipes, the Sibelius Monument, a monument to the world-famous composer Jean Sibelius located in a public park of the affluent Toolo district.

Last but not the least is the famous Suomenlinna Fortification Islands, a major monument of military architecture included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The sea fortress, a mecca for summer excursions by the locals, offers outdoor picnic, walking and swimming areas, a visitor centre, restaurants, and galleries. TRIVIA: Helsinki has the highest cellphone-to-resident ratios in the world. The world's leading manufacturer of cell phones, Nokia, is based in Finland.

Angler Young Angler (AYA) Ice Fishing Derby

The annual AYA derby took place on Saturday, March 14 near Chalet Beach

Road on Lake Winnipeg. Well over 1000 anglers competed for the top prize of a Lund boat, motor, and trailer valued at $12,228. Walking around the derby site, it wasn’t hard to find kababayan participants amongst the maze of fisher people. I spoke with Raymond Tan who was still looking for a bite with less than an hour to go in the derby. “I’m using this new Rapala lure that I bought online. Sana naman may kumagat”. Rolly Chico fished the event with his son Mark. Although neither of them had caught a fish yet, they were in a great mood as Rolly had just won the 50/50 raffle draw, “I plan to spend some of the $2,540 on new fishing gear!”

Altogether there were twenty-five fish caught and weighed-in. Sixty prizes were awarded which included a host of Rapala portable shacks, augers, and sleds.

Cabela’s and Lund Boats among others donated fabulous prizes as well. The winning fish was a fat 6.71lb greenback caught by George Matte. Talking to George after, he stated that he caught the walleye on a green jig with a live minnow.

Angling notes:The annual March Madness

fishing frenzy is in full flight as anglers have been absolutely hammering the greenback walleye on Lake Winnipeg. This is also the best time of year to target Master Angler sized northern pike in the Whiteshell or Nopiming. Large schools of perch can be tracked down on Lake Manitoba or the Shoal Lakes in the Interlake. Warm weather this March has initiated an earlier than usual melt on our local bodies of water. The general fishing season in Southern Manitoba closes at 11:59pm on March 31. Please exercise caution and common sense if you are going on any excursions the rest of this month.

What if P-Noy resigned?

In the aftermath of the Mamasapano Massacre, a groundswell is rising for the

resignation of President Benigno “P-Noy” Aquino III. This is reminiscent of the time leading to the uprising in 2001 when a citizens’ movement snowballed into another people power revolution, which came to fruition when the generals of the Armed Forces of the Philippine withdrew their support for then President Joseph “Erap” Estrada.

Known as “EDSA Dos,” it was a coup d’état disguised as a people power revolution, which many believed was orchestrated by an elite group who wanted Erap’s vice president, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, to take over the presidency. Indeed, if EDSA Dos was considered a “revolution,” then it was a revolution of the elite – the oligarchs of the land. And true enough; as soon as Gloria took over, the oligarchs placed their people in key government positions. Indeed, EDSA Dos was all about power.

Gloria’s usurpation of the presidency in January 2001 positioned her to run for president in 2004, which gave her the “power of the incumbent.” Elected amidst charges of election cheating, Gloria was in power for nine and a half years, which made her longest serving president since 1986, when EDSA 1 deposed the dictator Ferdinand E. Marcos. As we all know now, Gloria’s reign was the most corrupt since the time of Marcos. People power

Although the Resign Movement was gaining momentum, it didn’t reach a critical mass that could have ignited another people power revolution. And after three people power revolutions – EDSA 3 was a failed attempt to bring Erap back to power after Gloria was sworn into office – the people are now tired of “people power” revolutions. So what we’re seeing now is a different tact to bring down the president: the use of the media. And this includes social media, which in essence is another form of “people power.” But is social media enough to put pressure on P-Noy to resign? Or does it need “boots on the ground,” that is, another EDSA-type people power uprising?

But regardless of what the people – or those behind them --

would employ to pursue a regime change, it has all the trappings of a coup d’état. The only difference is that the “players” this time around have a pinkish taint of anti-Americanism, who accuse P-Noy of being a puppet of the Americans. Ironically, the beneficiary of EDSA 1 – P-Noy’s mother, Cory Aquino – was the Left’s chosen leader. However, the two heroes of the revolt against Marcos’ totalitarian rule were his own henchmen, Minister of Defense Juan Ponce and Enrile and Vice Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Fidel V. Ramos -- a cousin of Marcos – who were both staunchly pro-American.

Regime changeAnd just like the previous

EDSA revolutions, the objective of this attempt to bring down P-Noy is regime change. And this is where it gets real fuzzy; the transition could be anything but orderly.

If the EDSA Dos scenario were followed, then the sitting Vice President, Jejomar “Jojo” Binay, would assume the presidency. But unlike Gloria – who had the commitment of the military’s top brass and then Supreme Court Chief Justice Hilario Davide Jr. to install her as “president” instead of “acting president,” which was what Erap was assured of – Binay might have difficulty convincing Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno to install him even as “acting president.” However, Binay could choose anybody – even a barangay captain – to install him as “president” and that would be it. Déjà vu

But what if P-Noy resigned? The constitution says that the Vice President takes over the presidency when it’s vacated. And this is where the anti-Aquino forces differ in strategy. Some say that Binay would make an excellent president, but others say, “He’d be the most corrupt president in the history of the country!” More corrupt than Gloria? “Absolutely!”

Imagine this: Gloria had only her husband Mike doing all the “dirty” work during her presidency. But Jojo Binay has a family dynasty – to date, five members -- that’s too deep into politics, four of whom have been accused or charged of graft and corruption; some of which dates back three decades ago when

Cory appointed Jojo as officer-in-charge – and eventually elected mayor -- of Makati City. And with Jojo taking over the presidency, it makes one wonder what would the limit be; that is, how far would his family go in accumulating ill-gotten wealth? Or, would it be like a high rollers’ Texas hold ‘em poker game: no limit? And to think that Jojo would be in power for eight and a half years, there is no limit to what he and his family could do if they were to engage in corruption in a scale far greater than all the allegations of corruption against them when they held unrestrained power in Makati City.

To prevent Binay from ascending to the presidency if P-Noy resigned, the Resign Movement proposed the formation of a “National Transformation Council” (NTC), which would take over the rein of government and ignore the constitutional presidential line of succession. But this would look like a coup d’état, which can only succeed with the full support – and participation -- of the military. And this begs the question: who would constitute the National Transformation Council? Right now, it’s anybody’s guess.What if Binay won?

The organizers were saying that the NTC would consist of persons with the following qualities: honesty, integrity, credibility, and efficiency. The question is: where do you find them? And what is the likelihood that it would be filled with opportunistic individuals who belong to the rich and powerful elite. It’s déjà vu all over again… and it could be worse.

Then there is the problem of convincing the international community – particularly the U.S. – that it was not a military takeover. But that would be hard to sell. Anything that comes close to a military coup d’état could compel the U.S. to withhold financial and military aid to the country.

It’s becoming apparent that forcing P-Noy to resign and replace him with a junta wouldn’t dwell too well with the Filipino people, many of whom have horrendous memories of the Marcos dictatorship. Leaderless and rudderless, the Resign Movement is beginning to show cracks on its façade.

The challenge facing the nation is to find an honest and incorruptible leader. There are a few elected men and women who have excelled in the performance of their electoral mandates. Anyone of them could be a better president than Binay. But can they beat Binay who has been campaigning for president since he was elected vice president in 2010?

The question to be asked then shouldn’t be “What if P-Noy resigned?” but it should be “What if Binay won?”

Grateful to the Breakfast Club (part 2 of 2)

The warm welcome of the friends and acquaintances I have made in the Filipino

community helped me forget the dreadful cold of winter…

I cherish my conversations with Kaka Rey Pacheco about Philippine history, most particularly the Marcos era, because he personally knew a lot about a number of leading personalities during that time. I love reading Kaka Rey’s biting articles and insightful poems because of his lyrical style of writing. He also shared to me that the first Chair of the Breakfast Council (est. 1997–2000) was Ric Dela Cruz, followed by Bob Gabuna (2001–2002), Kuya Ted Marcelino (2003–2005), and Kuya Fred De Villa (2006–present). On the subjects of Theology of Liberation and Church History, Fr. Greg Sevillo is the person to have good discussions with; on Filipino Social Democracy, Kuya Vic Pao and Mar Cadiz; on Philosophy and Conservative Ideology, Kuya Mar Javier. Kuya Fred was the one who shared to me the history of PAM (Philippine Association of Manitoba) and the beginning of PCCM (Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba).

Another person whom I could not forget to mention is Tatay Joe “Doc” Inot, who is also a musician and a great drummer. He used to play with Tito Ted Ombrog at community parties. I had the

chance to watch them perform, and I found them amazing. Kuya Bert Nagutom is another, who told me that he used to be a SIKARAN/Arnis instructor and that he used to play as an extra in Philippine movies. But the most important experience I guess that he shared was his Trade Union experience in the Philippines. I listened attentively when he shared his NAFLU (National Federation of Labour Unions) days of standing up for the rights of Filipino workers. I also want to add to the list Kuya Tem Chavez, who is a close friend of Manong Popoy Gomez. Kuya Tem is fond of sharing not only jokes and funny stories but also practical insights on how to survive here in Winnipeg.

Aside from the political and social discussions I had with members of the Breakfast Club, the Scripture was also a controversial topic. Theological orientations were expressed at times. I remember exchanges with Kuya Manuel “Boy” Negado, Bro. Bert, Kuya Nilo Almodal, and Jared Moran, an El Salvadorian who also wanted to share his perspective. There were convergences and contradictions but, in the final analysis, everybody goes home learning and unlearning something.

At the Breakfast Club, we used to have discussions about the old country and what should be done to make it progressive. We discussed the massive

corruption and how to end it. We made comparative analysis between life in Canada and in the Philippines. Discussions ranging from left-wing politics to the right of the political spectrum elicited provocative ideas and opinions. The Breakfast Club also became a forum for coming up with ideas on how to fundraise for the victims of the different natural calamities that hit the Philippines. Forums were organized on immigration issues and have successfully lobbied for the reduction of the landing fee, otherwise known as head tax. Kuya Fred De Villa also told me that they used to invite experts to discuss particular issues.

Another major achievement of the Breakfast Club, according to Kuya Fred, is the story of nurses hired from the Philippines. Back then, a group would go to the Philippines to give test to nurse; those who passed were hired right away. The Breakfast Club protested this initiative, citing the fact that there were about forty-five licensed nurses originating from the Philippines who were already working in garment factories in Manitoba. They pushed for the prioritization and consideration of these professionals. This initiative became successful.

There was indeed a mix of clashing perspectives, jokes, laughter, fun, and grief. I heeded the advice given to me. I listened and learned until such time that they asked me to share my thoughts. Well friends, one day all of us will become seniors and we will take their place. What are Canadian employers looking for? This was the question

Rita had on her mind when she visited Manitoba Start to find out how to get a job in Winnipeg.

Rita had arrived from India three months earlier where she had been a manager at a textile company. She was interested in working in hospitality or sales and went to Manitoba Start for support in developing her career plan and professional goals.

In 2014, the Canadian Association of Career Educators and Employers (CACEE) surveyed employers and recruiters to find out what employers want (CACEE 2014 Campus Recruitment and Benchmark Survey). Rita’s career coach shared some information from the survey during an employment preparation workshop.Employers Emphasize Soft Skills

Employers want to hire people who work hard, communicate well with others, and identify solutions. According to CACEE (2014), the five soft skills employers prefer most are:1.Problem-solving skills2.Communication skills (written and verbal)3.Teamwork skills4.Analytical abilities5.Strong work ethic

Rita was glad to hear this. She was a hard worker and had great interpersonal skills. However, she wanted to improve her language skills and signed up for English classes.Employers Highlight Digital Technology Skills

Employers are looking for hires who have good computer skills. More and more, recruiters use digital technologies to find new skilled talent. LinkedIn is one of the main platforms Canadian

employers use to advertise new job opportunities. Recruiters are also more likely to consider job applications when the resume and cover letter are tailored to the specific job requirements the organization has posted.

After the workshop, Rita created a LinkedIn account where she listed her skills, work experience, and education. She also signed up for the free Microsoft Office refresher course offered at Manitoba Start to improve her computer knowledge and keyboarding speed.Employers Value Experience

According to CACEE, on average, employers are looking for 1.5–2 years of work experience for entry-level positions. Work experience is often a stronger consideration than academic credentials for many employers.

To build Canadian work experience while looking for a long-term job, Rita decided to volunteer as an administrative assistant.

After Rita completed her language training, she successfully applied for a position as a front desk hotel clerk. Rita was excited to take this first step towards her long-term goal of being a manager in the hotel industry.

This term simply refers to the tendency of a person to feel envious or jealous of others because of their achievements or accomplishments. While we can claim that this tendency is universal and may be common among many people, the difference lays on how each individual process this feeling and control or manage it. Some people may turn this into something positive by viewing it as admiration that may inspire them instead into becoming better persons. But then, of course, there are also people who couldn’t handle their feelings of envy, which cause them to do bad things like negatively criticizing the people of their envy, discredit them or, worse, fabricate lies and gossips that may result in destroying the reputation, credibility, or social standing of the people whom they feel jealous of.

Having described the habit, it now becomes clear that crab mentality is not exclusive to the Filipino culture. Crab mentality is simply a Filipino term for “uncontrollable feelings of envy.” And any person—whatever the race or nationality—may be prone to it. It is just a matter of how to control or manage such negative emotions and turn them into something positive for one’s betterment.

Therefore, yes—while there may be lots of Filipinos who have crab mentality, there are obviously many Filipinos who do not; or at the least, could manage such feelings and turn them into something positive for the goodness of themselves and others. And because feelings of envy and jealousy are basic human emotions, they may be

observed in any other cultures as well. So, crab mentality is, after all, not a Filipino trait; it is a universal trait shared by people of any nationality who could not handle or control their envy for the success of others.

Now, the next question is, where does the very term ‘crab mentality’ come from? Why is the term common in the Filipino culture?The Origin of the Term Crab Mentality

Actually, ‘crab mentality’ came from the vernacular term “talangka” mentality. ‘Talangka’ (shore crabs or river crabs) are small species of crabs that are common in the Philippines. Because they are relatively inexpensive, these crabs have become a staple food of the common Filipino. It may be prepared or cooked in the same way one cooks lobsters. Now, the way these crabs are being sold in the market—they are placed in big containers out of where the crabs try to escape. The action of the crabs—using their pincers and legs—escaping out of the containers by crawling onto the sides and on top of each other, pulling one another down, as if trying to outdo or outrun each other—is the very action that has been used to illustrate a person’s

tendency to destroy the reputation or discredit others.Sa Madaling Salita

Nasa sa indibidwal na iyan kung paano niya gagawing positibo ang pakiramdam na iyan. Imbes na siraan niya ang ibang tao e mas mabuti na gamitin niya ang tagumpay ng kapwa para magsikap at magtiyaga siyang makamit ang sariling tagumpay na ang ginagamit ay sariling kakayanan at abilidad.




The Successful OPM Legends

The concert OPM Legends was successful in many ways. The hard work, goals,

and vision of the producers, Dennis Castañeda and Mary Jean Aromin, plus the entire production team paid off. The whole event was presented well. The venue, Club Regent Event Centre, was classy and audience friendly. The parking space was very available, accessible, and convenient for everyone. The main acts were billeted in the same hotel, so it was comfortable and convenient for them—no need to transport them from one place to another.

During the concert itself, the audience turnout was relatively positive, about 80 to 85% of the projected attendance was achieved. Everyone seemed to enjoy the performances not only of the main acts but also of the show openers.

Singer/songwriter Levy Abad performed two of his original songs that many in the audience were already familiar with, particularly “Dito sa Winnipeg.” Came next was haLf man haLf eLf, which dished out three well-arranged songs each of which wowed the crowd because of the incorporation of various musical instruments and the stage presence of the group’s members. What became a crowd favorite was the rendition of Yano’s “Esem,” which featured an accordion and violin not present in the original version of the song and, most especially, the Filipino-worded song was sang by the group’s Canadian violinist Christine Mazur with flawless Filipino accent instead of its lone Filipino member, aLfie vera mella. Wrapping up the introductory part of the concert was local Rockers Traffikk Jamm, which delivered an equally energetic and engaging four-song set that included their versions of “Habang May Buhay”

wedding celebration of Canadian artist Dan Frechette and Laurel Thomsen.

(Afterimage), “Ang Aking Awitin” (Side A), “Tuloy Pa Rin” (Labuyo), and “Manila” (Hotdog). Backed up by his solid-sounding band, vocalist Arnold Tongol was a natural in inciting the audience to sing along with them.

After a short intermission, the most-awaited stars of the night made the crowd ecstatic, singing, dancing, and shouting the names of their idols. Marco Sison, Hajji Alejandro, Eva Eugenio, and Rico J. Puno were able to deliver their respective distinct styles in flying colors and soaring voices. The soft and smooth crooning of Sison melted the hearts of many, while the naughty and humorous spiels of Puno effectively elicited heart laughter from the audience. Alejandro’s prim and proper personality exuded from his serious style of singing, while Eugenio wowed everyone with her vocal belting as well as her flamboyant attires.

The lobby of the event centre was like a party after the show, when the artists—despite having gotten tired—gave chance to their fans to have pictures with them taken and autographs signed.

Everyone surely went home exhausted but contented.

Overall, the concert is more of a cultural event than a simple concert because the audience included also a good number of non-Filipino attendees who enjoyed the performances nonetheless. The producers were also able to give a chance for our Winnipeg local Filipino-Canadian artists to shine in their own ways and to perform in their best forms.

As in the words of Sison and Puno, during the soundcheck earlier in that day, “Ang ganda ng venue at ang ganda ng sound system. Eto ang pinakamagandang show namin sa tour na ‘to!”

The boxing world will come to a standstill on May 2nd when Floyd Mayweather

and Manny Pacquiao square off at the MGM Grand Arena in a matchup for the ages. Before the two square off in Las Vegas, both fighters found themselves face to face at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles to promote their much anticipated fight. There were no punches exchanged, just a long stare down and some barbs thrown from both camps.

Mayweather remained his confident self during the press conference without resorting to trash talk. The unbeaten American subtlety reminded everyone of his

undefeated record and making a small dig at Pacquiao's previous losses.

"I know one thing about sport, and if you lose, it's in your mind," Mayweather quipped. "I have always been a winner."

In contrast, Pacquiao remained his humble thanking both sides for making the fight for the fans and God's work for making him the fighter he is today.

"I believe this is what you are waiting for since five years ago" Pacquiao said to the boxing world. The Filipino fighter also wanted to inspire while he had the stage. "God can raise someone from nothing into something".

To be or not to be (married)A pinay’s guide to getting hitched

There’s a process to becoming a bride.

To be clear, I’m not referring to legal logistics. What I’m talking about are the decisions one makes on the road to marriage. If you’re still at the starting point, I must warn you it’s not an obvious path.

First, before anything else, you have to choose whether or not you want to be alone. This

comes before getting engaged, dating, and simply making yourself available. Committing to a relationship means you’re open to the idea of sharing your life with someone, and allowing yourself to be vulnerable in all the best and worst ways. Long-term commitments are scary for some, and impossible for others. And, let it be known, there is nothing wrong with choosing to be single. Get to know yourself best before letting someone else in.

If you’ve axed the idea of becoming a lifelong bachelor or bachelorette, now comes the hard part. That is, finding someone you want to spend the rest of your life with. It sounds simple, but finding a compatible person takes stamina. The lucky ones find their lifelong mates early on, but the average person will have to sort through a few duds before finding their match. At this point, it’s easy

to get discouraged, but my advice to those who are still searching is: don’t give up!

Say odds work out in your favour and you’ve found Mr. or Miss Right. No one says they have to be perfect. The only condition is you must love them unconditionally.

A year or two come and go. Then, another five fly by and, suddenly, you’re ten years down the road. Before you decide when to get married, ask yourself do you want to get married?

Some of us come from traditional families where marriage often sounds like the only option. Though I followed these footsteps, I’m a proponent of living together on your own terms.

Maybe you want to wait until you’re married before moving in together. Maybe you want to live together first and figure out if your lives can be synchronized before signing the dotted line. And maybe, just maybe, you choose to live under the same roof for the rest for your lives without sharing the same last name.

We all have different ideas and expectations of love and happiness. Figure out what it means to you, and pursue it.

Marada Monster Claim 2015 IKAW Basketball Championship

Sprint to the Finish

For the next month, fans of the Winnipeg Jets will be watching each game on the edge of their

seats hoping that their team can do just enough to clinch a playoff spot and stave off teams chasing them in the standings. With thirteen games remaining, the Jets sit in a favorable position with eight games at home and just five on the road.

The Jets kicked off the month of March with a matchup against the Stanley Cup champions, Los Angeles Kings. Drew Stafford continued to show Jets fans why he was acquired at the trade deadline by opening the scoring in the first period. After Kings forward Jeff Carter tied it up in the second period, the Jets fired right back with three of their own. Andrew Ladd scored twice in the second period and Michael Hutchinson stopped 18 of the 20 Kings shots in a 5-2 victory. After the game, the Jets captain spoke about the team building confidence while having fun as the stretch drive approaches.

"We head into every game knowing that we can beat any team," Ladd said. “It’s a fun time of year. It still doesn’t compare to playoff time but we’re getting closer and closer to that, so it will be exciting if we can get there.”

Winnipeg closed off their four game home stand against the

Ottawa Senators before setting off on a four game road trip. Rookie Sens goaltender Andrew Hammond puzzled the Jets all night long making one spectacular save after another. Kyle Turris had a goal and an assist for Ottawa and Hammond saved 35 shots in a 3-1 win. Michael Frolik scored the lone Jets goal on Hammond.

Resilient is one way to describe the Jets this year and they showed it again on the road against one of the top teams in the Central division. Without Dustin Byfuglien and Bryan Little, the Jets showed character in beating the Nashville Predators 3-1.

Blake Wheeler and Drew Stafford sparked the Jets offense both notching a goal and an assist.

The Winnipeg Jets and St. Louis Blues have had some fantastic matchups all season and could be a possible first round match up. Michael Frolik scored in his third consecutive game to open the scoring for the Jets. The Blues stormed back with four unanswered that included three goals in the second period. Down three goals in the third, the Jets rallied back with goals from Andrew Ladd, Lee Stempniak, and Blake Wheeler. With the game nearing the end of regulation, a harmless looking shot from centre ice by Blues Barrett Jackman fooled Ondrej Pavelec giving the Blue a 4-3 victory. Pavelec was stellar prior to the goal in relief of Michael Hutchinson who was pulled in the second period.

The Florida Panthers added to the Jets frustrations two nights later. In the the third period in a tight affair, Panthers forward Alexsander Barkov went high on Hutchinson to put his team ahead 3-2. Florida added an empty netter for a 4-2 victory. Scheifele and Stafford scored for the Jets in a losing effort.

After dropping two straight and falling out of a playoff spot, the Jets responded against a tough Eastern Conference team. After two scoreless periods, the Tampa Bay Lightning struck first with a goal from Nikita Kucherov. Drew Stafford evened up the game with 10 minutes remaining and Blake Wheeler scored the go ahead goal on a great forecheck. Pavelec bounced back with a 15 save performance.

After the win in Tampa Bay, the Jets took over a wild card spot and will look to defend their seeding against the San Jose Sharks in the first of three home games.
