What’s in a date?A pinay’s guide to planning your big dayDates are significant. They can mark the beginning of a life, a major moment in history, or – in the case of a wedding – an anniversary.

Your wedding date coordinates with a tiny little box on your calendar you hope to

smile fondly at. It’s one of the first things you decide on after getting engaged, and a celebration you’ll look forward to every year for the rest of your life.

How does one choose the perfect wedding date? Here are a few factors to consider:

•Prior history. Maybe you want your wedding to fall on the same day you met your man or woman to be. Maybe it’s the birthdate of your first child. Or maybe you’re just a little superstitious and really like the numbers three and seven. Some people choose to match their timelines with a day that was previously significant. The benefit to planning with this in mind is that your anniversary will be that much harder to forget.•Weather. Have you always imagined yourself as a spring bride? Or, perhaps, you’ve dreamed about that sunshiny summer wedding. It’s important to pick the right season to match your grand vision. Also, check out the historic forecast for the date in question. It helps to avoid times

that are susceptible to rainclouds or snowstorms.•Day of the week. Weddings generally fall on weekends. Brunches can be work on Sundays, and dinner and dancing best takes place at the end of the week. But don’t let tradition limit your options! You can certainly choose a weekday, but this comes with stipulations. Weekdays require extra notice, as many guests will need to book the day off. Don’t forget to write the day of the week on your save-the-dates and invitations, just in case some guests may forget to check when it falls on.•Destination. Sights set on tying the knot abroad? Give your guests extra notice, and choose a time

of the year that doesn’t coincide with a thousand other things (think holidays and school year). People also plan vacations around summer and winter, so try not to make them choose between you and a highly-anticipated getaway.

My husband and I chose a beautiful Friday in July that fell a few days before his birthday. It’s especially easy to remember because it also happens to be on American Independence Day. Historically, the weather was forgiving and it turned out to be a quieter time of the year for many of our friends and families, both at work and in their personal lives. With a little consideration and planning, it was an ideal recipe for an unforgettable wedding day.

Manitoba’s set date provincial election is now officially moved to April 19, 2016. Under section 49.1(3) of The Elections Amendment Act, the provincial election date moves from October 6, 2015 to the third Tuesday of April 2016 if, by January 1, 2015, the federal election date has not been changed. The change to Manitoba’s set election date was adopted to eliminate overlap between the timing of provincial and federal elections.

As a result of this change, the calendar year for determining advertising limits in the year of a fixed date election will now be 2016. The Election Financing Act (EFA) imposes limits on advertising by registered parties and candidates in the year of a fixed date election. Under section 58(1) of the EFA, the advertising limit is set at $268,000 for registered parties outside the election period and under section 58(2) of the EFA for registered parties and under section 58(2) the advertising limit is set at $6,500 outside the election period for candidates. These limits are subject to inflation adjustment as per section 59 of the legislation.

The advertising limit for the fixed date election year is separate and in addition to the limit for the election period (writ day to election day). There is no limit for advertising in a non-election year or in the year of a non-fixed date election (e.g. a by-election).

Manitoba’s set date Election moves to April 2016

Erap plans to retire in 2016, turning Manila’s rein over to Vice Mayor IskoErap said this Monday that he’s planning to retire when asked if he will seek a second term in 2016.

He already committed to his vice mayor Francisco Domagoso popularly known as Isko Moreno, was also an actor and a three-term councilor of the city’s first congressional district.

Isko may continue the projects he had started. He added that Isko is very much qualified.

Bakit Mas Mala-Fiesta ang Pasko at Bagong Taon sa Pilipinas? On Why Christmas and New Year Celebration in Cold Countries Is Not as Festive"We are the children of our landscape [and weather too]; it dictates behavior and even thought in the measure to which we are responsive to it."—Justine, by Lawrence Durrell.

A friend in the Philippines asked me how most people celebrate New Year here in Winnipeg,

Manitoba, Canada; and if it is as generally festive as it is in the Philippines. Here is my response to her:

I would say that the weather has a great factor on how people celebrate events. Winter here--especially the months of December to February are the coldest—

reaching -40degC. With that brutally cold temperature, events and occasions are better celebrated indoors. This is the primary reason Christmas and New Year is not festive here. Not that people don't like colorful, joyful, or festive celebrations but simply because the harshness of the weather wouldn't permit a comfortable lavish outdoor celebration.

Having said that, there are no firecrackers here—even watusi. There is, however, a park here known as The Forks—where there is a firework display that involves only shooting or firing off giant "Roman candles." The lightshow is usually short, from about 7–9 p.m. of New Year’s Eve, and then that's it; people then go back to their homes to celebrate the rest of the evening with a simple dinner with their families and, maybe, close friends.

Many Filipinos compensate for this inability to celebrate festively outdoors by hosting dinners at their homes for relatives and friends--the highlight of which is usually karaoke singing. There are also exchange gifts and some parlor games for kids and adults alike in some cases.

The good thing about this, however, is that, because the celebration is indoors, it makes the spirit of the season more intrinsically intimate, less ridiculously lavish, devoid of the dangers of firecrackers and stray bullets from careless revellers, and more of celebration than a contest on who has the most fancy display of materialism.

Or, in Simple Words

The celebration of Christmas and New Year’s Eve here in Canada is not festive not because people here don’t prefer it that way or not because they are not happy people; but rather because the kind of weather Canada has during the said holiday season, especially in the months of December to February, is too brutally cold to even allow people to stay long outdoors without feeling sick and uncomfortable. So, it’s really not about the people; it’s simply about the harshness of the Winter weather.

Down Memory Lane with Rico J. Puno and His Music

The ballad "Kapalaran," by Rico J. Puno, was a favorite of mine during

my childhood in the 1970s. It was one of the first songs that I got to memorize and sing as a child. I even remember singing this in duet with a cousin of mine, Alvin Napiza. Our fathers and uncles and aunties would enjoy letting the both of us sing together some of the popular songs of the time, but their common favorite was Puno's "Kapalaran."

I'm unsure now, but I think the song (or it could be "May Bukas Pa," another Puno song) was used also as part of the soundtrack of a Niño Muhlach movie in the late ’70s.

I had the chance to meet Puno in person for the first time in 1994. He was one of the hosts of the Philippine TV noontime variety show Chibugan Na, on Channel 9. My former band Half Life Half Death guested on the show to promote our single "Alimango." Puno was the one who introduced us. We made an impression on him; because the next time we guested on the same show, several months after, he gladly introduced us again and he remembered us especially for our New Wave hairstyles.

Rico J. Puno is a Filipino traditional Pop singer who started his singing career in the mid-’70s. Many of his songs are in the ballad form, but he also recorded a number of upbeat Pop and Novelty ditties. Aside from his classic “Kapalaran” (1976), his other popular songs include "Macho Guwapito," "Ang Tao'y Marupok," “Buhat,”and "May Bukas Pa."Final Note

On March 14, 2015, Puno is one of the featured singers in the concert OPM Pop Legends. The other performers would be fellow traditional Pop singers Hajji Alejandro, Marco Sison, and Eva Eugenio. The show will be held at Club Regent Event Centre. Opening the show are the Winnipeg local bands haLf man haLf eLf and Elisi and solo artist Levy Abad.

Migrant's Journey“I’m leaving you tomorrow. I’m heading for the prairie,I’m taking all my memories of the seasons with your smileI’m heading there to write my song and sing about a better life

In a place where peace and justice and compassion all abound”

“Heading to Manitoba” is a song that I wrote months before I left Mississauga for Winnipeg. I tried to put my experiences in

a song, as this is the only way I can assert myself and contribute socially. In Mississauga, I worked as loader in one of the logistics businesses, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., breaking down paper skids, sorting, and loading. I had to wrap a minimum of 20 pallets, monitor the conveyor lines to load the trucks that delivered the goods to different points of Ontario and other places. I did not really have complaints; actually, I enjoyed

the job. Its only repercussion was the negative impact on my health. And this made me entertain a question that I had before: “How long can I do this; I’m not getting any younger?”

During work time, I used to look at the boxes and wonder when I would be able to lecture again and talk about isms and social issues like I did in the old country. I remember being a part of the social movement and how I was always engaged in the politics of human rights and democracy for the marginalized. I helped out with farmers’ issues back then: calling for land reforms, lowering of land rents, campaigns against GMOs. I also helped with workers’ calls for increasing minimum wage and their struggle against contractualization, environmental destruction, government corruption, and other third-world issues that many Canadians are not familiar with.

In Mississauga, I remember being mostly asleep at daytime as I have to regain strength for graveyard shift. When my kids were still small, my wife was the one looking after them. I was the breadwinner of the family, and we managed to survive from paycheck to paycheck. Saturdays were devoted to volunteer work, helping out with a migrant organization by singing and writing songs; and at times, I helped out with discussions on Filipino history and migrants issues and concerns like the murder of Jocelyn Dulnuan (a live-in-caregiver) and the case of Juana Tejada (who was diagnosed with cancer and was about to be sent home despite her having completed her residency requirements. If not for the campaign to stop the second

medical test, she could have been sent home). In both cases, we were successful in advocating for their rights. I have the experience of going to different places in Ontario, to research on the varied conditions of Filipino migrants. My music brought me to Ottawa for a migrant’s concert and also to Montreal for a solidarity concert. Migrant stories inspired me to write songs such as “Para kay Ellen, Jocelyn, Sol, and Juana,” which was used also as a musical score in the award-winning documentary “Baby Not Mine” by Shashah Nakhai. That period, I realized that, to be able to assume a leadership role in the community, one has to improve first his economic situation. Since I was still struggling that time, I managed to contribute my time by giving songwriting workshops and talks on history of migration. As if these were not enough, I also attended studies on the scripture and shared ideas on theology of liberation, played the guitar, and sang at church on Sunday mornings.

One time, a friend told me, “It’s good that you still have time for writing songs, but no time for politics.” Actually, there is politics in songs; and whether you like it or not, songs are political. I told my friend that most of my songs are topical or sociopolitical in nature. What I like about songs is that they are affective and effective in articulating the issues of the day. Songs that tackle policies on migration and how to transform a situation to a better one, anti-war songs, songs dealing with human rights, and songs about justice and compassion.

Fast forward to 2013, I have released an album whose theme is human rights, entitled

Canadian Experience vol. 1 (Tagalog album). I followed this up in the early part of 2014 with the second album, Never Give Up (Canadian Experience vol. 2). Recently, I released my third album, Rhythms of Compassion (Canadian Experience vol. 3), featuring my originals songs such as “Stand Up for Your Rights,” “Souls Taken Away” (a song about the residential school system), “Daughter She Can’t Find” (a tribute to the murdered and missing indigenous women and girls), and “We Are Migrants” (summing up the history of migration in the province). I was fortunate to have been invited to perform many of my songs at the Rights Fest on the opening weekend of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. In addition to this, part of my volunteer work in the Winnipeg Multicultural Human Rights Forum is to coordinate events, where I also get to perform my songs. Aside from being an expression of my social sentiments and commentaries, my music is also my way of giving back to the community.

Just like how I started my article, I would end this with one of the verses of my song: “Heading down to Manitoba with a guitar and a songI bring my heart and soul to Winnipeg to heal and to be strongI’m heading down to Manitoba, and sing about a better lifeAnd write the best lines of the lyrics of the story of my life In the land and the spirit of the great Louis Riel.”

* Based in Winnipeg, Levy Abad is a freelance writer who also dabbles in songwriting/singing. He has released three full-length studio albums of original materials.

Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera’s Grand royal wedding

Months after the televised proposal, showbiz couple Dingdong

Dantes and Marian Rivera finally tied the knot in a grand wedding held Tuesday afternoon at the Immaculate Concepcion Cathedral in Cubao, Quezon City. They looked deep into each other’s eyes as they said their vows, and when at last they kissed, it was simply “sweet and solemn” and lasted under 10 seconds. Nothing

elaborate or overly dramatic, said a friend of the groom, who was nonetheless moved to tears.

Before the vows, the crowd erupted in ear-splitting shrieks when the dashing groom sped past the barricades and got off a shiny black Ducati motorcycle, wearing a suit by Randy Ortiz. While, Marian arrived around 3 p.m., 22 minutes past her “call time.” She was driven in a restored blue vintage 1976 Mercedes Benz sedan that could barely contain her gown. Marian's gorgeous wedding gown was designed by Dubai-based designer Michael Cinco.

President Benigno Aquino III served as best man, eight bishops and seven priests celebrated the mass. The entourage was a notable assembly of family, close friends and who’s who in local show biz. Among the principal sponsors of the so-called “royal wedding” were Batangas Governor Vilma Santos, Sharon Cuneta, Vic Sotto, Ogie Alcasid and wife Regine Velasquez, Helen Gamboa, Celia Rodriguez, GMA bigwigs Felipe Gozon, Gilberto Guavit, Jr. and Lilybeth Rasonable, TV5 executive Wilma Galvante, TAPE, Inc. Chairman Tony

Tuviera, producers Wilson Tieng and “Mother” Lily Monteverde, Bench owner Ben Chan, fashion designer Randy Ortiz, directors Joyce Bernal, Mark Reyes and Mac Alejandre and Dr. Vicki Belo.

Those who stood as secondary sponsors included Richard Gomez and wife Leyte 4th District Rep. Lucy Torres-Gomez, Ai-Ai delas Alas, KC Concepcion, Senator Bam Aquino and child sensation Ryzza Mae Dizon, who also served as flower girl.

Marian’s close showbiz friends Roxanne Barcelo and Ana Feleo were among her maids of honor while Dingdong’s brother, Jose Angelo Dantes, was among the best men.

Among the showbiz personalities listed as bridesmaids were Agot Isidro, Bettina Carlos, Rochelle Pangilinan and the recently married Bianca Gonzalez. Actor Paolo Contis was also one of the groomsmen.

The reception was held at past 6 p.m. at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, where more of the newlywed couple’s friends were invited, reportedly 1,100 invited guests in all.

QPAM celebrates "Kapit-Bisig" volunteerism at Winnipeg Harvest

Volunteerism has become the mantra of the officers, advisers and members of

the Quezon Province Association of Manitoba (QPAM), as shown lately last January 3rd 2015, when QPAM led other Filipino organization to volunteer at the Winnipeg Harvest. One would remember that last December 2014, QPAM joined the Manitoba Filipino Business Council's "Bayanihan" at the same institution; and one would not forget, the induction of the current officers and advisers of QPAM was held also at Winnipeg Harvest, sans long gown, barong and dinner-dance; and count this, they spent volunteer times at Siloam Missions, and during the MaCCFA's/Red Cross fund raising initiatives for Haiyan (Yolanda) victims in 2013; and on this coming Saturday, Jan. 10, at 7:30 to 10 a.m.a breakfast fund raising tagged as “Tara Na’t Mag-agahan” will be held at the Canton Food Gallery, 1111 Logan Ave.at McPhillips St., from 7:30 to 10 a.m.. Only $10 per person; $6 for kids, 4 to 12 years old. The proceeds will be for QPAM's"Tulong Sa Kalamidad", an initiative to extend help to the typhoon "Hagupit (Ruby) victims in Quezon Province.

"The tenacity of the Quezonians to help the less fortunate, in many ways, is a quality of leadership nurtured by openness and transparency of the officers, advisers and members, that after 25 years of existence, the association has become more determined, firmed in their purpose to help others," Rod E. Cantiveros, one of the advisers and founders (Ugat), says. "We stay together for many years, and we are even much stronger to pursue other initiatives to help our kababayans in Quezon and in the Filipino community."

"I do believe that if there is sincerity in purpose, consultative in governance, oneness in purpose, credibility in leadership, and faithful adherence on the "bayanihan" spirit, any group or association can survive with the test of time, and I do thanks our officers, advisers,

members and volunteers, to be with us in our volunteerism," says Maggie Chan-Urbano, QPAM presidednt, "QPAM is only a one big family, and I am lucky to have the Quezonians here in Manitoba working together, and have fun."

Last January 3, Saturday, 2015, it looked like the best way to celebrate the New Year, QPAMs together with the volunteers from the Philippine Canadian Guardian Brotherhood Inc. (PCGBI) Winnipeg Chapter, namely, Carlo Peregrino, Wilfred del Rosario,

Margarito Aguila, Abdon Chan along with Arlyne Jutiz and Maneth Amapro of FCTPAM; and Rebecca of the Winnipeg Harvest. With “Kapit-Bisig” as their rallying motto, the volunteers, in spite of bitter cold last Saturday, spent their time to help and to serve the less fortunate Winnipeggers.

And for the "Tara Na't Mag-Agahan" this coming Saturday, Jan. 10, tickets are available by calling Jun Arquero: 204-963-5782 or Maggie "Maan" Chan-Urbano: 2304-229-3363.

We wish you and your family the best in 2015!

Multipolar world order in a shrinking worldAfter the collapse of the

Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) in 1991,

there was only one superpower left in a unipolar world order: The United States of America. For the next two decades, America was the world’s hegemon. It kept peace in an ever-increasing turbulent world. Thus began the era of Pax Americana (American Peace).

Today, America is being challenged by two emerging superpowers: The Soviet Union’s progeny, the Russian Federation; and China, the fastest growing economy. While the two are still far behind the U.S. in terms of economic and military power, they have embarked on an ambitious path towards parity with -- or superiority over -- the U.S. And they are catching up, particularly in developing their nuclear power.

And what concerns the U.S. is that Eurasian and Asian powers are teaming up to confront America in a game of geopolitical brinkmanship. The Russia-China compact was sealed when Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a summit in Moscow on March 22, 2013.

In my article, “New World Disorder” (March 26, 2013), I wrote: “Upon his ascension to the presidency, Xi’s first venture outside China was to visit his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. At their summit in Kremlin last March 22, the two leaders agreed to form a “strategic partnership” to advance their countries’ interests. They affirmed their mutual support for each country’s geostrategic and territorial interests, which include territorial disputes. With more than 20 territorial disputes that China is embroiled with various countries — including Japan, Philippines, India, Malaysia, Taiwan, Vietnam — this could put Russia squarely on the paths of conflict, which could involve the United States who has mutual defense treaties with at least four of China’s adversaries.”China Dream

Since then, China has become more assertive – and aggressive – in pursuing its territorial claim over 90% of the South China Sea and East China Sea. On November 24, 2013, China declared an Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) covering most of the East China Sea.

Last December, Kanwa Defense Review, a Chinese-language military magazine based in Canada, reported that China had secretly set up an ADIZ over the South China Sea. The ADIZ supposedly covers the area that is demarcated by the nine-dash line, which was the basis of China’s territorial claim over the South China Sea. Artificial islands

The U.S. military believes that China is building an airbase on the Johnson South Reef in the Spratly archipelago in the South China Sea. China’s other reclamation projects include the Fiery Cross Atoll, Gaven Reefs, and Cuarteron Reef, which are also claimed by Vietnam and the Philippines.

China’s construction of military bases -- including air and naval bases – in the South China Sea would allow it to reach a wide swath of area bounded by the First Island Chain that runs from Japan’s southern tip through the Ryukyu string of islands, through Taiwan, through the Philippines’ islands of Luzon and Palawan, and all along the western part of Borneo. Interestingly, the First Island Chain runs parallel to the nine-dash line.

Indeed, that’s what Chinese President Xi Jinping’s “China Dream” is all about. Xi dreams of the revival of imperial China that had maintained Chinese hegemony in Asia during the reign of the Ming dynasty. “The great revival of the Chinese nation is the greatest Chinese Dream,” Xi said before taking office in November 2012.Lake Beijing

During the summit meeting between Xi and President Barack Obama in California last June, Xi told the media that he and Obama were meeting “to chart the future of China-

US relations and draw a blueprint for this relationship.” Then he added: “The vast Pacific Ocean has enough space for two large countries like the United States and China.”

It is now apparent that Xi wants the U.S. completely out of the South and East China Seas. China’s next move is to control the entire Western Pacific waters along the Second Island Chain which stretches from Japan all the way to Papua New Guinea by way of the U.S. territories of Guam and Saipan. That would put China’s navy at America’s doorsteps. If that happens, that would turn the entire Western Pacific waters into Lake Beijing; thus, fulfilling Xi’s China Dream.Imperial Russia

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has been trying hard to restore Russia to its old imperial glory. In 2014, he made several moves to assert his leadership over the Eurasian subcontinent that includes all of the defunct Soviet Union’s former republics and client states.

While Putin had succeeded in annexing Crimea, his efforts to bring down the pro-west Ukrainian government of President Petro Poroshenko were met with strong opposition from the U.S., European Union (EU), and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Putin reportedly bragged that Russia is a major nuclear power and also made threatening remarks to Poroshenko: “If I wanted, in two days I could have Russian troops not only in Kiev, but also in Riga, Vilnius, Tallinn, Warsaw and Bucharest.”

But little did Putin realize that such braggadocio won’t make the US and EU cower in fear. But Obama and the EU leaders had a

different weapon to use against Putin – economic sanctions.Collapse

And then the unthinkable happened: the price of oil plummeted, from $115/bbl (barrel) in June 2014 down to $53/bbl today! With oil exports comprising 70% of Russia’s total exports, it accounts for more than 50% of its budget. For the budget to stay in the black, the price of oil should be no less than $100/bbl.

The ripple effect is devastating! The Russian ruble lost 50% of its value since the Ukraine/Crimea “invasion.” The ruble is now trading at 58.7 to $1. Its value has nearly halved and capital outflows have reached $120 billion. And inflation is projected to be 8% at the beginning of 2015.

And the sanctions are working, causing innumerable damages to Russia’s financial sector, military, and others that Russia’s economy is dependent on.

With that grim outlook on Russia’s economy, Putin’s imperial ambitions suffer a huge setback. How can he go to war when the economy is in shambles?

Meanwhile, Xi offered Putin billions in loans to help Russia’s economy stay afloat and save Putin’s neck from the economically depressed Russian people who are expected to ask him to step down when the food lines start forming. But Putin said that Russia would only seek China’s help as a last resort, which begs the question: Would his generals remain loyal to him come hell or high water?

At the end of the day, planet Earth is going through a tectonic social upheaval; that is, a multipolar world order in a shrinking world.

Conquer Holiday Mountain, La Riviere, Manitoba

Surprisingly and unbelievably, our prarie province of Manitoba with no big

mountains like Alberta, British Columbia or Quebec is home to six ski resorts great enough for downhill skiing. For a ski enthusiast there's no need to make long trips or fly to other resorts unless you want to challenge your skills for more daring adventurous exploits of difficult black terrains or runs because right in our own backyard

we can quench our cravings to put on our ski gear to cross-country or head downhill.

Located just 15 minutes from downtown Winnipeg off highway 59 north on the Oasis Road the Springhill Winter Sports Park provides alpine skiing, snowboarding, ski and snowboard rentals and professional ski and snowboard lessons. Though quite small the park with 3 chairlifts (one quad) and two rope tows has a mogul run, a race run and open areas for the novices to learn the sport.

Known as the snowboarding capital of Manitoba, the Stony Mountain Resort ten miles north of our capital city is also great for skiing.

For a year-round outdoor adventure experience the downhill and cross-country trails of Falcon Trails Resort located at the eastern end of Falcon Lake.

And have you heard about the Mystery Mountain Ski Resort in the northern part of the province just outside Thompson?

A new ski area in the south western Manitoba is the largest one, the family-oriented Asessippi Ski Resort, a great place to relax and

enjoy skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing. Complete with full hospitality service (lunch, dinner and breakfast court and adults-only pub) the resort offers terrains of 25 alpine runs for all abilities and skill levels.

Still popular due to its complete outdoor facilities and proximity (only 90 miles from Winnipeg via highway #3 from the perimeter) is the Holiday Mountain Resort situated at the Pembina Valley nestled La Riviere, a town of approximately 250 people founded in 1886 by the Metis-Franco Manitobans. Home to the Wild Turkey the town is also famous for Hamm-tone Guitars and Mandolins and the Pembina Valley Guitar Building Course.

Founded by Noel Later in 1959 the Canadian family-owned Holiday Mountain Resort is Manitoba's ski resort with the first snow making system, first chairlift and first snow camera. However, the founder's favourite achievement is the installation of the first Carpet Lift believing he revolutionize skiers just learning. The Wonder Carpet Beginner doesn't require you to get on a lift or rope tow by stepping onto the carpet and comfortably gliding to the top of the slope.

Continuing the family tradition of innovation the owner installed in January 2013 Manitoba's first Winter Zipline - Manitoba's longest, steepest and fastest at over 1,487 ft. in length for a flight cost of $30.00 during winter or summer. Safety is assured as helmets are provided and the lines are professionally designed, engineered aand installed by the Office of the Fire

Commissioner and Manitoba School Boards Association of Risk Management.

Offering great alpine and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing, and a ski jump Holiday Mountain has 11 trails/runs that are named after the people who helped the founder with the creation of the resort. The blue chair operating at full speed from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm takes you to the intermediate and advanced runs such as the Deacon, Nowak Express, Irving, McCoubrey, Ridley, Groff, Turner, Reid, and Barclay Bowl. The green double chairlift running a bit slower than the blue from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. brings the skiers to the beginner or green runs. This lift doesn't run during night skiing.

Holiday Mountain is Manitoba's only resort with on-site accommodations. From one of its 10 cozy chalet-style A-frame cabins you could ski-out and ski-in!

Gem at Holiday Mountain

How much it cost you to ski at Holiday Mountain? Quite reasonable. The adult rate for full day is $40.00 and half-day ticket after 1:00 pm is $29.00. Students and military, $36.00; seniors (65 & up) $36.00; Youth (13-17), $34.00; Junior (6-12), $25.00, and under 6, FREE. Identifications are required for all discounted prices. Rentals are available. Helmets are optional at Holiday Mountain.

Before you leave check all your skiing gear and most importantly also the weather conditions. If it's harshly cold you won't enjoy skiing or snowboarding. Enjoy and have fun!

Sudoku Puzzles are games of patience, numbers and genius! The satisfaction of solving a challenging Sudoku Puzzle is one of the greatest accomplishments any sudoku game player can experience. Here is the puzzle. Good luck!

Solutions for Palaisipan & Sudoku will be posted online www.FilipinoJournal.com

PAHALANG PABABA

You’ll start this week feeling strong about your goals and plans for the future. And this kind of energy flowing through you gives you the right attitude to make a success of things. In addition, knowing the right people and connecting with the right groups can help your cause immeasurably. Put some time and effort into networking regularly and meeting with those who share your goals and aims and you’ll find your plans progress much more quickly.

You might be more aware of money matters, especially where shared resources and joint finances are concerned. This week will motivate some serious thought about how you can cut back on waste, increase your savings, or use any spare money to pay off debts. Meanwhile, this is as good a time as any to consider your career or personal ambitions and how you might progress.

A financial decision may be needed early in the month, or at least a chance to talk things through with someone who can set you on the right direction. You’re keen to expand your perception and get involved in opportunities that are a bit of a stretch. You’ll welcome challenges that bring new experiences, as well as bump up your skill set. Romance could also be in the cards.

You’re going to have a busy time ahead. Part of this may be your desire to get ahead, so you may be putting a lot of pressure on yourself to succeed. Knowing how to pace yourself so you don’t burn out too quickly could be a lesson worth learning. When it comes to joint finances and banking issues, you’ll be in front of the game should you require a loan. A bright idea can help you secure a needed credit.

Let yourself be guided by the wisdom of others. A few quick questions to the right person could put you on track to success in no time. Relationships in general are good, with an opportunity to expand your social circle and network with people.

Romance looks quite extraordinary, with opportunities to take a new relationship to the next level of commitment. However, don’t be tempted to manipulate a situation to suit you. It’s important to give your love interest the space and time to make a decision. If you do, you may find things move along smoothly.

Your communication sector suggests that writing, speaking, and marketing could be a big part of your life for the future. This could be an exciting time when you develop a writing or Internet business with serious clout. Lay the foundation now and the future could be very brilliant. Meanwhile, romantic opportunities look excellent.

The presence of Saturn in your personal finance area suggests it’s time to get down to business. This can be an ideal time to increase your income by starting an enterprise that could blossom over the coming weeks and months. You’ll need to work hard to get it off the ground, but once you do it could make a big difference to your lifestyle and income.

You may feel attached to certain responsibilities as Saturn moves more deeply into your sign, but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. If you’ve been dreaming about goals and plans, you now have the motivation to bring them to life. This a great time to expand your social circle, get in touch with friends you haven’t heard from in a while, or research your options concerning ideas you want to implement.

The current adjustment encourages you to take an unbiased look at your life to see what’s working and what isn’t. The things you’re passionate about and motivated to do are the ones to focus on. If any part of your life seems like a struggle, it may be past its due. Perhaps you’ve extracted as much from this experience as you can and it’s time to let it go. Listen to your heart and see what it says on the subject.

You’re in a natural phase in which it’s time to recharge your batteries. However, you’re also keen to start new plans and projects. For the time being, try to find balance between the two so you can make the most of promising opportunities. Your social life continues to look lively, although you may be targeting certain people or groups that share the same interest.

It’s time to think seriously about where you’re going and what you want to achieve. It’s best to have a plan in place even if you do change aspects of it further down the line. Your social life continues to buzz - with one relationship becoming intense. There is potential for romance in the air.

Winnipeg Jets Report

by Derick Ramos@DerickRamos

Battling the BugHeading into the new year,

the Winnipeg Jets have battled their way into

a Wild Card spot and will have the tall task of holding off teams chasing them in the standings. The Jets are now faced with another challenge out of their control as they battle the injury bug that will keep Jacob Trouba, Evander Kane, Zach Bogosian, Toby Enstrom, and Mark Stuart out of the lineup.

Before the Jets took on the Buffalo Sabres at home, it was announced that defenseman Jacob Trouba would be out due to injury until February joining Zach Bogosian. With one of their young stars out, another stepped up in his place. Mark Scheifele scored two goals in the second period and added an assist on an Evander Kane goal to slice the Sabres up 5-1. Ondrej Pavelec turned away 27 of 28 shots in the win.

With a thinning defense, the Jets traded for Jay Harrison from the Carolina Hurricanes for some help on the back end. His impact was felt immediately against the Boston Bruins as he assisted on the opening goal by Kane.

Mathieu Perreault scored late in the second period and Michael Hutchinson made 30 saves in a 2-1 victory over the Bruins.

The Philadelphia Flyers came to town to close off a four game home stand for the Jets. Winnipeg held on to a 3-1 lead going into the third period but Vincent Lecavalier took over the third period and scored two goals to even the contest. Flyers forward and NHL points leader Jakub Voracek scored his second of the game just 10 seconds into overtime to lift his team to a 4-3 victory. Flyers goaltender Rob Zepp outdueled Pavelec to win his NHL debut.

The Jets travelled to the "Windy City" to take on the red-hot Chicago Blackhawks. Winnipeg got off to a great start scoring three first period goals and never looked back beating the Hawks 5-1 and snapped their eight game home winning streak. Mathieu Perreault tallied twice and Hutchinson was brilliant in a 38 save performance.

Winnipeg opened up a home and home series with their budding rivals, the Minnesota Wild. In the first game at the Xcel

Energy Centre, the Jets had a bit of luck on their side to walk away with two points. Jets forward Evander Kane and Wild centre Mikael Granlund both had a goal and assist to help their respective clubs force overtime. Halfway through overtime, Andrew Ladd shot a harmless looking shot at the stanchions behind the Wild net and bounced back off Wild goaltender John Curry and into the net giving the Jets a 4-3 victory. In the second game in Winnipeg between the two clubs, Minnesota used three second period goals to edge the Jets 3-2. Frolik and Perreault scored for Winnipeg in the loss.

Eastern Conference powerhouse, the New York Islanders brought the fireworks to the MTS Centre on New Year's Eve. Ryan Strome had a goal and three assists giving the Isles a 5-2 victory. Captain Andrew Ladd scored twice in the losing cause.

The Jets started off 2015 in great form against a team whose number they have had . The ailing Toronto Maple Leafs, coming off a 3-1 loss to the Wild the previous night, were easily overpowered by the Jets 5-1. Dustin Byfuglien was a force scoring a goal and an assist and Bryan Little added a goal and two helpers. After the game, Byfuglien talked about why his team has been successful despite the injury woes.

"Our team buying into and sticking to our game plan," the defenseman said. "Worry about our defense first and our offense will come."

The Jets will take on the Sharks at home before embarking on a three game West coast road trip. Even with the injuries, the Jets are looking in the right direction as they are now chasing teams above them in the standings while keeping a close watch on teams chasing them.

The Republic of Adoboby Rod E. Cantiveros

What's in store for 2015?The shadow of 2014 is still

in our backyard, vanishing its memories into the

nothingness as the hopes and wild expectations of the 2015 have been creeping into our consciousness. No doubt we are hoping and expecting that the best things in life are in store for the next twelve months of the year.

To an individual consumer, the lower gas price. .82.9 per liter as of this writing, is a blessing and many economists are expecting more personal money will be spent to buy more consumer goods, and looking forward to have an out of province and international travel plans. But behind the falling price of oil, $50.00 per barrel as of this writing, the federal and some provincial governments are facing a dire financial reality, let alone adjusting their budgetary formula to address the changing fortunes from oil and gas industry. Consequently, due to the falling of oil prices, the executives of many oil and gas companies are postponing some major plans, cutting expenses, and possible lay-off of thousands of workers.

In our province, Manitoba, a non-oil economy, has maintained its economic stability due to a diverse industry, making the province as one of the most progressive provinces in Canada but recently, the government is rocked by the

question of leadership, leading to the probable changes in the rank and file in March when the new NDP leader and premier will be known. And federally, there is a continued economic progress in all fronts, making Canada as one of the most stable countries among the members of G8 (group of industrialized nations composed of France, Germany, Italy, United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada and Russia). Again, Canadians will be facing the Federal Election in October this year, hoping the best to come out for continued economic stability.

And in our Filipino community, with 70,000 strong, considered as one of the fastest growing community in Manitoba, what do we expect in 2015?

The Manitoba Filipino Business Council is a force to unite the Filipino business initiative into a fruitful fusion of a much stronger economic base in our community. The MFBC has recognized business leaders who have been forging their efforts and goals to maintain and sustain its economic presence in a multi-ethnic business climate. If one is aware of the rise and fall of Filipino businesses since in the early 70's, then, the MFBC has more challenges to face, let alone to encourage the business owners to be collaborative and engaged to move forward in the years to come.

Volunteerism is in the highest echelon of priorities among the leaders of the various Filipino associations and organizations. Just at the beginning of 20915, the Quezon Province Association of Manitoba has recently engaged in helping the Winnipeg Harvest with its "Kapit-Bisig". The leaders and members of Manitoba Council of Canadian Filipino Associations Inc, (MaCCFA composed of OFSAM.Quezon Province, Batangas and Bulacan Associations, Lupao Association, Bacoor, Pangasinan Group, Teatro Filipino) the Filipino Senior Group, Bisaman, The Manitoba Filipino Street Festival, PCCM, PAM, AIM, FCTPAM, Philippine Canadian Guardian Brotherhood Inc., Filipino Journal, CKJS, MFBC, the Bicol Association thru its medical mission; and the collaborative effort of Dr. Tom Colina thru his dental/medical missions in the Philippines, have extended their times and efforts to help our kababayans in our home country. Other local associations have extended their help for local needs, like the University of Santo Tomas Alumni Associations and the University of the Philippine Alumni Association by providing scholarship to those who are aiming for a post secondary career; and even MaCCFA officers had been inducted at the Siloam Mission, and this followed by the induction of the officers of QPAM at the Winnipeg Harvest, two local organizations, per record, to do such charitable gestures.

And to mention our growing corporate citizenry, companies and corporations, like UMAC, Vickar Community Auto Group, Lucky Supermarket, Sunnyday Group of Companies, the Filipino Journal which have been the major financial

contributors in various charitable initiatives. And other Filipino and Canadian businesses which have been generous in helping our kababayans.

The brand that the Manitobans are the most generous to charitable initiatives in Canada is keeping us proud, more so, when we open our hearts and our wallets. And for 2015, more charitable actitivies which encourage volunteerism will be in our cards!

But it seems we have no strong initiative to address the needs of our Filipino youth, the so-called Third Generation. This segment in our Filipino community must be maintained and sustained for the continuity of our community. Even our Filipino seniors are partly left out, thanks to the officers and members to the Original Filipino Association of the Manitoba (OFSAM), the Filipino Senior Group of Winnipeg and the Filipino Canadian Seniors Association (FILCASA) who have been working hard to serve the Filipino seniors, but more help and assistance are needed to stimulate their energy as part of our growing community.

Politically, the Filipinos are more engaged to throw a hat into the political arena. With the coming of the Federal (Octobber 2015) and Provincial (April 2016)elections, many of our kababayans are preparing their arsenals to face even our kababayans in the nomination process and in the actual election time. And the election of a new mayor, Brian Bowman, the Filipino community had become more engaged in the last civic election. Brian Bowman has become an inspiration for young Filipino politicians, a new mayor

who started with a 14% popularity to 56% tsunami votes! We have to encourage more kababayans to be "inside the box" in the civic election, especially in the field of education, as member/s of the school boards.

But as the weather drops, make your 2015 winter activities alive and kicking, like ice fishing, tobogganing, cross-country skiing, family or group downhill skiing, or just skate at the Forks, all these would give you the best taste of winter. Remember, spring is just at the front fort of our yard.

Based on the Chinese lunar calendar, 2015 is the year of the Sheep (Goat or Ram) when calmness and prosperity are in the offing.

And we end up with some New Year's musings: "For last year's words belong to last year's language. And next year's words await another voice. And to make an end is to make a beginning." T.S. Elliot"To dress up today in the threadbare garments of yesterday is to create an impoverished tomorrow." Craig D. Lounsbrough"We spend January 1st walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, crack to be patched. Maybe this year, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives...not look for flaws, but for potentials." Ellen Goodman"Waste no tears over the grieves of yesterday." Euripedes"Be at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let every New Year find you a better man." Benjamin Franklinand lastly, Resolution One: I will live for God. Resolution Two: If no one else does, I still will." Jonathan Edwards

All the best for 2015!

Happy holidays!

A magical night with the RWB NutcrackerThe big night was finally

here and I was ready! I was ready to walk onto the

Nutcracker stage and sit on a big comfy chair, pretend to smoke a big fat wooden prop cigar and maybe sip on some imaginary martinis with Maria Aragon. We also helped decorate the Christmas tree with indestructible shiny ornaments, and we even planned a couple twirls and pirouettes as we talked on stage with other party guests.

Maria Aragon and I were invited by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet to play special guests during Act 1, Scene 2 of the Christmas party in the RWB’s seasonal performance of the Nutcracker. Maria and I were two of 15 Winnipeg celebrities and media personalities that received the special invite for the walk-on roles. I actually found out about the walk-on roles last year when 103.1 Virgin Radio’s Ace Burpee and his mother were invited. This year’s

invited celebrities included 103.1 Virgin Radio’s Chrissy Troy, newly elected City of Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman and songwriter/vocalist, Sierra Noble.

The actual walk-on role was quite a breeze. Sitting in the big chair by the fireplace was easy and watching the performance happen right in front of our lap was magical. The RWB dancers are ridiculously athletic and extremely talented. Our on-stage coaches made sure we didn’t stray too close to the jumping and twirling ballet dancers. Maria and I actually talked to each other on stage and at one point, we counted down to do a synchronized twirl on stage. I was all in for the walk-on role and even took on the challenge in lifting Sarah Davey (playing Aunt Josephine) during the final sequences of the Christmas party scene. That was it and it was a spectacular experience!

The most memorable part of the walk-on role during the Nutcracker

was seeing all the magic that happens behind the scenes. There’s a lot of stuff going on backstage and it’s an intense production with multiple sets and several costume changes for many of the dancers. The newest and cutest addition to the Nutcracker was Hazel the polar bear and the twelve polar bear cubs.

I’d like to thank everyone at the RWB that made this years’ experience extremely memorable both on and off the stage. Thank you for inviting me to be part of your Christmas tradition and allowing me to share my experience with family and friends.

Hear me roar! Just a little backstage fun with a polar bear cub cast member. Playing with the food props on set.

“I am pleased to be serving a leadership internship with the management team in the business that my grandfather owned. Many of our customers are third generation, and I am proud to be the third generation of Scharfsteins at Canadian Footwear, and to have the opportunity to continue the family tradition of good value and good footwear that he started.”

Santa Claus for a Cause!MYXZ Images Photography & Events Concepts was feeling the Christmas Spirit last December when they hosted their Pose for a Cause fundraising photo session at JS Furniture. As luck would have it, good ol' St. Nick made a special last minute appearance to take family photos. Families were asked to bring a non-perishable food item to be donated to Winnipeg Harvest.

From everyone at MYXZ Images Photography and Events Concepts, thank you so much for supporting food drive for the Winnipeg Harvest. We appreciate your time and willingness to share your blessings to those who are in need! We hope you had a very Merry Christmas and celebrate a prosperous New Year!
