Lending a Hand at the Winnipeg Folk Festivalby Maria Cristina Laureano

As an internationally renowned premier outdoor music festival,

a lot is necessary to operate the annual Winnipeg Folk Festival. Along with staff, volunteers play a vital part of this equation. Each year, nearly 3,000 dedicated volunteers contribute over 60,000 hours and run every aspect of the event.

This year, Abraham Laureano not only volunteered at Folk Fest for the first time, it was his first time attending the event. Laureano, a Filipino Registered Nurse at St. Boniface General Hospital’s Intensive Care Cardiac Sciences (ICCS) unit, offered

his health care knowledge to the Festival Campground First Aid crew.

“I’m so used to the ICCS where there are life threatening situations so this was a nice change of pace.”

Comprised of 60 volunteers, the First Aid crew provides basic first aid, including handling blisters, cuts, dehydration, allergies, heat-related issues and more. Along with health care professionals, such as nurses and doctors, others with first-aid and CPR experience make up the crew.

This year, the First Aid crew experienced some changes to improve the experience of Folk Fest attendees.

“We merged the campground and main First Aid sites to have larger coverage and more potential for better care for patients . . . this is a build year and we hope to make this a new model for 2015,” said Festival First Aid Coordinator André Nault.

Despite the rainy weather, Laureano only had good things to say about his volunteer experience.

“I loved it, I’m coming back next year. There’s great music, a positive atmosphere and you’re in nature . . . I met a lot of new people . . . they [Folk Fest] treat their volunteers very well,” he said.

“Even though I was at the First Aid Tent (main stage) I was still able to hear music while

working. I really loved hearing Bonnie Raitt from a distance even if I couldn’t be in front of the show.”

Along with having a great time as a volunteer, Laureano thinks everyone should experience the festival at least once.

“This [the Folk Fest] is definitely an experience all Winnipeggers should have . . . I regret waiting so long to do it.”

And the main reason people went to the First Aid sites:

“Blisters and cuts from walking barefoot or wearing bad shoes,” laughs Laureano.

Abraham Laureano says the festival treated volunteers really well and let them do creative things like alter their volunteer shirts. Laureano’s tie-dyed shirt was done by his co-worker’s young daughter, Lilly Trevenen.

Family fun at the Fiesta DuathlonMost fiestas involve

food. In this case, it involved running and

biking and then followed by food. The Sulong Triathlon Club hosted it's first Fiesta Duathlon at Kildonan Park on a bright sunny morning on July 6. Just under a 100 participants made it out to the inaugural Fiesta Duathlon which was comprised of a short and medium duathlon event.

The family-oriented event was a huge success for participants and organizers including race director, Dennis Flores. Volunteers from the Sulong Triathlon Club, Pinoy Bikers of Winnipeg, University of the Philippines Alumni and Associates in Manitoba (UPAA-MB) and Triathlon Manitoba all

played a role in establishing a great first year event. Excitement is already building for next year's Fiesta Duathlon

Welcome to Winnipeg, Gail Ignacio: Drummer of Alamid and ImmaculateAlamid and Immaculate were Filipino Alternative Rock/Pop bands that became relatively

popular in the Philippines especially in the 1990s for their respective radio hit singles, “Your

Love” and “Girl.” And there’s one thing in common between these two bands: Gail Ignacio, who was the drummer of Immaculate as well as a younger brother of Alamid’s original vocalist, Gary Ignacio. Furthermore, Gail eventually became the drummer of Alamid for almost a decade.Alamid

Formed in 1991 initially as Athena’s Curse, Alamid rose to prominence in the mid-’90s Philippine Alternative Rock scene with the help of their self-titled album that contained their popular hits “Your Love,” “China Eyes,” and “Sixteen.” Original members were Gary Ignacio (vocals), Dexter Facelo (lead guitar), Thallie Facelo (bass), Efril de Dios (second guitar), Jay Sto. Tomas (keyboards), and Perry Jocson (drumkit). Ensuing members included Jet Broas and Gail Ignacio (drums). The group remained active until the late 2000s. They have released four studio albums: Alamid (1994), Panaginip (1995), Radio Friendly (1997), and Anting-anting (2005). Other recommended songs include “Echoing in Silence,” “Chaotic World,” “May Pag-asa Pa,” “Sama-sama,” “Childhood Dreams,” “Sa Iyo,” “Dedma,” and “Rizal Park.” The music of Alamid was best defined by the distinct low-register vocals, pop sensibilities of the keyboard tracks, tribal drumbeats, rolling

Formed in 1993, Immaculate (also known as Immaculate Dirt) was an Alternative Pop band comprised by Gerald Esguerra (vocals), Benjone Tangkeko (guitars), Euwe Jacob (bass), Modesto Atienza (keyboards), and Gail Ignacio (drums). They released two studio albums: Too Good to Be True (1995) and Inter Galactic Party (as Immaculate Dirt, 1997). 'Glenda' caused deaths, damage to infrastructureThe National Disaster

Risk Reduction and Management Council

(NDRRMC) said on Thursday afternoon that the deaths due to typhoon "Glenda" has now reached 40.

As of 4 p.m. the reported fatalities were from the regions of Ilocos, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, Eastern Visayas and Metro Manila. The typhoon also caused

injury to 17 people while four others remain missing.

The strong rain and wind brought by the typhoon also caused damage to infrastructure that includes houses, roads and bridges; and agriculture estimated at P49.18 million and P1.13 billion, respectively.

A total of 882,326 people or 167,293 families in seven regions have been affected by the typhoon.

Arum confirms Pacquiao-Algieri bout in NovemberTop Rank chief executive officer Bob Arum has confirmed Manny Pacquiao’s upcoming fight with undefeated Chris Algieri for his welterweight world title in Macau, China on November 22.

Algieri (20-0, 8 knockouts) a native of Huntington, New York last fought back in June 14 defeating Ruslan Provodnikov via split decision to bag the WBO Light Welterweight title..

The 30-year-old American boxer is an unknown fighter until he upset the Russian. Algieri is reportedly college-educated, having completed a master's degree and also works as a nutritionist. One of his promoters, Joe DeGuardia of Star Boxing, hinted that he will earn a career-high

payday of at least $1 million for the fight, excluding HBO pay-per-view proceeds. This is a vast improvement from his $100,000 purse against Provodnikov.

Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs), 35, has won two fights in a row since being knocked out by Marquez in December 2012. He outpointed in November and avenged his disputed split decision loss to Timothy Bradley Jr. on April 12 to regain his welterweight world title.

Meralco expects Metro full power restoration by Friday

Manila Electric Company (Meralco) senior vice president Alfredo Panlilio said Thursday that they expect full power restoration in Metro Manila by Friday and only 4 percent will remain without electricity in their other typhoon-damaged franchise areas.

Panlilio said in a televised press conference at the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) that the remaining 4 percent will be coming from the south.

The province of Quezon was the worst hit with 99.98 percent still without power while Batangas was also badly

affected with 94 percent of homes affected.

Meanwhile, customers experiencing power outages in Cavite and Laguna went down to 67 percent and 61 percent, respectively. In Rizal province, it went down to 47 percent down, Metro Manila 17.99 percent and Bulacan 11 percent.




Is Abad P-Noy’s Rasputin?One of the most -- if not

the most -- despised royal advisors in

history was Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin. Known as the “Mad Monk,” Rasputin was a Russian mystic who was an advisor to Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra during the tumultuous years of Imperial Russia under the Romanovs. Rasputin became close to the Tsarina because he was said to possess healing powers, which the Tsar and Tsarina believed gave relief to their only son and heir to the throne, Tsarevich Alexei, who was suffering from hemophilia, an incurable disease.

Rasputin became very influential to a point where Nicholas relied on Rasputin’s advice on matters of State. Many believed that Nicholas’ reliance on Rasputin had created the conditions that contributed to the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917. However, it was corruption, poverty, and the oppressive rule of Nicholas that finally brought down the Romanov dynasty.

Almost a century later, the Nicholas-Rasputin model was replicated in the Philippines where she remains mired in poverty in spite of the economic bonanza that was being touted by President Benigno “P-Noy” Aquino III. But if one has to eyeball the numbers, the Philippines still ranks as one of the most – if not the most -- corrupt countries in Asia. DAP

While the genesis of the Disbursement Accelerated Program (DAP) might have been a noble attempt by President Benigno “P-Noy” Aquino III to boost the economy -- which is to realign “savings” from slow-moving government projects to new programs -- nobody questioned the method he used.

DAP similarly works like the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) or “pork barrel” system. The basic difference is that Congress appropriates the PDAF while the Executive Branch transfers funds from the national budget to the DAP without the authority of Congress. But since the members

of Congress also benefitted from DAP, nobody rocked the boat… until Sen. Jinggoy Estrada, in his privilege speech before the Senate, dropped a bombshell.

In his privilege speech, Jinggoy exposed – and questioned -- the existence of DAP. He said that the 20 senators who voted to convict then Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona in 2012 were each given an additional P50 million in discretionary funds. Department of Budget and Management (DBM) Secretary Florencio “Butch” Abad admitted the release of the DAP funds to the senators; however, he denied that they were used to reward the senators who convicted Corona. Patronage politics

The controversy about the creation of DAP was finally settled with unanimous vote – 13-0 -- by the Supreme Court. The high court ruled that three key parts of DAP were unconstitutional. It was a major setback for P-Noy, who depended on Abad when it comes to fiscal matters, particularly the disbursement of funds from DAP and PDAF, which the Supreme Court had ruled unconstitutional last year. Indeed, it was a double whammy for P-Noy, who had hitched his presidency on the heavily funded PDAF and DAP to achieve his goals. However, many believe that P-Noy used PDAF and DAP to buy the loyalty of the members of Congress.

But what is really sickening is the revelation that P-Noy approved P177 billion for DAP. According to the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan), they obtained copies of seven memoranda from DBM signed by P-Noy over the past three years, approving projects worth between P174 billion and P177 billion under the DAP.

According to presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda, 91% of the DAP funds was spent “properly” by the Executive Branch. However, he couldn’t account for the remaining 9%, which is about P16 billion of the P177 billion that P-Noy allocated for DAP. That’s a lot of moolah, Mr. President!

But PDAF and DAP are peanuts compared to what P-Noy had inserted in the 2014 national budget. According to former National Treasurer Leonor Briones and Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Neri Colmenares, the lump sums under the President’s discretion amounted to around P1 trillion. This “presidential pork barrel,” as Briones and Colmenares called it, represented a whopping 38% of the national budget! Collapse of an empire

Regardless of how P-Noy spins it, the fact remains that the highest court of the land had unanimously struck down the DAP program. But P-Noy’s defense of Abad amidst calls for his resignation, manifests the strong bond between them, which is an alchemy of a weak leader and a strong surrogate, just like Tsar Nicholas II and Rasputin. But ultimately the Nicholas-Rasputin alchemy failed and the House of Romanov, which had ruled Russia since 1613, fell when Nicholas abdicated the throne on March 15, 1917.

The question is: Could Tsar Nicholas II have stayed in power had he gotten rid of Rasputin? This question had been the subject of speculation by political scientists and history buffs. Some say that the downfall of the Romanovs was inevitable due mainly to the tyrannical and ineffective rule of the weak Nicholas who depended too much on Rasputin for advice.

During World War I, Rasputin claimed that he had a revelation that the Russian army would only succeed if the Tsar took personal command. Nicholas immediately went to the front line and took command of the Russian army. With no experience in commanding an army, the Russian army was beaten.

While Nicholas was away at the war front, Rasputin’s influence over Tsarina Alexandra increased. Pretty soon he became Alexandra’s confidant and personal advisor. He also convinced her to fill some government positions with people he had handpicked.

As the Russian economy rapidly declined, the people blamed their problems on Alexandra and Rasputin, whose immense influence over her was deemed the cause of all the ills of the empire.

It’s interesting to note the uncanny similarity between the Nicholas-Rasputin relationship and the Aquino-Abad tandem. Nicholas and Aquino were both perceived as weak leaders who had to rely on strong people for advice and direction. Nicholas had Rasputin. Is Abad P-Noy’s Rasputin?

Small Errors Equal Big Immigration Problems

Although the individual filling in an immigration application may be

completely honest and truthful, it is still possible that a clerical error on a piece of important information could cost that individual their visa.

In the case of Virhia v. Canada (Citizenship and Immigration Canada), Gurpreet Virhia, a citizen of India, filed an application for permanent residency under the Federal Skilled Worker class. As part of this immigration stream, applicants are awarded “points” if they meet specific criteria under categories, such as language ability, an offer of employment in Canada, and post-secondary education.

In Ms Virhia’s case, the issue was her claim that her spouse, who would be accompanying her to Canada, had a relative already living in Canada. The reason why this was so important was that the “adaptability” points she received for having a relative in Canada provided just enough points to ensure her eligibility. If Ms Virhia did not have these extra points, she would no longer meet the requirements to immigrate.Discrepancies in the information

On Ms Virhia’s application, there were many alleged

discrepancies surrounding her relative, due to the fact that the documentation contained two different names for the same person and two different dates of birth.

Ms Virhia provided a school certificate for a Rajwant Singh, born May 12, 1961, as well as a Canadian passport for a Rajwant Khangura, born May 16, 1961. Ms Virhia stated that these two individuals were, in fact, the same person.

Having been confused by the differing names and dates of birth, the Immigration Officer who had been processing Ms Virhia’s application contacted Ms Virhia and provided her with 30 days to give an explanation. Ms Virhia responded with an unsworn statement from Rajwant Khangura which indicated that

1.Rajwant’s date of birth was consistently shown as May 12, 1961 on both the school certificate and Indian passport;

2.That the date of birth shown on Rajwant’s Canadian passport was erroneous and due to a clerical error; and

3.Rajwant Khangura and Rajwant Singh are the same personEnough time to fix the error

The Officer refused the application on the basis and found that, since Rajwant had been resident in Canada since 1988, it was not reasonable that he never corrected the s alleged clerical error. Simply put, the officer did not believe that Rajwant Singh and Rajwant Khangura was the same person.

As a result, Ms Virhia was not awarded any points for having a relative in Canada, and was therefore refused her application for permanent residence. Check you documents

Math and Aftermath Many years ago while taking

an electrical engineering class at the University

of the Philippines in Diliman, I was thoroughly impressed by my professor, a Prof. Bartolome Blanco, who solved a differential equation with initial conditions by some sort of a “trick.” He called his trick the Laplace transform.

With thirty some bright-eyed classmates agog at learning new ideas, I was wondering if he was pulling our legs. Ever quick on the uptake, Prof. Blanco said, “If any of you wish to impugn what I taught here, you can check out my solution by plugging it into the equation or you can run to the Math Department to see what was going on.”

Wow! Some of us had brushed elbows with the simplest differential equations, never heard of transforms except in reference to converting high voltage to low voltage. And “impugn”? I had read that word somewhere in a long forgotten book but that was the first time I heard it used. Now you understand why I was impressed with my prof and

I had visions of following in his footsteps.

And so, I jumped on the opportunity to teach engineering at UP upon my graduation when the dean offered me an instructorship. At the same time I took more math classes on the side: a class on differential equations here, a class on advanced engineering math there. It certainly gave me a step up when I went abroad for graduate studies.

Now fast forward to what I ended up doing. My Ph. D. dissertation at the State University of New York at Stony Brook was on the Hankel transformation of generalized functions.

The University of the Philippines is a great source of inspiration for our youth despite its poverty of material resources. It is however rich in a faculty that is a fountain of wisdom and knowledge. I credit Prof. Blanco in igniting a spark to my career. But there were many excellent profs I had. I would be remiss not to acknowledge Professor Josefina Constantino who instilled in me a love of the English

language. And thanks to our late beloved editor Linda Cantiveros, I had this column for my outlet since 1993. From the time I retired in 1999, I have published short stories, poems and essays online and in print.

American poet Adelaide Crapsey invented a verse form in the 1920s called cinquain, which is a poem of five iambic lines of two, four, six, eight and two syllables. There are no restrictions on rhyme but there is a central theme in the cinquain. Here are some cinquains of mine on scientists.

Rod and Reel Basics Part 2

In the last article, I outlined some basic information about fishing reels. In this issue I

will discuss some options when looking at rods.

The anatomy of a fishing rod is more or less the same despite the wide variety of styles and designs that are on the market. The main parts are the rod blank, line guides, reel seat, and the rod handle. The reel seat is how the reel is attached to the rod and is either made for a baitcasting reel (above the rod) or a spinning reel (below the rod). The line guides are the rings attached to the blank and generally speaking, the more line guides on the rod the better. The rod handle can vary in grip design and length depending on the application. Common materials used are plastic, foam, or cork. The blank is essentially what the rod is. The rest of the parts are designed to complement the design and purpose of the blank.

rods of generations past. Anglers now have the advantage of using rods that are much stronger, yet are still more sensitive than what was previously available. Blanks can be made of carbon, fibreglass, graphite, or some combination of these materials called a composite. The characteristics of a good rod are strength, sensitivity, and being light in weight. An all graphite rod best fulfills these qualities but it is also the most expensive. A more affordable option is graphite composites which are suitable rods for multi-purpose applications.

On the side of a rod just before the reel seat you will find that rod’s specification label. This information will often include the model number, rod length, action, power, and lure weight or line weight range. The model number will almost always be the first set of characters on this label. Rod lengths will be displayed in feet and can vary from as short as 4’6” to as long as 11’. The majority of rods you will find in a store however will be in between 6’ and

8’. Anything below or above this range is generally considered to be a specialty rod for a specific technique. The lure weight range will typically show a low end and a high end such as 1/8oz – 1/2oz. Line weight will be displayed in pound test such as 8lb – 12lb. This means that this particular rod would perform optimally for lures or rigs in that weight range or lines in that range.

The action of a rod describes how the rod’s tip will flex under load. This can range from slow to extra fast. Slow means that the rod will bend more evenly throughout the length of the rod. Extra fast means that the rod is stiffer and the bend will be mostly at the top end. A moderate to fast action is the most versatile and will work fine for most techniques. The advantage of a slower action is a more even distribution of flex so as not to pull a hook out of a fish’s mouth such as what often happens with treble hooks. Or when fishing for soft mouthed fish like goldeye or crappie you are less prone to rip their mouths. A faster tip is good for more sensitivity to detect strikes and still have backbone for a solid hookset such as when fishing for walleyes or bass with jigs or livebait.

A rod’s power rating can range from ultralight all the way to heavy. Just as it sounds, an ultralight rod is thinner and is designed to be used for panfish or light jig or lure techniques. At the other end a heavy rod

will be thicker and is ideal for chasing larger species or for throwing heavier lures or rigs. The different combinations of action and power are numerous with each one designed to fish a specific technique, presentation, or aimed at landing certain sizes of gamefish.

Visiting a fishing store with knowledgeable staff on hand is the best way to get proper advice on a setup that is ideal for you. Most

stores will conveniently have various rod and reel combos for sale which are already paired up to match each other’s specifications. When making a rod and/or reel purchase remember to factor in what techniques you will be using them for and how often you will be using them. This will go a long way to making sure you have the right equipment for a more enjoyable time on the water.

Food Tours of Winnipeg

The Winnipeg food scene is pretty amazing right now. On a recent tour of the

Exchange District’s new Little South America food tasting tour, I found out that Winnipeg has more restaurants and cafes per capita than major Canadian cities.

Transit to screen at 2014 Gimli Film Festival

A little slice of the Philippines is heading to the Gimli Film Festival.

Transit, a film by Hannah Espia and produced by Paul Soriano will be screened at the 2014 Gimli Film Festival on Saturday, July 26 at 2:30pm at the Aspire Theatre.

Transit explores the intersecting stories of Filipinos in Tel Aviv when the threat of a law deporting the children of migrant

workers looms their precarious lives. Janet, a domestic worker on an expired visa, struggles to hide her half-Israeli daughter, Yael—a rebellious teenager caught up in a juvenile romance. Most endangered in the situation is four-year old Joshua, whom Janet and Yael protect because the boy’s father, Moises, works on weekdays as a caregiver in the city of Herzliya. The film also explores the life of a young lady, Tina, who arrives to start a new life in Israel.

Gonzales wins the inaugural Maricel Lisan Memorial Scholarship Award

Wandaly Gonzales looks forward for her university study, thanks to the Maricel Lisan Memorial Scholarship Award, initiated by Alexandra Dela Cruz, Maricel's sister-in-law.

At the annual school convocation held recently at the Centennial Concert Hall, the Maples Collegiate awarded the $1,000 cash award to Wandaly Gonzales, 18, and a Garden City resident, who will be pursuing business education at the Asper School of Business this coming September. Gonzales also won the $500 scholarship from CUPE 949.

"This scholarship would help pay for my tuition fees as I enter Asper Business School. It would be a great help in assisting with my financial needs, considering how expensive the university education is," said Wandaly Gonzales. "I'm grateful for the opportunity given and I think starting the memorial scholarship is a great way to honour and remember Maricel Lisan's memory," she added.

The celebration of the life of Maricel Lisan, also a graduate

at the Maples Collegiate in 2000 who passed away in 2010 at the age of 29 of end-stage renal disease, began when Alexzandra Dela Cruz thought of a wonderful move to memoralize the trying but a wonderful life of Maricel.

"My husband's been sick too. He's in remission. They (Michael and Maricel) were both in the same hospital the last month when she was ill. They were two floors away," Dela Cruz said. "It was traumatic for myself, Maricel's parents (Reynaldo and Florence Lisan), eldest daughter Myla Fajardo and Maricel's partner, Mark Beitz, since both Michael and Maricel were in the hospital at the same time. My drive to start this scholarship was based on the experience we all had to face at that time. As well, losing a child is devastating, I cannot replace Maricel for them, but only to show to her family and her friends my strength to make sure that Maricel will not be forgotten."

Maricel was a vibrant,friendly individual who didn't let her illness stop her doing what she wanted to do. While she

was in the hospital, in the last three months before she passed away, she still managed to out on passes to to the kid's birthday and family events.

"She was so involved, so engaged. Even if she was sick, she wanted to go out and do as much as she could," Dela Cruz said.

An inspiration to others, Alexzandra Dela Cruz initiated the Maricel Lisan Memorial Scholarship Award, and through the help of the Lisa family, siblings, relatives and friends, they were able to raise almost $3,000 from a huge May Long Weekend garage sale held at her residence in Amber Trails.

"Maricel was so well-liked, raising money and support for the scholarship would not be a problem," Dela Cruz said.

Seven Oaks Education Foundation of the Seven Oaks School Division provided the initial fund. As well, cash donations were received from Japan and Vancouver, and within Manitoba. Unsold items would be donated to Centre Flavie-Laurent in St. Boniface which distributes furniture, appliances and other Maricel's parents, Reynaldo and Florencia Lisan, with Wandaly Gonzales, 1st recipient

“The Maricel Lisan Memorial Scholarship Award was conceived to find peace, comfort, fulfillment and satisfaction by helping a deserving graduating high school student at the Maples Collegiate in the Seven Oaks School Division. This is an act of kindness and generosity from the Lisan family,” said Ms.

Socorro Juan, member of Board of Trustee, Seven Oaks School Division.

"This scholarship will be an annual event to continue the legacy of my sister-in-law, to give back something to the Filipino community and to inspire our younger generation the value of education, and the true meanings of giving and sharing," Dela Cruz said.

Japanese films go southThe 2014 Eiga Sai or

Japanese Film Festival will go to Cebu City in Visayas

and Davao City in Mindanao to screen several films.

The Japan Foundation said in a statement Thursday that five selected films, including the Cannes Jury Prize winner ‘Like Father, Like Son’ by director Hirokazu Kore-eda, will be screened at Cinema 2, Abreeza Ayala from July 25 to July 27 and 12 films will be screened at the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) Cinematheque, Davao City from July 29 to August 3.

Meanwhile four films will be shown at the Cinema 4, Ayala Center Cebu from August 6 to 10.

Prior to its stint in southern Philippines, the Japanese filmfest had a successful run at the Shangri-La Plaza Mall to mark the Philippines-Japan Friendship Month for July.

Sixteen Japanese contemporary films were screened during the launch.

Filipinos to compete in Australia’s ‘X Factor’

The sixth season of Australia’s version of “The X Factor” will see three Filipino

competitors.On Sunday’s episode, 14-year-

old Sydney-based student Marlisa Punzalan got the judges’ nod with her powerful performance of The Beatles’ “Yesterday.”

On Tuesday, 15-year-old Justin Vasquez of Melbourne and 28-year-old health care worker Mary Ann Van Der Horst from Victoria made

good impression on the judges with their impressive numbers of Maroon 5’s “Sunday Morning,” and Beyoncé’s “Halo,” respectively.

The panel is composed of Judge Ronan Keating, Judge Redfoo of LMFAO, Judge Natalie Bassingthwaighte and Judge Dannii Minogue.

“American Idol” judge Jennifer Lopez will reportedly appear as guest judge on “X Factor” Australia this season.

commitments were highlighted as Precy Merluza was crowned as Mrs.

Precy Merluza was crowned as the inaugural Mrs. Philippines-Manitoba 2014 during the Mrs. Philippines-Manitoba Coronation Night hosted by the Manitoba Council of Canadian Filipino Associations.

Manitoba 2014, a major fundraising project of the Manitoba Council of Canadian Filipinos Associations Inc.(MaCCFA), to contribute in the

reconstruction projects in Samar or in Leyte.

The Saturday night proclamation and coronation, a dinner-dance event, was considered as a celebration of

women who have been involved in the fund raising effort. In more than one and half-hour program, the strength of four women has been recognized, an affirmation that their role in the society is more relevant and timely.

Letty Antonio, chairperson of the pageant committee, says: "Women have a greater role in our society, and with this pageant initiated by MaCCFA, we have focused on the four ladies to help us raise fund to help our less fortunate kababayan, and with their efforts, with the fund is now available we are working to find ways to address our reconstruction plan."

Since the foundation in 2009, MaCCFA's mandate has been to help the victims of calamities, and it was done when the group helped raised money thru the Red Cross, the financial support to the Haiti's earthquake victims; and the fundraising campaigns for Haiyan (Yolanda) victims.

In the glittering decor of Justin Merluza, the pageant went on smoothly as the guests were totally impressed by the four finalists' passion to help the less fortunate kababayans in the Philippines.

As said by the newly-crowned Mrs. Philippines-Manitoba 2014 Precy Merluza, in her thank you message: She said with smile: “First, I have to thank God for all the blessings, to my family, my in-laws, my relatives, my kumares and kumpares, my friends, my co-workers,and to the various officers and members of many Filipino associations like Lupao Association of Winnipeg, QPAM, BISAMAN, who had worked hard to help raise fund for our less fortunate kababayan in the Philippines; and to the officers and members of MaCCFA which gave the four of us the opportunity to realize mandate to help other people, and to our guests who have come to witness this unforgetable event. Our role as women in this pageant, with charity in our hearts, we have accomplished our mission to help others who are in need. Thank you very much.”

Other three winners Gloria Magpali, Mrs. Mindanao-Manitoba 2014, Fely Paredes, Mrs. Visayas-Manitoba 2014; and Zeny Calimlim, Mrs. Luzon-Manitoba 2014 had expressed their appreciation to all those who had helped them raised the funds to help the Haiyan victims in the Central Visayas. As they mentioned, the OFSAM, FILCASA and FIDWAN which they represented had been active in the solicitation of funds. Their families,relatives, friends and co-workers had helped, thereby helping our kababayans who are victims of calamities. During the pageant two special awards were given: Gloria Magpali, Mrs. Mindanao-Manitoba 2014 got a nod from her colleagues the title: "Mrs. Friendship Special Award: sash was pinned by Tony and Letty Antonio; Norman and Candy Padilla offered the flowers and Precy Merluza, Mrs. Philippines- Manitoba 2014 won the coveted special award: Best in Gown.

Balagtasan boasts popularity; Sungka Tournament gets support

As the KALAYAAN 2014 Celebration by MaCCFA has been going on, the

current cultural events,, namely, BALAGTASAN, Sungka Tournament and Yoyo Demo, have become successful as the participants have become excited to witness the first poetic debate, and to join the tournament, and they have promised to come and join again by next year.

"Thank you for your Balagtasan, and I do hope that many of our kababayans specially the younger ones to be involved. I enjoyed the exchange of ideas," said by one of the guests. "This Balagtasan must be promoted among Filipinos, as one of the most important cultural heritage. What is happening today, we are forgetting many cultural activities which identify us as Filipinos."

Rod E. Cantiveros , MaCCFA president, acted as the "Lakandiwa" while Letty Antonio, OFSAM president and MaCCFA adviser, defended her turf: " It is better to live in Canada", while Clarita Nazario, VP, OFSAM and secretary, MaCCFA, had to stand for her side: "It is better to live in the United States." Both ladies received resounding applause from the audience.

Special participations included Eli Monez, a member of Knight of Rizal, who dramatized Rizal in his poem; while Aida Champagne, president of FSGW and chairman, Manitoba Street Festival, had made the audience cried for her moving "tula" (poem). Eli and Aida had performed with professionalism and with a touch of nationalism.

Arlyn Quitorres was the first champion in the "Sungka Tournament" as she faced Aida Champagne in the final round. Other participants include Julie Javier, Jean Guiang, Normita Cymbalisty, Flora, Lorie Fernandez, Ken McDougal, Melanie Wight, Eli Mones, Clarita Nazario, Letty and Tony Antonio; a friend and family of Quitorres. The task of selecting the 2014 Queen of the Festival came down to the seven judges. The judging panel included Tia Polvorosa of Provici Cosmetics; Myla Ibabao - 1st runner up 2013 Queen of the Festival; Romilyn Davila Lacap,

1984 Miss Philippines Manitoba; Manny Trawon, Director with the MFSF; Jarrett Beyko, General Manager of Jim Gauthier Chev; Miss Angel Bhatal, a beauty Queen, 2nd runner up Miss Earth Canada; and Mr Gil Buenaventura, Director of Magdaragat Philippine Folks Arts.

Entertainment throughout the evening included opera performances by Jan Nato, a special vocal presentation by Gloria de Paz-

Hryniuk, Azel Navarro and Grace Ann Panganiban. During the final walk of 2013 Queen, Alyssa de Guzman was accompanied by a musical rendition on saxaphone by Jomar de Leon.

The entire evening was planned and organized by the MFSF Pagean Committee headed by Alyssa De Guzman, Orlando Sanche , Roldan Sevillano, Myla Ibabao, Frances Magnaye, Angelica Ilagan and Ester Camuyong. Thanks to the various

Manitoba Filipino Street Festival meets the Calgary StampedeAida Champagne along with several directors and members from the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival represented the Filipino community from Winnipeg earlier this month at the Calgary Stampede. They joined the Power In Motion Group from Calgary,

Alberta and returned the favour after the Power In Motion group presented at last month's Tiangge Ng Bayan. The Power In Motion group will be back in Winnipeg next month to participate in the 2014 Manitoba Filipno Street Festival on Saturday, August 23.

The Reel Story Never Ends(On Some Recommendable Films through the Decades)1980s: Valley Girl (1983)

In the previous issues, I’ve recommended quintessential ’80s-released youth-oriented

movies such as Some Kind of Wonderful, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Pretty in Pink, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. While these films have helped describe coming-of-age relationships and youthful adventures set in commercial USA in the 1980s, they were not all. There remain so many films of the same genre and theme that have memorable plots, characters, and soundtracks. Another personal favorite from this genre that I have seen more than a dozen of times is Valley Girl.

Released in 1983, Valley Girl stars a very young Nicolas Cage (Randy), who plays a downtown New Waver who falls for the character of Deborah Foreman (Julie Richman), a “valley girl” whom he exchanged affectionate glances with at a beach. However, despite the mutual attraction that both feel for each other, there are a few complications—Julie

is just fresh from a breakup from her arrogant boyfriend, Tommy (Michael Bowen), who wants to have her back, and her friends do not approve of Randy because of his weird hairstyle and clothes. Nevertheless, the casual fondness between the two blossoms into a sort of a Romeo-and-Juliet romance, amidst the constant pressure of her friends to get back with Tommy. Luckily, Julie’s parents are also cool like

Randy, with her father’s having been a hippie himself back in his ’60s youth, so Julie’s perspective is obviously more open than that of her friends. After losing Julie to Tommy because of peer

pressure, Randy’s best friend, Fred (Cameron Dye), concocts a plan. They gatecrash into the junior prom of Julie’s school. While Julie and Tommy are being introduced as the prom king and queen, Randy confronts Tommy behind the stage and they engage in a fight. As soon as the curtain pulls back to reveal the king and queen, Randy knocks Tommy out. Julie is more than happy to end up with Randy after all. The two escape and head to a hotel and the movie ends with Modern English’s “I Melt with You” playing in the background. Other New Wave songs that featured prominently in the movie included “A Million Miles Away” (The Plimsouls), “Johnny, Are You Queer?” (Josie Cotton), and “Eyes of a Stranger” (The Payolas).

The most memorable part of the movie, for me, is that which showed a montage of Randy and Julie spending lovely evenings together on a backdrop of the entirety of “I Melt with You.”The Last Leaf

Valley Girl was directed and primarily written by Martha Coolidge, whose other noteworthy films include the youth-oriented comedy Real Genius (1985), starring Val Kilmer and Gabriel Jarret; and the drama Rambling Rose (1991), starring Laura Dern and Robert Duvall.

Interview Clues, Part 1: Smile, breathe, be positive

In the Interview Clues series, Employment Solutions staff interview Michele Hazell, Human Resources and Operations Manager with over fifteen years’ experience across the private, non-profit, and government sectors.Question: In addition to looking at technical skills, employers evaluate attitude and assess soft skills during interviews. From your experience, what are some of the signals or responses an interviewer looks for to gauge attitude?Michele Hazell: Body language is one of the most important things in an interview. People often don’t realize the value of a smile. If I am interviewing for a customer service

position, and the applicant doesn’t smile in the interview, I’m not going to consider them for the job. A big part of any role is being able to interact well with people, to smile and be friendly. I have interviewed people who have nailed all of the questions, but I still had that gut feeling that they weren’t quite the right fit, and it usually had to do with body language. A person’s body language will tell you a lot about them. You want to demonstrate warmth and confidence with your body language: smile, make eye contact, offer a firm handshake, relax your shoulders.

Body language is nonverbal language communicated through

facial expressions, gestures, body movements, and tone of voice.

Although interviews can be nerve-wracking, many people underestimate the value of breathing. Breathing helps to release a lot of the anxiety and nervousness; it helps you to stay relaxed. Listen to the question and don’t feel you have to respond right away. If you blurt out responses, it contributes to a nervous body language; or you might miss things,

which could make it seem like you’re not listening. Employers are looking at that in the interview. It’s not only about the questions, but also about your listening skills and ability to respond calmly and effectively. Remember to keep breathing; take time to listen and to put your thoughts together before you respond.

Be positive. Keep your personal issues out of the interview. If you’re talking about previous employers or coworkers, even if your experience wasn’t great, don’t

go into the details. Don’t bad-mouth previous employers. If you speak negatively about former employers in an interview, the interviewer will likely think that that is indicative of your attitude in the workplace. Negativity is a red flag. Also remember that difficult situations are never one-sided. Whether you take responsibility or blame others will be apparent in your attitude. The workplace is a professional environment. Keep your responses professional and positive.
