BIBAK celebrates Canao as a colorful pageantry of our culture

The Benguet Ifugao Bontoc Apayao Kalinga (BIBAK) celebrated “AMMUNGAN

AD MANITOBA” featuring CANAO, feast celebration presented annually to present the Mountain Province festival as a colour manifestation of their unique culture.

Through the presidency of Virgie Gayot and with the help of her officers and volunteers, the program went well especially the dance presentation by some members of the association.A pageantry of sounds and colours, the dancers and singers performed the rituals to the delight of the attendees and special guests. The performers invited the guests to join the dancing of the native dance through the music provded by the gongs. Every one was so excited to dance while the

dancers guided them on to move their hands and bodies.

The current officers of BIBAK include Virgie Gayot, president; Marife Cadag, vice-president; Lily Ann T-e-m;secretary; Nida Abad; asst. secretary; Gigi Mestito, treasuer; Annnie Tabo-oy, auditor; and Wilson Lizardo, pro.

As the grey cloud hovers on the horizon, and a crispy chilly spring wind

rustles on the faces of the throngs of the faithfuls, a spiritual historic event on the Pentecostal Sunday is happening for the more than 10,000 parishioners who have been working to raise fund for the realization of the new $35-million St. Peter’s Catholic Church at the corner of Inkster Blvd. and Brookside.

That Sunday morning, May 15, the 10 acre-lot is dotted with a huge white tent where the concelebrated mass would be held led by Archbishop Richard Gagnon, with the parish priest Msgr. Enrique Samson, Jr and other priests from the various churches in the Archdiocese of Winnipeg; five gold painted shovels with golden ribbons for the ground breaking ceremony, a newly-dug hole where a time capsule would be laid, and the orderly parked cars and vans. It is more than a celebration of faith and love.Quantum Stride of Faith“We know that every journey always begins with a single step. Many of our faithful were overwhelmed with joy when for a quite long wait our parish of St. Peter at last did the groundbreaking to mark the start of the construction of the Multi-Purpose Hall, the first phase of the whole Church structure. And rightfully so for almost 10 years many parishioners have been working and praying so hard for this endeavor which we believe is a God-given mission to our Christian community. They experienced different kinds of trials of faith; both joys and sorrows, encouragements and frustrations, loyalty and betrayals, intertwined with personal commitments and ambitions. But more people remained faithful,

steadfast and solid in their faith. And they were filled with joy, joy that the world cannot give.

However, the groundbreaking was not the first step that we took to start our journey. The actual quantum stride of faith happened when we said our own “Fiat In Me” to God’s will just as Jesus and Mary said “Yes” to the mission that God has given them. The event was a great affirmation that God is always with those whom He has sent, and no amount of human criticisms, jealousies, passivity and negativism can stop God’s design for His people.

The turning of the sod, therefore, brings to the widest perspective of our faith. Our parish trek is only a part of the whole pilgrimage of faith of all mankind. We are all destined to the highest good and that is the Kingdom of God, a kingdom of justice, love, unity and peace. We have to walk hand in hand together for better, for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, because we are our brethren’s keepers.

At this moment, in the name of the Christian community of St. Peter, I would like to express our prayerful gratitude and sincerest appreciation to all who have made that momentous and graceful event meaningful and spiritually enhancing for all those who fully, actively and consciously participated in the activity. Thank you very much to our WESTOY (Worship, Education, Service, Temporalities, Organizing and Youth) ministries including their subcommittees. The $30-million St. Peter’s Church has 3-phase development plan: the 1st phase of St. Peter’s Church building will feature the $12-million multipurpose hall and kitchen expected the completion in the fall of 2017. The other two remaining phases of the V-shaped building structures include a 1,500-seat sanctuary and 75-seat chapel on one side and a classroom at the other side. A basketball court, a labyrinth, a venue for wedding photos,

parking for 640 cars and a grotto where the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary will be included on the grounds of the church.

The fund-raising efforts for the past four years, the parish was able to raise more than $9 million through pledges and cash money through the various concerts, fun runs, golf tournaments, gift card sales and dinner socials. Right now, Luchi Sanchez who has been involved in various fundraising has been campaigning for the Bricks of Faith: a pledge to support by buying a brick at $300 a piece. (See the Ad).

A Thanksgiving Mass was held inside the tent where faithful joined in prayer and thanksgiving for the realization of the new church building. The parades of banners signaled the mass when the various organization movements carried the banners and these include: Brothers Keepers, Cannanean Bible Study Group, Catholic Womens League, Couples for Christ, CFC-Foundation for Family and Life, Families in Christ Apostolate, Friends of Jesus, Jesus My

Lord, Knights of Columbus, Legion of Mary, Light of Christ Charismatic Group and Virgin de los Remedios.

Followed by the Basic Christians Communities (BBC): Amber Trails, Burrows, Garden Grove, Manitoba, Maples 1, Maples 2, Meadows West, Seven Oaks and Tyndall.Gifts were given by families from the parish.

Prayers for the faithful were delivered by various sectors. After the Thanksgiving Mass, the ground breaking ceremony was held with Archbishop Gagnon as the presiding priest. A video was presented tracing the history of St. Peter’s Church.Followed by the signing of documents which were placed in a white tube for the time capsule. At the site, the blessing took place and five key people had the five golden shovels to do the ground breaking ceremony.

After the ground breaking, a sumptuous lunch was served, feeding everybody with Filipino food especially the 13 lechons which had become the favorite of all the attendees.

Duterte: Strongman with a soft spot Some would say that

presumptive President-Elect Rodrigo “Rody” or

“Digong” Duterte is a leftist, which he admits. Some say he is a communist, which he denies. Others say he is pro-China. And a few say he could be the new “Amboy” – that is, “America’s Boy.” Honestly, nobody knows that much about his brand of politics.

Who the hell is Digong then? With so many contradictions on what he had said during the campaign, one might say, “This guy is enigmatic!” He’s got a little bit of the brashness of Donald Trump—which he denies. “Trump is a racist, I am not,” he said. He’s got a little bit of the unpredictability of Vladimir Putin. Hmm… He’s likened to the benevolent dictator Lee Kuan Yew, which he’d probably say, “Heck, I’m better than Lee!” Some say he’s like the late President Ramon “The Guy” Magsaysay, the most popular president the country ever had. And some see him as a real-life embodiment of the movie character “Dirty Harry.” The locals call him “The Punisher” for his zero tolerance against criminals. And what you’ve got is Trump, Putin, Lee, Magsaysay, and “Dirty Harry” all wrapped into one.

Yes, Digong is popular with the masa – common people -- but feared by criminals. It’s the alchemy that forms a brand of “political populism,” one that justifies populism to achieve a political end. And it works best in a country mired in poverty and corruption. It is no wonder then that when he promised to eradicate crime in three to six months, only a few casts doubt that he could do it without declaring martial law, but the majority sees it as flicker of light at the end of a long, dark tunnel. In their minds, if Digong were successful in transforming Davao City from the “Murder Capital of the Philippines” to the safest city in the Philippines and “one of the safest in the world,” then that is good enough to give him their votes. Forget that some skeptics don’t believe these statistical claims, but when the residents of Davao City feel safe, then these become “facts” unless proven otherwise. And who among his political rivals have the credibility to challenge his claims? Fighting corruption

When Duterte entered the presidential race last November, he promised to fight corruption. “If I will become president,

corruption has to stop,” he said. He added that it has been bleeding the nation dry and pushing the people deeper into poverty.

When he was asked if he could really do it, he said he gained his experience of fighting corruption when he worked as a prosecutor for the Tanodbayan, the predecessor of the Ombudsman. He said that he “hounded” the corrupt when he was a Tanodbayan prosecutor. “Once upon a time, I was one of only two Tanodbayan investigators in Mindanao.” With a tinge of populism, he would tell government officials not to shortchange the public. “Don’t grab from people’s mouth what they are about to eat. What is theirs is theirs,” he’d remind them. His passion for the masa gives him credibility that he is capable of fighting corruption.

During the last days of the campaign, Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV dropped a bombshell accusing Duterte of enriching himself while in office. Duterte then opened his bank account to public scrutiny to prove that there was only P17,000 in it, not P211 million as Trillanes had alleged. His quick response added credibility to his character.

By contrast, when Vice President Jejomar Binay, one of his presidential rivals, vowed to fight corruption and go after corrupt officials, nobody believed him. And when asked to disclose his bank accounts, Binay refused. How could the people believe him when he has several plunder charges filed against him before the Office of the Ombudsman, and secretive about his wealth? He has zero credibility. Economic growth

Not content with outgoing President Benigno Aquino III’s economic growth of an average of 6 percent, Duterte plans to pursue a growth of 7-8 percent or higher. “If we want to reduce the poverty rate, we need a higher growth,” his spokesman Peter Laviña said. And this begs the question: Can he do it? Yes, he can. However, as what had happened in the administrations of Aquino and his predecessor Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, who have sustained high economic growths, it did not alleviate the suffering of the poor. In spite of the Philippines’ high economic growth – it’s the “best economy in Southeast Asia today” -- poverty and hunger are on the upswing. Why?

In 1973, World Bank president Robert McNamara spoke about poverty, saying: “Despite a decade of unprecedented increase in the gross national product of the

developing countries, the poorest segments of their population have received relatively little benefit [because] rapid growth has been accompanied by greater maldistribution of income in many developing countries.” He went on to say that “the growth of GNP is essentially an index of the welfare of the upper income groups. It is quite insensitive to what happens to the poorest 40%, who collectively receive only 10-15% of the total national income.”

It wouldn’t take a social scientist or economist a long time to figure out that this was exactly the problem the Philippines faces today, which is: maldistribution of income. Add corruption to the mix and the outcome is: The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Indeed, if there is one challenge that Duterte will be faced with, it’s how he’s going to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor? To find the answer, one has to look at our Asian neighbors, the so-called “economic tigers.” If there is one measure of their success, it’s their growing middle class, which increases as the lower class decreases.

It’s noteworthy to mention also that a lot of social scientists are of the opinion that corruption creates poverty, not the other way around. If Duterte makes good of his promise to fight corruption, he’d have a good start in fighting poverty as well. And with his empathy for the poor, Duterte could feel at ease in starting a peaceful political and economic revolution. Platform for success

Duterte has a three-pronged platform that he plans to implement in the first six months of his presidency, which his spokesman Peter Laviña had outlined as follows:1. Pursue a 24/7 fight against drugs, criminality, corruption, and poverty;2. Call on Congress to pass a law for the election of members of a Constitutional Convention to undertake a “major rewriting” of the 1987 Constitution. The objectives are to institute a shift to a federal parliamentary form of government, and to ease the current restrictions on foreign ownership of land, public utilities, educational institutions, and participation in the exploitation of natural resources; and3. Pursue negotiations and forge peace agreements toward political settlements of the protracted armed conflicts both with the Left revolutionary forces and the Muslim rebel organizations.

One might say that his platform is ambitiously quixotic. But he has one chance to succeed. If he fails, he’d finish his term just like most of his predecessors – mediocre. If he succeeds, he’d be looked upon by generations to come as the Father of the Sixth Philippine Republic. But he can only achieve that if he remains what he is today: a strongman with a soft spot for the masa.

Filipino transgender singer to compete in European contest

Transgender Filipino singer Angel Bonilla will be up against international singers as

she competes at the 2016 Discovery International Music Festival from May 19 to 23 in Varna, Bulgaria.

The Philippine-born Bonilla will competing against contestants from Ukraine, Turkey, Russia, Romania, Moldova, Malta, Italy, Spain, Indonesia, Bulgaria and Azerbaijan. The Discovery International Pop Music Festival is an annual event that was established in 1992.

Celebrity couple Kaye Abad and boyfriend Paul Jake Castillo are now officially engaged.

The photos and highlights of the proposal happened during a surprise birthday party for Kaye on Tuesday night May 17, 2016. The 34-year-old Kapamilya actress then nodded yes as happy tears continued to stream down her face. It was captured through a 38-second video, taken by ABS-CBN’s writer Darla Sauler and made rounds on social media. Kaye and Paul Jake have been together since 2014.

Mama Nors Kitchen opened in the first week of April and the store was passed on to the Pua family/Mama Nors by Cuzina Ca - a great blessing. Prior to the new storefront, Mama Nors' catering business operated of their house and wanted to move a bigger location due to growing demand for Mama Nors' food. It all started with Mama Nors' special atchara as the single food item that gave rise to their new food business.

Noralyn Pua has been in Winnipeg for 24 years. As an immigrant, she decided to not pursue her accounting career, and instead stay at home to take care of her first 2 children while her husband, David worked in the USA on a cruise ship. She has always loved preparing and cooking food for her family.

She has been cooking ever since she was young in the Philippines - trying out different recipes and mixing ingredients to

make it perfect. Her cooking experience developed by taking care of her siblings and parents in Cavite City, Philippines. Nora is a self-taught cook!

David also plays a huge role in Mama Nors' Kitchen. Noralyn's companion and number 1 supporter. He has many backgrounds from being an architect to being a food and beverage manager on the Carnival Cruise Ship. He is a great help to Mama Nors and amazing father figure for his children. Mama Nors' business derived from a side passion.

Noralyn and David are proud full time foster parents, dedicated to teaching family values, rights, and the love of God. Attending several events, parties, social gatherings etc. inspired me to start cooking more for friends and family as a hobby.

Selling atchara bottles was the way we fundraised for this event and then further developed into making more Filipino ulams and desserts for their meet ups.

David Pua remarked, "This all comes from the passion to cook and the servant hood spirit God has given me. It is a blessing to see so many families come into the kitchen and enjoy it with their loved ones. As being the only cook in this

kitchen, the passion God has given me and the happiness from customers is keeps me going when I get overwhelmed with many orders. All the Glory belongs to God."

The skyline of The Strip, Las Vegas, has been changing since the early to late 1940s

when the small building boom began. The first hotel on what would become The Strip was the Rancho Vegas opened in 1941, later destroyed by fire in 1960, followed by Hotel Last Frontier in 1942. The Flamingo by Bugsy Siegel opened in 1946 after World War II with its neon lights and pink flamingo lawn ornaments.

Las Vegas boom continues to accelerate and prosper in the 50's bringing more casino-hotels. The Desert Inn opened in 1950, the Sahara in 1952, then the Sands (closed 1969 where the Venetian now stands), followed in 1955 by Hotel Riviera, the first Strip high rise at nine stories (closed 2015) with Liberace as its featured headliner and its traditional revue "Splash". Then came along the Royal Nevada which was converted to become part of Stardust (which closed in 2006), followed by the Dunes (closed in 1993 where the Bellagio now stands) and Tropicana.

Also taking off with the rise of the resort hotels and casino is the entertainment industry. Consequently, people poured into Las Vegas not just for gambling but also for entertainment thus becoming a part of the "Rat Pack`entertainment experience of the 50s. Notably identified with the Rat Pack was singer-Hollywood actor Frank Sinatra together with Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Peter Lawford, Marilyn Monroe, Shirley MacLaine, and Lauren Bacall. From the Desert Inn to the Sands and to MGM Grand, Frank Sinatra played to sold-out performances for 43 years.

In 1954 then actor and future President of the United States Ronald Reagan made his only appearance on a Las Vegas stage as a song-and-dance man at the Hotel Last Frontier with a singing group male quartet called `The Continentals``. Ronald Reagan`s short-lived Las Vegas act also included chimpanzees which was cancelled because the chimpanzees got distracted and some started drinking.

With the Rat Pack Entertainment The Strip continued to expand and more resorts offer attractions geared toward the youth in an effort to attract families. As luxury resorts appeared so did the retailers, designers from Neiman Marcus to Gucci, Prada, and Tiffany, and also performers like

Cirque de Soleil, Elton John, Celine Dion, Michael Buble, Mariah Carey, and J Lo.

Caesars Palace opened in 1966 with its Roman Empire theme. Its main performance venue is `The Colosseum` which was originally built at a cost of US$95 million for Canadian singer Celine Dion`s show ``A New Day` in 2003. After a departure in 2007 Celine returned to the Colosseum in 2011 with her new show entitled `Celine` which is under contract for 70 shows per year through 2017. We`re mesmerised by her show in January 2016 just before it was cancelled due to her husband`s death. The spectacular show opens with videos submitted by her fans singing to Celine`s Ì Drove All Night ` while holding handwritten signs of affection in front of iconic landmarks from around the world before the superstar walks out on the stage singing `Ì Surrender` with the accompaniment of 31-piece orchestra band and back-up singers and with a 180-degree screen in the background. The two-hour show ended with the Titanic movie theme song `My Heart Will Go On`.

Perhaps the best hotel in town for kids, family-oriented Circus Circus opened in 1968 with an indoor amusement theme park called Adventuredome offering 25 rides and attractions including the Canyon Blaster Roller coaster, 18-hole miniature golf course, an arcade, clown shows, and other carnival-type games.

In 1969 the International Hotel opened, renamed Las Vegas Hilton in 1971, then renamed Las Vegas Hotel & Casino and changed to Westgate Las Vegas in 2014. Newly renovated Westgate has deep roots in Las Vegas history as the hotel Elvis Presley called home back in the late 60s to 70s when he performed more than 800 consecutive sold-out shows. As a tribute to Elvis the hotel added a new Elvis Presley Graceland Wedding Chapel.

Duterte, 16th President of the Philippines, outlines major changes for a much better Philippines

Duterte announces his eight major initiatives to fulfill his commitments to eradicate crime, stop corruption, remove red tape, protect OFWS

In sweeping actions, Presumptive President Rodrigo Duterte has been

announcing major changes in the government to validate his promises during election campaign to overhaul the government systems and to strongly enhance efficiency and effecting in serving the people.

"Change is coming and I promise to make a big change within my six months of presidency. There are many things that can be done. All what we need is the political will to do so," said Duterte in one of the announcements he had done.

And to add more flavour to his colorful campaign, he says:

"I don't have the brilliance of Ferdinand Marcos, the smartness of Fidel Ramos or the eloquence of Miriam Santiago-Defensor. All that I can offer to the Filipino people is a good heart and common sense. Governance after all is just pure common sense,"

Dubbed by the foreign press as "The Punisher", Presumptive President Duterte, during his election campaign sorties, vowed to eradicate crimes and drugs within the early months of his presidency, and establish a military government if there is need to effect the changes. He even warned the Congress to be abolished if his changes are not made.

These are the 8 major changes that Duterte will do when he officially proclaimed as the the 16th Presidents of the Philippines: re-imposition of the death penalty for heinous crimes like rape and drugs; end of the contractulization which violates the rights of the workers to earn an honest living; creation of the Department solely for the benefits of the Overseas Filipino Workers; a curfew for children; the liqour ban, crackdown of karaoke, the lag-lag bala, peace with China and lastly peace for Mindanao.

On contractualization Duterte says: "The moment I assume the presidency, contractrualization will stop. They have to stop it. That is injustice committed against the people of the Republic of the Philippines."

And when Duterte learned that the luggages and boxes of the balikbayan would be brought to strict custom inspection, he warns:"Stop milking the OFWs."

The Bureau of Customs plan to prey into the boxes of goods and presents sent by OFWs to the family.And Duterte has asked the government to stop treating the overseas workers like milking cows. He says:" Hindi nga nila matigil 'yong smuggling ng bigas, karne ng baboy at manok, bawang

at sibuyas. Why don't they address these problems first.

On Mindanao where peace is an elusive dream for over four decades, he says in the final presidential debate: "The war in Mindanao runs deep. You know this may sound funny to you but when Magellan landed in Leyte, Islam was already planted firmly in Mindanao. Nothing will appease the Moro people if you do not give the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL).

And on the creation of a new department: Department of Overseas Filipino Workers, he strongly announces: They (overseas foreign workers) are asked to pay many fees just to work abroad and they are required to get licenses and permits. While abroad, they work hard, but when they come home, they are being shortchanged at the airport, robbed by taxi and by kotong cops." Duterte added that if has his way, children of foreign workers should be given a guaranteed college education.

His concerns for the OFWs run deep. He firmly says: "Gobyerno na ang nagkulang tapos ngayon gobyierno pa rin ang lumalabas na nanggigipit sa kanila. Let us stop treating our

foreign workers like milking cows.They deserve better deals."

Added to the promise of eradicating crimes, he planned to reform the Philippine National Police (PNP) to suppress crime in six months.

And he wowed to continue the current administration to continue its economic plan by hiring some current bureaucratic heads to continue the programs of the government; and furthermore to make the system efficient, Duterte has invited the best of the Filipino to apply for major andminor government jobs. But there is a reminder: "If you send a letter of recommendations from a senator or representatives, wala na kayo (you're out). Only the most qualified applicants will be accepted."

As days go by leading to his frugal oath taking, Duterte has been announcing the members of his inner circle and many more announcements to effect the radical changes in his governance.

Political elites, political pundits and political credits seemed to be quiet these days of the major changes. But Duterte says: "Trillanes, hindi pa tayo tapos." ("Trillanes, we are not finished yet.")

Duterte's musings are loaded with threats and humour but humanely spoken!

Are you ready for President-elect Rodrigo "Digong" Duterte's musings which

will become some powerful quotations that will endure the test of time when the next generations of men and women would use it to give colours and depth to their research articles

and published books. And all what he says are hard hitting, many times controversial remakrs and comments.

Other heads of the state or of the nation, past and present had said their musings which later on became popular quotations. Take Commonwealth President Manuel

Luis Quezon's thundering speech at the US Congress when he was fighting for the independence of his country. He says: "I prefer a government run by Filipinos like hell, rather by the Americans like heaven." Or President John F. Kennedy when he delivers this line: "Ask not what the government can do for you, rather ask what I can do for the government." Another one from Pres. Quezon: "My loyalty to my party ends when my loyalty to my country begins." Ninoy Aquino's famous quotation: "The Filipino is worth dying for."

Elpidio Quirino says: "This country will survive not because I say so, but because our people have proved it in the past, are proving it now, and will prove itin the difficult years to come." How about Pres. Ferdinand Marcos when he muses: "We shall not merely dream, we shall achieve. We are the nation today with courage and vision we shall be more. President Joseph Estrada speaks: "Andres Bonifacio started a revolution against the Spaniards. This time we have another revolution -to stop the lopsided distribution of wealth." Fidel Ramos says: "We cannot improve government except by wiping corruption out of our public life. We cannot have peace and stability- except by stamping out crime and rebellions. And lastly, from Pres. Diosdado Macapagal, he says;"I end with the proud declaration of the truth that the Philippines is irrevocably a land of freedom. The love of freedom is the central trail of the Filipinos.

Now, how about the musings of the President-elect Rodgrigo Roa Duterte? When asked to run for the presidency in 2016, he says: "I'll not be like other

When asked to get an image consultant, Duterte says: "What you see is what you get. This me." Some of the selected quotes the President-elect Duterte: "I never thought I'd be a mayor. Never im my wildest dream." And when he rejected the award as the Best Mayor, he comments: "I did it not for any glory but because that was what the people expected me to do." On the Yolanda, he says: "God must be (have been) somewhere else or he forgot that there is a planet called Earth." And as a Mayor of Davao: "Kung pakikinggan ko 'yan 10 Commandments, pati 'yung pari diyanm wala na akong magagawa sa pagka-Mayor ko." And about his city council: "City council as a body of people sitting as representatives of the people so I felt that everybody must be represented . How can you find peace here is you keep on with your biases."

On Family planning: Duterte says: "Family planning in the country cannot maintain its momentum because you keep the people in total ignorance." And in the government, he says: "The trouble with us in government is that we talk too much, act too slow and do too little. What the country needs is not more laws but more good men in the government." And for his presidency, he writes:"A leader must be a terror to the few who are evil in order to protect lives and well-being of the many who are good.". Added to this, he says: "I could make this sacrifice if only to save this country from being fractured."

When criticized about his hard hitting comments and remarks, he says: "For every profanity, there is a story behind it. People should go beyond my cussing."

And being the 16th President of the Republic of the Philippines, Rodrigo Roa Duterte will make radical changes never experienced before by the more than 100 million people, and what a journey to join him and record all his comments and remarks which will be someday will become a mirror of his governance. And to repeat what he says: "I'll not be like other presidents."

And I am willing to join the journey for the next six years!

Obama congratulates DuterteUS President Barack Obama on Tuesday congratulated Philippines president-elect Rodrigo Duterte on his landslide victory at the polls.

In the call with Duterte, the White House said in a statement that the two leaders affirmed their interest in seeing the relationship continue to grow on the basis of these shared principles. The 71-year-old Duterte has previously said that it is up to American officials to fix relations with him. Duterte has also indicated that he was prepared to hold direct talks with Beijing over a sensitive territorial dispute in the South China Sea. Duterte takes over as president on June 30.
