For the second time in three years, Winnipeg’s Vickar Community Chevrolet

was named the number one GM dealership in the entire nation. Company President Larry Vickar said they sold 1,458 new vehicles for the year, almost 100 units more than its next closest competitor and more new vehicles than any other of the 457 GM dealerships in Canada in 2014.

The company based in Transcona honoured the approximately 200 employees at a celebratory luncheon. Vickar also acknowledge the continuous patronage of its customers, notably the Pollock family from Carman, who has purchased a total of 30 vehicles from the dealership over the years.

On hand for the celebration on was General Motors Canada’s President Stephen Carlisle; John Roth, Vice President, Sales, Service and Marketing; and Glenn Lemmerick, GM Regional Director, Western Region.

In his speech, Carlisle expressed his admiration for the Vickar family, whose history in the auto business extends back close to 70 years. He also cited the inspiration to the auto business provided by the Vickar family as he shared his wish to attend the celebration again next year for the “three out of four” accomplishment.

Grand Opening for The Forks Farmers’ Market This Sunday: Over 30 Vendors,

Entertainment and GiveawaysFrom locally made preserves, to fresh baked goods, to luscious green plants and produce, The Forks Farmers’ Market has a little bit of everything for its grand opening this Sunday. On June 7, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Forks Farmer’s Market will be celebrating their season opening with over 30 vendors, entertainment and free giveaways.

“We are thrilled to have so many great local producers, crafters and artisans and can’t wait to showcase them at The Forks Farmers’ Market,” says Melissa Morrow, Events Manager at The Forks. “It’s our second season of The Forks Farmers’ Market and

we are looking forward to building on the success of last year with even more vendors and services.”

During the grand opening, there will be entertainment by Buskers including Drum Café, Double Trouble, and the Teakle Circus Performance. There is also free face painting and cookies for kids located at the customer service tent. The first 75 customers will also receive a free starter plant or flowers to take home for their garden.

Conveniently located in the Plaza Parking lot, The Forks Farmers’ Market offers an ever-changing lineup of local vendors each Sunday.

Sneak Peek: Snow leopard cubs!

Two snow leopard cubs were born at the Assiniboine Park Zoo on May 15. Both male cubs weigh a little over 1.5kg each and are now enjoying private time with their mom, Batu. It will be another two months before they will be on exhibit at the Zoo.

“From handmade goods to locally grown plants and produce, it is a fantastic showcase of what’s available within our community,” says Morrow. “And if your shopping bags get too full, there is a free pedicab service that will take you from the market to your car.”

Great start to the season

Anglers have been enjoying a fantastic first few weeks of the fishing

season. The weather has been all over the place but that hasn’t stopped people from getting out and enjoying the outdoors. The months of May and June are primetime for targeting gamefish of all species, so if you have been thinking about making a trip now would be the time to do it.

The annual white bass run is at its peak right now and local enthusiasts have been taking full advantage. Good numbers of stripers have been reported at Manigotagan and Pine Falls. The usual hotspots on the west side of Lake Winnipeg such as Wavey Creek, Willow Creek and up to Hecla Island are running a bit behind but should pick up in the next few weeks. On a recent guiding trip, I helped mang Totoy

Caspillo catch his first ever fish in Canada, a huge freshwater drum (silver bass). A quick learner, he went on to catch a few more white bass and drum although not all of them made it into the boat.

Ideal opening week conditions on the Red River gave many fishermen, such as young avid angler Geno Meligrito, an opportunity to hook into loads of leftover greenback walleyes, white bass, and channel catfish. Lower than usual water levels and light current made for great fishing from the banks and on the boats. Recent heavy rainfall has muddied up the water and the current has increased drastically so fishing has slowed a bit in the last week or so. The river should get back to seasonal norms soon. Remember to pick up a ticket for the Lockport Tagged Catfish Contest just in case you should hook into one.

Sturgeon are relatively rare to catch on the Red or Assiniboine, but on all sections of the Winnipeg River they are very targetable. On a recent trip I took to Pine Falls fishing for stripers, I witnessed mang Eric Ramos battle a 52.5 inch sturgeon to the shore. I’ve seen many sturgeon before of all sizes but this monster was the thickest one I’ve ever laid my eyes on. I helped out by carrying it down to the shoreline for release, but I’m sure I broke something in my back doing it. Nutimik Lake and Pointe Du Bois are other popular places to try for one of these prehistoric giants.

Senator Enverga’s statement on Philippine Independence Day

On June 12th, Canadians of Filipino descent will celebrate the 117th anniversary of the declaration of Philippine Independence. It marks the first time that the flag that brings us such pride was flown as a symbol of our united intent of being one country of many peoples. It is a day that is celebrated all around the world by our diaspora, and it stands as a reminder of the freedom for which our forefathers fought, and the freedom that we, kababayans in Canada, are fortunate to have.

This important day is a great time to celebrate the strong ties that our two nations share that were further strengthened during the official State Visit to Canada by His Excellency Benigno S. Aquino III, President of the Republic

of the Philippines. We can also celebrate the increasing people-to-people ties and highlight our growing trade relations. The recent trade mission I participated in, led by Minister of International Trade Ed Fast, to the Philippines, proved the strong economic links we have and the potential for further trade between our countries. It is also a day to celebrate the significant economic, social and cultural contributions that Filipinos make to Canada.

The strong presence of Filipino-Canadians in civic life is testament to our tireless efforts of participating in the democratic process, and we are seeing an increasing number of kababayans in all levels of government. I am truly encouraged by the already confirmed candidates for the upcoming federal elections, and I hope that we will see more before we go to the polls. We should be proud of all of our achievements.

As in the years since my appointment to the Senate of Canada, there will be a Flag Raising Ceremony held on Parliament Hill on June 11, 2015 at 11:30 a.m. to mark this special day.

MaCCFA celebrates 117th Independence Flag raising at City Hall

To celebrate the 117th Independence of the Republic of the Phillipines, a City of Winnipeg Flag Raising

ceremony will be held on June 9, Tuesday, at 10 a.m. at the quadrangle, as the Mayor Brian Bowman has invited various associations to attend this historical event sponsored by the Manitoba Council Canadian Filipino Associations Inc.(MaCCFA)

At the celebration, the Philippine Flag will be raised by His Worship Mayor Brian Bowman, assisted by Dr. Roland Guzman, former Consul General and one of the Filipino pioneers. National Anthem will be led by Mrs. Zeny Calimlim

Fronda, Mrs. Luzon-Manitoba 2014-2015. Opening remarks will be Florencio "Tony"Antonio; invocation by Letty Duque Antonio, president of the Original Filipino Seniors Association of Manitoba (OFSAM), closing remarks by Maggie Chan-Urbano, president of Quezon Province Association of Manitoba.

The committee on program is headed by OFSAM as represented by Letty Duque Antonio, as president; and co-chaired by QPAM led by Maggie Chan-Urbano.

A reception will followed after the flag raising ceremony.

The senator will be featured for the second time in the magazine together with the “King of Philippine Cinema,” in celebration of the upcoming Father’s Day. The magazine said its Father’s Day issue would also contain exclusive photos of the late action star provided by the

senator herself, and tributes from writers and TV personalities Lourd de Verya and Erwin Castillo.

Prior to the upcoming June 2015 issue, Senator Poe was also featured in the magazine’s December 2014-January 2015 issue.

Poe is currently one of the strongest contenders in the presidential race and is running second in the surveys behind Vice President Jejomar Binay.

The Klownz Made the Whole Crowd Go LOL!by aLfie vera mella

The recently finished comedy show billed as Klownz Comedy Bar, held

last May 29, at Club Regent Event Centre, was successful in all fronts. It was full-packed, assuring that the producers, couples Dennis Castañeda and Mary Aromin, got back their investment and

efforts’ worth—ready for the next project; the audience was really satisfied, judging by how they laughed their hearts out all virtually throughout the entire show; and the performers, both the main artists and the opening local acts, engaged the audience really well.

Each of the three Philippine comedians—Boobay, Ate Gay, and Allan K—delivered his own style of comedy in rainbow colors. Boobay’s style revolved around his knack for wordplay, making him the classy stripe among the three clowns. Ate Gay’s equally engaging segment

In short, the Winnipeg leg of the Klownz Comedy Bar 2015 Canadian Tour was a success. Because of this, we can now expect more classy entertainment projects to come from producers Castañeda and Aromin with their production support group.

The National Basketball Association (NBA) will hold its fourth annual NBA Canada Series presented by Bell, featuring a record five teams playing an all-time high four preseason games in Montreal, Ottawa, Vancouver and Winnipeg. Winnipeg’s game will be held on Saturday, October 10 when the Chicago Bulls take on the Minnesota Timberwolves. Tickets go on-sale Saturday, June 6 through Ticketmaster with prices starting at $19.50 (plus fees) and courtside available starting at $175.00 (plus fees).

There are tracks that sonically express Almond’s current musical taste (“When the Comet Comes” and “Minotaur”). Either way, Almond’s flare for catchy Pop melodies is as strong as ever. The English artist Martin Gore is best known as the chief

This year, fresh from the recent Delta Machine Tour (in support of Depeche Mode’s latest album) and from his collaboration with former Depeche Mode bandmate Vince Clarke (now of Erasure), Gore has released another solo album, simply entitled MG. Those who are expecting it to sound like his Counterfeit projects might be disappointed because MG is a purely instrumental affair. The album has its own merits though. It will nevertheless interest enthusiasts of instrumental music in the vein of the works of film scorers like Hans Zimmer and Philip Glass. Some of the tracks also sound like backing tracks to classic Depeche Mode songs

(“Pinking” “Stealth, and “Southerly”). Others

may even remind of the dark mood of early Skinny Puppy and Throbbing

Gristle albums (“Exalt”). However, “Crowly” is

certainly MG’s highlight—catchy and melodically uplifting with its faint echoes

of the bombastic symphonic piece “Santorini” by the Greek-American composer/keyboardist Yanni.Final Note

These are just some of the new records released recently. Considering that 2015 is only nearly half done, there surely remain many more interesting new albums to look forward to in the remaining part of the year.

P-NOY issuesEO on automotive manufacturing programPresident Benigno Aquino III has issued an executive order (EO) for a Comprehensive Automotive Resurgence Strategy (CARS) to revitalize automotive manufacturing in the country.

The EO aims to give way for the implementation of the CARS program, which has been earlier presented to the business sector and is designed to build and grow the parts making capability of the auto industry.

The program is expected to create 200,000 direct and indirect jobs according to Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte, citing the Department of Trade and Industry.

Spratly hold ‘emThe most popular variation

of poker today is called “Texas hold ‘em.”

Whoever shows the best hand wins the game, except where players fold their hands. “Texas hold ‘em” is not a game of chance or luck, it’s a game of strategy – and deception -- where a player’s goal is to turn a weak and losing hand into a winner.

The beauty of this game is that it can be used in any situation including politics, business, and geopolitics. Indeed, its strategic orientation is akin to Sun Tzu’s “Art of War,” which Chinese military strategists have been using for the past 2,500 years.

Today, what we’re seeing in the Spratly archipelago in the South China Sea is the real-life geopolitical variation of “Texas hold ‘em.” Let’s call it, “Spratly hold ‘em.” Unsinkable aircraft carrier

About two years ago, China started building artificial islands in seven coral reefs in the Spratly archipelago. Using huge dredging equipment, sand and rocks were scooped up and dumped on the coral reefs to form artificial islands. One of these “islands” – Fiery Cross Reef – which is 1,400 miles from China’s coast and only less than 200 miles from the Philippines’ Palawan Island, is turning out to be a military outpost consisting of a long runway and deep harbor to accommodate China’s most advanced aircraft and warships. Some observers call it an “unsinkable aircraft carrier.”

A few days ago, China broke ground for the construction of two “multi-functional lighthouses” on two reclaimed reefs. To date, China has reclaimed about 2,000 acres, the equivalent of 1,500 football fields. And when the work is completed, China would become the dominant superpower in the Asia-Pacific region where she can project power all the way to the Second Island Chain.

With China claiming sovereignty over 90% of the South China Sea, she would be in a position to control the trade lanes in the Strait of Hormuz and the Strait of Malacca where 17 million and 15.2 million barrels of oil pass through, respectively, each day. About 80% of China’s foreign oil travels the strait. The region generates more than $5 trillion a year in trade.Malacca dilemma

Should hostility erupt between U.S. and China, all the U.S. had to do to defeat China was to block the Straits of Hormuz and Malacca, which would stop oil

from reaching China. It wouldn’t take long before China drained her strategic oil reserves and her economic and military engines would then come to a screeching halt. Kaput!

Needless to say, China’s leaders know their weakness. And it would be foolhardy for China to do nothing to fix the problem. Since going to war against the U.S. is not a winnable option, China’s solution to her “Malacca dilemma” is to remove her dependence on the Strait of Malacca to transport her oil home. But how?

China had several plans to bypass the Strait of Malacca including building pipelines from Russia, Pakistan, and Myanmar. The China-Myanmar pipeline is the only one that is operational today; however, its transmission capacity is only 22 million tons per year. The Russian and Pakistan pipelines have yet to be built.

A canal has been proposed to be built across the Kra Isthmus in Thailand, which China could use to transport oil; thus, avoiding the Strait of Malacca. But the Kra canal project is still in its conceptual stage and would take at least 10 years to build.

So the next best thing for China to do is claim the oil-rich South China Sea. If she succeeds in doing that, her dependence on Middle East oil would drastically be reduced… or, perhaps, eliminated. She’d have most of the oil she needs right in her own “backyard.” World War III

Recently, the U.S., alarmed by the massive Chinese military build-up in the Spratlys, sent a P-8A Poseidon surveillance plane over the artificial islands. China immediately denounced it. The Global Times, a tabloid owned by the People’s Daily, the ruling Chinese Communist Party’s official newspaper, said that “China is a major world power with nuclear weapons” and warned the U.S. that World War III is inevitable if the U.S. persisted in meddling in China’s right to do anything within her territory. U.S. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter, who was on an important trip to the Asia-Pacific region, warned China: “There should be no mistake: The United States will fly, sail and operate wherever international law allows, as we do all around the world.”

Last May 28, it was reported that China had deployed weapons to the artificial islands. Yep, China had just upped the ante by

militarizing the reclaimed islands. The U.S. could call the bet, raise it or fold her hand.

While the U.S. wouldn’t resort – not at this time -- to armed attack against the Chinese forces on the reclaimed islands, she can continue flying surveillance planes over the islands and send warships to within 12 miles of the islands, which she had implied earlier. Boomers

How China is going to react to such incursion is anybody’s guess. But for sure China would lose face if she doesn’t repel the “invading” Americans. And “losing face” is a big thing in Oriental cultures, which leaves China with only one option – attack the “invading” Americans. But how can China fight the U.S. Seventh Fleet, which has around 60 warships, 350 aircraft, 38,000 naval personnel, and 22,000 marines deployed to the Indo-Asia-Pacific region?

But the U.S. Navy’s ace in the hole is her fleet of 14 nuclear ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs). Known as “boomers,” each submarine carries 14 multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles (MIRVs). Each MIRV is a ballistic missile payload containing 24 nuclear warheads, each of which is capable of being aimed independently to hit a target. With 336 individual warheads in each “boomer,” they add up to a total of four megatons – the equivalent of more than 2,500 Hiroshima atomic bombs. At least four SSBNs (the actual number is classified) are on “red alert” 24/7, which means that they can fire their MIRVs when ordered by the Commander-in-Chief.

On the other hand, China’s offshore combat capabilities are limited. She has one aircraft carrier, which has yet to be operational. At this time, China has about 100 land-based DF-5 Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs), which are capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads. They have a range of 8,000 miles. The only problem with the liquid-fueled DF-5 missiles is that it will take at least two hours to fire them, which means that the MIRVs from the American “boomers” could wipe them out before they’re launched.

In a nuclear war, a second-strike capability is a country’s nuclear deterrence from a first-strike attack. And the key to nuclear deterrence is to make sure that your enemy knows that you could survive a first-strike attack and have the ability to retaliate with a devastating second-strike counter-attack, which begs the question: Is China bluffing and pretending that she has the means to destroy the U.S. in a first-strike attack?

In poker, the number one rule is: “Bluff only if you have the best hand.” That’s true in a game of “Texas hold ‘em.” It should also be true in “Spratly hold ‘em.”

Thousands of North End Youth to have chance to play more basketball with new

facility at Norquay Community CentreCreating Healthier Neighbourhoods by Working with Young

People Who Want to Give Back: Minister CaldwellThousands of young people in Winnipeg’s north end will be able to play more basketball this year on a new outdoor court at the Norquay Community Centre, Municipal Government Minister Drew Caldwell announced today.

“Improving the recreation facilities in Winnipeg will allow urban young people to discover the physical b enefits that come from a healthy lifestyle,” Minister Caldwell said. “We also know that world-class facilities attract world-class events, whether it’s the FIFA Women’s World Cup or a youth-organized event like the 100 basketballs Tournament.”

“Basketball has done a lot to keep me out of trouble. I want more kids to have more opportunities to pursue their passion for sports,” said Lenard Monkman, a youth leader in the north end. “Quality sport facilities mean more chances for young people to come together and inspire each to play harder and give their best.”

“All over the province young people will tell you they are proud of who they are, proud of their hometowns and neighbourhoods, and that they want to give back,” Jobs and the Economy Minister Kevin Chief, as he represented Minister Caldwell at the 100 Basketballs Tournament, a North-End neighbourhood event organized by Monkman. “When we stand with Lenard and the youth he supports, we are showing

them how important they are to us and to Manitoba’s future.”

The province is providing the Norquay Community Centre with funding for a new, state-of-the-art outdoor basketball court. The project will include a new outdoor basketball court to replace two current courts that have fallen into disrepair. The proposed outdoor basketball court project includes asphalt foundation with proper surfacing, nets and backboards, fencing and outdoor lighting, Minister Chief said, adding work on the project is expected to start in June.

“The young people we work with are ecstatic. A new court will give them an avenue to exert some energy, do something positive and have some fun,” said Rita Richard, manager, Norquay Community Centre.

In August 2014, the Manitoba government committed $140,000 to the project through the Winnipeg Community Infrastructure Program, a three-year, $7.5-million program that provides grants to support not-for-profit or city-owned community recreation facilities within Winnipeg.

Hundreds of people came out to the 100 basketballs tournament on Sunday, May 31 at the Ralph Brown Community Centre. Over 200 basketballs were distributed to North End kids during the Family Fun Day organized by Lenard Monkman and Aboriginal Youth Opportunities. Chief Devon Clunis led a Winnipeg Police team in an all-star game against Kevin Chief and the Neechi Commons All-Stars. Point Douglas MLA Chief also announced that the provincial government has committed $140,000 to a new state of the art outdoor basketball court at the Norquay Community Centre to be built this summer.

Remembering the Winnipeg General Strike of 1919by Levy Abad

Last May 15, I attended one of the events of the May Works 2015 Festival at the Ukrainian

Labour Temple dubbed as “96 Years Later: The Legacy of the Winnipeg General Strike.” I was with some friends who are also members of the Winnipeg Multicultural Human Rights Forum, Simon Baer and Pablo Herrera, Chair of the Chilean Human Rights Forum. Before going to this event, we were at the Meet Me at the Bell Tower event at Selkirk.

Arriving at the Ukrainian Labour Temple reminded me of the historic struggles that happened in the past here in Manitoba. Sitting and looking at the architecture of the building brought back memories when I was still a member of the cultural arm of one of the biggest unions in the Philippines, the May First Movement (or Kilusang Mayo Uno), which fought for the welfare of the workers and the whole country in general. I remember writing

songs that were sang in big rallies against abusive regimes as well as singing anti-fascist songs like “Viva la Quince Brigada,” “Levántate” of Victor Jara, and songs of Bertolt Brecht. It took me back to the days of organizing unions through cultural approach, attending cultural workshops, and giving songwriting workshops in different parts of the old country.

That night we saw some of the good activist friends whom we met in the community, including Dennis Lewycky, former Executive Director of Social Planning Council, who invited me to attend the event. He assured me that I was going to enjoy the musical. He was right. I really appreciated it for having reminded me of those times when I was still a trade-union cultural activist in the Philippines. I recalled the International Solidarity Affairs in which brothers and sisters from different unions rendered cultural

presentations depicting the struggles from different parts of the world to end human exploitation by wicked influential and powerful individuals.

There was this group of four artists who sang songs from Danny Schur’s musical Strike!—songs that depicted the workers’ struggles in 1919, songs that told of issues that mattered way back in time, especially from an ideologically conscious perspective and cultural pieces that constitute the spirit of the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike. The lyrics of the songs dealt with issues like unemployment insurance, the weekend, equal pay for equal work, workers’ compensation, health benefits, farm labour rights, minimum wage, pension benefits, sick leave, parental leave, civil rights, and grievances. Such rights have long been entrenched in Manitoba. In the Philippines, similar struggles for these rights were bloody. I could not help but think of my friends who were felled by bullets because of their firm stance for the welfare of the workers.

As an artist and a cultural activist, I am well aware of the role of the workers in improving human conditions and I know that songs with social content can be used as a powerful tool in rousing people to stand up for their rights, achieve victory, and defend the historical gains. In moving marginalized and oppressed people, a good cultural presentation is more powerful than a boring speech full of rhetoric. Only an ideological cretin will fail to recognize this. When a movement fails to consciously use culture as an aid to raising consciousness, it can be considered a dull movement not worthy of emulation.

Ninety-six years ago, the North End was the centre of gravity of the struggle to improve the condition of the working class. The intensity of the Winnipeg General Strike was such that the reactionaries of the past were not able to crush it. Most of the issues enumerated have already been legislated into laws; and nowadays, the goal of reaction is to gut or reverse the historical gains of the great Winnipeg Strike of 1919. I can still hear the thunderous chants of the movement that can be likened to the song “We Shall Overcome.”

It doesn’t matter if people forget about it. What matters most is that there is a group that remembers and will continue to raise the banner of struggle if need be. The workers also deserve a rest in the great struggles of life. What the oppressors should worry about is the reality of the resurrection of the working class movement. Viva 1919!

And as the African-American social activist Frederick Douglass once said: “Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.”

The Annual Santacruzan, others call it Mayflower Festival, and the feast of

San Isidro Harvest Festival, partron saint of farmers, took a center stage at the Maples Community Centre last Saturday, exhibiting religious fervour with sounds and colours plus the presence of sagalas, with some guest queens and local beauties.
