Justin Merluza wins two major awards at the Wonderful Wedding Show 2015!

Justin Merluza, designer and owner of Just-In Couture Event Decor, is in the Cloud 9, a feeling of consummate joy and fulfillment after winning two major awards at the recently concluded Wonderful Wedding Show 2015 at RBC Convention Centre.

The 1st major award is the hotly coveted Wonderful Wedding Show's Best Booth of 2015, voted by all the participants/vendors/exhibitors of the most popular wedding show, edging out a company which had been a perennial winner. And now Justin Merluza of Just-In Couture Event Decor, awarded the highest honor, with so much complements and recognitions.

"I am very lucky and happy for this award. This is my major accomplishment in my second

year to join this prestigious wedding show, and because of our hardwork and dedication, especially my family, we are recognized for what we have done, to bring my creativity into the highest level," says Justin Merluza.

For many years only one company had been winning this coveted prize, but this year, 2015, it is the turn of Justin Merluza who joined the wedding show only last 2014.

This year marks my fourth visit to The Wonderful Wedding Show. And yes, if

you’re wondering, every year still manages to be as wondrous as the last.Ironically, I visited the show only once for my own wedding. That was last year, when I had the chance to seriously soak in the grandeur of it all.

If you haven’t been to the show before - whether you’re a bride-to-be, wedding party member, or general wedding enthusiast – I recommend giving it a go. I can’t understate the number of things to see and do, whatever

As a former bride and frequent wedding show visitor, I’ve figured out a few tips to make the most of your trip:•Know what you need. When I went to the show after my engagement, I wrote out a list of vendors I wanted to see. Perhaps you’re still exploring options for videographers, or you heard great things about a certain florist and you want to see their work. I suggest singling out a few booths on your “must see” list, because combing through each one individually will most certainly be the death of you.•Keep an open mind. Maybe you stumbled upon a photographer’s

website and thought they were the perfect fit for your wedding day. If you’re on the verge of booking a vendor, take the time to visit them in person. Though their portfolio is a big factor in your decision making process, it’s also important to gel with the business you decide to hire. Most of them are as nice as spice, but it never hurts to reaffirm your confidence in them.•Fill out those ballots! The wedding show is notorious for passing around giveaways out of wazoo. You’ll pick up plenty of bags, brochures, business cards and free food samples (my

favourite part, personally). Most importantly, enter into as many draws as possible. Vendors will give away free wedding packages to attract guests to their booths. The most efficient way to sign up is by pre-print your name, address, phone number and e-mail address onto adhesive mailing labels. Another Interesting Year in Music On Some Alternative Rock / New Wave Albums in 2014 (part 1)

As I have done for a few years now, I write my end-of-the-year article listing

albums released in the previous

year. This disproves again the claim of many people that "music nowadays is crap," "there are no more interesting artists or music

nowadays," or "they don't make good music anymore."

People who think that way are simply not doing their homework. They are most likely basing their claim on only what they hear on radio stations or see on commercial TV. Or, they just simply stopped listening to new music and decided to content themselves in the music of their younger days.

There's nothing wrong with limiting one's listening pleasure to the music of one's youth, but to claim that the reason for doing so is the lack of good new music in the current generation is invalid, narrowminded, and shortsighted.

In the Internet age, any passionate music enthusiast should be able to know whatever is new in music, whatever genre that might be.

Here are some albums, may be classified under New Wave / Alternative Rock, that were released in 2014. They made the year as musically refreshing and interesting as any other year since vinyl records, cassette tapes, and CDs were invented. Pope Francis experiences Filipino hospitalityPope Francis and the papal entourage was recipient of the famous Filipino hospitality during his five-day state visit and apostolic journey to the Philippines.In a CBCP News post, Papal Nuncio to the Philippines Archbishop Guiseppe Pinto said the Holy Father and the authorities in Vatican want to thank the Filipinos for the best hospitality they received everywhere they went. Vatican Radio reported that Pope Francis sent a telegram to President

Aquino thanking him for his meaningful visit to the country.

Pope Francis, his entourage, and Vatican-accredited media that include 14 Filipino journalists left Villamor Air Base in Pasay City on board “Shepherd One,” a special Philippine Airlines flight, at 10:12 a.m. last Monday, January 19. They arrived in Rome’s Ciampino Airport at about 5:26 p.m., Monday, January 19, (12:26 a.m., Jan. 20, Manila time), the Vatican Radio announced.

Mayweather must confirm fight until this monthFilipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao has given Floyd Mayweather until the end of the month to confirm that the unbeaten American will fight him on May 2.

Pacquiao says he and promoters Top Rank have agreed to terms that include giving Mayweather a 60 percent cut of the proceeds in a megafight, including issues such as the gloves to be used and a drug testing protocol. Pacquiao added that the

deadline is necessary so that his team can choose another opponent if Mayweather refuses to sign the May 2 Las Vegas fight.

Mayweather (47-0, 26 knockouts) and eight-division world champion Pacquiao (57-5-2, 38 knockouts) are two of the greatest boxers of their generation and experts believed that the fight would be a mega hit that will shatter all box-office and television revenue records.

Cebu Pacific apologizes for holiday flight messCebu Pacific CEO Lance Gokongwei apologized before lawmakers during the House panel hearing to explain the Cebu Pacific’s side on allegations that its management allowed overbooking despite the peak season, resulting in flight delays, cancellations and chaos.

Gokongwei denied that overbooking is the primary cause of the holiday fiasco. He cited other factors namely undermanned operations, absenteeism of staff, as well as Cebu Pacific’s failure to anticipate the effects of the holiday peak season. The company was fined P52 million by government for the holiday debacle.

Expression of joy and faith overwhelm Pope Francis

Pope Francis is back in Rome after a historic pastoral and state visit to the Philippines where he was greeted by millions of cheering people who braved rain and steaming heat and waited several hours just to get a glimpse of him.

While travelling to the Philippines from Sri Lanka, the Pontiff said he wants to send a message to the poor who face "social, spiritual and existential" injustices. In a country composed of 80 million Catholics but with a quarter of the population living below the poverty line, the call for the church to embrace the poor has struck a deep chord.

Speaking during his flight from the Philippines onboard the Italy-bound Philippine Airlines chartered plane, Pope Francis

shared that what he like best during visit was the “gestures” by which Filipinos expressed their joy and faith. He said the Filipinos reacted from deep inside their heart, encompassing feelings from faith, love, the family, delusion, and the future. He acknowledged the actions of the fathers who brought their children and the mothers with sick kids who proudly showed them to him to be blessed. The Pontiff also noted the capacity of Filipinos to celebrate and the ability to show genuine joy amidst the hardship of life.

Pope Francis also revealed that he was shaken in Tacloban which he also visited to console the survivors of Typhoon Haiyan. Known in the Philippines as Typhoon Yolanda, the storm

was one of the strongest tropical cyclones ever recorded that killed or left missing more than 7,000 people and badly destroyed villages in this central Philippine province in 2013. The Pope said the mass in Tacloban was emotionally moving for him when he saw the people standing still and praying. He added that he felt as though he was annihilated (“wiped out”) and almost couldn’t speak.

Pope Francis also remembered Kristel Padasas, the young woman who died in a freak accident after attending the Holy Mass.

The Pope also discussed other issues such as the Charlie Hebdo Paris attacks and birth control, among others while on the plane. The Jesuit-run America Magazine ran a full transcript of Pope’s plane press conference.

Meanwhile, President Aquino also spoke to Pope

Francis on the determination of his government to eradicate poverty, notwithstanding that his office e has been at loggerheads with the local Roman Catholic Church over a 2012 reproductive law that promotes artificial birth control.

Pope Francis is the fourth pontiff to visit the Philippines. The government declared a three-day public holiday in Metro Manila to clear the traffic and to enhance security measures.

The people’s pope, the poor’s hopePope Francis’s visit to the Philippines couldn’t have come at a better time. Beset with corruption scandals, social problems, hunger, poverty, and the catastrophic destruction caused by super typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda, Pope Francis comes at a time when the people – particularly the poor -- seek spiritual intervention to lift them from the social morass that plagues their lives.

It did not then come as a surprise that upon Pope Francis’ arrival at the Villamor Airbase, tens of thousands of Filipinos braved the rain and lined the streets for hours just to catch a glimpse of their beloved Santo Papa (Holy Father) in his Pope mobile on his way to the Apostolic Nunciature where he was billeted during his stay.

The following day, he flew to Tacloban City in Leyte – defying typhoon Amang – to meet the surviving families of the victims of Yolanda. And just like in Manila, the people of Tacloban braved the punishing rainstorm to demonstrate their love for “Papa Francisco” as he rode in his Pope mobile wearing a yellow raincoat, waving to the enthusiastic Leytenos.

On the third day, Pope Francis held Mass at the University of Santo Tomas. Before the Mass, he had an emotional encounter with former street children. Glyzelle Palomar, a 12-year-old taken in by a church charity, wept as she asked how God could allow children to descend into prostitution and drug addiction. “She is the only one who has put a question for which there is no answer and she wasn't even able to express it in words but in tears,” the Pope told those who were at the event.

On the fourth day of his visit, Pope Francis held an afternoon Mass at the Quirino Grandstand in Luneta. The event drew a crowd of more than six million, a new world record for a Papal Mass. The devotees came from all over the country. They started arriving in the early hours of the day and waited standing in the rain for hours on end, which makes one wonder: How many more would have attended the Mass if it wasn’t raining?

Soaked in the rain, many of them had nothing on but clothing drenched wet and cold. Indeed, it was the ultimate display of their devotion to that one person whom they hope would deliver them from the clutches of social and

moral decadence that is plaguing the country today.Activism

Known for his compassion for the poor, the powerless, and the hopeless, Pope Francis belongs to the Society of Jesus -- or Jesuits -- a militant organization that is noted for its educational, missionary, and charitable works. Argentine-born, Pope Francis is the first Jesuit who was elevated to the papacy of the Roman Catholic Church. It is no surprise then that his militant discipline and activism have brought him to the forefront in the fight for social justice. Indeed, he has been making waves that no other pope before him had dared.

His trip to the Philippines was no exception. With the culture of corruption that pervades in government, Pope Francis saw an opportunity to impart his thoughts when he paid a courtesy call on President Benigno Aquino III in Malacañang on January 16.

In his speech before a group of high government officials and members of the Diplomatic Corps, the Pope said: “As many voices in your nation have pointed out, it is now, more than ever, necessary that political leaders be outstanding for honesty, integrity and commitment to the common good. In this way they will help preserve the rich human and natural resources with which God has blessed this country.”

His tone and choice of words in his speech in Malacañang was polite compared to some of his past sermons and homilies that often include fire-and-brimstone language. In one of his daily morning Mass inside his Vatican residence, he delivered a fiery sermon against corruption where he quoted a passage from the Bible where Jesus said: “Some sinners deserve to be tied to a rock and thrown into the sea.”

In another sermon, he said: “Christians who lead ‘a double life’ by giving money to the Church while stealing from the state are sinners who deserve to be punished.” He criticized Catholics who enrich themselves from graft. “Those who take kickbacks have lost their dignity and give their children dirty bread,” he said. He likened corruption to drug addiction. “We might start with a small bribe, but it’s like a drug,” he said.

The Holy Father also described people engaged in corruption as “whitewashed tombs,” saying that “they appear beautiful from the outside, but

inside they are full of dead bones and putrefaction.” “A life based on corruption is varnished putrefaction,” he said.

These sermons remind me of the Philippine lawmakers who were involved in the Pork Barrel Scam, one of the worst – if not the worst -- corruption scandals in the country. It’s a well-known fact that Philippine politicians are some of the most religious people… at least in appearance. They’re very generous in supporting charitable causes. But where they get the money they donate makes one wonder if they earned it legitimately.Faux pas

The low point during the Papal visit was during President Aquino’s speech following Pope Francis’ speech in Malacañang. Aquino noted that the Church had “always been at the forefront of championing the rights of all, especially those of the marginalized.” But he said that he find it hard to understand why members of the clergy -- once advocates for the poor, the marginalized, and the helpless -- have suddenly become silent in the face of the previous administration’s abuses, which he claimed his administration is still trying to rectify to this very day.

“In these attempts at correcting the wrongs of the past, one would think that the Church would be our natural ally. In contrast to their previous silence, some members of the clergy now seem to think that the way to be true to the faith means finding something to criticize, even to the extent that one prelate admonished me to do something about my hair, as if it were a mortal sin. Is it any wonder then, that they see the glass not as half-full, or half-empty, but almost totally empty. Judgment is rendered without an appreciation of the facts,” Aquino said.

The question is: Why did Aquino chastise the Catholic clergy in front of the Holy Father, right inside his palace? And to what end? Does he expect the Pope to punish the prelate who suggested that he do something about his hair? And why did he even mention the “abuses” under former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s administration? What has that to do with the Pope’s pastoral visit?

I think it’s time for Aquino to grow up and stop throwing tantrums in front of his guest who happens to be the spiritual leader of the two billion Catholics that inhabit the Earth.

Aquino should be thankful that the Vicar of Christ had included the Philippines in his itinerary during his presidency, the fourth such occasion in Philippine history. That should add a feather in his cap.

And at the end of the day, as we bid the Holy Father, “Arrivederci Papa Francisco,” he will be remembered for a long time as the people’s pope, the poor’s hope.

Pope Francis is the pope of the people!

With more than six millions devotees who braved the rain and cold

at the Luneta papal mass, Pope Francis has become the religious fortitude, an inspiration and powerful moving spiritual father of more than 80 million Roman Catholics in the Philippines, and most specially, the hope and the sunshine of million of children whom he has hugged, kissed, embraced, smiled, whispered and talked with his voice, so assuring, and so fatherly.

Even the international and local media had captured the religious intensity of the people, and ever smiling, always waving Pope Francis. As described by

Caroline Wyatt, BBC religious correspondence, she broadcasts: "The atmosphere has been electrifying, despite the heavy rains, Pope Francis' visit has been a resounding success. There's been enormous enthusiasm for the Pope and themes he's focused on: helping the poor, the importance of the family, and protecting the environment."

Other broadcasts and print media had played the warmest welcome by the Filipinos, with more 80 millions are Roman Catholic, on how they braved the rain and waited for many hours, just to see Pope Francis, waving and smiling in the jeepney like pope's mobile.

"Salamat sa Diyos at nakita ko ng personal si Papa Francis, binabasbasan niya ako, at sa tulong ng Diyos, mahi-heal ako sa aking sakit, " a forty-year old woman said when asked by one of the reporters. Other woman said: "Kahit hindi ko nakita si Papa Kiko, masaya na ako. at kasama ako dito sa daming taong naghihintay sa kalsada."

Upon his arrival in the Philippines to start the 5-day visit, the Filipinos in millions, waited and cheered along the routes leading to the airport, to say mass at the Manila Cathedral,to UST, and to Luneta for the final mass. And when he arrived in Tacloban, despite the signal No. 2 of tropical tyhpoon Amang, he was able to meet and greet thousands of people along the way, during the mass at the Tacloban airport; and in Palo, Leyte, where he apologized for cutting short his visit. And he blessed all the Leytenos, and those devotees/typhoon victims who attended from the neighboring provinces.

After the mass, one volunteer died due to the bad weather and Pope Francis consoled with the father of the victim and gave him a rosary and a religious medal.

Before the mass in Luneta on the last day of his visit, Pope Francis met the more than 20,000 youth and children at the Pontifical University of Santo Tomas where the rally for the youth was held.

With so much meaning of his presence and his messages, the youth and children listened intently to the Holy Father and what caught most of the attention when he mentioned about the three languages: the language of the mind (to think); the language of the heart (to feel) and the language of giving. He requested the audience to repeat the three languages. And when a 12-year old girl, Glyzelle Palomar, a former street child, wept as she told her story and asked why God had allowed children to suffer so much. Touched by the girl's action, Pope Francis replied:

"Only when we are able to cry we are able to come closer to respond to your questions.

If you can only record all the wisdom of Pope Francis, one can be totally enlightened his purpose in visiting the Philippines.Even in the early preparation, he wanted to meet the youth and the children, no lavish receptions and gatherings, more time to the Yolanda typhoon victims, and most important, no grrandstanding by politicians.

In one of his qoutes: "Through sin, man has destroyed the beauty and unity of human family creating structures which perpetuate poverty, ignorance and corruption."

While heading to Rome, millions of Filipinos still chanting: Papa Francesco! And requesting him to return.

Yes, Pope Francis, an Argentinian, is the pope of the people, especially for the more 80 million Filipinos who have gained so much blessing,so much faith and hope, for better life.

Over 700 anglers attended the Kids Fishing For A Cure ice fishing derby

on December 28, 2014. A little over $22,000 was raised for this fantastic organization. They do invaluable work supporting families who have children diagnosed with cancer. Among those who attended were Totoy and Myrna Cleofas. Mang Totoy is a longtime Filipino Journal reader who decided to try his hand at ice fishing for the first time

after reading an earlier article. Even though it was very cold that first trip out, he and his wife are determined to ice some fish before the end of winter. I had the flu over the holidays unfortunately but that didn't stop my wife Divine and our girls from competing at the derby. They didn't catch any fish but still had fun trying and proving that they don't need me to go fishing. Get out and enjoy a winter activity this season.



CDI and Reeves College are now paying attention to the dynamic demands of local immigrants who have joined the Canadian society

and are yet to immerse fully by becoming financially established. CDI and Reeves College had previously focused its marketing

efforts to recruit local Canadians to its student body as one of the leading providers for training in various fields including office administration, pharmacy assistant, and oil and gas admin assistant, IT and especially in health care programs such as medical office administration and pharmacy assistant.

To continue its efforts in providing more opportunities for new immigrants of Canada, Reeves College and CDI college decided to hold a monthly joint info session to provide the public with valuable information about employment and education opportunities, working with job agencies in the area. British band Architects makes Philippine debut

The British metalcore band Architects is set to make their debut in Philippine

soil. The band which hailed from Brighton, England is composed of vocalist Sam Carter, guitarist and keyboardist Tom Searle and his twin brother, drummer Dan Searle, as well as bassist Alex Dean.

Architects has already produced six albums since 2004. The band’s latest work is “Lost Forever, Lost Together,” which

won the coveted Best Album award at this year’s Kerrang! Awards.

Small Town Students Can Discover, Achieve and Belong at UWinnipegBy David Garvey

Catherine Nado knew from an early age that her love of science and desire to one day work in the medical field would require post-secondary education. Growing up in La Broquerie, Manitoba, a town of just over 1,000 residents about 70 km southeast of Winnipeg, she also knew that this meant having to leave her rural home to pursue her studies.

After careful consideration of her post-secondary options, she realized she needed a university that offered both high quality science labs and small class sizes, to help ease the transition from a small K-12 school of 300 students to university life.

Catherine chose the University of Winnipeg, starting her first year as a Biopsychology major, which combined her love of science and her emerging interest in psychology. Even in the first term she was able to take advantage of the state-of-the-art teaching labs at the Richardson College for the Environment and Science Complex, which keeps the lab classes capped at 24 students each - a nice small class where you can easily get to know your professor and fellow students.

The commute to the UWinnipeg from La Broquerie takes about 45 minutes, so for her first year she decided to live on campus, at McFeetor’s Hall Great-West Life Student Residence, rather than make the drive every day. As a self-described shy person, Catherine was suddenly socializing with other students from around

the world while in residence. UWinnipeg currently hosts over 500 international students from 63 different countries, and many of those students choose to live on campus. She also enjoyed the cultural opportunities that the downtown offers, in particular the live music scene.

This past fall, Catherine started working as a student ambassador for UWinnipeg’s Student Recruitment office, helping with campus tours and other big functions. Just recently she also started working as a research assistant for one of her professors.

Catherine credits her professors with helping her discover her future career options,

and with making sure she had the right undergraduate study program to meet those career goals. Now in her third year of studies, she is more than halfway towards her 4-year Honours degree in Psychology. She credits Professor Vesna Miloševic-Zdjelar as being particularly helpful.

“In my opinion, UWinnipeg's best quality is its abundance of opportunities,” she says. “Hands-on labs, work-study programs that allow me to gain research experience, a downtown location that makes exploring the city easy, and a smaller, more communal campus that facilitates getting to know other students.”

Winnipeg Jets Report

The Winnipeg Jets could arguably be the surprise team of the National

Hockey League this year. Over the past few years, their blue-

collar approach has seen them battle for a playoff spot but landed just short of expectations. This year, they have quietly become a Central division contender and

have gained the attention and respect of the entire league.

After a 5-1 demolishing of the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Jets hit a brief stumbling block. Without the services of star forward Joe Thornton, the San Jose Sharks still managed to walk away from the MTS Centre with two points. With the Sharks leading 2-1 in the third period, newly acquired Jay Harrison scored for the Jets to tie the game. With time winding down, Marc-Edouard Vlasic scored with under five seconds left off a set play giving the Sharks a 3-2 win. Michael Hutchinson stopped 34 of 37 shots for Winnipeg in a losing cause.

Penalties have been the weakness for the Winnipeg Jets and the Arizona Coyotes exploited that at home. Ex-Jet Shane Doan recorded a goal and two assists on the power play and the Coyotes netminder Mike Smith saved 34 shots in a 4-1 win. Mathieu Perreault scored the lone goal for Winnipeg.

In past years, a west coast road trip spelled trouble for

the Jets. Cup contenders like the Los Angeles Kings and the Anaheim Ducks usually added to Winnipeg's losing streak. After dropping two straight, the Jets needed to compose themselves and salvage their three game road trip.

Matching firepower with the Los Angeles Kings is usually a recipe for disaster but the Jets did just that. Red-hot Mathieu Perreault scored a goal and an assist to give the Jets a 3-2 lead after one period. After a scoreless second, the defending champs responded with two goals to jump ahead 4-3. Zach Bogosian responded just two minutes after and tied the affair and sent the game into overtime. With overtime solving nothing, Jets goalie Michael Hutchinson made sure that no puck would pass him in a shootout. Bryan Little scored the only goal in the shootout giving his team a 5-4 victory.

On an emotional night in Anaheim, ex-Jet Teemu Selanne was honoured by the Ducks raising his number 8 into the rafters of the Honda Center. The Jets looked like they would escape California with 4 points. Winnipeg held a 4-2 lead going into the third thanks to Mark Scheifele's goal and assist. Anaheim rallied with two third period goals and stole the extra point beating the Jets in a shootout 5-4. Rikard Rakell had a pair of goals for the Ducks.

Winnipeg returned home and bounced back in a big way. The Jets pounced on the Florida Panthers early and often. Mathieu Perreault has proven that his acquisition in the off-season was worth every penny. Perreault continued his hot streak scoring four goals in an 8-2 drubbing of the Panthers and also gave coach Paul Maurice 500 career wins.

Perreault talked about his career night and the atmosphere at the MTS Centre.

"I had chills almost as I was sitting on the bench, I almost couldn't believe it," Perreault said. "I had a couple chances to get five goals. It was one of those crazy nights."

Winnipeg headed to the Lonestar state to take on the Dallas Stars. Jets goalie Ondrej Pavelec showed he still has some magic left in him. Pavelec was magnificent stopping 46 of 47 Stars shots leading the Jets to a 2-1 win. Evander Kane scored shorthanded in the third period that held to be the game winner.

In an another statement game, the Jets got a rare sweep of the Chicago Blackhawks in their home building. Captain Andrew Ladd and Bryan Little had a goal and an assist each powering the Jets to a 4-2 win. Hutchinson backstopped the Jets and has had the Blackhawks number all year. It wasn't all good news. Mathieu Perreault took a cheap shot to the arm from Hawks Daniel Carcillo and will miss some time.

The Jets continued their winning ways at home and avenged their loss to the Coyotes. The Coyotes rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the third period but Pavelec turned aside all three Coyotes shooters in the shootout for the 4-3 win.

The Jets have quietly risen in the Western Conference standings and only trail the Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues by two points. Winnipeg will look to extend their winning streak to five games as they welcome the Columbus Blue Jackets to the MTS Centre followed by a two game road trip to Pennsylvania to take on the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers.

Pop ballads. She always made sure that the radio dial was on her favorite FM station, Mellow Touch (DWLL 94.7). Because I grew up in the ’70s with a regular diet of music, courtesy of our family’s well-used turntable in our house and the jukebox in

12/21 also took the occasion to release a demo CD that contained their original songs "Bakit Mo Ko Iniwan?" and “Adventure.” Opening for them at that gig was Roman’s former band The 22nd Band. the restaurant that my family used to own, I enjoyed listening too with the favorite songs of that aunt of mine. One of the Filipino balladeers my aunt was really into during those days was Marco Sison. According to her, she really liked Sison because he had an amiable and charming personality and a soft and gentle voice. I remember my aunt’s

excitement every time Sison was on TV or his songs would play on the radio. She would rush to put the volume higher, and she would begin to sing along to the son0067. To this day, I always associate Sison’s songs to that aunt of mine. Her most favorite song by Sison, which consequently became a favorite of mine too, was “Si Aida, si Lorna, o si Fe.”

Born in July 1957, Sison hailed from Tagbilaran, Bohol. His career took off after winning in a singing contest on Student Canteen, a Philippine noontime variety show popular in the late ’70s through the ’80s. He released a number of studio albums which produced songs like “I’ll Face Tomorrow,” “Ibigay Mo sa Akin ang Bukas,” “Isusumbong Kita sa Diyos,” “Awit Ka ng Puso,” “Miss Manikin,” “Kung Alam Ko Lang,” “Maghihintay na Lamang,” “May Iba Ka Na Ba?,” “Kahit na Minsan Pa,” and “Sabik na Puso.”

Joe Cocker: ‘You Are So Beautiful’I was sending some messages to friends one afternoon when I saw the Facebook posting of Eric Clapton that said Joe Cocker passed away at 70. Right away, I found myself humming “You Are So Beautiful,” followed by “With a Little Help from My Friends” and “Up where We Belong.” Clapton and Cocker are two of my favourite artists.

I remember the first time I sang at one of the folk bars near Welcome Rotunda, in Manila, Philippines, called Chick Fil-A. A friend of mine asked me to go with him and jam during his set. I was kind of shy then, and the first thing that came to my mind was a song of Ol’ Joe Cocker, “You Are So Beautiful.” When I started singing, the folks begin to sing along with me, with gusto. Joe Cocker was famous in the Philippines; he still is, especially

to people who love folk rock music.

The applause of the people did something to the mind of a beginner. It inspired new artists like me to join the ranks of veteran folk singers. The place reminded me also of the time when there were big rallies against the abusive regimes that plagued the Philippines in the ’80s to late ’90s. After those rallies, comrades and friends usually hung out at bars to unwind and do a little assessment of what went on.

Another place that I had a chance to play at was Mayric’s Bar, on España Avenue, in front of UST, in Manila. The first time I went to this bar, in the ’80s, some folk singers dished out Joe Cocker’s songs. Mayric’s was also a hangout of many activists in the ’80s and the ’90s. I hear Bob Dylan’s “Masters of War”;

Jackson Brown’s “Lives in the Balance,” “Rebel Jesus,” and “Personal Revenge”; Peter Paul and Mary’s version of “Blowin’ in the Wind”; and Christy Moore’s “Viva la Quince Brigada,” being sung by the Filipino folk singer Noel Cabangon. Paul Simon’s songs were also played there, such as “Still Crazy after All These Years.” I like also the songs of Joan Baez. Chikoy Pura with his band The Jerks performed his song “Reklamo” and covers of The Doors. Burt Chaves rendered Cat Stevens’ songs and Gordon Lightfoot’s “If You Could Read My Mind.” My friend Empiel Palma would belt out “You Are So Beautiful,” while another friend, Danny Fabella, would sing his song “Rosas ng Digma.” The three of us would eventually become a trio named Musikang Bayan. We would go to different island gigs all over the country like Cebu, Davao, and the northern part of the Philippines. I really enjoyed those days. While we were on board the ship, people would usually request “You Are So Beautiful.”

My gig at Mayric’s started in the early ’90s. Folks would request me to sing Ol’ Joe’s “You Are So Beautiful,” which inspired me more whenever there were pretty girls in the audience. There I met Noel Cabangon, who was a buddy of Rom Dongeto, who wrote “Kanlungan.” Noel and Rom eventually formed Buklod. I am proud to say that Rom was one of my songwriting teachers when I attended a workshop in Los

Baňos, Laguna. In that workshop also was Kiko of Grupong Binhi from Bagiuo who remains active to this day, writing protest music.

Another bar that became famous in the ’90s was ’70s Bistro. It also became a hangout of activists. Artists who regularly performed there included Joey Ayala, Bayang Barrios, Gary Granada, Ang Grupong Pendong, Asin, Lolita Carbon, Grace Nono, Banyuhay, and Jess Bartolome. I remember the note posted at the door of the bar: “When you enter, you have to leave your ideology outside and just unwind.” This was a time when there was a great debate going on within the social movement on strategy and tactics. In that bar, you could talk about revolution while somebody wass singing Joe Cocker songs.

In the late ’90s up to the early part of 2000, I played gigs at My Brother’s Mustache Folk Bar, which had branches on Timog Ave. (Quezon City), Jupiter St. (Makati), and Nakpil St. (Manila). I used to play there

with Leonard de Leos, another folk-singer friend of mine. I vividly recall one gig when Robin Padilla with Princess Punzalan was in the crowd, requesting me to play a song that he could sing. Even there, Cocker’s “You Are So Beautiful” was a hit.

Now that I am here in Winnipeg and learning about the passing of Joe Cocker, I couldn’t help but remember those dandy days when, instead of being focused studying law, I was more into reading Marx and those who debated with his ghost and memorizing songs for my thrice-a-week gigs. Political Science, Social Theory, and protest music indeed went hand in hand and made my younger life exciting.

In the midst of the great marches for change, one could hear Ol’ Joe Cocker’s belting out “With a Little Help from My Friends“ and “You Are So Beautiful.” Well Ol’ Joe, keep on rockin’ in heaven with your heavenly renditions. Thanks a lot for the music.

(MFBC) gathered at the Hilton Airport Suites for their inaugural Annual General Meeting. The meeting gave members the opportunity to reflect on major accomplishments from the previous year, and look forward to another bright year ahead.
