Board members in attendance were Barbara McCollum Tom Camp, Stephanie Meyers, John Haas and Dan Pias. Personnel Changes: The time has come to wish our Association Manager, Jared Simmons, a very big CONGRATULATIONS!! Jared has accepted a full-time position back in his home state of California. Jared will be moving his wife Carissa and his two young children to California in the next two weeks. While we are happy for them all and the great opportunity that awaits them, we will sincerely miss them and our loss will definitely be their gain. On behalf of the Board of Directors and the entire Bay Forest Community, I would like to thank Jared for the exceptional job he has done for all of us over the past two and half years. As many of you are aware, Jared was very instrumental in helping us successfully transition into a "self-managed" community. Jared has done a remarkable job the past two years insuring that 100% of our annual dues were collected without one dollar of legal expense required to do so. It appears that we will again achieve that goal this year as well. There are not many community organizations that can make that claim. For those efforts and for all he has done for us, we Thank You, Jared. We wish you and your family all the best in your new adventure. You will be missed here in Texas. As we sadly say goodbye to Jared, we ask that you extend a big hello to Isaac Fouty! The Board of Directors has interviewed and selected Isaac as Jared's replacement. Many of you may already know Isaac as we have watched him grow up as a long-time member of our community. Isaac graduated from Clear Lake High School and currently attends the University of Houston Clear Lake. Isaac was a long-time member of our Blue Marlins Swim Team. April 2015 Board Meeting:A regular meeting of the Bay Forest Community Association (BFCA) Board of Directors was convened on April 20, at the Clear Lake Presbyterian Church. Board members in attendance were Barbara McCollum Tom Camp, Stephanie Meyers, John Haas and Dan Pias.

Personnel Changes:The time has come to wish our Association Manager, Jared Simmons, a very big CONGRATULATIONS!! Jared has accepted a full-time position back in his home state of California.

Dr. Albert B. Bowman RetiresTwo-time Bay Forest resident Dr. Albert B. Bowman, a family practice physician in the Kroger shopping center on El Dorado Boulevard since 1990, recently retired after 49 years of providing health care services to the families of Bay Forest and surrounding communities.

Dr. Bowman and his wife Joyce, parents of four daughters, moved to Sylvan Lake Drive in 1988. They later downsized to a patio home on Hillside Falls Trail.

He always loved that his drive commute to his office took 4 minutes from Sylvan Lake. When they moved to Hillside Falls Trail, Dr. Bowman was able to walk to his office in 4 minutes.

Dr. Bowman received his medical degree from University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. He began his career as a general practitioner in Pasadena in 1966 – “the year Medicare began,” he said. He originally planned to work 50 years, but retired earlier to spend more time with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Through the assistance of Texas Gulf Coast Medical Group, Dr. Bowman was able to attract Dr. John Cottingham, who previously practiced in League City, to take over his practice and continue the same personalized service to which his patients had become accustomed.

On behalf of many of the families of Bay Forest, we want to thank Dr. Bowman for his many years of service to our community and send him and Joyce our best wishes.

Interested in learning to sail? The Clear Lake Sailing Club is proud to sponsor our "Basic Sailing Techniques" class . The class is scheduled for Saturday, May 16th. This class is being taught by one of our own Bay Forest residents! Classes are targeted to beginners interested in the sport of small sailboat (under 20 feet in length) sailing. Class size is limited to the first 20 registrations. This class is for adults and young adults over 14 years old. Part 1 of this class occurs on Saturday afternoon and is a 3 hour session in a classroom environment starting at 11:00 am. If the students then wish to exercise what they have learned in class, they are invited to participate in an on-the-water exercise, scheduled on the day after the class (weather permitting). During the demonstration, students will rig a small sailboat and exercise basic sailing maneuvers. This is where you can really prove to yourself that you understand the basics of sailing! Cost for the class is a $75 donation to our 501-c-3 non-profit charitable organization. Participants must be comfortable in the water and know how to swim. For more information and class registration, contact Don Pearson at 281-488-3819.

Crime Watch Correction: March 2015 Crime Watch Report that appeared in the April 2015 Bay Forest News Marita MoranEditor, The Bay Forest News In the April 2015 edition of the Bay Forest News, the March 2015 Crime Watch Report stated that a sexual assault took place at Falcon Pass Elementary School. Officer Richard Buitron has made a correction to the report and we have made the correction to the Bay Forest April 2015 issue.

You will find his correction below. There is also a comment from the Principal of FPE below that.

From: Richard Buitron, OfficerHouston Police Department Good morning Mrs. Moran, I am resending the corrected crime report for the month of March 2015. In addition, to clarify the location of the sexual assault that was originally showing on the report. The correct location of the sexual assault occurred in the 2020 block of Greenwood Oaks Drive. (Park). The incident occurred during the Christmas break of 2014. The Officer that was dispatched to the location inadvertently put the location of the school, and not the location where the incident took place. The report has been supplemented with the correct address. I am unable to provide any further details regarding the incident due to Department policies. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to e-mail or call. Have a great and safe day. HPD's "Help Us, Help You" campaign is aimed at sharing information and educating citizens on crime prevention and everyday tips related to public safety in our city.

Pictured is Officer Jim Woods of the Auto Theft Division who spoke to the media on BMV prevention.

Neighborhood News

From: Monica Giuffre, PrincipalFalcon Pass Elementary

Officer Buitron, Thank you for sending this correction. The information that went out definitely caused some anxiety and spread quickly amongst our parent clientele. We also certainly want to protect the trust between our families, students and staff to know that our school is a safe place to not only come to school but a place where students can feel comfortable telling an adult anything that is happening to them that is harmful without that information spreading amongst the community. Our staff is trained on how to handle and report information when it involves the safety or well-being of a child. It is our practice to share information with parents when criminal activity occurs on our campus or involves their child. Again, thank you for your prompt response and for serving our community. Help Us, Help You Keep Burglars Away From Your CarSocial Media Coordinator Officer Douglas from Houston Police The Houston Police Department wants to remind you how easy it is to deter burglars from stealing items out of your vehicle.

A car break-in, known as a burglary of a motor vehicle (BMV), is the most preventable crime there is, and one in which citizens can have a direct impact on reducing. The three words to always remember: Take, Hide and Lock. Take your keys, Hide your items and Lock your car doors.

Take a look at a video clip of a staged car break-in that took just five seconds, and a short interview with an HPD auto theft investigator on how motorists tend to leave items in vehicles for criminals to steal. Both are posted on our HPD YouTube channel, Click Here to watch.

It appears many citizens are taking that advice. In the first three months of 2015, BMVs have decreased by 20% in the city compared to the same time period last year.

HPD has conducted numerous BMV prevention campaigns in the past few years in an effort to educate motorists on how quickly thieves can break into a vehicle and how taking easy precautions can deter those thieves.

For quick tips on how you can help decrease car burglaries, check out our brochure on the HPD Website.

Spraying Mosquitosin Bay ForestQuestion: What company is spraying to kill

mosquitoes in Bay Forest?Answer: Cypress Creek Pest Control

PO Box 690548Houston, TX 77269PH: 281-469-2679Fax: 281-469-4720Email: [email protected]

Q: When are they spraying in Bay Forest?A: We do not have them spray year round - it is not necessary.

They spray during mosquito season and when there is elevated mosquito activity.

• During the mosquito season - they spray once a week - usually on Wednesday night (Thursday morning).

• When there is elevated activity - we add a second spraying per week and it is on Saturday night (Sunday morning)

Q: What time of day do they spray?A: Spraying only occurs after dark. We have asked Cypress Creek

to spray in Bay Forest after midnight so as to not spray while people are still taking walks in the community.

Q: What is the range of the spray?A: The light micron spray is directed upward from the spraying

vehicles and has a range of 150 ft. They only spray the 'other side of the street' if there is no entry or exit street on the other side.

Q: Should I stay indoors when the spraying is occurring?A: The spraying is done in the middle of the night (after midnight

and before 5am) to avoid contact with people. While the spray is not harmful to humans in the concentration and manner it is sprayed, it is a good idea not be in the path of the chemical spray.

Q: Should I not water my lawn on the nights spraying is occurring?

A: There is no relationship or effect between watering your yard and the spraying activity. However; just be aware that water is what mosquitoes like and need to live - so if we are having mosquito problems, you may want to cut back on watering as an abatement strategy as well.

Q: Do we spray in the Bay Forest parks?A: The spraying (fogging) is completed by a unit mounted on a

truck. The truck travels the streets of Bay Forest only. Since most parks are surrounded by streets we do not undertake walking (backpack) fogging of the parks. This approach has been effective. The only park that may not be fully fogged would be the Nature Preserve (aka Drill Site) as it is very wooded without roadways around the park.

The Mommies’ Club will provide support for this event in the form of ice cold lemonade and snacks for after the parade for all those who attend.

Also, if you are on our e-mail distribution list, look for details on the annual Pool Party and Ice Cream Social to be held in July.

Again, if you are interested in more information about any event please join our e-mail distribution list by contacting Sandra Espinosa at the following e-mail: [email protected].

By joining the e-mail distribution list, you will be among the first to hear about every opportunity to do fun things that occur during the summer. Sometimes there are impromptu swim gatherings, movie events, or trips to Kemah and/or Galveston with the kids. You are welcome to join us for any event. Hope to see you this summer!

Bay Forest Mommies' Club

Bay Forest Gourmet Club“Some Like It Hot” was the theme of our final party of the year – and the recipes were filled with serranos, jalapenos, chipotles and plenty of cilantro and cheese. We started with two dips and pita chips, beef and gorgonzola meatballs wrapped in prosciutto and brie and papaya quesadillas. The main course included chicken curry, chipotle ribs, and seafood salad, with sides of green beans, tomatoes, black beans, rice, and arugula salad. After the heat, we all enjoyed ice cream with chocolate fudge and cheesecake.

Brie and Papaya Quesadillas Serves 6 snack portions1 Red Onion, thinly sliced1 Papaya, peeled, seeded and sliced1 Jalapeno chili, seeded and minced1/2 bunch Cilantro, stemmed and mincedJuice of 2 Limes, plus limes wedges for garnish4 large flour tortillas10 oz. Brie cheese, rind removed, thinly sliced2 Tbs Butter2 Tbs Olive Oil

Soak the onion in a small bowl of ice water for 20 minutes. Drain well and pat dry. In a medium bowl, combine the onion, papaya, jalapeno, and cilantro. Add the lime juice and gently stir.

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Lay the tortillas on a baking sheet. Place slices of brie on one half of each tortilla. Evenly divide the papaya mixture over the Brie slices. Fold each tortilla in half.

In a small saucepan, melt the butter and combine with the olive oil. Brush the top of each quesadilla with the butter mixture. Bake for 5 to 7 minutes. Turn the quesadillas over and brush the other side with butter mixture. Bake 5 to 7 minutes longer, or until the cheese is melted and the tortillas are lightly browned. Cut each quesadilla into 4 pieces and serve warm, garnished with lime wedges.Source: San Francisco Flavors – Favorite Recipes from the Junior League of San Francisco

Bay Forest Yard of the MonthI’ve heard it said that “April showers bring May flowers.” That may be true, but certainly they have brought lush green yards to Bay Forest at the end of April when we presented these awards. Our congratulations go to Rick and Marcy Ortega of 15414 Park Estates and Vangie and Jones Robertson at 2110 Woodside. Both yards are consistently well maintained and beautifully green, no matter what Mother Nature sends our way.

15414 Park Estates

The Ortegas on Park Estates have done something very unique with their Boxwood. They wanted a true “hedge” so they planted Boxwood in one continuous ribbon that is broken only by the front walkway. It starts on the left of the property, winds down toward the street, around the trees, up toward the house along the walkway, takes a brief break at the front porch and continues across the rest of the house until it reaches the driveway. There are very few flowers in this landscape. The only “pops” of color are the Mexican Heather circling a tree near the driveway, and the American flag waving proudly near the Crape Myrtle, which should be blooming in the next month or so.

(YARD OF THE MONTH continued on page 11)

Page 11: Bay Forest News, May 2015

Bay Forest News ~ May 2015 11

By contrast, the Robertsons on Woodside have a lot more texture and color in their landscape. They have all sorts of trees, shrubs and flowers in their front beds including Crape Myrtle, Lemon Tree, Roses, Caladium, Snap Dragons, Dahlias, Hydrangea, Yucca, and Alyssum. It sounds like it would be chaotic, but it’s not. The large beds are outlined with white stone, and the flowers are planted together in clumps, both of which give the eye a chance to rest on each plant before moving on to the next. A new walk with a stained concrete edge also contributes to this yards crisp and clean feel.

If you know of a house that you feel deserves to be a Bay Forest Yard of the Month, please submit your nomination to [email protected]. We are also looking for a few more residents to join our committee. If you enjoy reading this article every month, perhaps you might consider joining us and making your voice heard? If you are interested please send your name and contact information to the same address…[email protected] No experience or gardening knowledge necessary, just an appreciation of beautiful yards.

Brooks Blue Marlins Swim TeamIt’s Official! Brooks Blue Marlins Swim Season has started! Yes, swim team has officially begun with the start of May. We are still accepting both new and returning swimmers. Many news swimmers, along with seasoned veterans will begin practicing after school at both, the Bay Forest Pool, and also the Brook Forest Pool. As always, ages are divided into different swim times, allowing quality coaching for similar ages.

The Blue Marlins swim team continues to grow... Many new faces have joined our Marlin family by either registering online, or at the walk-up registration held in April at the Bay Forest Pool. We are so excited to begin the year with enthusiastic swimmers and a few new names on our coaching staff. In fact, many of our coaches are previous Blue Marlin team members returning as coaches this year! Hrisa Katsigiannis – Head Coach Mackenzie Clayton Elizabeth Selmarten MaryHelen Fouty Sam Peck Daniel Riojas Brad Sullivan Issac Chang We will continue with our traditional practice times after school: ages 8 and under will practice from 4:30-5:30; while ages 9-10 will practice from 5:30-6:30. Please note that there will be NO practice on the last day of school, June 4th. Beginning on Friday, June 5th, all practices will shift to a morning schedule during June. We will have our time trials, along with a mini-meet against the Nassau Bay Nauticats. This is when all swimmers 10 and under have a chance to participate in a real meet situation, while also clocking swim times for their various swim strokes. These initial race times allow our coaches & staff to place our swimmers in the appropriate race heats for future meets. It’s a fun day for our team. Are we in for giant bark aphid infestation? Thanks to GardenLine listeners Diane Eckols and Jonathan Brege, we now have new pictures of what giant bark aphids look like.

Diane's email said, "Just checking to see if these are beneficial or not, and if not, should I nuke 'em?"

Okay, I made up the "nuke 'em" part.

But they certainly aren't beneficial in any way I've ever seen. So, if you see this kind of infestation on the trunk and limbs of any of your trees, you should definitely waste 'em!

But before we get to the killing spree, here are some things you should know about giant bark aphids: First, they are not to be con-fused with bark lice, which actually are beneficial insects. Bark aphids rain honeydew on everything below. Then, a black, sooty mold develops on the honeydew. Most callers to the GardenLine show seem to be wondering why the tree seems to be dripping "sap" (actually aphid excrement) or what the unusual bug cluster is.

I thought we might have an infestation last summer, but it really never took hold. But getting pictures of bark aphids so early in the year has me a bit concerned — these critters are cyclical and don't appear in big infestations every year. Frankly, I can't remember an infestation in over seven years, so we are due!

There are a couple ways to rid yourself of the problem. First, blast them off with a water hose and treat the tree trunk a day or two later with dormant oil spray. If you want an immediate kill, go with mal-athion, bifenthrin or any synthetic pyrethroid. I suggest a dormant oil spray a week after using an insecticide to insure you kill any eggs or nymphs that may have been protected during the spraying.

And here's something to consider: If the honeydew is dripping harmlessly on nothing below, entomologists say giant bark aphids are a short-lived insect that will go away on its own.

Corporate-Sponsored Merit Scholarship Winners NamedThe National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) released the names of the first group of winners in the 60th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Approximately 1,000 distinguished high school seniors have won corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarship awards financed by about 200 corporations, company foundations, and other business organizations. More than 700 high school seniors nationwide were named as National Merit Achievement Scholars.

The following CCISD students have won corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarship awards:

Robonauts Win World ChampionshipMore than 18,000 students from around the globe traveled to St. Louis, Missouri to put their engineering skills to the test at the annual FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Championship including a high school team representing Clear Creek ISD. When the final competition was done on Saturday, April 25, 2015, CCISD’s Robonauts and their robot “Empire” along with their Alliance partners from Davis, Clovis, and Palmdale, California won the coveted FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC®) Championship and were crowned Alliance World Champs.

This year’s challenge, “Recycle Rush,” was to build a robot that could lift boxes onto each other and top it off with a recycling bin while students tried to have their robot throw pool noodles at the opposing teams’ robots. Competing Alliances scored points by stacking totes on scoring platforms, capping those stacks with recycling containers, and properly disposing of pool noodles, representing litter. The four-day event came down to a heart-pounding conclusion Saturday night in front of a roaring crowd of more than 40,000.

CCISD students and staff along with NASA-Johnson Space Center mentors worked late nights perfecting their winning strategy. The team with students from Clear Brook, Clear Creek, Clear Falls, Clear Horizons Early College High School, Clear Lake and Clear Springs High Schools pulled together with passion, enthusiasm, and vision. After being seeded first and winning the Newton division, the Robonauts headed into Einstein (final round) with teams 1678, the Citrus Circuits, 1671, the Buchanan Bird Brains, and 5012, the Gryffingears as alliance partners.

Clear Creek ISD congratulates the Robonauts on a fantastic season and for

winning the 2015 World

Championship.

Forever Near

She’s gone from here, So far away. I want to get her back.

The pain I feel, so very real, Reveals how great the lack. Then I stop and look around

How could I be so blind. All around are parts of her Which she has left behind.

The smile she gave is lingering, Upon some other face.

She left a scattered legacy, Which time cannot erase.

Impressions that she left behind, Create a work of art,

That I will keep so carefully, Imprinted on my heart.

By Marie Morrow

We wish to express our sincere gratitude to all those who have supported us during this time of deepest loss. Your arms of compassion and prayer uphold us when we feel so weak. We are greatly comforted by this outpouring of

love on every side. Thank you.
