FEATURED HOME IN BAY FOREST

Our family had the fortunate experience of having Edrina Fitting with Ladybug Realty help us find our new home. We had a hard deadline to find the perfect home for us. Despite the impending deadline and shortage of homes in the area, Edrina helped us hurdle the usual and unusual obstacles of to find and close on a home that was exactly what we were looking for.

Buying a home can be a stressful encounter, but with Edina’s knowledge, experience and client courtesy, she turned a stressful situation into a pleasant occurrence. Edrina was always there when we needed her and she was always more than happy to meet with us to view, inspect, or anything else we needed. Edrina helped us meet our deadline and walked us through each step of the process while always being friendly and compassionate.

I sincerely recommend Edrina Fitting and Ladybug Realty to anyone who needs to buy or sell a home. Not only did we find the perfect home for our family, we came out with a great new friend. – Charles R. Kyle Vance, Attorney at Law

years. Other Bay Foresters may host or participate in their first NNO this year.

So, this year on Tuesday night, October 1:• Host or attend a front yard potluck party. • Get out and get to know your Bay Forest neighbors. • Encourage and work with your Block Captain to organize

NNO parties on your street if there isn’t one already planned. • HPD officers will be making the rounds to meet the citizens

of Bay Forest, so let them know we’re doing our part to curb crime in our community and thank them for doing their part!

NNO was created to promote various crime prevention programs including neighborhood watch groups, law enforcement agencies, state and crime prevention associations – businesses, civic groups, and individuals – devoted to safer communities. The introduction of “America’s Night Out Against Crime” on Tuesday, August 7, 1984, began an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and send a message to criminals to let them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. Twenty-nine years ago, 2.5 million Americans took part across 400 communities in 23 states. NNO now involves over 37 million people and 15,000 communities from all fifty states.

Get ready for some fun for the kids and the adults as well as we combine the neighborhood Oktoberfest with Fall Festival-type fun activities for the children.

Please join us for this event, which will be held at the Bay Forest Pool Park near the pavilion on Saturday, October 26th from 3:00 to 5:30 pm. This event is sponsored by the Bay Forest Community Association, the Bay Forest Mommies’ Club and Ladybug Realtors/Edrina Fitting.

All are welcome.

This is a great introduction to our wonderful neighborhood, as there will be adults to visit with and meet - especially if you are new to Bay Forest. And there will be pumpkin decorating for the children as well as good food and fun. Children should wear a costume. Don’t miss it!

There will be hotdogs, bratwurst, giant pretzels (plus a few other goodies…). Bring your lawn chair if you like, and come meet some of your neighbors. Even if you have been a resident for years, there are always new people to meet, and old friends to catch up with!

As always, if you have questions about events, or would like to be included in the email distribution list for upcoming Mommies’ Club activities, please contact Joy King at the following email address: [email protected]. See you there!

COMMUNITY WATCH UPDATEIt has been reported that home and garage break-ins occurred during the early morning hours on September 5th in Bay Forest (one address) and Bay Knoll (two addresses). Homeowners were awakened from their sleep to find individuals attempting to enter their homes or standing over them in their homes.

• Power tools were stolen from the garage of the Bay Forest address.

• One home was entered through an unlocked door. • A Bay Knoll homeowner received (and survived) a gunshot

wound upon confronting the suspect. • Nearby homeowner security cameras caught the shooting,

images of the suspects and a gold-colored pickup truck used by the suspects.

We understand that the stolen power tools were recovered. We have no further details.

Breaking into homes during the nighttime hours and confronting homeowners is a much different trend than that we've experienced in Clear Lake to date in 2013. We all need to be vigilant in how we protect our homes and community. Make sure all your home and garage doors are locked up before retiring and leave on outdoor lights to deter criminal activity.

You will receive any additional information if/when it is made available via email.

REMEMBER - IF YOU SEE SOMETHING SAY SOMETHING!

If you see any suspicious activity in Bay Forest, contact HPD (call 911) or 713-884-3131 (Non-emergency).

Bay Forest Yard of the MonthOnce again, our Bay Forest neighbors have delighted us with their beautiful yards. I love that you all make it so difficult for us to choose each month! This month our winners are Gary and Judy Doggett at 15818 Hillside Falls Tr. and Evelyne Orndoff at 15410 Greenleaf. Congratulations to you both, and thank you for your hard work.

(Yard of the Month continued on page 8)

Our South side winner, 15818 Hillside Falls Trail, sits right next to one of our little pocket parks, so they have a large green space beside their home which really does help to show off all their beautiful flowers and impeccably manicured landscaping. A dry-fit stone border outlines each of the flower beds in the front yard, highlighting the many Boxwood, Begonias, and Knock Out Roses. Ligustrum

plants have been trained and shaped as trees that call attention to Doggett's front gate and all that lies behind it. Normally we don't venture into private spaces, but it is easy to see that the space inside the Doggett's fence is nothing short of spectacular. There are Bougainvilla blooms everywhere, cheerful Impatients and even a small stream and waterfall that run along the fence next to the park.

Page 7: Bay Forest News, October 2013

October 2013 7

Another impressive yard is 15410 Greenleaf on the North side of Bay Forest. Evelyne Orndoff's home is still bursting with color (even at the end of September when these pictures were taken). Some of that color is from the Yellow Esperanza planted around an oversize urn in the center of the yard, and some comes from seasonal Mums. This beautiful "island" also has several different ornamental grasses. The Ligustrum shrubs in front of the house provide a shady backdrop to several different varieties and colors of Caladium, as well as Ms. Ordoff's first attempt at growing Daliahs. Hanging baskets of Begonias bring color to the front door, and Sago Palm and Crape Myrtle are the large plants that anchor the landscape.

Bay Forest Yard of the Month

It is wonderful to live in a neighborhood where people care so much, not only about their yards, but about each other too. Recently the Yard of the Month committee received an email from a resident who was concerned that many of the yards we select to be Yard of the Month feature poisonous plants. Many beautiful plants do have defense mechanisms in place to protect themselves, and these can be harmful to small children or pets. I will never try to suggest what anyone should or should not plant in their yard. I love how each and every house and yard represents the individuals living inside. But, I will caution you to learn about the plants in your yard so you can teach your children which plants are okay to touch, and which ones, like Roses, Oleander, and Sago Palm might be harmful. As always, we appreciate all your comments, especially your nominations for Yard of the Month. If you know of a yard that you feel deserves to be Yard of the Month please send the address to [email protected].

Gardeners by the Bay Meeting October 2, 2013

Dr. William C. WelchHeirloom Gardening in the South

The October meeting of Gardeners by the Bay Garden Club will be held at University Baptist Church, 16106 Middlebrook Drive. There is a social time from 9:00 to 9:30 am serving light refreshments. The meeting starts at 9:30 am.

Our speaker for the October meeting will be Dr. William C. Welch, Professor and Texas AgrilLife Extension Service Landscape Horticulturalist from Texas A&M University. He will be speaking on landscape design using “heirloom” selections.

All are welcome at our meeting. If you have any questions please call Marjorie at: 281-474-5051.

Randy’s Lawn Fertilization ScheduleIf you want to trust turfgrass researchers and fertilizer experts, the proper order is:1. Fungicide 2. Winterizer fertilizer 3. Pre-emergent herbicide.

I believe in that order and feel you should spread them out over two weeks. Put down the fungicide treatment today (if you haven't already), do the winterizer fertilizer next week, and the pre-emergent herbicide in two weeks. But I say the order doesn't really matter because some very busy people have to do all three treatments on the same day or within a couple of days of each other. I also say it doesn't matter because I don't want you to get lazy and not do the treatments at all.

Don't feel bad if you have to do all three treatments on the same day, the same weekend, or in a single week. However, whatever you do, don't put off the fungicide treatment too much longer if your lawn is prone to brown patch.

Also, your application window (between now and November 1) is way smaller than the windows for spring and summer. Instead of eight weeks to get it done, we have only four in the fall. So, don't put it off much longer. It's important to have your pre-emergent herbicide down by the first of November. There are less than two weeks left in September and only four weeks in October.

Gardeners by the Bay

Randy’s Lawn Fertilization ScheduleFor southern grasses including: St. Augustine, Bermuda and Zoysia

• FERTILIZE October-November – apply winterizer formulas for winter hardiness. Ratios vary, but make sure they are “winter” or “fall” formulas designed for southern grasses. (examples: 18-6-12, 8-12-16, 10-5-14) Will make lawns winter-hardy.

• FUNGICIDE September-October – To control the dreaded Brownpatch fungal disease (symmetrical brown circles in the grass) you must prevent it from coming up with a systemic lawn fungicide with Bayleton, Terrachlor, Banner or Benomyl.

• HERBICIDE (Pre-Emergent controls to prevent weeds) Late October-Early November – Use two (2) different pre-emergent herbicides, to prevent the weeds that we experience in February and March. First is a pre-emergent with Portrait or Gallery for broadleaf weeds like clover. Second, use a pre-emergent with Amaze, Betasan, Balan or Treflan for grassy weeds like poa anna or annual bluegrass. There is also Barricade, Dimension or Pendimethlin as a 2-in-1 control.

• INSECTICIDESIt is our belief on GardenLine, as a way to be kind to the environment, that you do not put down insecticides unless you know you have a problem. However, be prepared during the hot summer months — July through September — to attack chinch bug damage. This will show up as irregular shaped spots in the lawn along the concrete. Any liquid insecticide, like Permethrin or Cypermethrin, will treat the spot well. Then apply a granular insecticide like Deltamethrin or granular Permethrin in a broadcast applicator throughout the rest of the yard.

Diamonds are a Girl’s Best FriendClear Lake Panhellenic Association will present their popular annual fashion show on Friday, November 1 with “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend” as its theme. Chair Kay Lee Benoit and her co-chairs JoCat Bruce and Judie Ferguson chose the theme envisioning glamour and fun for everyone involved in planning and attending the fashion show. Think fuchsia pink and lots of sparkle! Creative producer Lenny Matuszewski will once again work his magic and pull fabulous clothes from Dillard’s for member models to strut the runway for the always well-attended philanthropic event at South Shore Harbour Resort. Clear Lake Panhellenic, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year, has over 170 members. The funds raised go to the Crawford-Zbanek Scholarship Foundation, which awards scholarships to local high school senior girls attending Texas universities, funds Girls State delegates from area high schools and awards scholarships to women returning to college to complete their education.

Members are working on gathering program ads and items for the raffle, silent auction and live auction. So, save the date and plan to come join the hot event of the season. Seats are $100 for runway and $75 for general seating. Contact Sue Ellen Jennings for reservations at [email protected] or 281-538-1257. Reservations are required; no walk-ins on the day of the event. You may check out our website for more information: www.clearlakepanhel.org.

School News

As we all anxiously await that first blast of cool air that we know this time of year promises to bring, things continue to brew at Falcon Pass Elementary.

I would like to take a moment and thank all of you who have joined the Falcon Pass PTA. It is because of your generous support that the PTA is able to promote a fun and healthy environment for all the children at FPE. If you have not yet joined the PTA, there is still time! Please contact FPE PTA Membership Chair, Norma Fair at [email protected] and join today!

Be Informed. The FPE PTA will meet on Tuesday, October 8th at noon in

the Teaching Theater adjacent to the Library. FPE Counselor, Ann Johnson, will share how teachers are facilitating character building in their classrooms using the “Voyager Values.” Learn how positive values and attitudes can unlock potential and open doors to success, personal growth and fulfillment. Come early (11:45 am) to enjoy lunch and mingle with other awesome FPE parents. For more information, please contact FPE PTA Programs Chair Brandy Miller at [email protected].

If you would like to stay informed and up to date on the happenings at FPE, email your full name to [email protected] to receive the on-line monthly newsletter “Falcon Passages.”

Be Active. October is National Walk-to-School Month. In an effort to

encourage healthy choices, FPE students are encouraged to walk or ride their bike to school with an adult on October 9th. For more information, please contact FPE PTA PE Liaison Chair Lisa Kopfer [email protected].

Dust off your poodle skirt, grab your loafers (and the kids) and come join the FPE PTA for their annual Sock Hop! This back-to-school celebration is free to all FPE students and their families and will be held on October 17th from 6-8pm in the gym. For more information, please contact FPE PTA Sock HOP Chair, Marie Keener at [email protected].

Did you know children of parents who talk to their kids regularly about drugs are 42% less likely to use drugs than those who don't, yet only a quarter of teens report having these conversations? October 21 – 25 FPE will celebrate Red Ribbon Week, a nationally recognized anti drug and alcohol campaign. For more information, please contact FPE PTA Committee Co-Chair Susan Zimmerman at [email protected].

FPE Spirit Night at McDonald’s (2727 Bay Area Blvd.) is October 29th from 5-8pm. Eat dinner at McDonald’s and they will donate a portion of your purchase to FPE!

Prairie Pandemonium Oct 19thAre you looking for a fun way to make a dif-ference in your local environment? Here it is: Prairie Pandemo-nium! Help Armand Bayou Nature Center restore the tall grass prairie, a critical na-tive habitat. As a part of ongoing restoration

work, ABNC volunteers have grown two thousand pots of lo-cally rare native grass at the nature center for transplantation into the prairie preserve.

We need your help to plant them. You will become a part of a team planting effort. This important event will bring the ABNC prairies closer to a climax state of native wildflowers and grasses. Tall grass prairie once covered at least nine million acres along the coastal plain of south-central Texas and southwestern Louisiana. Today, more than 99% has been lost to agriculture and urbanization. What remains is highly fragmented and severely threatened by development and non-native vegetation. At seven hundred acres, Armand Bayou Nature Center manages one of the most extensive holdings of coastal tallgrass prairie in the lower Galveston Bay watershed.

Sign-in will begin at 8:00 am and the project will last until noon. Lunch and a t-shirt are included, and there will be door prizes too. Volunteers must be 12 years of age or older, and if under 18 to be accompanied by an adult. Participants will need sturdy shoes and clothes that can get muddy. The nature center will provide tools and work gloves.

Registraton Is Required To Participate. To register, contact Merari at [email protected] download and bring this completed release form with you.

New EcoKids Classes for Preschool-Aged Children"EcoKids" Classes are educational and fun for young learners.
