National Night OutTuesday, October 6, 20156:00 pm to 9:00 pm“Give Neighborhood Crime a Going Away Party!”

National Night Out has become Bay Forest Block Party Night!

Pick a shady spot, bring your lawn chairs, a snack and a drink and spend some time with the people you see the most in Bay Forest, your neighbors on your block.

Grab a Snack, Put on a Smile, Lock your Doors, and Go outside to Meet Your Neighbors!

Lights on Means Lights Out for Crime. This is a reminder that putting your porch light on every night makes Bay Forest a safer place for everyone.

For more information or to register your block party, call Officer Richard Buitron at (281) 218-3900. [email protected].

2015 National Night OutConstable Phil Sandlin from Harris County Constable Precinct 8 I would like to encourage the residents of our Precinct to participate in the upcoming National Night Out event scheduled for October 6, 2015. Precinct 8 Deputies and command staff will be out visiting with citizens to discuss crime prevention and how you can help us keep our community safer. If you or your neighborhood is planning a block party, please let us know. We would love to stop by and visit with you. You can post your gathering by emailing us at [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you! For more information, visit www.nationalnightout.org.

Phil Sandlin, Constable Harris County Precinct 8

Police Chief Charles A. McClelland, Jr. said, "There is no better crime prevention strategy or tool than one neighbor looking out for another. It is also an opportunity for law enforcement to get out and meet the public and listen to their issues and concerns." Chief McClelland added, "We certainly want to hear from the public and what their needs and priorities are."

The introduction of National Night Out, “America’s Night Out Against Crime,” in 1984 began an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie, and to send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Letter from the EditorA Bay Forest cat was brutally murdered. We need your help to solve this problem. The day was Thursday, September 24, 2015. Sam, the cat, left his home on Bay Forest Drive, on the south side of Bay Forest at 4:00 am. The front half of his body was found in the front yard of a house on Manor Square Drive, a few houses from the Pool Park, at 12:30 pm by the yard service people who had come to cut the grass. (The son in the Manor Square house had taken their dog for a walk around 10:00 am and the half cat was not in the yard at that time.)

As it happened, both the owner of the cat and the finder of the ½ cat posted what had happened on Nextdoor, a social media website for the Clear Lake area. That is how I learned what had happened. That is how the owner found the finder.

The owner of the house where the front half of Sam was found, took pictures and contacted the Constable. The Constable said that he could tell the cat had been cut with a sharp knife or saw.

Here is how you can help:I think the least we can do is ask the residents of Lake Lodge, Manor Square, Woodside, Maple River and Elk Park to check their surveillance video for the relevant date and times (9/24/15 from 4:00 am – 12:30 pm) to see if there is anything that might be helpful in locating the person/persons who cut this cat in half, if that was the case.

I think we also need to ask all Bay Forest residents if they or any member of their family might have heard someone talking about doing this. People who do things like this sometimes have a hard time keeping it to themselves.

If you have any information, you can email me at [email protected] and I will pass it to the owner of Sam, the cat.

Also, I looked on the Internet for information about something like this happening and this is what I found:

May 2015http://www.click2houston.com/news/family-finds-their-cat-sliced-in-half-in-neighbors-yard/32876462

This one is way too close to home:August 2015http://www.click2houston.com/news/several-cats-found-mutilated-in-webster-neighborhood/34561414

So please, please do what you can to gather information and email it to me with the heading, LOST CAT.

The people of Bay Forest are good people. I know you will come through.

Many thanks!Marita Moran

Help Us, Help You Join HPD's Citizen Patrol!Social Media Coordinator Officer Douglas from Houston Police

The Houston Police Department wants to remind citizens, you too can help reduce crime in your community by joining the HPD Citizen Patrol program.

HPD fights crime in neighborhoods and communities throughout Houston, but can't do it alone. Through the Volunteer Initiatives Program (VIP), HPD uses volunteers to enhance the delivery of police services to Houston-area neighborhoods. The Citizen Patrol program was established to bring the citizens of Houston and HPD together for a common goal; to improve the quality of life by eliminating crime. It is designed to provide a way for Houstonians to organize into patrol groups and be additional eyes and ears the police can count on to make Houston a safe place to live and work.

Citizen Patrol groups must meet the the following qualifications: • Be at least 18 years of age • Designate a lead coordinator • At least 8 persons participate in the program (Less than 8 requires approval from the Citizen Patrol Division Liaison) • Commitment to patrol minimum of 30 hours per month • Submit a monthly report detailing group's activity • Submit a marked map outlining the area to be patrolled

HPD Community Services Officer J. Abad discusses the benefits of participating in the HPD VIP program and how Citizen Patrol can help your neighborhood on the HPD YouTube channel at http://youtu.be/V-BwGuNuqXY

To become an HPD volunteer, visit www.houstontx.gov/police/vip/home... or call the HPD Public Affairs Office at 713-308-3200.

A Citizen Patrol application is available for download at www.houstontx.gov/police/vip/images/vip_app.pdfor can be picked up at the HPD Edward A. Thomas Building, 1200 Travis, 21st floor or any one of the patrol stations.

HPD's "Help Us, Help You" campaign is aimed at sharing information and educating citizens on crime prevention and everyday tips related to public safety in our city.

Crime Watch: Stay up-to-date with your neighbors on the community website www.bayforest.info.

Bay Forest Yard of the MonthOnce again, the Yard of the Month committee has been busy searching Bay Forest for yards that are consistently kept up well, and honestly, just plain pretty to look at. We have two more beautiful examples of lovely, well maintained yards for you to enjoy this month. Our congratulations go to Peter and Elizabeth Lauzon at 15219 Poplar Springs, and to Ted and Roxann Huddle at 15707 Woodbourne.

The Lauzons’ cheerful and sunny landscape on Poplar Springs is very nicely defined by a deep flower bed next to the house that is filled with Palms and Caladiums, and with red Impatiens and Lilies for pops of color. Ligustrum bushes provide depth and texture, while Sago Palms and US flags provide height and movement. There are also two young hardwood trees in the Lauzon's front yard. I commend them for planting and nurturing these trees. In a few years they will provide beautiful shade to a very sunny part of the street.

Page 8: Bay Forest News, October 2015

Bay Forest News ~ October 2015 8

Bay Forest Yard of the MonthThe Huddles on Woodbourne have a mostly shady yard. Their trees, and those of their neighbors, are full grown. However, enough light penetrates to allow the grass to grow green and lush, and for Begonias and ornamental grasses to thrive in their oversize planters. The mostly symmetrical landscape echoes the architecture of the house, but a few surprises, like the graceful Golden Dewdrops "Sweet Memories" bush (with purple flowers and yellow berries) and the tall Shrubby Yew Pines at the front door keep it fresh and interesting.

The Yard of the Month Committee does need a few additional committee members, so if any of you readers have been looking for a low pressure way to get involved and give back to your community, please consider joining us. No gardening experience or knowledge is required, just an appreciation for beautiful plants, and usually less than one hour a month to review the yards. Please contact us [email protected] if you have the time because we need the help! Also, if you know of a yard that you feel deserves recognition, send the address in an email to [email protected] and we will be sure to take a look.

Bay Forest Gourmet ClubDue to a last minute change, the first party was held on October 3, 2015. In keeping with our Dance to the Music theme, this party celebrated the Polka. Contrary to popular belief, the Polka did not originate in Poland, but rather was first danced in Bohemia, a region located in what is now the Czech Republic. According to legend the Polka was invented by a peasant girl in Bohemia and was introduced to the Prague dance halls in 1835. While listening to Polka music, the Bay Forest gourmet members feasted on several sausage and pork recipes as well as traditional salads and potato dishes. If you would like to join us for the next party on December 5, 2015, contact Anita Burns at [email protected]. Meanwhile here is a recipe for traditional pierogis.

Pieroski (Pierogis) Makes 24-30 pierozki

Savory Cheese Filling:8 oz. (1 cup) cottage cheese2 Tbsp. bread crumbs1 egg yolk½ tsp salt¼ tsp pepperPinch of garlic powder

Put all ingredients in a medium bowl and mix well. Fill and cook pierozki as directed.

Dough:4 cups all-purpose flour2 eggs½ tsp salt1 cup water or skim milkExtra flour for mixing½ cup softened butter

1. In a medium bowl, mix together flour, egg and ½ tsp. salt. Mix in water or milk a little at a time until the dough is stiff.

2. Knead dough for 2-4 minutes (about 100 times) on a floured surface (you will probably have to add more flour during kneading). Roll out dough to ⅛-inch thickness on floured parchment paper with a rolling pin.

3. With a drinking glass or round cookie cutter, cut out rounds of dough 3 inches in diameter.

4. Put 1 tbsp. of cheese filling on one-half of circle.5. Moisten edges of dough with a little water. Fold dough over

filling and press filling and press edges together first with your fingers and then with the tines of a fork. Repeat with remaining dough and filling.

6. Fill a large pot with water and 1 tsp. salt and bring to a boil. Place pierozki in boiling water a few at a time (if you put too many in the water at one time they will stick together). Boil for 3-4 minutes, or until pierozki begin to float.

7. Serve warm with sour cream or salsa.

These can be made ahead and frozen before cooking. Place uncooked pierozki on parchment covered cookie sheet and freeze until firm; place in a zip lock bag until ready to cook.

NovemberGardeners by the Bay meeting, Wednesday, November 4, 2015 welcomes gardeners of all levels to hear Skip Ricter, the popular Harris County Extension Agent who will speak on "Gardening Activities for Autumn.” Come learn what you can do to start your fall garden. Hear his tips on mini greenhouses.

Gardeners by the Bay

Early to bed, early to rise, work like hell and... wait for it...

WINTERIZE!Although fall officially began Sept. 23, at 3:21 am, it would seem that Mother Nature has not caught up to that idea just yet. The Autumnal Equinox may catch us with high temperatures still in the 90s.

Nevertheless, if you want to get busy with autumn projects like

landscape work and lawn care, there's no time like the present for the fall feeding or lawn "winterization."

Last weekend on the radio show, I told a story about a nursery owner who, around 15 years ago, used to berate me for using the term "winterizer," because for our St. Augustine-dominant lawns, he held that "it simply was a fall feeding." My response was, "Then why do you sell products that say 'winterizer' on the label?"

He is no longer in business.

While he was technically right ... "winterizer" was originally meant for northern turfgrasses ... I still have no problem with the fall feeding for St. Augustine or Zoysia or Bermuda being defined as "the winterizer."

The application is supposed to slow down the growth of a lawn before any freezing weather comes along. And, more importantly, to "beef up" levels of potassium (the "K" in NPK formulas). If you look at all the fall fertilizers out there, you'll see why I've been a longtime proponent of one in particular: Nitro-Phos Fall Special 8-12-16. If you compare it to spring and summer fertilizers such as 19-5-9s or 19-4-10s, you'll see the last number —

the Potassium (K) — is higher at 16. That heavier-than-normal dosage of potassium is aimed at toughening up plant tissue for potential freezing weather ahead, like you would use antifreeze in a car's radiator.

The reason I'm stressing the numbers is because, for the Gulf Coast, you can't just go by the words "winterizer" or "fall fertilizer" on any old bag of fertilizer out there. First, make sure it's especially designed for southern turfgrasses — St. Augustine, Zoysia and Bermuda. Many winterizers from national companies are, in my opinion, anything but true winterizers. I've seen some with ratios like 30-0-5. Yikes!!! That is way too much nitrogen (the N in NPK) and very little potassium.

In our humidity, too much nitrogen, coupled with excess rain or over-watering, will be an open invitation to brownpatch. It's really like adding fuel to the fire. In fact, I may focus specifically on Brownpatch in article in a week or two.

For the Houston area, absolutely avoid any winterizer where the first number is over 20.

To tie up this article with a pretty bow, here is my original lawn fertilization schedule and a list of the fall fertilizers I have recommended for years with their ratios:

• Nitro-Phos Fall Special 8-12-16• EASY GRO Winterizer & New Lawn Starter 18-6-12• Ferti-lome Winterizer 10-5-14 and 10-0-14

And, finally, here's a thought on using "organic" fertilizers in the fall: Always think of them for FEEDINGS only. They're not "winterizers." Organic fertilizers, for the most part, are great for adding organic matter to the soil and providing a small feeding for the grass ... a great way to prepare the turf and soil for the winter months. But they are not formulated with those higher-than-normal potassium levels for freeze protection.

Clear Lake Aggie Moms’ ClubOn September 14, 2015, J. Michael Ragan, TAMU Chief of Police, and Lieutenant Alan Baron from the University Police Department spoke to the CLAM membership. Their interesting talk was sprinkled with stories and tips about keeping your student safe on and off campus. Some of the safety information was new to CLAM members. For example, we learned about ‘bait bikes,’ which house tiny transmitters, and have led to the arrest of over 100 bike thieves (most of whom were not students!), leading to a decrease in bicycle vandalism. We also learned that the campus police are actual police officers, and that the University Police are actually an accredited agency, which is quite an honor, as only 5% of all police forces have met the requirements for accreditation. Information about the purpose of Code Maroon texts, Clery Report compliance, improved campus lighting upgrades, Thursday – Saturday night free carpools (for students who may have need of a ride to get out of an unsafe situation), the Corps of Cadets Escort Service for helping students navigate safely around campus at night, and the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT), were all discussed. It was a wonderfully informative meeting. Upcoming events include a speaker from the TAMU Academic Success Center on October 12, 2015 covering the topic “Make it a Successful Year in Aggieland.” All meetings are held at University Baptist Church. Doors open at 6:30 pm for mingling and snacks, with the meeting starting at 7:00 pm.

Wings Over Houston Airshow October 17 and 18, 2015 Ellington Airport, 510 Ellington Field, Houston 77034 www.wingsoverhouston.com

The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and the Breitling Jet Team headline this year’s Commemorative Air Force (CAF) 31st Annual Wings Over Houston Airshow, which will be held Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 17-18, at Ellington Airport. The Thunderbirds, performing as a team of six F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft, return to Houston following their last Wings Over Houston performance in 2010. The Breitling Jet Team from Europe, the world’s largest professional civilian flight team that performs in seven L-39C Albatros jet aircraft, will end their first U.S. tour with this first-time performance at Wings Over Houston.

Military Aircraft Demonstrations:U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds- Headlining Team The Thunderbirds are back! The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds have finalized their 2015 show schedule. In its 62nd season, the team is slated to perform 71 demonstrations at 39 locations. The Thunderbirds have the honor of representing nearly 700,000 active duty, Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard, and civilian Airmen across America and deployed around the world.

VFA-122 Super Hornet Demonstration Team Air shows are the best place to see a VFA-122 Super Hornet in action. The Tactical Demonstration, or "Tac Demo" team flies the single-seat F/A-18E and two-seat F/A-18F as close to the "edge of the envelope" as safety and prudence allow. The routine highlights the Rhino's maneuverability and slow-speed handling characteristics and has been very well received around the country.

Breitling Jet Team-2015 USA TourPrecision. Speed. Audacity. Aerobatics is one of the world’s most demanding disciplines – and one of the most fascinating sights. A concentrated blend of technique, mastery and style. In order to share its passion for aerobatics with a broad audience, Breitling has created the Breitling Jet Team, the world’s largest professional civilian flight team performing on jets.

Texas Flying Legends MuseumBased at Ellington Airport in Houston, the Texas Flying Legends Museum flies their growing collection from Texas to Minot, N.D. each spring, to Wiscasset, Ma. each summer, and back to Texas in the fall. Their mission is to acquire the best flying World War II aircraft available and campaign these Flying Legends with a sense of inspiration for those who are not aware or involved in the great history of the United States, and most importantly, honor the many that are.

Tora! Tora! Tora! Commemorative Air Force "Yesterday, December 7, 1941—a date which will live in infamy—the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan." F.D.R. Warbird fans will appreciate the World War II TORA! TORA!

TORA! demo which recreates the reenactment of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Houston is fortunate to have this act as their home event.

WW II Airpower Demo Recreates many famous battles from World War II with prop-driven aircraft from the round-engine era. Favorite acts include the reenactment of the attack on Pearl Harbor, as well as many other famous battles including flying examples of World War II trainers, liaison aircraft, fighters, and bombers, troop/cargo carrier aircraft. The sky will be filled with warbirds! This act is a unit of the Commemorative Air Force and has been doing this reenactment for over 30 years.

Several other area museums participate as well including: Lonestar Flight Museum , Texas Legends Flying Museum, Vietnam War Flight Museum, Lewis Collection, Cavanaugh Flight Museum, Collings Foundation

U.S. Coast Guard Helicopter Dolphin MH65D The U.S. Coast Guard will demonstrate the effectiveness of its short range recovery helicopter, the Aerospatiale Dauphine ("Dolphin") HH-65D. The Dolphin will "rescue" a person from the ground. The HH-65D is based at U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Houston at Ellington Airport.

Civillian Performers:

Debby Rihn-Harvey is one of the highest ranked aerobatics competitors in the United States. Learn to fly at her flight school in LaPorte Texas.

David Martin flies a unique airshow that demonstrates the extraordinary maneuverability of his Breitling CAP 232. He is well known in the aerobatic community for his ability to tumble the plane in unparalleled style and accomplishing maneuvers never duplicated by others.

Kevin Coleman is only 23 years old and he has already made a name for himself in the air show business. Kevin, who is one of the youngest air show stars in the world, is a second generation pilot and second generation air show performer.

Kelli GlennFPE PTA President

While we eagerly await the first REAL cool front of the year, there’s a lot happening at Falcon Pass!

Our October PTA meeting will be held at 12:15 pm on Tuesday, October 21st in the teaching theater. Lunch will be provided by PTA at Noon. After a brief business meeting, Lauren Tragni, FPE’s new counselor, will present a program on talking to your kids about drugs.

October 7th is National Bike or Walk to School Day. In an effort to encourage physical fitness, FPE students are encouraged to walk or ride their bike to school with an adult on October 7th. For more information, please contact FPE PTA PE Liaison Chair Rhonda Klak [email protected].

Dust off your poodle skirt, grab your loafers and the kids, and join the FPE PTA for their annual Sock Hop! This back-to-school social is free to all FPE students and their

families. The Sock Hop will be held on Thursday, October 15th from 6-8pm in the gym. For more information,

please contact FPE PTA Sock HOP Chair Courtney Monk at [email protected].

Did you know…children of parents who talk to their kids regularly about drugs are 42% less likely to use drugs than those who don't, yet only a quarter of teens report having these conversations? October 26th-30th FPE will celebrate Red Ribbon Week, a nationally recognized antidrug and alcohol campaign. This year’s theme is Respect Yourself. Be Drug Free! For more information, please contact FPE PTA Red Ribbon Week Chair Isabel Swanson at [email protected].

Is your son or daughter an aspiring artist, writer, dancer, film maker, photographer or musical composer? Reflections, a national art competition sponsored by PTA, has encouraged millions of students to express themselves by giving positive recognition for their artistic efforts. Students in preschool through grade 12 may create and submit works of art in six categories. The theme this year is “Let Your Imagination Fly.” The FPE campus deadline is Oct. 23. Rules are posted by the FPE Art Room.

Thanks to all who are backing the future with your membership in the Falcon Pass PTA. If you aren’t already a member, go to www.joinpta.org today!

Keep up to date with Falcon Pass PTA on Facebook. Search for Falcon Pass Elementary Official PTA FB Group.

Clear Lake Girls Cross CountryFreshman Team Run Like Champions for 1st PlaceJV Places 2nd and Varsity Places 3rdLast week, Clear Lake hosted the Clear Lake Invitational Cross Country Meet at Taylor Lake Village Park. Although the weather varied throughout the course of the races, the Lake runners keep their footing and their focus to finish strong!

The Lake freshman girls ran like champions and finished in First Place! Ilana Yoon took 1st place with Esther Yoon in 2nd, and Julia Wu took 3rd. Also representing the winning freshman team were Grace Song, Christine Whaley, Gabriella Howerton, Arshia Batra, Audra Carlson, Alli Green, Kate Skeeter, Lainey Mazur and Natalia Soriano.

Varsity competed very well and finished in 3rd place in their division. Hannah Penley led the team again this week placing 10th in a field of 111 runners. Also posting great times to pull the Lake team into 3rd place were Kaitlyn Koester, Michelle Musgrave, Taryn Otto, Jade Graham, Victoria Basich, Allison Halloran, Melissa Jensen, Kate Halloran and Isabel Colon.

Nicole Swingle, Samantha Roberts, and Morgan Molenda all brought home medals from the JV division even as the sky opened up with pouring rain and turned the course into a mud fest at the start of their race. Korrie Fulcher, Cassie Abrego, Caroline Delauro, and Elizabeth Frakes contributed to the team's overall 2nd place team finish.

Be sure to stay up-to-date!For great action shots of your Lake
