Farewell to our Bradford Pears?

Our BFCA Board has decided to cut down all of the Bradford Pear trees that line Manor Square, Lake Lodge and Lofty Peak Lane bordering the Pool Park. It was my recommendation that they be trimmed and shaped to solve the safety problem. But they opted to have them all removed.

I wonder how much it will cost to cut down trees that size, grind the stumps out and put down sod?

We will miss the beautiful white blossoms in the spring, the shade they provide during the hot summer when we are walking to the pool or just walking the dog. And we will miss the fall color they provide, which is so rare here in Houston.

March and cleared numerous trees and shrubs from the pipeline right-of-way that passes under our neighborhood. If you weren’t familiar before with the buried pipeline’s path from Space Center under our Pocket Parks and continuing to El Dorado before, you can clearly see it now. The tree trimmers trimmed and/or removed trees that were initially planted by the neighborhood developer or that have been planted since. Such clearing is part of the easement provisions and serves to assure that the pipeline route is clearly visible and accessible.

This year we’re embarking on a new phase of tree replacement. Replacing trees in our urban forest must be viewed as a continuous process. The “forest” in Bay Forest has suffered some major losses due to trees reaching the end of their natural lives, damage from Hurricane Ike, drought conditions, disease, insect infestation, and other factors…such as pipeline route clearing. So we will be adding new plantings in the Bay Forest Parks and Pocket Parks to renew our forest.

Where will trees be planted? What species? What sizes? These are good questions that require forestry expertise. We have partnered up with Trees For Houston (TFH) to develop and execute a Forestry Plan for our community. What to plant, where to plant and what sizes to plant requires some outside expertise. TFH is a nonprofit organization dedicated to planting, protecting and promoting trees. TFH’s mission is to plant, promote and protect trees all over the greater Houston area. We’ve learned that greater diversification in our tree population, lessens the chances that a single event could decimate the landscape in the future. In addition, for reforestation projects, larger numbers of smaller trees are more ideal than a few larger ones. Sadly, we have been advised that the Bradford Pear trees located along the perimeter of the pool park have reached the end of their natural life cycle and will continue to pose a safety issue with falling and breaking branches. We will be working closely with TFH to remove them and design appropriate replacements designed for those areas over the next several weeks. Those trees have served us well for many years and they will be missed.

Our urban forest is all of the woody vegetation growing within the boundaries of our community, including trees, shrubs, and vines found along our streets, on our private property, in our parks and in our common areas. Like all homeowners in Bay Forest who manage the “forest” on their property, BFCA is responsible for managing the urban forest on our common property. Watch for the results of our efforts.

POOL OPERATIONS FOR 2014:Once again in an attempt to better manage the usage of our community pool assets, we have adjusted the pool hours to reflect the actual usage. The new pool hours will be from 12pm to 8pm Tuesday thru Friday, 9:00 am to 9:00 pm Saturday and Sunday and closed on Mondays for maintenance. See related pool article for additional information.

Bay Forest Yard of the Month

Spring has sprung in Bay Forest! Finally, we are past our last potential frost date and winter is gone! Flowers are popping up all over Bay Forest, and most homeowners are busy working in their yards. It won't be long until the grass is green, and before we know it Crape Myrtles will be blooming again. To celebrate the return of Spring, the Yard of the Month committee has chosen two yards that just seem to sing with Spring. This month, our homeowners have a lot in common. Both women love gardening, and do all their own yard work. Both yards are corner lots which means double the amount of visible flower beds (double the work!), and both houses have been eagerly anticipated by the yard of the month committee for several months. Except for the fact that both yards have Crape Myrtle, the two landscapes are very different.

On the north side, Sue and Brian Kam at 2202 Cherrytree Ridge have actually gotten Daffodils to thrive in their sunny front yard. They also have Roses, Azaleas, Pansies, and Impatiens along with a wide variety of green bushes and ornamental grasses. This yard has beautiful color all year long, so what is green now will be blooming later. The row of red brick along the beds does a great job of drawing attention to the flowers planted there, not only because it creates a great boundary against the grass, but because it raises the bed ever so slightly. And speaking of raised, it doesn't really show in the pictures, but the Kams house is actually several feet above street level. Erosion in their side yard was a problem

(YARD OF THE MONTH continued on page 7)

that they have solved elegantly with the installation of a simple retaining wall. This small wall keeps their soil from washing away, protects the roots of the large tree at the back of their property, and provides a spot for a small shade garden including Aloe Vera and Grape Hyacinth.

Page 7: Bay Forest News, April 2014

April 2014 7

Bay Forest Yard of the Month

On the south side, Wanda and Wolfgang Abele at 15602 River Maple have an explosion of Azaleas on their hands. These bushes were full of buds when we took the pictures, so this yard will be even prettier by the time this newsletter comes out. The Abeles have filled their shady front yard with several shades of Azalea from purest white to deepest pink. This gives a lot of depth and texture to the landscape and compliments their house beautifully. The large evergreen and Sago Palm anchor the house and really let the Azaleas shine. Wanda has also planted lots of Geraniums and Impatiens, so between that and the Crape Myrtles, the color will continue well into summer. When you drive by, don't forget to look down the driveway of this house; the backyard is filled with several varieties of beautiful Citrus trees and many graceful potted Plumeria trees.

Leash lawDogs and cats may not “run at large” in Houston. “Running at large” means going on public or private property without the owner or another person having direct physical control of the animal. An animal on a leash is considered to be under direct physical control of a person.

When animals are not on a leash they must be otherwise restrained, either behind a fence or in some other enclosure that will prevent their escape.

“Running at large” may result in impoundment of the animal or in the issuance of one or more citations.

Let's Kill Some Weeds!Isn't it interesting that this "Winter That Won't Quit" has done seemingly nothing to our weeds!

Darn you, 2014 Polar Vortex!

No matter how many cold nights we suffer, the weeds just keep on coming!

If I wrote a tutorial about how to deal with every weed, it would take months to complete and eventually turn into a book. So, I'll just focus on killing every one of your broadleaf weeds with some very specific products that I think will solve the problem. From dollarweed, oxalis, henbit and clover to chickweed, thistle, dandelion, spurge and stickyweed, I can help you kill them quickly.

It involves two products ... Bonide Weed Beater Complete and Bonide Weed Beater Ultra.

You may already be familiar with Weed Beater Ultra, the liquid "cool-season" herbicide. It's still cool enough — with highs in the 60s and low 70s — to use it with confidence. But the minute the highs reach 80, you need to cease its use. This is a liquid post-emergent herbicide that will take out each and every broadleaf weed AND help with the dreaded Virginia buttonweed. And, in most seasons, this might be all you'd need.

However, with this year's serious weed infiltration, I suggest you first apply Bonide Weed Beater Complete. This is a one-of-a-kind granular product with prodiamine. It works as a pre-emergent herbicide for both broadleaf and grassy weeds. You may also know prodiamine as Barricade. The twist is that it also works like a post-emergent with an active ingredient known as sulfentrazone. But it won't kill trees and shrubs or poison groundwater the way atrazine-based weed-and-feeds have been known to.

So, here's my technique: Put out the Weed Beater Complete first. Then, either lightly water it in with irrigation or allow Mother Nature to do it if rain is imminent. In either case, wait a day. Then apply the liquid Weed Beater Ultra to dry grass. I've been asked if

Annual Plant SaleWednesday, April 2, 2014

9:30 am to 12:00 noon The plant sale will include favorite plants transplanted from members’ gardens as well as new spring seedlings. Hard to find and unique annuals, perennials, herbs, shrubs and books will be for sale. Master gardeners will be available to answer your questions.

Located at University Baptist Church SW corner, 16106 Middlebrook Drive, Houston, TX, 77059

For questions call Marjorie at 281-474-5051.

it would be okay to use the Ultra application as the "watering in" part. I don't recommend that. While the granular product needs water to be activated, using both weed killers at once would over-chemicalize the soil.

I've used this technique for a few years now, especially in Galveston where dollarweed has a seemingly permanent residency, and it works like a charm every time.

There are variations to the applications, but you need to think them through logically:

You may have heard that the granular Weed Beater Complete works best if you water the grass first. That's true, if you really want to focus on the post-emergent aspect. But the pre-emergent doesn't really need to stick to the grass blades. That's why I recommend watering it in after application and spot treating with the liquid treatment thereafter.

Is a surfactant necessary with the granular? No. Surfactants are only used when applying liquid products. Here's some background on why.

Can you apply the liquid Weed Beater Ultra first? Yes, if you allow it to dry well before putting down the granular product.

Can you allow Mother Nature to water in the granular if you only spot treated with the liquid? Yes, but don't apply the liquid unless it will have 6-8 hours to dry before it rains.

Can I only use the granular? Yes, but for a 95 percent kill, it really helps to spot treat secondarily.

If you have additional questions about this procedure, you can ask them this weekend by calling the GardenLine radio show.

CCISD NEWS

As an alum of Clear Lake High School, we would like to invite you to our annual fashion show...Clear Creek Education Foundation presents “I Love CCISD” Fashion Show-Annual fashion show takes on new format with acclaimed fashion event producer.

The 8th annual Clear Creek Education Foundation (CCEF) Fashion Show, “I Love CCISD,” will be held Sunday, April 27 at 4:30 pm at Alex Rodriquez Mercedes Benz in League City, Texas. Proceeds of the Fashion Show will benefit programs in the Clear Creek Independent School District (CCISD) funded by the Clear Creek Education Foundation.

This year’s show will feature a new format, complete with runway seating, hors d’oeuvre stations and featuring talent vignettes straight from the halls of CCISD schools. The ”I Love CCISD” Fashion Show will be produced by Lenny Matuszewski, Jr., the nationally known fashion event producer, and will feature fashions from Dillard’s – Baybrook Mall. CCISD high school juniors who are in good academic standing, involved in school and community activities, and demonstrate all that is positive about CCISD will be selected to serve as student models.

In anticipation of the event, all kindergarteners in CCISD will participate in an “I Love CCISD” t-shirt art contest. The winner’s art will be featured on t-shirts, which will be sold throughout the district and in participating locations in support of the annual Fashion Show.

“The evening will showcase many areas that we “love” about CCISD, including an array of student entertainment, demonstrations from career and technology programs, such as robotics, and much more,” said CCEF Executive Director Kaci Hanson. “We are excited about the new format and hope you’ll mark your calendar for this fun and worthwhile event.”

The success of the Foundation is due not only to the volunteer effort of many, but also to the countless businesses and individuals in the community who make a difference by financially supporting fundraising activities. Please join us in Supporting Educational Excellence through this unique event.

For additional information regarding the CCEF Fashion Show, please contact co-chairs Jill Reason (281) 734-2838 or Dinah Matthews (281) 796-5090. All the detailed information regarding the show including an opportunity to purchase tickets can be found at www.clearcreekeducationfoundation.org

CCISD Names Stadium in Honor of NASA Shuttle Legacy...The Clear Creek Independent School District is home to a community unified by the spirit of exploration, so when it was time to determine the name of the District's second stadium, the Board of Trustees voted for Challenger Columbia Stadium in honor of the space shuttle program legacy and the astronauts who perished aboard both flights. "NASA is honored that our community recognizes the tremendous commitment that accompanies human spaceflight. We are proud that the stadium name will serve as a lasting memorial of our teamwork and dedication", said JSC Center Director, Dr. Ellen Ochoa.

The name was one of three recommendations brought forward to the Board of Trustees by a CCISD Naming Committee. “The history and the future of NASA

are important to all of us, especially our students,” said Dr. Greg Smith, Superintendent of Schools. “Whether it is graduation, a robotics competition, a fine arts or athletic achievement, our students will be reminded to always be bold in their aspirations and reach for the stars.” When making the recommendation, the CCISD Naming Committee said Challenger Columbia Stadium was strongly reflected in community suggestions. The name also honors two major historical events that impacted CCISD and the community. It also signifies the deep history of the space program within CCISD boundaries.

The District broke ground on Challenger Columbia Stadium on Wednesday, March 26. It is located near 2145 West NASA Boulevard, near Challenger Seven Park. Clear Creek ISD’s Challenger Columbia Stadium is scheduled to open in August 2015. It is funded through the 2013 CCISD Bond.
