Bay Forest Park Exercise Trail

Watch for changes in the Bay Forest (pool/tennis courts) park during the summer of 2012. BFCA recently purchased new exercise equipment that will be installed along a new section of the already installed walking/jogging path. This new equipment will facilitate cross-training opportunities for our residents. You may want to help with its installation, so watch your email inbox for notices of upcoming workdays. For a larger view of this map click the map above.

Bay Forest “Adopts” Space Center EsplanadesBay Forest residents may be aware that the City of Houston owns all esplanades in the city streets around our neighborhood. These include the grassy “islands” between the traffic lanes in Space Center and El Dorado. Not many of us realize that the city also owns the landscaped islands within our community (along Bay Forest Drive, for example).

Neighborhood News(BFCA continued from page 3)

Irrespective of the ownership, it makes sense that we – Bay Forest Community Association – maintain the esplanades inside our neighborhood. We mow, irrigate, plant and tend the grass, and shrubs, and trees within these esplanades.

What may not be common knowledge is that BFCA is responsible for maintaining some, but not all, of the esplanades within Space Center and El Dorado where those streets parallel our neighborhood. Those include the section of El Dorado from Space Center to the bridge over Horse Pen Bayou and the section of Space Center from El Dorado to the City of Houston Fire Station. We mow, irrigate, plant and tend the grass, and shrubs, and trees within these esplanades. That’s the way Bay Forest came into being.

But the strip of Space Center between El Dorado and the drainage ditch located halfway to Bay Area Boulevard has been maintained by the City of Houston since Bay Forest opened. The City mows the grass within these esplanades. Any irrigation that occurs is through rainfall. Any tending of the shrubs and trees is through volunteer citizen effort. You may have noticed and wondered why that strip isn’t as well maintained as the two discussed above. Now you know why.

Our attempts to get the City to better maintain the esplanades in Space Center along the Kroger side of Bay Forest have proved unsuccessful over the years. At a recent BFCA board meeting, it was moved and passed that BFCA would add maintenance of this stretch of Space Center Blvd. to our community landscape maintenance program. You should see more regular mowing and edging of that grass.

In addition, we’ve taken on the “clean up” of this section of Space Center. We scheduled a Bay Forest Day, a BFD, in late April to remove the “volunteer” scrub brush and Chinese Tallow trees that have sprung up over the past decade. A handful of hardy Bay Forest folks spent a warm Saturday morning with chain saws, hand saws and loping shears removing the unwanted growth. If you see any of these volunteers… Linda Fouty, Dennis Fouty, Russ Malik, John Branch, Robert Cravens, Tom Sullivan, John Wakeman, Curt Wild and Gene Fisseler… let them know how much better it looks out there now. And watch for more opportunities to contribute your talents to this new part of Bay Forest.

Gardeners by the BayGardeners by the Bay will begin meeting again September 5th with a fall tour of private gardens.

Members and guests enjoy a light brunch from 9:00 to 9:30 am. A brief business meeting is then held prior to the main program. Guest speakers present timely programs of interest to all gardeners. Anyone interested is welcome to visit or join. Our membership includes novice gardeners as well as certified Texas Master Gardeners who are eager to share their expertise and knowledge in response to questions and concerns. Local trips are planned each year to gardens or other places of interest to gardeners. Please call Joanne at 281-286-4938 for information. Looking forward to seeing you!

Willow Shores Park Work DayDid you know we have a beach in Bay Forest? We do now! It's at the Willow Shores Park. If you weren't there to move sand on Saturday, May 19, be sure to thank someone who was, because that was a LOT of work! Bay Landscaping Management helped us out a lot with their bobcat, but even so, we never could have done it without the support and strength of our community volunteers. Our first and second shifts both worked extremely hard to get it finished so our kiddos can finally have their playground. I'd like to offer a huge THANK YOU to all of our volunteers for the sore muscles and aching backs. Here are some fun facts that might help put it in perspective:

Did you know we moved just over 110 cubic yards of sand? Yup, that was SIX 18-WHEELER TRUCK-LOADS full of soft, beautiful, HEAVY, sand.

Did you know that each cubic yard of dry sand weighs 2,700 pounds. I'll save you the math, that's 297,000 pounds of sand. 148 and a half tons! That's almost 75 minivans. WOW.

Did you know that Texas used to be underwater? About a million years ago, in the Cretaceous Period, most of North America (including Texas) was a warm sea. Our beautiful beachy sand was quarried in Central Texas. So we really do have a beach in Bay Forest. And it would never have happened without you. Thank you. Here are a few pictures of the hard work in action. You can find more at www.BayForest.info. Select Activities, then Photo Albums. The Yard of the Month committee is off this month as we catch up on all the end of school year activities. We'll be back driving around the neighborhood again soon so we can honor Bay Forest's best yards next month. If you know of a yard that deserves a nomination, please let us know! We are always excited to get new Neighbor Nominations coming in. You can reach us at [email protected]. Until next month, here are some things to keep in mind when planning your landscaping.

First, decide if you want your yard to be formal and manicured, or natural and free-form, or something in between. These three websites provide pictures and ideas:

Other things to consider at this point:• Do you want your yard to stand out with lots of color

and drama? • Or do you prefer a more subtle look? • Do you need your plants to "work" for you? • Should they provide privacy, screen an unsightly view,

prevent erosion, or just be ornamental?

Next, observe how much light your yard receives, and if it's morning or afternoon light, or full or partial shade.

Then consider how much and how often you are willing to water. If you don't have a sprinkler system and don't always remember to water, you might want to consider drought tolerant plants. Take a look at these websites:

Now for the fun part: selecting your plants. Once you have an idea of how you want your landscape to look, you can go to a nursery or garden center and select plants that thrive in your light and water conditions. Staff at reputable nurseries should be able to help you make informed selections. Remember to allow room for shrubs and trees to grow to their full height and width. The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is a wonderful resource. Their website iswww.wildflower.org.

Spotlight on the CoachesCoach Patra katsigiannisI've always loved the water; I started year-round, USS swimming when I was 12 years old and continued throughout high school. I was on the Varsity swimming and water polo teams at Clear Lake High School for 4 years. I currently play club water polo at Vanderbilt University where I am a rising senior majoring in Healthcare Management.

In my free time, I enjoy watching movies and going to the beach. I have two younger sisters, Hrisa (20) who is an assistant coach, and Ariana (16). I also have the cutest dog around, Ares. My favorite stroke is freestyle but butterfly makes me groan. I am so excited for this year's Blue Marlins season!

Coach Chris FatoraI am a senior at the University of Tampa, where I am studying biochemistry. I began swimming summer league when I was six years old and have been involved every year since then. During high school I swam and played water polo on the Clear Lake team, where I lettered three times in swimming and made it all the way to the state meet my

senior year. I have been a member of the Brooks Blue Marlins swim team since I was in middle school and this is my fourth summer as a coach for the Marlins. I enjoy working with the kids and helping them progress throughout the season. It is truly exciting to see how much they improve each year and how many races they win!

Plan to join us if you are free. It will be a great way to celebrate the beginning of summer, get those creative juices flowing, and relax with your friends and neighbors. Contact Sandra Espinosa at the following e-mail address for more information: [email protected]. Look for more information in the near future via our e-mail distribution list.

Plan to attend the 4th of July Bike Parade and show your spirit by decorating your bike. There should be more information about that event in this issue of the Bay Forest News. Also, look for details on the annual Pool Party and Ice Cream Social to be held in July. Bay Forest Gourmet ClubThe last big party of the year was a huge success. The weather allowed us to enjoy the meal outdoors, and the appetizers, main courses and desserts were delicious as well as the rum punch, wines and other beverages. The Gourmet Club will take the summer off and return for our first big party in September. Here is a dessert recipe that will work with any summer meal. Meanwhile, if you are interested in joining us in the fall, feel free to email Alix Valenti at [email protected].

key Lime CheesecakeCrust⅔ cup all purpose flour⅔ cup sweetened flaked coconut⅓ cup sugar¼ cup (½ stick) unsalted butter, melted

Filling3 8-ounce packages cream cheese, room temperature½ cup sour cream1 cup sugar5 large eggs3 Tbsp fresh Key lime juice2 tsp finely grated Key lime peel¾ tsp vanilla extract

For Crust: Preheat oven to 350°F. Stir flour, coconut and sugar in medium bowl to blend. Drizzle butter over and mix until crumbs stick together; press firmly onto bottom of 9-inch-diameter springform pan. Bake crust until golden brown, about 25 minutes. Cool crust. Stack 3 large sheets of 18-inch wide heavy-duty foil on work surface. Place cake pan in center. Wrap foil snuggly around pan sides. Maintain oven temperature.

For Filling: Using electric mixer, beat cream cheese in large bowl until smooth. Beat in sour cream, then sugar. Beat in eggs 1 at a time, occasionally scraping down sides of bowl. Beat in lime juice, lime peel and vanilla. Pour batter over crust. Place wrapped cheesecake in large roasting pan. Pour enough hot water into roasting pan to come halfway up sides of cheesecake pan. Cover cheesecake pan (not roasting pan) loosely with foil.

Place cheesecake, still in water bath, into oven. Bake 1 hour. Uncover and continue to bake until just set in center when cake pan is gently shaken, about 20 minutes longer. Remove cake from water and place directly into refrigerator; chill uncovered overnight.

Cut around cake to loosen. Remove pan sides. Serve with sweetened whipped cream.

Summer Safety!

Community News

The Houston Police Department wants all children have a safe and enjoyable summer vacation while getting energized for the following school year. However, Child Safety starts with the Parents/Guardians. We all must teach our children to be safe and to follow our lead in personal safety. Take the time to talk with your children about personal safety. Don’t assume your child knows what to do. Read each Safety Tip to them. Review each safety tip and get feedback about their concerns and questions.

Finding a Babysitter• Find a trusted family member/friend.• Get recommendations from friends.• Trade childcare with friends who have kids.• Check the references given by the babysitter.• Listen to your child’s input about the babysitter.• Try to choose only babysitters who are trained in

cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid.• Observe how the babysitter interacts with your child/children.

• Check prospects on the Texas Department of Public Safety’s website for the registered sex offender’s database, visit

https://records.txdps.state.tx.us/DPS_WeB/Sor/index.aspx• *Put together a detailed notebook and include the following

Guide for Teenagers Babysitting• Only baby-sit for parents/guardians you and your parents

know and trust.• Make sure you have important phone numbers and instructions

on how to care for the children written down.• Keep all doors and windows locked at all times.• DO NOT open the door for anyone unless you personally

know the person.• If at nighttime, turn on the porch and outside lights.• If you must leave the house for any reason, take the kid(s)

with you.• Have a mental fire drill plan. Develop more than one way out

of the house in case of a fire.• In case of a fire:

▪ Sound the alarm, yell FIRE as aloud as possible.▪ If safe, close the door to the area where the fire is.▪ Get everyone out of the house as quickly as possible.▪ Keep all the children together and go to a meeting point

Home Burglary Prevention Our homes are as safe as we make them. Unfortunately, if someone wants into our homes badly enough, they can most likely get into them. All we can do is to take the necessary precautions to deter the criminals from getting into our homes. Here are some precautions to take:

keep exterior doors and windows locked at all times; kEEP GArAGE DoorS CLoSED AND LoCkED; Keep shrubbery and other landscaping form hiding the front of your home; Keep outside lights on at night; Do not hide keys outside; Use your alarm, especially when you are away from the house; Keep your vehicles in the garage when possible; Secure cash and jewelry in bonded storage.

VACATIoN: If you are going out of town, make sure your newspapers and mail are picked up. Give your house a "lived in" look if you will be away for a while. Put timers on lights, televisions or radios. You may also want to consider an alarm system. You can also request a Patrol Alert Slip. Go to the Houston Police website online at www.houstonpolice.org. On the Home Page, scroll down to Patrol Alert Slip and fill it out. This will alert officers in your area to check the location throughout the day and night. Many crooks who break into homes commonly know someone who lives in the house. The crook may have been in the house before as a guest and knows where to look for property. Maybe even a trusted friend or relative. Make sure that you inventory your property and write down brands and serial numbers. You may even want to engrave your Texas driver’s license on the back of the property so it can be easily identified if recovered by police. Take pictures of your property to make it easier to work with your insurance company to replace items stolen.

ouTSIDE your HoME: It is good to have outside lighting in the front, back and sides whether it is continuous light or motion detector. Make sure your landscaping does not provide a hiding place for crooks. Clearly display your house numbers. In Houston, a city ordinance requires house numbers to be within 18 inches of the main entrance of the residence. The numbers must be at least 3 inches in height and contrasting colors from the background of the building itself. This makes it easier for police and fire personnel to find your home. If you are going out of town, make sure your newspapers and mail are picked up. Give your house a "lived in" look if you will be away for awhile. Put timers on lights, televisions or radios. You may also want to consider an alarm system.
