Forest. Replacement of mailboxes located at a minimum of five more neighborhood locations are slated for replacement in 2014. Watch for progress on this project during the next several months.

Tree Plantings in Common AreasIt seems like our droughty weather may never end. Some experts say we’ve been in a drier weather pattern since the first months of the 21st century. Others say it could last another dozen years. Still others think we could be near the end of the current dry spell. In any case, there’s no point in waiting forever to start replacing the numerous trees Bay Forest has lost in recent years to drought as well as to other causes. We’ll plant some new trees and irrigate as necessary if conditions don’t improve. We have an urban forestry plan on the shelf and we’ll be using it as a guide as we navigate this project. Plans include choosing new trees that reflect diversity in species and sizes for our community forest. Keep an eye for these coming changes.

Daylight Saving Time 2014 begins at 2:00 AM on Sunday, March 9Remember to set your clocks ahead one hour! Daylight Saving Time is also called summer time or daylight savings time. When DST is not observed, it is called standard time, normal time or winter time. This is a way of making better use of the daylight in the evenings by setting the clocks forward one hour during the longer days of summer, and back again in the fall.

The clock moves ahead (losing one hour) in the spring when DST starts, and falls back one hour (gaining one hour) when DST ends in the fall. To remember which way the clock goes, keep in mind these sayings: “spring forward” and “fall back”.

Exploration Green Ground-breaking Planned for April 12 Phase 1 development will begin this spring near the “point” of the V-space area nearest the Clear Lake Recreation Center and bounded by Reseda Dr. on north, Diana Lane to west, and Ramada Dr. to east. An Exploration Green Groundbreaking event is planned for April 12 in the area that will eventually include a main entrance and plaza, an eight acre lake with 1/2 acre island, hike/bike trail, walking path, forested areas, athletic fields and parking lot, all in addition to providing flood water detention. Plan on attending the Groundbreaking event!

WHAT is Exploration Green? It’s a new 200 acre park with lakes and trails! It’s an environmental conservation area with native trees, grasses, wildlife, and wetlands! It’s a flood water detention area to prevent local flooding!

WHERE is Exploration Green? You can easily find the park-space on a map by searching for “77062”on the Google Maps site and then looking for the outlined V-shape. Or visit the Exploration Green property by entering at street intersections where large white signs with the green V-shaped image of the area map are posted. Come explore! It’s open to the public!

HOW do I find detailed information? Visit the website at www.ExplorationGreen.org. Visitors can find information about Exploration Green’s master plan, flood control, conservation, and recreation efforts. The site includes information on how to donate, how to get involved with volunteer activities, and special event opportunities. Also, email [email protected] and to join the Exploration Green email list for more updates.

HOW do I get involved? Volunteers are needed to help plant trees, plan events, raise money, do research, give talks, and organize education programs. Sign up at the town hall meeting or at ExplorationGreen.org. Follow EG via any of its social media platforms. EG is active on Facebook at “Exploration Green” and Twitter at @XplorationGreen.”

Bay Forest Yard of the Month

It's almost Spring!Usually February is one of my favorite months to be on the Yard of the Month committee. The Azaleas are usually popping out all over, Redbuds are putting a pink glow in the air, and if you look at the Shumard Oak in my front yard just right you can see the green haze of leaf buds about to burst open. Not this year. This winter has dragged on longer than any of us have liked, so the Yard of the Month committee decided to forgo choosing any winners this month. The recent warm days have given us hope that next month we'll be graced with lots of green lawns and pink Azaleas.

If you know of a house that you feel deserves to be recognized as Yard of the Month, please let us know! Send an e-mail to [email protected] with the address and we'll be sure to take a look. Also, we need more members. If you are interested in volunteering, please send your contact information to [email protected]. We'd love to have you join us! (Committee members are not eligible to win Yard of the Month, but you do get to vote on your favorite yards.)

Now that we've had just a taste of spring many of us are eager to get back in the garden, and maybe even tempted to do some re-landscaping. If so, here are some tips taken from the River Oaks Garden Club's book A Garden Book For Houston and the Texas Gulf Coast that will prove very useful to you should you be planning a complete re-do, or maybe just a change.

Be realistic before proceeding with a plan. Decisions made now have long-term implications. Determine how much time and money you can budget to maintain a garden area. Gardens don't stand still. There will be leaves to rake, grass to mow, and shrubs to prune. The plants will need to be planted, watered, and fertilized. If you enjoy gardening, the chores won't seem burdensome. But if you are short of time and funds, think small. Plan for a garden area you can easily and happily care for.

Before you begin, consider these questions:• Will the garden be mainly a yard for entertainment? Relaxation?

Or mainly for the cultivation of plants? Do you plan to cook and serve meals outside?

• Do you prefer a secluded space, or do you like to keep an eye on neighborhood happenings?

• If you have children, plan ahead for play areas to be used differently as they mature. The sand box might become a lily pond; maybe you'll want to put a green house where the swings used to be.

• Do you want to install a watering system? Do you have any drainage issues that need to be addressed?

Draw a plan of everything on your property now, including:• Boundaries of property, indicating easements and power lines.• Your house, garage, and driveway, indicating doors, windows,

downspouts, air conditioner etc...

• A direction indicator (compass mark) showing north, south, east, and west. Knowing where the sun hits your property will help you plant for optimal sun exposure.

• You may want to include existing patios and walkways. Planning around existing features saves lots of effort, but if you really don't like something, now is the time to change it.

• Make note of areas that are dry, slow draining, or sloping. • It's also a good idea to note where your water spigots and

electrical outlets are so you don't accidentally block access to them.

Make a few copies of your plan at this stage. Even if you use tracing paper, you will likely need more than one as you add flower beds, trees, shrubs, lawn etc... to your plan.

Here is the fun part. Go ahead and add those flowers and decorative items. Keep these pointers in mind:• Size matters. Plan for the full grown size of trees and shrubs

and allow adequate room for them to mature. Planting large trees and shrubs too close to the house (within 3 feet) can cause problems with your foundation and pipes.

• Blooming plants, vegetables, and herbs require lots of sun, so it's best to position those beds running east and west if possible.

• Trellises, vines and evergreens make great screens for privacy, and hiding air conditioning units, but they must NEVER block your view of a swimming pool.

• When planning your beds, select plants with similar water and sunlight requirements.

• Unless you are planning a formal hedge, plants of different heights give a more interesting appearance than plants with a uniform height.

• Plants and flowers can be used to attract birds and butterflies to your garden. If you enjoy birds, water in a bird bath should be refreshed often. Stale, stagnant water will only attract mosquitoes.

I hope these tips have helped you plan your perfect garden. The Yard of the Month Committee will be out looking for more fabulous yards this month for the YOTM in April. If you know of a yard that you feel deserves to be Yard of the Month please send the address to [email protected].

Bay Forest Gourmet ClubFor our first small party of the year, we travelled to Lisbon to savor the hearty cooking and fine wines of Portugal. Portugal is best known for its fortified wines of Madeira and Port. However, there are several other wine regions producing excellent red and white wines such as the Douro, Dao, Bairrada, Vinho Verde, Terras do Sado and Alentejo. The main course was a chicken stew served over rice with spinach. For dessert we had a flan pudding with chocolate cake. Wines served included Quinta Valdoeiro (red), Esporoao (white), and Delaforce (Port). Of course we started out with several appetizers including the following quiche.

ROSEMARY’S LINGUIÇA QUICHEBasic recipe:4 eggs and 2 cups light cream, beaten together½ cup shredded Swiss cheese½ cup shredded mild Cheddar cheese¼ lb. linguiça, skinned (Portuguese pork sausage– can be purchased at Spec’s downtown in the frozen food case; if not, use any somewhat spicy sausage)Dry onion flakes8 slices bacon, fried crisp and crumbled6 large or 12 small mushrooms, slicedPinch of salt and pepper9” pastry pie shell, unbaked

Sprinkle the onion flakes into the pie shell. Add the crumbled bacon and linguiça, the sliced mushrooms and the shredded cheeses. Season the egg and cream mixture and pour into the pastry shell.

Bake for 15 minutes at 425 degrees. Then lower the heat to 300 degrees and bake for a further 30 minutes or until the custard has set.

If you wish, you may use chopped cooked lobster meat, shrimp or other seafood instead of the linguiça.

Arguments for notgetting busy outside are irrelevant! It's time to get busy!

Get busy with the lawn fertilization schedule, get busy planting tomato and early vegetable gardens, get busy pruning fruit trees. In fact, it's time to prune every manner of tree. It's also time to plant trees, scalp the lawn, dethatch the lawn, aerate, mulch ... you get the point.

"But, Randy," you may be asking, "what if we get another freeze between now and, say, March 15?"

Well, since no forecasters seem to be predicting a freeze between now and April 1, I say that line of thinking is totally irrelevant. Take a look at the Weather Channel's 10-day forecast. With no obvious potential freezing weather predicted for the next week and half (much less anything even below 40), I think it's absolutely time to get busy.

So, don't get wimpy on me!

If, however, you are great at "creative avoidance*," you probably couldn't care less about what I'm preaching ... you'll find some weather prognosticator using wooly worms or something that will help you justify blowing off all the work that really needs to be done soon.

But here's my message to anyone interested in getting to work, even if we were to get a tiny bit of cold air between now and, let's say March 21:• Lawn Fertilization Schedule - No effect! It's about soil

temperature, and one night at 32 is irrelevant.• Planting tomatoes - If the temperature drops below 40, we would

need to protect with warming ideas. So at 32, we would have already done it. Therefore, an argument for creative avoidance is again irrelevant!

• Pruning fruit trees - Temps would need to be in the low 20s to have a negative effect on newly pruned fruit trees. So... IRRELEVANT!

• Pruning big trees - This is supposed to be done December through February anyway, so now you're actually running out of time. Delay is irrelevant!

• Planting all trees - If you can transplant containerized trees in January, right after a freeze, you don't even have to ask if it's fair game today, do you?

• Scalping the lawn - Here's some relevance: if you had a freshly scalped lawn and we got a freeze, just the top ¼ inch or so might get singed. That's all!

• Time to aerate - If you guessed irrelevant again, you're right! A night in the low 30s doesn't have much effect on soil temperature.

• Time to mulch - It's never a bad time, and since we believe it's never too late to do the right thing, there's never a bad time to mulch. So don't let any cold weather stop you from doing the right thing.

Randy’s Lawn Fertilization ScheduleFor southern grasses including: St. Augustine, Bermuda and Zoysia

FERTILIZE — four times a year:Late February-Early March - apply a simple 15-5-10 for an early green-up. Most companies that make slow-release fertilizers also make a nonslow-release 15-5-10 that provides for a quick two week green up before we get to the heart of the fertilizer schedule. Some people will be tempted to use a weed-and-feed at this time, but if you’ve been following the GardenLine herbicide schedule, there should never be a need. However, spot weed-and-feed treatments are recommended for those with turf-only landscapes or landscapes that have been established for many years. Warning: Most weed-and-feeds contain Atrizine which burns roots of young trees and shrubs.

Late March-Early April - apply slow-release 3-1-2 ratio fertilizers. Recommended formulations:

19-4-10 Nitro Phos Super Turff 18-4-6 Fertilome Southwest Greenmaker 18-0-6 Fertilome’s Zero Phosphate Formula 15-5-10 Southwest Fertilizer Premium Gold 19-5-9 Easy Gro Premium 21-5-10 Mr. C’s (Cornelius brand)

HERBICIDE — three times a year: (Pre-Emergent controls to prevent weeds)

February-March - Use the pre-emergent controls for grassy weeds again, to prevent such weeds as Crabgrass, Goosegrass and Dallisgrass from popping up late in the spring and summer. Again, use the grassy pre-emergent like Amaze, Betasan, Balan orTreflan. There is also Barricade, Dimension or Pendimethlin as a2-in-1 control.

INSECTICIDES — It is our belief on GardenLine, as a way to be kind to the environment, that you do not put down insecticidesunless you know you have a problem. However, be prepared during the hot summer months — July through September — to attack chinch bug damage. This will show up as irregular shaped spots in the lawn along the concrete. Any liquid insecticide, like Permethrin or Cypermethrin, will treat the spot well. Then apply agranular insecticide like Deltamethrin or granular Permethrin in abroadcast applicator throughout the rest of the yard.

The three mulches you should avoid at all possible costs in the landscape are:1. Dyed Mulches2. Ash/Boiler Ash Infused Mulch (Those are the really black ones)3. Rubber Mulches

There are places and uses for each of these mulches, just not in the landscape, flower or vegetable beds of gulf coast gardens. As an example, I’m totally cool with rubber mulches for playgrounds and dog runs.

Houston Symphony Coming to Clear LakeThe Houston Symphony, yes, as in “downtown,” is coming to the Clear Lake area to play a concert on Saturday, March 15 at 7:30 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. The local Houston Symphony League Bay Area (HSLBA) sponsored the Houston Symphony playing a concert in our area about 20 years ago, but that’s been a long time. The orchestra coming is forty members of the string section under the leadership of Frank Huang, the concertmaster, playing a double role as leader and soloist. His brilliant technique, precision, and artistry will enthrall you. This will be a fabulous evening of two classical favorites--Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings and Vivaldi’s eternal The Four Seasons. Experience this live performance of two exhilarating works in which the strings take the limelight.

Mr. Huang joined the Houston Symphony as concertmaster in 2010. A native of Sugarland, he has played and won violin competitions all over the world. He made his debut at the age of 11 in a nationally broadcast concert and has since established a major career as a violin virtuoso. He was the First Prize Winner of Walter W. Naumburg Foundation’s Violin Competition and the Hannover International Violin Competition, among others, and has performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras and on NPR’s Performance Today, Good Morning America and CNN’s American Morning. An esteemed chamber musician, he held the position of first violinist of the Grammy Award-winning Ying Quartet and was selected by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center to be a member of the prestigious Chamber Music II program. He serves on the faculty at Rice University and the University of Houston and teaches at the Bowdoin International Music Festival, the Texas Music Festival, and the Great Mountains conductorless chamber orchestra based in New York.

Update on the Clear Lake HS Rebuild

The groundbreaking for the new CLHS is April 30, 2014!The CLHS Student Council, led by Cara Sue Ellis, along with the CCISD Office of Communication, led by Elaina Polsen, are collaborating on organizing a very special event to celebrate the new high school. The event, ‘The Taste of Lake,’ and the ribbon cutting ceremony will take place on the grounds of MB campus. The ribbon cutting ceremony is from 5:30 – 6:00 pm with the Taste of the Lake event to follow. I will share more details with you in each of the next several weeks about the special activities planned for the event. StuCo is designing the poster to advertise the T-shirt design contest. Spread the news of this celebration to your friends, alumni of Lake, former teachers you know who taught here, and everyone who has been a part of Lake in some way, shape or form in the past 40 years. We are in the process of finalizing the plans for summer athletic and fine arts camps due to the fact that the parking lots for the athletic fields and A and B lots will be torn up to prepare for the new construction for Phase I which is slated to begin in the summer of 2014.
