LOW INVENTORY MAKES A SELLER'S

MARKET“We commissioned Edrina Fitting

(Ladybug Realtors) to sell our daughter’s home at 1743 Emerald Lake Court in the Bay Pointe Subdivision. Needless to say, the house needed

extensive renovations before putting it up for sale. She worked tirelessly to stage the home in order

to generate curb appeal so we could get the highest price possible.

Edrina made herself available night and day to answer any of our questions. She was so patient and helpful every step of the way. We couldn’t have been more pleased with Edrina’s service and attention to detail.

Without hesitation, if we ever have to buy or sell a home again, we will definitely contact Edrina. She is gifted talented and

definitely knows her market.”~David And Shirley Schaefer~

Landscaping at the PoolWhile the work to build the addition to the storage building was moving fences, dirt and bushes around, we decided to make “lemonade” and complete some needed landscaping. Five new pads were installed to locate additional tables and a sidewalk extension was completed for the area behind the pool pavilion.

Pool PlasterThe plastering of the pool has been completed. The pool is now refilled with water and the chemistry is being fine-tuned.

Repairs to mortar on Pool BuildingOver the years the pool chemicals have caused the erosion of the mortar holding some of the bricks in place. This maintenance item has been completed to protect and preserve our building.

New Tables in the Willow Shores ParkThree new tables have arrived and are being installed in the Willow Shores Park. The park is getting more use and additional tables by the big toy will be a welcome addition.

Repair damage to perimeter fence Even though we are planning and looking forward to the replacement of the fence, it still must be maintained. There are two sections of the fence that are scheduled to be repaired. As a note of caution – be careful around the fence if you see a loose section. Report it right away to [email protected].

New Light in Willow Shores ParkHomeowners have pointed out the need to provide better lighting in an area of the park. While lighting is for security purposes it is also for safety purposes while homeowners are using the park in the evening. The new light pole will be installed at the corner by Montwood and Hillside Oaks Drives.

Neighborhood NewsHave a Talk with Your Lawn ServiceLawn cuttings (and other trash) should not be placed by the curb more than 24 hours before trash pick-up on Mondays and Thursdays. Most of the time this occurs when you have your lawn service come on days other than Sunday or Wednesday. If you are not having your service come on Sunday or Wednesday, please ask them to place the clippings at your back door or other location other than the street. You will need to then bring them to the curb for trash pick-up.

Houston Town Hall Meeting – in Clear LakeHouston City Council Member Dave Martin will host a town hall meeting on Thursday, February 25, 2016 from 6:30 pm until 8:30 pm at Space Center Houston located at 1601 NASA Road 1 in the Destiny Theater. We are invited to attend to hear from city and community representatives about ongoing capital improvement projects and hear from newly elected Mayor Sylvester Turner.

In Mayor Turner’s acceptance speech, he stated that he is mayor for all Houstonians - irrespective of where they live in the city or who they voted for. This is an opportunity for us in Clear Lake and Bay Forest to help him deliver on that commitment. I hope there is standing room only with many people from Bay Forest. The mayor needs to know that we are an engaged community and who to call when he wants to know what's on our minds down here.

E-Waste Recycling – in Clear LakeAn e-waste recycling event for Clear Lake residents is to take place on Saturday, March 5th from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm at the Ellington/Clear Lake Neighborhood Recycling Center located at Highway 3 and Brantly Avenue. This is a great opportunity to dispose of those old appliances, latex paints, used oil and dead batteries.

Letter to the EditorI raised an issue concerning the lighting at the park early this morning. This evening Dennis and Issac Fouty met me at the park to discuss my concern. Without making any commitments they agreed to suggest a possible improvement that will not bother nearby neighbors!

Regardless of the outcome I appreciate their quick response! –Mark Thomas

Bay Forest BuncoOne of the first Bunco groups to form in Bay Forest was started 29 years ago by Kathy Parish. Still going strong, they recently enjoyed a Bunco Valentine Party. Upon entering, each guest was presented with diamond, heart-shaped, rose-colored lens glasses. There was a path lined with sparkly hearts leading to the kitchen where everyone mingled while enjoying appetizers, wine or sparkling water. It was a fun evening with lots of laughter. The evening ended with a great dessert.

We meet at 7 pm on said Mondays except November and December, on these months we choose an alternate date. We are a friendly group who enjoys neighborly get-togethers and are not as serious about being the world’s greatest bridge experts. We enjoy coffee, soft drinks, now and then a glass of wine, and perhaps a dessert.

We are currently searching for substitute players for our group and we would love to find neighbors who like to play for fun! If you are interested in getting to know Bay Forest Bridge players, you are a lady, and you would like to just have an enjoyable evening playing bridge, call Kathy Vallon at 832-259-4440. Bay Forest Yard of the MonthSpring has come early to Bay Forest this year. In fact, we never really had a winter. So the blooms are arriving early too. Usually our February Yard of the Month is about potential (which yard do we most looking forward to seeing?), or preservation (which yard has managed to hang on to a few flowers, or kept the grass green?). This February gave us many beautiful options, and these two yards sailed to the top. A big Yard of the Month congratulations to Yajun and Liming Zheng at 2119 Hillside Oak, and Rhonda and Robert Tausend at 15719 Elk Park. Wow! These yards look great. We can hardly wait to see what they look like next month! It’s not every day that we have a front yard vegetable garden nominated for Yard of the Month, but when it looks as nice as the Zheng’s does, we love it! Nestled between the Azaleas and Begonias, are Corn, Kale, and other leafy greens. Holly bushes and topiaried Ligustrum give this garden an elegant, manicured look, while unexpected things, like the Papaya tree, keep it fun and interesting. This yard is an excellent example of planting your vegetables where they will thrive, while still keeping a beautiful, elegant front yard.

Bay Forest Yard of the Month

Some people have described the Tausend’s front yard as “stunning,” and they are correct! One of the most appealing aspects of this yard, is that all of the plants are easy to find, and don’t require a lot of pampering to do well in our Houston climate. This yard fairly sings with purple Lantana, Sweet Alyssum, purple and yellow Pansies, Begonias, Fox Tail Ferns, Shrimp Plants, Roses, Azaleas, and more! The Crape Myrtle won’t bloom for a few more months, but even now it provides sculptural interest, especially once the landscape lights come on at night.

15719 Elk Park

If you know of a yard that you feel should be Yard of the Month, please let us know! Send an email with the address to [email protected] and we will gladly consider it. We are always looking to expand our committee, so if you appreciate a beautiful yard (and obviously you do because you’re reading this) please join our committee. Send an email with your name and contact info to [email protected]. Black Thumbs welcome!

Bay Forest Gourmet ClubFor our first party this year we tried something completely different. Instead of a member couple hosting a dinner party, we went to cooking school and prepared and ate a delicious three-course meal. We started out with stuffed mushrooms and a veggie dip as appetizers, followed by a main course of lemon chicken piccata, pasta with meatball sauce, and salad. For dessert we had a tiramisu mousse. Except for the veggie dip and salad, all dishes were prepared by gourmet members, including fresh fettucine. The meal was excellent and we had much fun preparing the dishes. Our wonderful hostess, Ginger Sprouse, and her husband Dean guided us through some of the intricacies of using the pasta rolling machine. Ginger hosts several cooking classes each month, some just for kids, at the Art of the Meal, 354 Nasa Parkway Suite F, Houston, TX 77058 (behind Akima). She can be reached at 713-933-8241 or on the web at www.artofthemeal.net for more information. Here is the recipe for the tiramisu mousse.

Tiramisu Mousse1 ½ teaspoons instant coffee ¼ cup hot water1 cup heavy whipping cream, cold 1 ½ cups powdered sugar 8 ounces cream cheese 1 teaspoon vanilla extract1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powderChocolate Chips

1. Place the instant coffee in the hot water and stir. Let cool for 5 minutes.

2. Beat heavy whipping cream until stiff peaks form. Chill until ready to use. (Alternately: you can use an 8 ounce carton of whipped topping. See note.)

3. Mix powdered sugar and cream cheese with a hand mixer until smooth. Mix in vanilla extract and 1 tablespoon of the coffee. Add up to the entire amount of coffee, depending on how strong you want your tiramisu. (I added all of it because that’s how I roll.) Mix in vanilla.

4. Fold whipped cream into coffee mixture gently. Place the tiramisu in piping bag with a large tip

5. Pipe a small amount the bottom of each of 4 serving glasses. 6. Top the layer with a dusting of cocoa powder. 7. Continue layering the tiramisu and cocoa powder. 8. Top with chocolate chips

HPD Unveils Two New Crime Maps, Stats FunctionsSocial Media Coordinator Officer Douglas from Houston PoliceSeveral asked how you can help HPD. The best way to help us is to get involved with your community. Each station has a community service officer who coordinates monthly Positive Interaction Program (PIP) Meetings. The Positive Interaction Program holds monthly PIP meetings featuring speakers from different divisions (Burglary and Theft, Homicide, K-9, Helicopters, etc.) explaining how their division operates. Lots of other things happen at PIP meetings: citizens give crime tips, members may collect food for the hungry in their community or raise money for scholarships, and you’ll have an opportunity to meet your neighbors.

To find the PIP meeting in your area, please go towww.houstontx.gov/police/pip/divisional.htm

Here is the HPD BEAT MAP so you can see which station services your area . Many of you asked about crime statistics in your area. In response to updated technology and new mapping tools, HPD has two new crime mapping functions now available on the HPD website. Our crime stats webpage: www.houstontx.gov/police/cs/index-2.htm

CrimeReports: www.crimereports.com

Raidsonline: www.raidsonline.com

The same UCR reports and statistics will still be found on the website, but the previous map has been replaced with a new, embedded map provided by CrimeReports.com. The map allows citizens to search for crimes in their area in a more user-friendly fashion. It will also allow citizens to receive periodic emailed crime alerts as often as they choose and to submit anonymous crime tips directly to Crime Stoppers via the website.

A second map, through RaidsOnline, is available through a link on the HPD website. The website has multiple graphing and analytical tools provided by BAIR Analytics. This will allow users the ability to view density maps, and view and graph multiple data points.

A short introductory video on the features of the new crime maps can be found on the HPD YouTube channel.

Thank you, everyone, for your emails and for supporting HPD.

Shared with all areas in Houston Police in Crime & Safety.

GardenLine Tips by Randy Lemmon 740 KTRH

You've Got a Green Light to FertilizeThis week's message is as simple as it gets: It's time to start the fertilizer part of my lawn care schedule!

Often, I've recommended waiting until the end of February to do the early green-up part, but since the forecast is offering up significantly warmer temperatures for the coming days, a huge window of opportunity just opened up.

If you're familiar with the schedule and the early green-up with a 15-5-10 or any organic lawn food, you can stop reading right now. Go get your products and get busy.

But if you're new to the schedule, keep reading for why we do what we do. And when we do it.

My version of the early green-up fertilization calls for a bona fide 15-5-10 quick-acting product. Nitro-Phos Imperial has been my go-to fertilizer for over 15 years. But it's just a fertilizer — it's not a weed-and-feed and not a slow-release product. It works fast and for just 30-45 days. By the time it has run its course, you should be ready for the schedule's April application of a slow/controlled-release fertilizer.

If you're hesitant to use a synthetic fertilizer, any organic fertilizer I recommend will work just fine for this. They're also great if you just want to add some organic matter to the ground and get a little green-up out of it.

Those new to the schedule may be asking why I don't recommend weed-and-feeds. My biggest issue is with the atrazine-based products — they burn the roots of nearby trees and large shrubs. Rather than kick off another of my diatribes against atrazine, I'll just point you to this article on the negative consequences of its use. If you come across a Trimec-based 15-5-10 weed-and-feed, I don't have a problem with that — its weed-killing aspects are not as damaging to the environment. However, Trimec-based products only target broadleaf weeds, and have absolutely no effect on grassy weeds. Also know that those weed-and-feeds often won't work if you don't follow the label instructions precisely.

My schedule also calls for a pre-emergent herbicide application in February. That's really simple as well — put down Barricade, Dimension® Specialty Herbicide, or anything with pendimethlin. They're all 2-in-1 pre-emergence formulas — they block both grassy and broadleaf weed seeds from germinating.

And one more little reading assignment related to weed-killing and fertilizing at the same time: my Top 10 Rules of Herbicide Use.

To find these products, start with any of the independent nurseries and garden centers I've talked about for years on GardenLine. Numerous feed stores also carry them. And, of course, the stores of the Greater Houston Ace Retailer Group. I can assure you that very few of the products on my schedule can be found at big-box stores.

So, it's time to get busy starting today! And if you need clarification on any of this stuff, give me a holler on the radio show this weekend.
