when/if we do, we’ll have some of the $$ in the bank and can determine then how best to cover the rest of the cost.

• Is this still the right path?

There was the comment from someone in the audience that it was not an accurate portrayal if it did not consider the size of the neighborhood. So Denis went to HCAD and got the num-ber of home/parcels for each neighborhood and then calculated a "crimes per 100 homes" number so it would take into account the size of the neighborhood. The neighborhoods moved around on the list a little but not much. Below are the rankings. Crime Overall. Highest to Lowest1. Bay Glen 242. Bay Oaks 203. Bay Pointe 134. Bay Forest 135. BAY FOREST NEWS NOVEMBER 2014

The Bay Forest Oktoberfest was held on Saturday, October 25, at the pool park. This was a joint event sponsored by the Bay Forest Mommies Club and the Bay Forest Community Association, along with Edrina Fitting. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect! There were delicious bratwurst sausages along with hot dogs, plus lots of soft-baked pretzels dusted with either cinnamon-sugar or salt. Kids played in the park, decorated pumpkins, and munched on various Halloween treats. The adults got a chance to welcome new people to the neighborhood and visit with old friends. All-in-all it was a great afternoon. If you have never taken the time to come to one of these neighborhood-sponsored events in our neighborhood, please do so at the next opportunity. Just walk up with a smile on your face, and someone will usually come over to say ‘hello.’ If no one does, then you are welcome to walk up to them, and introduce yourself. This is a wonderfully friendly neighborhood. Every chance that we get to make new connections with other families in our neighborhood adds to that core friendliness and to the strength of our neighborhood!

Many thanks to the three sponsors of Bay Forest Oktoberfest 2014!

Now that all that is out of the way, here is the process. Between the 10th and the 15th of almost every month, one or two of our committee members will drive around their half of the neighborhood (El Dorado is the dividing line) and select the 3 or 4 houses that they personally feel are the best candidates for that particular month. So we have teams on each side of El Dorado driving around looking at yards once a month. Occasionally we receive a "Neighbor Nomination" from a Bay Forest resident (send yours to [email protected]) and those are always included in our final nominees list. If we get 3 or 4 eligible "Neighbor Nominees" on one side, then we will not drive around looking for more nominees for that side.

Once I have the nominations from each side of our neighborhood (around the 15th of the month), I send them all out to the whole committee for voting. Each committee member then has until the 19th of the month to take a look at every nominated house on both sides of El Dorado and vote for their personal favorites on each side. When all the votes have been received, I total them up and announce the winners.

In case of a tie, the first deciding factor is if one of the yards is a "Neighbor Nominee.” If so, it will get the win. If there are no

Everything you ever wanted to know about the Committee Process:

Occasionally, when I'm out in the neighborhood, people will find out I'm on the Yard of the Month committee. Almost always, their initial reaction is to ask how the yards are selected. People love to see our gorgeous yards, but aren't aware of the selection process. So, I thought this would be a good time to explain how our committee works. Maybe you would like to join us?

The Bay Forest Yard of the Month Committee is made up entirely of volunteer Bay Forest homeowners. We do not have any special qualifications except that we all appreciate a well manicured front lawn. We are looking for a few more volunteers, so if you have about half an hour a month I'd love to have you join our team! Contact me, Anita Burns, at [email protected] and let me know. I'd be thrilled to meet you!

We do have a few requirements for our yards to be chosen as Yard of the Month. First, winners need to be in good standing with the Bay Forest Homeowners Association. All nominees are sent to our Association manager who confirms that they are in good standing. If there is an issue with an address he simply says no. Next, yards are only eligible every 3 years. Previous winning yards, even if the owners have upgraded their landscape or sold the house, will not be considered again until the 3 year mark has passed. Finally, members of the Bay Forest Board of Directors and Yard of the Month Committee members are NOT eligible to win.

Bay Forest Yard of the Month

"Neighbor" nominees then the second place votes are considered. If there is still a tie then they will share the title and each Yard will receive a sign. This has only happened once to my knowledge. I also try to contact the winning homeowner before we place the sign in their yard, but sometimes we just have to surprise them. I say "try" because I no longer keep a paper phone book, and sometimes it can be challenging to find accurate homeowner contact information on-line. So, please, log in to the Bay Forest website (Bayforest.info), go to the address book (under Resources) and add your contact information. It only takes a moment and makes it so easy for your neighbors to reach you if there is an emergency. Remember, this site is password protected, so only Bay Forest residents have access.

Bay Forest Yard of the Month

Yard of the Month signs go up (and down) around the 20th of each month. We usually present the sign to the homeowners in the evening, and I'll take photos for the Bay Forest News at that time, weather permitting. Also at that time I remove the signs from the previous month's Yard of the Month winners.

We still need a few more committee members!!! And your "Neighbor Nominees" really are a big help, so please, send them to us at [email protected].

We'll see you next month when we are out driving around again. Until then, please enjoy these Yard of the Month Highlights from this past year. "

Bay Forest Gourmet ClubOur first party of the 2014-2015 Gourmet season was held on October 11, and the club travelled to Italy to celebrate the movie “Roman Holiday.” Several delicious appetizers, main courses, and desserts were served, together with a Prosecco cocktail and a pinot grigio and a Tuscan red. Here is the recipe for one of the desserts – keep reading, another will be posted next month.

3. Flour pastry cloth and rolling pin. Roll Sweet Crust dough to fit into a large pie pan, trim and flute edges. Pour filling into pie shell. Beat an egg yolk, then dribble over the top of filling and gently spread to glaze the surface.

4. Bake for 1 hour or until toothpick inserted into middle comes out clean. Serve chilled.

GardenLine Tips 740 KTRH

by Randy Lemmon

If the winterizer is cheap, should you stock up?!For the past few weeks in these blog posts and on the GardenLine radio show, I have noted how important it is to get started on lawn winterization and the order in which the three treatments should be applied.

But I got an interesting and thoughtful question recently via Facebook about stocking up on fertilizer, herbicide and fungicide for next year.

“If there's a good deal on Nitro-Phos Fall Special, should I stock up on it for next year?” ~ Emil B., South Houston

The simple answer is YES - do it! If, that is, you have appropriate storage space. In other words, leaving bags of fertilizer out on the back porch for a year is a big no-no!

This is a subject I've covered during times when the cost of petroleum and the expense of transporting such bulk goods were at all-time highs, forcing product prices up as well. Right now, though, there seem to be some great deals on winterization fertilizers at some local and regional companies.

Most unopened bags of fertilizer have a shelf life of 1-1½ years, as long as they are stored in a garage or climate-controlled area AND in plastic storage containers. An attached garage would provide better climate control than a detached garage, but use storage bins like the kind you have for Christmas decorations — they can be

adequate almost anywhere there's not an overwhelming amount of humidity. Storing outside in Houston's humid climate will reduce shelf life to mere weeks.

If you can find a garden center, hardware store, nursery, or feed store that still has bags of slow-release fertilizers in 3-1-2 or 4-1-2 ratios (per my fertilization schedule), you can even stock up for next spring and summer fertilizations. But I wouldn't advise stocking up past next year's winterizer.

By the way, the window for doing all fall fertilization treatments is closing. But, thankfully, because of recent mild and moderate temperatures, it's closing slower than in years past. Bottom line, though, is that all the treatments that are part of my schedule should be down by the first two weeks of November! Just 14 days!! And it's absolutely essential to have the fertilizer down before the first frost or freeze, since fertilization is all about soil temperature.

School NewsInnovations at CLHS:Recently, it has been challenging for students, parents, and staff as construction intensified. However, Clear Lake High School took leaps in innovative practices. A total of forty-eight teachers in all grade levels and core content areas co-taught and facilitated student use of the CCISD tablet computers and other technologies. We also took about 20 minutes on Wednesday to take historic pictures as students bid farewell to the Krueger parking lot. The CLHS audio-visual class marked the beginning of a new era by taking pictures from a drone camera. We also had aerial pictures from a plane and, of course, pictures taken from the roof of Krueger Field House.
