Bay Forest Gourmet ClubMARK YOUR CALENDARS! The first Gourmet Club party will be on October 11th at 7:00 pm and is open to all members and Bay Forest residents interested in joining.

This year the theme for all of our parties will be Classic Movies. “Roman Holiday” is our first featured film. For more information, contact Anita Burns at [email protected].

Meanwhile, enjoy the cooler weather – perfect for football, and here is an easy recipe you can use for your next tailgating party.

Baked Garlic with Feta Cheese6 whole heads of garlic2 Tbsp Olive OilCoarse saltFreshly ground black pepper1/3-1/2 pound feta cheese4 oz. cream cheese, softened

Remove papery outer skin from the garlic heads, leaving the clusters of cloves intact. Arrange the heads in a baking dish large enough to hold them comfortably. Drizzle a few drops of olive oil on each cluster. Bake for 30-45 minutes, at 350°, basting with oil every 15 to 20 minutes until garlic is tender and golden brown. Cool; using a sharp knife, remove the top of each garlic cluster. Season with salt and freshly ground pepper.

To serve: Mix together feta cheese and cream cheese and put in container. On large platter, arrange garlic clusters around the container of cheese mixture. Using a butter knife, spread a plain cracker with roasted garlic; top with feta cheese. Alternatively, slice a baguette into ¼-½ inch rounds and toast both sides until crispy.

Bay Forest Yard of the MonthOur winners from the South side this month, Susan and David Cowen of 2210 Villa Rose, have an expansive corner lot with a lot of grass and wide flower beds. Instead of trying to fill every square inch with blooms, they have focused attention on the front walkway, and allowed the majority of their flower beds to remain mostly green, with subtle touches of color popping up here and there. Topiaried Cypress trees anchor the base of the walkway and mark the beginning of a colorful path lined with Lantana, Penta, Salvia, and Black Eyed Susans. The front porch ties the landscape together with cheerful yellow Mums and a watchful owl.

The side yard slopes dramatically toward the street, so a retaining wall is used to create a level bed, and prevent soil erosion. Bradford Pears arch over this space and provide shade for the house. African Iris and Liriope are planted around the trees. Ligustrum bushes, Pom-Poms, Variegated Ginger, Encore Azaleas and even Foxtail Fern fill out the beds across the front of the house.

Page 7: Bay Forest News, October 2014

Bay Forest Yard of the Month

Our winners on the North side, John and Shirley Poffengarger of 15302 Montwood Court, have a rather petite front yard at the end of a cul-de-sac. This neatly manicured yard may be small, but it is lush with layers, textures, shapes and shades of green. Oak trees dominate the landscape here, even after the Poffenbargers had 3 large trees removed a few years ago. This culling not only allows sunlight to reach the grass and flower beds, but it also provides room for the remaining trees to grow stronger and be more stable during extreme weather. Liriope and white stone

serve as a retaining wall around the base of an oak tree where Begonias are planted. Liriope, Foxtail Fern and Pentas are layered in front of trimmed Ligustrum shrubs on the left of the house, while the right side has Azeleas tucked in behind them.

Sod Webworms Were A Big Problem This September I've been getting a lot of email in the past two weeks about "worms" and "caterpillars" in listeners' yards.

I also received messages and a few phone calls on last weekend's GardenLine show about moths hovering about in the early morning hours. And I've been looking at a few turf samples in my consulting business that obviously weren't damaged by chinch bugs, take-all patch or brownpatch.

So, if you know grass damage is not from chinch bugs, grub worms or fungal diseases (yet), then the problem in late September and early October is most likely cutworms or sod webworms.

The larvae of several kinds of moths, such as sod webworms and in some cases cutworms, feed on grass leaves and can damage turf extensively. The insects can be distinguished by their feeding habits and injury symptoms.

Sod webworms and cutworms are night-feeding caterpillars. Both feed around a small burrow or tunnel in the grass and carry the leaf blades into the tunnel. Silken threads can be seen in the early morning covering the tunnel of a sod webworm.

The cutworm is often found on golf greens after the greens are aerated. The aeration holes provide an ideal habitat for the cutworm larvae during the day, and they feed around the hole at night.

Armyworms are appropriately named because they can be seen moving across turf in large numbers, but I haven't (yet) spotted those at this time of the year. In contrast to sod webworms and cutworms, armyworms feed day and night and leave the grass with a white skeletonized appearance.

Adult sod webworms are small, white-to-gray moths with a snout-like projection on the front of their heads. While resting, the wings of the moth are closely folded about the body. They're frequently seen fluttering over the turf in the early evening. The females scatter eggs at random as they fly over the grass. Apparently, the moths are attracted to dark-green, healthy turf. The eggs hatch in 7-10 days, and the larvae begin feeding on grass leaves. As they mature, the larvae build silk-lined tunnels through the thatch layer

and into the soil. The slender larvae reach ¾ inch in length and are light brown with several rows of dark spots along the entire length of the body.

The first signs of sod webworm damage are areas of unevenly clipped grass and patches of brown or closely clipped grass. The larvae remain active for several weeks, then pupate. Adults appear about a week later. Their life cycle is completed in 5-6 weeks with several generations per year.

Sod webworms are readily controlled by most liquid insecticides approved for turfgrass such as bifenthrin, malathion or any of the synthetic pyrethroids or carbamates out there. However, these are short-residual materials, and repeat applications are required to control the next generation. I have usually recommended liquid insecticides rather than granular types, similar to the way we control chinch bugs, to be sure of breaking the egg cycle.

A new twist in controlling any kind of worm in the yard is the introduction of BT (Bacillus Thuringiensis), the organic worm and caterpillar control, as a "yard treatment." Okay, it's not altogether new, just a new way to deliver an old standard. Until this year, although BT has been a known organic worm and caterpillar killer, it just wasn't recommended as a turf treatment because its smaller containers made it too expensive. Standard BT formulas came in 8-ounce bottles, not intended for dial-n-spray or pump-up spray treatments. Today, however,

there's a "ready-to-spray" BT product from Summit that you just hook on the end of the hose. You may already know Summit as the manufacturer of other BT-based products such as mosquito dunks.

The only caution in this cutworm/sod webworm discussion is that brownpatch is also rearing its ugly head right now, thanks to last week's 60-80 temperature split. The problem, as I've seen it in email questions and consultation visits, is that people are somewhat successfully treating the worm problem, but still seeing growing patches of unhealthy grass. Could it be brownpatch? Well, if you think that's possible, check this brownpatch tip sheet which covers both sod webworms and fungal diseases.

And by the way, although treatment for cutworms is exactly the same as that for sod webworms, I should mention that cutworm moths are grayish-brown to black and have a wingspread of 1-2 inches. They're only active at night. Females lay their eggs singly or in groups of 2 or 3 on the leaves and stems of grasses. The eggs hatch in 7-10 days and the larvae begin feeding. Cutworm larvae are grayish-black, smooth "worms" that curl into a ball or "C" shape when disturbed. The cutworms grow to a length of 1-2 inches, are usually plump (in contrast to the slender sod webworm), and may be spotted or striped. Several generations of cutworms are produced annually. And while they most often appear in early spring, if the weather is just right — like right now — they will appear in the fall.

CCISD NEWS

They've Got Us Covered!Community partners come in all shapes and sizes, and every now and then, just in the nick of time! The surge in rainy weather over the past month brought with it additional challenges for campuses undergoing extensive construction and rebuilds. M.D. Anderson in the Bay Area saved the day through their donation of hundreds of umbrellas for both Clear Lake High School and McWhirter Elementary. Hundreds of Falcons, student and staff, switching classes between the Main Building and the Ninth Grade Center, are sheltered on their walk thanks to the umbrellas, as are the Astronauts at McWhirter Elementary. Clear Creek ISD is grateful to all of our community partners who are there for our students and staff, come rain or shine!

CCISD Bond Construction Update: Summer Maintenance Projects Completed

Progress is visible on Clear Creek ISD's new stadium located at 1955 W. NASA Blvd. in League City. The Challenger Columbia Stadium site has been cleared, site utilities are almost complete, the main loop road has been lime stabilized and the paving is being poured. The slab has also been poured for the field house and steel beams are going up. The new facility is the result of a $367 million bond package passed by voters in May 2013. Other Bond 2013 projects include the demolition of McWhirter Elementary School in Webster and construction of a new campus. A rebuild of Clear Lake High School, major repairs and additions at Clear Brook High School as well as a new gym for Clear Springs High School and more science classrooms at Creekside Intermediate School. Preliminary schematic layouts of athletics, dance, fine arts, ROTC

Seeking Committee Members Digital Resources & Textbooks CCISD is seeking parents and community members to serve on Subject Area Subcommittees (SAS) that will help select textbooks and digital resources for the following subjects: • K-12 Social Studies• 9-12 Math• K-12 Music• K-12 Fine Arts

Any parent or community member who resides within the CCISD attendance zone is eligible to serve. The committees will be reviewing resources and materials to support the curriculum and will be making a recommendation for purchase to the Board of Trustees.

Interested parents and community members need to apply by October 1, 2014. A drawing will be held on October 2 to determine SAS members. Applications can be found at www.ccisd.net/textbookcommittee and can be submitted online or mailed to the CCISD Education Support Center, 2425 E. Main Street, League City, TX 77573, Attention: Curriculum & Instruction Executive Director.

and CTE spaces have been reviewed and approved by District staff for Clear Creek High School. At Seabrook Intermediate portable buildings were installed to accommodate the need for additional classrooms during construction.

The bond is also funding maintenance priority repair and replacement projects at almost every campus in CCISD. Over the summer eight elementary campuses underwent major repairs that included installing new HVAC equipment, installing new carpet, replacing and/or repairing roofs as well as the installation of new Stage Curtains and Cafeteria/Gym Sound Systems.

Every month, the District’s Director of Facility Services, Paul Miller, provides monthly construction updates to the CCISD Board of Trustees These bond project updates can also be found on the District’s website, www.ccisd.net .

Homecoming is Coming!Get ready for the Homecomimg Parade! We want it bigger and better than ever!! The theme is “Under the Stars.” The Homecoming Parade is on Wednesday, October 1st at 6 pm followed by a community pep rally with a DJ, the Cheerleading booster club selling hamburgers, and we are BRINGING BACK THE BONFIRE!! All events will be finished by 9 pm. The Homecoming Game is Friday, Oct 3rd, with Homecoming Court being announced at 6 pm at Veteran's Memorial Stadium. The game against Clear Springs starts at 7 pm. The Homecoming Dance is Saturday, Oct 4th, 7:30-11:00 pm at the Krueger Fieldhouse, Homecoming Traditions at CLHSEach year a parade, pep rally, football game and dance are held to commemorate Homecoming. Various clubs make floats and a parade is held on Falcon Pass Drive. The football game will be at Veteran's Memorial Stadium at 7:00 pm Friday, October 3. Student “dress-up” days that correlate with the dance theme are sometimes held during Homecoming week. In the tradition of school spirit, girls wear mums and boys wear garters. Typically mums are made in school colors, with white and silver reserved for seniors. Even if you don't have an official date for Homecoming, you can certainly still wear one of these. If your son or daughter has a date, they will exchange mums and garters in the early part of Homecoming Week. Then they wear them to school and to the football game. Sometimes moms make them, sometimes students make them, others order from the local florist. The Homecoming Dance is considered a semi-formal event - most girls wear "after-five" style dresses and boys usually wear either a suit or dress slacks with shirt & tie combination. Most groups will meet at someone's home for pictures and then go get something to eat before going to the dance. It is not necessary to have a date - many just go as a group. Look for more information regarding the dance, tickets sale, prices and dress-up day themes as the weeks unfold!

Falcon Pass ElementarySchool NewsGO VOYAGERS!

While we await the first REAL cool front of the year, there’s a lot happening at Falcon Pass!

Our October PTA meeting will be held at 12:15 pm on Tuesday, October 21st in the teaching theater. Lunch will be served at Noon. After a brief business meeting, FPE school nurse Marilyn Swartz will present “Don’t Bug Me: Small Talk About Keeping Your Kids Healthy”.

October 8th is National Bike or Walk to School Day. In an effort to encourage physical fitness, FPE students are encouraged to walk or ride their bike to school with an adult on October 8th. For more information, please contact FPE PTA PE Liaison Chair Rhonda Klak [email protected].

Dust off your poodle skirt, grab your loafers (and the kids) and join the FPE PTA for their annual Sock Hop! This back-to-school social is FREE to all FPE students and their families. The Sock Hop will be held on October 16th from 6-8pm in the gym. For more information, please contact FPE PTA Sock HOP Chair Samatha Duff at [email protected].

Love Yourself. Be Drug Free! Did you know…children of parents who talk to their kids regularly about drugs are 42% less likely to use drugs than those who don't, yet only a quarter of teens report having these conversations? October 27-31st FPE will celebrate Red Ribbon Week, a nationally recognized antidrug and alcohol campaign. For more information, please contact FPE PTA Red Ribbon Week Chair Isabel Swanson at [email protected].

October 31st is fun run day! Kids will be running for fitness and pledges to support Falcon Pass PTA’s special projects fund. Falcon Pass students benefit from these funds in a myriad of ways… a full year of Writers in the Schools program for this year’s 2nd graders, leveled readers for our literacy lab, educational materials and equipment for classrooms, and new play equipment for recess and the gym. See any FPE student to make a pledge.

Thanks to all who are already backing the future with your membership in the Falcon Pass PTA. If you aren’t already a member, go to www.joinpta.org today!

Lucas Barber, a 5th Grader at Falcon Pass, was selected to kick a field goal at the Clear Lake Falcons game for a $100 donation to the Falcon Pass PE Department.
