SAINT 400 1617 JOSAPHAT 2017 Basilian Fathers Otciv Vasyli]n Mary, the Mother of God 'We fly to your patronage, O Virgin Mother of God. Do not despise our petitions in our necessities; but deliver us from all danger, O Pure and Most Blessed One.' 'Hail, Mother of God Virgin Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you…for you gave birth to Christ, the Savior and Deliverer of our souls. 'Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners… Mary's title the 'Mother of God' is given. In the early, Church, it was a point of great contention. While the Church had been calling Mary the Mother of God from the beginning, Nestorius, archbishop of Constantinople (428-431), argued that we should call Mary 'Mother of Christ' and not 'Mother of God.' He said to call Mary Mother of God implies that Mary is the origin of God. Since God has no origin and is the origin of all things, Nestorius argued it is wrong to say that God had a mother. A great controversy arose, but the issue was solved at the Council of Ephesus in 431when the Church declared once and for all that Mary is indeed the Mother of God. The Church defends this title of Mary as the Mother of God because the very nature of who Jesus is what is at stake. To say that Mary was only the mother of Jesus' humanity but not his divinity introduces a separation between the divine and human natures in Jesus. But the Church affirms that Jesus is fully God and Мolytva Нa Vervyci Радісні Таїнства (понеділок і вівторок) 1. Mary, the Mother of God

'We fly to your patronage, O Virgin Mother of

God. Do not despise our petitions in our

necessities; but deliver us from all danger,

O Pure and Most Blessed One.'

'Hail, Mother of God Virgin Mary, full of

grace, the Lord is with you…for you gave

birth to Christ, the Savior and Deliverer of

our souls. 'Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray

for us sinners…

Mary's title the 'Mother of God' is given. In

the early, Church, it was a point of great

contention. While the Church had been calling

Mary the Mother of God from the beginning,

Nestorius, archbishop of Constantinople

(428-431), argued that we should call Mary

'Mother of Christ' and not 'Mother of God.' He

said to call Mary Mother of God implies that

Mary is the origin of God. Since God has no

origin and is the origin of all things, Nestorius

argued it is wrong to say that God had a mother.

A great controversy arose, but the issue was solved at the

Council of Ephesus in 431when the Church declared once

and for all that Mary is indeed the Mother of God.

The Church defends this title of Mary as the Mother of

God because the very nature of who Jesus is what is at

stake. To say that Mary was only the mother of Jesus'

humanity but not his divinity introduces a separation

between the divine and human natures in Jesus. But the

Church affirms that Jesus is fully God and

fully man, inseparably united in one Person. Therefore,

Mary as the Mother of Jesus is really and truly the Mother

of God.

This truth communicates to us a beautiful lesson about

God. Through it we understand when God united Himself

to our human nature in Jesus Christ; He did not keep His

Godhead aloof or separate from our humanity. Instead, in

the Incarnation, God gave Himself over entirely, binding

Himself inseparably and irrevocably with our human nature

to undergo all of the risk, vulnerability and suffering that

unity with our humanity would entail. It is very good to

know this truth about God. It is a truth we profess every

time we say 'Mary, Mother of God.' Let us strive then, not

to just reflect on how God gives Himself so completely and

with such abandon to us. Let us also seek to reciprocate

that self giving, sacrificial love by trusting and surrendering

ourselves even more completely to God. Let us ask Mary

the Mother of God to pray for us.

'Through the prayers of the Mother of God,

O Savior, save us.'

'Deliver us from peril, O Mother of Christ our God.

You are the one who gave birth to the Creator of

all. Now we all cry to you: Rejoice, only mediatrix

of our souls.'

"Only the Holy Spirit can prompt your heart to say 'Father'

Only the Holy Spirit opens your heart to Love" Pope Francis

"O Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of Truth, everywhere present and filling all things. Treasury of blessings and Giver-of-Life:

come and abide in us, cleanse us of every impurity, and save our souls, O Good One."

This prayer to the Holy Spirit opens our liturgical services because we believe that it is only through the Holy Spirit that our life as Christians is effective for our healing and sanctification. It is the Holy Spirit who guides us, who encourages us, and who fills us with the life-giving grace of God the Son and the love of God the Father. It is for this reason that during the Divine Liturgy, we pray that we may be partakers in the communion of the Holy Spirit. Come and take part in a new Faith Formation video series on discovering a deeper relationship with the Holy Spirit. Fr. Dave Pivonka, TOR, will take us on a pilgrimage to discover and experience a life -giving relationship with the Holy Spirit. This is a relationship that will take us on the greatest adventure imaginable: a journey to the very heart of God. Come Holy Spirit!

Join us weekly starting Tuesday, October 3rd from 7:30pm to 9:00pm in our parish classroom.

Please bring you bible for these sessions.

There is no cost. Sponsored by our St Josaphat Council of the K of C. We especially ask for the men of the parish to come!
