століття, зоріє кожному крізь віки сьогодні.
Не знайдемо такої людини, котра б не чула
про святого. Він є близьким і дітям, і
дорослим. Щороку цикл зимових свят
розпочинається із вшанування цього
подвижника. По всьому світі малеча разом
зі своїми батьками з нетерпінням очікують приходу
цього святого, котрий упродовж цієї «чарівної ночі»
відвідує дітвору.
Мабуть, ніхто не заперечить, що найкращим
спогадом дитинства є свято Миколая, коли вранці, під
своїми подушками, ми знаходили подарунки. Дехто
навіть писав листи до святого, в яких просив здоров’я,
ласки, Божої опіки для своїх рідних і близьких, чи
просто хотів отримати подарунки. Шкода, що
виростаючи, ми забуваємо, що Миколай є й надалі
нашим заступником і опікуном перед Богом. Тому
завжди через його посередництво можемо звертатися до
Творця і будемо вислухані.
У наш час є чимало різних оповідань, легенд,
віршів, кінофільмів, які дуже багато розповідають про
життя святого і його милосердя. Проте знайдеться
небагато таких, котрі б об’єктивно змальовували його
життя: що він робив і для чого себе посвятив. Чимало
фільмів образ Миколая подають неправдиво, чи
спотворено, називаючи його то
Nicholas the Wonderworker
St. Nicholas’ title ‘Wonderworker’ comes
from the multitude of reports of miracles that
occurred due to his intercession, during his life
and after. As he had secretly delivered gold
to the destitute father of 3 daughters, he
miraculously delivered gold to an Italian
merchant ship filled with grain to sail and
deliver the grain to the famine stricken city of
Myra, thus saving the city from starvation.
Another miracle was that of Nicholas’ conversion of the
local governor who had been bribed to condemn 3 innocent
men to death. The saint approached the executioner just as
he was about to raise his sword and behead the innocent
men, Nicholas stopped him and removed it from his hand.
He then approached the governor and denounced this unjust
action. The governor, converted by St. Nicholas’ words,
repented and asked forgiveness. He continues to intercede
for us to this day.
During the 1920s in the Podil section of Kyiv, there
lived a widow with her son and daughter. The widow had a
great devotion to St. Nicholas, and would pray before his
icon always receiving consolation and ease during
misfortune. Her son became an officer. Kyiv changed
hands during the constant fighting between the Red Army,
White Army, Ukrainian, Germans and Poles. The Red
Communists arrested all former officers on the spot, her son
among them. His sister rushed from one office to the other
getting nowhere, while his mother prayed to St. Nicholas
convinced that the saint would intervene.

Санта-Клаусом (Америка, Європа), то Дідом Морозом
(Росія). Ці назви не мають нічого спільного з ним, бо
були вигадані як продукт заміни в епоху відступництва
чи атеїзму. Отже, спробуймо з’ясувати, звідки ж взявся
Дід Мороз і Санта-Клаус та у чому їх подібність зі
святим Миколаєм. Дід Мороз – це радянський
персонаж. Його вигадали наприкінці 1930-х років як
альтернативу святому Миколаєві, бо такі поняття, як
«святий» та «чудотворець» в умовах розвитку
атеїстичної держави стали неадекватними. Та й важко
було вигадати якусь кращу заміну для святкування
тисячолітньої традиції, тому цей образ і «усучаснили»,
позбавивши його всякого натяку на релігійність. Отож,
приходить Дід Мороз не у Різдво, а в Новорічну ніч, у
супроводі чарівної онуки Снігуроньки і дарує дітям
своєрідне шоу, а подарунки складають під ялинку.
Милосердя Церкви є виявом «спільноти любови»,
до якої належить святий Миколай, котрий своїм життям
вчить любови до Бога, ближнього та є нашим
покровителем перед Богом.
Зачаття Пресвятої Богородиці св. Анною
"Празнує днесь вселенна зачаття Анни,
що сталося від Бога"
Давній і глибокий культ Пресвятої Богородиці, що є
знаменною віхою Східної Церкви, виявляється у
великій кількості Богородичних празників у нашому
церковному календарі. Ті празники розказують нам
найважливіші моменти з життя Божої Матері від її
чудесного зачаття аж до її славного успення.
Святе Євангеліє не багато говорить про життя
Пречистої Діви Марії, тож нічого дивного, що
більшість Богородичних празників не основується на
подіях святого Євангелія, а радше на християнській
традиції та на оповіданнях апокрифічних книг перших
віків. Сюди належить також і празник Зачаття, який
наша Церква святкує 9 грудня. Цей празник має
окрему історію на Сході та на Заході. Тож погляньмо на
його історію у Східній, Західній і нашій Церквах.
Празник Зачаття у давнину мав різні назви. До
найдавніших належить "Благовіщення Зачаття Святої
Богородиці".
Головна тема богослуження празника — чудесна
подія, коли свята Анна зачала Пресвяту Богородицю.
Тут описані журба й поневіряння Йоакима й Анни
через їхню бездітність. Згадується їхня гаряча молитва
про дитинку.
З дивного зачаття Пресвятої Богородиці радіють її
батьки, радіють пророки, радіють небо й земля.
У зачатті Богородиці святою Анною прославляється
святість і непорочність Пречистої Діви Марії. Сьогодні
празнуємо її непорочне зачаття, а через дев'ять місяців,
8 вересня, вона з'явиться між нами у своєму славному
Різдві.
Латинська Церква святкує цей празник 8 грудня.
The next day the son returned home, beaten, hungry and
weary. According to him, the officers were being led to
a hippodrome near the Monastery of the Caves to be
executed. On the way o the hippodrome a little old man
approached the officer in charge of the executions and
asked him; “What are you doing?” The commandant
replied that they are going to be shot, and said; “Go away
old man.” The old man left, but in doing so took the
woman’s son by the hand and said; “Let him go, I know
him.” The commandant and guards did not stop him. He
led the boy around the corner and said; “Go home to your
mother.” The mother overjoyed took her son to the church
to thank St. Nicholas. As she led him to the icon of St.
Nicholas, the boy turned ashen, trembled and whispered to
his mother. “Mother dear, that’s the old man who led me to
freedom.” God is wondrous in His Saints.
Immaculate Conception
Didn’t Mary need a Savior,
haven’t we all sinned and fallen
short of God’s grace?
“We pronounce and define that the
doctrine which states that the Most
Blessed Virgin Mary was in the first
instant of her conception, by the singular grace and
privilege of God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the
savior of the human race, preserved immune from all stain
of original sin.” (Pope Pius IX, 1854) “Christ, as the
Church teaches, conquered the enemy of the human race
alone. In the same way, He alone acquired the grace of
Redemption for the whole human race, including
Mary...” (Dr. Ludwig Ott)
We Catholics believe that every human being after the
fall, including Mary was subject to being brought into this
world with original sin and needs to be saved, however
Mary was saved from all sin including original from the
first moment of her conception. Analogy- Suppose one is
skydiving and parachutes towards quicksand. Then a
sudden gust of wind comes along and blows us away from
the quicksand. We could say that at the moment of our
conception we fell into the quicksand called Original Sin.
But in Mary’s case, God protected her from this at the
moment of her conception by the merits of Jesus. She had
no merit or power of her own that kept her from falling
into the quicksand of Original Sin.
It was Divine Mercy that was preparing a place for the
Incarnation. God was preparing the Ark of the Covenant,
the Tabernacle to carry the Word of God. St. Theresa of
Avila said; “I could have fallen like Mary Magdalene, but
your forgiveness of me was greater than hers because you
prevented me from falling.” Mary was redeemed from the
moment of her conception so that she never fell into sin.
Mary was redeemed by God, but in a preventative way.
“To the one who is able to keep you from stumbling and
to present you unblemished and exultant in his glory, to the

only God, our savior through Jesus Christ our Lord be
glory, majesty, power, and authority from ages past, now,
and for ages to come. Amen.” (The Letter of Jude 24-25)
“Many Saints appeared before you (Mary) but none was
full of grace as you…no has been purified in advance as
you have been…you surpass all that is excellent in
man.” (St. Sophronius of Jerusalem-4th century)

Catholic Churches - Introduction to Spirituality and
Worship” on November 22nd, Tuesday, at 7pm.
Come and join us for a new program on our Eastern
Catholic Church and Liturgy interweaved with inspiring
videos and music led by our Fr. Walter Rybicky where you
will get to know our Ukrainian Catholic Church in a deeper
way.
All sessions start at 7pm, Tuesdays, at St. Josaphat’s
Classroom. Light refreshments and all materials are
provided at no charge, although free-will donations are
welcomed! We welcome new and returning participants,
remember to invite your friends and neighbors!

Історія Чину (прод.)
1939 р. з приходом радянської влади до Галичини,
приніс нове випробування віри. У Дрогобичі органи
НКВД закатовали ієром. Якима Сенківського, ЧСВВ
та Северіяна Бараника, ЧСВВ. Вони були першими
жертвами. Починаючи з 1945 р. до 1950 р.,
комуністична влада зліквідувала усі монастирі
в європейських Провінціях, а ченців ув’язнила або
заслала до Сибіру чи тюрми, ще інших було закатовано
чи розігнано. Тільки на Сибір було заслано більше 70-
ти ієромонахів. Ченці, однак, не припиняли своєї
активної праці, адже нелегально продовжували своє
чернече життя і діяльність, як тільки цьому дозволяв
час і обставини. Хоча й мусіли працювати на різних
роботах та бути під пильним оком служб безпеки, проте
провадили підпільний новіціят, обслуговували сестер
монахинь та численних вірних, яким уділяли Святі
Тайни. Ченці заокеанських Провінцій у цей час могли
плідно працювати й розвиватись, особливо
Бразилійська Провінція, яка зросла до 126 ченців
у 1989 р., з яких 57 ієром. Провінція Найсвятішого
Спасителя в Україні у 1989 р. налічувала всього
91 ченця, з яких 50 ієром.
1990 р. приніс бажану свободу, відродження
релігійного життя. На Україні почався процес
повернення й відновлення монастирів, які за 45 р. були
поважно знищені й майже всі перетворені на лікарні,
а в кращому випадку на інтернати.
Упродовж півтора десятиліття вдалося відновити
основні монастирі та заснувати нові: у Барі,
у Покотилівці коло Харкова, у Луцьку, Володимирі-
Волинському, у Києві, у Брюховичах, де з 2002 діє
Василіянський Інститут, у Вільнюсі (Литва).
Чисельність Василіянського Чину на 2001 р.
у 9 Провінціях складала 616 ченців (без кандидатів):
Аргентина (12), Бразилія (125), Канада (44), Чехія (16),
Угорщина (10), Польща (24), Румунія (40), Словаччина
(15), Україна (300), США (30). Ієромонахів 289,
студентів 206, братів 121.
У Східніх Католицьких Церквах існує ще кілька
Чинів, які походять з традиції св. Василія Великого.
Це Василіяни з Ґроттаферати біля Рима в Італії (італо-
греки); Василіяни Найсвятішого Спасителя, Василіяни
св. Івана Христителя, Василіяни Аліпіньці (ці три
належать до Мелхітської Церкви). Існує також
Згромадження св. Василія латинського обряду.

OF THE CELEBRATION OF THE 400TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BASILIAN ORDER OF ST. JOSAPHAT,
BY TAKING PART IN PRAYERS WITH BASILIAN RELIGIOUS.
The Apostolic Penitentiary, by the authority received from Pope Francis, issued a decree proclaiming a year of jubilee on the
400th anniversary of the Basilian Order of St. Josaphat on October 20, 2016, which stated that during this Jubilee the Basilian
religious and faithful who will participate with them in the celebrations can obtain the plenary indugence.
The Decree of the Apostolic Penitentiary defines the duration of the Jubilee Year: Nov. 12, 2016 – Nov. 25, 2017.
To obtain the plenary indulgence from temporal punishments for sins for oneself or for one who is deceased, it is necessary to
fulfill the usual conditions:
- be in the state of sanctifying grace (the forgiveness of sins is required through the Sacrament of Confession);
- participation in the Divine Liturgy and reception of Holy Communion;
- prayer for the intentions, for which the Holy Father is praying.
The Indugence, during the Jubilee year of the 400th anniversary of OSBM, can be obtained by a Christian:
- who will go on a pilgrimage to visit a church or a chapel, where the Basilian fathers offer the pastoral ministry, an
moved by love will repent sincerely of his/her sins. And in the place of pilgrimage he/she:
- will take a part with piety in Holy Liturgical prayers and ceremonies or pious prayers for the greater
glory of St. Basil and of St. Josaphat, officially designated;
- or, at least within a reasonable period of time (half hour) will pray humbly to God for following intentions:
- for faithfulness to the Christian vocation;
- for priestly and religious vocations;
- for protection of the institution of the human family;
- and, finally, one will pray the Lord’s prayer “Our Father,” the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed “I believe in one God,”
and prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saints Basil and Josaphat (example as given below or other prayers).
In the case where a religious of the Order or someone else from devout Christians will have obstacles to participate in the
above described on account of an illness or another good reason, will be able to obtain the plenary indulgence by doing the
following:
- will have a resolution of renunciation of every sin and will have the intention to implement, as soon as it be pos-
sible, the three usual conditions (mentioned above);
- with the sincere desire will attend a church spiritually;
- will pray the mentioned prayers;
- will dedicate with full confidence the sufferings or inconveniences of one’s own life to God's mercy.
To assure easier access to God's forgiveness, which is possible thanks to the power of the keys that Christ gave the Church, that
is, the power to forgive and retain sins, the Apostolic Penitentiary insists that the priests of the Basilian Order of St. Josaphat, led
by pastoral charity, generously devote themselves to the celebration of the Sacrament of Repentance in the Jubilee Churches and
Chapels and distributed often Holy Communion to the sick and the suffering.

We flee to your mercy, O Virgin Mother of God.* Despise not our prayers in our necessities,* but you, who alone are pure and
blessed, deliver us from all danger.
