Action asked in Lent The disciplines traditionally practiced during Great Lent, prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are given to call us to action. Prayer is something we do, it can be a struggle, bit is a spiritual and physical action needed in order for us to live and spiritually grow. Fasting is an action as well to prepare for an event-such as Christmas, Easter, to atone for our sins and clear our heart-our inner disposition coupled with acts of charity such as

almsgiving, caring for the sick etc. Giving is an action. We give alms, we give of ourselves in sacrificial love, and we are to be merciful as our heavenly Father is merciful by giving mercy and kindness to others and forgiving as God forgives us. "The season of Lent during this Jubilee Year should be lived more intensely as privileged moment to experience God's mercy. How many pages of Sacred Scripture are appropriate for meditation during the weeks of Lent to help us rediscover the merciful face of the Father! We can repeat the words of the prophet Micah and make them our own; "You, O Lord, are a God who takes away iniquity and pardons sin, who does not hold your anger forever, but are pleased to show mercy. You, Lord, will return to us and have pity on your people. You will trample down our sins and toss them into the depths of the sea."(7; 18-19) The pages of the prophet Isaiah can also be meditated upon correctly during this season of prayer, fasting, and works of charity. "Is this not the fast that I choose: to loosen the bonds of wickedness, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? (CONT. ON PAGE 3)

Великий Піст -це святий час,

який має за ціль відповідно

приготовити нас, щоб гідно

відсвяткувати Великдень. Великий

Піст - це час особистої жертви,

милостині і покути, якими

найкраще і найпевніше можемо

помиритися з Богом і спокутувати

гріхи цілого року.

Неділя Прощення - випливає з недільної Євангелії,

яку читаємо підчас Св. Літургії: "Якщо ви

прощатимете людям їхні провини, то й Отець ваш

Небесний простить вам. А коли ви не будети

прощати людям, то й Отець ваш Небесний не

простить вам провин ваших" (Мт.б,14).

В Господні молитві ми молимося: "І прости нам

наші провини, як і ми прощаємо тим, що

провинились супроти нас" (Мт. 6,12).

Ми є дітьми того самого Бога Отця, нашим

Спасителем є той самий Ісус Христос. З цього

виходить, що ми дійсно є братьми і сестрами. Тому, ми

повинні взаємно любитись.

Ісус Христос звертає особливу увагу на цю взаємну

братню любов, коли каже: "Нову заповіть даю вам,

щоб ви любили один одного! Як я був полюбив вас,

так любіть і ви один одного! З того усі спізнають, що

лежить у самій природі людини. Господь сотворив нас

суспільними істотами, це значить, які живуть разом, бо

вони потребують помочі інших людей, без якої їхнє

життя було б дуже важким, а то й неможливим.

Тому то й Господь установив заповідь любови

ближнього, яка наступає відтразу після тієї

найважливішої заповіді - любови Бога: «Люби Господа

Бога твого всім твоїм серцем, усією твоєю душею і

всією думкою твоєю: це перша, найбільша і

найважніша заповідь. А друга подібна до неї: 'Люби

ближнього твого, як себе самого" (Мт. 22,37).

Тож любімось взаємно й помагаймо собі в потребі,

тобто, виконуймо діла милосердя, бо помагаючи

ближнім, ми робимо це для самого Христа, який

сказав: «Направду кажу вам: усе, що ви зробили

одному з моїх братів найменших – ви мені

зробили» (Мт.25,40-45).

Десять Правил Великого Посту (prodovwenn] z b[letenu 01-31-2016) 3. Храмова молитва

Домашні турботи, дорога в годину пік, галас на роботі -

навіть якщо ми змогли організувати своє життя так, щоб

їсти тільки дозволену їжу, читати молитовне правило

повністю і навіть молитися протягом дня, від усієї цієї

суєти ми страшенно втомлюємося. І тут нам на допомогу

приходить храм. У монастирях і в багатьох парафіяльних храмах у більших містах під час Великого посту богослужіння відбуваються щодня зранку і ввечері. Варто перед або після роботи зайти хоча б на частину служби - це налаштовує на лад, що цілком

Great Lent Is Here. What Will You Do?

Lent can draw different reactions from us. ‘What am I

going to give up now?’, ‘I’ll shed a few pounds that I put on

during Christmas.’, or ‘Fasting isn’t that import ant to me

anyway.’ Regardless of our responses be they positive or

negative, the fact remains that it is up to you-us to decide

what to do. Great Lent developed early in the Church to

prepare ourselves for Pascha-Easter-Christ’s Resurrection.

We take an account of our lives, our sins, and reconcile

ourselves with God, making Lent a sort of spiritual spring

cleaning. We can do that, or do nothing. Put nothing into

Lent, and we won’t get anything out of it. We can’t really

expect a return without an investment.

FASTING - Fasting benefits the soul and body. Fasting

is not just controlling what goes into our mouths, but more

so what comes out of it. Fasting teaches us discipline

and self-denial teaches us self-awareness. Asceticism

enlightens our senses and enables us to see our sins and

shortcomings. Don’t be afraid to fast. It can help us be

aware who we are and with God’s grace and repentance,

what we can be.

ALMSGIVING - While practicing fasting and abstinence,

remember the hungry and the poor. Take the money that

would be spent on meat and dairy products for one day and

donate it to the local food bank. Fasting and almsgiving go

together-fasting is for our sake while almsgiving is for the

sake of others and demonstrates our love of neighbor.

PRAYER - Pray regularly but take more time for prayer

and meditation. Think about what God has done for you

and what you should do in return. Pray that God would

reveal to you how to better serve Him. Pray for the needs

of others; someone who is ill or in need.

REPENTANCE - As we fast we should take an account

of our lives and see where we need to repent. Each of us

has sins we have never conquered, and sins that we have

become comfortable with. Lent is an opportunity for us

to repent of those sins and go to confession. Consider

confession is a positive light-it is always a sign of God’s

mercy and an opportunity to get rid of those secret, hidden,

and even embarrassing sins which constantly bite at our

conscience.

WORSHIP - Participate in the liturgical life of the

Church, not just on Sunday, but attend the Lenten services.

Take part in the Lenten mission and take the opportunity to

go to confession. We are a liturgical, worshipping church,

and the Liturgy is where we express our faith and experi-

ence God. Let us take advantage of our spiritual-liturgical

traditions that teach us the way to love God and others. Let

us enter Great Lent and prepare ourselves for the joy of

Christ’s Resurrection through prayers, fasting, almsgiving,

repentance and worship.

‘The holy Fast has arrived; it denounces sin and defends

repentance. It is the time of temperance. It brings

salvation close to us, and makes us share the life of

angels…’

відрізняється від навколишньої дійсності. Є богослужіння, заради яких не гріх і відпроситися з роботи раніше. Це Великий канон Андрея Критського в перші чотири дні Великого посту, стояння святої Марії Єгипетської ввечері в середу п'ятого тижня посту, акафіст Божій Матері ввечері в п'ятницю, служби Страсного тижня... Хоча б один раз протягом посту добре побувати на Літургії Передосвячених Дарів - між іншим, у деяких храмах її іноді служать вечорами. 4. Покаяння відчини мені двері, Життєдавче! Піст потрібен не Богові, а нам. Великий піст складається з двох частин: Чотиридесятниці й Страсного тижня. Перша - час покаяння, друга - час очищення, підготовки до Пасхи. Недарма Церква двічі за Чотиридесятницю пропонує нам читання канону Андрея Критського. Недарма кожну великопосну суботу на Всеношній ми чуємо спів Покаяння відчини мені двері, Життєдавче. Недарма за три тижні до посту Церква закликає до покаяння: притчею про митаря і фарисея, притчею про блудного сина, нагадуванням про Страшний суд і вигнання Адама з раю. Саме для покаяння нам і потрібен час Чотиридесятниці. Якщо не збираєшся каятися, не варто починати й постити - марна трата здоров'я. 5. Стеж за здоров'ям! До речі, здоров'я. Якщо під час посту виникають проблеми із самопочуттям, ступінь стриманості слід негайно узгодити з духівником. Ні про який самочинний піст за уставом або навіть близько до уставу не можна й говорити, якщо є хвороби шлунка або пов'язані з обміном речовин. У сучасних умовах навіть монастирі в рідкісних випадках дотримуються дуже суворого посту - не засудить Господь і людини, що працює чи не має здоров'я. (Нагадаю, що під час Великого посту в храмах здійснюється Тайна Соборування - помазання спеціально освяченою оливою з молитвою за зцілення хворих). Жодним чином не наблизить до Бога виразка шлунка, а може й суттєво віддалити - вкрай тонкою є межа між щирим прагненням виконувати церковний устав, не шкодуючи життя свого, і гордістю за свою ретельність.

The family of the late Irene Tryciecky would like

to sincerely thank Fr. Mario Dacechen and Fr. Walter Rybicky

for the services and their prayers. A heartfelt thank you to the

ladies of Marijska Druzhyna-Zarvanycia who prayed the rosary,

the St. Josaphat Choir who sang during the funeral. Our sincerest

gratitude to everyone who sent flowers, cards, condolences,

donations and especially for all the prayers.

Panera Bread Fundraiser Well it wasn’t a great success, but Panera did donate $151.55 from our sales. I want to thank those who attended our fundraiser for our church. We tried something new and we will keep on trying different ideas until we reach our goal for the church renovations. A thank you goes out to Pauline Krupa who couldn’t attend, but donated a monetary gift for our cause. The winners of two $25 Panera gifts cards were: Nancy Brown (Olga Seniw’s daughter) and Stephanie Stebens. Again, I want to thank everyone for their continued

support.

SEVEN DEADLY SINS / SEVEN LIVELY VIRTUES The seven deadly sins are patterns of dysfunction that lead us to unhappiness. Bishop Barron explains the pervasiveness of pride, envy, anger, sloth, greed, gluttony, and lust and shows us how to counteract these sinful patterns with through a conscious focus of opposition, which are the “seven lively virtues”. The seven lively virtues offer antidotes to each sin and help set us on the right path to healing and happiness. EUCHARIST — Sacred Meal, Sacrifice, Real Presence Take a deeper look at the “source and summit” of our Faith, the Eucharist. Bishop Barron brings to light the Blessed Sacrament’s reality as a sacred meal, the sacrifice necessary for communion with God, and as the Real Presence of Christ. TRE ORE – The Seven Last Words of Christ

The “Three Hours Agony” or Tre Ore is a liturgical service held on

Good Friday from noon to 3 o’clock to commemorate the Passion of

Christ. Specifically, it refers to the three hours that Jesus hung on the

Cross and includes a series of homilies on the seven last words of

Christ. Father Barron was invited by Cardinal Timothy Dolan to

preside over the Tre Ore service at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New

York, and the content of his presentation is being featured here.

Second: Today you will be with me in Paradise.

Third: Woman, behold your son. Behold your mother.

March 22 – The Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, & Seventh Words

Fifth: I thirst!

Sixth: Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.

Seventh: It is finished.
