Praises of St. Josaphat & St. Basil the Great
"Let us imitate the first Christian assembly, who had all
things in common-life, soul, and love, a common table,
a close brotherhood, an unfeigned love…" "Whenever,
therefore, a group of persons are aiming at the same goal of
salvation, let them adopt the life in common." (St. Basil the Great)
"You threaten me with death, but I tell you, I cannot be
happier than to perish at your hands for the Catholic,
Apostolic faith. Know that I am prepared to die for the
truth." (St. Josaphat)
You are now living among the ranks of the heavenly
powers, O Basil, for you imitated their life with the purity
of your living. When you were in the flesh, you lived on
earth as one without flesh. Therefore, intercede with Christ
our God for us who delight in your God-inspired teachings,
that He may protect us from dangers and the darkness of
ignorance, and that they may enlighten our souls.
From your youth you dedicated yourself entirely to
Christ your Master. You rose above sensual pleasures and
love of the world. You were a very zealous monk and a
haven of the divine spirit. O most sacred Father Josaphat.
You preserved purity of soul and body. In monastic life
you lived like an angel on earth. In obedience and poverty,
in love for God and neighbor, in prayer and all night vigils,
you were a model for all the monks and a mirror of every
virtue. You focused your mind upon heaven in order to see
the ineffable goodness of Christ the King and God. You
loved Him with all your heart and you were strengthened by
his power. You suffered many tribulations and torments.
With boldness pray to Him for our souls.
You destroyed the vanity of the dissenters by your
sanctifying words. You also strengthened the faith of
weakened hearts. You have entered into eternal life, having
suffered for the cause of unity. You were a witness to the
Lord, O hieromartyr Josaphat. Now also pray that He
may grant unity and peace to our churches and great mercy
to our souls.
"St. Basil the Great, your patriarch, begins his Great
Rules with a forceful appeal to the precept of love for God
and neighbor. From this flows all the dynamism of the
subsequent monastic norms and the path itself to holiness.
Love is expressed in a community life inspired by the
model of the first community in Jerusalem, which fully
shared all its possessions and charisms. This principle was
appealed by your fathers, Metropolitan Joseph Velamin
Rutski and St. Josaphat Kunsevych, who renewed the life
of your Order." (St. Pope John Paul II)
"May the memory of this holy Martyr speak of the
communion of saints, the communion of life between all
those who belong to Christ. It is a reality that gives us a
foretaste of eternal life, because an important aspect of
eternal life consists in the joyful confraternity of all the
saints….The desire for communion pushes us to try to
understand each other, to respect one another, and also to
accept and offer fraternal correction…Dear (cont. on pg. 4)

brothers and sisters, the best way to celebrate St. Josaphat is
to love among each other and to love and serve the unity of
the Church….We are supported in this also by the
courageous witness of so many martyrs of recent times,
which constitute a great wealth and a great comfort to
your Church." (Pope Francis)

TIME TO REFLECT ON WHY WE ARE HERE IN THIS WORLD
With the commemoration of St. Philip on November 14th (Gregorian
Calendar) or November 27th (Julian Calendar), we begin the customary
fast or preparation for the Feast of the Nativity of the Birth of Our Lord
and Savior, Jesus Christ. It coincides with the hectic season of pre-
Christmas preparations, shopping for gifts for others, and invitations to
participate in many social festive events. It truly becomes a challenge for
us to withdraw ourselves from our earthly appetites, as we attempt to
facilitate more time for prayer and meditation. When we become over-
whelmed by such preparations, many of us step back and wonder
whether all these things really add to our happiness and our feelings of
contentment. We reflect on why we are here in this world.
Pope Francis, in the Apostolic Exhortation, “Joy of the Gospel”, says that
you and I are “a mission on this earth”, and that is the reason why you
and I are here in this world. We are called to live as missionaries who
feel genuine happiness in seeking the good of others, in desiring their
happiness. It is who we are. The Holy Father calls us to draw nearer to
others and to seek their welfare. In turn, our hearts are opened wide to
the Lord’s greatest and most beautiful gifts. “Whenever our eyes are
opened to acknowledge the other, we grow in the light of faith and
knowledge of God”.
The recent beatification of Saint Teresa of Calcutta reminds us of a life
dedicated “to give until it hurts”. Mother Teresa gave of herself until it
hurt, as she continued to give of her understanding, compassion, care and
devotion. She revealed to us that every person is worthy of our giv-
ing. Pope Francis reminds us that “every human being is the object of
God’s infinite tenderness, and He himself is present in their lives. Every
person is immensely holy and deserves our love”. Why are you here in
this world? Pope Francis tells us so beautifully, that “if I can help at least
one person to have a better life, that already justifies the offering of my
life. We achieve fulfillment when we break down walls and our heart is
filled with faces and names!” Herein lies our challenge during “Pylypivka” or Advent. Be still, calm yourself and hear the voice of Jesus in your life in prayer and medita-tion. Go about your daily life energized with the closeness of the Lord in your heart. Let Jesus be the source of your energy and that which you need for daily life. Choose to draw nearer to others seeking their better-ment in small ways. Open your eyes to be become more aware of others
and their challenges in life. Listen. Observe. Share of yourself in in-creased attentiveness to others. Share from your abundance. Pope Fran-cis observes that “we do not live better when we flee, hide, refuse to share, stop giving and lock ourselves up in our own comforts. Such a life is nothing less than slow suicide”. You will come to know that “it is more blessed to give than to re-ceive” (Acts 20:35). You will be able to “give until it hurts” because it will not hurt. Jesus will not ask more of you than you can handle. You will do it with His joy and peace overtaking you. And, you will have come to understand why you are here in this world as you prepare to celebrate the Feast of the Nativity of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! God bless you in ways only He can as you journey through “Pylypivka” or Advent in anticipation of the birth of Jesus in the cave at Bethlehem. +Stefan Soroka (author) Archbishop of Philadelphia for Ukrainians Metropolitan of Ukrainian Catholics in the United States +Paul Chomnycky, OSBM (Stamford) + Bohdan Danylo (Parma) +John Bura (Philadelphia)
