Saints of Christ’s Church

Holiness is a gift of the Holy Spirit. Through this gift,

as we become Christ-like we become children of our

heavenly Father. The Lord, who alone is holy, grants his own

holiness to humankind and comes to dwell within: “Those

who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love

them, and we will come to them and make our home with

them” (Jn14:23). Christian holiness is the manifestation of

humankind’s divinization. “All you saints who rejoice with

a splendor that surpasses every spirit, the psalmist calls you

gods because you dwell close to God and receive the deifying

rays from his light.”

In Christianity, holiness is connected with witnessing to

the faith, often expressed through martyrdom. The word

martyr (from the Greek, martys, meaning witness) emphasizes

not so much the fact of suffering as testifying to Christ.

“The choirs of saints have shown youthfulness and fortitude

in suffering. They have accepted painful wounds for the sake

of incorruptible crowns of glory and beauty.”

The Church also recognizes as saints the faithful who have

chosen the way of ascetical struggle. They are called venerable

ones for in their ascetical way of life they have obtained

the gift of God’s likeness, having made the journey from the

“image” to the “likeness” of God: “All you venerable ones,

who lived in holiness, you vanquished the demons; and

extinguishing torments of conscience, you valiantly endured

the burning of the passions.”

The Church sings the praises of the struggles of the holy

hierarchs the bishops, who by the ministry of the Word and

the celebration of the Holy Mysteries strengthened and

nurtured the Church of Christ: “Taught by the word of God,

the holy hierarchs became divine mouthpieces.”The struggle

of confessors is the fight for truth and its defense against

various heresies, as well as the courageous profession

of faith in Christ in times of persecution. Yet another

manifestation of holiness recognized by the Church is selfless

social service to the disadvantaged and the infirm. Thus the

Church also venerates unmercenary wonderworkers, selfless

physicians who took no money.

At the head of the choir of saints is the most holy Mother

of God: “More honorable than the cherubim and by far more

glorious than the seraphim.” Together with her the Church

venerates the apostles of Christ, the evangelists and preachers

those who have proclaimed the Gospel. The Church also

venerates the Old Testament righteous ones—the patriarchs

and prophets — as well as the invisible world angels and

archangels. This is because the sanctifying action of the

Holy Spirit embraces the entire history of salvation. (Christ Our Pascha-#316-20)

Святі Христової Церкви Святість – це дар Святого духа, в якому, уподібнюючись до Христа, ми стаємо дітьми небесного отця. Єдиний Святий Господь дарує Свою святість людині, оселяючись у ній «коли хтось Мене любить, то й слово Моє берегтиме, і злюбить його Мій отець, і прийдемо Ми до нього, і в ньому закладемо житло (Йо. 14, 23). Християнська святість є виявом обожествлення людини. «Святі, що насичуєтеся світлом Божественної радості, що понад розумінням, ви стаєте богами наближенням до Бога. У християнстві святість пов’язується зі свідченням віри, часто вираженим через мучеництво. Слово мученик (по-грецьки мартіс, що буквально означає свідок) наголошує не так на самому факті страждань, як на свідченні віри в Христа. «Лики мучеників показали юнацьке і міцне терпіння. Вони прийняли болісні рани заради нетлінної слави і краси. Cерква визнає святими й тих вірних, котрі обрали шлях аскетичного подвигу. їх називають «преподобними», бо у своєму подвижницькому житті вони осягнули дар богоподібності, пройшли шлях від «образу до «подоби Божої «Преподобно поживши, преподобні отці перемогли бісів і, згасивши муки пристрастей, гідно спокусливі розпалення перетерпіли. Cерква оспівує і подвиг «святителів, єпископів, які своїм служінням Слову і звершенням Святих таїнств зміцнювали й розвивали церкву Христову. Святителі, навчені Божим Словом, були божественними устами. Подвиг «ісповідників, це обстоювання і захист істини від різних єресей та відважне сповідування віри в Христа під час переслідувань. Ще одним виявом святості церква вважає безкорисливе суспільне служіння знедоленим і недужим. тому вона вшановує «чудотворців-безсрібників. Oчолює лик святих Пресвята Богородиця – «чесніша від херувимів і незрівнянно славніша від серафимів».

разом із нею церква почитає Христових апостолів, євангелистів і проповідників – благовісників Євангелія. церква почитає старозавітних праведників, патріархів і пророків, а також світ невидимий – ангелів і архангелів, тому що освячуюча дія Святого духа охоплює всю історію спасіння. Всіх святих Святі - це люди, які відповіли любов'ю на

любов, люди, які зрозуміли, що якщо хтось вмирає за них,

то єдина відповідь подяки - це стати такими, щоб смерть

його не була б марною. Взяти на себе хрест означає саме

це: відвернутися від усього, що вбиває і розпинає Христа,

від усього, що оточувало - і оточує! - Христа ненавистю і

нерозумінням. І нам це зробити легше, ніж тим, які жили в

Його час, тому що в ті дні вони могли в Ньому

помилитися, але в наші дні, дві тисячі років по тому, коли

ми читаємо Євангеліє і стає перед нами в цьому

оповіданні вся міра росту Христового та Його особистість,

коли у нас є мільйони свідків, які говорять нам, що Він

справді віддав Своє життя за нас, і що єдине, чим ми

можемо відгукнутися, це віддати життя один за одного

заради Нього - як можна нам не відгукнутися?!
