Annunciation of the Most Holy Mother of God

The Church celebrates the feast of the Annunciation of the most Holy Mother of God. After the Lord cursed man for the sin of disobedience, many centuries passed. And on that day the Good News was heard, the news that the promise given by God to the foremother Eve was being fulfilled: “You shall strike his heel.” (Genesis 3:15). The Archangel Gabriel announced to the Immaculate Virgin: “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you...” The Archangel announced to the Virgin, that she had been chosen for the birth of the Savior of the world. Although the Righteous Joseph was her betrothed, the Immaculate Virgin had made a vow to preserve her virginity for God's sake, and therefore answered the Archangel incredulously: “How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?” And the Archangel communicated the heavenly mystery to her: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.” The Virgin's own consent was needed for this election, and she replied: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.”

Who is not touched, who does not delight in the election of this modest and meek Maiden to such exalted service? Many centuries have come and gone, there were many modest and meek maidens, but no one was worthy to perform this but Mary of Nazareth. Doesn't every one of us want to merit God's grace, not so exalted perhaps, more modest, but all the same to be chosen for God's service?

If an angel declared that we had been elected, would we refuse? By the way, it is not an angel, but the Lord Himself who calls us to, “Rejoice, you have been chosen for salvation.” How must we respond to this election? We must answer like the Mother of God, Behold the handmaid/servant of the Lord; “May it be it done to me according to your word.”

But perhaps someone will say, “Yes”, but for the Mother of God this election imparted God's grace to her and the joy of contact with God; while for us this is connected with tremendous spiritual efforts, it obliges us to take up our cross and follow the Lord. This requires much exertion along a narrow and sorrowful path. This is especially true in our day, when there are so many wide paths leading to destruction.

But for the Mother of God as well her election was a cross to bear. Just think what it cost her to watch her Son be crucified! Her pain, as a mother, was the same as if she had been crucified herself. Therefore, we will not be shaken when we hear the Lord's call. Just like the Pure Virgin, we will answer humbly in the affirmative, for only with our participation can our salvation be achieved.

Fish Tales………

Kudos to our “Food Prep” volunteers. It takes a village for sure. Food is prepped Monday thru Friday. Preparing onions, tartar sauce, coleslaw, cocktail sauce, cutting and breading fish, and filling portion size cups — all needed for serving nearly 800 dinners in four hours every Friday! Your help is very much needed and appreciated. Every week between 200 and 250 pounds of potatoes are peeled, cut, boiled and prepared for the miles of dough needed for making pyrohy/varenyky. Thank you to our food prep army! They “love their job”. Without them we could not have success with this endeavor. More news to come from the……. Fish Fry Team The Fish Fry has been cancelled!

SPIRITUAL COMMUNION During the recent pandemic of the coronavirus, many churches and houses of worship have been closed. Our Ukrainian Catholic Hierarchy has encouraged us to remain open and celebrate the Divine Liturgy, but do so according to the government guides of proper cleanliness. The icons are not to be kissed, but one may bow-incline to them. The holy water stoups have been removed, and the sick and elderly are encouraged staying home.

If you are unable to attend the Divine Liturgy, or do attend and are not going to receive Holy Communion, you can still reach out to Our Lord by making an Act of Spiritual Communion! St. Thomas Aquinas defined a Spiritual Communion as “an ardent desire to receive Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament in Communion at the Divine Liturgy, & in lovingly embracing Him as if we had actually received Him.” No matter what the times we are living in, turn to the Lord Jesus and ask him for His help & guidance in prayers.

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there, and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. St. Alphonsus Liguori

‘Welcome Christ into your heart. Embrace Him, and do not let Him leave you.’-Blessed Henry Heath OFM

You can make a Spiritual Communion as whenever and wherever you'd like, using the prayer given above, others like it, or your own heartfelt thoughts. You can make a Spiritual Communion before our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, or anywhere else where the Spirit moves you. Remember, however, that you can “turn toward the holy tabernacle” and receive Jesus in your heart from anywhere you might happen to be, at any time, day or night! You just need to approach Him with sincerity, humility and a desire to follow in His footsteps in acts of faith and charity. And He’s delighted when we do so! Spiritual Communion is an act of devotion, & one very pleasing to God.

St. Jean-Marie Vianney, a French priest famous for converting countless souls to Christ in his parish of Ars in the 19th century, once said “when we feel the love of God growing cold, let us instantly make a Spiritual Communion. When we cannot go to the church, let us turn towards the tabernacle; no wall can shut us out from the good God.” We can indeed be grateful for that!
