The Naming of Our Lord Jesus Christ

- St. Basil the Great,

Theophany The Naming of Our Lord Jesus Christ

On the 8th day after His birth, Jesus was circumcised

and named according to the precepts of the Jewish law

prescribed in Genesis 12; 10, and Leviticus 12; 3 as a sign

of God's covenant with Abraham. After this ritual, he is

given the name 'Yeshua-Jesus'-He who rescues-delivers

-Yahweh saves.'. In Scripture, the name also indicates a

function. Jesus is the Savior of the world. The Lord

underwent this ritual to fulfill the precepts of the Jewish

law, and that He truly assumed human flesh.

The ritual of circumcision would give way to Baptism

which it prefigured (Colossians 2; 11-12). When we are

baptized and are part of the New Covenant-the Church. At

baptism we are given a name to remind us that we have

entered the New Covenant with God. The name 'Christian'

is a sign of mankind's entrance into a New Covenant with

God.

St. Basil the Great 329-379

St. Basil was born in 329 in Cappadocia in Asia Minor

(modern Turkey) to virtuous, wealthy parents, St. Basil the

Elder and St. Emelia. Basil visited various monasteries in

Egypt, Palestine, and Syria to learn about the monastic life.

Basil sold his possessions and divided the proceeds among

the poor and with a small group of friends he established a

monastic community not far from his family's estate at

Anesi in the province of Pontus. They lived and prayed

together as a community. He established the Long Rules

and Short Rules, of monastic life based on the Evangelical

Counsels. He established many monastic communities and

used his inheritance to help the poor and established

hospitals called 'Basiliades'. Basil's idea of monasticism

would become a school of Christian perfection and would

later be adopted by St. Benedict in the West.

Basil would be ordained priest, and in 370 he was

consecrated bishop of Caesaria in Cappadocia, directing his

work to unity of the Church, fighting the Arian heresy

which denied the divinity of Christ, and strengthening the

Christian spirit in the faithful. He achieved this by

composing a treatise on the divinity of the Holy Spirit,

introduced strict discipline among his clergy, organized

charitable institutions and revived liturgical worship. He

died on January 1, 379, and his imprint on the Church

remains to this day. Justly, he was named 'the Great'.

The Holy Theophany of Our Lord God and Savior Jesus

Christ

'The earth, O Word of God, has been made holy by

Your holy birth; the heavens with the stars proclaimed Your

glory. Now water's nature is blessed by Your bodily

baptism and earthborn's race has returned again to its

former higher estate.'

"God is light and in Him there is no darkness at all." (1

John 1; 5) The feast of the Theophany-the revelation of

God-is sometimes called the 'Feast of Lights', and is

connected with the Nativity. Jesus Christ, the Son of God is

Happy Birthday

Mnoha] Lita!

Names printed are for birthdays for this week — from Sunday thru Saturday

the Light of the world and the 'Sun of Righteousness' is God

made flesh, revealed to the world. The Theophany is the

baptism of Jesus and the revelation of the Trinity. 'He who

covers Himself with light as a garment…today is covered

by the streams of the Jordan.' Jesus had no need for clean-

sing, but He does so in order to regenerate us. One of the

ancient names for baptism was 'Photismos', or

'Enlightenment'. Jesus Christ is the Light and brought us

the light of the knowledge of God, through the sacramental

mystery of Baptism which washes away our sins and makes

us members of the Church.

In our Ukrainian Christian tradition, the waters are

solemnly blessed in a solemn elaborate ceremony after the

Divine Liturgy, either in the church or on the bank of a lake

or river. The faithful bring the blessed water home, bless

their homes and farms and livestock with it, and later ask

the priest to come and bless the home. The faithful partake

of during the Schedrij Vechir-Abundant-Generous

Eve-Supper. The blessing of the waters liturgically and

ritually celebrate Jesus' Baptism, and reminds us of our

baptism. Also we are reminded of the baptism or

Rus'-Ukraine by Grand Prince Volodymyr the Great. The

River Dnipro in which the people of Kyiv were baptized

became the 'Ukrainian Jordan'.
