St. Josaphat-Patron Saint of Church Unity

‘We extol you, O Josaphat, great martyr of Christ, and we

venerate your martyrdom which you bore for the reunion of

the Church.’

St. Josaphat Kuntsevich was born in Volodymyr

Volynsky in 1580. His parents named him John. When he

was a child, accompanying his mother to church, he was

mesmerized by the icon of the Crucifixion. His mother

tried to explain to him the meaning of the icon, when

suddenly a spark from Our Lord’s side entered John’s heart

with a burning love for God and neighbor. He loved and

learned the church services and yearned for the monastic

life.

In 1596, the hierarchs of the Kyivan Church, which

consisted of Ruthenians-Ukrainians and Byeloruthenians

-Byelorussians convoked a synod in Brest to unite the

Kyivan Church with the Apostolic See of Rome. The

supremacy of the Pope would be recognized, while the

Byzantine-Eastern discipline would remain. John worked

for a cloth merchant in Vilnius, Lithuania, joined the ranks

of the united Kyivan Church, and at the age of 24, he

entered the monastery of the Holy Trinity. He was tonsured

and given the name Josaphat. Monastic life had grown lax,

but that did not discourage Josaphat. He, and later his good

friend Veniamin Rutsky reformed the Holy Trinity

monastery and later others. In 1617 the Order of St. Basil

the Great of the Holy Trinity was formed. Not only

monastic life was renewed, but the Union would be

strengthened among the people.

In 1609, Josaphat was ordained a priest and would be

renowned for his charity, preaching and converting

people to the Catholic Church. He reverted to the liturgical

texts of the services used by the Orthodox to demonstrate

the truth of the Catholic Church and recognition of the

Pope. He would be called the ‘soul snatcher’. He was

charitable and never hostile towards anyone. In 1617,

Josaphat was consecrated bishop and in 1618 he became

archbishop of Polotsk, Byelarus. He reformed and

compiled a catechism the clergy, and set to the task of

ratifying the Union among his faithful, winning over a large

number of them.

The Union of Brest was misunderstood, seen as a

betrayal to Orthodoxy and means of latinization and

polonization of our people, was not widely accepted,

especially among the Kozaks and nobles. In 1620, under

Kozak protection, an Orthodox hierarchy was consecrated

by Patriarch Theophanes of Jerusalem. There would be 2

Kyivan Churches; one, united with Rome, the other, united

with Constantinople. The nation would be divided; Rus’

was destroying Rus’.

Josaphat would become a marked man slated to die a

martyr’s death, was willing to lay down his life for his

sheep. He often spoke about his willingness to die a martyr

for church unity. On November 12, 1623, in Vitebsk,

despite prior warnings, Josaphat was attacked and killed by

a mob in his residence. His head was struck with an axe,

and he was shot. The crazed mob desecrated his (cont. pg. 4)

chaste body and threw it in the river Dvina. Almost

immediately, the people repented and wept over the murder

they had committed. The city was covered by a heavy fog,

there were no services in the Latin or Greek churches

that day, and the inhabitants were lost until his body was

recovered.

After his martyrdom, many miracles and conversions

were attributed to Josaphat, recalling the words of

Tertullian; “The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the

Church.” Josaphat’s canonization process began in 1628.

Over the centuries, his body was examined and found to be

incorrupt. He was beatified in 1648 and canonized as a

Saint of the Universal Church in 1867. In 1923, Pope Pius

XI declared St. Josaphat the patron saint of unity between

the Catholic and Orthodox churches. As of 1963, his relics

were placed in St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome in the altar

of St. Basil the Great which is underneath one the

arches that support the dome. In the summer of 1982, in

commemoration of the Centenary of the Reform of the

Basilian Order, his relics were examined, cleaned, and

clothed in new episcopal vestments while his hand and head

were encased in a silver glove and mask.

‘Since you have confident access to God, O blessed

priest-martyr Josaphat, intercede in our behalf for those,

who joyfully celebrate your solemn feast and with faith

The Expectation of the Savior — St. Philip’s Fast

Liturgically the Church re-creates the expectation of the

Savior in the history of salvation by means of the Fast that

begins on November 15/28, the day after the feast of the

Apostle Philip. This Fast last until the Nativity of Christ,

and is appropriately called the Nativity Fast, or popularly,

St, Philip’s Fast (in Ukrainian, Pylypivka). During the

course of this Fast, the Church prepares us for the luminous

feast of the Nativity of Christ, reminding us of the

consequences of Adam’s lack of self-control: “Refusing to

fast, the first Adam tastes of the death-bearing tree.”

The reading of the holy Gospel on the feast of the

apostle Philip is full of hope for salvation (see John 1; 43-

51). Philip invites Nathaniel to become better acquainted

with Jesus of Nazareth. However, Nathaniel has one

reservation: “Can anything good come from Nazareth?”

To this Philip replies; “Come and see” (John 1; 45-46).

Having met Christ, Nathaniel’s reservation dissipates.

Herein is the task for every Christian: to “come and see,” in

other words, to draw near to Christ in order to know him.
