Entrance of the Lord into Jerusalem The Floral Triodion begins with Lazarus Saturday. It leads into Holy Week, which bears the good news about Christ’s victory over sin and death through his Passion and the Cross. The sign of the imminent victory is the entrance of Christ, the God-man, into Jerusalem. “As man he wept for Lazarus, and as God he resurrected him from the dead. As man he sat upon the donkey, and as to God they cried out to him: ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.” In the liturgical hymns of Palm Sunday, also known as Flowery Sunday, we sing of the children of Jerusalem, who greeted Christ as King even though the Pharisees and scribes refused to accept Him: “O, evil and adulterous generation, why have you treated your Lord so faithlessly? Why have you rejected the prophet’s words which proclaim him? Your own children sang to your shame today: ‘Hosanna to the son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’ Just as the people greeted Christ with branches from trees, so Christians also greet Christ with “palms of virtue” as he enters upon his voluntary Passion. The liturgical texts of Holy Week present us the example of the repentant woman, who with expensive ointment anointed the feet of the Savior. The repentant harlot receives from him the forgiveness of her sins and moves us towards repentance. “Accept the fountain of my tears, O you who draw down from the clouds the waters of the sea. Incline to the groanings of my heart, O you who in your ineffable self-emptying have bowed down the heavens. I shall kiss your most pure feet and wipe them with the hairs of my head.”Jesus was invited by the Pharisee, but it was the harlot who received the blessing: “O Jesus, life-giving Bread, you have eaten with Simon the Pharisee, that the harlot might gain your grace that is beyond all price, by pouring out the ointment on your head.” The good deed of the harlot enflamed the jealousy of Judas and urged him on to betrayal. “O misery of Judas! He saw the harlot kiss your feet, and deceitfully he plotted to betray you with a kiss. She loosed her hair and he was bound a prisoner by fury ... for envy knows not how to choose its own advantage.”Nevertheless, Jesus does everything for the sake of Judas’ salvation: He washes his feet, and offers him bread during the Mystical Supper. “O ineffable self-abasement! ... O Savior, you who are fire have washed the feet of your betrayer, and washing him, you have not burned him up ... but you have given him Bread at the supper.” (Christ our Pascha-# 221-24)

Лазарева субота, якою починається квітна тріодь,
вводить у Страсний тиждень, який несе благу вість про
перемогу Христа над гріхом і смертю через Його
страждання і хрест. Знаком грядущої перемоги є вхід
Христа – Боголюдини – в Єрусалим. Як людина Він
заплакав, затуживши за Лазарем, – а як Бог воскресив
його з мертвих; як людина Він сів на осля, – а як Бога
Його вітали: “Благословен, Хто йде в ім’я Господнє.”
У стихирах квітної неділі оспівуємо єрусалимських
дітей, які вітають Христа як царя, хоча фарисеї
і книжники його не приймають: "роде лукавий
і перелюбний, що своєму женихові не дотримав
вірності!..ти не прийняв пророків, що Сина звістили.
тож посоромся своїх дітей, які кличуть: осанна Синові
давида, благословенний, Хто йде в ім’я Господнє."
Подібно до того, як люди вітали Христа галузками з
дерев, християни зустрічають вхід Господній на
добровільні страсті "галузками чеснот."
Літургійні тексти Страсного тижня представляють
нам розкаяну жінку, яка дорогоцінним миром
намастила ноги Спасителя. Pозкаяна блудниця,
"збагнувши божество Христа," дістає прощення від
нього і спонукає нас до покаяння: "Прийми струмки
моїх сліз, ти, що хмарами виносиш воду з моря!
Прихились до моїх сердечних зітхань, ти, що прихилив
небеса твоїм невимовним приниженням; хай поцілую
і знову обітру волоссям моєї голови твої пречисті ноги."
Ісуса запросив фарисей, а благословення дістала
блудниця: "Будучи хлібом животворящим, Ісусе, їв ти з
Симоном фарисеєм, щоб блудниця придбала безцінну
благодать твою, виливаючи миро." Dобрий вчинок
блудниці розпалив заздрість Юди і підштовхнув його
до зради. "о Юдо окаянний! Бачивши як блудниця
цілувала ноги, ти підступно продумував поцілунок
зради. Вона розв’язала волосся, а ти зв’язався лютістю;
заздрість бо не вміє вибирати корисного." Ісус усе ж
таки все робить заради спасіння Юди: обмиває йому
ноги, подає хліб в часі тайної Вечері. "о невимовне
самоспустошення! Будучи наче вогонь, ти обмив ноги
зрадникові, Спасе. обмивши, не обпалив. І подав хліб
на вечері." (Xrystos Naqa Pasxa-221-4)

American Red Cross Blood Drive - Sunday, April 28th

Local hospitals are dealing with blood shortages due to the
prolonged cold weather. Please come and donate blood. It will
help and save someone's life.
Our previous blood drive was held at St. Josaphat back in
