Prayer For Ukraine — Molytva za Ukra\nu:

Almighty Father, You said that when two or three are gathered in your name – you would be among them. Remembering Your words and having received the land of Ukraine for our heritage; We ask you today to prove us mindful of this great blessing. Bless our ancestral homeland Ukraine and these United States with honorable works, sound learning, and good manners. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogance. Defend liberty which is an expression of your Divine Will. During this time of difficulty throughout our ancestral homeland Ukraine fill our hearts with gratitude, and grant the people of Ukraine, and all of us the grace to continue to trust in You and Your mercy as we did in previous days of trouble. We ask this for we know that you are a gracious and loving God in whom we are blessed through the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, always now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

The feast of the Transfiguration of our Lord,

God and Savior Jesus Christ The feast of the Transfiguration is celebrated on August 6 to commemorate the transfiguration-metamorphosis of Christ on Mt Tabor when He appeared in His divine glory before the Apostles Peter, James and John. The event of the Transfiguration is recorded in three of the four Gospels: Mt 17; 1-9, Mk 9; 2-8, and Lk 9; 28-36. Jesus took the Apostles Peter, James and John with Him up upon a mountain, and when they were on the mountain, Jesus was transfigured. His face shone like the sun, His garments became glistening white. Moses and Elijah appeared with Christ, talking to Him. Peter declared how good it was for them to be there and expressed the desire to build three booths for Moses, Elijah and Christ. This reference to booths could imply that this occurred during the time of the Feast of Tabernacles when the Jews would be camping out in the fields for the grape harvest; for this Feast had acquired the other associations in the course of its history, including the memory of the wanderings in the wilderness recorded in the Old Testament book of Exodus. While Peter was speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them. A voice came from the cloud saying: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to Him.” When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces filled with awe. Jesus came to them and told them not to be afraid. When the 3 looked up, they only saw Jesus. As Jesus and His disciples came down the mountain, He told them not to speak of what they had seen until He had risen from the dead. In the icon of the Feast, Christ is the central figure, appearing in a dominate position, within a circular mandorla. He is the visual and theological center of the icon. His right hand is raised in blessing, while his left holds a scroll. The mandorla with its brilliant colors of white, gold, and blue, represent divine glory and light. The halo around Christ’s head is inscribed with the Greek words meaning, ‘The One Who is’. Elijah and Moses stand atop separate mountain peaks flanking Christ, left to right. They are bowing to Christ with their right hands raised in a gesture of intercession towards Him. Elijah and Moses represent the Law-Moses received the law from God, and the Prophets-Elijah was a great prophet; they both experienced visions of God-Moses on Mt. Sinai, Elijah on Mt. Carmel; and they represent the living and the dead-Elijah the living, because he was taken up to heaven by a chariot of fire, and Moses the dead, because he did experience death. Below Christ are the 3 Apostles, who by their posture in the icon show their response to the transfiguration of Christ. James has fallen over backwards with his hand over his eyes. John in the center has fallen prostrate. Peter is kneeling and raises his right hand towards Christ in a gesture expressing his desire to build the 3 booths. The garments of the disciples are in a state of disarray as to indicate the dramatic impact the vision had on them. The icon of the Feast directs our attention toward the event of the Transfiguration and specifically to the glory of God as revealed in Christ. The event came at a critical time in Jesus’ ministry, just as He was setting on His journey to Jerusalem. He would soon experience the humiliation, suffering, and death on the Cross. However, the glorious light of the Resurrection was revealed to strengthen His disciples for the trials that they would soon experience. The Feast also points to the great and glorious Second Coming of Our Lord and the fulfillment of the Kingdom of God when all of creation will be transfigured and filled with light.
