Message from the Padre

In our Gospel this weekend, Jesus speaks to His disciples with a dif-

ferent tone of voice. He proclaims the blessedness of the peacemaker, but has

come “not to establish peace on earth,” but “division.”

My dear friends, Jesus’ message today is not all about division but it

is calling for us to make a big decision and a big sacrifice on our part that re-

quires courage, total surrender and a change of heart. It calls for us to have a radical discipleship and total commitment in Christ. But what does it mean to

be totally committed to Jesus Christ and to his mission in this day and age?

My brothers and sisters, to be totally committed to God’s calling is easier

said than done. In order to follow God’s truth, we need some self-sacrifice and self-denial. We need to make

some choices between friends and family, including our priorities in life. Most of the time, our biggest struggle in life is finding a balance between the demands of our family and the demands of our faith...we usually try to re-

spond to both. But there are times when we have to make a quick decision between our commitment to our family

and our commitment to Christ... between the mission of the church and the demands of the world. When con-

fronted with this kind of situation, we must always keep in mind that our choices must be made according to the teaching of the Gospel...that is our commitment to love God above all things and to love our neighbors as our self.

So, this weekend let us listen to our calling and set our priorities by putting Christ first in our lives and

make a decision according to the demands of the Gospel and not according to the demands of the world.

Fr. Joe

Twentieth Sunday in

Ordinary Time Luke 12: 49-53

It is hard to hear what the Good

News is in today’s Gospel. Jesus tells us that he has come

to bring division, rather than peace, to the earth. When we

look at our history or look at the Middle East today, we see that faithful Christians are often persecuted. Jesus

himself was slain. And therein lies our Good News, if we

are willing to hear it. Jesus rose again, and so will all his faithful disciples.

The Assumption of the

Blessed Virgin Mary

On Monday, August 15th, the Church

celebrates the Feast of the Assumption of

the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven. We can "celebrate" the Assumption any time

we pray The Rosary. The Fourth Glorious

Mystery calls us to reflect on Mary's Assumption, and to

pray for the grace of a happy death. One of the greatest gifts Jesus bestowed upon us at the foot of the cross was

His Mother, Mary. So consider praying one decade of the

Rosary this week in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Mother. Know that Mary is always ready to inter-

cede on our behalf.
