CHARLOTTESVILLE A Reflection by Fr. Dwight Longnecker

I‘ll tell you what’s happened in Charlottesville. It is human beings revealing what lies within. It’s real simple and its been happening since Cain killed his brother Abel.

It works like this: 1. Human being is unhappy 2. He doesn’t know why he’s unhappy. 3. Somebody must be at fault. 4. He needs to blame somebody for his being unhappy 5. It can’t be his fault because he’s convinced that he’s a

good person 6. So it must be somebody else’s fault 7. So he gets together with other people who are

unhappy 8. They talk about why they are unhappy and conclude

that it must be somebody else’s fault 9. The other person is to blame, but who is that other

person? 10. It’s the people who are not like them. 11. It’s the people who disagree with them 12. It’s the people of a different religion, a different race or

a different belief. 13. Those people are the problem 14. To get rid of the problem they conclude that they have

to get rid of the people who caused the problem 15. First they try to exclude those people 16. Then they try to persecute those people 17. Then they try to kill those people. 18. If only they can eradicate those other people then they

will be happy 19. Once they did get rid of them they felt so good that it

was like a drug 20. So they will try to get that feeling again like any addict

does.

Where does the whole sequence go so terribly wrong? At stage number five–when the person cannot or will not see that they are responsible for their unhappiness, and even if they are not the ones who caused it they are the ones who can solve it. As soon as we enter the blame game we are headed down the road of destruction.

Charlottesville has revealed to all of us what it means to be an unredeemed human being. Only repentance can solve this problem for repentance is, at its very heart, the simple act of a person taking responsibility for themselves–for their own happiness and by God’s help, the solution to their problems. Then once they take responsibility for themselves they might start taking responsibility for the happiness of others.

All Christians should pray regularly for all people who suffer from infirmities of every kind. But this list is intended for individuals who are acutely ill or facing surgery until they are back on the mend. Names will ordinarily be removed after 3 weeks, but if the illness persists you can call us and we will keep their names on for an additional three weeks.

WHAT DOES ALPHA LOOK LIKE?

JESUS CHRIST IS THE ALPHA AND THE OMEGA, THE BEGINNING AND THE END

A VISION FOR US

We are called to become a truly catholic community in

which all are welcome to become friends

with each other, with Christ, and with the least of

His brothers and sisters; becoming Holy as God is Holy.

FOOD

Whether it’s a group of

friends gathered around a

kitchen table, or a quick

catch-up over coffee and

cake, food has a way of

bringing people together.

It’s no different at Alpha.

Sessions start with food,

because it’s a great way to

build community and get

to know each other.

VIDEO

The 30 minutes

presentations are engaging

and inspire conversation.

Each explores the big

issues around faith and

unpack the basics of

Christianity, addressing

questions such as Who is

Jesus? How can I have

faith? Who Is the Holy

Spirit? Can I be filled with

the Spirit?

DISCUSSION

The chance to share

thoughts and ideas on the

topic, and simply discuss it in

a small group. There’s no

obligation to say anything

and there’s nothing you

can’t say (seriously). Hear

others and offer your own

perspective in an honest,

friendly and open

environment.

Journey through Questions of Life, Faith and God “Alpha was a safe place where I could say out loud whatever I had to say.”

“I thought that following God meant giving up all the things I enjoyed about life...” “It all turned out to be life changing.”

“Each time I was heard and listened to without judgement, it allowed me to share more and ask more and share more and ask more...

and then finally meet Jesus.” A lot of people want to talk about their faith...but they’re unsure how to.”

“100% of the prayers that don’t get asked, will go unanswered.”

LIFE KIDS, EDGE & LIFE TEEN

SESSIONS RESUME ON AUGUST 20th!

Sundays, 10:15 am – 11:30 am

Raising children can be a challenging endeavor. We are excited about the opportunity to help you raise them as disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ. Our catechetical programs have as their chief objective to accompany the children on a journey of faith that makes it possible for them to become, over time, his faithful disciples. We believe that if you worship together as a family every Sunday (barring illness or travel) and see to it that they participate regularly in RE classes, you will experience rewarding benefits. Most of the year we also offer small group faith and bible studies for parents that meet at the same time the children are in class. We also offer coffee and donuts in the Joyce Center during this time. If child care is necessary for your to take advantage of these classes, please let us know as that is another service we provide during that time frame. Grades Kindergarten through 5th grade are part of our LIFE KIDS program and meet in the education wing of the main building. 6th – 12th graders meet in our Youth building An updated SIGNED registration form is required to be on file before any child can be added to the class roster. Registration forms may be found at the welcome desk in the Commons, at the Parish Office or on the parish website. Please complete and return them ASAP. You can drop them in the maroon basket labeled RE REGISTRATION, in the commons.

PRAYER SUPPORT FOR ALPHA

More than 400 parishioners have experienced Alpha over the past two years. We call upon them now to provide prayer support during the actual sessions which begin August 30th from 7—8:30pm. We would like some individuals to actually come to the Blessed Sacrament Chapel during at least part of each session to pray before the presence of The Lord. Others may choose to pray at home. Or, a combination of both. There will be sign up sheets on the welcome counter this weekend and next. Do you have to have experienced Alpha to offer the prayer support? Not at all. The whole purpose of this prayer is to ask God to rain down his grace on all participants as they move through the course.

BULLETIN AD REP HERE NEXT WEEK

If you are interested in placing or maintaining an existing ad in our Sunday bulletin, the Trinity rep will be at the parish this coming week. Just call the parish office and ask for Ronnie.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 23RD AT 10:00 AM

This will be an occasion of great splendor for the Catholic Church in Oklahoma. Cardinals, Bishops, Priests, Deacons, Consecrated Religious, and lay faithful will be gathered to honor Fr. Rother as he is formally declared Blessed. Beatification is the rite that leads to canonization—once a verifiable miracle has occurred through his direct intercession. One charter bus has been reserved and tickets are being sold that cover the expense. We propose that those not going on the bus be willing to join with others by meeting in our parking lot on that Saturday morning. There are a number of parking lots and garages within walking distance of the Cox Arena.
