Annual Summer Missionary Appeal

Dear Parishioners of St. Michael’s: I would like to express my gratitude to all of you for the generous contri-butions you made to our mis-sions in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Your contributions will make a lot of difference to the people we serve in Congo. I am also truly grateful for your warm welcome, friendliness, and kindness which made a big impression on me. Tru-ly, my time at Saint Michael’s is one of the nicest experiences I have had doing the Mission Appeal.

I also want to thank Father John, Father Mark, Susan, Mary, Dotty, and all the people who serve at St. Michael’s. Thank you for all your service to the Church. May God bless you all! You all have a special place in my heart.

With a grateful heart, Father Ron Sibugan, A.A.

Sister Elizabeth to Speak at August 17-18 Masses on Catholic Education and St. Jerome’s School

Sister Elizabeth Dalessio, MPF, Ed.D. of the Religious Sisters Filippini has recently succeeded Sister Angelina Pelliccia, MPF as principal of St. Jerome School. Sister Elizabeth has a wealth of experience and expertise in Catholic education as noted below and she will be speaking at all of our Masses during the August 17-18 weekend as the new school year approaches.

Classes will resume at St. Jerome School on Tuesday, Septem-ber 3 for grade levels Pre-K through 8th. Seats are still available in all classes although enrollment in some classes is nearly at full

capacity. St. Jerome School was recognized as a 2018 National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education.

Sister Elizabeth’s experience in education includes serving children and adults in both the non-public and public sectors. Her ministry in Catholic education includes serving as an elementary and high school teacher as well as principal and director of Religious Education at parishes in the Trenton Diocese. In addition to her current duties at St. Jerome, Sister also is a professor in the Department of Education at St. Peter’s University.

Sister Elizabeth brings to her role as principal of Saint Jerome School the lived experience of the life of a Filippini Sister for over 40 years. She holds sacred the gift of her Consecrated Life and is grateful that she lives this vocation as a Religious Teacher Filippini. In these challenging times, it is important to her that Catholic edu-cation continues to grow so that the mission of her community to “Go and Teach the Word of God” may impact the lives of the People of God, fulfilling the ultimate goal to give honor and glory to God.

We welcome Sister Elizabeth to St. Michael’s. Please pray for Sister’s success and for the continuing excellence and success of St. Jerome School and that the stu-dents may continue to grow in their faith and in their knowledge and love of God.

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults

Would you like to become a Catholic? Or perhaps you have been baptized yet never received First Holy Com-munion or made your Confirmation?

The Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA) classes begin in the fall. If you are inter-ested in attending these classes to com-plete your Sacraments, please contact Kevin Connelly (our Director of Religious Education) at 732-483-0360 ext. 3 or Mary Valan at the parish office.

Call for CCD Catechists God has a plan for you - and it might be as a CCD teach-

er, teacher’s aide, or volunteer. Please contact Kevin Connelly (Director of Religious Ed) at 732-483-0360

ext. 3 to join our teams on Sunday mornings or Tuesday afternoons. God may be calling YOU.

Catechism classes at St. Michael’s begin September 15 and 17. Every child in grades 1-8 should be enrolled unless they attend Catholic school. Pre-K and kindergarten children are also welcome. Registration is still on-going; however, materi-als and book orders will be com-pleted soon. Please register your

children ASAP. Registration forms can be found in the back of the church or emailed upon request. Please call Kevin Connelly, Director of Religious Education at 732- 483-0360 ext. 3 for more infor-mation.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the “rite” and also the formal preparation process for adults or teens to join the Catholic Church, or for those who are already baptized and who want to become full members by completing the remaining Sacraments of Initiation: Eucharist and Confirmation. RCIA begins in late September or early October and meets usually on a weekly basis. Any adult who is seriously thinking about be-coming a Roman Catholic-Christian, whether presently baptized or unbaptized, or someone who would like to receive the sacraments of Eucharist and/or Confirmation, should call me (Kevin Con-nelly, Director of Religious Education at (732)483-0360 ext. 3) for more information about RCIA.

RCIA is primarily a journey of faith focused on conversion that gradually leads to full initiation into Catholic Church. It is a sacramental process of formation, prayer, and reflection on the Gospels that provides a solid foundation for a lifelong and ever deepening relationship with Christ and His Church.

It begins with a person’s interest in Jesus Christ. This is the pre-catechumenate phase also known as the Inquiry Stage. This is a time for questions and learning about the faith and lasts until the inquirer discerns whether he or she truly desires to become Catholic.

Following a decision to respond to God’s call, a person commits to the catechumenate in the Rite of Welcome. This is the lengthiest period of the initiation process and the catechumen learns the basic points about living Catholic faith and life. From this time the catechumens gather with the Catholic community on Sundays for the first part of the Mass to hear the Scriptures and to reflect on the meaning of God's Word through the homily.

Next follows the Period of Purification and Enlightenment that corresponds with Lent. This stage involves in-tense reflection and continued conversion in preparation for rebirth at the Rite of Initiation which happens at the Easter Vigil Mass on Holy Saturday Night. Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation are conferred on this holy night.

From Easter until Pentecost is a fifty-day span called the Period of Mystagogy. This is a time of joyful reflection and for sharing in the mission of Christ and the completion of the initiation process. It reminds all Catholics that we must always be growing in the love of Christ and in living the life of grace personally and with our Catholic family.

Please call me to discuss any questions. Dates and times for instruction sessions and Sunday Mass will be deter-mined once the members of this year’s RCIA group have been determined and I have a sense of their schedules and availability. May the Holy Spirit guide you as you discern your call to the Catholic faith and to the Sacraments. Kevin Connelly Director of Religious Education

Expired Missalettes Available

A good number of parishioners often ask about taking home a copy of the paperback Missalettes when a particular issue of the book has expired. The most recent previous issue of the Missalettes covered the period of time from April 28 to August 10 and we replaced those now-obsolete books last Saturday morning after the conclusion of the 9:00 a.m. Mass. If you would like to have a copy of that “now- retired” Mis-salette (for ref- erence to the Scripture read- ings and prayers, spiritual reading, enjoying the hymns and the artwork, etc.), we have several copies on-hold in the ushers’ closet at the rear of the church. Please feel free to ask one of the ushers to give you a copy.

Anniversary Couples from Ocean and Mon-mouth Counties may attend the Sunday, October 6, 2019 Mass and Blessing at 3:00 p.m. at the Co-Cathedral of St. Robert Bellarmine in Freehold. Cou-ples must register through their home parish; the regis-tration deadline for all anniversary couples is Sep-tember 15, 2019. Please phone our parish secretary Mary Valan to make a reservation.

The Diocese of Trenton’s 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal is in its sixth month. It commenced here at St. Michael’s during the weekend of February 23rd. The Diocese-wide goal is $7.0 million and approximately $5,000,547 (71.44%) has been pledged or collected toward that Diocesan goal as of Au-gust 4, 2019. Our parish goal (as noted in the bulletin and announced at week-end Masses) is $109,000. Our parish reached its goal with pledges during the 22nd campaign week and with actual collections during the 24th campaign week. These achievements were “firsts” for our parish in that we reached both goals (pledges and collections) approximately 19 weeks earlier this year than last year (July compared to November). And last year was the very first year in Appeal history and in St. Michael’s history that our parish reached its goal. Thank you to all who have contributed in any form to the Appeal. These suc-cesses in the Annual Appeal have resulted in rebates to our parish of $23,729 last year and approximately $24,000 this year. Those funds have been utilized for the Lower Church ladies room and men’s room renovations, the church’s foundation excavation and waterproofing, masonry and painting repairs in and around the church, CCD books and supplies, and other parish expenses. Currently, collections are at roughly 94.7% of our $115,727 total raised as indicated in the thermometer at left. And so we will continue to track these “Phase Two” collection efforts and progress reports in the bulletin during the next few weeks in order to achieve 100% collection of all pledges.

May God bless the good people of St. Michael’s and thank you for your generous contributions that help the Diocese provide the spiritual and social services that it renders to over 800,000 Catholics and others in our area.

*Our parish goal is $109,000. Pledges plus actual collections are currently an “amount raised” of $115,727; out of that amount the collections received are $109,507. This leaves a “pledge balance” of $6,220 (or approxi-mately 5.3%) in order to achieve 100% collection of all pledges. Contributions have been received from over 475 participants. Thank you!

To be human is to suffer—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. In addition to our own suffering, we also encounter the suffering of those around us. While the world of medicine attempts to relieve suffering and the media tries to sell us on a life without pain, only the Church offers the perspective that suffering has meaning. St. John Paul II said that suf-fering without meaning can lead to despair, but if we can attach meaning to our suffering, we are capable of going through anything.

Not all storms come to disrupt your life. Some come to clear your path…

Knowing when to say “yes” or “no” are lessons we all can use. Both allow us to take ownership of our lives, our beliefs and desires. It is ok to say “Yes”.

“We can learn to say yes to things that feel good, to what we want - for others and ourselves.

We can learn to say yes to fun. Yes to meetings, to calling a friend, asking for help.

We can learn to say yes to healthy relationships, to people and activities that are good for us.

We can learn to say yes to ourselves, what we want and need, our instincts, and the leading of our Higher Power. We can learn to say yes when it feels right to help some-

one. We can learn to say yes to our feelings. We can learn to identify when we need to take a walk, take a nap, have our back rubbed, or buy ourselves flowers.” Unknown

The PATHWAY TO HEAL is for those that need sup-port with life's new paths and journeys.

We are a ministry for separated, divorced and widowed persons.

If you need a place to come and feel safe please plan on attending our group.
