CATHOLIC CHURCH AND SCHOOL Saint Pius X parish: www.spxcc.org school: www.stpiusxschoolcc.org Welcome to St. Pius X Parish August 18, 2013 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time “To renew all things in Christ” Dear Friends, The word of the day is butanding. It is a strange and curious word. It is a name, really. It is the kind of word that has a musicality to it that makes one want to say it over and over. For that reason, it was the most oft repeated word for me and my companions during my trip to the Philippines. I will get to it’s meaning shortly. I was glad that we had finally come to a stop. The journey to the town of Oslob came a day after we returned to Cebu from Bohol Island. The two hour trip wasn’t too bad, but it wasn’t a walk in the park either. Throughout the duration of the 60 mile trip, the lush green vegetation provided a good amount of shade and a respite from the commotion of the busy streets of Cebu City. Wet rice fields framed by the emerald foliage of palm trees, acacia trees, and banana trees passed in and out of view as we traveled southwest. Our SUV drifted left and right as we overtook slower cars, motorized tricycles, bicycles, and pedestrians. Just as quickly as we were able to reach 50 mph, we were brought to a crawl of 10 mph – dodging both vehicles and people. This is the normal way of life in the Philippines. Apart from a traffic light here and there, rules of the road are virtually non-existent. The car horn becomes your friend and the courage to pull out into the oncoming traffic of a major thoroughfare is crucial. Lanes are of little significance and stop signs are a rarity. It is not uncommon for people, motorcycles, tricycles, and more people to congregate alongside the streets and roadways. Individuals milling about, and the varying speeds of vehicles makes any journey long. This is true in most places in Southeast Asia. Once we arrived at the spartan lodge outside of Oslob, we disembarked, placed our bags in our rooms, and found a sheltered area to lay out all the food that we had brought. There was rice, pork, chicken, bananas, and other typical filipino cuisine for us to eat. Once we had abated our hunger, we found seats overlooking the varying shades of clear blue water gently lapping up against the shore. A couple in our group immediately tested the water with a swim. In the fading twilight, we all surveyed the scene in front of us. Lush tropical islands emerged off shore, while the familiar wooden boats with out-riggings rocked patiently with the ocean swells. Not far off the shore awaited the butanding. The butanding were ready for our arrival early the next morning. “Butanding” or “big fish” is the local name for whale sharks. This was the purpose of our trip. We had come to swim with these mammoth creatures. We wiped the sleep from our eyes at 5:30 a.m., and were ready to go by 6:00 a.m. After an initial orientation, we embarked on the small wooden boats and anchored just a few hundred yards offshore. The whale sharks were already feeding. I was the first to splash into the water. As I did, I realized my foot nudged something soft

ist” Dear Friends,

The word of the day is butanding.

This was the purpose of our trip. and bulky below the surface. I adjusted my snorkel and took a peek. What I saw was exhilarating. A massive, spotted fish was swimming by.

Whale sharks are the largest fish in the ocean. They are fish, because they are not mammals. They are sharks, because the orientation of their fins are the same as sharks. They are like whales because of their size and because they are filter feeders. These particular specimens were juveniles almost 30 feet long. Adults can get up to 40 long or more.

We reveled in taking underwater pictures of ourselves with the butanding in the background. Everyone was laughing and having a great time seeing these wonders of nature. After 45 minutes of viewing, we returned to shore, had breakfast, and returned to the big city. When we showed off our pictures to the relatives who did not join us, they all wondered why they weren’t invited. Three days later, we went back again. This time, everyone came. The butanding welcomed us as they had before! ( . . . to be continued.)

God bless,

From the Parish Mailbox…

The church family of St. Pius X, I want to express my sincere appreciation for all of your prayers, calls, cards and concern for me after my accident. I can tell you that there was a guardian angel watching over me, and only by the Grace of God that my injuries were not more serious. I am now at home recovering more quickly than was expected, and despite some short term limitations, the future is bright for a full and speedy recovery. Please know that it is through your prayers and kindness that I gain strength and comfort. Allison and I are so very grateful. I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds. I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing the praises of your name, O Most High. Psalm 9:1-2 Stephen Tagliabue

Altar and Rosary SocietyAll women of St. Pius X Parish are invited to join the Altar

They also participate in other parish activities throughout the year and help financially in parish projects. Their next meeting will be held this Thursday, August 22nd at 9:00 a.m. in CC#2. Coffee and fellowship will precede the meeting. Dues will be payable at this time. For additional information, contact Emily Dickinson at 446-2401.

“fun” items like puzzle-type games, new greeting cards, etc. to be sent in CARE boxes to active military personnel in “war”

zones overseas. Boxes in the vestibule of the church are for your donations. If you have a friend or family member you would like to have a box sent to, please give their name and address (along with yours) to the church office. Please include the time that the person is expected to return to the States. Any monetary donations are welcome: make the check payable to “Coastal Bend Troop Support” and put in the offertory collection. Any questions, contact Sr. Barbara Bluntzer at the church office.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATIONSchool NewsBy Principal Bryan Krnavek

Safe Environment Coordinator TrainingThe Office for Child and Youth Protection is offering two

training opportunities for individuals interested in becoming a (new) Safe Environment Coordinator (SEC). Our SECs facilitate the Creating and Maintaining a Safe Environment (CMSE) Core and Recertification class for those in our diocese who work or minister to our youth and vulnerable adults. The scheduled training dates and times are as follows:

Morning Session – Tuesday, September 10, 2013 (10am-Noon) – Chancery Office (620 Lipan, Corpus Christi) First floor Conference Room or

Evening Session – Wednesday, September 11, 2013 (5:30pm-7:30pm) - Chancery Office (620 Lipan, Corpus Christi) First floor Conference Room

Please contact Kristi Skrobarczyk by September 6, 2013 to register for the training class you would like to attend. I will need an accurate headcount for supplies. I can be reached at 361-693-6685 or via e-mail at [email protected]. There is no charge for this training.

Well, we made it through the first full week of school! We still had a few tears from some of our little ones, but overall it was a great start to the school year. Some of our teachers and staff reported being a bit tired, but that is to be expected until the routines settle down.

Our Fall PTO Fundraiser kicked off this past Monday. The students were given their packets and told all about the exciting prizes they can win for selling a certain amount of items. It was also revealed that if classes reach their quota for number of items sold, Father Paul and myself will have to kiss a pig. I think the hardest part is going to be catching the pig! The students are selling cookie dough, magazine subscriptions and seasonal gifts. If you are approached by one of our students, please consider buying a few items. Money raised will help with the purchase of computers for classrooms and our future computer lab.

Our first school mass of the year was held this past Thursday instead of the normal Wednesday due to the Feast of the Assumption, which is a holy day of obligation. Thank you to the students in Mrs. Stovall’s 6th grade class for serving as lectors/altar servers and Mrs. Van Maren’s 3rd grade class for serving as gift bearers. The students also began their daily morning prayer in the school prayer garden. During this time, students pray, recite the Pledge of Allegiance and Texas Pledge as well as sing patriotic songs. If you have never attended one of these Morning Prayer sessions, I totally recommend it. It is a great way to start the day!

Blue Jay of the Day, Student of the Week and Manner of the Month began on Monday as well. These three activities reward students for the good things they do and the appropriate manners they display throughout the school day.

We are in need of volunteers for various organizations and committees that help with our school. If you would like to help with the Halloween Carnival, Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students), the Atrium and/or Golf Tournament, please contact the school office at 992-1343 and we will put you in contact with the person in charge of that organization and/or committee. All that is required is a little time and energy.

I am very proud to announce that the school received two monetary donations this past week. The 2012-2013 Student Council donated $1000 to the Library and the Catholic Family Fraternal of Texas (K.J.Z.T.) donated $1000 for the purchase of computers. A big Thank You and God’s blessing to these two groups from the students and staff of St. Pius X Catholic School.

This weekly column is written to keep our parishioners updated on all the goings-on and activities of the best Catholic School in Corpus Christi!

Have a blessed week!

We would like to invite you to an hour of prayer in the church every Thursday evening from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. Come spend some time in the presence of the Lord in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament. You’re guaranteed to feel rejuvenated and more peaceful after passing time in the presence of Our Savior!

Invisible MonasteryWe NEED your help to build a culture of vocations! Our

diocese and Church is in great need of Priests and Religious. Please join our diocese’s Invisible Monastery to pray for an increase in vocations to the Priesthood and Religious Life. You can pledge to pray for vocations either daily or weekly through Mass, the Rosary, or a Holy Hour. Just go to www.ccpriest.org. Please help achieve our hope to have someone, somewhere in the Diocese of Corpus Christi praying for vocations twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

Are we still required to fast before Communion? The Code of Canon Law states: “One who is to receive the

Most Holy Eucharist is to abstain from any food or drink, with the exception only of water and medicine, for at least the period of one hour before Holy Communion” (Canon 919, par. 1). People who are in ill health or who would put themselves at physical risk if they abstain from food or drink should seek the advice of their physician about whether or not to fast before Communion.

Technically, chewing gum doesn’t break the fast but it isn’t necessarily appropriate during Mass. What do you do with the gum when it’s time for Communion? If you swallow it, you are violating the fast. (And you should never stick it under the pew!)

Fasting before receiving the Eucharist reminds us of the great difference between earthly food, which sustains only perishable life, and the food of the Eucharist, which is key for eternal life. By observing the fast we approach Communion with a physical and spiritual hunger.

Reconciliation breathed into life by ChristThe Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation was born

on Easter Sunday Night when Jesus came through the locked door, breathed on the Apostles and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit, whose sins you forgive are forgiven, those sins you retain are retained.” It began with the breath of Christ.

Baptism is a start. Baptism forgives all sins committed to that point. Sins committed after Baptism can be forgiven through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. When we sin, we harm ourselves, someone else, the Church (by diminishing the holiness of the Church), and the community. It’s necessary to face our sin, confess it, make amends for it, and avoid its repeat.

It’s not just for mortal sins. It’s imperative to seek forgiveness for mortal sins through this Sacrament but regular Confession is like having a spiritual check-up. Without it, our sense of sin starts to blur. And that is dangerous.

Contrition is more than regret. God cannot forgive sins without our contrition. Contrition looks toward the future. It helps us improve as disciples.
