A Letter from Fr. Dom

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, One of the most formidable experiences of my high school years was being a member of my parish Youth Ministry. It was during our weekly meetings, yearly retreats, service projects, and other activities that kept me active in my faith, engaged in the community, and strengthened the relationships between my friends and I. To this day I’m still good friends with the people I was in youth ministry with. Because of our high school youth group, two of our friends who met there are getting married, one girl works as a special education teacher, another is a social worker, and I attribute my own vocation to the priesthood all to the formation we received in our parish youth ministry. It’s with great joy and anticipation that I announce to you the beginnings of our new High School Youth Ministry here at St. Ed’s. Starting on Sunday, September 11, all high schoolers are invited to weekly Mass and gatherings in our Church Hall from 7:00 - 8:30 pm. It’s my goal and hope that our new Youth Ministry will be just as formidable, engaging, and fun as I experienced in my parish youth ministry. We will be meeting every Sunday evening from 7:00 - 8:30 pm in the Church Hall for Mass and an evening program of either discussion, games, prayer, or socials. We will also go on fun outings together, work on service projects, and maybe even travel on a mission trip or attend conferences. While our weekly meetings are set, there is still flexibility in the extra events/outings we can do together. So, please help us spread the word to all high schoolers that they are invited to our kickoff event on Sunday, September 11, from 7:00 - 8:30 pm in the Church Hall. Every evening will start with Mass and our evening program will follow. There is no requirement to attend every Sunday nor is there registration, all high schoolers are invited to attend when they are able. Below, you will find our schedule for September and October. I can’t wait to meet the young people of the parish and begin this new ministry with them. God Bless, Fr. Dom

Stewardship for the Month of July 2016 “Do you think I have come to give you peace on Earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.” LUKE 12:51 Living a stewardship lifestyle means stepping out of our comfort zone when needed. Many of us like to play it safe, not cause waves, stay in the middle of the road. Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Prophets have always had a tough row to hoe. Their words, often unwelcome, are used against them to persecute and even kill them. Such was the fate of the Old Testament prophets, and Jeremiah is a great example of this. Jesus endured opposition from sinners, and did not turn back from a shameful death in order to rise to a glorious new life. The ultimate prophet, Jesus sought to warn the people of His time and ours of the divisions that His words would cause, showing Himself to be the prophet of all time. We all need to look at our divisions and dilemmas in light of Jesus’ teachings and warnings, and seek to understand all that He has proclaimed and taught about what will happen if we fail to listen. ________________________________________________________ A Prophet’s Lot Jeremiah loved Jerusalem and its people. He spoke the word of God to them, that they might change their evil ways and return to the Lord with prayer and supplication for deliverance from their foes. The city of Jerusalem was under siege, threatened by famine and in dire straights. The king and the people believed, as false prophets told them, that because they inhabited the holy city and held the Ark of the Covenant, no one could conquer them, and that God would save them. Jeremiah told them the opposite. He said that if they did not turn back from their unfaithfulness, they would be conquered and destroyed, and the people taken into slavery. They did not want to hear this, and plotted against Jeremiah. But God saved him from their hands, and although they were conquered and taken into slavery in Babylon, Jeremiah went with them to their fate, ever the faithful prophet. ___________________________________________________________________ The Greatest Prophet Jesus tells the disciples what they do not expect to hear. He tells them that He has not come to bring peace, but division. He prophesies that people will be divided by the power of His words, families torn by disagreements. We are seeing the same in our own country and in our Church at the present time. Paul teaches that, surrounded by a cloud of witnesses, the saints, we should keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. He endured the cross for the sake of believers, enduring its shame and pain for the sake of the reign of God. He endured opposition so that we might “not grow weary and lose heart.” We have not resisted “to the point of shedding blood.” So we must be brave, trust in Jesus to be telling us what we may be puzzled to hear, and walk in faith toward “the joy that lies before us.”

Giving Back The Virgin received salvation so that she may give it back to the centuries.

Transforming Love: Reflections on Pope

Francis’ latest document, The Joy of Love

Every Monday in August, Fr. Dom will offer a series of presentations and reflections on Pope Francis’ The Joy of Love. The document focusses on the family and how we are called to love one another. You do not need to read the document or have a copy because Fr. Dom will explain the document and help us to live out the vision Pope Francis is laying out for the family and the Church. All are welcome to attend! You do not need to attend every session and you can join us at any point. No registration is required. Just come, join us, and pray with us as we learn together from our Holy Father, Pope Francis.

Sessions will be held on the following

Monday evenings from 7:00 - 8:00 pm:

August 15: The Vocation of the Family

August 22: Love in Marriage (a night of scripture)

August 29: The Spirituality of Marriage and the

Family

Jubilee Year of Mercy This Jubilee Y ear of Mercy bids us share our own experience of Jesus’ mercy with those on what Pope Francis calls the “peripheries”—people who feel marginalized, even unwelcome—inviting them to come home. But with all this mercy, why today’s mayhem? “Do you think I have come to establish peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division” (Luke 12:51). Jesus “breaks down” those “breakups” in painful detail—parents, children, even in-laws. “Against” appears eight times in

five verses. Jeremiah faced death for bearing witness (Jeremiah 38:4). Can’t we bear at least a small share of the sometimes merciless cost of sharing mercy? The Letter to the Hebrews warns us, keep your “eyes fixed on Jesus” and “so great a cloud of witnesses,” lest we “grow weary and lose heart” as we run “the race that lies before us” (Hebrews 12:1–3). After all, “for the sake of the joy that lay before Him,” Jesus “endured the cross” (12:2). Can’t we endure our small crosses for the sake of sharing mercy? _____________________________________________________________________
