Pope Francis at Angelus: ‘It’s evil not to do good!’ Ahead of the Angelus prayer on Sunday, Pope Francis said being a good Christian is more than merely not doing evil: A good Christian does good and actively opposes evil. By Devin Watkins Pope Francis prayed the Angelus in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday with tens of thousands of pilgrims, including a large group of young Italians to whom the Pope spoke on Saturday evening. In his address ahead of the Angelus, the Holy Father said it is not enough simply not to do evil. But to be a good Christian, he said, “we must also adhere to goodness and do good.” The Pope was reflecting on the day’s Second Reading, in which St. Paul tells the faithful not to sadden the Holy Spirit (Eph 4:30-5:2). 'Do you do good?' Pope Francis said saddening the Spirit means not living according to the promises made at our Baptism, which are to renounce evil and adhere to good. “Many times we hear some saying, ‘I don't hurt anyone.’ That’s fine,” the Pope said. “But do you do good?” Pope Francis said many people “do not do evil, but neither do they do any good”. These people pass their lives “in indifference, apathy, and lukewarmness." He said this attitude of simply not doing evil is contrary to the Gospel and the nature of young people. And he gave them a simple formula for life: “It’s good not to do evil. But it’s evil not to do good!” Oppose evil The Holy Father said Christians must forgive and not hate; pray for our enemies and not hold a grudge; bring peace and not cause division. Above all, he said we must “interrupt others when we hear them speaking badly of someone else” and not just refrain from bad-mouthing others. Pope Francis said evil spreads “where there are no bold Christians to oppose it with goodness.” “If we do not oppose evil, we feed it with our silence

Ángelus del Papa: La Virgen nos ayude a decir “no” al mal y “si” al bien
En el Ángelus del XIX Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario, el Papa Francisco invitó a vivir de manera coherente con las promesas del Bautismo, renovados en la Confirmación: renunciar al mal y adherir al bien. Renato Martinez – Ciudad del Vaticano “¡Hoy los exhorto a ser protagonistas del bien! No se sien-tan contentos cuando no hagan el mal; cada uno es culpable del bien que podía hacer y no lo ha hecho”, lo dijo el Papa Francisco en su alocución antes de rezar la oración mariana del Ángelus del XIX Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario, Do-mingo en el cual el Obispo de Roma encontró a los jóvenes peregrinos de las Diócesis de Italia. No entristezcan al Espíritu Santo Comentando la segunda lectura que la liturgia presenta este Domingo, el Santo Padre recordó la invitación del apóstol Pablo: “No entristezcan al Espíritu Santo de Dios, que los ha marcado con un sello para el día de la redención” (Ef 4,30). Pero, ¿Cómo se entristece al Espíritu Santo, se pre-gunta el Papa? Todos los hemos recibido en el Bautismo y en la Confirmación, por ello, para no entristecer al Espíritu Santo, es necesario vivir de manera coherente con las pro-mesas del Bautismo, renovados en la Confirmación: tienen dos aspectos: renunciar al mal y adherir al bien. Renunciar al mal Renunciar al mal, explica el Sumo Pontífice, significa decir “no” a las tentaciones, al pecado, a satanás. De modo con-creto significa decir “no” a una cultura de la muerte, que se manifiesta en la fuga de la realidad hacia una felicidad falsa que se expresa en la mentira, en el engaño, en la in-justicia, en el desprecio del otro. “La vida nueva que nos ha sido dada en el Bautismo – precisa el Papa – y que tiene al Espíritu como fuente, rechaza una conducta dominada por sentimientos de división y de discordia”. Por ello, el após-tol Pablo exhorta a quitar del propio corazón ‘toda amargu-ra, arrebatos, ira, gritos e insultos y toda clase de malda-des’ (v. 31). Estos seis elementos o vicios que perturban la alegría del Espíritu, agrega el Pontífice, envenenan el cora-zón y conducen a imprecaciones contra Dios y contra el prójimo. Adherir al bien Pero, no basta no hacer el mal para ser un buen cristiano, afirma el Papa Francisco, es necesario adherir al bien y hacer el bien. Es por ello que San Pablo continua: “Sean mutuamente buenos y compasivos, perdonándose los unos a los otros como Dios los ha perdonado en Cristo” (v. 32). Muchas veces escuchamos a algunos decir: “Yo no hago
del mal a nadie”. De acuerdo, ¿pero hace el bien? Cuantas personas no hace el mal, pero ni siquiera hacen el bien, y sus vidas transcurren en la indiferencia, en la apa-tía, en el desinterés. “Esta actitud – afirma el Santo Padre – es contraria al Evange-lio, y es contraria también al índole de ustedes jóvenes, que por naturaleza son dinámicos, apasionados y valientes”. ¡Sean protagonistas del bien! Hoy los exhorto a ser protagonistas del bien, anima el Papa Francisco, no se sientan contentos cuando no hagan el mal; cada uno es culpable del bien que podía hacer y no lo ha hecho. “No basta no odiar, es necesario perdonar; no basta no tener rencor, es necesario orar por los enemigos; no basta no ser causa de división, es necesario llevar la paz donde no existe; no basta no hablar mal de los demás, es necesario interrumpir cuando escuchamos hablar mal de alguien”. Si no nos oponemos al mal, subraya el Papa, lo alimentamos de modo tácito. Es necesario intervenir donde el mal se difunde; porque el mal se difunde donde faltan cristianos audaces que se opongan con el bien, “caminando en la caridad, según la exhortación de San Pablo. Queridos jóvenes, concluyó el Papa Francisco, en estos días han caminado mucho y puedo decirles: ¡Caminen en la caridad! Caminemos juntos hacia el Sínodo de los Obispos. La Virgen María nos sostenga con su materna intercesión, para que cada uno de nosotros, cada día, con los hechos, pueda decir “no” al mal y “si” al bien. Saludos a los jóvenes y peregrinos Después de rezar a la Madre de Dios, el Papa Francisco saludo a los fieles y pere-grinos congregados en la Plaza de San Pedro. En particular, el Pontífice saludó a los jóvenes de las diócesis italianas, acompañados con sus respectivos Obispos, sacerdotes y educadores. A todos ellos, el Obispo de Roma les agradeció por su entusiasmo y su fe, su presencia y su testimonio cristiano. Asimismo, el Santo Pa-dre agradeció a la Conferencia Episcopal Italiana, representada por su Presidente el Cardenal Gualtiero Bassetti por haber organizado este encuentro de los jóvenes en vista del próximo Sínodo de los Obispos.

25th Wedding Anniversary Jubilee Mass celebration The 2018 Wedding Anniversary Jubilee Mass honoring couples celebrating their Silver (25th) Anniversary of mar-riage in the Catholic Church will be held on Sunday, Sep-tember 16, 2018 at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart at 3:00 pm. Whether or not a couple attends the ceremony, they are eligible to receive a special recognition. Registration will close on August 24, 2018 at mid-night. Reserved seating will be limited. Should you arrive when the reserved space is taken, please seat anywhere else in the Church. Each couple will be able to bring a maximum of 6 family members or friends to the Mass. 50th Wedding Anniversary Jubilee Mass celebration The 2018 Wedding Anniversary Jubilee Mass honoring couples celebrating their Golden (50th) Anniversary of mar-riage in the Catholic Church will be held on Sunday, October 21th, 2018 at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart at 3 pm. Whether or not a couple attends the ceremony, they are eligi-ble to receive a special recognition. Registration for this cele-
bration will close on September 30th 2018 at mid-night. Reserved seating will be limited for couples celebrating their anniversary, so please register soon to be able to reserve your space and also to make sure you will receive your acknowledgment on that day. P R : We kindly request that all families of our parish be registered before registering for CCE or sacramental preparation classes. Registration and change forms are available in the vestibule of the church and in the parish office. To update your parish information, please call the parish office from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday - Friday. B P I : Parents are asked to register their child for Baptism, to bring a copy of the child’s birth certificate to the parish office, and to attend a pre-Baptism class. Godparents are encouraged to attend class. Godparents must be at least sixteen years of age, practicing Catholics, Confirmed, and, if married, married through the Church. Classes are offered the first Friday of every other month, 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. in the Family Life Center. Parents are kindly asked not to bring their children to the class. Certificates of attendance for the baptism preparation are provided at the end of the class for those who are not baptizing at St. Theresa Church. Please call the office to register for the class at 281-494-1156. The next class will be on Friday, October 5, 2018. P -M S : This pre-marriage seminar is to commence the marriage preparation for all couples who wish to be married within St. Theresa's Catholic community. It is held on the second Tuesday of every other month at 7:00 pm. It provides an opportunity for couples to learn about the Catholic Church's theol-ogy of matrimony and begin the process to properly receive this great sacrament of the Church. Couples will learn details of how to plan and prepare for their wedding day and matrimony thereafter. Please pre-register by calling 281-494-1156. The next seminar will be Tuesday, October 9, 2018.
