A Pause That Refreshes I caught a few scenes of the opening of this year's Summer Olympics in Rio. It was colorful and playful and a wonderful relief from much of what is on television these days. What really struck me was the way that everyone in Rio's huge Maracana stadium was celebrating two things at once: their having a homeland - big or small didn't matter - and their being part of something greater than their own country.

Despite occasional eruptions of violence, over many decades the Olympics have provided participants and viewers around the world an experience of what our world could look like if we brought our best onto a field of play, instead of on a field of battle.

Watching scenes from Rio like the Christ the Redeemer statue, where the Olympic torch was ignited, and Copacabana beach, I felt that connection we have when a remote part of the world had even just for a few days or weeks become close and real to us by our seeing and touching and tasting it up close and personal. As I wrote to you about my recent trip, Brazil is a large nation struggling with political corruption, crime and disease. Yet how proud and hopeful the Brazilian people must feel to be able to show the world a beautiful spectacle. Parabens! Congratulations! to the people of Brazil for what they are accomplishing these days in spite of their suffering!

Naturally I took particular delight in watching our American athletes parade onto the field cheered on by many. Red, white and blue uniforms and the star spangled banner touch our hearts in a very special way. At the same time, I could not help but admire and even be dazzled by the flags and costumes that represent the many other nations of the world. Even tiny countries, unknown to most of us and smaller than some of our states, could comfortably share the spotlight and draw loud applause. This is an amazing thing. We are all there to compete, to do our best to come out on top with medals. And yet this joyous parade really conveyed a different message: people are great and wonderful just for being who they are, for being faithful to what marks them and their culture as unique and beautiful in their own way. No one took in this parade of the nations with the intent of judging. Sure, we have our favorites, but we all know that such things are matters of taste and preference. To each his own.

The wishes and prayer of Pope Francis should be our own as we take this summer break from a world in constant strife and conflict:

I would like to send an especially warm greeting to the Brazilian people, in particular to the city of Rio de Janeiro, which is hosting the athletes and passionate fans from all over the world on the occasion of the Olym-pics. In a world thirsting for peace, tolerance, and reconciliation, I hope that the spirit of the Olympic Games inspires all – participants and spectators – to “fight the good fight” and finish the race together (cf. 2 Tim 4,7-8), desiring to obtain as a prize, not a medal, but something much more precious: the construction of a civili-zation in which solidarity reigns and is based upon the recognition that we are all members of the same human family, regardless of the differences of culture, skin color, or religion. And for all Brazilians, who with their joy and characteristic hospitality have organized the ‘Feast of Sport’, I hope that this will be an opportunity to overcome difficult moments and commit themselves to working as a team to build a more just and safe country, betting all on a future full of hope and joy. May God bless you all! Take some time to enjoy the best of our planet. Not just the best athletes but the best yearnings of the human heart to be together and have fun and leave our animosities behind. Besides the gold medalists, the winners of this summer's Olympics will be all those who played their part to divert us from what makes us sad to what makes us happy, even if only for a while. Una Pausa Que Refresca Capture un par de escenas de la apertura de los Juegos Olímpicos de Verano de este año en Río. Fue colorido y di-vertido y un maravilloso alivio de gran parte de lo que hay en la televisión en estos días. Lo que realmente me lla-mó la atención fue la forma en que todo el mundo en el gran estadio Maracaná de Río de Janeiro celebraba dos co-sas a la vez: el tener una patria - grande o pequeña no importaba - y por ser parte de algo más grande que su propio país.

A pesar de las erupciones ocasionales de violencia, durante muchas décadas los Juegos Olímpicos han proporciona-do a los participantes y espectadores de todo el mundo una experiencia de cómo nuestro mundo podría verse si nos llevamos lo mejor de nosotros sobre un terreno de juego, en lugar de en un campo de batalla.

Viendo escenas de Río como la estatua del Cristo Redentor, donde se encendió la antorcha olímpica, y la playa de Copacabana, sentí que la conexión que tenemos cuando una parte remota del mundo tiene, aunque sólo sea por unos días o semanas, se convierten en algo cercano y real por nuestro ver y tocar y saborear de una manera cerca y personal. Como le escribí a usted acerca de mi reciente viaje, Brasil es una gran nación que lucha con la corrupción política, el crimen y la enfermedad. Sin embargo, el orgullo y la esperanza del pueblo brasileño deben sentir que ser capaz de mostrar al mundo un hermoso espectáculo. Los parabens! ¡Felicitaciones! al pueblo de Brasil por lo que están logrando en estos días, a pesar de su sufrimiento!

Naturalmente Tomé especial deleite en ver nuestro desfile de los atletas estadounidenses en el campo ovacionado por muchos. Uniformes de color rojo, blanco y azul, y el himno americano tocan nuestros corazones de una manera muy especial. Al mismo tiempo, no podía dejar de admirar e incluso deslumbrar por las banderas y trajes que repre-sentan las muchas otras naciones del mundo. Incluso los pequeños países, desconocido por la mayoría de nosotros y más pequeño que algunos de nuestros estados, podrían compartir cómodamente el centro de atención y atraer un fuerte aplauso. Esto es una cosa asombrosa. Estamos todos ahí para competir, hacer todo lo posible para llegar a la cima con medallas. Y sin embargo, este desfile alegre realmente transmite un mensaje diferente: la gente es grande y maravillosa sólo por ser quienes son, por ser fieles a lo que los marca y su cultura como única y hermosa a su ma-nera. Nadie tomó este desfile de las naciones con la intención de juzgar. Claro, tenemos nuestros favoritos, pero todos sabemos que esas cosas son cuestión de gustos y preferencias. A cada uno lo suyo.

Los deseos y oración del Papa Francisco deben ser nuestro propio mientras tomamos estas vacaciones de verano de un mundo en constante lucha y conflicto:

Me gustaría enviar un saludo especialmente cálido al pueblo brasileño, en particular, a la ciudad de Río de Janei-ro, que es la sede de los atletas y aficionados apasionados de todo el mundo con ocasión de los Juegos Olímpicos. A Pausa que Refresca Eu assisti algumas cenas da abertura dos Jogos Olímpicos de Verão deste ano no Rio. Estava tudo colorido e alegre, um maravilhoso alivio aos olhos por tudo que vemos na televisão nos dias de hoje. O que realmente me impressionou foi a forma que todos naquele enorme estádio do Maracanã, no Rio, estavam comemorando duas coisas ao mesmo tempo: em ter uma terra natal, grande ou pequena não importa, e em poder fazer parte de algo ainda maior que seu próprio país. Apesar das erupções ocasionais de violência, durante muitas décadas, as Olimpíadas proporcionaram aos participantes e telespectadores em todo o mundo uma experiência de como o nosso mundo poderia parecer, se nós trouxéssemos para esse mundo o melhor que podemos dar em um campo de jogo, em vez de em um campo de batalha. Assistindo cenas do Rio, como o Cristo Redentor, onde a tocha olímpica foi acesa, e a praia de Copacabana, senti a con-exão que temos quando uma parte remota do mundo tem que, mesmo que apenas por alguns dias ou semanas, ficar uni-da, e como isso pode tornar-se real quando sentimos isto de perto. Como escrevi aqui antes sobre minha recente viagem, o Brasil é uma grande nação lutando com a política, corrupção, crime e doenças. No entanto, como orgulhoso e esperançoso o povo brasileiro deve se sentir por ser capaz de mostrar ao mundo um belo espetáculo. Parabéns! Parabéns ao povo brasileiro pelo o que eles estão realizando nestes dias, apesar de passar por tanto sofrimento! Naturalmente eu senti um prazer especial em ver nossos atletas americanos desfilando e sendo aplaudidos por muitos. Seus uniformes vermelhos, brancos e azuis e a bandeira americana fez tocar nossos corações de uma maneira muito es-pecial. Ao mesmo tempo, eu não poderia deixar de admirar e até mesmo me deslumbrar com as bandeiras e trajes que representam as muitas outras nações do mundo. Até mesmo pequenos países, desconhecidos para a maioria de nós, e menor que alguns dos nossos Estados, puderam confortavelmente dividir o palco e tirar muitos aplausos. Isto é um coisa surpreendente! Estamos todos ali para competir, para fazer o nosso melhor e chegar ao topo com medalhas. No entanto, esse alegre des-file transmitiu uma mensagem diferente: as pessoas são grandes e maravilhosas apenas por ser quem elas são, por serem únicas, fiéis a sua cultura e belezas próprias. Ninguém assumiu, neste desfile das nações, a intenção de julgar. Claro, te-mos os nossos favoritos, mas todos sabemos que isto é questao de gosto e preferência de cada um. Os desejos e orações do Papa Francisco deveriam ser os nossos próprios: o de ter uma pausa neste verão das discórdias e constantes conflitos no mundo: “Eu gostaria de enviar uma especial e calorosa saudação ao povo brasileiro, em especial para a cidade do Rio de Janeiro, que está hospedando os atletas e fãs apaixonados de todo o mundo por ocasião das Olimpíadas. Em um mundo sedento de paz, tolerância e reconciliação, espero que o espírito do Jogos Olímpicos inspire todos os participantes e expectadores a "combater o bom combate" e terminar a corrida juntos (cf. 2 Tm 4,78), e que desejem obter como prêmio não uma medalha, mas algo muito mais precioso: a construção de uma civilização em que a solidariedade reine e baseie-se no reconhecimento que somos todos membros da mesma família humana, independentemente das diferenças de cultura, cor da pele ou religião. E a todos os brasileiros, que com sua alegria e hospitalidade costumeiras, organizaram a 'Festa do Esporte', espero que esta seja uma oportunidade para superar momentos difíceis e comprometerem-se a trabalhar como uma equipe na construção um país mais justo e seguro, apostando em um futuro cheio de esperança e alegria. Que Deus abençoe a todos.” (Papa Francisco) Tire algum tempo para desfrutar o melhor do nosso planeta, não apenas os melhores atletas, mas os melhores anseios do coração humano para estarmos juntos, nos divertir e deixar os nossos ressentimentos para trás. This summer the St. Vincent de Paul Society is once again sending children in need to day camp at the Peabody/Lynnfield YMCA.

These camperships were instituted in 1990 as a living memorial to Fr. Tom Ray. This summer camp experi-ence expands the horizons of children and provides a needed respite for parents.

It costs $350 to send a child to the Peabody/Lynnfield camp for two weeks. If you would like to help us pro-vide this camp experience for children, send your do-nation to Fr. Tom Ray Campership, c/o St. Vincent de Paul Society. Place your donation in the collection basket or mail it directly to the Parish Center. Papa Benedicto XVI sobre la conciencia

Como dice el Catecismo de la Iglesia católica, "la conciencia moral es un juicio de la razón por el que la persona humana reconoce la calidad moral de un acto concreto que piensa hacer, está haciendo o ha hecho. En todo lo que dice y hace, el hombre está obligado a seguir fielmente lo que sabe que es justo y recto" (n. 1778). Esta definición pone de manifiesto que la conciencia moral, para poder guiar rectamente la conducta humana, ante todo debe basarse en el sólido fun-damento de la verdad, es decir, debe estar ilu-minada para reconocer el verdadero valor de las acciones y la consistencia de los criterios de val-oración, de forma que sepa distinguir el bien del mal, incluso donde el ambiente social, el plural-ismo cultural y los intereses superpuestos no ayuden a ello. Deus lhe concedeu como a Virgem antes do parto, no parto e depois do parto, como a Mãe de Deus. Hoje, solenemente, celebramos o fato ocorrido na vida de Maria de Nazaré, proclamado co-mo dogma de fé, ou seja, uma verdade doutrinal, pois tem tudo a ver com o mistério da nos-sa salvação. Assim definiu pelo Papa Pio XII em 1950 através da Constituição Apostóli-ca Munificentissimus Deus: “A Imaculada Mãe de Deus, a sempre Virgem Maria, termina-do o curso da vida terrestre foi assunta em corpo e alma à glória celestial.” Antes, es-ta celebração, tanto para a Igreja do Oriente como para o Ocidente, chamava-se “Dormição”, porque foi sonho de amor. Até que se chegou ao de “Assunção de Nossa Sen-hora ao Céu”, isto significa que o Senhor reconheceu e recompensou com antecipada glorifi-cação todos os méritos da Mãe, principalmente alcançados em meio às aceitações e oferecimen-tos das dores. Maria contava com 50 anos quando Jesus subiu ao Céu. Tinha sofrido muito: as dúvidas do seu esposo, o abandono e pobreza de Belém, o desterro do Egito, a perda prematura do Filho, a separação no princípio do ministério público de Jesus, o ódio e perseguição das autoridades, a Paixão, o Calvário, a morte do Filho e, embora tan-to sofrimento, São Bernardo e São Francisco de Sales é quem nos aponta o amor pelo Fil-ho que havia partido como motivo de sua morte. É probabilíssima, e hoje bastante co-mum, a crença de a Santíssima Virgem ter morrido antes que se realizasse a dispersão dos Apóstolos e a perseguição de Herodes Agripa, no ano 42 ou 44. Teria então uns 60 anos de idade. A tradição antiga, tanto escrita como arqueológica, localiza a sua morte no Mon-te Sião, na mesma casa em que seu Filho celebrara os mistérios da Eucaristia e, em se-guida, tinha descido o Espírito Santo sobre os Apóstolos. Esta a fé universal na Igreja desde tempos remotíssimos. A Virgem Maria ressuscitou, como Jesus, pois sua alma imortal uniu-se ao corpo antes da corrupção tocar naquela carne virginal, que nunca tinha experimen-tado o pecado. Ressuscitou, mas não ficou na terra e sim imediatamente foi levan-tada ou tomada pelos anjos e colocada no palácio real da glória. Não subiu ao Céu, co-mo fez Jesus, com a sua própria virtude e poder, mas foi erguida por graça e privilégio, que Deus lhe concedeu como a Virgem antes do parto, no parto e depois do parto, como a Mãe de Deus. Pope Benedict on Conscience “The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us, ‘Conscience is a judgment of reason whereby the human person recognizes the moral quality of a concrete act that he is going to perform, is in the process of performing or has already completed. In all he says and does, man is obliged to follow faithfully what he knows to be just and right’ (n. 1778). From this definition it emerges that the moral conscience, to be able to judge human conduct rightly, above all must be based on the solid foundation of truth, that is, it must be enlightened to know the true value of actions and the solid criteria for evaluation. Therefore, it must be able to distinguish good from evil, even where the social environment, pluralistic culture and superimposed interests do not help it do so” (Address to the Pontifical Academy for Life, February 24, 2007).

St. John the Baptist School Thursday Playgroup for 2 Year Olds

September 15, 2016 St. John School is beginning our popular Thursday morning playgroup. Children must be 2 years on or before September 1st to be eligible. This will be held every Thursday in the school from 9:00-11:00a.m. A parent or guardian must stay with the child. The playgroup will run the entire school year at $10.00 per session. Each session will be limited. Sessions will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Snacks and a drink will be provided for your child. 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

When a teenager demanded that her parents treat her like an adult and not have so many rules to follow, they readily agreed. The next day, they presented her with a bill for rent, a list of items she needed to purchase, the list of chores she had to share and the insurance bill for her car. After looking over the list—the responsibilities of an adult—an early curfew on school nights did not seem so hard to follow. Adulthood and its expenses could wait a while longer!

Being prepared is more than just a motto for the Scouts. For most of us it is a way of life. We try to an-ticipate the future, setting goals and strategies to achieve them. This is true in our spiritual life. Our rela-tionship with God grows and changes over time and sometimes He asks us to do what we might not think we can do. Responding to a parish need or working to solve a community problem might not be our plan. Many times, people will hesitate or say no when they are asked to teach CCD, to be part of a marriage prep program, to find a way to support a missionary or to respond to a natural disaster. But God calls us in His own time and when He knows we are ready. He does not call us to failure. Listen and pray and trust in God. By Dr. Scott Hahn Consuming Fire Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle C) Our God is a consuming fire, the Scriptures tell us (see He-brews 12:29; Deuteronomy 4:24). And in this week’s Gospel, Jesus uses the image of fire to de-scribe the demands of discipleship. The fire he has come to cast on the earth is the fire that he wants to blaze in each of our hearts. He made us from the dust of the earth (see Genesis 2:7), and filled us with the fire of the Holy Spirit in baptism (see Luke 3:16). We were baptized into his death (see Romans 6:3). This is the baptism our Lord speaks of in the Gospel this week. The bap-tism with which He must be baptized is His passion and death, by which He accomplished our redemption and sent forth the fire of the Spirit on the earth (see Acts 2:3). The fire has been set, but it is not yet blazing. We are called to enter deeper into the consuming love of God. We must exam-ine our consciences and our actions, submitting ourselves to the revaling fire of God’s Word (see 1 Corinthians 3:13). In our struggle against sin, we have not yet resisted to the point of shedding our own blood, Paul tells us in this week’s Epistle. We have not undergone the suffering that Jeremiah suffers in the First Reading this week. But this is what true discipleship requires. To be a disciple is to be inflamed with the love of the God. It is to have an un-quenchable desire for holiness and zeal for the salvation of our brothers and sisters. Being His disciple does not bring peace in the false way that the world proclaims peace (see Jeremiah 8:11). It means divi-sion and hardship. It may bring us to conflict with our own flesh and blood. But Christ is our peace (see Ephesians 2:14). By his cross, he has lifted us up from the mire of sin and death—as he will rescue the prophet Jeremiah (see Jeremiah 38:10). Youth Ministry Service Opportunities Many High School programs, and National Honor Societies require volunteer hours for students. Over the summer a students parish is a wonderful place to volunteer and earn easy hours.
