OUR LADY OF MERCY PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Our Lady of Mercy Parish is a Catholic community that worships God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, celebrating Mass, proclaiming the Gospel Message and uniting in prayer. We strive to welcome all and to educate ourselves and others in the Good News of Jesus Christ. We support one another in times of joy and sadness and attempt to serve each other by reaching out to those in need in our community and beyond. We are imperfect people on a journey. Tithing is God’s plan to support His Church. Full tithing means 10% of gross income to God. We ask half of this, or 5%, for your Parish church. The other 5% goes to your favorite charities.

“….while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith. For the sake of the joy that lay before him, he endured the cross, despising its shame, and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:2 Setting priorities is the key to balancing everyday demands made on us with the limited amounts of time, talent, and treasure we possess. When we accept Jesus as our priority, we do not squander our gifts.

THE MIRACULOUS MEDAL NOVENA will be recited each Saturday in the Sacred Heart Chapel immediately following the 8:30AM Mass.
THE FAMILY OF GOD meets Tuesday at 7:30PM in the Chapel to praise God and pray for special intentions.
DAUGHTERS OF MARY meets Thursday mornings at 9:30AM in the Chapel.
THE ROSARY SOCIETY will attend the 8:30AM Mass on the first Saturday of the month, followed by recitation of the Rosary.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, In the news last week was the disturbing result of a PEW Research survey that showed that only 31% of all US Catholics (and only 26% of those under forty) be-lieve in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, while many believe the Eucharist is simply “symbolic” of Christ. Both this fact and its causes are troubling on so many levels!
We live in a time where transcendent things are not valued. A time in which the idea that something could be “true always” is impossible. A time in which many people are “spiritual” but do not seek or expect to find a personal God with whom there could be an intimate relationship. However at the heart of our faith is the unchanging, always-true fact of Jesus’ Incarnation – His coming into the world as one of us in all things but sin – so that He could and would suffer and die for those sins in order to open back up our path to Eternal Life in heaven, and then be Resurrected on the third day. It is in fact the experience of the Sacraments in the Church, and most especially the Eucharist, that is the most intimate encounter with our very personal and living God – so intimate that Jesus gives us His very Self – Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity – every time we receive Communion. This is the “Real Presence” that many do not grasp; not something that merely “reminds us” of Jesus! Brothers and sister, this above all is our urgent task: if you yourself are ambivalent or in doubt about these central gifts that Jesus gives to us, then it is essential to go deeper, to seek, to study, to read and especially, to pray! Not to “prescind” from faith, but rather from within the faith to pray intensely to Jesus for a deeper faith! Likewise, to engage this topic openly with your children, your family, your friends. Here is your homework assignment, and I pray you will take it up with seriousness by following the links below for: 1) an article on the PEW survey1; 2) an excellent article by one of my former students in Rome: “Jesus: Our Friend and Our Food”2; and 3) an excellent 6 mi-nute video by Bishop Robert Barron, “Catholics Misun-derstanding the Eucharist,”2 which really serves as a clarion call to us all. SACRED HEART CHAPEL Renovation Project Thanks to a handful of generous donors we have refur-bished the altar, ambo and tabernacle stand with mar-ble; and a new tabernacle. We also plan to improve the lighting and install a sound system. Additional funds are needed to complete the entire project. CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Adult and teen volunteers are needed for the OLM religious education program. Our program includes children in grades K-6 and meets once a week from October to March. Volunteers are given all the support and materials needed for their success. Please consider providing your time and talent to the wonderful children in our parish community. NURSES NEEDED FOR OUR RELGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM Our religious education program meets for one-hour on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the months of October thru March. We are in need of a licensed nurse that can volunteer on any of those days from 4:00-5:00 PM for any medical needs that might arise with our children. ATTENTION 7th and 8th graders—You are invited to participate in our summer Movie Retreat evening, on Au-gust 22nd from 7-10:30PM in the Lower Gathering Space, featuring The LEGO Movie! During the month of August we encourage all parishioners to consider becoming involved in one of our many choirs in the Music Ministry. There are op-portunities for Adult Choir, Children's Choir, Handbells and Teen singers and instrumentalists. You do not have to be a trained singer or formally trained musician to become a member. Please consider taking an ac-tive role in leading the sung prayer of our parish by becoming involved. SOCIAL JUSTICE & PEACE MINISTRY NEWS “May we learn to love the other, the stranger, as our-selves”. Pope Francis’s message directed to the world regard-ing refugees and the displaced. Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley is a humanitarian response to this directive. Sr. Norma Pimentel, M.J. is the Executive Director of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley (Diocese of Brownsville, Texas). Pope Francis has nationally rec-ognized and blessed the efforts of Sr. Pimentel. In addition to her many responsibilities, Sr. Norma heads the Humanitarian Respite Center at the U.S. border in McAllen, Texas. The center welcomes asylum seekers as they cross the border into the United States. The Center provides a place for countless men, women, children and infant refugees to rest, have a warm meal, a shower and change into clean clothes as well as re-ceive medicine and other supplies before continuing on their journey. AMAZON WISH LIST is one way parishioners can do-nate to Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley (CCRGV) and help Sr. Pimentel provide for the immi-grants that come to the center. WOMEN’S CREATIVE GROUP Thursday, September 5th— Parish Center 7-9PM Come be creative with us! The Women's Creative Group is a place for women of our parish to come and work on their craft projects: doodling, scrapbooking, knitting, counted cross stitch and more. Take time from your busy schedule to let your creative juices flow! Bring your current project or, if you would like to learn something new, come and see what other women are working on.
