NEWS & HIGHLIGHTSSTREET DATE: OCTOBER 14, 2014
Our top release for October is a recording of early Italian Baroque music featuring violinist Rachel Podger (p.7). Continuing in the Baroque vein, harmonia mundi’s key releases include Maurice Steger playing recorder concertos by Vivaldi (p.11), acclaimed countertenor Lawrence Zazzo singing arias by Handel, Bononcini and Ariosti (p.9) and new artists Pygmalion performing J.S. Bach’s little-known Köthener Trauermusik (p.10). Hyperion’s star ensemble Polyphony returns to the music of Arvo Pärt for their second album of the Estonian composer’s choral works (p.17). Piano fans have much to celebrate this month. Bach expert Angela Hewitt offers a recording of The Art of Fugue (p.15), Andreas Staier continues his survey of the music of Schumann (p.8) and Denis Kozhukhin plays sonatas by Haydn (p.25). Also, volume 64 of Hyperion’s Romantic Piano Concerto series features music by Oswald and Napoloão (p.19) and Maria João Pires plays the Schumann concerto on a set launching Sir John Eliot Gardiner’s Mendelssohn symphony cycle for LSO Live (p.21). October’s wealth of concerto recordings also includes Jack Liebeck playing Bruch on volume 17 of the Romantic Violin Concerto series (p.18). Valery Gergiev leads the LSO in Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique (p.22) and the Mariinsky Orchestra on an opulent DVD and Blu-ray set of Prokofiev’s ballet Romeo and Juliet (p.23). In non-classical releases, Afrobeat legend Tony Allen makes his Jazz Village début with Film of Life, an album that features a cameo from rocker Damon Albarn (p.33), and quirky French band Lo’Jo returns with a special set celebrating their fascinating 35 year career (p.34).

Matthias Goerne’s Schubert WinterreiseMatthias Goerne’s highly acclaimed series of Schubert lieder recordings concludes with a powerful account of Winterreise. The mood here is tense, urgent, even harrowing. This winter landscape expects no spring to come. In the intimate atmosphere of this recording, more than in concert, Goerne’s path to oblivion finds its echo in our innermost selves. Pianist Christoph Eschenbach provides superb accompaniment.

IMPORT Delphian presents Christmas with the Shepherds - a unique album from Rory McCleery and The Marian Consort that illuminates a little-known and fascinating musical connection. Jean Mouton’s 1515 motet Quaeramus cum pastoribus was hugely popular
with the public and fellow composers alike. This disc features works that were inspired by this hit tune, including a mass by Cristóbal de Morales and the world première recording of a motet to the same text by Annibale Stabile.
IMPORTIt was with typical discernment that Geoffrey Webber, director of the Choir of Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge, responded to a request to put together his dream Christmas collection. Opening with Jan Sandström’s sublime
deconstruction of Es ist ein Ros entsprungen, Webber’s classy choir reveals and delights in equal measure, finding space for both the Venetian lushness of Gabrieli and the distilled purity of Webern in a seasonal collection which is also sprinkled with unexpected gems of more recent provenance.

IMPORTLaurence Cummings leads the FestspielOrchester Göttingen and a cast of superb soloists in a performance of Handel’s opera Faramondo. The work was first performed in London in 1738. There were only eight performances and
it was never revived during the composer’s lifetime. The first modern production was in Halle in 1976, and several recordings have been made. Its convoluted plot is a story of revenge, intrigues, love and jealousy, backed by some of Handel’s most sublime music.
IMPORTCzech soprano Hana Blažíková is one of the most exciting voices in the baroque music scene today. Her new solo recording Vienna 1709 focuses on arias from operas and oratorios that were composed in Vienna during the first two decades of the 18th
century. It includes works by Fux, Ariosti and Bononcini. Conductor and viol soloist Petr Wagner and Ensemble Tourbillon provide able support for Blažíková and her clear, angelic soprano voice - which is capable of both great virtuosity and delicate sensitivity.

DOMESTIC SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & 3-channel/ DSDAnalogue Productions presents two more titles in their series of SACD remasters of RCA Living Stereo recordings. On the first, Fritz Reiner leads the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in Prokofiev’s suite from Lieutenant Kijé and Stravinsky’s Song of the Nightingale. On The Reiner Sound he leads the CSO in orchestral music by Rachmaninov and Ravel. As with all the discs in this series, these SACD releases were sourced from original session tapes that were carefully restored and remastered by Sterling Sound. The sound is clearer than the original LPs and warmer and richer than any previous CD version.

IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDViolinist Rachel Podger’s Perla Barocca, which features works by ten key composers of the 17th Century, showcases eleven sublime examples of early Italian Baroque chamber music. Some of these composers dominated the repertory; others left behind only a handful of works. Here, they come together to convey the diverse musical landscape at an excitingly rich and creative point in history. Podger is supported by harpsichordist and organist Marcin žwižtkiewicz and Daniele Caminiti on theorbo.

IMPORTThis third volume of Andreas Staier’s series devoted to the piano music of Robert Schumann begins with his first published composition, the Abegg Variations, and ends with his very last work, posthumously published Geistervariationen. The road he traveled between the two works was a long one, yet this program also brings out the consistency of the poetic urge that gives Schumann’s music its matchless powers of evocation.

IMPORTWhen Leopold of Anhalt-Cöthen died in 1728, his former Kapellmeister had not forgotten the five brilliant years he had spent in the prince’s service. He wrote a cantata dedicated to his memory based on the music of two major works of the mid 1720s - the Trauer-Ode and the St. Matthew Passion. Although the score to the Köthener Trauermusik is lost, the wordbook and other sources of information have now made it possible to create a performing edition. In his first recording for harmonia mundi, Raphaël Pichon leads the ensemble Pygmalion in a rediscovery of this little-known work.

IMPORTIt may come as a surprise to some that the violin was not the most frequently played instrument in the early 18th century: that distinction belongs to the recorder. Vivaldi was among the composers most sensitive to the instrument’s complex identity, as he shows in his concertos for recorder. On this disc, acclaimed virtuoso Maurice Steger offers highly impressive versions of such popular works as La pastorella, Il gardellino, and the evergreen La notte.

IMPORTStephen Layton and Polyphony have a special relationship with the music of Arvo Pärt. The extraordinary purity of Polyphony’s singing is the perfect vehicle for music of such clean, elemental simplicity, such cathartic calm. Their recording of Triodion and other choral works won a Gramophone Award and became a cult classic. The selections on this album span nearly five decades — from 1963 to 2012. A range of biblical texts are set alongside ancient prayers, and the works feature several different languages.

IMPORTPortuguese virtuoso Artur Pizarro makes a welcome return to the Romantic Piano Concerto series with works by two brilliant pianist-composers. The Brazilian Henrique Oswald and the Portuguese Alfredo Napoleão were born in the same year, less than three months apart. Both were child prodigies who became concert pianists, pedagogues and composers. Oswald’s Piano Concerto dates from about 1886. Although influences of Fauré can be detected, its overall character owes more to the late Romantic German style. Napoleão’s Piano Concerto No.2 is undated but was probably composed around the same time as Oswald’s. Pizarro is only the third pianist to champion this spectacular work.

IMPORT Twenty-year-old clarinetist Raphaël Sévère, blessed with a magnificent technique and glowing tone, is featured on this album of chamber music by Brahms. He is joined by pianist Adam Laloum, whose previous release on Mirare already explored
Brahmsian twilights. Together they demonstrate that, in the burnished autumnal colors of the Clarinet Sonatas, the composer chose the instrument to bid a melancholy farewell to the world. Cellist Victor Julien-Laferrière joins the duo for the elegiac Clarinet Trio.
IMPORT The first woman to win the Warsaw Chopin Competition since Martha Argerich in 1965, Yulianna Avdeeva presents her first solo recording, featuring three major works of the concert repertoire. From Schubertian reverie to the diabolical energy of
Prokofiev by way of the implacable trajectory of the passion of Chopin’s Preludes, her composer of predilection, the youthful Avdeeva deploys a sensational piano technique coupled with a vivid, expressive and poetic palette.

In the selection here, the worlds of gallant classical style rub shoulders with sturm und drang, and listeners can appreciate the influence Haydn clearly had upon his wayward and headstrong young pupil Beethoven.

made forays into pop, French chanson, world music and film scores. This innovative percussionist, known to his peers as “the wizard,” presents his first solo album, entitled In-Pulse. On it, Navarre’s quartet radiates with his luminous brilliance.
IMPORTFile in: JazzFrench saxophonist Sylvain Rifflet’s music goes far beyond jazz, taking in experimental rock and contemporary music of all sorts. In this daring multimedia project, conceived in collaboration with
fellow saxophonist Jon Irabagon, Rifflet breathes new life into the art and spirit of Moondog, a revered New York composer, musician and poet who inspired the likes of Charlie Parker, Allen Ginsberg and Philip Glass. DOMESTICFile in: SoundtrackHowe Records presents Howard Shore’s complete scores to the films Crash, Dead Ringers and Naked Lunch all newly remastered and containing material not previously released. The 1996 film Crash is a Canadian-British psychological thriller film written and directed by David Cronenberg based on J. G. Ballard’s 1973 novel of the same name. It tells the story of a group of people who take sexual pleasure from car accidents. Shore’s music for Crash is among those truly rare times when a film composer and his subject mesh perfectly. The 1988 thriller Dead Ringers starred Jeremy Irons in a dual role as identical twin gynecologists. Cronenberg co-wrote the screenplay with Norman Snider. Naked Lunch is a 1991 science fiction drama film written and directed by Cronenberg and starring Peter Weller, Judy Davis, Ian Holm, and Roy Scheider. It is a film adaptation of William S. Burroughs’s 1959 novel of the same name. Howard Shore again masters the mood with this foray into the seamy underworld of Burroughs.
