Por Meu Cante – the literal meaning of the title is “Through My Singing” – was recorded live and released in Portugal in 2004 to immediate critical acclaim. Today, in hindsight, this album reveals not only an outstanding singer, but also the key infl uences at the core of António Zambujo’s unique style: the cante of Alentejo (polyphonic singing from southern Portugal), Brazilian music and West Coast cool jazz. Zambujo further refi ned this blend in the albums that followed, Outro sentido (2008) and Guia (2010).

In June, harmonia mundi presents the eagerly anticipated release of Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations (p.5) played by the magnifi cent English pianist Paul Lewis. Other priorities include Iván Fischer leading the Budapest Festival Orchestra in Schubert’s Symphony No. 9 on Channel Classics (p.8) and Hyperion’s new disc of choral music by Herbert Howells (p.13) with the Winchester Cathedral Choir under new director Andrew Lumsden. Also, Katia and Marielle Labèque return with a disc of American music for KML Records and PBO presents a disc of Haydn symphonies with Nicholas McGegan leading the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra (p.20). Worthy of special note are two DVD releases — Handel’s Belshazzar on harmonia mundi (p.4) and Lully’s Armide on FRA Musica (p.9) — and the debut of two new labels — Piano Classics (p.21) and Retrospective Revival (p.25). In non-classical priorities, African blues legend Boubacar Traoré offers Mali Denhou (p.30) — his fi rst new album in six years — and Tuareg desert-blues band Terakaft presents their second album for World Village, entitled Aratan N Azawad (p.31). Other highlights include four more SACD remasters from APO featuring original masters from Impulse (p.35).

Please note: promotional copies are available for priority titles ONLY

Valery Gergiev triumphed at this year’s BBC Music Magazine Awards with his stunning recording of Prokofi ev’s Romeo and Juliet. IMPORTPreviously Available as HMC 901813 (794881719723) Deleted December 2007Performance with solo voices has become the trademark of Cantus Cölln. In this recording of Bach’s B minor Mass it should not be seen as a dogmatic position, but rather as an alternative style of interpretation. It allows the often extremely complicated contrapuntal web of Bach’s polyphonic style to be presented with great clarity, illuminating many passages that are usually drowned in generalized sonic exhilaration. In such movements as the “Et incarnatus” and “Crucifi xus” the personal emotional statement becomes much more individual and striking. What is more, the altered performing conditions result in new, unexpected and surprising balances and sonorities.

IMPORTPreviously Available as HMC 901858 (794881767229) Deleted June 2005When it was fi rst performed in 1910, Mahler’s eighth symphony received a highly enthusiastic reception. In many ways, this composition, which he considered his magnum opus, takes up where Beethoven’s ninth left off nearly a century before. Scored for an eight-part double choir, boys’ choir, eight soloists and a huge orchestra including organ, the work gained its nickname “The Symphony of a Thousand” as indeed, 1,004 performers took part in its Munich premiere. In this recording led by Kent Nagano, the symphony’s rich drama and fervid passion are revealed as never before.

René Jacobs is masterful leading a stellar cast of soloists, the RIAS-Kammerchor and the Akademie für Al te

Musik in a spectacular production of Handel’s oratorio Belshazzar. Written in 1745, Belshazzar stands with Messiah as one of Handel’s fi nest efforts in the genre. Based on a libretto by Charles Jennens, the story, from the book of Daniel, recounts the fall of Babylon at the hands of the Persian prince Cyrus who brought Belshazzar’s tyrannical reign to an end — an eternally relevant story with signifi cant current resonance. Featured soloists include countertenor Bejun Mehta, a rising star in the world’s opera houses and concert halls.

IMPORTBeethoven’s 33 Variations on a waltz by Anton Diabelli was completed in 1823. Alfred Brendel has described it as, “the greatest of all piano works” and in his textbook Structura l Funct ions of Harmony, Arnold Schoenberg writes that, “in respect of its harmony, it deserves to be called the most adventurous work by Beethoven.” The piece was composed after Diabelli, a well-known music publisher and composer, sent his waltz to all the important composers of the Austrian Empire, asking each of them to write a variation on it. His plan was to publish all the variations in an anthology to benefi t orphans and widows of the Napoleonic Wars. Upon hearing Beethoven’s submission, Diabelli proclaimed that it was, “a great and important masterpiece, worthy to be ranked with the imperishable creations of the old Classics and to occupy a place beside Sebastian Bach’s famous masterpieces of the same type.” On this eagerly anticipated release, Paul Lewis, protégé of Alfred Brendel, brings his sharp intellect and remarkable technique to bear on this towering masterwork of the period.

IMPORTIn late 17th century Venice, a trinity of highly talented composers — Rosenmüller, Legrenzi and Stradella — enjoyed fl ourishing careers. They were men whose lives were bound together by fame and persecution as well as peerless musicians whose innovative, passionate compositions were uniquely complementary. On this new disc featuring Sonatas and Sinfonias by this remarkable trio of maestri, Manfredo Kraemer leads his group The Rare Fruits Council in performances that illuminate the virtuosity and tenderness of their compositional art.

IMPORTPrize winning French soprano Karen Vourc’h is joined here by accompanist Susan Manoff for Till Solveig…, a delightful recital disc featuring songs by Grieg, Sibelius, Rangström and Debussy. Vourc’h is a student of Christa Ludwig and has an active career on the operatic stage. She has appeared as Musetta at the Opéra de Monaco, Mélisande at the Opéra Comique and in the title role in Saariaho’s new opera Émilie. A special highlight of this disc is Vourc’h’s seductive interpretation of Debussy’s passionate Chansons de Bilitis.

IMPORTOver the years, Bach’s Cello Suites have become a monument to which all cellists pay homage. Though some of the greats waited until late in their careers to record them, (Casals, Rostropovich), others have recorded several versions (Yo-Yo Ma and Pieter Wispelwey two, Janos Starker three). Ophélie Gaillard is among the latter group. Her fi rst recording earned international praise and a French Classical Music Award. Ten years later, she revisits Bach’s masterworks — performing on a cello made in 1737 by Matteo Goffriller, a contemporary of the composer.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDPrize-winning harpist Lavinia Meijer’s third CD for Channel Classics brings together popular Fantasies and Impromptus by Spohr, Fauré, Pierné, Saint-Saëns, Roussel and Glière. Added to these are world premiere recordings of works by two completely forgotten composers for the instrument, Johannes Snoer (1868-1936) and Gabriel Verdalle (1845-1912). Meijer’s fl uid technique and keen musicality are heard to great effect here and Channel’s superb multi-channel sonics add an unmatched level of clarity to the production.

IMPORTACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThe partnership between Iván Fischer and his Budapest Festival Orchestra has proved to be one of the greatest success stories in classical music. On their latest recording for Channel Classics, these great artists present a new perspective on Schubert’s powerful and romantic ninth symphony. As a contrast to the majestic sounds of the Great C Major, Fischer’s pairing is a charming early work, the Five German Dances. As usual, Channel provides masterful sonic engineering that compliments the performers’ consummate musicality.

Twenty-four years a g o , W i l l i a m Christie and Les Arts Florissants premièred Jean-Baptiste Lully’s opera Atys at the Opéra Comique in Paris. It was a smashing success, and marked a pivotal moment in the history of period performance practice. Christie became a tireless champion of the music of Lully and helped rehabilitate the composer’s once stodgy reputation. In Armide, the “tragédie en musique” (a genre that Lully and his librettist Quinault jointly invented) reaches its peak of emotional and musical expression. Robert Carsen’s highly acclaimed 2008 production of Armide at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées rekindled interest in French Baroque music. On this new video from FRA Musica, fi lmed at the Château de Versailles, Carsen and stage director Jean-Claude Gallotta present an opulent and powerful vision of Lully’s poignant masterpiece.

IMPORTDon Giovanni is one of Mozart’s most popular operas. Its rich characterizations, intense drama and tragic humor combine in a perfect blend, offering entertainment and thought-provoking social commentary in equal measure. Maestro Zubin Mehta has received broad acclaim for his previous recordings of the composers’ operas. This new live set from Helicon, recorded in Tel Aviv’s Mann Auditorium in 2009, is like a force of nature. The quality of both the vocalists and orchestra heighten the mythical power and the musical beauty that are the hallmarks of Don Giovanni.

IMPORTBrahms is one of Maestro Zubin Mehta’s favorite composers. During the fi fty years that he has been the music director of the Israel Philharmonic, Mehta has included the famed German composer’s works in countless concert programs. These performances of the fi rst and third symphonies were recorded live in concert in 2009. The orchestra sounds warm and the performances are alive with the beauty of the music. Mehta’s tempi for both symphonies feel just right — not too fast in the outer movements, and not to sluggish or drawn out in the slower sections.

IMPORTHerbert Blomstedt is a regular (and very welcome) guest conductor of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. Best known to US audiences from his ten-year tenure with the San Francisco Symphony, Blomstedt currently holds the position of Honorary Conductor with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, the Swedish Radio Symphony and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. Under his baton, these symphonies by Mozart and Dvorák, recorded live in 2005, receive treatments full of elegance, charm, brilliance and joy.

IMPORTFor over three decades, the acclaimed pianist Yefi m Bronfman has been a regular guest with the Israel Philharmonic. The deep friendship between Bronfman, Zubin Mehta and the IPO makes itself felt in these wonderful performances captured in concert — the Saint-Saëns from 1991 and the Brahms from 2009. Bronfman sculpts the Brahms concerto with great bravura and a burnished tone, coupled with a depth of expression and seemingly effortless virtuosity. In both concerti, Maestro Mehta provides the soloist with the ideal orchestral support.

IMPORTThe monumental Piano Sonata in D minor was composed by a young Benjamin Dale while he was still a student at the Royal Academy of Music. Dale’s contemporaries included the composer-pianists Arnold Bax and York Bowen. Dale dedicated the sonata to his close friend Bowen, who gave the premiere of the work at the Academy in February 1905 and astonished listeners with its daring structural originality, thematic integrity and breathtaking tonal colors. Also featured here are Dale’s charming Prunella and Night Fancies in which the composer explores impressionistic colorings. Rather aptly, the fi nal work on the disc is the fi rst recording of York Bowen’s Miniature Suite in C major, the “Humoresque” of which is dedicated reciprocally to Dale. His expressive sensibility and remarkable dexterity make young British pianist Danny Driver the ideal advocate for this repertoire.

IMPORTHyperion’s recordings with the Winchester Cathedral Choir a re among the brightest jewels in the label’s choral music catalog. Led by the choir’s new director of music, Andrew Lumsden, this disc features a composer who was at the center of the English twentieth-century choral tradition. Herbert Howells, a unique and distinctive voice in church music, is best known for his lyrical compositions of the 1940s and 50s including the celebrated anthem Like as the Hart. However, Howells’ unjustly neglected late works are equal in beauty and intensity and it is these works that are featured on this superb recording. The Winchester Service, written in 1969, has its roots in plainchant and demonstrates the sophistication and depth of the composer’s harmonic palette. The choir displays a clear affi nity with the composer, performing with sensitivity and precision and producing a glorious sound that is quintessentially English.

IMPORTThis latest release from the award-winning partnership of Gerald Finley and Julius Drake features the ballad — a literary and musical form that inspired the greatest voices of German Romanticism. This disc contains some of the greatest examples of the form, including Schubert’s Erlkönig, as well as some fascinating and lesser-known works. Gerald Finley’s unrivalled gift for characterization and story telling makes him the ideal performer of these works.

IMPORTThis sensational new release from cellist Alban Gerhardt recaptures the novelty of the much-loved encores performed by Pablo Casals. Casals, one of the world’s greatest cellists, had a vast repertoire of encores that were adored by his audiences. The disc features transcriptions of works by composers including Fauré, Chopin, Saint-Saëns, Popper, Boccherini and Wagner. Gerhardt performs these miniature masterworks with extraordinary fi nesse and verve and is intelligently partnered and perfectly matched by pianist Cecile Licad in her Hyperion debut.

IMPORTJames MacMillan is renowned for his highly original yet accessible choral music. His prolifi c output displays an intrinsic understanding of the human voice and his music will undoubtedly stand the test of time. MacMillan’s work is inseparable from its composer’s committed adherence to Roman Catholicism. A sense of this religious belief imbues much of his work, which seeks to combine the sacred with the everyday. This disc highlights the astonishing variety prevalent in his music, from the powerful and stylistically complex Magnifi cat and Nunc dimittis to the beautiful and intimate On Love composed in Macmillan’s student days for the wedding of close friends. Wells Cathedral Choir is in fi ne voice and they tackle the more challenging works with aplomb and conviction. With their sensitive interpretations and luminous sound, it is easy to see why they have been labeled England’s fi nest cathedral choir.

IMPORTKatia and Marielle Labèque present an inspired and uplifting program of American music for two pianos that marks the duo’s return to repertoire they pioneered in the 1980s. The Labèques’ innovative interpretation for Phillips of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue launched a stellar international career and was one of the fi rst gold records in classical music. This new release from KML Records features the sisters’ new look at Gershwin’s immortal Rhapsody coupled with Irwin Kostal’s arrangement of music from Leonard Bernstein’s beloved musical West Side Story. Kostal penned the original orchestration of West Side Story and his work won both an Oscar® and a GRAMMY® Award.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDIn 2009, LSO Live released an acclaimed recording of Haydn’s Die Schöpfung (The Creation) conducted

by Sir Colin Davis. This month, Sir Colin returns to the music of Haydn with a superb cast of young singers for his later oratorio Die Jahreszeiten (The Seasons). Following the success of Die Schöpfung, which had swiftly gained popularity throughout Europe, Haydn’s librettist Baron Gottfried van Swieten suggested another project, based on James Thomson’s pastoral epic, The Seasons. One of Haydn’s last major works, Die Jahreszeiten is music of thrilling vitality and creativity, depicting the yearly cycle of life in the countryside through the eyes of three peasants. Sir Colin’s recent LSO Live release of Nielsen symphonies received an Editor’s Choice in Gramophone and was a BBC Music Magazine Choice of the Month.

IMPORTThis special multimedia project from Paradizo illustrates the encounter between an artist and an exceptional venue. The Temple de la Musique Ancienne was the fi rst center of performance and learning for the harpsichord and for Baroque music to be created in the twentieth century. This project commemorates Wanda Landowska’s vital impact on music making between the years 1927 and 1940. This museum quality publication, featuring Paradizo’s elegant packaging and presentation, includes recordings and documents witnessing one of the most important projects of the entire harpsichord revival and early music movement.

Led by Music Director Nicholas McGegan since 1985, Philharmonia Baroque is recognized as one of the fi nest chamber orchestras, as well as one of the most exciting period-instrument ensembles, in the country. Piano Classics — A label for the piano connoisseur

First announced at the MIDEM conference in January, the début releases on the new classical label Piano Classics are now available in the US. Specializing in classic piano recordings of the past and present, the label’s goal is to build a comprehensive ‘piano library’ covering the widest possible range of repertoire. Piano Classics is the brainchild of established industry fi gures

Pieter van Winkel and Jeremy Elliott who were all too aware that important recordings by respected artists were languishing in archives with no possible access for music lovers. Staying specialist gives the label greater focus. As Pieter van Winkel explains, “In today’s diffi cult market, specialization is everything. To know your customer, and to offer what he/she is interested in is our ultimate goal.

We offer the piano connoisseur a ‘delicatessen’ label made for and made by people who are passionate about piano.” The label’s initial release features recordings by Nicolai Lugansky, Bruno Leonardo Gelber and Artur Pizarro. Future releases include celebrations of the Liszt Bicentenary with special edition double albums of the great Liszt interpreters including Jorge Bolet, Alfred Brendel, Sviatoslav Richter, Boris Berezovsky and Earl Wild. In addition to these classic archive recordings, Piano Classics will also offer brand new recordings by exciting young and established talents such as Lukas Geniusas, Katia Skanavi, Naum Grubert and Klára Würtz.

IMPORTNikolai Lugansky , now a household name on the international concert stages, began his recording career in his early twenties for the label Vanguard Classics. This Rachmaninoff recital contains a lyrical and transparent performance of the famous second sonata, several song transcriptions, the well known Corelli Variations and a hair-raising performance of Rachmaninov’s transcription of Mendelssohn’s “Scherzo” from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Lugansky, hailed by his teacher Tatiana Nikolaeva as “the next one,” has enjoyed an impressive career, and now performs with the world’s most famous orchestras and conductors.

Jörg Demus’ landmark recording of Franck piano works from the 1970s captures the great Austrian pianist at the height of his insightful powers. In performances of great tonal fi nesse, Demus illuminates the complex harmonic language of this beautiful romantic music. Winner of the 1987 Leeds competition, Russian virtuoso Vladimir Ovchinnikov offers up staggering performances of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and Shostakovich’s fi rst Piano Concerto. The talented Portuguese pianist Artur Pizarro gives full blooded and highly athletic performances of Kabalevsky’s three Piano Sonatas. Among the fi nest keyboard works of the 1940s, these are works of stature, rich with intense lyricism and rhythmic vigor and an almost symphonic scope.

Argentinean virtuoso Bruno-Leonardo Gelber has been a fi xture in concert halls and recording studios ever since his dramatic performance of the Schumann concerto with Lorin Maazel in 1957 at age 15. This superb reissue of Gelber’s 1992 Denon recording of Brahms’ third piano sonata, engineered by the great Peter Willemoës, features performances that range from infi nite delicacy to amazing technical wizardry. George Crumb is one of the foremost composers of the American avant-garde. Belgian pianist Robert Groslot is heard here in Crumb’s two-volume series Makrokosmos (a parallel to Bartók’s Microkosmos). Evgeny Koroliov’s recording of the Goldberg Variations has become a bit of a cult recording. Composer György Ligeti chose Koroliov’s Bach as his desert island disc, proclaiming that, “forsaken and dying of thirst, I would listen to it up till my last breath.”

Founded in 1989, Collins Classics grew to become a signifi cant British Independent label, but sadly closed its doors in 1998. Key British artists such as the composer Sir Peter Maxwell Davies,

pianist Joanna McGregor and Harry Christophers, founder and conductor of The Sixteen, reacquired their respective catalogues following the closure of Collins. However there remains a treasure trove of nearly 130 fabulous classical recordings that have not seen the light of day for nigh on twelve years. The goal of the new Retrospective Revival label is to reissue these gems

IMPORTComposed in the 1940s, these symphonies find Vaughan Williams at his creative zenith. The fi fth draws on infl uences from the opera The Pilgrim’s Progress whilst the sixth owes its dramatic fl avor to the composer’s fi lm and incidental scores. Both works on this Collins Classics reissue are performed by The Academy of Saint Martin-In-The-Fields led by Sir Neville Marriner. These superb artists need no introduction. They are among the most accomplished performers of English music of the 20th century.

Tchaikovsky’s spectacular Manfred Symphony dates from 1885, composed between the fourth and fi fth symphonies. The great Yuri Simonov conducts the London Symphony Orchestra in this much-acclaimed recording from 1989. By coincidence, Bartók and Kodály wrote works entitled Concerto for Orchestra. Both works are heard here performed by the great Rafael Frübeck de Burgos conducting the London Symphony Orchestra. In a particularly welcome reissue, the great Sibelian Sir Alexander Gibson conducts the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in an attractive coupling of the second symphony and the popular Karelia Suite.

This truly fascinating recording pairs Arnold Schönberg’s arrangement of the Brahms Piano Quartet in G minor with Ottorino Respighi’s orchestration of Rachmaninov’s Cinq Études- Tableaux. Both works show the infl uence of arranger and orchestrator whilst maintaining the balance and integrity of the original works. This fascinating reissue from Retrospective Revival features Gennady Rozhdestvensky conducting the London Philharmonic. Described by Hans Richter as, “the greatest symphony of modern times,” Elgar’s fi rst has been established in the concert repertoire for over one hundred years. It is paired here with In The South, a gloriously expansive tone poem based on Elgar’s time in Italy in the early 1900’s. Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of Saint Martin-in-the-Fields offer up outstanding performances of these key Elgar works.

More English music is featured on Salvatore Accardo’s disc of Elgar and Walton concertos accompanied by Richard Hickox and the London Symphony Orchestra. Johanna Martzy’s solo Bach has acquired iconic status. Deploying the sturdy rhythm and glowing tone that are features of all her recordings, she gives balanced, middle-of-the-road interpretations, unhurried and free of self-indulgence. The three original LPs were well received on both sides of the Atlantic. Her interpretations are directly in the tradition of Hungarian fi ddlers such as Szigeti, Telmányi and Varga with her native fl air and un-showy virtuosity. Franz Schubert was a competent violinist and violist and his four violin sonatas pose no problems for skilled players. It is strange, then, that so few really recommendable recordings of them have been made. It is therefore no surprise that these beautiful interpretations by Martzy and Jean Antonietti have become legendary. These performers bring beautiful, meticulously prepared playing to all half dozen pieces. Their interpretations, which are well balanced and clearly recorded for the time, have an inherent strength but also pliancy, transparency and unsentimental sweetness where required.

File in: World / Africa / MaliFormed in 2001, the Malian group Terakaft (whose name is Tamashek for ‘caravan’) affi rms its reputation as a genuine desert blues-rock band in this, its hypnotic third album. With their swirling guitar riffs, subterranean bass and shattering percussion, these blue bloods of the Sahara mine the legacy of master guitarists John Cipollina and Jimi Hendrix. The stark, harsh conditions of the desert permeate their wild riffs, and they are the perfect embodiment of all that is wild and free in desert blues today. Terakaft was formed in 2001 with a line-up that included two former members of Tinariwen. The band features a perfect mix of two rhythm guitars (one keeping the beat effortlessly, the other soaring and sweet) and the deep, heartbeat tones of the bass, resembling the delicate but strong steps of a camel making its way through the desert.

IMPORTFile in: World / BrazilMárcio Faraco is the Brazilian Leonard Cohen. Each one of his songs is exemplary in its fi nesse and fragile balance between gentleness and seriousness. His distinctive style is free of pathos but has traces of his illustrious infl uences, João Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes. O Tempo evokes the primitive sound of Portuguese music — the longing expressed by fado mixed with African and Cuban sounds. The themes are always autobiographical creating an intimate journey through time and memory.

DOMESTICSACD Hybrid/ StereoFile in: JazzThe aptly titled Inception is the astounding album on which the great pianist McCoy Tyner debuted as a leader. Though only in his mid-’20s, Tyner plays with a power and confi dence that bespeaks his musical maturity. He is joined by the mighty bassist Art Davis and the uncanny drumming powerhouse known as Elvin Jones, Tyner’s band mate with John Coltrane. In all, this session is a true classic in the piano trio format and a particularly special recording of one of the instrument’s most celebrated masters.

DOMESTICSACD Hybrid/ StereoFile in: JazzThis recording contains five selections from a session featuring tenor Coleman Hawkins, pianist Hank Jones, bassist George Duvivier and drummer Shelly Manne. It features classics such as the “Take the ‘A’ Train,” “Cherokee” and “Avalon.” The album is aptly named 2 3 4, as the musicians perform in duo, trio, and quartet format. This is a unique set, full of surprises.

DOMESTICSACD Hybrid/ StereoFile in: JazzThis 1962 effort was Freddie Hubbard’s fi rst recording under his own name for Impulse. Fellow Jazz Messenger Curtis Fuller and newcomer John Gilmore color the proceedings with trombone and tenor saxophone, respectively. These rock-solid, post-bop horn players are backed by the formidable rhythm section of Tommy Flanagan on piano, Art Davis on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. Hubbard’s style shows a clear debt to the late Clifford Brown and a nod to the bold sonic curiosity of John Coltrane.

DOMESTICSACD Hybrid/ StereoFile in: JazzSonny Rollins made some excellent recordings for Impulse in the mid-1960s — a time when his unassailable skills and acrobatic approach made him a leading saxophonist and one of the few to rival John Coltrane. This album has only fi ve tracks, but each tells the complex, glorious story of Rollins’ talent. “On Green Dolphin Street,” “Everything Happens to Me,” and “Three Little Words” are among the standouts on this collection.

IMPORTFile in: JazzThis set contains both of the Georges Brassens tributes by Rodolphe Raffalli — albums that brought the guitarist wide international recognition. Although the guitarist was already well known to Django Reinhardt fans, upon its release, the fi rst disc came as a revelation to the public. The second consecrated Raffalli and his quartet as some of the best improvisers and melodists in the jazz world. The music here is a sensitive, brilliant fusion of the potent melodic style of French Chanson and the fi ery lyricism of Gypsy Swing.

IMPORTFile in: JazzFrank Woeste originally trained as a classical pianist and organist. He discovered jazz at age 16 and never looked back. Woeste has won several prizes at national and international competitions for jazz and improvised music, including fi rst prize at Jazz à Mennecy in 1998, fi rst prize at the Concours Charles Trenet in 1999 and second prize at the Montreux International Solo Piano Competition in 2003. Double You, Woeste’s debut album for World Village, is inspired by the dualities in life and music. This recording explores the balance between melody and harmony, composition and improvisation. Supported by Woeste’s tight trio arrangements, Double You continues to surprise the listener throughout the album with its astonishing melodic and harmonic invention.
