On The Rose of Sharon, vocalist Joel Frederiksen is accompanied by the Ensemble Phoenix in a program of rarely heard American church music from the 18th and 19th centuries. The focus is on a religious movement called the ‘Great Awakening’ and the disc includes songs of the Quakers, Shakers and the Moravian Brethren. The release takes its name from a passage in the Song of Solomon that was set by William Billings in his 1778 book, “The Singing Master’s Assistant.” Billings is widely considered to be the “father of American choral music.”

“[Gergiev] affi rms his versatility with compelling interpretations of three Ravel staples. His Daphnis et Chloe is voluble and vividly colored. While the conductor never overlooks the smallest wonder of
Ravel’s nonpareil orchestration, Gergiev’s reading is boldly assertive, and this is a ballet — danceable.”
“Melnikov brings out the pieces’ personalities better than anyone I’ve heard... [His] polyphonic clarity is superior as well…And his playing never lacks color, either — his command of shading
is enviable... If I had to, I’d sell any other set I had to buy this one.”

April showers bring new delights at harmonia mundi. Emmanuelle Bertrand lets the cello speak in her wide-ranging selection of solo works on Le Violoncelle Parle (p.3), while Andreas Staier enlists the support of the Freiburger Barockorchester in solving the musical riddles of CPE Bach’s Keyboard Concertos (p.4). New on Hyperion, Marc-André Hamelin presents a major Liszt recital (p.6) featuring the B Minor Sonata. For his second disc of the month, Hamelin is supported by Ilan Volkov and the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin in a brilliant recording of piano concertos by Reger and Strauss (p.7). Hyperion stalwart Graham Johnson offers the second volume in his traversal of the complete songs (p.10), this time teamed with soprano Christine Schäfer. On LSO Live, Valery Gergiev debuts three Debussy favorites (p.12) with the London Symphony Orchestra, and presents the third volume of his Shostakovich cycle with the Mariinsky Orchestra (p.13).

IMPORTOn Le violoncelle parle (the Cello Speaks), Emmanuelle Bertrand performs a wide-ranging selection of compositions for solo cello. The works Bertrand has chosen speak to the idioms of each of the specifi c composers’ cultural and musical backgrounds. Featured are Spaniard Gaspar Cassadó’s Suite for Solo Cello, British composer Benjamin Britten’s Suite No.3 for Solo Cello as well as Frenchman Pierre Amoyel’s Itinérance and Hungarian Zoltán Kodály’s Sonata for Solo Cello. In Bertrand’s hands, the cello truly ‘speaks’ and takes us beyond geographical boundaries and straight to the heart of the language of cultural inspiration.

IMPORTThe Sei concerti per il cembalo concertato were the outcome of a period of intensive work between 1770 and 1772 shortly after Carl Philipp Emanuel arrived in Hamburg. Introducing one of his most exciting recording ventures, Andreas Staier explains the incredible diversity in unity of these works, “whose arrangement is not linear, but concentric. One has the impression that Bach wanted to set a series of musical riddles which constantly force the audience to take a critical distance from its own listening.” Staier is joined by the Freiburger Barockorchester in this fascinating disc of keyboard concertos.

IMPORTThe spirit of Les Dissonances is one of bringing together disparate worlds. The ensemble, which varies in size according to repertoire, plays without a conductor and highlights contemporary and past composers with absolute freedom in its choice of programs. Such autonomy enables the musicians to fulfill their first objective, which is to reach new audiences that might have been intimidated by classical music in the past, and enable them to see the major works of the repertoire in a different light. On this new CD, leader David Grimal mixes Vivaldi and Piazzolla in a fascinating program of music with similar themes.
IMPORTThe debut recording from the Quatuor Byron is entirely devoted to the music of Dmitri Shostakovich. The famous eighth quartet is a quasi-autobiographical work that evokes the composer’s struggle against the Soviet regime. The String Quartet No.9 and the Two Pieces for String Quartet, lesser known, are rich with the signature emotional characteristics of Shostakovich’s style — pain and suffering mixed with equal doses of sardonic humor.

— INTERNATIONAL RECORD REVIEW
IMPORTHyperion presents a major Liszt recital from one of today’s most admired recording artists. The Piano Sonata in B minor is undoubtedly one of the peaks of the repertoire and recordings are suitably copious. However, when an artist of Marc-André Hamelin’s virtuoso pedigree wishes to tackle it, no excuse need be made for an additional version. The recital opens with a lesser-known masterwork, the Fantasy and Fugue on B-A-C-H, and for light relief there is Liszt’s scintillating supplement to his Italian Année de Pèlerinage, the three pieces of Venezia e Napoli. The emotional core of the disc is Liszt’s intensely spiritual Bénédiction du Dieu dans la solitude.

IMPORTThe Reger Piano Concerto has a formidable reputation — dense, harmonically complex and with far too many notes for the average pianist. Who better then to decipher it than
Marc-André Hamelin? In his hands, this rarely recorded behemoth reveals both passion and a lyricism so often lost in lesser performances. He is wonderfully partnered by Ilan Volkov and the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, who share the pianist’s desire to elucidate an often misunderstood work. While the Reger concerto comes from the end of his career, the Strauss Burleske is a product of that composer’s prodigious youth. This ebullient work has long been a Hamelin ‘party-piece,’ and he plays it with an unmatched brilliance that surely captures the essence of this humorous music and will have listeners on the edges of their seats.

“One of the most adventurous and certainly the most courageous

IMPORTHenryk Górecki’s intriguing String Quartets, all commissions from the Kronos Quartet, signifi ed a new creative phase in his music. The stark contrasts that had been at the heart of Górecki’s compositional thinking in the 1950s and 1960s reemerged in his chamber music of the mid 1980s and are prevalent in these works. Fans of Górecki will be familiar with the compositional devices employed such as open fi fths, sustained rocking motifs, and the juxtaposition of dissonance and consonance. In these distinctive quartets both Beethoven and Szymanowski’s well-documented infl uences on the composer are apparent as well as his fascination with the folk cultures of Southern Poland, with the frequent incorporation of folk derived themes. The Royal String Quartet, renowned for the championing of music from their homeland, display an astonishing range of color, fi nesse and attack in these intelligent interpretations.
IMPORTJonathan Harvey is Britain’s foremost composer of electronic music and he has developed a complex and personal musical language for which he is globally recognized. His catalogue of works explores unique sound worlds and imaginative ensembles. The works on this disc, composed within seven years of each other during one of the most productive periods of Harvey’s career, demonstrate the stylistic range of his choral writing, including his unique approach to the combination of live performance and electronic sound and his innate sympathy for the voice. The Latvian Radio Choir have been labeled the creators of a new choral paradigm — a testament to their diverse range of voices and skillful performances of challenging experimental works. On this disc, the group makes their Hyperion debut with thrilling performances of some of Harvey’s choral masterworks.

IMPORTFollowing on his iconic Hyperion projects focused on the complete songs of Schubert and Schumann,
Graham Johnson’s latest enterprise traverses the complete songs of Brahms. He is joined here on the second volume in the series by the wonderful soprano Christine Schäfer, whose contribution to the Schumann song series won a Gramophone Award. Each volume in the series takes us on a journey through Brahms’s career, from youthful settings to songs of maturity. This volume includes a selection of delightful Mädchenlieder and concludes with a handful of Brahms’s intimate folksong settings. Discerningly partnered by Graham Johnson, Christine Schäfer is in perfect voice. She sings with a pure, luminous tone, crystal clear diction and eloquent phrasing, making this a superb recital in its own right. As part of the wider survey of the complete songs of Brahms, it will take an essential place in any Lieder-lover’s collection.

IMPORTAndré Campra (1660-1744) is considered to be one of the major fi gures in the French music revival. Known primarily for his operas, this program focuses on his Requiem which is an unjustly neglected masterpiece of the sacred repertoire. Here the piece is accompanied by one of his important motets, In convertendo. This music helped pave the way for French composers such as Gabriel Fauré and Maurice Durufl é. K617 has brought together a talented group of performers for this disc, led by conductor Olivier Schneebeli. The result is a benchmark recording.

IMPORT • SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDValery Gergiev has been performing Debussy’s music regularly with the LSO since he became Principal Conductor in 2007. For his latest LSO Live release, he presents his fi rst recordings of three Debussy favorites, including a sensational performance of La mer. Widely considered one of the twentieth century’s most innovative and infl uential composers, Debussy was a “musical impressionist,” although it was a term he disliked. Despite running to little over ten minutes in duration, the sublime Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune is regarded as one of the most important and revolutionary of musical works. La mer was completed ten years later whilst Debussy was living in England and is a spectacular orchestral showpiece. Jeux, one of Debussy’s fi nal orchestral works, was written for Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes.

IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDFor the third release in his Shostakovich symphony cycle, Valery Gergiev again couples two works from different stages in the composer’s career. Although Shostakovich’s symphonies are usually highly programmatic, the third and tenth symphonies are among his most enigmatic works. The third was fi rst performed in January 1930, its fi nal movement setting a text by Semyon Isaakovich Kirsanov praising May Day and the revolution. Shostakovich stated that the work, “expresses the spirit of peaceful reconstruction,” yet much of the music is dark and somber in tone. The tenth is one of his most popular and frequently heard works. First performed in December 1953, the great Russian soprano Galina Vishnevskaya claimed that the symphony was, “a composer’s testament of misery, forever damning a tyrant.”

IMPORTA great but still somewhat neglected composer, Max Reger was an unconditional admirer of Johann Sebastian Bach. Reger’s works for unaccompanied violin, the Preludes and Fugues, are inspired by the Sonatas and Partitas written by his illustrious idol. Here the two sets of works strike up a dialogue as if between mirror images, right down their respective Chaconnes. Violinist Sayaka Shoji performs brilliantly on the fascinating disc of musical comparisons from Mirare.
IMPORTWritten twenty years apart, these gems of chamber music by Johannes Brahms present two captivating faces of a complicated romantic composer. Mezzo-soprano Andrea Hill sings the intimate and poignantly nostalgic Zwei Gesänge for mezzo, viola and piano and the Modigliani Quartet is joined by pianist Jean-Frédéric Neuburger in the crowd-pleasing Piano Quintet, a work of almost symphonic texture and intensity.

With aesthetics ranging from naturalism and spiritual fidelity (Fibich) to the compositional ethic of Dvorák (Foerster), to uncompromising patriotism (Novák), they form a sharp contrast to the storyteller of Pohádka, whose centennial is commemorated here. The Kinsky Trio Prague makes all the right musical connections on this fascinating SACD of Czech music.

IMPORTIn the course of preparing the booklet for the BBC’s celebrations of Mahler’s centenary in 1960, Deryck Cooke felt that he needed to do more than simply describe the unfi nished state of the Tenth Symphony. Most of Mahler’s sketches had been published by 1924, and Cooke discovered to his surprise that detailed study revealed much more than the incomplete and fragmentary work he had believed it to be. The BBC agreed to include the tenth in its complete cycle of the symphonies in the form of a detailed illustrated talk. The event, preserved on this recording, took place on December 19, 1960. Nearly all of the symphony was performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra under Berthold Goldschmidt. The critical reaction was positive, but Mahler’s widow, who had given her blessing to the idea, banned all future performances without having heard any of the music. Eventually persuaded to listen to a tape of the broadcast, she was so moved by hearing it that she rescinded the ban. The fi rst complete performance, heard here, took place on August 13, 1964 at the BBC Proms with Berthold Goldschmidt conducting the London Symphony Orchestra.

IMPORT • File in: World Music / IranAccords Croisés presents Rapture — a disc that brings together Iranian singer Alireza Ghorbani and Tunisian singer Dorsaf Hamdani for the fi rst time. It presents a unique dialogue between the Arabic and Persian worlds. The Rubaiyat, written by poet and Persian philosopher Omar Khayyam, is filled with mysticism. Nourished by the Sufi philosophy, it concerns an existential questioning about mankind, the enjoyment of living and the relation of men with the Creator. Khayyam’s verses describe a lover in search of the mysterious and forbidden secrets of life.

IMPORTFile in: World Music / UgandaNew from Ocora this month are three albums of traditional music from India, Cape Verde and Uganda. The esteemed north Indian singer Girija Devi is featured in a live recording of a concert given in Paris in 1992. Born in 1929, Devi is a specialist in classical and light classical thumri. The popularity of Cape Verdean music has grown exponentially thanks to great artists such as Cesaria Evora. Through the vocals of Nha Mita Pereira, a legend of batuque tradition, the very soul of Cape Verde is exposed. Finally, a collection of music of the Baganda people, Uganda’s main ethnic group features selections including dances, religious invocations and secular songs.

IMPORTFile in: World Music / TunisiaAmine and Hamza, two brothers from Tunisia, are celebrated worldwide as geniuses on their instruments, the oud and the kanun. After training with the great masters in Tunisia, Morocco and Turkey, they recorded their first albums at the age of 16 and 17 respectively. Five albums have followed since, but Perpetual Motion is surely their masterpiece. In these new works, Arab and western modern classicism meet, leaving ample room for improvisation. This wonderful project is enriched by the singing of Maroua from Tunisia and contributions from virtuoso musicians on fl amenco guitar, fl ute and oriental percussion instruments.

IMPORTFile in: JazzThe seasoned jazz soloists collectively known as The Cookers derive their name from “Night of the Cookers” — the recorded trumpet summit between Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard staged at Brooklyn’s Club La Marchal in 1965. The Cookers are a veteran supergroup consisting of George Cables on piano, Billy Harper on tenor saxophone, Billy Hart on drums, Cecil McBee on bass, Eddie Henderson and David Weiss on trumpet and fl ugelhorn and Craig Handy on fl ute and alto saxophone. On Cast the First Stone, The Cookers got together with an idea of the sonic approach they wanted to pursue and reached back into their catalogs for vibrant pieces. The resulting album is a unique experience, full of inspiration, moxie and brilliance.

IMPORTFile in: JazzTasty! is the debut release by MSG, a group comprised of inventive Indian-American alto Rudresh Mahanthappa, Indo-Dutch drummer Chander Sardjoe and Irish bass-guitarist Ronan Guilfoyle. The trio first met as part of Ireland’s Kilkenny arts festival in 2005. The trigger was a mutual interest in south Indian music and its compatibilities with contemporary jazz. The result is a group offering one of the freshest new directions in jazz, setting the pace for the new millennium. Each musician brings their unique cultural backgrounds, musical knowledge and experience to the table, making MSG a new ‘fl avor enhancer’ to watch in improvised music.
