Heliopolis is the fourth volume of harmonia mundi’s Matthias Goerne Schubert Edition, a series that has already created quite a stir, garnering a Gramophone Editor’s Choice and a Choc du Monde de la Musique, among other awards.

A recent New York Times article included Marc-André Hamelin’s Piano Sonatas Vol. 2 on Hyperion as well as two harmonia mundi discs, Die Jahreszeiten with René Jacobs and Piano Trios with Patrick Cohen, Erich Höbarth and Christophe Coin. Hamelin’s Haydn was also featured on NPR’s All ings Considered.

Composer, organist, organ builder and teacher of international renown, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck was known in his own time as the “Orpheus of Amsterdam.” Among his signifi cant contributions to Franco-Flemish polyphony are psalms in French that closely follow the dictates of the Reformation and sacred vocal works in Latin, among which the Magnificat is particularly outstanding. Cappella Amsterdam is a professional chamber choir that was founded in 1970. Over the past few years the ensemble, under the direction of Daniel Reuss, has occupied a prominent position in the fi eld of early music as well as modern and contemporary repertoires.

This album is a virtual journey into Chopin’s musical world. On February 21, 1842, the Polish composer gave one of his very rare concerts. He did not enjoy appearing in public, for his music was above all an intimate art. On Chopin chez Pleyel, Alain Planès has recreated the program of this concert as closely as possible and recorded it on a Pleyel piano of 1836 that the composer might very well have played. The questions he throws up in the process are fascinating. How did Chopin play? Apart from his famous rubato, what was the role of ornamentation and indeed improvisation? This fascinating album offers very plausible and musically satisfying answers to some of these questions.

LIMITED EDITION

Includes Bonus DVD — 23 MinutesIf one believes an anecdote from the early 1790s, it was with his oratorio Die Schöpfung (The Creation) that Haydn, in the autumn of his years, hoped to perpetuate his fame for posterity — even though he was already the most celebrated composer in Europe. Not surprisingly, the work’s fi rst public performance in 1799 was a huge triumph and the work was immediately repeated twice. Five years after his much acclaimed version of Die Jahreszeiten (The Seasons), René Jacobs offers a new, defi nitive version of this masterpiece as his major contribution to the celebration of the bicentenary of Haydn’s death.

“Mr. Jacobs, more than anyone else I’ve heard, blows away the prim domesticity of our classical music world, and

shows us past centuries as they really might have been.”— THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

CONCERT REVIEW“ Haydn’s delightful touches of audio-visual detail — the sun and moon, the birds and beasts — came over with unusually vivid effect... Julia Kleiter’s pristine vocalism moved around the soprano part with the same delicacy and skill as Maximilian Schmitt’s around the tenor’s.”

More than any other composer since JS Bach, Astor Piazzolla achieved the ultimate synthesis of the musical infl uences acting upon him — from Bach to jazz to classical music of his contemporaries — while remaining true to his Argentine roots. In this dazzling program, London Concertante goes “beyond” Piazzolla classics and introduces four newly written works by David Gordon and Adam Summerhayes that pay homage to the master.

The six string quartets of opus 33, though known as the “Russian Quartets” in reference to their dedicatee the Grand Duke of Russia and future Tsar Paul I, in fact have much more to in common with Austrian folk music and comic opera. Almost ten years after the extreme intensity of his opus 20 quartets, Haydn shows his wit and good humor in these works played here in a brand new recording by the Cuarteto Casals. Also new in the Haydn Edition series is this recording of music that features music from the composer’s “Sturm und Drang” period. Here, the musicians of the Freiburger Barockorchester perform the symphony known as La Passione, a work bathed in an intensely emotional atmosphere characteristic of this pre-Romantic movement. It is coupled here Haydn’s less angst-laden violin concerto No.1 and symphony No.80.

Over the years, the Silk Road Ensemble has evolved from a group of strangers, brought together by artistic director Yo-Yo Ma, into a close-knit band of friends. Off the Map is a testament to that transformation, as the Silk Road Project celebrates its 10th anniversary. Gabriela Frank’s Ritmos Anchinos transports us into the Andes, with pipa and sheng imitating indigenous folk instruments. Angel Lam’s childhood memories emerge in Empty Mountain, Spirit Rain — an urban groove of Hong Kong carried by shakuhachi and bass. Creation of the world is at the center of Evan Ziporyn’s Sulvasutra. Written for India’s great tabla player Sandeep Das, the piece is an explosion of colors — cosmic particles uniting in the Big Bang, knowledge spreading like fi re throughout the universe. Osvaldo Golijov’s Air to Air invokes a Sicilian protest song, prayers to Holy Mother Guadalupe and songs from the Christian Arab Easter service, known to millions across the Middle East through recordings by the incomparable Lebanese singer Fairouz. The album features the playing of such renowned superstars as Kayhan Kalhor, Wu Man, Cristina Pato and Wu Tong, yet it is the Silk Road Ensemble’s collective spirit that shines through, proving great things can happen when strangers meet.

A year ago APR issued, to great critical acclaim, a double album of Ignace Paderewski’s fi rst recordings made in Europe in 1911-12 (APR 6006). Between 1914 and 1931, the pianist recorded for Victor in the US but in 1937, after it appeared Paderewski had retired from the studio, he was persuaded to return to the HMV studios in London to make a fi nal series of recordings. At fi rst the plan was to record the repertoire that featured in the fi lm “Moonlight Sonata,” a huge success at the time that featured Paderewski playing himself. But in addition to this repertoire, Paderewski went on to record works by Haydn and Mozart that were new to his discography. These works in particular reveal the extreme poetry that had mesmerized audiences for fi fty years and made Paderewski the most famous pianist of his generation. This is the fi rst time all of the 1930’s HMV recordings have been assembled together and two unissued tracks from the 1938 sessions are also included.

Julia Wolfe’s Dark Full Ride consists of four new compositions, each written for multiples of individual instruments — nine bagpipes, four drum sets, six pianos and eight double basses. Wolfe says, “Like staring for a long time at a Rothko painting, I imagined each of these pieces as an exploration of one color. But in truth an instrument isn’t really a single timbre. There are a myriad of worlds within each sound.” Working closely with the performers during the composing process, Wolfe uncovers a never-before-heard music. For example, while writing LAD, she uses the initial drone produced while fi lling the bagpipe with air as the piece’s introduction. Says Wolfe, “With each piece I tried to dive into a psychedelic landscape, at once multilayered, fractured, ecstatic, silent, driving, cacophonous and direct.”

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDMozart’s father Leopold was probably the driving force behind the gloriously lyrical Sinfonia Concertante for violin and viola. Leopold advised his son to master this genre for public concerts. Organizers were keen to program it, since the work offered audiences the attractive spectacle of rivaling soloists. Meanwhile, Haydn was passing his days as court chapel-master to one of the wealthiest noble families in Hungary, the Esterházys. Haydn composed most of his concertos (including the two heard here) during this period. Rachel Podger and Pavlo Beznosiuk duel on Strads in the Mozart whilst Podger solos in the Haydn works. All are accompanied by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

T h e s e t w o s p l e n d i d concertos by Stenhammar are offered together on one CD for the first time. The original orchestration of Stenhammar’s first concerto was long thought to be lost when the offi ces of the publisher were bombed during the second world war. However, in 1983 a copy of the original was found in the Library of Congress and this version is featured here. The twenty-two year old’s opus one is a masterpiece. Majestic and virtuosic at its opening, the work explores a world of Nordic mystery in the third movement and ends with music of sad, refl ective sweetness. The second concerto is a distinctly different work, with a novel structure and a steady tension between soloist and orchestra that is only resolved in the virtuosic fi nale. Andrew Manze, makes his Hyperion debut directing the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra. Pianist Seta Tanyel has featured on previous RPC recordings, always gaining the highest critical acclaim.

The second concerto is a distinctly different work, with a novel structure and a steady tension between soloist and orchestra that is only resolved in the virtuosic fi nale. makes his Hyperion debut directing thefeatured on previous RPC recordings, always gaining the highest critical acclaim.

The recent revival of York Bowen’s music, very much spearheaded by Hyperion, has spawned a plethora of new recordings and won the composer many new admirers. Among the new releases, this disc of Bowen’s piano sonatas is a uniquely important collection. It contains three premiere recordings, including two recordings of previously unpublished sonatas performed (with special permission) from the manuscripts. It is thus the fi rst ever recording of the complete sonatas — an unmissable opportunity for piano enthusiasts. Hyperion is delighted to welcome back the young virtuoso Danny Driver who was enthusiastically acclaimed for his masterly, stylish and technically dazzling performances of Bowen’s third and fourth piano concertos.

The peerless Takács Quartet, recently nominated for a Gramophone award for their second disc of Brahms’s string quartets, continue their exploration of the Romantic chamber music tradition with this disc of Schumann. The Piano Quintet is by far Schumann’s most popular chamber work and one of the most beloved works in the genre. Schumann was the fi rst romantic composer to pair the piano with the string quartet. Schumann studied the string quartets of Beethoven, Mozart and Haydn and his quartet Op 41 No 3 demonstrates these influences. However, is contains many highly original strokes, particularly the casting of the scherzo as a set of variations. The Takács Quartet are joined by Marc-André Hamelin in an invigorating partnership that has already been widely acclaimed on the concert platform.

This disc featuring the New London Orchestra under Ronald Corp showcases the work of Grazyna Bace w i c z (1909-1969) , whose centenary is celebrated this year. It contributes greatly to the knowledge of her music outside her native Poland,

where she is still an important and well-loved cultural fi gure. It contains premiere recordings of both the Sinfonietta and the Symphony for string orchestra. Bacewicz was one of the most signifi cant composers of the mid-twentieth-century, with strong roots in the culture of Paris, where she studied both composition and violin in the early 1930s. Her most striking music is that which draws on her experience of the neoclassicism of inter-war France. Bacewicz emphasizes neoclassicism’s vitality and clarity while at the same time giving it a combination of delicacy and muscularity which is all her own.

Rihards Dubra, born in Riga in 1964, spent his early years under a Soviet regime for which any public performances of sacred music were not permissible. During his studies with Adolfs Skulte at the Latvian State Conservatory, Dubra began to test the boundaries of political acceptance in the fi nal years of Soviet rule. He has now emerged as a distinctive voice in the world of sacred music. Dubra describes his music as, “a style of meditation” — one instilled with the essence of the Middle Ages, through the view of a man who lives in the twentieth century.” This recording represents a selection of pieces, from early experimentation to his fully formed style, which fuses minimalism and neo-romantic melodies with the infl ections and philosophy of Gregorian, Medieval and Renaissance music. The Choir of Royal Holloway is directed by Rupert Gough in this their debut recording for Hyperion.

“What more can you possibly ask for? Here is a choir of 23 young singers, fresh of tone and fresh of mind, careful and accurate over their notes yet giving the impression that it all comes naturally. Collectively they have a keen feeling for rhythm. They enunciate clearly but without making a point of it. They blend perfectly, they shade sensitively,

they appear to work with a like mind towards an agreed ideal of choral sound.”

When The Sixteen embarked upon their recording career back in 1982, few would have been able to predict quite how successful they would become, or how far they would go towards rehabilitating the little-known and barely recorded music of the four master composers of the sixteenth century featured on this set. In this their 30th anniversary year, we join them in celebrating the Golden Age of Polyphony by presenting their twelve discs of this repertoire in an attractively packaged (and priced) remastered 10-CD set.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThe three string quartets of the Op.50 cycle performed here by the Prazák Quartet are both bright and full of humor. Haydn wrote sixty-eight quartets, all composed after he was already forty years old. They were nearly all written solely for private performance by top musicians, often with Haydn joining in as second violinist. Scholars have said that the Op.50 quartets contain some of the purest writing Haydn ever accomplished.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDBohuslav Martinu wrote no less than ten works for trio with keyboard, including four in the classic formation of piano, violin and cello, spread out between 1930 and 1951. Three of these piano trios are offered here, played by the Kinsky Trio, the latest rising star in a long line of famed Czech chamber groups from the Suk Trio, to the Talich and Prazák quartets.

But with the unprecedented outpouring of emotion in his Symphonie fantastique , Berl ioz almost overpowered Paris. This orchestral sonic spectacular, written to win the heart of a beautiful actress, demanded sacrifi ce from its author and his audience. From romantic daydreams to deadly displays of devotion, the symphony relates an “episode in the life of an artist,” that artist being the love-obsessed composer himself. This symphony encapsulates the inner drama — and trauma — that made Berlioz one of the masters. In this volume of Keeping Score, Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony unwrap the layers of Ives’ Holidays Symphony to reveal a surprising musical portrait of New England. The symphony’s four movements journey across the terrain of the seasons. 109 Minutes / 16:9 widescreen / 5.1 surround soundShostakovich may have hidden a subversive cipher beneath the surface of his life-saving Symphony No. 5. This is all the more shocking since another bad review from Stalin’s totalitarian forces could have meant a sentence to the Gulag or worse. After his opera Lady Macbeth was publically condemned as immoral by Pravda, the Soviet newspaper, Shostakovich knew he had only one chance to redeem himself. When he penned this fi fth symphony, the composer was literally writing for his life. The risk was so high that Shostakovich slept on the stairs outside his apartment so the secret police would not wake his family when they came for him, as he was sure they would. This volume of Keeping Score investigates the symphony that would either redeem Shostakovich or doom him. Wilhelm Furtwängler had a unique conducting technique. He saw symphonic music as creations of nature that could only be realized subjectively into sound. This is why composers such as Beethoven and Brahms were so central to Furtwängler’s repertoire, because he identifi ed them as great forces of nature. This disc of live, never before released recordings features Mozart’s fortieth and Brahms’ fourth symphonies, taken from a 1949 concert with the Berlin Philharmonic in Wiesbaden, Germany.

In 1945, Eduard van Beinum succeeded Willem Mengelberg as only the second conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra and he remained in that position until his death in 1959. Despite the fact that his early tenure was clouded with controversy over his alleged Nazi sympathies, the great Dutch conductor received worldwide acclaim and is now particularly famous for his interpretations of Bruckner. This disc of previously unreleased live recordings from 1956 features two concertos played by the great English pianist Myra Hess.

Scherchen’s Beethoven symphonies

The great German conductor Hermann Scherchen began his career as a violist, playing with the Bluthner Orchestra of Berlin while still in his teens. He began conducting in 1914 and worked in Latvia and Germany until 1933, when he moved to Switzerland in protest of the Nazi regime. Although Scherchen was a major champion of contemporary composers such as Schönberg, Strauss, Webern, Berg and Varèse, he was no stranger to the classic repertoire. He is perhaps best known for his orchestral arrangement of Johann Sebastian Bach’s The Art of Fugue. Also of note is his 1958 recording of Beethoven’s third symphony for the Westminster label, containing what is still one of the fastest fi rst movements ever recorded and the closest to Beethoven’s own metronome marking. This complete set of Beethoven symphonies is culled from various recordings made between 1951 and 1954 and is a fascinating record of Scherchen’s view of these immortal works.

The four works on this disc come from the fi rst nine years of a compositional career that would span almost another half century. Yet today, one scarcely hears them as ‘early Stockhausen,’ but rather as a series of essential cornerstones of the emerging post-war European avant-garde on which Stockhausen, as the youngest major composer involved, exercised a crucial infl uence. What should strike is not what these pieces have in common, but how different they are from one another. Each exemplifi es a phase of Stockhausen’s early development. The Ensemble Recherche is one of the most distinguished ensembles for new music. With more than 450 premieres to its credit since it was founded in 1985, the ensemble has made a substantial contribution to the development of contemporary chamber and ensemble music.

In describing his Ninth Symphony, written for mixed chorus and orchestra, composer Hans Werner Henze explains, “What happens in this symphony is an apotheosis of terror and pain. It is a summa summarum of my creative output, the attempt to come to terms with the assaults of an arbitrary and unpredictable world. A German reality, this symphony is above all an expression of enormous respect for the people who dared to resist in the time of Nazi-Fascist terror and who gave their lives to defend freedom of thought.” The symphony’s libretto is by Hans-Ulrich Treichel after the novel “The Seventh Cross” by Anna Seghers. On Sube Azul, her World Village debut, the listener is treated not only to the depth and fullness of a riveting voice but also to her formidable skills as a songwriter and arranger. The album is a collection of mostly original Spanish-language songs that refl ect Koutsovitis’ immersion in modern and progressive jazz while also responding to the pull of ancestry and the appeal of organic, pan-musical connections. She brings to bear the folkloric traditions of Argentina and its regional neighbors, tying together diverse infl uences in a program full of complexity, melody and romance. Just as Sube Azul reconciles the artist’s worlds, her North and South American homes, the album strikes other balances in turn — the polish and professionalism of a seasoned artist, the hunger and wide-eyed energy of youth and the simple, sensual qualities that can spring only from the heart.

“As the Argentine singer Sofía Rei Koutsovitis led her multinational band the pas-sion and clarity with which she assayed a tricky mix of South American rhythms and jazz-inflected harmonies made clear why she has been embraced by New

File in: World Music / South America / ArgentinaArgentinean singer, composer and guitarist Gabriela Torres travels naturally from tango, milonga, bossa nova to Rio de la Plata rhythms. On it, she is joined by Lito Vitale (a fi xture on all of her albums), Juan Subirá and Pepe Céspedes for the song “Está Apunao” and Kevin Johansen, with whom she sings the last track of the album, “Panadero.” Other featured contributors include Mati Cella, Fernando Mántaras, Luciano Vitale, Juan Buonuome, Martín González, Pablo Guerra, Dorita Chávez, Pol Neiman, Javi Viña, Mariela Mendez Christie and Omar Ramirez. File in: World Music / Europe / Portugal / FadoJoana Amendoeira is considered to be one of the most important Fado singers of the “New Generation.” In her singing, Fado gains a new glow, a new attitude, without disregarding tradition. Indeed, born in 1982, Amendoeira is the youngest fadista from Portugal performing today. Her career took off in 1994 after a performance at the Lisbon Grand Fado Gala, where she received enthusiastic praise from the jury and the audience. In the following year, she won the Female Interpreter Award at the Oporto Gala. Since then she has been performing non-stop around Portugal and the world. With musical direction by Custódio Castelo, À Flor da Pele is imbued with an intensity that belies the artist’s youth. The album’s concept was to feature a Fado group, and not just a Fado singer with her accompanying musicians. Artists in the band include guitarists Pedro Amendoeira and Pedro Pinhal and Paulo Paz on bass. Their efforts are inspired by the belief that to create a strong and meaningful project, one has to live each moment in the edge.

“Amendoeira is part of a new school of fadistas (see also Mariza) who manage to put all the emotional weight of the genre’s history into their singing, yet carry themselves with a certain lightness. Indeed, her joie de vivre seems almost to betray the axis of passion and

pain around which the songs unfailingly operate. It is testimony to her vocal command that she brings such exceptional conviction to these sad old songs.”

File in: World Music / Africa / Cape VerdeTo state that Nancy Vieira is Cape Verdean may be a way of justifying her innate musicality. But that is not the whole story. Her attitude towards life and the way she interprets it gives rise to a stream of emotions allowing us, through a succession of joys and sorrows, to get a glimpse of her personality. In her voice there is neither rage nor rebellion. Instead, it is full of tenderness and subtlety; rhythm and fi rmness. There is both true feeling and interpretation. Cape Verde is inspiration. The world is both the auditorium and the essential part of a cultural mix from where she draws inspiration. Vieira has worked with many top artists, both live and in recording studios, including Rui Veloso, Ala dos Namorados and Dany Silva. Lus is her third album and marks her debut on World Village. With traditional Cape Verde rhythms as a starting point, Vieira reaches beyond the borders of her home and deftly incorporates sounds from other parts of the world, especially South America.

ADVANCE REVIEW“ Nancy Vieira is another of Cesaria’s successors... she has carved out a glittering career thanks to her winning platform manner and the dark beauty of her voice. Her new all-acoustic CD is the easiest of easy listening, but the guitar accompaniments are as beguiling as her singing, and the songs — some of them mornas, some international cabaret — set up a lovely mood.” — THE SCOTSMAN

Featuring vocals by STING

File in: Pop / RockPianist Katia Labèque is one of the most acclaimed classical musicians of our day. As well as her legions of fans across the globe, Katia’s friends and admirers include Madonna, who cites her as ,”one of her favorite pianists in the world,” to Miles Davis, who dedicated two songs to her on his

1985 album You’re Under Arrest. In addition to Labèque’s considerable success as one half of classical duo The Labèque Sisters, she has collaborated with artists as diverse as Sting, Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea. Shape Of My Heart is a fascinating album that brings together a selection of these collaborations alongside brand new recordings of the music of Satie, Chopin and Radiohead. The album opens with Sting’s “Moon Over Bourbon Street” and “Shape Of My Heart.” Here, the singer’s bold emotion combines with Labèque’s refi ned but assertive lyricism to excellent effect. Also of special note are piano duets with Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Gonzalo Rubalcaba. Labèque clearly enjoys the challenge of playing with three of jazz’s fi nest practitioners and on these tracks Labèque proves beyond doubt that she is an adventurous, imaginative musician at the peak of her creativity.

SACD Hybrid/ StereoFile in: JazzA dedicated disciple of Charlie Parker, alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson focused his energies on the bluesier aspects of his hero’s playing and rendered it with a sweeter edge that fashioned him a viable career for decades. His work for Blue Note showed his impressive mastery of the bop style. Sidemen on Here ‘Tis include Dave Bailey on drums, Grant Green on guitar and Baby Face Willette on organ.

SACD Hybrid/ StereoFile in: JazzThough not as well known as giants Ben Webster and Don Byas, the late Ike Quebec was a major stylist whose specialty was the big-toned, cozy, breathy, romantic tenor saxophone. Quebec made a series of soul-jazz sessions for Blue Note, as well as this 1962 rarity on which he had a go at the au courant bossa nova sound. Accompanied by the burnished guitar of Kenny Burrell and the Latin spice of Willie Bobo, Quebec brings his emotive approach to the sly, cool expression that is bossa nova. The contrast is exhilarating, making for a pleasant surprise for fans of the Brazilian style as well as for Quebec fans accustomed to his usual bluesy groove.
