For their fourth recording, Stile Antico spotlights the work of the neglected Tudor master John Sheppard (c. 1515-1558). The program displays his genius across the range of genres in which he composed, including Catholic liturgical responds and hymns alongside simple English-texted anthems written in the reign of Edward VI. As its centerpiece, the great antiphon Media Vita is a refl ection on the frailty of human life and the hope for salvation.

Omara Portuondo, the world-renowned vocalist who began her career in her native Cuba in the 1940s, made history in October when she became one of the fi rst Cubans in six years to receive a travel visa to perform in the US. Then in November, her latest release Gracias was named Best Contemporary Tropical Album at The Latin GRAMMY® Awards. Omara will return to tour the US in February 2010 for concerts in Boston, New York and Washington DC. For more information see the concert calendar (p.35).

harmonia mundi received nominations for releases by Stile Antico, Conspirare, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson and David Lang’s The Little Match Girl. New label Mariinsky totaled four between its releases of Shostakovich’s The Nose and Symphonies 1 & 15, while SFS Media landed three for their recent Mahler 8. World Village received nominations in the Jazz, World and Latin categories. Susan Graham scored a nomination for Best Classical Vocal for her most recent Onyx disc and the Tallis Scholars grabbed one for Gimell. The 52nd Annual GRAMMY® Awards will be held on January 31, 2010, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and will be broadcast live on the CBS Television Network at 8 p.m. (ET/PT).

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDFollowing up on the huge success of Orient-Occident and Jerusalem, prepare yourself to cross borders. This new release is mainly based on ‘The Book of Science of Music,’ published in 1710 by the

Moldavian prince Dimitrie Cantemir, after many years spent in Istanbul. This unique manuscript enables us to discover rare jewels of Turkish traditional music. Jordi Savall already included some of the pieces from this collection in his album Orient-Occident (AVSA 9848), but he decided to explore it further in order to reveal the magic of the incredible city of Istanbul. This city portrait wouldn’t have been complete without selections from the fascinating Armenian and Sephardic repertoire that was also familiar in Istanbul during this time. Once again, Maestro Savall sheds new light on a Golden Age of cultural dialogue, with the help of Hespèrion XXI and outstanding Turkish and Armenian guests musicians. The result is a ‘Jordi Savall experience’ that goes beyond far beyond music.

“Jordi Savall resuscitates old music with the scholarly care of an archaeologist, then presents it as a vibrant, living tradition.”

A winner of numerous international awards as a producer of both pop and classical recordings, Craig Leon also leads a successful career as a composer and arranger. His album for Joshua Bell of transcriptions for violin and orchestra (Romance of the Violin, Sony) was unanimously acclaimed. Quite naturally, this prompted Leon to turn to the cello, an instrument whose sound has been described as being the closest to that of the human voice. It was then that he met Ophelie Gaillard — first of all through MySpace, then in London, where she was giving a concert at the Wigmore Hall. Leon decided to create some arrangements for her — an experience that has given Gaillard the opportunity to revive the long standing tradition of cellists, from Gregor Piatigorsky to Pablo Casals, who have played crowd-pleasing transcriptions of great works. Accompanied by the rich sound of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, she weaves an elegant tapestry of favorite classics. Dreams, the debut album from brand-new label Aparte (a project from the creator of Ambroisie) was recorded in London’s famous Abbey Road Studios.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDRecorded at Kingsway Hall and engineered by Kenneth Wilkinson, this record couples Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition with Night on Bare Mountain and has long been considered among the greatest sounding records ever made. Perhaps most stunning thing is the effortless dynamics, which have been reviewed and raved about ever since its fi rst release on RCA. Nuance, a holographic soundstage, emotion to spare — this one has it all and is a true reference recording.

To celebrate Valerie Tryon ‘s 75th birthday, APR offers a disc of concertos by the composer perhaps closest to her heart. Here is a disc, more than any other, which shows what a hidden treasure we have in the pianism of this neglected artist. As an added bonus, Tryon plays the premiere recording of Godowsky’s cadenza to the C minor concerto. The disc concludes with the charming Rondo K386, a work for which the original ending was long thought to be lost. However, the missing pages recently came to light and this recording features the complete version of this work.

First performed in 1745, Platée was Rameau’s fi rst comic opera. The plot involves an ugly water nymph who believes that Jupiter, the king of the gods, is in love with her. It was written for the wedding of Louis, Dauphin of France to the Infanta Maria Theresa of Spain, who, according to contemporary sources, like the title character, was no beauty. Instead of getting the composer into trouble, the entertainment at Versailles seems to have been well received and a few months later, Rameau was appointed to the position of Composer of the King’s Chamber Music with a sizable annual pension.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThe nineteenth century was a golden age for choral singing in Germany and Austria. Singing clubs, and later on, choral societies, shot up all over this part of the world. With its goal of stimulation and promotion of German poetry and music, this movement produced a wealth of wonderful vocal music. On Sehnsucht, The Gents offer a broad selection of music from this unique musical repertoire. The album also celebrates the 10th anniversary of the group and is their fi rst recording with new conductor Béni Csillag.

All zones/ 66 minutes/ Dolby Digital Stereo DTS 5.1/ Format HD/ EnglishA genius with the ability to combine French and Italian infl uences in an art that transported the English language, Purcell is one of William Christie’s favorite composers. This production of Dido & Aeneas, featuring a superb cast of soloists, was overwhelmingly acclaimed when created at the Wiener Festwochen in 2006 and once again when repeated at the Opéra Comique in 2008. Perfect in form and balance, of a density only equaled by the intensity of its psychological scope, Dido & Aeneas lends itself to a wide range of options, never ceasing to appeal to a wide audience. With brilliant stage direction by Deborah Warner and elegant production for television by François Roussillon this performance combines various time spaces of the 17th century with the present day in a depth of fi eld taken to even greater heights by subtle lighting schemes.

“Spare and intimately conversational, yet generating huge power, Les Arts Florissants hit the mark unerringly. They can breathe and sigh as one

instrument, and they can fragment into a medley of angrily contending voices; their line is pure, with only the merest

hint of vibrato; with them, meaning is all.”— THE INDEPENDENT

The timeless music of Claude Bolling

Bolling’s music combines unity and diversity. The unity stems from an original harmonic style and evocative strength. The diversity is shown through the tonal mobility and harmonic details, forever situated between the written score and improvisation. Winner of a 1976 Grammy Award and a fi xture on the Billboard chart for a staggering 530 weeks, Bolling’s Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio was a true revolution in the classical world in the US. His brilliant blend of jazz and classical music literally coined the term ‘crossover.’ What is less commonly known is that Bolling’s music was a key factor in an explosion of interest in American jazz masters in Europe. Bolling went on to create several sequels, including the two other discs presented here. Violinist Pinchas Zuckerman and guitarist Alexandre Lagoya commissioned Claude Bolling for their own recordings, which became hits in their own right.

“Claude Bolling occupies, by the reflection of his persona and accomplishments, the role of roving French ambassador of jazz throughout the world. He is of the same class and school where came the other

two grand French masters of jazz, Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli.”— ALLABOUTJAZZ.com

Rather than mere technical studies, Béla Bartók’s 44 Duos for 2 Violins are études in musicianship and the integration of folk song into the composer’s personal idiom. All but two of the themes are traditional — culled from the ‘peasant’ tunes Bartók had gathered in his fi eldwork. For this recording, Angela and Jennifer Chun have prepared a new grouping of these colorful miniatures.

“It’s been a long time since a violin-centered chamber music recording, owing to its compelling performers and intriguing repertoire, called out so demandingly

from its package, “Play me! Play me!”— CLASSICS TODAY

The Dante Quartet continue their award-winning exploration of the French string quartet with this disc which includes two of the greatest works of this genre. Both quartets dazzled and disturbed at their fi rst performances. Debussy’s fantastic, spiraling variations, resisting orthodox ‘development’ of ideas, is described as reminiscent of Monet in recording the variations of light on the façade of Rouen Cathedral. Traditionalist commentators were shocked, but the exotic beauty of the writing excited many, including the young Ravel. Ravel’s quartet is to some extent an homage to Debussy, but, typically, also a work of startling originality. Also included is Ravel’s second violin sonata, an intriguing, jazz-infl uenced work, energetic but with a dark undertow of pain. It was written, as Ravel said, with the aim of, “exploring the basic incompatibility of violin and piano.”

Once Sibelius’s protégé, Einojuhani Rautavaara’s is considered to be one of the greatest living Finnish composers. Over his long career, Rautavaara has achieved success in a great number of musical genres, particularly that of opera. But it is his choral works that have made him a household name, both in his native country and internationally. Recorded here is a fascinating selection of works, including the Suite de Lorca (one of the most popular Finnish choral works of all time) and all demonstrating the unique style forged by the composer on his travels through the musical fashions of the twentieth century. Rautavaara’s rich and sonorous neo-Romantic textures have a steely modernist edge and the resulting voice is one that is deeply attractive and approachable, yet endlessly captivating. The Schola Cantorum of Oxford, led by James Burton, was described in The Times as, “Oxford’s classy intercollegiate choir.” Their previous recordings for Hyperion have received worldwide acclaim.

Cesti was one of the most illustrious representatives of the seventeenth-century Venetian school of opera composers. He had an eventful and successful life and, like the murdered Stradella, he died in murky circumstances (probably by poisoning). The work recorded here dates from his period at the Viennese court, and is characteristic of Viennese opera’s synthesis between comedy and parody and the moral, edifying dimension inherent to court opera.

CONCERT REVIEW“ The strings were supple and radiant... The brass, much used by Prokofiev, were tirelessly accurate, and the wood-wind especially characterful, with some of the orchestra’s younger members playing out of their skins. The best ballets contain music almost too good to be wasted on dancers. Freed from the need to adopt dance tempi, this wonderful music swaggered, sparkled and shimmered as it rarely does in the theatre.”

— THE MAIL ON SUNDAY

James Ehnes revisits the most demanding work in the violin repertoire, and delivers an astonishing new interpretation, focusing on the lyrical rather than the pyrotechnics in the Caprices — though there is ample virtuosity on display here! These works have never been exceeded in the challenges they present for the performer and as such are the ultimate studies for solo violin. Upon hearing Paganini play the Caprices for the first time, Liszt had serious doubts about his own abilities as a composer. In contrast, they inspired Schumann to abandon his chosen career as a writer and take up composition. The disc includes an insightful booklet essay by Ehnes on the composer and the music. Ehnes has a string of highly acclaimed releases on Onyx, including a Gramophone Award winning recording of the Elgar concerto.

If a time-machine could take us back through the centuries, which musical occasion might we choose to attend? Surely a soirée at Rossini’s Parisian home would be high on anyone’s list. Some of the most famous singers of the day would be performing, and the guest-list would read like a who’s who of the French capital at that time. And of course, there’d be the chance to hear something new by the great master himself. For though he abandoned operatic composition in 1829, Rossini went on to compose hundreds of short vocal and piano pieces to tickle the musical palates of those lucky enough to be invited to his famous Saturday evening salons. This release presents a selection of these fascinating works and is accompanied by a fully illustrated booklet with notes by Rossini specialist Richard Osborne.

Orange Mountain Music presents the world-premiere recording of Philip Glass’ seventh symphony, the Toltec, performed by the Bruckner Orchester Linz conducted by Dennis Russell Davies. Written in 2004, the symphony is Glass’ dedication to the Toltec civilization that lived in Mesoamerica from 500 B.C. to 500 A.D. The work is comprised of thee representations (movements) of this Wirrarika culture’s, sacred trinity: The Corn, The Hikuri (Sacred Root) and The Blue Deer. The piece was originally commissioned and performed by Leonard Slatkin and the National Symphony Orchestra.

Orange Mountain Music presents the world premiere recording of Philip Glass’ A Madrigal Opera performed by Finland’s Ooppera Skaala. Glass’ second opera after the landmark Einstein on the Beach, A Madrigal Opera contains no narrative or subject matter. It is a work composed for future writers and directors to create in and around Glass score. It is structured like a traditional madrigal, with six voices and violin and viola accompaniment. Written in 1979, the work represented a huge musical step for the composer as he moved toward a more expressive idiom which later produced works like Satyagraha and Koyaanisqatsi.

“A night-time landscape. A garden faintly visible under the dull glow of the night sky. A few stars dotting the darkness above, shadows of the trees all around. Light shining from a window behind me. What I can see is familiar, but it seems alien at the same time. It’s like a dream — anything may happen.” This is how composer Ludovico Einaudi describes his latest release, Nightbook. Following on the huge international success of his previous album, Divenire, the ideas for Nightbook came together while Einaudi was on tour. The album is rich with unique colors obtained through the close blending of the piano with strings and percussion and from the use of electronics that amplify the sound of the piano, projecting it like a shadow in all directions. Each CD contains a personal access code for the Nightbook website, where listeners can access an archive of notes, alternative versions and videos of the recording sessions.

Keeping Score is much more than a critically acclaimed PBS television series — it is a natural outgrowth of the San Francisco Symphony’salmost century-long commitment to bringing the joy of classical music to people of all ages and musical backgrounds. The series provides innovative, thought-provoking classical music content on PBS television, National Public Radio, the web and through an education program that is a national model for classroom arts integration for K-12 teachers. As companions to the DVD releases on SFS Media, these specially-priced CDs offer complete performances of works featured in each of the acclaimed television programs.

This performance of Bruckner’s seventh symphony was recorded live for radio broadcast at the Philharmonie in Berlin in 1985. Carlo Maria Giulini leads the Berlin Philharmonic in a quintessentially romantic interpretation that drives the incessant melodic stream across breaks, only held back at the great formal caesuras such as at the start of the recapitulation. But there are some exceptions, including the deliberate change of tempo in the Trio of the Scherzo and more particularly in the Finale, the disjointedness of which Giulini contrasts dramatically with the continuity of the preceding movements.

After 23-year-old Van Cliburn of Texas won the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, taking with him both the hearts of the Russian people and his jury (which included such luminaries as Shostakovich, Kabalevsky, Richter and Gilels), he went on to achieve a celebrity and charisma unknown since the days of Liszt and Paderewski. But Cliburn’s only London solo concert, given at the Royal Festival Hall one year later, was a no less remarkable event. A capacity audience (including a bevy of Hollywood stars) witnessed playing of a wholly extraordinary communicative character and power.

File in: World / Caribbean / JamaicaFormed in the rural backwater of Trelawney in 1986, the Blue Light Mento Band is one of the best-kept secrets of Jamaican popular music. Prime exponents of mento, a distinctly Jamaican form of traditional folk music, the group has long been acclaimed on the island for its mastery of the genre. On this debut recording, the group makes it clear why mento is so beloved by devotees. Their sound is unadulterated by urban infl uences, retaining the country feel that has always defi ned mento’s original form. The album holds just the right amount of rawness, yielding an honesty that is lacking in most of the island’s contemporary musical product. In the best mento tradition, the fifteen songs cover a range of topics, featuring folk favorites, suggestive ditties and songs examining the fi ner points of human relationships. The band’s adaptation of Toots and the Maytals’ “Sweet And Dandy” recasts the reggae hit as a mento country stomp, with none other than Toots himself contributing the vibrant harmonica solos. The album was recorded at the legendary Harry J studio by renowned engineers Stephen Stewart and Sam Clayton Junior.

Il26863c@##*@ZPPrice Code: A22

(Suggested Retail Price: $22.98)

File in: World / Europe / BalkansDJ Robert Soko has been throwing parties in Berlin since 1993. He was the first to coin the term BalkanBeats to try and define his mix of music. BalkanBeats are Serbian Gypsy brass and folk melodies reinterpreted, given electronic beats and blended with western styles such as ska and rock. BalkanBeats parties rave all the way from Frankfurt and Vienna to New York and Melbourne. At Soko’s first parties, he played Yugo and celebrated socialist holidays, and the mood was a mix of irony and nostalgia. Soko was surprised to see how many people came, and the parties grew in popularity. Then, after years of listening and playing western-derived rock, punk and ska, Soko found himself returning to his ethnic Balkan music roots. It was a sensation. The press took notice, and the rest is history. Piranha’s enhanced CD features a photo slide show that takes the viewer through a BalkanBeats night in Berlin with music by Fanfare Ciocarlia.

File in: World / Africa / Cape VerdeCesaria Evora’s has overcome poverty, a revolution and even a recent stroke to become a national treasure of Cape Verde and uphold her reputation as an increasingly adventurous icon of world music. On her latest album, Nha Sentimento, Evora ventures further afi eld than ever before, twisting Arabic musical traditions into bluesy, sinuous compositions from some of Cape Verde’s best songwriters. Evora found a collaborator and an admirer in Fathy Salama, a former conductor of the Cairo Orchestra who arranged the three tracks on the album. Salama brought Egyptian instrumentalists into his studio in downtown Cairo to add a new texture to the music, largely written by fellow Cape Verdeans Manuel de Novas and Teofi lo Chantre. The music of Cape Verde is diverse and New World-y, incorporating guitar, violin, and soprano saxophone into its Latin scales and rhythms. Egypt’s reedy pipes, edgy percussion, lush strings and the crystalline sound of the kanun (Arabic zither) feel right at home.

“Cesaria Evora really only sings two ways: well or magnificently.”

Concentrating on the uptempo coladera rhythm, the music gains an unusual, but interesting feel from the use of an Egyptian string section, and despite a stroke last year, the velvet-voiced Évora sounds in fine form.” — THE TELEGRAPH

File in: World / Africa / Burkina FasoPaspanga is the debut album from Burkina Electric, a group of musicians from Africa and Europe led by composer Lukas Ligeti, son of famed Hungarian composer. Their music draws from the tradition and rhythms of Burkina Faso while incorporating contemporary electronic elements. Ligeti explains Burkina Electric’s formation by saying, “In the mid-90s, [we made] our fi rst attempts at creating what could be called African electronica. On our travels to Burkina Faso we met the singer Maï Lingani and guitarist Wende Blass. Soon, we invited two dancers to help us draw audiences into our unusual rhythms and celebrate the continent’s unseverable connection between music and dance.”

Reminder / ResolicitationFile in: World Music / South America / ArgentinaArgentinean-born singer Sofía Rei Koutsovitis is considered one of New York’s most passionate, charismatic and inventive vocalists. On Sube Azul, her World Village debut, the listener is treated not only to the depth and fullness of a riveting voice but also to her formidable skills as a songwriter and arranger. The album is a collection of mostly original Spanish-language songs that refl ect Koutsovitis’ immersion in modern and progressive jazz while also responding to the pull of ancestry and the appeal of organic, pan-musical connections. She brings to bear the folkloric traditions of Argentina and its regional neighbors, tying together diverse infl uences in a program full of complexity, melody and romance. Just as Sube Azul reconciles the artist’s worlds, her North and South American homes, the album strikes other balances in turn — the polish and professionalism of a seasoned artist, the hunger and wide-eyed energy of youth and the simple, sensual qualities that can spring only from the heart.

“As the Argentine singer Sofía Rei Koutsovitis led her multinational band the passion and clarity with which she assayed a tricky mix of South American rhythms and jazz-

inflected harmonies made clear why she has been embraced by New York City audiences from Carnegie Hall to the hippest downtown haunts.”

File in: World / Middle East / LebanonSonates orientales is an album of instrumental music performed by Lebanese pianist and composer Wassim Soubra. Is it classical music? Jazz? World music? No matter what, it deserves further investigation, for Soubra writes using the grammar of classical music (harmonies, counterpoint) combined with the sounds of his childhood, and the result is a western composition that tells an eastern, Lebanese story.

File in: World / Africa / EgyptOn this new Ocora disc, Aïcha Redouane and the Ensemble Al-Adwar rediscover the art of wasla (a musical suite performed by a chamber orchestra — qanun zither, oud lute, kaman violin and riqq percussion), which reached its apogee in Cairo in the 19th century. It is a repertoire and a vocal technique that once seemed completely lost. Redouane, born in Morocco and raised in France, is a leading exponent of Arabic and Arabo-Andalusian music.

The whale songs disc features the songs and calls of fi ve different species of whales collected by the Marine Mammal Fund in San Francisco. The bird song disc is a sound guide that helps the listener to recognize 62 species of common North-American birds from their voices. At fi rst blush, the idea that anyone can re-create the sounds of Jurassic dinosaurs might seem a little ridiculous. However, the disc’s sounds are based on recent scientifi c fi ndings, particularly on the relationship between dinosaurs and today’s birds, and relies on information collected from dinosaur replicas produced by paleontologists.

File in: JazzElisabeth Kontomanou has sung in Paris and New York, as well as in Sweden. Acclaimed by the critics for her two latest recordings, she was awarded the Vocal Jazz Award at the Victoires du Jazz competition in 2006. Since then, preferring an intimate style to an extrovert one and depth to superfi cial effects, she has performed widely in the most prestigious venues. With her latest album, Siren Song, recorded with the Lorraine National Orchestra, Kontomanou once again immerses herself in the great standard numbers that made jazz famous.

File in: JazzFollowing on the release of his widely acclaimed fi rst album Archipel (Nocturne) in 2006, French clarinetist Thomas Savy went back in studio in June 2009 with his bass clarinet to record French Suite with Bill Stewart (drums) and Scott Colley (double-bass), at the legendary Systems Two Studios in NYC. The result is an album filled with energy and contrasts, both sensual and poetic. Savy transfi gures his artistry here, pushing the boundaries instrument as he explores its full range and exploring the many nuances of composition and improvisation.

JAZZ

File in: JazzThis is a two-CD compilation that cherry picks the catalog of Gary Edwards’ Sound Of New Orleans label. S.O.N.O. has always been very much a blue-collar label. Their roster doesn’t really have any high profi le artists, the CDs don’t sport any “arty” covers and they’ve never had anything that resembles a hit. Often, artists’ sales from the bandstand amount to more than what regular retail sales amount to. However, Edwards managed to release some damn good CDs until Katrina sucker-punched him and his label. He literally lost everything. Because of the concept of this 40-track collection, it has a shotgun approach. There are lots of different artists and different styles of music. There are recognizable names including the Zion Harmonizers, Rockin’ Dopsie, Jr. and Tommy Ridgley, but there are also artists that even in the household of a New Orleans music buff, are totally unknown. There is a conscious effort here to assemble songs strongly associated with New Orleans, i.e. “Go to the Mardi Gras,” “Hey Pocky Way,” “Sick and Tired,” etc. In iTunes terminology, if there was a “New Orleans Party Shuffl e” playlist, this CD would fi t the bill. Lots of listenable stuff here and a nice tribute to a guy who never got the credit he deserves.
