Born into an English musical family, organist & composer Christopher Gibbons (1615-1676) probably received early training from his famous father Orlando Gibbons. He sang in the choir of the Chapel Royal and went on to a distinguished career at Westminster Abbey and in the court of Charles II. With this showcase collection of motets, anthems, fantasias for strings and organ voluntaries (all of which are receiving their fi rst recordings), Richard Egarr and the Academy of Ancient Music aim to rescue the composer from unjust obscurity.

Richard Egarr’s latest discovery

“ Every note comes alive with meaning and purpose... Staier’s thoroughly engaging and vibrant musicianship warrant no less than our highest rating.”

— CLASSICS TODAY (10/10 REVIEW)

“ ...the perfect antidotes to the messiness of everyday life… pianist Marc-André Hamelin serves... up [Haydn’s sonatas] with a particular... fl uency and nuance in his ongoing survey.”

— Musical Toronto, John Terauds

“ The Living Room Sessions Part 1 is absolutely stunning and may be the best of Ravi Shankar’s literally hundreds of recordings.”

Reviews of recent releases

Street Date: July 10, 2012

With over fi fty new titles, our July new release offering has something for almost every taste. Topping the list of priorities, the unstoppable conductor Valery Gergiev continues his exploration of operatic repertoire. Gergiev’s latest release for LSO Live brings together an all-star cast including Jeanne-Michèle Charbonnet Angela Denoke, Dame Felicity Palmer and Matthias Goerne in a concert version of Richard Strauss’ Elektra (p.12). Hyperion’s amazing array of collections, including the beloved Romantic Piano Concerto series, has become legendary and each new volume of these in-depth surveys is eagerly awaited. The label’s newest effort focuses on the songs of Franz Liszt. Volume one in the series was met with the highest acclaim and this month sees the début of volume two, featuring the rich voice of mezzo-soprano Angelika Kirchschlager (p.10). Other classical titles of note include a selection of twelve reissues in harmonia mundi’s mid-priced hmGold series as well as SACD remasters of historic recordings by Sviatoslav Richter and Wilhelm Furtwängler. On the non classical front, we are pleased to welcome the labels of the HighNote group to our distribution family. This month sees fi ve new releases on the HighNote and Savant labels, with artists including Tom Harrell, Larry Willis, Piero Odorici, Eric Reed and Joe Chambers. To round out the month, composer Howard Shore is featured in two priority releases. In addition to the previously released soundtrack to David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis (p.25) Shore offers a special treat for collectors and fans - a recording of his music for the video game Soul of the Ultimate Nation (p.24).

Please note: promotional copies are available for priority titles ONLY

IMPORTComposer Théodore Dubois (1837-1924) taught at the Conservatoire de Paris from 1871 and was appointed director in 1896 — a position he held until his retirement in 1905. He combined these duties with a position as organist of La Madeleine in Paris. As performed here by the ensemble Les Siècles under the direction of François-Xavier Roth, works as varied as Ouverture de Frithiof, the strikingly original Dixtuor for double quintet or the romantic Piano Concerto prove that, while he respected tradition, Dubois was also sensitive to modern developments.

Bach’s secular cantatas

IMPORTJohann Sebastian Bach was familiar with the musical styles and forms of many nations. Although known as a ‘serious’ composer, he was also a man who enjoyed the good life, intellectual debates and even Italian opera. Bach’s BWV 201, 205 and 213 are veritable miniature operas, imbued with Italian vocality, humor and joie de vivre. This boxed-set of Bach’s ‘dramas’ performed by Leonardo García Alarcón and Les Agrémens includes a bonus DVD recorded live at the Ambronay Festival in 2011 featuring Die Wahl des Herkules.

IMPORTCertainly the most glamorous of the Matthay students, Harriet Cohen was also known as a socialite as much as a pianist. Her friends included George Bernard Shaw and Ramsay MacDonald and she became notorious as the lover of the married Arnold Bax. Cohen’s repertoire favored Bach and contemporary music rather than the more popular romantic repertoire. Few of her recordings have been reissued on CD so this will be an eagerly awaited set. It includes the fi rst ever (acoustic) recording of Bach’s D minor concerto, and the later post-war remake, and also several of the works Bax wrote for her.

IMPORTPreviously Available as HMA 1901289 (794881421329) Deleted November 2004In spite of its sub-title of “tragédie biblique,” David et Jonathas is by no means an oratorio. But this “psychological drama” is anything but a tragédie lyrique, as conceived and popularized by Lully. With this work, Charpentier succeeds in creating a counter-proposition to the Lullian model. His contemporaries praised the opera as a masterpiece. This reissue features the great William Christie leading his ensemble Les Arts Florissantsin a benchmark recording, fi rst offered in 1988.

IMPORTThe legendary countertenor Alfred Deller recorded for harmonia mundi from 1967 until his death in July 1979. The discs contained in this specially-priced collection, many of them bestsellers, caught the public’s imagination and infl uenced several generations of musicians. The great Nicolaus Harnoncourt proclaimed, “We had never heard a male alto before, and now this! A magnifi cent sound, handled with refi nement, effortless, light, ideal for our old instruments; exceptionally individual and used with great expressiveness. To accompany him was sheer pleasure.” Unavailable for many years, the set is offered again here at an even more attractive price.

IMPORTThis third volume completes Andrew-John Smith’s series of Saint-Saëns’ organ music, which has been praised for the compelling brilliance of the performances, the inspired choice of instrument and the remarkable quality of the music itself. The recital ends with the formidable Fantaisie pour orgue-Aeolian, a work that makes extraordinary technical demands on the organist. The composer himself wrote that it was “unplayable by the fi ngers and feet.” This led to the work being condemned to obscurity and it was as recently as 1988 that it was reconstructed and published for the fi rst time. Smith’s performance defi es this edict, and the translation of the original registration to the organ of La Madeleine is a feat of ingenuity.

IMPORTThis second volume of Hyperion’s newest lieder series features the great dramatic and musical

gifts of mezzo-soprano Angelika Kirchschlager. Internationally renowned on the opera stage, the concert hall and the recording studio, Kirchschlager is an ideal performer of these most varied, complex and emotionally charged songs. She is accompanied by the multi-Gramophone Award-winning Julius Drake, who curates the series. The songs recorded here encompass thirty years of Liszt’s life, with texts in German, French and Italian, and contain many examples of the hidden beauties of this undervalued and unknown strand of the composer’s works. Detailed and informative notes by Susan Youens and a beautifully intimate recorded sound complete a volume which will be indispensable to any lover of song.

The combination of Page’s tremendous scholarship, the simple beauty of the singing and the extraordinary freshness of the music is irresistible.

IMPORTMily Balakirev, founder and driving force of the celebrated “Mighty Handful,” spared no effort in his devotion to his followers, and thus left only a relatively modest number of works of his own. The piano occupies a preponderant place in his output, with the Russian style rubbing shoulders with infl uences of Chopin and Liszt. Although Islamey is quite well-known, other pieces deserve to be rediscovered.

His interpretation of Bach’s famous Goldberg Variations is genuinely personal, but never artifi cial or self conscious. Friedrich Gulda and Glenn Gould were notorious for their eccentricities, and this selection of their original compositions for piano refl ect the composers’ specifi c innermost urges and interests. IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDOn this new set from LSO Live, Valery Gergiev conducts Strauss’ Elektra, one of the most powerful operas in the repertoire, accompanied by a superlative cast. The work is a prime example of Strauss’ finest melodic writing. It showcases many, of what were at the time, modernist techniques such as dissonance, chromaticism and fl uid tonality. The one-act Greek tragedy was reconstructed by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, and his adapted text forms the libretto for the opera. The drama centers on Elektra and her determination to avenge her father’s death. The themes of death, violence, sexual repression and revenge are omnipresent. American soprano Jeanne-Michèle Charbonnet is recognized as a leading force in German and contemporary music repertoire. Angela Denoke and Dame Felicity Palmer both possess outstanding pedigrees in Strauss’ operas. They are joined by Lieder specialist Matthias Goerne, making a rare foray into operatic repertoire.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDThis specially priced two disc celebration of the music of Igor Stravinsky features historic stereo recordings made between 1970 to 1987, all remastered for SACD. Ranging from the opulence of The Firebird to the sparse neo-classic L’Histoire du Soldat suite, the repertoire on this set provides the listener with a fascinating survey of Stravinsky’s music from the teens and twenties. Performers include the Tokyo String Quartet, the Boston Symphony Chamber Players and the Czech Philharmonic led by Christoph von Dohnányi.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDPraga continues their Sviatoslav Richter edition with a new SACD reissue of key recordings from the great pianist’s extensive catalog. This duo of “nationalist” concertos by Grieg and Dvorák featured only briefl y in Richter’s repertoire. The uncharacteristic liberty of his playing and the sense of exultation are astounding, illuminating these iconic romantic compositions and highlighting their folkloric connections. These historic recordings have been carefully remastered for the best sonic experience, and offer a rare glimpse into this artist’s unique talents.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ MonoThis Eroica, from the 1952-1953 season, was recorded from concerts and originally released on Tahra on CD in 2003. The recording was made during a period when Wilhelm Furtwängler was in Vienna specifi cally to record a series of Beethoven symphonies for EMI with the Vienna Philharmonic in the Muiskvereinssaal. During this recording session, Furtwängler gave two concerts on 29 and 30 November, the second one’s being recorded by ORF in excellent sound. This new disc reissues the Eroica, carefully remastered for SACD from the original analog tapes.

IMPORTWhy does Kathleen Ferrier, whose career lasted barely a dozen years, remain fi xed in the public memory? Her voice, completely devoid of artifi ce, always expressed the music through her genuine musicality and strong personality. She needed no recourse to the publicity and hype that are so vital in creating and sustaining a singer’s image and career today. This disc is a special remembrance of Ferrier’s rare talent. It features a sampling of the repertoire that made her famous and includes an excerpt from her famous 1952 Mahler Das Lied von der Erde (available on Tahra 482) as well as a newly discovered Das Lied recording from the Austrian Radio from the Salzburg Festival in August 1949, and a short interview of Ferrier.

IMPORTFile in: JazzTom Harrell i s one of the world’s most respected jazz trumpeters and composers . His original works achieve that rare balance between intricacy and musicality, being at once intellectually engaging and emotionally satisfying. Tom’s trumpet and fl ugelhorn playing could be called an art that conceals art; marked with a shrewd lyricism and sensitive tone that argues against technique for technique’s sake, high note grandstanding or oblique reference. In realizing this musical vision, Harrell has surrounded himself with like minded players and it is this, his working band, which has appeared unchanged on all fi ve of his HighNote recordings. The result is a comfort level that approaches musical symbiosis that is rare in jazz today and a recording which is much more than another entry in an already impressive discography, but an event.

IMPORTFile in: JazzThe art of solo jazz piano has a long and illustrious history, which actually predates the art form we have come to call ‘jazz.’ From the earliest ragtime solos of Scott Joplin through to the avant garde jazz ruminations on classical themes of Uri Caine, the list is as extensive as it is star-studded. Larry Willis sits down in the famed Fazioli piano showroom in Italy for his latest HighNote recording which highlights his inexhaustible imagination, the stunning sound of the Fazioli piano and songwriting abilities of the composers represented here. Whether it is Kurt Weill’s hauntingly beautiful “My Ship,” the pop-tinged “True Love” by Cole Porter or his own compositions, Larry Willis displays the intense creativity and impeccable taste which made him the preferred pianist of greats such as Jackie McLean, Nat Adderley, Paul Murphy, Carmen McRae, Lee Morgan, Woody Shaw and others.

IMPORTFile in: JazzAfter his emotional tribute to Gus Viseur in 2010, Marcel Loeffl er decided to record a more personal project, presenting his own compositions. On his new album Images, the accordionist demonstrates the amazing range of his skills. He is equally comfortable in waltzes, ballads or in compositions tuned in to the groove such as “Vago.” Loeffl er also pays tribute to Jacques Brel in his cover of “La chanson des vieux amants.” For this new project, Loeffl er is joined by his friends Gilles Coquard on bass, Jean Yves Jung on piano and Jean Marc Robin on drums.

IMPORTFile in: JazzOn this recording Elisabeth Kontomanou and Geri Allen have cast the net far afi eld for appropriate pieces, not only mixing the traditional with the fairly new, but also undertaking full-scale re-imaginations of iconic R&B-driven themes like the opener, Marvin Gaye’s “God Is Love” and Curtis Mayfi eld’s time-honored classic “People Get Ready.” Fittingly, the album’s hymns reveal some of the stateliest singing of Kontomanou’s career; at times invention tempts her to wade far into music’s choppier waters only to have Allen’s accompaniment, a combination of churning ostinatos and deceptively sparkling chordal runs, safely row her back to shore.

IMPORTFile in: JazzWhen Cedar Walton talks, the jazz world listens, and when Cedar came to Savant Records’ Joe Fields asking to make a record with a young tenor sax player from Bologna, Joe knew that this would be a major talent. Piero Odorici has established quite a name for himself in Italy and is the tenor sax of choice for, not only Cedar Walton when he is touring, but also for George Cables, Curtis Fuller, Jimmy Cobb, Ray Mantilla and others. For his US recording debut, Piero is backed by the Cedar Walton Trio in eight selections made up of jazz standards with a liberal sprinkling of original tunes by each member of the band. Everyone knows it was an Italian who discovered North America. Now it is time for North America to discover this Italian tenorman, Piero Odorici.

IMPORTFile in: JazzPianist Eric Reed has claimed that Monk’s music makes it possible “to travel way out there, if you’re willing to go where it can take you.” On The Baddest Monk, Reed and his colleagues prove more than willing. The Monk classics recorded here illustrate the breadth of Reed’s thought on one of the most idiosyncratic of jazz composers. This is not another Monk tribute album, dragging out the usual suspects for another tired line-up but it is rather a vital, living and insightful re-examination of Monk, both the man and his music, as seen through the imagination of a group of sympathetic and like-minded artists. Reed and his ensemble are able to penetrate to the very core the Monk’s writing, dismantle its component parts and reassemble them so that they contain not only the essence of Monk, but that of the players themselves.

IMPORTFile in: JazzJoe Chambers has been described as one of the great drummers to come out of the ‘60s — a master of dynamics, percussive color and polyrhythmic density. He has performed with most of the modern jazz giants, including Freddie Hubbard, Eric Dolphy, Donald Byrd, Charles Mingus, Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Sonny Rollins, Dizzy Gillespie and the Max Roach M’Boom Ensemble. Chambers has recorded close to 300 albums as a sideman and 10 as a leader. This stellar ensemble, recorded live at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola features top New York jazz and studio musicians such as Craig Handy, David Weiss, Conrad Herwig, Xavier Davis and others. On Moving Pictures Orchestra, Joe Chambers displays a passion for jazz that reaches beyond the confi nes of the studio or bandstand, beyond genre and characterization and extends into the culture itself.

DOMESTICFile in: SoundtrackHoward Shore began writing the score for the massive multiplayer online role-paying game, Soul of the Ultimate Nation (SUN)

in the summer of 2004. In November of that year, Shore was in Moscow conducting The Lord of the Rings Symphony at the Kremlin with the National Philharmonic of Russia and Victor Popov’s Academy of Choral Arts. Following the Moscow concerts he traveled with the orchestra and chorus for another three concerts in Tokyo. “I was still composing the music for SUN at this time and while in Japan I decided I wanted to write the piece specifi cally for this orchestra and chorus,” said Shore. “I wanted the chorus to sing in ancient Korean as a way to express the world of SUN. It seemed like the perfect opportunity to bring together the western and eastern concepts at play. The pieces were composed as tone poems to express the different characters, cultures and the world of this wonderfully detailed game.” The game SUN has gradually made its way around the world although the music has only been released in parts of Asia.

DOMESTICFile in: SoundtrackT h e s o u n d t r a c k f o r C o s m o p o l i s r e u n i t e s composer Howard Shore and the band Metric for another cinematic collaboration. While writing the score for David Cronenberg’s fi lm adaptation of the Don DeLillo novel Cosmopolis, Shore conceived of a particular live sound to achieve his vision and invited Metric to perform the score and co-write three songs. The music was recorded in November 2011 at the band’s own Giant Studios in Toronto, produced by Howard Shore and Metric guitarist Jimmy Shaw, and mixed by John O’Mahony at Liberty Studios in Toronto and Electric Lady Studios in NYC. The result is an atmospheric, urban soundscape of analog synths and layered guitars featuring the hypnotic vocals of Metric lead singer Emily Haines. The Cosmopolis soundtrack also features “Mecca” by Somali Singer/Rapper K’naan with lyrics by the artist and Don DeLillo.

IMPORTFile in: World / AsiaThe duo of Mieko Miyazaki and Guo Gan are based in France. After both musicians left their respective countries of origin, it created the backdrop for a meeting that would have never taken place if neither had left the Far East. And yet, the Japanese koto and Chinese erhu were made to meet just as the guitar of Django Reinhardt with the violin of Stephane Grappelli.

IMPORTFile in: World / Middle East / LebanonIssa’s recent musical creations give a whole new dimension to his music, when his compositions and arrangements combine his unique expression with those from other horizons, other musical languages. He has developed these convergences with several musical genres — from fl amenco to jazz by choosing musicians who are also interested in developing new musical languages. Improvisation, which is still a vital part of this musical genre, stimulates their capacity to explore new forms.
