e Ensemble Clément Janequin has already explored the topic of ‘cries’ – those Renaissance chansons built on a vast onomatopoeic repertory. Now, 28 years after their legendary Cris de Paris, they return to the genre. L’écrit du cri considerably expands the geographical provenance of the ‘cries’ performed – from Marseille to Valenciennes – and features a sometimes disconcerting facility for straddling periods and styles. Hear ye, hear ye!

Several harmonia mundi distributed label releases picked up BBC Music Awards this year. Winners included John Eliot Gardiner’s Bach Cantatas Vol. 27 on Soli deo Gloria, Hyperion’s Fauré and Franck String Quartets by the Dante Quartet and Pieter Wispelwey’s Shostakovich Cello Concerto No.2 on Channel Classics.

This fascinating disc presents three masterworks of our time written by three composers and performed by three orchestras. Concertos by Bruno Mantovani and Gilbert Amy are paired with Philippe Schoeller’s The eyes of the wind. The soloist and the driving force behind this project is the acclaimed cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras — named ‘Artist of the Year 2008’ by the French music magazine Diapason.

“Jean-Guihen Queyras is a supremely gifted performer seemingly incapable of making an unattractive noise.”

It is curious that, considering their revolutionary nature, Mozart’s mature operas are bookended by two opera seria. Written when the composer was 24, Idomeneo demonstrated Mozart’s supreme mastery of orchestral color, accompanied recitatives and melodic line. It was a notable success for the young composer, but shortly after its Munich premiere in 1781 the opera fell into obscurity, a victim of changing tastes. Mozart eventually revised it and a concert performance (with Idamantes now a tenor as well as many other substantive changes) was given in 1786 at the Auersperg palace in Vienna. But it was not until the mid-20th century that Idomeneo became a regular part of the standard operatic repertoire. The opera’s story is typical of the period and the genre — king is pitted against prince, rival princesses against each other and just about everyone against the sea god, Neptune. With his series of distinguished and highly acclaimed Mozart operatic recordings, René Jacobs has shown he is the ideal conductor to revive this dazzling composition. The set includes a bonus DVD (45 minutes) that details the making of this remarkable recording.

All Zones/ 65 Minutes/ 4:3 Aspect Ratio/ MonophonicEnglish counter-tenor Alfred Deller was almost single-handedly responsible for the renaissance of music for counter-tenor in the 20th century. He was also a pioneer in popularizing the practice of authentic early music performance. During the early years of his career,

Deller concentrated on performing English Baroque and pre-Baroque composers such as Purcell and Dowland. His scholarship and musicianship brought him international admiration. In 1950, Deller formed his own vocal and instrumental ensemble, the Deller Consort. From 1955 until 1979 they toured internationally, bringing the music of the Renaissance and Baroque to a new public. During this period, Deller and company made over 50 recordings for harmonia mundi. His uniquely expressive voice brought him legions of admirers and his discs are still highly prized by collectors. In 1975, Benoit Jacquot, then a very young director, met up with Deller to make this documentary-interview, which offers one of the very few fi lmed documents of the most famous countertenor of the modern era. The DVD is accompanied by a CD featuring studio recordings of some of the pieces sung in concert in the fi lm.

It was on returning from a tour of the German concentration camps with Yehudi Menuhin, in 1945, that Benjamin Britten fi nally realized his long-cherished project of setting to music the Holy Sonnets of John Donne. Britten succeeded admirably in conveying their skillful blend of passion and intellectual rigor. Acclaimed British tenor Mark Padmore is sensitively partnered by Roger Vignoles at the piano in this generous program, which also includes Winter Words, set to the poetry of Thomas Hardy.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDCo-commissioned by Carnegie Hall especially for Paul Hillier and Theatre of Voices, David Lang’s The Little Match Girl Passion was awarded the 2008 Pulitzer Prize in Music. Setting Hans Christian Andersen’s fable in the format of Bach’s St Matthew Passion, Lang elevates the suffering of the little match girl with poignant, evocative music. Lang’s piece is scored for four voices and a few percussion instruments, played by the singers. They sing the sad story of a little girl who freezes to death selling matches on the street during a cold winter’s night. In notes Lang wrote to accompany the Carnegie Hall premiere last October, he says he was drawn to Andersen’s story because of how opposite aspects of the plot played off each other. “The girl’s bitter present is locked together with the sweetness of her past memories,” Lang says. “Her poverty is always suffused with her hopefulness. There’s a kind of naïve equilibrium between suffering and hope.”

“I don’t think I’ve ever been so moved by a new, and largely unheralded, composition as I was by David Lang’s Little Match Girl Passion, which is unlike any music I know.”

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThanks to in-depth research into original manuscripts, Jordi Savall reveals the hidden beauties of Irish and Scottish music from XVII to XIXth Century. The transcription from fi ddle to baroque viol sounds so obvious that everyone realizes the closeness of traditional and ancient repertoires at once. Some of the pieces are irresistibly vivid and virtuosic, some are more melancholic - but all of them deserve the renaissance Jordi Savall offers them in this collection, where he partners with harp virtuoso Andrew Lawrence-King.

MENDELSSOHNOrgan Sonatas Op.65Susan Landale (organ)

Calliope • CAL 9751

The Mendelssohn sonatas are established ‘standard repertoire’ items for most organists. Commissioned in London as ‘Voluntaries’ and then published simultaneously in four different countries, they are notable for their lack of consistent form, ranging from two to four movements, and eight to fi fteen minutes in length. Scottish organist Susan Landale graduated from Edinburgh University and then continued her studies with the great French organist André Marchal in Paris. She was later appointed organist of St. George’s Anglican Church, Paris, a post she held for eighteen years. Today, from her home in the Paris suburbs, she pursues a many-sided career of concert organist, church organist and professor.

Lev Oborin studied with Igumnov at the Moscow Conservatory from the age of 14 and in 1927, at the age of 19, he won the fi rst Chopin competition. From this time on until his death he was central to Russian musical life both as performer and teacher (he taught Vladimir Ashkenazy amongst many others). In the West he is perhaps better known as accompanist to the great violinist David Oistrakh, but the present CD presents Oborin as soloist in works by Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt and Tchaikovsky. Neuhaus student Sviatoslav Richter needs no introduction - he is universally regarded as one of the very greatest pianists of the 20th century. This Soviet-era recording, made in the 1950s before he started performing in the west, includes two major works — Schubert’s sonatas D845 and D850. To complete this program APR has added one of the earliest Richter recordings, that of the popular Impromptu D899/4, which dates from 1950.

Hyperion’s Bach piano transcription series, which has done so much to illustrate the unique effect of Bach on the nineteenth-century mind, has reached volume seven with the complete transcriptions by Max Reger. Reger was described by his contemporaries as ‘the modern-day Bach,’ partly because of his frequent use of fugue and other characteristic forms. Therefore it is fascinating to see Reger’s direct response to his predecessor. In the young German virtuoso Markus Becker we have the ideal performer: he has already recorded the complete original piano works of Reger.

British violist Lawrence Power turns his attention to an incalculably important body of work for the instrument: a complete survey of Hindemith’s music for viola. Volume one features the Sonata in F major Opus 11 No.4, a graceful and charming work that may surprise those who are only aware of Hindemith’s place in the European avant-garde. The Sonata Opus 25 No.4, written only three years later, shows the rapid development of Hindemith’s style. It is a lean, rhythmically driven work in which the piano plays an unusually prominent role. Also included on the disc are two later works, the Sonata of 1939 and the Meditation from Nobilissima visione from 1938.

Polyphony’s recordings of contemporary choral music are among Hyperion’s perennial bestsellers and have introduced thousands of listeners to magical new worlds of sound. On this new disc, under their inspirational director, Stephen Layton, the composer Gabriel Jackson gets the Polyphony treatment. Jackson’s uniquely appealing choral works have made him one of the most familiar names in the repertoire today. His liturgical pieces are in the repertoires of many of Britain’s leading cathedral and collegiate choirs and in 2003 he won the liturgical category at the inaugural British Composer Awards. His music is deeply attractive: meditative, contemplative and unashamedly spiritual.

Haydn’s String Quartets of Opus 17 were written during his most effusively productive period, during his tenure in the service of the Esterházy family. These string quartets mark Haydn’s emergence as an indisputably great composer. They have a seriousness of intent and an increasing mastery of rhetoric and thematic development that are a world away from the lightweight divertimento-quartets that he was formerly producing. They are performed here on period instruments by the dazzling London Haydn Quartet.

The Nash Ensemble continues their critically acclaimed survey of Beethoven’s rarer chamber music in an intriguing new disc. Beethoven’s String Quintet of Opus 104 is an arrangement of his revolutionary third piano trio. The music is profoundly Beethovenian in its abrupt, extreme contrasts, violent rhetoric alternating with intense pathos and yearning lyricism. The Piano Quartet in E fl at major is an arrangement of his quintet for piano and winds and owes a debt to Mozart in general and his piano and wind quintet in particular. The disc is completed by a delightful miniature, the Eyeglass Duo.

“This is magnificent — vocal recitals don’t come any better.”

— CLASSICSTODAY.COM

The award-winning partnership of Gerald Finley and Julius Drake continues their musical explorations with this beautiful and thought-provoking disc. Finley’s lustrous tones, extraordinary gift for characterization, and direct, unaffected utterance make him an ideal and revelatory performer of Ravel’s songs. These works, somewhat under-appreciated in the composer’s oeuvre, demonstrate the endless variety and vast emotional scope of Ravel’s musical sphere. Charming folk-song settings contrast with the almost surrealist world of Histoires naturelles, which caused outrage at its fi rst performance. In the words of Roger Nichols, who provides the fascinating booklet notes, “From the sepulchral gloom of ‘Un grand sommeil noir’ to the fi nal exclamation ‘Je bois / À la joie,’ Ravel’s songs embrace a whole world.”

Previously Available as CDA 66975 (034571169750) Deleted January 2008This CD presents recordings of two of Scottish late-Romantic Sir Alexander Mackenzie’s concerted works for violin including the Pibroch Suite of 1881. The word ‘pibroch’ is taken from bagpipe music where it denotes a classical style (usually in variation form) rather than the more usual ‘strathspey and reel’ type of dance music associated with the instrument. The concerto dates from 1885 and was written for Sarasate.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDMany of Sir Colin Davis’s recent releases on LSO Live have featured his favorite choral works, including Beethoven’s Mass in C, Mozart’s Requiem and Handel’s Messiah. The next release in the series features Haydn’s masterpiece Die Schöpfung (The Creation) — a work that Davis has (surprisingly) never previously recorded. Sir Colin is joined by a sensational set of singers for his recording. Soprano Sally Matthews is joined by Ian Bostridge and Dietrich Henschel. Having been inspired by Handel’s oratorios whilst in London, Haydn set Die Schöpfung to a text originally intended for his predecessor. With bright orchestration and vivid imagery, Haydn’s account of the world’s creation confi rmed that he too had mastered the art of musical dramatics and composed a work that is celebrated as one of the masterpieces of the classical era.

It will showcase the extraordinary talent within the theatre and orchestra, presenting works that are both familiar and less well known. Under the leadership of Valery Gergiev, the Mariinsky’s international reputation has grown through frequent touring and recordings. It recently reverted to the Mariinsky name, having previously been known more widely by its Communist-era name of Kirov. The Nose is one of the young Shostakovich’s greatest masterpieces, an electrifying tour de force of vocal acrobatics, wild instrumental colors and theatrical absurdity. In his fi rst dramatic work the composer immediately showed himself to be a master of musical drama, as well as a born avant-garde experimenter. The plot is based on the one of the most famous stories in Russian literature. A pompous government offi cial, Kovalyov, wakes up one day to fi nd that his nose has taken on a life of its own and gone for a walk around the city of St. Petersburg. The result, in Shostakovich’s ruthlessly irreverent hands, is like an operatic version of Monty Python.

“The uniform excellence of the company’s singing is unrivalled by any western opera company in this repertoire: Shostakovich’s dementedly high tenor parts

were sung with astonishing accuracy.”— THE GUARDIAN

Frederico Ricci’s Corrado d’Altamura is a dramma lirico that opened at La Scala in 1841. Set in 12th-century Sicily, the highly dramatic plot tells of betrayal and then revenge between Roggero, the Duke of Agrigento and his former friend and tutor, Corrado, to whose daughter, Delizia, Roggero has promised marriage - only to break his vows. The great expert in 19th-century Italian opera Julian Budden thought Ricci’s serious works, “are worthy to stand beside Mercadante’s.” This is the sixth opera in the Essential Opera Rara series and, once again, a vivid impression of the work is captured on a single disc, accompanied by a complete libretto and article by the eminent 19th century musical scholar, Jeremy Commons.

The Juniper Tree is an opera composed by Philip Glass and Robert Moran with a libretto by Arthur Yorinks and is based on a tale collected by the Brothers Grimm. The opera was first produced in 1985 at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge Massachusetts. This very grim (no pun intended) story of death, rebirth and love is accompanied by wonderful music. The work, a collaboration between composers Philip Glass and Robert Moran, is an incredibly lyrical and compelling score. This recording features performances by principal singers Jayne West, Sanford Sylvan, Valerie Walters and Lynn Torgove.

“The mood is more than sustained by the two composers, whose music dovetails remarkably well.”

These two SACDs of chamber music by Mendelssohn feature compositions from the composer’s youth. In these works, glittering echoes of A Midsummer Night’s Dream are deftly blended with avant-garde declamations reminiscent of the recently-deceased Beethoven. The works featured here aptly demonstrate the precocious genius of a musician described by Schumann as, “The Mozart of the 19th century... he is the brightest composer of the age and he comprehends, with fi nest humor, the contradictions of our time more clearly than anyone, so that he is the fi rst to reconcile them.”

After cutting his teeth leading second class orchestras, Wilhelm Furtwängler’s reputation grew quickly and by the late 1920’s he was considered one of the world’s musical stars. But the Nazi era forced him to make a choice. Furtwängler opted to stay in Berlin as an exile in his own country. With the end of the war, he was given the opportunity to rejoin European musical culture, promoting humanity in music. But times were changing, and he was perceived more than ever as disconnected from “modernity.” Today, these performances sound somewhat anachronistic, but aptly demonstrate the full-blooded romantic style that was Furtwängler’s forte.

Carl Schuricht was born in Danzig in 1880 and at the time of his death in Switzerland in 1967 was considered one of the last exponents of the Austro-German tradition. In his early career, Schuricht conducted a lot of modern music, but (like many of his contemporaries) gradually concentrated more on the great composers of the past. Although he lived to be 87, Carl Schuricht didn’t leave a vast commercial discography. On the other hand, there are many live recordings in various European radio archives, mainly German and Swiss. That’s the case of the present recording coming from Hamburg. This disc features Beethoven’s seventh symphony (recorded in 1957) and Brahms’ fourth symphony (recorded in 1958).

John Cage had a particular predilection for poetry. “Poetry,” he wrote, “is not poetry by reason of its content or ambiguity, but by reason of its allowing musical elements (time, sound) to be introduced into the world of words.” And the composer said about Stefano Scodanibbio, who transcribed the Freeman Etudes and Dream for contrabass and in this recording also serves as the conductor of Concert for Piano and Orchestra and Radio Music, “I haven’t heard better double bass playing than Scodanibbio’s. He’s really extraordinary... absolutely magic.”

Born in Palma de Majorca, she moved to Barcelona at the end of the 60’s and formed part of what was called “La Nova Canco” (The New Song), an artistic movement that emerged during the fi nal years of General Franco’s dictatorship. Other famous members of the movement are Joan Manuel Serrat and Lluis Llach. Raixa (the name of a garden in Majorca), was recorded in concert at Plaça Del Rei Barcelona and celebrates Bonet’s 25th year of concerts in this venue.

DVD: 48 minutes/ Dolby Digital StereoFile in: World/ Europe/ GreeceOn Comme un jardin la nuit, Angelique Ionatos is joined by the young Greek singer Katerina Fotinaki for a collection of duets with guitar, recorded live. The deluxe CD-Book packaging includes a bonus DVD with selections from the concert. Ionatos describes their ‘walk in a garden at night’ as a meeting that was ordained by destiny. She says, “When we meet people I do not think it happens by chance. I believe that we meet because we are meant to do so. When the time is right. Katerina Fotinaki is the ‘little’ sister I would have liked to have... I feel as if we were distant cousins who once played together among the same trees in the same gardens.”

File in: World/ Europe/ RussiaFronted by the achingly melancholic voice of artist and singer Irina Doubrovskaja, and peopled by a half dozen Soviet émigrés who escaped the turmoil of Russia following the end of Cold War for the artistic communes of East Berlin, ErsatzMusika are the ghost in the machine of 21st-century music. Their sound is unique — rootsy Russian urban folk without insulation and throwing off sparks. The thirteen strange and singular tracks on Songs Unrecantable are like a hall of mirrors refl ecting the psychic landscapes of old Russia back onto the crazy realities of 21st-century Mittel-Europa and turning them loose into some of the strangest songs on the planet.

File in: NostalgiaDuring his long career, Frank Chacksfi eld was one of Decca’s most prolifi c and successful recording artists, turning out album after album of quality light orchestral music in various styles. 1961’s My Gypsy Love features music with a romantic, Gypsy fl avor. The second album in this release focuses on some of the most enchanting melodies from some of the most enduring operas.

File in: NostalgiaDecca used the 1966 album Mantovani Magic to spearhead their sales campaign for that year; it was also the company’s way of honoring Mantovani, who had brought so much success and kudos to the label. If you’ve never heard a Mantovani album, then this is the one to start with because it is typical of his elegant orchestral style and features a choice collection of truly romantic melodies. Concert Encores was recorded at the end of 1957 and sees Mantovani turning to the world of light classics for inspiration.
