Following his highly acclaimed disc of Beethoven sonatas, Gramophone-award-winning artist Steven Osborne turns his talents to the composer’s complete Bagatelles. On this polished album, Osborne lends his remarkable artistry to everything from the Six Bagatelles of Op 126, which at times occupy the same rarefi ed spiritual world as the late quartets, to the composer’s most famous stand-alone piano piece, the mysterious work known to all the world as Für Elise.

“Steven Osborne [has] that very special ability to make music that you thought you knew inside out seem fresh and totally alive.”

DOMESTICSACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDDonald Johanos conducts the Dallas Symphony Orchestra on this audiophile classic. During his eight-year tenure as conductor, Johanos made notable recordings with the DSO, including this 1967 rendition of Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances. He also appointed Paul Freeman associate conductor, one of the fi rst blacks to serve in such a post in the Southern US, prompting threats to both conductors. The tape recording was made at a speed of thirty inches-per-second and a specially developed constant-velocity recording curve was employed for improved signal-to-noise ratio. The lacquer masters were made directly from the original tape, thus avoiding further transfer degradation. The result is a recording of exceptional clarity.

IMPORTOn this fascinating disc, the Freiburger BarockConsort has chosen to illustrate the compositions of Johann Heinrich Schmelzer as elements in a “world theatre.” This is an ideal concept for exploring the multiple facets of one of the great masters of 17th-century Austrian instrumental music, whose sonatas and dance suites had such influence both at the Habsburg court for which they were written and with the composers who followed in his footsteps (notably Biber).

“Schmelzer’s folk-influenced music is full of invention and easy charm and the superb Freiburger Barock Consort

make it spring to life.”— THE GUARDIAN

IMPORTIn 2004, Bernarda Fink re leased a recording of Dvorák songs that created a genuine sensation, winning numerous awards including a Diapason de l’Année. Now, eight years later, she returns to the music of Dvorák, this time teaming up with young soprano Genia Kühmeier for an album of solo songs and duets. Kühmeier takes the lead in the Gypsy Melodies, songs that blend a striking range of color with a subtle use of the folk idiom. A highlight of the disc is a selection of thirteen of the Moravian Duets, works that brought the young Dvorák fame far beyond his homeland. Completing this vocal portrait are Fink’s solemn interpretations of the Biblical Songs, possibly Dvorák’s fi nest effort in the genre.

“A musician of an older and more dignified school, valuing refinement, subtlety and sensibility over fireworks, and she never sings louder than lovely.”

IMPORTTo celebrate their 25th anniversary, Trio Wanderer presents a complete set of the piano trios of Ludwig van Beethoven. Already established within Viennese culture by Haydn and Mozart, the trio genre was taken to new limits by the inexhaustible imagination of Beethoven’s genius. The piano trios span much of Beethoven’s compositional output, from the early works of WoO 38 and 39 to the glorious Archduke Trio, written late in the ‘middle’ period.

IMPORTMatthias Goerne’s ongoing survey of Schubert lieder for harmonia mundi has further confirmed his reputation as one of the most gifted

exponents of the song repertoire. Goerne does not ‘interpret’ Schubert; he lives each lied from the inside and invites the listener to share this poetic and musical intimacy. The sixth volume in the series focuses on Schubert’s monumental Schwanengesang. This posthumous collection was named by its fi rst publisher, who presented it as Schubert’s fi nal musical testament. Also included as a bonus is an unforgettable performance of Schubert’s other swan song, the piano sonata D.960, played by one of the baritone’s favorite partners, Christoph Eschenbach.

“Matthias Goerne is fast becoming the Fischer-Dieskau of his generation, the standard-setting singer of the central lieder repertoire.”

IMPORTOn this two disc set featuring Tchaikovsky’s complete String Quartets and the Souvenir de Florence, the IPO Richter String Quartet tackles some of the most important works of the period. “It is a terrible irony,” wrote Vladimir Ashkenazy, “that so much suffering and torment bequeathed us so much wonderful music.” In 1875, following the death of Ferdinand Laub (the violinist who had led the fi rst performances of his two previous quartets) Tchaikovsky experienced a creative surge that led to the third quartet, and arguably one of his greatest contributions to the repertoire.

On this set, Bertini conducts the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in a live recording of Berlioz’s The Damnation of Faust from 1996 coupled with music from Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloé recorded live in 1974. IMPORTComposer and conductor Bob Chilcott (born 1955) has been steeped in the British choral tradition since he was a boy chorister. A former member of The King’s Singers, he is now one of the UK’s most prolifi c and creative choral composers. His Requiem is characterized by a gentle atmosphere clearly modeled on Fauré, with a crystalline, refl ective Pie Jesu at the emotional heart of the work. This collection of fi rst recordings is beautifully performed by Matthew Owens leading the Wells Cathedral Choir, The Nash Ensemble and two superb young soloists.

IMPORTAcclaimed sopranos Lorna Anderson and Lisa Milne, two of Britain’s leading exponents of French song, join pianist Malcolm Martineau for the second volume of Hyperion’s overview of Debussy’s haunting, mercurial songs. The French composer’s output in this genre spanned his whole life, from adolescent attempts to set Paul Verlaine’s Fêtes galantes to the Trois Poèmes de Mallarmé, written fi ve years before his death. All inhabit a universe of shifting colors and impressions, from the sensual Chansons de Bilitis to the Proses lyriques, which foreshadow the dreamlike atmosphere of Pelléas et Mélisande.

IMPORTErik Chisholm was a fascinating musical polymath — a composer, conductor and performer as well as a collector of folk music from his native Scotland. Born in Glasgow in 1904, his attitude to music was progressive, looking towards central European modernism (he was dubbed ‘MacBartók’). Chisholm’s understanding and mastery of the piano is evident in his two concertos. The fi rst, Pìobaireachd (bagpipe music), uses sinuous traditional Scottish themes to thrilling effect in a work that is both exotic and lyrical. The Hindustani concerto was inspired by Chisholm’s posting to the Far East during the Second World War and friendship with Sorabji. Rising star Danny Driver is the soloist alongside the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Rory Macdonald in these captivatingly original works.

IMPORTThe colorful folk melodies and infectious rhythms of Spain knit seamlessly with twentieth-century French compositional sophistication in Joaquín Turina’s chamber works. Born in Seville, Andalucia, the young composer went to study in Paris in 1905, where he was greatly attracted to the forward-looking style of the likes of Debussy. However, his musical course was altered when he encountered countrymen Falla and Albéniz, who encouraged him to write in a style that fully embraced his Andalucian musical heritage. Later in life, the composer himself explained, “my music is the expression of the feeling of a true Sevillian who did not know Seville until he left it.” On this release, the acclaimed Nash Ensembledemonstrate what a satisfying artistic homecoming he made.

IMPORTPreviously Available as CDA 67048 (034571170480) Deleted July 2010Starting in the eleventh century, Venetian mariners gathered together once a year to offer prayers to San Nicolò, the patron saint of sailors, asking for his continued protection. Initially the service was a simple benediction in which the Adriatic Sea was blessed with holy water. However, by the late-sixteenth century the ceremony had evolved into one of the most lavish and important dates in the Venetian calendar. Ascension Day now launched a large spring festival which was headed by the symbolic wedding of Venice to the Adriatic: the Sposalizio. IMPORTHerbert Howells was acutely sensitive to the transience of life, having witnessed the loss of friends and contemporaries in the First World War and encountered deep personal tragedy when his son Michael died of polio at the age of only nine. As a result, a mood of elegiac yearning inhabits much of his choral music. This fl avor is exemplifi ed by the austere Requiem and the elegant Take him, earth, for cherishing, commissioned to commemorate the death of President John F. Kennedy. And yet Howells could write magnifi cently thrilling music too, as demonstrated by the fresh brilliance of A Hymn for St. Cecilia and the spine-tingling grandeur of the St. Paul’s Service. All of these works are lovingly performed here by the young voices of Trinity College Choir, Cambridge led by Stephen Layton.

IMPORTOn A due Cembali, keyboard players Aline Zylberajch and Martin Gester give us a sample of what might have been heard in an 18th-century salon. The capricious program of this disc features works by Italian, Austrian, German and Spanish composers that are rich with such programmatic effects as birdsongs and musical clocks. These solos and duets, played on harpsichords and positif organs, display glowing orchestral textures, wild Hispanic rhythms and crazy Viennese waltzes, tender serenades and of course, delirious counterpoint.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDFollowing his acclaimed LSO Live recording of Rachmaninov’s Symphony No 2 (a Gramophone Ed i to r ’s Cho ice ) , Vale r y Gergiev offers an equally thrilling performance of the composer’s Symphonic Dances. The Symphonic Dances, an orchestral suite in three sections, was the last work Rachmaninov completed, and proved one of his most popular compositions. It is characteristically lyrical with vivacious rhythmic sections, reminiscent of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring and the composer’s own Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Gergiev couples the Symphonic Dances with another work in three movements by a Russian émigré to the USA. Stravinsky’s Symphony in Three Movements was written between 1942-45 and was the fi rst work the Stravinsky completed after his arrival in America.

IMPORTThe two violin concertos on this recording occupy a major place in Shostakovich’s output and document especially diffi cult periods in his life. The condemnation of his music in 1948 and the subsequent “wilderness years” are shown in the Concerto No.1 and the incessant health problems Shostakovich endured after 1963 are echoed in the Concerto No.2, a work that marked his first dodecaphonic experiments. Violinist Sayaka Shoji offers brilliant and virtuosic readings of these powerful masterpieces, characterized by their somber emotional hues, sarcastic outbursts of the fast movements, and the fi endish diffi culties of the cadenzas.

IMPORTPhilippe Pierlot and his superb Ricercar Consort present the two Apothéoses by François Couperin, written in the memory of Arcangelo Corelli and Jean-Baptiste Lully respectively. Behind them is an aesthetic concept — they are a plea for the mixture of the Italian and the French style, or the so-called goûts réunis. Couperin’s Apothéoses are in the tradition of the tombeau, and therefore the Tombeau de Monsieur de Lully by Jean-Féry Rebel is a perfect pairing to complete this disc of French Baroque masterworks.

Offered in coordination with the release of Chinese pianist Zhu Xiao-Mei’s heartbreaking and heartwarming new book, this disc from Mirare exemplifi es the unique and compelling musicianship of a special artist. The Secret Piano (ISBN 978-1611090772 released March 6, 2012) is the incredible true story of one woman’s survival in the face of unbelievable odds — and in pursuit of a powerful dream. A child prodigy, Xiao-Mei was just ten years old when she began a rigorous course of study at the Beijing Conservatory. But when the Cultural

Revolution began, art schools were closed, and Xiao-Mei was sent to a labor camp in Mongolia, where she would spend the next fi ve years. When the Revolution ended, it was the piano that helped her to heal. Today, Xiao-Mei deliberately keeps her concerts few and far between. She appears in public only to perform especially demanding works, ‘mountains of the soul’ which she judges essential, in interpretations matured over a long period of gestation. Her worldwide success is especially amazing given that her career very nearly never took place at all.

IMPORTThe Kuss Quartet’s Onyx debut of Schubert and Berg was praised by reviewers worldwide. With Theme Russe, the group offers listeners an enchanting program of Russian music for string quartet. The multiple-composer Variations on a Russian Folk Song has composers such as Scriabin, Rimsky-Korsakov, Glazunov and Lyadov rub shoulders with lesser-known names such as Vitols, Blumenfeld, Ewald, Winkler, Sokolov and Artsybuschev — each composer contributing one variation. Selections from Tchaikovsky’s Album for the Young are followed by two 20th-century works — Stravinsky’s effervescent Concertino, and Schnittke’s spare and somber Canon in memoriam Igor Stravinsky. Tchaikovsky’s ever-popular fi rst String Quartet concludes this ingenious recital.

IMPORTMacedonian violinist Emilio Percan makes his recording debut with this album of Baroque music for violin for Onyx. Also premiering here are the Sonatas of Giovanni Antonio Piani (1678–1760), one of the most important violinists of the Baroque. Piani’s reputation as a composer rests solely upon these twelve Sonatas, published in 1712 (all his other works are lost). In an unusually long and detailed preface, Piani provided highly detailed instructions on bowing, fi ngering, dynamics, ornamentation and tempi. In effect, this is the most detailed instruction manual for students of the Baroque violin and the performance practice of the day. These fascinating works are paired with music by Piani’s better-known contemporaries, Handel and Geminiani. Percan’s sparkling performances will be of interest to anyone who loves Baroque music.

DOMESTICIn its first year of performance, Handel’s 1736 opera Atalanta, recently revived for the fi rst time since the 18th century, concluded with a spectacular display of fi reworks. The fi reworks on this live recording from 2005, featuring the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra led by Nicholas McGegan, are defi nitely of the vocal variety. The San Francisco Chronicle raved, “Magnifi cent... the most vibrant, exhilarating stretch of musical showmanship this organization has offered in many a long season. Not since a decade ago have Philharmonia audiences witnessed a performance so deep, so affecting or so rich in musical splendor... The music is inventive and beautiful throughout… McGegan, a consummate master of this style, led a performance that was at once tender and vivacious, brisk and rhythmically free. .. Even in a cast without a weak link, soprano Dominique Labelle stood out for the grandeur and pathos of her singing in the title role… a breathtaking performance.”

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDIMPORTThe gestation of Les Noces was the longest of all the works written by Igor Stravinsky. In 1917, he fi nished the drafting of the musical material, but it took six years to complete the fi nal orchestration. This fascinating recording offers the listener a chance to compare the 1919 original version (which may be considered by some to be more ‘authentic’) with the fi nal version from 1923. Performed by the Choir of Radio France conducted by René Bosc, this SACD also includes a bonus of Stravinsky’s Étude pour Pianola, which was also written in 1917.

The repertoire includes Mozart’s Concerto for Flute and Harp, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concertowith Yehudi Menuhin, Brahms’ Symphony No.1 and the popular Variations on a Theme of Haydn. IMPORTFile In: JazzSonny Amati Schmitt, son of Dorado Schmitt, is only sixteen — but his reputation as a Gypsy jazz guitarist has already spread around the world. He appeared alongside his father in the Jazz in Vienne Festival in 2010, and for six days of the Django Reinhardt Festival he played at New York’s Birdland Club (where he was congratulated by Leonard Di Caprio, who’d gone there especially to hear him). Several of the well-known jazz strongholds have programmed him, including the Festivals of Lyon, Monaco, and Colmar and the New Morning in Paris. For his fi rst solo album, Sonny Amati Schmitt is accompanied by his brother Bronson on rhythm guitar, Xavier Nikq on double bass and Dorado Schmitt on Peruvian cajón and the violin. The tracks on Sonny Day are a deft combination of waltzes, swing, bossa and ballads in the purest Reinhardt tradition.

IMPORTFile In: JazzFrançois Chassagnite was one of the greatest French jazz trumpeters. He toured around the world and sat in with many of the greats, from Chet Baker to Canadian Gil Evans and Malian Salif Keita. He was a regular organizer of the famous Marciac Jazz Festival’s master classes, where he used to invite Wynton Marsalis and other great US jazz players like Terence Blanchard. Chassagnite passed away last summer and this album was his last recording session. Chat-ssagnite is a fi tting homage to this major fi gure in European jazz. In the November 1983 issue of Jazz Hot, Chet Baker was asked if he heard a lot of good trumpeters in the new generation. He said, “Oh, not a lot. IMPORTFile In: JazzClara Ponty is one of those rare artists whose enticing voice and virtuoso level playing fuses her classical heritage with jazz and pop rhythms into a seamless stream of captivating sounds. The seductive musical universe of the singer and pianist unfolds in this enchanting jazz album that displays Ponty’s unique style of writing. Into The Light is co-produced by Stuart Bruce (Frankie goes to Hollywood, Yes, Loreena McKennitt, Kate Bush) and Clara Ponty and is the fi rst to feature her mainly as a singer. Guest artists including Nigel Kennedy, Vincent Segal, Damien Smitt and her father Jean-Luc Ponty add their talents to this album. Clara Ponty’s songs cover a wide range of subjects including her own spiritual path, her view on our modern life, and personal life experiences. These eleven gems feature refi ned arrangements fi lled with charm and memorable melodies.

IMPORTFile In: World / Africa / CongoAward-winning French writer Alain Mabanckou is the driving force behind the band Black Bazar. For this project, he challenged his musicians to take rumba back to its roots, rejecting the machines and programming that have done so much to water down today’s Congolese (and African) music. Mabanckou’s goal was to restore a genre that was originally intended not only to be great dance music, but also to be a delight to listen to. The band’s front men, Modogo Abarambwa and Sam Tshintu (veterans of Koffi Olomide’s Quartier Latin and the band Académia) are joined here by a variety of stellar guest artists. Both the band’s name and album title are taken from Mabanckou’s novel Black Bazar, published by Le Seuil in 2009. The book was intended to be the fi rst part of a trilogy that would be completed by a music album (this release, produced by Mabanckou) and a fi lm, written by Mabanckou, to be produced in the next months and released in 2013. The novel will be published in English by Serpents Tail in May 2012.

DOMESTICFile In: World / Asia / IndiaIn October 2011, at the seasoned age of 91, Ravi Shankar invited his long-time tabla accompanist, Tanmoy Bose, to his home in Encinitas, California for an informal recording session. Over four days, they worked in Shankar’s living room, recording seven different ragas. The resulting music is pure Shankar — a pairing of deep musical experience and brilliant technique performed with the energy and passion he brings to his live concerts. The fi rst of two releases, The Living Room Sessions, Part 1, holds four tracks that span a wide range of Indian classical styles. As with his live performances, the emotion in the sitar maestro’s playing as he and Bose exchange improvisational phrasings is powerful. Both intimate and masterly, The Living Room Sessions, Part 1 is an invitation into the home and musical genius of Ravi Shankar. Release of a second disc is scheduled for the fall of 2012.
