Idomeneo, Mozart’s rst operatic masterpiece, premiered two days before his 25th birthday. It is a thrilling mix of orid vocal writing and eloquent orchestral episodes and represents the nal, glorious metamorphosis of the opera seria genre. Continuing his series of distinguished Mozart operatic recordings, René Jacobs turns his atten-tion to this seminal work. e recording features the complete text Mozart intended for the work’s Munich premiere in 1781.

The Fantazia for consort of viols is one of the glories of English music, and this unique repertoire, spreading over nearly two centuries, represents the loftiest and most perfect kind of instrumental chamber music written in Europe before the era of the classical string quartet. In his Fantazias for viol, the young Henry Purcell put into practice all he had absorbed in the course of his technical and stylistic training. These pieces are a perfect illustration of his avowed ambition to surpass all his contemporaries. Formed in 1986, Fretwork is a consort of viols based in the United Kingdom. The group’s repertoire consists primarily of music of the Renaissance period, in particular that of Elizabethan and Jacobean England, arrangements of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and contemporary music written specially for them.

With Die schöne Müllerin, the lied ceases to be mere entertainment: the singer has to free himself from the role of neutral observer and identify with the tragic character of the traveler. Matthias Goerne is capable like no one else of donning this costume with the acute awareness that disappointment, melancholy, and death are always at the end of the road. This is the third volume of Matthias Goerne’s Schubert cycle, a series that has already created quite a stir, garnering a Gramophone Editor’s Choice and a Choc du Monde de la Musique, among other awards.

In writing four Impromptus that look towards the sonata model and a sonata entitled Fantasie, it would appear that

Schubert was trying out all the possibilities of cyclic construction. These experiments in form opened up new perspectives that would further extend the conventional limits of the Classical tradition. All of these works were written within two years of his death and fi nd the composer at the height of his powers. Andreas Staier’s interest in the fortepiano fl owered when he discovered the difference in sound and interpretation that results when that instrument is used for playing composers contemporary with it, especially Mozart and Beethoven. He is one of the rare classical keyboard players who specialize in both harpsichord and fortepiano.

Schumann: Hommage a Bachharmonia mundi • HMC 901989 (794881891429)

“A new and invaluable perspective on Schumann.”— INTERNATIONAL RECORD REVIEW

Handel wrote the solo sonatas of Opus 1 for the professional m u s i c i a n s o f h i s L o n d o n opera orchestra. They demand considerable skill and stamina both from the soloist and the continuo. Prominent bass parts give the sonatas a contrapuntal strength and vitality, and Handel keeps the elements of display and purely musical argument in admirable balance in these works. For this reason, they are among the most attractive Baroque solo sonatas and deserve their lasting popularity. Played here by members of the Academy of Ancient Music under the leadership of Richard Egarr, Handel’s delightful sonatas are shown to be true masterpieces written by a composer at the height of his powers.

Phil Kline returns with John the Revelator, his third full length release from Cantaloupe Music. It is inspired by his memories of being a teenager in Ohio and Pennsylvania, what he recalls as, “unforgettable and mysterious beauty, the sound of the strong emotion, unconditional and utterly lacking in malice, that I remember from rural religion.” Sources include Blind Willie Johnson’s John the Revelator, the Old Testament, and American poet David Shapiro. The result is a 21st century mass, featuring world-class string quartet, Ethel, and the six voices of renowned early music vocal ensemble, Lionheart.

“Plaintive, searching melodies and playful counterpoint in movements that suggest the tonal richness of Barber, the austerity of Stravinsky, and the harmonic piquancy of Ligeti.”

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDTrombonist Jörgen van Rijen says regarding his inspiration for this disc, “I heard an American soldier say, ‘I was like wow’ when he was describing his violent experiences during the Iraq war. This showed me that words and exclamations like ‘wow’ are used to indicate that something has made a deep impression, regardless of whether that impression is positive or negative. That’s what gave me the idea of fi nding pieces for my new CD, ‘I was like wow!’ that had all impressed me deeply for all different kinds of reasons, pieces that for some reason had given me a ‘wow’ feeling.” This hybrid SACD also contains a CD layer with a video track.

The Chicago Symphony Chorus takes center stage in two gorgeous French works from the twentieth century. Poulenc’s effervescent Gloria features up-and-coming soprano Jessica Rivera’s recording debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The scenario for Ravel’s ballet Daphnis et Chloé was adapted by choreographer Michel Fokine from a third century romance by the Greek writer Longus. At almost an hour, Daphnis et Chloé is Ravel’s longest work and the music is widely regarded as some of the composer’s fi nest and most passionate.

From the early Violin Sonata onwards, Szymanowski displays a special brilliance in writing for solo violin. The Romance already reveals the exotic, strangely inward exaltation of his mature works and the extraordinary Mythes exemplifies the zenith of Szymanowski’s artistry. This recording features the talented young violinist Alina Ibragimova, who appears on her third Hyperion disc. She is accompanied by French pianist and harmonia mundi label regular Cédric Tiberghien.

The chamber music of composer Frank Bridge, best remembered as the teacher of Benjamin Britten, reveals the composer’s strong French influence, the dance-like quality of his writing darkened with a brooding inspiration, and the music’s dramatic and emotional heart. Featured here are the early Idylls, the ambitious Piano Quintet and the extraordinary fourth String Quartet, Bridge’s last chamber work. The Goldner Quartet is joined by pianist Piers Lane.

Steven Osborne’s live performances of Rachmaninov’s Preludes were greeted ecstatically by critics and audience alike. They were hailed as a new benchmark for performances of these works and a new departure for this most subtle and sensitive of pianists. Osborne’s matchless musicianship has rarely been as blazingly evident as it is here. Also apparent is his deeply individual relationship with the repertoire. This is a disc to treasure.

William Mathias’ choral writing draws on a variety of musical traditions, is immediately accessible and likeable whilst demonstrating an architectural sophistication that places it in the top rank of twentieth-century liturgical music. His music features a Celtic mysticism and deep spirituality that enhances such works as All wisdom is from the Lord and O nata lux. This disc includes a comprehensive selection of his works for choir and organ. It is performed by the Wells Cathedral Choir, whose delightfully full-throated, vibrant sound is the perfect vehicle for this repertoire.

Christopher Herrick continues the Scandinavian leg of his endlessly popular Organ Fireworks series with a disc of music performed on the great organ of Västeras Cathedral in Sweden. The program is, as ever, a tempting potpourri of pieces from around the world, some popular, some rare; some light-hearted and some serious, and demonstrating all facets of virtuoso writing for the organ. Highlights include Durufl é’s Choral Varié on Veni Creator, a work of immense grandeur and majesty. The performance shows Herrick to be a master of the classic French idiom.

“Choral work by Layton almost needs no qualifications.”— AUDIOPHILE AUDITION

In a year of Handel celebration and many new recordings, this is a particularly welcome addition to the discography. Stephen Layton leads the Academy of Ancient Music, the Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge and a stellar group of soloists in three of Handel’s beloved Chandos Anthems. Written for the musical establishment of the first Duke of Chandos, these anthems set texts taken from the Psalms, mainly the old version of the Psalter as preserved in the Book of Common Prayer, but also the metrical versions of Nahum Tate and Nicholas Brady, fi rst published in 1696. The expressive range of the solos is remarkable and in the choruses Handel seizes every opportunity to create grand effects with modest means.

“The Academy of Ancient Music is well practiced in this period’s music and accompanies as to the manner born.”

Sure to be one of the major releases of 2009, Onyx presents Viktoria Mullova’s fi rst complete recording of the Sonatas & Partitas. Mullova recorded the Partitas on a modern violin for Philips in the early 90s, but had never recorded the Sonatas. In the meantime, her interpretations have been transformed by her studies in Baroque practice and her subsequent performances with masters such as Gardiner, Harnoncourt, Antonini and Il Giardino Armonico. The music of Ludovico Einaudi is deeply rooted in the classical tradition. However, the pianist and composer stretches the boundaries of orthodox defi nitions of the genre and creates music that defi es easy categorization. In 2006, Einaudi toured Europe with the popular German electronica artists Robert & Ronald Lippok. These artists’ exceptional improvisatory collaboration is what makes Cloudland such an exceptional recording. The album title comes from a paradise-like retreat mentioned in Amos Tutuola’s novel The Palm-Wine Drinkard. This is not the fi rst effort to merge electronics with classical music. Carsten Nicolai worked with Ryuichi Sakamoto, Carl Craig and Moritz von Oswald injected Ravel’s Bolero with a techno twist. Today, a whole new generation of musicians are as comfortable with a laptop as with classical instruments. Einaudi and the Lippoks have created a masterpiece for this new and growing audience.

The Unfi nished is worthy of comparison with Furtwangler’s recordings in Berlin (1950) and Vienna (1951). In Tchaikovsky, his relentless vision of the 4th Symphony, in Mravinsky’s repertoire starting in 1938, comes vividly back to life. In listening to it, one is unsure of whether they are witnessing a funeral ritual or rite closer to sacrifi ce. Praga has lovingly restored and remastered the original 1959 recordings for SACD, and the medium presents these musical treasures in the best sound possible.

File in: World / Europe / RomaniaAlmost three years on from Kal’s groundbreaking debut album, band leader Dragan Ristic is excited about the release of Radio Romanista. “We went from being this tiny Belgrade band to touring Europe and the US, hearing DJs blast our music in clubs, playing festivals, getting to spread the word and music of the Roma.” For Kal’s fi rst CD, Ristic drew upon a pool of Belgrade Roma musicians, but for Radio Romanista he relied upon the musicians who now compromise Kal’s touring band. “What you get here is our live sound. We spend a lot of time touring and playing clubs along the Danube, bars that put on live music. This has really shaped our sound, it’s Rock’n’roma! I strongly believe this album leads a new wave of Gypsy music.” Serbian rapper Marcelo cameos with the band on the fi rst track of the CD, “Krasnokalipsa.”

“Kal has found a place for Gypsy music in the

21st century.”— SF WEEKLY

Advance praise for Radio Romanista

“The musical equivalent of nuclear fusion, the Serbian band seems to create ever more ener-

getic tunes, upping the ante from their self-titled 2005 debut... Traditional touches pervade

the album, co-mingling with urban beats and outstanding instrumental prowess... Sure it’s

early in the year, but go ahead and mark Radio Romanista as one of the best albums of 2009.”

File in: World / North America / MexicoSan Miguel Tzinacapan is a Nahuat village situated in a lush, mountainous region in the North of the State of Puebla, some seven hours from Mexico City by coach, and half an hour’s walk from the tourist town of Cuetzalan, where most of the business activities of this region are concentrated. The language spoken in this village is related to Nahuatl, a language more commonly known abroad under the exotic name “Aztec.” In Nahuatl, Tzinacapan means “Bat Springs.” As in all the villages in the Sierra Norte of Puebla, life in San Miguel Tzinacapan follows the agricultural rhythms of maize and coffee and the ebb and fl ow of the fog banks that relentlessly blot out and recreate its landscape.

File in: World / Asia / TibetSoname’s fascinating autobiography Child in Tibet (Piatkus Books, 2007), has sold over 100,000 copies world wide. This book tells the remarkable story of her triumph over adversity, told against the backdrop of a turbulent and dangerous Tibet. Soname was born in the harsh Tibetan countryside during the Chinese occupation. When she was just sixteen, Soname risked death in a freedom trek across the Himalayas, fi nally arriving in Dharamsala, home in exile of the Dalai Lama. Soname later managed to reach England, where she met and married an Englishman. Her hidden talent was discovered when she sang a traditional Tibetan song at a wedding reception, unaware that a member of a famous band was a guest. Today, Soname has rapidly progressing career and an international touring schedule. Plateau, was recorded in London and Kolkata and features UK and Indian musicians including tabla maestro Tanmoy Bose. The producer is Dave M. Allen who has worked with The Cure and Depeche Mode. Soname composed all the material and sings in Tibetan throughout, her vocals evocative of the mountains and culture she has left so far behind. Tibet’s struggles remain a powerful issue throughout much of the world yet Tibetan culture remains distant and mysterious to most. The emergence of such a forceful, talented and appealing singer as Soname is set to change that.

WORLD

File in: World / Europe / SpainOrquestra Àrab de Barcelona is a band fi rmly rooted in Catalonia, a region of Spain that has a very large Arabic population. Although their music is based on traditional Arab sources, specifi cally from Moroccan and Andalucian cultures and the Sufi traditions, it is also infl uenced by world music, jazz and other types of Mediterranean music. But it is the Catalan connection that is the strongest. Leader Mohamed Soulimane, originally from Chefchaouen, Morocco, often speaks to local audiences in fl uent Catalan. Furthermore, two of his band mates. Jordi Gaig and Joan Rectoret, are native Catalans. The band exemplifi es the fact that Barcelona has absorbed Arabic culture to such extent that it now just another facet of Spain’s cultural kaleidoscope. The band’s new album, Maktub (Destiny), features Paco Ibáñez, Omar Sosa and Sergio Ramos (former drummer with Ojos de Brujo).
