On their new album Baltic Runes, Paul Hillier leads the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir in a program tracing the Balto-Finnic folksong tradition through the works of Jean Sibelius, Cyrillus Kreek, Erik Bergman and Veljo Tormis. Hillier’s previous forays into this repertoire (the Baltic Voices series) have been met with the highest critical acclaim. Hillier was also recently awarded a GRAMMY® for his recording of David Lang’s Little Match Girl Passion.

Congratulations to Mark Padmore and Roger Vignoles, who have won the 2009 Prix Caecilia for their recording of Britten songs, Before Life & After. The Prix Caecilia is an award from the Union de la Presse Musicale in Belgium given to honor the best recording of the year. It is one of the highest awards in the classical music industry.

Our April release of the month is harmonia mundi’s Gershwin By Grofé (p.5) featuring the Harmonie Ensemble New York led by Steven Richman. This fascinating album offers the listener a chance to hear carefully restored original versions of some of the composer’s favorites. Also on harmonia mundi, Maurice Steger and The English Concert are heard on Mr. Corelli in London (p.7) - a dazzling disc of concertos and other works based on works by the Italian master and Andreas Scholl is back with Songs of Myself (p.8), a tribute to the fi fteenth-century German composer Oswald von Wolkenstein. Hyperion has two big hits for April, both featuring pianist Stephen Hough. Hough celebrates the Chopin Year with Late Masterpieces (p.11) and is soloist on the milestone 50th recording in Hyperion’s Romantic Piano Concerto series, featuring the complete Tchaikovsky concertos (p.11). The Mariinsky label presents its fourth release, Shchedrin’s The Enchanted Wanderer (p.17) while Orange Mountain Music offers Philip Glass’s Itaipu (p.19) with the Los Angeles Master Chorale and Grant Gershon. In non-classical releases, World Village offers four key titles. The label’s star fadista Ana Moura presents Leva-me aos Fados (p.24), while jazz singer Catherine Russell delights with her latest blues-tinged album, Inside This Heart of Mine (p.35). World Village scores a major coup with the release of a thrilling live album featuring Lila Downs (p.25) and welcomes Counting Crows alum Matt Malley, who collaborates with Indian master V.M. Bhatt on Sleepless Nights (p.26). Rounding out the month are the debut of the East Meets West label, which will focus on historic recordings of Ravi Shankar (p.27) and Cesaria Evora’s powerful album Radio Mindelo (p.29) on Lusafrica.

Dear friends of harmonia mundi,

We regret to inform you that Bernard Coutaz, Chairman of harmonia mundi, has died in Arles, France on the afternoon of Friday, February 26. Coutaz, who founded harmonia mundi in 1958, was eighty-seven.

For over fi ve decades, Bernard Coutaz’s life was intimately linked with that of his company. Beginning as a classical music label, harmonia mundi soon took on its own commercial distribution, along with that of other, like-minded independent record labels. It subsequently diversifi ed into both book publishing and the distribution of other independent book publishers, a sector that now represents 40% of the company’s turnover in France. In the same spirit of independence, Coutaz established the harmonia mundi boutique retail chain. These specialty shops have been growing and thriving for over 20 years and today comprise forty-six shops throughout France and Spain. The company Mr. Coutaz founded half a century ago now employs over 300 people around the world and has subsidiary offi ces in Austria, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the USA.

Mr. Coutaz provided for his succession by appointing Eva Coutaz the Managing Director of harmonia mundi. Ms. Coutaz, who has been harmonia mundi’s Head of Production since the 1970s, will now lead the company. Together with Ms. Coutaz, the entire harmonia mundi staff will strive to continue its founder’s important legacy.

April 2010

“Mr. Coutaz remained faithful to his first loves, notably early and Baroque music. He was a daring spirit, staunchly dedicated to preserving the future of records throughout the entire world.”

— Frédéric Mitterrand, French Minister of Culture and Communication

Rembrandt’s engraving The Three Crosses inspired Frank Mar t in’s power fu l s ac red oratorio Golgotha. As Martin explained while he was still working on the score, “Once I had seen these etchings, I was positively haunted by the idea

of realizing an image of the Passion with my own resources.” Inevitably, Martin’s work was infl uenced by the passions of J.S. Bach, which he had been familiar with since childhood. Golgotha is comprised of ten musical tableaux that relate the story of Christ’s Passion. Martin draws on all four Gospels, interspersed with excerpts from the Meditations and Confessions of Augustine of Hippo and individual verses from the Psalms and liturgy for Holy Saturday. The fi nal part of the work is an epilogue, anticipating the events of Easter Day, replacing mourning with hope. Here Martin seems to have captured that ‘strange white light’ of transfi guration that he so admired in Rembrandt’s etching — the paradox of a luminous darkness. Daniel Reuss leads the Cappella Amsterdam and a cast of fi ne soloists in the fi rst new recording of this important work in sixteen years.

In this swinging set of symphonic jazz, Steven Richman and the GRAMMY® nominated Harmonie Ensemble New York perform a fascinating selection of music by George Gershwin. In addition to a reconstruction of Gershwin’s own 1934 orchestration of the I Got Rhythm Variations, Richman offers several orchestrations penned by composer and arranger Ferde Grofé in the 1920’s for the Paul Whiteman Orchestra. The disc’s main event is a red-hot performance of the original jazz band version of the immortal Rhapsody in Blue with pianist Lincoln Mayorga. The famous clarinet solo is played by the late, great Al Gallodoro, who was in his late nineties when the recording was made. Gallodoro played clarinet in the Whiteman Orchestra and can claim the distinction of having the world’s record for the most performances of the work’s iconic slide (over 10,000 times). Also included are a selection of Gershwin’s Broadway tunes including Summertime in a beautiful reading by Gallodoro and Mayorga, but the album’s special gem is a reading of The Yankee Doodle Blues, recorded by the Harmonie Ensemble New York on a wax cylinder (!) using a 1909 Edison Fireside phonograph.

A supreme monument of the lied repertoire, Schubert’s song cycle Die Winterreise, composed in 1827, is the embodiment of Romanticism in music. It is the ultimate expression of ‘sehnsucht’ — an existential longing that haunts the creations of this artistic movement in all its forms. This ‘winter journey’ presented by Werner Güra and Christoph Berner is also a journey back in time, with Berner playing a period-style Rönisch fortepiano.

Any e ighteenth-century Engl i sh gentleman wishing to signal his impeccable taste in music would often do so by referring to the works of Arcangelo Corelli, whose oeuvre was considered to be beyond reproach in matters of style and construction. The period saw an explosion of amateur musical societies all over the country. Gentlemen attending these societies could try their hand at ‘fi ddling’ and ‘piping,’ and their meetings were usually enlivened by food, alcohol and tobacco. Between 1725 and 1750, over fi fty clubs subscribed to Corelli reprints and publications. Corelli was literally written into their founding constitutions. English composers and musicians took advantage of this opportunity, creating arrangements, divisions and other re-workings of Corelli’s compositions, often featuring spectacular, fully notated ornaments. Recorder virtuoso Maurice Steger, together with The English Concert led by Laurence Cummings, performs a dazzling selection of concertos and other works fashioned from Corelli’s visionary Opus 5 Violin Sonatas, penned by Francesco Geminiani and other admirers.

Star lutenist Paul O’Dette turns his focus on Marco dall’Aquila (c1480-1544), a composer of remarkable individuality and creativity. In the lute’s transition from late-medieval style into fully formed Renaissance idiom,

dall’Aquila was a pivotal fi gure, and his trademark style brisé infl uenced the development of instrumental music for the next 200 years. dall’Aquila was based in Venice, where he was given a license to print lute tablature. He is acknowledged in the preface to Francesco da Milano’s work published in 1536 as an important predecessor. Relatively little survives of dall’Aquila’s lute music and nothing of what he may have printed himself in the early days of music printing at the beginning of the 16th century. Though perhaps best known for his recitals and recordings of virtuoso solo lute music, Paul O’Dette maintains an active international career as a continuo player, performing with today’s most respected conductors and ensembles. He is also the Artistic Director of the Boston Early Music Festival and conducts baroque operas and orchestral programs throughout the United States and Europe.

Few composers can have boasted quite such a colorful existence as the medieval poet and sometime diplomat Oswald von Wolkenstein (c.1376-1445). Having grown up in a Tyrolean castle, in a world recently ripped apart by the Black Death and immersed in religious and territorial conflict, Wolkenstein became something of a wandering knight with a complicated private life. If his travels greatly embellished the subject matter of his works, they also enriched the musical form, as he incorporated French songs forms into the German style. A singer of warm humanity, Andreas Scholl’s strikingly communicative voice has greatly endeared him to critics and public alike. This program, the result of new research into Wolkenstein, features previously unrecorded songs and instrumental arrangements and Scholl singing in both his counter-tenor and baritone voice ranges.

The cello was Frederic Chopin’s other favorite instrument. He loved for its closeness to the human voice. Chopin took an interest in opera from an early age, becoming what today we would call an ‘opera buff.’ He was familiar with the voices of all the singers of his time, fl irted with the German soprano Henriette Sontag and fell in love with singer Constantia Gladkowska, from whom he penned several superb pieces. When Chopin composed for cello, he heard the voice in its music. Ophelie Gaillard has thus chosen to pay tribute to the poet of the piano through the voice of the cello.

Poulenc composed L’histoire de Babar in 1940. As the story goes, Poulenc was improvising at the piano when his three-year-old cousin Sophie asked him to ‘play’ her book. It was the story of the inimitable little elephant Babar, written and illustrated by Jean de Brunhoff in 1930. Originally for piano and narrator, the work was orchestrated by Jean Françaix and is played here in an arrangement by David Walter. The pairing is Le Vent Tourbillon, (The Whirlwind) Claude Bolling’s musical story describing the history of wind instruments. Both works are delightful and will please music fans of all ages.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThe latest release in Channel’s ‘First Chairs of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra’ series features Jasper de Waal, who has held the position of fi rst horn with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra since 2004. This fascinating series allows musicians to present their personal calling cards, as it were, with their very own choice of music from their particular instrument’s repertoire. This disc features works for horn in various combinations written by the brothers Franz Josef and Michael Haydn.

Guillaume de Machaut was the most accomplished and versatile composer of the 14th century. The period’s intense melting pot of cultures gave birth to a wealth of new musical and poetic forms. One of the last of the trouvères, Machaut is credited with codifying a form called the lay, a long narrative poem depicting the joys and torments of courtly love. Marc Mauillon’s important new recording for Eloquentia features the premiere complete recording of Machaut’s fi rst lay, Loyauté que point ne delay. Comprising nearly 36 minutes, this is one of the most important and infl uential works of the period.

The second disc of Stravinsky’s ballet music from the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Ilan Volkov features the composer’s fascinating recreation of the music of Tcha ikovsky and Adam. Stravinsky’s advocation of the-then unfashionable music of

Tchaikovsky was well known: he was a public champion of the composer over the Russian ‘nationalists’ such as Rimsky-Korsakov. In 1928, Stravinsky was commissioned by Ida Rubinstein to compose a ballet based on music by Tchaikovsky. Stravinsky probably envisaged a set of free orchestrations, but the music seems to have taken over and dictated its own terms, with the result that Stravinsky soon found himself entangled in an intricate recreative process, and having to compose day and night to get the work completed in time for the fi rst performance. The result, The Fairy’s Kiss, is a complex and highly original masterpiece that brilliantly challenges our perhaps too comfortable way of listening to late romantic music. Scènes de ballet is in its way another ‘recreation’ — a ballet ‘after Giselle’ written for performance on Broadway in 1944. Stravinsky devised a semi-abstract scenario with vague allusions to Giselle among other nineteenth-century ballets. He then proceeded to compose, as it were, ‘away from’ such models, to the extent that his music constantly suggests their ethos and formulae but always through a neo-classical prism and without direct quotation.

Described as a jewel in the label’s crown and one of the glories of the recording industry, Hyperion’s Romantic Piano Concerto series has reached an amazing milestone: Volume 50. Rarely in the history of recorded music has such a rich seam of undiscovered delights been mined to such consistently dazzling effect. These fi rst fi fty volumes include 131 works for piano and orchestra. Fifty-nine of these are premiere recordings and many others have only been recorded once before. The performers include some of the greatest pianists, orchestras and conductors in the world, and each disc in itself is a miracle of virtuosity, scholarship and musicianship. For volume 50, a typically stellar cast has been assembled for a two-disc set that includes, unusually, one of the most famous concertos in the repertoire. Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1 has certainly achieved warhorse status — but in the expert hands of Stephen Hough, it sounds new once again. Recorded live with the Minnesota Orchestra under their acclaimed conductor Osmo Vänskä, this fascinating two-disc, complete survey of Tchaikovsky’s music for piano and orchestra also delves into less well-known music by the famous composer. The result is a release of unique importance: a winning combination of a pianist at the zenith of his artistry, a world-class orchestra and director, a pre-eminent producer and engineer, repertoire both familiar and unknown and packaged with even more than the usual care that customers have come to expect from Hyperion.

Hagai Shaham and Arnon Erez have been enthusiastically acclaimed for their dazzling duo performances. For their latest disc, they turn to two composers who were seminal figures of Eastern European music during the early twentieth century. Dohnányi composed a number of signifi cant pieces for the violin, including two violin concertos. One of his most important chamber works is the Violin Sonata, Op.21, composed in 1912. The work shows his individual development of stylistic traits

of Brahms and Liszt. Also recorded here is Dohnányi’s most overtly folk-infl uenced work, Ruralia hungarica, and a movement from his fi rst Orchestral Suite arranged as a thoroughly idiomatic piece for violin and piano by Jascha Heifetz. In the fi rst days of World War I, Dohnányi’s native Hungary was invaded by the Russian army. This portentous event provided the creative spark for Leos Janácek’s Violin Sonata (his only surviving violin sonata; two very early ones he composed in Dresden and Vienna in 1880 are lost). Other works by Janácek in this recital include early pieces from his student years and an arrangement of the delicate mood study “A blown-away Leaf” from his celebrated piano work, On the Overgrown Path.

Stephen Hough joins the celebrations for Chopin’s 200th birthday with a disc containing much of the composer’s most extraordinary music, written in the last years of his life where the expressive possibilities of his art were constantly unfolding and he imbued his favored forms with previously unknown levels of complexity and emotional depth. This disc includes the intoxicatingly ornamented Berceuse Op 57 and the sublime Barcarolle in F sharp major as well as the Polonaise-Fantasy in A fl at major and the towering Piano Sonata No 3 in B minor. Also included are two late Nocturnes that demonstrate how Chopin’s art had evolved since he fi rst composed in that genre in his youth. The program is completed by a selection of Mazurkas, each a tiny jewel, containing no less mastery than their larger counterparts, and providing moving sonic evidence of the contemplative profundity of Chopin’s late style. Stephen Hough’s extraordinarily sensitive playing is informed by his limitless technique and engaging musical imagination.

“To play Chopin with the rhythmic subtlety he requires without it seeming contrived is a rare gift. Stephen Hough has it in abundance.”

The Choir of Westminster Abbey under their inspirational director James O’Donnell delve into the Abbey’s vaults for this latest fascinating disc. The triumphant mood of the Restoration required much glorious liturgical music, and the Abbey was home to some of the greatest composers and performers of the age. This recording presents music written for-the Choir of Westminster Abbey during the late 1670s and early 1680s. They sing four canticles from the compendious Service in B fl at by Henry Purcell, together with psalmody in reconstructed contemporary style, and anthems and motets by Purcell and his contemporary John Blow, who famously both preceded and succeeded Purcell as organist of the Abbey.

Although well known and highly regarded in his lifetime and in the years following his death in 1596, the music of Philippe Rogier is largely unknown today. One of a long line of Flemish composers who worked at the Spanish court, Rogier is one of the most fascinating and rewarding composers of the late sixteenth century. The main work on this disc is parody mass Missa Ego sum qui sum, based on a motet by Gombert. It must rank as one of the fi nest settings of the Mass ordinary of the late sixteenth century, dazzling in its invention and sheer beauty. Two twelve-part accompanied motets are also recorded here, pointing to a well-developed polychoral tradition at the Spanish court. The much admired Choir of King’s College London and their director David Trendell appear in their Hyperion debut.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDFollowing works by Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky, for its fourth release Valery Gergiev’s Mariinsky label turns to music by one of Russia’s greatest living composers. Shchedrin’s concert opera The Enchanted Wanderer was premiered in New York in 2002, but did not receive its Russian premiere until 2007. However it has rapidly entered the Mariinsky Theatre’s repertory both in St. Petersburg and on tour. Based on a story by the 19th-century Russian author Nikolai Leskov, the opera is steeped in Russian folklore and beliefs. The release also features four fragments from Shchedrin’s 1955 ballet score The Little Humpbacked Horse and his 1963 concerto for orchestra entitled Naughty Limericks.

This disc, a collection of live recordings taken from performances at the Royal Festival Hall and the Festival de la Grange de Meslay, provides yet another example of Boris Berezovsky’s stunning virtuosity and musicality. A Liszt recital, the disc features his famous Sonata in B Minor, often considered Liszt’s greatest composition for solo piano. Other works include Harmonies du soir, Venezia e Napoli and the Mephisto Waltz No. 1. Berezovsky closes the disc with one encore, the Chopin Waltz, Op.42.

Charles-Valentin Alkan’s neglected Sonate de concert is the most ambitious work for cello & piano of the Romantic period. Alkan wrote this monumental, virtuosic piece for the great cellist Auguste-Joseph Franchomme. It was for the same musician that Chopin, shortly before his death, composed his Sonata for cello and piano, a crepuscular, tormented work. Cellist Tatjana Vassiljeva and pianist Jean-Frédéric Neuburger provide their own unique perspective on these seminal works.

Itaipu is a large-scale work for orchestra and chorus composed by Philip Glass for the Atlanta Symphony and was premiered there under the baton of Robert Shaw in 1989. Orange Mountain Music presents this re-mastered recording of the work (originally released on RCM) featuring the renowned Los Angeles Master Chorale under the direction of Grant Gershon. Itaipu, a symphonic portrait for chorus and orchestra, was inspired by the giant hydro-electric dam in Brazil and is part of a series of the composer’s works involving depictions of man’s relationship to nature. The libretto is taken from the creation myth of the Guarani, and is sung in the Guarani language. The album is rounded out by the Crouch End Festival Chorus performing Philip Glass’ Three Songs for Choir a Cappella (originally issued on Silva Screen) set to texts by Leonard Cohen, Raymond Levesque and Octavio Paz.

Giulini live in Berlin

Testament presents three further offerings in their series of reissues featuring the great conductor Carlo Maria Giulini. As before, the recordings are live performances of complete concerts with the Berlin Philharmonic, made in the sixties and seventies, at the height of Giulini’s powers. Repertoire ranges in periods from Renaissance (!) to modern, and features some of the fi nest soloists of the day. The Rossini Stabat Mater is of particular interest, and is offered at a special “2 for 1” price. A reviewer for Die Welt said of Giulini’s performance, “Giulini’s interpretation was reverent and dignifi ed without, however, making the charm of the work descend to the religious profundities that are only served up in the North.”

First premiered in 1882, Wagner’s last music-drama, Parsifal, was performed at Covent Garden for the fi rst time in 1951. The opera still had a reputation, separate from Wagner’s other works, of being pretentious, religiose and above all, slow. Then in 1952 Decca published the fi rst complete recording made at performances given the year before at the reopening of the Bayreuth Festival under Hans Knappertsbusch. That recording made an immense impression, partly because the sound was so staggering, and partly because Parsifal revealed itself to its many skeptics as a work of overwhelming beauty, depth and humanity. This Covent Garden recording featuring Rudolf Kempe follows on Testament’s notable release of the conductor’s Ring from 1957. Made two years later and featuring a solid cast of soloists, this probing reading will be a must-have for Wagner enthusiasts.

File In: World / Europe / Portugal / Fado

On her fourth album, Leva-me aos fados (Take Me to a Fado House), youthful Portuguese fadista Ana Moura reaches new heights of vocal mastery while, as is typical of this gracefully mournful, all-acoustic tradition, plunging to the depths of romantic disillusionment and unfulfi l led sexual longing. Interpreting songs by longtime collaborator Jorge Fernando, who produced and sat in on guitar, plus other noted composers, Moura’s rich, exquisitely bittersweet alto is breathtaking in its womanly, aching vulnerability. She negotiates sinuous, Moorish-infl ected wails and breathes poignancy into every melody, wringing every possible tear-drop from lyrics where even the occasional faint silver lining can cut to the bone. Whether facing down a triumphant rival (“Caso Arrumado” – A Settled Affair), dodging doom-infl ected omens (“Como uma nuvem no céu” – Like A Cloud In The Sky), or weeping in solitude at day’s end (“A Penumbra” – Dusk), Moura communicates world-weary, indomitable courage spiced with a risqué tang of dark passion that “hurts so good.”

“Her supple, dusky alto is an enviable meeting of sensuality and dulcet clarity, while her grasp of this time-honored genre belies her relative youth.”

File In: World / MexicoFor over a decade, acclaimed Mexican-American singer Lila Downs has traveled the world, performing her dramatic and highly unique reinvention of traditional music alongside original compositions fused with blues, jazz, soul and African roots. Lila Downs y La Misteriosa en Paris — Live à FIP is her fi rst live recording, recorded in May, 2009 at Radio France Studio 105. Downs is well-known for

her texturally rich and diverse recordings, as well as highly dynamic live performances. The album seamlessly delivers the best of both worlds, brilliantly capturing the exuberant energy of Downs’ and her band’s performances, weaving in traditional instruments such as accordion, harp, clarinet and trombone with driving bass and drums, electric guitar and infectious Latin percussion. The fi fteen tracks on this powerful new World Village CD span six albums, from 1999’s La Sandunga to 2008’s Shake Away. From the carnival like atmosphere of “Perro Negro” or the rootsy blues of “Minimum Wage,” to traditional Mexican songs that audiences have come to love such as “Paloma Negra,” few artists can successfully navigate the terrain of such seemingly disparate music. But Downs always seems to get to the core of it, making it her own and bringing the audience along for an emotional and memorable ride.

“Whatever Lila Downs touches turns to art.”— LA WEEKLY

“There is no doubt that she has earned her supreme confidence and reinvigorated the place in Mexican music where popular and traditional sounds collide. Downs is getting

File In: World / Asia / IndiaIndian classical music legend Vishwa Mohan Bhatt has mesmerized the world with his dazzling musicality, virtuosity and astonishing command of the Mohan Veena (an instrument he designed — a modified and Easternized slide guitar). Bhatt is

best known in the US for his GRAMMY® award winning album A Meeting by the River, which he made with guitar great Ry Cooder. Guitarist Matt Malley is an Oscar®, GRAMMY® and Golden Globe® nominated songwriter who co-founded the multi-platinum rock group Counting Crows. When chance brings them together, either Malley is taking lessons from his “music guru” at Bhatt’s home in Jaipur, India, or he is recording with Bhatt in his home studio in Thousand Oaks, California. Speaking about Sleepless Nights, their new album for World Village, Bhatt says, “In my view, music is the melody for life. The seven musical notes carry all the diverse shades of love and this musical album is an endeavor to spread the message of love and harmony all over the world. In the contemporary world, love is the only emotion which needs to be experienced and appreciated, and Sleepless Nights, propagates this sacred emotion.” Malley adds, “I hope that our record will put at least one more brick in the bridge between the East, West and all races of the world.”

File In: World / Asia / IndiaEast Meets West Music’s inaugural release, Nine Decades — Vol.1, is the fi rst in a multi-volume series that will feature rare and never-before released recordings, hand-picked by the legendary Ravi Shankar from his vast archive. With live performances and studio recordings pivotal to his development as an artist and refl ective of unique times and places, the Nine Decades series will provide fresh insights on a career spanning 70-plus years and offer a direct bridge between the artist himself and his listeners. “Raga Gangeshwari,” the centerpiece of volume one, takes listeners to an outdoor concert at a temple on the banks of the Ganges in 1968. Though recorded with one hand-held microphone, “Raga Gangeshwari” is representative of the archive’s many treasures which the artist describes as, “not recorded with sophisticated audio equipment and yet they exhibit the power of life in live performance that has a value beyond any technological shortcomings.” The intimate quality of the recording and virtuosic playing allows listeners to experience a page from the artist’s diary circa 1968. Performed with Kamala Chakravarty on tanpura and the great Ustad Allah Rakha on tabla. East Meets West Music is the offi cial recording label of the Ravi Shankar Foundation.

File In: JazzRevered jazz vocalist Catherine Russell’s third album for World Village, Inside This Heart of Mine , showcases the ever-deepening interpretive wiles of her ripe, honey-dipped alto, as she personifies the living heart and proud history of each of the thirteen songs that make up this set. Opening with the title tune, a Fats Waller torcher that paces like a disappointed lover pulling an all-nighter, she then launches into “All The Cats Join In,” a sepia-tone snapshot from the heyday of 1940s swing. On “Troubled Waters,” she is a misunderstood but undeniably shady lady, her musky musings shadowed by a scorching muted trumpet and speaking solo piano that abet — and perhaps contradict — her hopes of redemption. “November,” a lyrical, poetic vignette, likens the dark turn of the year to loneliness and heartbreak, while a plangent banjo and rueful fiddle mark “Just Because You Can,” in which a man is warned to straighten up or deal with the consequences. Whether demanding stamina from lover (“Long, Strong and Consecutive”), playfully bemoaning the evils of the demon alcohol (“Quiet Whiskey”), or celebrating New Orleans-style swagger (“Struttin’ With Some Barbeque”), Russell is never less than achingly feminine, impassioned, genuine, vulnerable — and utterly indomitable.

“A masterful singer who knows how to inject her own personality into the heart of a great song.”

File In: JazzLegendary underground cartoonist Robert Crumb and guitarist Dominique Cravic founded Les Primitifs du Futur in 1986 craving real Parisian musette instead of poor imitations heard in variety shows. Sounding like they’ve stepped right out the ‘30s, the members of Les Primitifs du Futur brilliantly blend world-musette and Django-style guitar into old-fashioned originals. With their three albums, including Trop de Routes, Trop de Trains, the band remains at the forefront of the renaissance of “chanson française” manifestly occurring in France today. The band is currently on tour in the US.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDFile In: JazzLou Donaldson’s undisputed masterpiece, Blues Walk, marks the point where the altoist began to decisively modify his heavy Charlie Parker infl uence and add a smoky, bluesy fl avor of his own. The material is still fi rmly in the bebop style, and the mellower moments aren’t as sleepy as some of Donaldson’s subsequent work, so the album sounds vital and distinctive even as it slows down and loosens things up. APO’s new SACD version of this classic adds a new dimension of sonic depth.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDFile in: SoundtrackThe music on the sound track to The Hot Spot is an amalgam of swampy blues, jazz and rock. This recording is of incredibly high quality, and the musicians aboard on this Dennis Hopper fi lm read like a who’s who, including Miles Davis, John Lee Hooker, Taj Mahal, Roy Rodgers, Earl Palmer and Tim Drummond. This album has long been a highly sought after and collectible record among audiophiles. Originally released in 1990, this SACD is a true demonstration disc.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo / DSDFile in: RockWhen Peter Frampton left Humble Pie, the band he co-founded, the group replaced him with fi reball guitarist Clem Clemson. And Humble Pie grew a whole lot more raucous, more freewheeling and downright greasy. Their third album, the fi rst with Clemson, is unquestionably their greatest, with Steve Marriott’s soulful wail totally unleashed. Smokin’ yielded the group’s most memorable anthem — “30 Days In The Hole.”
